This is the ideal place to enjoy a beautiful day outside. However, it could probably use an upgrade. Here are some of the best ways to improve an outdoor patio. 6 Island Property News • June 2020 - Outdoor Living • www.ipn.bm

Live Outdoors 5 Amazing Ways to Transform Your Outdoor Patio! Expert Advice from Martin Estis of A&M Construction

1. Install a Pergola

An open-air patio is great, but imagine having one that is covered. The entire ambiance changes. It can become a cozy and inviting space, especially in the evening with some soft lighting surrounding it. A pergola over your patio also provides it with welcoming shade when the sun is shining down strongly. They also give a touch of elegance to your outdoor patio.

2. Install an Outdoor Kitchen

An outdoor kitchen will make you want to stay outside all day. Forget about needing to run into the house every time you want to fix yourself a drink or do some quick food prep for a bite to eat. An outdoor patio is a great location to install an outdoor kitchen. This can be anything from a simple bar and pre-stations to a full-blown gourmet kitchen.

3. Get Patio Furniture

What’s an outdoor patio without a place to lounge and relax? Bring out some exterior decor like patio furniture, to maximize your time outside. Special patio couches and armchair seats are great options to bring onto your outdoor patio. These are all-weather pieces of furniture that are usually made out of either wicker or plastic. You can also get a little more experimental and install a hammock that comes with its own stand.

4. Install a Fireplace

Bring some extra ambiance to your outdoor patio by installing a charming fireplace. When you have great-looking patio furniture, you can place it around a fireplace that is either embedded into a wall or fixed in the center of a patio, for all to sit around. If you live somewhere that does not allow natural wood fires, you can opt for getting a natural gas fire fit installed where you can enjoy a cozy atmosphere with the simple flip of a switch.

5. Upgrade to Patio Pavers

The run-of-the-mill concrete patio can look a little drab. Upgrade from poured concrete to concrete pavers. These can come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. They will be easier to repair and less expensive if they ever need to be repaired. You simply replace the stained or cracked pavers, or just turn them over. At A&M we believe your living space should be a reflection of who you’ve worked so hard to become. All it takes are a few upgrades. Overall, an outdoor patio is a great home feature that provides a comfortable gathering place, as well as shelter from outdoor elements. With an outdoor patio, it’s easier to spend more time outside year-round.

Summer Entertaining

The best thing about dining outdoors in the summer is that it can be as simple as a few burgers off the grill with a large jug of swizzle or as fancy as a filet mignon served on your best china. Either way, you will find yourself dining al fresco at some point. If you are anything like us here at IPN then I am sure you are looking forward to spending time outdoors with your favorite people - and food is always the common ground. Here are a few tips to help you enhance your no-rules summer dinner party no matter how formal or casual it may be!

The Menu

It only makes sense to start here right! Think fresh, think local, think creative. You know that beautiful garden you started through quarantine? Start there. Think of the ways you can incorporate your homegrown herbs, fruits and vegetables into your signature dish. Or head to your local farmers market and indulge in the goodies the vendors have to offer. Try getting your hands on my favorite seasonal commodity - Bermuda corn. It is absolutely delicious and one of the most multi-talented vegetables known to man.

The Setting

Tablescapes and simple accessories make a big difference. Everyone likes comfort and a wow factor no matter how simple your outdoor dinner endeavors may be. Put a little effort into making your table look great. Placemats can add texture and style to the look of your table. If you’re catering to a more intimate group, try using cloth napkins or decorative dishcloths as opposed to paper napkins - I’m sure the tree giving you shade would be thankful. Keep the pests at bay by using natural citronella candles or head back to your garden to pick a bunch of rosemary and mint to add it to your table centerpiece. Add pops of color to your tablescape by placing a mixture of whole and halved citrus fruits. Not to mention, the combination of herbs and fruits will smell great!

Dinnerware & Glassware

There’s a new kind of “plastic” in town. Melamine and bamboo dishes are perfect for dining outdoors. Not only are they durable and reusable they are trendy too! One of my favorite shops on Par-la-Ville street carry an array of melamine and bamboo dinnerware at a great value. Acrylic cups are also on our musthave list when dining outdoors. They enhance any backyard BBQ and you won’t have to worry about broken glass - insert picture of toddler here - and way more environmentally friendly than disposable cups! You can find a bunch of styles and colors to match your desired theme too! I think we have covered all the basics to get you started. If you’re new to this and it all still seems a little overwhelming, you can always reach out to your local dinner party enthusiasts to help you get you started!

Your Pandemic DIY!

Gardening at Home PROJECT: Potted Vegetable Garden Hannah Emmerson

GARDEN TYPE: The first thing I did when my job was laid off was to head to the nearest garden store and panic buy seeds to start a garden. I tried to only buy the seeds for plants that I couldn’t readily germinate from my weekly groceries. As long as you buy organic you can regrow things like tomato’s, squash, and even celery, spring onions, potatoes and garlic from your kitchen scraps. I even started a peanut plant from the raw peanuts I’ve been snacking on!

Getting Started

With that in mind I bought broccoli, carrots, cabbage, spinach and kale seeds to start my garden. Five weeks later I was getting my first beans and harvesting the best tasting spinach I’ve ever had. What was the hardest part? The hardest part of the journey has been finding soil. I bought some potting soil from the nursery and was even lucky enough to get a couple of buckets of free compost from Marshfolly. That needs a sifter to get the bigger bits out, but you can’t argue with free. To help this endeavor I decided to start my own compost. What was The Easiest Part? Honestly this was the most rewarding part of my lockdown. I have always wanted a garden but my life before was so busy that I would forget to water, repot or care for plants until it was too late and then I would over love and drown them. Only the hardiest of succulents survived me. With the extra time on my hands gardening has given me purpose to my day and a lot more confidence in my skills to keep things alive. While I’m not ready to feed a whole family from the garden yet it’s rewarding to think that with time I could! And I encourage anyone out there to try. You might be impressed with what you can grow too!

Marshfolly soil

HANNAH’s AMAZING DIY COMPOST!

The easiest way I found was to use a bucket with a secure lid. I cut the bottom out and drilled a few holes in the sides. Sprayed it brown so as to blend in better and buried it as far down as I could in the garden. All my coffee grinds, peanut shells, eggshells and veggie cuts all go into the bucket and here’s hoping I have some grade A soil.

Staying Healthy OUTDOORS Expert Advice from Keelin Hankin BSc RD, Registered Dietitians at Island Nutrition

Now that we have entered the beginning of summer, nothing beats going to the beach and getting that daily dose of Vitamin D. When you are ready to pack up and head to the shore make sure you pack a few of these beach snacks (along with your sunscreen of course!). Trail Mix – making your own trail mix with unsalted nuts, seeds and small amounts of dried fruit can provide you with a good

source of protein as well as essential healthy fats. ¼ cup measure of this mix should be enough. The best thing about trail mix is that it’s customizable so you can add what you have available in the cupboard. Fresh fruit– wedges of watermelon, slices of orange or frozen grapes kept close to your cooler can be a refreshing and light snack before you carry on swimming! Apple and peanut butter – Can’t decide between sweet and savory? Slices of apple along with 1tbsp peanut butter can be a great addition to your cooler. It is a great way to get a good source of protein, fibre and plenty of vitamins and minerals. A tip to prevent the apple slices from browning is by squeezing lemon juice over these just before you pack them away.

Raw veggies/ multigrain crackers and humus – Sliced veggies like cucumber, celery, carrots or peppers are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These can all be sliced and packed away beforehand. Combine with some humus, salsa, guacamole or a low-fat dressing/dip. Popcorn – popping your own plain kernels at home and packing these with your own choice of sodium free seasoning such as cinnamon or chili can be a low-calorie snack that can be filling as well as tasty. Beverages – it is important to make sure we are well hydrated when out in the hot sun. Adding citrus fruit, cucumber or mint to water helps to give it a refreshing twist. Try to keep sugary drinks or sodas to a minimum by choosing sugar free alternatives. If making iced tea try to stick to things like lemon and ginger to customize the taste rather than lots of added sugar or honey. Sandwiches/wraps – Choosing wholegrain/whole-wheat bread over white bread can keep us fuller for longer as well as providing us with plenty of fibre. Choose a lean protein such as egg, beans, sliced turkey or chicken along with some lettuce, tomato or cucumber. Wrap in tin foil or pack in Tupperware to keep safe from the sand! If you feel you would benefit from support from a Registered Dietitian please contact us at Island Nutrition on 295-4082 or at info@islandnutrition.bm.
