Siquijor priest echoes Pope’s message of compassion, mercy to local leaders

SIQUIJOR (PIA)—Siquijor Priest Rev. Fr. Leonilo Torres of the St Francis of Assisi Parish here echoed Pope Francis’ message of compassion and mercy to all local political leaders during the Holy Mass celebrated for the Provincial and Municipal Elected Officials’ Oath taking Ceremonies at the Siquijor Capital Square. I n h i s H o m i l y, To r r e s a p p e a l e d t o t h e l e a d e r s t o be compassionate and merciful to everybody and let their words and duties be influenced by the teachings of the church. Politics is the highest form of charity, the priest said. Political leaders, he said, can be effective and e ff i c i e n t i f t h e i r a c t i o n s , d e c i s i o n s , p l a n s a n d p r o g r a m s are driven and motivated by spiritual and moral values. He added that leaders can be effective and efficient if they have the capacity to be responsive regardless of political colors and affiliations. “We cannot divorce or separate God from our activities i n o u r p o l i t i c a l c a r e e r, ” h e s a i d , a p p e a l i n g t o t h e e l e c t e d leaders to “enter into the shoes” of their constituents.

Coral family of Lazi bags Provincial Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya 2016 SIQUIJOR (PIA) -- A Pantawid Pamilya family-beneficiary in the municipality of Lazi was chosen as Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya 2016 in the province. The Coral family will receive cash prize and certificate of recognition. The Coral couple, Patricio and Arlene, are both Persons with Disability (PWDs) who did not let their physical inadequacies stop them from becoming income-earners. Patricio works as utility in the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) after his six-month good performance in Trabahong Lansangan despite his arm deformities.
Arlene, who is unable to walk after being struck by polio when she was a baby, earns as a cosmetologist. They have only one child due to the high-risk pregnancy of Arlene. This annual search acknowledges families who maintain strong family ties and harmonious relationship and uphold Filipino values despite the challenges that poverty causes or brings, inspire other members of the community and strive to improve living condition amidst difficult situation. Other provincial winners are Suan Family of barangay Catulayan, San Juan (2nd place) and Olho Family of Brgy. Caitican, Siquijor (3rd place). Other family-entries are Anggay
Family of barangay Cang-allas, Larena; Dalaguete Family of Bolot, Enrique Villanueva; and Bantugan Family of Candaping B, Maria. Judges during the provincial search are Provincial Administrator Pedro Samson, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Lina Medel, Director of Community Extension Office of Siquijor State College Dr. Expedita Duran, and Senior Education Program Specialist (Social Mobilization and Networking) of Department of Education Edgen Bagundol. DOST Siquijor, CVISNET train brgy officials on BeST
SIQUIJOR, July 11 (PIA) -- Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Central Visayas Information Systems and Network (CVISNET) here held a training on Barangay e-Systems and Tools (BeST) recently to officials and staff of selected barangays in the municipality of Siquijor. Officials from the CVISNET led by Jeffrey Llanto and Engr. Abraham Talisayan were tapped as resource persons to conduct the training. Barangays Candanay Sur, Pangi, Canal, Poblacion, San Antonio, and Caticugan participated in the two-day event. Also present in the training/ seminar is the local disaster risk reduction management officer (LDRRMO) of the local government unit (LGU) of Lazi. During the training, participants were trained on the operation of the BeST, encoding of necessary data to required fields and how to generate reports such as the barangay clearance, barangay ID and business permit, among others. At the end of the training, the participants were able to gain insights and knowledge on the vast potential of using Barangay e-Systems and Tools in the efficient delivery of services to its constituents and as an effective tool in making reports based updated and reliable data. When asked on future plans and the possibility of employing BeST on the barangay level, the participants were eager to buy the program packaged with a server. BeST is a project initiated by CVISNET to provide the community with solutions for planning, monitoring and document generation for the barangay. This includes a computerized record keeping system that manages the residents’ information, judicial information and permit generation in the barangay. RA 10742 raises to 24 the age limit of SK candidates MANILA, (PIA) – The candidates for the Sangguniang Kabataan polls on October 31, 2016, must be between 18 to 24 years old, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) pointed out. I n h i s Tw i t t e r a c c o u n t @ jabjimenez, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez posted that the adjustment in the age bracket is provided for by Republic Act No. 10742 or the SK Reform Act of 2015. Section 10 on Qualifications, of the said law provides that an official of the Sangguniang Kabataan, either elective or appointee, must be , at least eighteen (18) years but not more than twenty-four (24) years of age on the day of the elections.
The same Section of the law provides that an official of the SK, either elective or appointee, must be a citizen of the Philippines, a qualified voter of the Katipunan ng Kabataan, a resident of the barangay for not less than one (1) year immediately preceding the day of the elections, must be able to read and write Filipino, English, or the local dialect, must not be related within the second civil degree of consanguinity or affinity to any incumbent elected national official or to any incumbent elected regional, provincial, city, municipal, or barangay official, in the locality where he or she seeks to be elected, and must not have been convicted by final judgment of any crime involving moral turpitude.
The law also provides that SK voters shall be aged 15 to 30 years old. In previous SK elections, candidates were aged at least 15 years old but less than 18 years old on election day and those aged 15-18 could sign up for the SK elections. In every barangay, a Sangguniang Kabataan will be composed of a chairperson and seven (7) members who shall be elected by the registered voters of the Katipunan ng Kabataan. The Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson shall, with concurrence of the majority of the Sangguniang Kabataan members, appoint from among the members of the Katipunan ng Kabataan, a secretary and a treasurer.
