A hobby, now a business
Since she was single, Josephine Chan was fond of baking. Her family and friends were the first satisfied customers of the cakes and pastries that she baked. In 2000, Josephine started Jainin’s Cakes and pastries, named after her two kids, Jai-jai and Niño. Her first product was tortilla, which she named after her mother, Lita. Macaroons, assorted bars, cakes and rolls followed. Josephine’s husband, Edgardo, is no stranger either to baking. As a boy, he helped in their bakery in Calamba, Laguna. He was later employed in Dunkin’s performing accounting tasks. Both skills came in handy in their own business. DOST was known to the members of the Siquijor Association of Food Entrepreneurs (SAFE) of which Josephine is a member. After identifying their needs, a proposal was submitted to DOST for SET-UP and in 2006, Jainin’s Cakes and Pastries became a recipient of a technology upgrade assistance. A 16-plate oven was added to Jainin’s 2-plate oven, increasing their production capacity, eight times. A planetary mixer replaced the manual mixing done which was not only tiresome but consumed a lot of time. A heavy-duty blender increased efficiency. The ordinary working table made of wood was replaced by two stainlesstopped tables. Unlike in the past where cakes could not be

attractively displayed, a 7-foot chiller made this possible. The even and fine texture of icing on cakes, which could not be consistently done manually, can now be achieved through the DOST- acquired cake decorating set. DOST also assisted Jainin’s with improved packaging of their products. All these increased productivity and sales. The market for bakery products is good but owners are faced with the problem of increasing prices of raw materials. Product innovations are underway using vegetable-based ingredients. A plan to supply eateries in Siquijor, to have a separate production and display area and the possible acquisition of additional equipment are being considered. This business, which started only as a hobby, is paying off. Jai-jai and Niño are also learning. Who knows, this will also become their hobby.

NGP plantations in region 7 registers 82% survival rate CEBU CITY, Feb. 26 (PIA)--The national greening program (NGP) plantations in the Central Visayas region registered nearly 82% survival rate, according to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-7) regional executive director Dr. Isabelo Montejo. Montejo added that the standing of the region in terms of survival rate of seedlings planted in 2011 and 2012 plantations is about 81.49 percent based
on the completed validation conducted by the Forest Management Services (FMS). The region’s higher survival rate is attributed to the strong support of the people’s organizations (POs) and local government units (LGUs), the proximity of the available seedlings to the planting site and the aggressive regular monitoring and maintenance programs, said the DENR-7 official.

Per the revised NGP validation results for years 2011 and 2012 plantations released by FMS, Cebu yielded the highest rate for surviving seedlings at 84.48%, equivalent to 1,918,631 in 2012 with 80.25% in 2011 or 1,216,542. Bohol Province with 82.19% and 79.83% or equivalent to 4,542,748 and 1,066,867 survived seedlings i n 2 0 11 a n d 2 0 1 2 , r e s p e c t i v e l y. Negros Oriental Province marked a similar rate of 79% or 2,246,617 in 2012 and 855,956 in 2011 while Siquijor Province obtained the highest rate with 91% or 109,091 seedlings survived in 2011 but the following year 2012, it went down to 80% or 162,986 seedlings survived. The FMS report also bared that it has validated around 5,768.58 hectares or 100.55% from the previously reported 5,736.76 hectares planted in 2011. The succeeding year, 2012, it validated about 11,144.45 hectares with the reported plantations of 11,015.26 hectares or 101.17%, as reported. Montejo said that DENR Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje has ordered for the notarization of all reports submitted by its field offices on the NGP with the instructions that all pictures should be geo-tagged to erase doubts on the veracity and integrity of the reports. The validation was led by FMS Regional Technical Director Eduardo Inting with Forest Resources Development Division (FRDD) chief Mario Aragon. The validations aimed to verify on the ground the actual surviving seedlings and the areas covered, added Montejo. “ Our intention is also to increase the agency’s competence in providing accurate and reliable reports, particularly the NGP as required by President Aquino and Secretary Paje including the Department of Budget and Management before our 2014 NGP budget shall have been released,” Montejo explained. NGP also seeks to improve water quality in rivers and irrigation for farm lands, reduce the potential for flooding, soak up carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and lay the foundation for an expanded wood-products economy. President Aquino issued Executive Order 26 on February 24, 2011 establishing the NGP not only to reforest 1.5 million hectares of land but also to promote a sustained environmental awareness campaign in the face of the deleterious effects of climate change.
