The way ahead. After such a turbulent year it would be a brave man that predicts where 2012 might take us. For those in the travel industry it might be best to expect the unexpected. Change will present challenges, but at the same time there will be opportunities for operators savvy enough to take advantage of them. In this issue we look at family holidays in Fiji. A great example of a tourist market that’s identified a demand and tailored an offer to meet it. We also explore the Coral Coast and cover one of their biggest events, the Coral Coast Rugby Sevens Tournament which featured Fijian icon Serevi. Otherwise we wish you a safe and relaxing Christmas and look forward to seeing and hearing from you in the New Year. Take care.

Niue

Bunce has a ball Former All Black great Frank Bunce has recently returned from a week long holiday in Niue where he enjoyed reconnecting with his Niuean roots and discovering what the island has to offer. It was Frank’s second visit to the island after his Niuean heritage led him to take a journey of discovery to Niue a few years ago. He has since become a tourism ambassador for the island. “This role allows me to become more involved with Niue. To give something back to a place that has been a huge influence on me,” says Frank. Niue residents were thrilled to have the famous Niuean visiting them and enjoying what the country has to offer. Frank, whose Mother is Niuean, enjoyed visiting the local school where he shared stories about his time as an All Black. He also returned to his mothers village, met with relatives and even attended one of the Island’s church services. With his new role as a tourism ambassador, Frank was also keen to experience some of the activities for which the island is famed including swimming with the dolphins, fishing and exploring the island’s sea tracks and coves. “What blew me away the most was there is just so much to do” says Frank. “It’s such a great destination whether you want action or relaxation, Niue can give it to you. It’s not your typical island holiday destination but in terms of lifetime experiences and memories to match it’s hard to beat.”

Big win for the yacht-less Yacht Club The ‘yacht-less’ Niue Yacht Club has been awarded the prestigious 2011 Cruising Station of the Year Award by the Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA). The Club beat over 100 international cruising stations to take out the prestigious award for their efforts in making Niue a safe and enjoyable stop for cruisers. The not-for-profit organisation, affectionately referred to as ‘The Biggest Little Yacht Club in the World’, is the only club in the world which has no yachts and nobody on the management committee who has ever sailed! But when it comes to hosting, the committee excels at providing the 200 plus yachts that visit Niue with a great time. They’ve even helped with a number of developments including the development of 20 new moorings in Alofi Bay, a new premise at Niue Backpackers where yacht crews can enjoy the use of free Wi-Fi and the establishment of a SailMail system.

Whales win big award This stunning underwater shot of a Humpback Whale and calf, has won recent tourist Mazdak Radjainia the 2011 NZ Geographic Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award. With nearly 3,000 entries received across four categories, this award is considered the highest accolade a photographer can receive.

New rooms will have a modern contemporary feel blended with Pacific Island colours and culture. The theme is ocean meets rainforest with each room having stunning private views. Rooms feature large covered decks, local traditional artwork and are all fully air conditioned. Guests will arrive to their retreats via a short stroll through the forest on a coral embossed pathway. The resorts own seatrack will guide guests down to the reef where they can explore the surrounding area.

A slice of Niue on display at Auckland Art Gallery From Saturday 17 December, Auckland Art Gallery will present renowned Niuean artist, writer and poet, John Pule’s Hauaga (Arrivals) exhibition. John grew up and lives in Auckland, so this exhibition brings his major works back to his hometown. Regional Facilities Auckland Art Gallery director Chris Saines describes John Pule: Hauaga (Arrivals) as a ‘timely recognition of one of New Zealand’s most influential and highly respected artists, someone whose work shifts seamlessly between traditional and contemporary cultural contexts and art forms’. Since the mid-1980s, John Pule has explored performance, poetry, literature and painting, all inspired by his Niuean culture and today he is a prominent cultural figure within New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. Aggie Greys Lagoon Beach Resort & Spa is fast gaining a reputation for co-ordinating spectacular weddings and special celebrations and was recently host to the wedding of All Black Jerome Kaino and his fiancé Diana Breslin. Events and Weddings Manager, Greg Meredith worked hard behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly on their big day. Unfortunately the weather didn’t behave as hoped, but there is always a Plan B and the couple had a spectacular ceremony under cover with a pink and white frangipani arch framing the pool, lagoon and lush tropical gardens as their backdrop. A sea of fragrant flowers were strewn across the floor as the bride and her bridesmaids made their entrance escorted by Samoan warriors chanting and the call of the conch. The beautiful 20 minute ceremony was conducted by Jerome’s uncle Pastor Illiafi Esera. This was then followed by pre- dinner drinks in the open courtyard where fresh oysters and Samoan delicacies were served before everyone moved to the South Pacific Restaurant for the reception. Guests then enjoyed a sumptuous buffet of Samoan and European dishes, from roast lamb to lobster, suckling pig and local favorite taro and palosami. This was followed by the traditional Samoan Fia Fia cultural show ending with a Samoan Siva which got everyone up on the dance floor. It was a wonderful day and a great success and is just one example of the sort of planning that Greg and his team will work hard on to ensure that everyones special occassion is everything they ever dreamed of.

New GSA for Blue Lagoon

Agents pick up cruise tips

Blue Lagoon Cruises have appointed Tanoa Hotel Group as its new GSA in New Zealand. “We are currently undergoing a restructure to cater for the demands of boutique cruising and we’re confident the Tanoa Hotel Group will assist us” says Leba Pareti, acting GM of Blue Lagoon Cruises. Both operations are based in Lautoka and both provide services and facilities which are expected to complement eachother in the Fijian market. The New Zealand market will be managed by Richard Crouch, Director of Sales at Tanoa’s Auckland office.

New Zealand travel agents across the country have been brushing up on their cruise industry knowledge at a series of breakfast seminars. Complete Cruise Solution has been to more than 10 areas across New Zealand in the last month conducting their “Makeover Your Cruise Business” business breakfasts. New Zealand Sales Manager Belinda Clark says “It’s been a great way to show our agents the tools they have available to further develop and market our cruise brands, which include P&O Cruises, Princess, Cunard and Carnival Spirit, showing benefits with cruise sales, marketing tools, extra commission and their Win a Cruise promotion. The great response from agents also shows their dedication to building the cruise market here.”

Good times for groups on P&O P&O Cruises has launched a new ‘Events at Sea’ programme, designed to make it even easier for groups to enjoy their cruise holiday. The program features a range of packages tailored for group get togethers, from birthday celebrations to sporting and hobby group meetings and smaller conference and incentive gatherings. Targeting groups from 16 to 250 people, the complimentary packages include an onboard event coordinator, venue hire, audio visual equipment, personalised photo sessions, group dining and welcome receptions.

Sharing benefits key in booming market Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, has released its 2010 Sustainability Report and forecast strong growth to continue with more than a quarter of a million travellers expected to cruise the South Pacific in 2013. The report also addresses the need to ensure island communities are able to share the economic benefits of sustainable cruise tourism. Carnival Australia is already working with a number of communities to connect cruising and economic opportunity and to provide a template for tourism-related business ventures that can be introduced more widely across the South Pacific. “We have a responsibility to ensure the idyllic destinations and unique island cultures that attract cruise visitors are safeguarded. One of the best ways to do this is to make sure island communities share in the economic benefits of cruising” says Australia CEO, Ann Sherry.

All aboard the Island Escape Island Escape will be cruising Vanuatu again in 2012 with its two cruise options, Secrets of Vanuatu, a 6 night escape through Santo and Pentecost, and Islands of Discovery, a 6 night cruise from Port Vila. For those who like a little adventure, taking the family overseas is becoming an increasingly popular holiday option and there are plenty of destinations that have tailored their products to meet the specific requirements of this lucrative travel market. In the South Pacific, there’s no better example of this than Fiji. Fiji has the longest established tourism industry in the South Pacific and over the years they have become experts at providing everything needed for a memorable family holiday. “We’ve been catering to the family market so long we now have three generations of the

same family coming to Fiji. The grandparents started it all off by going to the islands first, then they brought their kids with them and now those kids have their own children and are bringing them too!” says Sala Tongilala, General Manager of Tourism Fiji. “And quite often they will all come on holiday together, which is nice because they’re all enjoying this beautiful place together and they’re passing on a family tradition” she says. So why do Kiwi families come back to Fiji year after year? Because quite simply the Fijian operators can make sure the kids have a great time and make sure Mum and Dad can relax too. A big part of that comes down to the people, in particular the staff whose job it is to keep visiting kids entertained and safe during their stay. ‘Fijians genuinely love children’ says Sala, and anyone who has spent time in Fiji will know what she means. A year ago we took our own family to Denarau and experienced first hand how good the staff can be. Like most four year old boys ours is full of beans and into absolutely everything, but the activities team led by Judas, the super-friendly six foot something local, kept him and the tribe of other Kiwi and Aussie kids totally entertained every day for the week of our stay.

It was brilliant. Treasure hunts, soccer, touch footy, ice cream eating races, swimming races, pool volleyball, flax weaving, collecting crabs and pizza making were just some of the activities on offer and the whole time the kids and the staff loved it. What was even more impressive was that over a year later we returned to the same resort and were once again greeted by big Judas, who actually remembered our son by name. An astounding feat considering the thousands of kids that would have passed through the resort during that time. And that’s the essence of the Fijian family holiday. The staff who organise the activities and play with the kids end up being great friends.

Family friendly. Price friendly For many, the thought of taking the family to Fiji would probably sound like a costly operation. However there are a huge variety of choices that cater to most budgets. In fact many operators offer discounts and special deals for people that make this journey with kids in tow. That might be free meals for kids under a certain age, or the children eat free with the parents or the kids stay free when they share with Mum and Dad. Another example is the deal recently offered by Air Pacific as part of their 60th Birthday Celebrations - a lead fare of $199 return for children from 2 to 11 years old. That’s a great deal in anyone’s book and while it’s a price that’s available for sales up until December 22nd, discounted fares are available year round for children from 2 to 15 years.

Making it easy in Denarau

Plantation Island Resort

First stop for many families is Denarau and its fine selection of resorts. It’s a short drive from Nadi Airport and once you’ve checked in, you really don’t have to move. It’s that easy. Sitting at the northern tip of Denarau is the Fiji Beach Resort & Spa managed by Hilton. In 2011 the resort was named in Fiji’s Top 10 Resorts for Families by Holidays With Kids Magazine, the leading family travel magazine and website in Australasia. It was certainly a feather in the cap for the resort and General Manager, Frederic Lebegue was proud the resort was acknowledged. “When it comes to family holidays, the real experts are Mums and Dads – which is why we’re thrilled with this commendation from families participating in the survey. Our family-focused facilities, such as our dedicated Kids Club, and our accommodation, particularly our two and three-bed homes, are ideal for family stays. More importantly, we consistently deliver our famously warm and friendly ‘extra-mile’ service that makes a family holiday truly special.” Next door at the Sofitel Resort and Spa families are also made to feel at home, literally. The Sofitel has taken the traditional hotel room design and given it a fantastic family twist that gives Mum and Dad privacy and gives the kids their own ‘zone’ complete with Playstation and a super-cool two tier bunk bed. What more could a kid ask for?

Well, how about a waterslide virtually outside your front door (yes, the family rooms have been specifically located to give easy access to the resort’s fantastic watery playground). On top of that kids under 12 years old eat free in the Lagoon Restaurant, plus there are dedicated kids menus at all the other restaurants. A short drive south of Denarau and a three minute boat ride from the mainland you’ll find the stunning Sonaisali Island Resort. Sonaisali is a picture perfect escape that prides itself on being a property where family values are held dear, and where children are looked after by companions and not just minders. It’s a common theme throughout Fiji, but it always rings true. The super friendly staff are fantastic with children off all ages and when it comes to activities the kids are spoilt for choice. The Kids Club has a huge variety of activities including pirate night, learning to speak Fijian, mini aerobics and a spoon diving competition. On top of that they have Fiji’s only Paintball field which the (bigger) kids just love. Sonaisali has imported all the latest protective gear and equipment from Australia, so parents can relax knowing their children will come back in one piece! Another fun adventure for the kids is Sonaisali’s very own Jungle Safari Boat Tour. This leisurely cruise travels up the sheltered waters of the Nadi River, through dense mangrove jungle and cane fields and past the thermal ‘bubbling spring’, giving children (and adults) the chance to see a rare ecosystem and something a little bit different.

Sonaisali Island Resort

Down on the Coral Coast, The Outrigger on the Lagoon has also earned a reputation as a great place to take the kids, winning the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for the Top 3 Best Resort for Families in the South Pacific. At the Outrigger they have two Kids Clubs - Little Riggers for kids between 3-7 years and Beach Riggers for kids from 8-12 years. Once again there’s a huge variety of activities. The Little Riggers have a Groovy Movie Time, colouring-in competitions, Riggers Disco, pass the parcel and can even go along and meet Gweenie the Iguana at the Kalu Eco Park. And the older ones can make aeroplanes, go on scavenger hunts and put on a Meke performance.

Going further afield It’s hard to top a Fijian family holiday at places like Denarau or the Coral Coast, but there are also rewards for those willing to go a bit further afield. The Malolo Island Resort is one such destination and it’s only an hour ferry ride from Port Denarau. In 2010 TripAdvisor Travellers voted Malolo Island the number one resort for families and the number two in the entire South Pacific. Without a doubt, Malolo’s appeal comes from its ability to cater for families with a separate pool, innovative Kids Club programme, entertainment lounge and a dining area for children 13 years and older. The Kids Club in Tia’s Treehouse is the definitely the centre of activity for the kids and is set on the hillside under an enormous mango tree. Its home to a whole host of equipment and games and has a fully fenced playground.

Cook Island News Update Malolo’s “Yanu Yanuprogramme is also a real feature and gives kids the opportunity to live like an islander for one day, two days or a whole week! Free for kids between 4-12 years, the programme mixes a whole lot of fun with learning about environmental issues, the culture and the history of Malolo and Fiji in general. (Who says kids can’t learn anything if they’re out of school). Each day has a different theme such as Natural Environments, Fijian Culture and Arts and Crafts, and lots of different activities like endangered species tours, herbal medicines, language lessons and visits to the local primary school and neighbouring islands. The resort even consulted with the Mamamanuca Environmental Society to make sure the educational content of the programme was accurate - which shows how much this means to them.

Making a day of it

Just south of Malolo is Plantation Island, without question one of Fiji’s most popular family friendly resorts. A major drawcard is that Plantation offers a five star location at an affordable price, so it’s no wonder families love it here. They have some fantastic family packages that include all meals, plus two children under 16 years can stay for free when they share with their parents. The resort has plenty of accommodation options and has also undergone a refurbishment which has seen an upgrade to all its rooms and the restaurant.

For smaller kids there’s the ‘Finding Nemo’ cruise to South Sea Island. It’s just a 30 minute ride away and when you get there you can see the stunning underwater world of the Marine Sanctuary from the comfort of the South Seas semi-submersible vessel “Coral Explorer. Afterwards there’s time to relax ashore, go kayaking or go for a swim or snorkel. At a total of three hours (including the 30 minute trip each way), this shorter but highly entertaining cruise is ideal for those with younger families, and who knows, they might just find Nemo!

Plantation has loads to keep the teenagers busy with activities such as mini golf, volleyball, tennis, banana boats and safe swimming in the lagoon. And the younger ones have more activities than you can throw a coconut at - a jumping castle, fish feeding, t-shirt painting to name just a few. The Coconut Kids Club is open from 9am - 9pm and is free for kids up to 11 years old.

Happy families

The resort can also arrange customised activities for family groups, such as private beach barbeques at the end of the beach or private dining elsewhere. When it’s time for Mum and Dad to get some time on their own, and let’s face it, family holidays aren’t just about the kids, Plantation has babysitters available for the bargain price of F$4 an hour. Perfect!

Malolo Resort

For those who prefer to stay on the mainland, South Seas Cruises offer some superb day trips that are great for families and give them a taste of the outer island experience. One of the most popular family friendly cruises is the full day (7 hours) or half day (4 hours) cruise to Treasure Island Resort. Just a 45 minute ferry ride away, Treasure Island is surrounded by a magnificent marine reserve, making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. Families can also make use of the island’s swimming pool, mini-golf, playground and if it’s the right time of the year, the fabulous turtle pond. And there’s no need to bring your own snorkelling gear, South Seas provide that free of charge.

For ease, options and a holiday that everyone will remember, it’s very hard to go past Fiji. The islands’ properties and operators are experts at not only meeting the needs of Kiwi families, but doing it with a ton of enthusiasm and genuine care. It’s true, the Fijian people have a natural affinity with children, which makes the holiday so much easier and more enjoyable for Mum and Dad. And at the end of the day, that’s what this is all about - a holiday that everyone can enjoy.

Coral Coast Sevens Back to the Coral Coast and the chance to attend Coral Coast sevens tournament and my first thought was “Has it changed since I was last there?” By Jonny Dykes And much to my delight I found that all was well with the world and that the best of the Coral Coast is still in place. From the group playing local songs as I got off the plane to the warm reception I received from all the locals throughout my stay, the friendship and attention was overwhelming. Flying Air Pacific for the first time I found ‘The Island in the Sky’ as good an airline as any I’ve flown lately with a lovely dinner served and as always that friendly Fijian flavour to their service. With Pacific Destinations supplying our transfer we were whisked away in good time to our accommodation for the next few days the Shangri La Fijian Resort. The resort has over 600 rooms with accommodation from ocean side twin and family rooms through to the more deluxe honeymoon style bures which are situated right on the beach. The range and styles of restaurants is extensive with over 16 restaurants available. My favourite feature of the resort was the quaint little chapel which has sweeping views of the ocean behind the alter. On my first morning I was driven into Sigatoka to watch the teams from the sevens tournament parade through the town and into the stadium for the opening ceremony. What a sight to see these local teams walk through the streets cheering and dancing with almost as much flair as they were about to bring to the rugby field. The Fijian rugby band impressed with some funky dancing to add some style to their brass music. The Coral Coast put on the weather for the first day and the crowds flocked in throughout the afternoon. They were treated to some great running rugby. Alongside the locals there were also teams from New Zealand and an invitational team from Serevi’s rugby club in Washington, each of which added their own style to the mix of the tournament.

David Campese and Serevi present Player of the Tournament Medal

The Coral Coast Sevens is in its second year and has doubled in both the number of teams and supporters from last year. With legends David Campese and Waisali Serevi as the tournament ambassadors the anticipation and hype surrounding the tournament was obvious throughout the Coral Coast. With Serevi captaining his US based side and Campese coming on as the technical advisor for the local team the ‘Sigatoka Warriors’ the tournament had two outstanding attractions still involved and in the thick of it. Serevi still managed to display some of the skills that created his reputation as the best sevens player to ever come out of Fiji. Day two was well received by what seemed like all of Fiji. People had travelled from all over Fiji to be there and for the first time the stadium at the ground was sold out. With the two New Zealand teams and Serevis team not making the cup playoffs the major finals were strictly local teams. The day was full of great rugby but my lasting memory will be of the energy, singing, cheering and dancing from the crowd who truly brought a fabulous atmosphere to theTournament. As the final game drew to a close, won soundly by the local prison warden’s team over the local police team, thoughts turned to next years tournament. With Serevi and his team hoping to return and David Campese wanting to be involved again it will undoubtedly be an even bigger success. It truly was a credit to Jay White and his management team, all the players but most importantly the people of Sigatoka, the Coral Coast and Fiji. They should be proud.

We’ve got the South Pacific in the palm of our hands.

Exploring the Coral Coast Sigatoka, Koro Levu, Korotogo and Natadola - not necessarily the first names people think of when planning a trip to Fiji but they really should be. They are all part of the Coral Coast, that delightful part of Viti Levu halfway between Nadi and Suva. The Coral Coast is an easy 90 minute drive from Nadi International Airport and features one of the world’s largest fringing coral reefs. The coast stretches over 75 kilometres and features fantastic mangrove forests; delightful Fijian villages and a series of attractive white sand beaches. A range of outstanding lodges and resorts are scattered along the coast and provide the ultimate in relaxation and enjoyment of the best that Fiji has to offer. In addition to the relaxation that cannot be avoided at the resorts, the Coral Coast has plenty to occupy the discerning visitors holiday time. Sigatoka, the largest town on the Coral Coast is predominantly Indian and features interesting architecture and attractions. Situated on the Sigatoka River, the town has a vibrant market displaying exotic gifts, souvenirs and local works of art. Well worth a bit of time browsing and haggling with the local merchants, the Sigatoka Market is shopping how it should be. Plenty to do for the more adventurous - make sure you take a fantastic and exhilarating jet boat ride up the impressive Sigatoka River and enjoy an opportunity to visit an authentic Fijian village; take a walk across the extensive Sigatoka Sand Dunes; take the authentic Sugar Train along the coast to the magnificent beach at Natadola; visit the Tavunui Hill fortress established by Tongan invaders in the 18th century; enjoy diving offered by all resorts on the Coral Coast and

for the truly adventurous enjoy some great surfing at Frigates Pass. The famous left hand break is only reached by boat from Waidroka Bay and is part of an extensive range of reef breaks on the Coast - not for the inexperienced or faint hearted. If something more gentle is preferred there is a very manageable beach break at Sigatoka. A great option is to take an eco-tour through the local limestone caves and villages where the authentic Kava experience creates an even more relaxed atmosphere and feeling for visitors. Mountain biking is available with plenty of opportunities to hire bikes and to undertake the reasonably testing inland roads. And then there is the alternative of lying on the beach or by the pool just enjoying the laid back Fijian life style that is a positive characteristic of this delightful part of Viti Levu. Plans for a visit to Fiji should and must include the Coral Coast. Accommodation available ranges from the 5 star Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa at Natadola Beach or the 5 star Outrigger on the Lagoon to some excellent 3 and 4 star hotels, lodges and resorts. All offer great accommodation options to suit all budgets and all tastes. Wherever you choose to stay and however you choose to pass your time, the Coral Coast offers something special that should not be missed.
