From the President’s Desk Greetings. By now, most of the holidays are behind us and 2015 looms just ahead. Let me take this opportunity on behalf of all of us on the HOA Board to wish each of you the very happiest and healthiest of new years as well as twelve months of opportunities to grow in wisdom as well as age. Unlike our northern friends, we don’t have to hibernate as soon as the last of the wrappings and ornaments are put away: Del Tura’s activity and entertainment schedule is as full as ever: that calendar you got for Christmas will be full before you know it. And allow me to encourage you to make

it even fuller by volunteering to help out with one of these events. Retirement doesn’t mean rocking chairs anymore—except as a place to stow your golf shoes and your swim goggles (all of which you can throw on the floor if you want to rock while reading your Tower). A very gentle reminder: 2015 HOA membership dues should be paid before the first of the year. Your participation in the HOA is very important to its continuing and helps support much of the programming and much of the entertainment that residents take for granted; moreover, it gives you first dibs for most ticketed events

as well as a subscription to The Tower. Membership also confers voting privileges for Board elections and decisions to mediate. We think you can’t find anywhere that $12 will buy you more. One final note: Barry, if you’re somewhere looking over us, I want you to know that the turn lane going north is now actually long enough to enter and roll to— rather than screech to—a stop. For this we owe you a belated but heartfelt debt of thanks. Wish you were here to see it. Happy New Year, Everyone.

from our life experiences that we have “no control” over what obstacles we will encounter in 2015. That my friends, is a good thing! We cannot allow ourselves to think about what might or might not happen tomorrow. We have to focus on each new day and surround ourselves with people that fill those days with lots of love and laughter. Let the positive, warm, loving, pleasant memories of the past and the pleasurable moments of the present be the fuel that energizes your outlook as we enter into this New Year. Hug a little tighter, visit a little longer, take time to play a little more. Listen to your heart and let it lead you. Love, through each new day. Wishing each of you a very Blessed and Happy New Year!

As we think back and reflect on the beginning of each New Year one cannot help to feel a bit melancholy. The holiday rush and the excitement of preparing for the holiday celebrations with our families and friends has come and gone in a blink of an eye, or so it seems. The tree and its decorations are put away and the house feels extremely bare. Once again we are consumed by the quiet that surrounds us and we think to ourselves, how can this be January 2015, wasn’t it just…??? That’s when we begin to wander back to the Januarys of the past remembering when the New Year brought us so many unexpected pleasures. Those pleasures became the treasures that we hold dear in our hearts today. Some of us will wander back and relive the times of our youth, while others

will reminisce our later years. As I am writing this I’m thinking back to how the Januarys of my youth would bring those blizzards that would gleefully greet us each New Year. Here I am feeling all excited once again as I visualize the scene. Snowdrifts as high as the roof tops! Remember how the excitement would grow with each snowflake! Running from window to window and constantly checking the radio for school cancellations? Why was it that our school district seemed to be the very last one to be called off? (And did Foster Glouster ever have school in the winter?) So much fun! A New Year holds promise, the unknown, the unexpected…we enter into it with a feeling of hope that our lives will be blessed with all good things! Although each New Year will bring along with it some unpleasantness, we know

FISH NEWS December was certainly a very busy month. We started with the Christmas Tree Lighting and Jacquie Keen’s entertaining Christmas show. Who knew that we have so many talented people here in Del Tura? Then we finished the month, and the year, with New Year’s Eve. No matter where you celebrated the New Year coming in I hope it was amazing. In January all the 90 yearsof-age and older will receive an invitation to the February 3 lun-

cheon to be held at Heron Glen’s restaurant. The invitation will be for each over-90 resident and their companion. There is no cost to anyone. If, when you receive the invitation, you have no one to escort you, please call me. There are many people in FISH who would be happy to drive you and escort you into the restaurant and sit with you and then see that you will get home safely. When you receive your invitation please give me a quick call

so we can let the restaurant know how many people will be coming. Isn’t it nice that we can go out on February 3 and not have to worry about boots, coats, gloves and scarves. Three cheers for Florida! Have a happy and joyful 2015! Don’t forget that FISH is here to assist you throughout the years. Ginnie Benjamins, President 239-322-9863

Laishley’s Crab House 100 E. Rhetta Esplanade Punta Gorda, Fl. 33950 (941) 205.5566 By Jack Ulr Recently my wife and I with friends, while driving to Punta Gorda, decided to find a nice restaurant to sit and relax and have a leisurely lunch. We stopped at Laishley’s Crab House Restaurant located at 1200 W. Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda, Fl. 33950. We were pleasantly surprised with their ultra-prominent location on the Peace River. The view

of the river and Marina is as good as it gets. This place could serve really bad food and still put people in seats. That not being the case with the food, the lunch menu was large and varied. We were all pleased and full by the time we finished our meals. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive. I would recommend an evening dinner, because the sunsets must be spectacular and romantic. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone. You can view their menu online at www. smugglers.com. Restaurant Review Editor Note

The Tower is featuring a restaurant review as an addition to our issues. If you want to participate in reviewing a restaurant you enjoyed, Doris Meyer will accept a review sent as an email to her with an attachment. Her email is moredor1034@aol.com. If you do not have a computer you may type or print your review and bring it to the HOA office. If you submit a review you must provide your full name. Your name will not be published unless you choose to see your name in print. Only FAVORABLE reviews will be published.

“MOVEMBER” DONATIONS EXCEED GOALS

By Bart DeGraaf

Once again the residents of Del Tura have proven their spirit of giving. “MOVEMBER”, the month long November funds drive to support men’s health awareness, was a grand success, raising more than $2,100. The event’s planners had set an ambitious goal of $1,500 only to see it exceeded by some 30%. The MOVEMBER national charity returns more than 83% of the funds collected to research into the prevention and cures of Prostate and

Testicular Cancers along with support for men’s mental health programs. This year’s campaign included distribution of more than 200 moustaches for donations, “MOVEMBER at the Pub” with everyone sporting “MO’s”, a garage style sale in the parking lot (aptly named Junk in the Trunk) with 30 stalls “rented”, and The Moustache Ball, a 50’s - 60’s themed dance attended by more than 150 nostalgic party goers. Special thanks to Nick and the Pub staff for creating a fun night and to

Jerry Leafer, our very own Jerry the DJ, for providing the musical mood. Thank you to all who donated to this very special charity. And thank you to all who volunteered to help with ticket sales, decorations, publicity, moustache wearing, party planning, pictures, moustache growing and all the small things that make this a success but aren’t seen. Oh, yeah, did we mention moustache growing and showing. As we say down in the south, “Y’all are special!”.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Project

First and foremost I wish to thank Charlene and Ron Ruotolo for doing a wonderful job organizing this project. They made my job much easier. They work on this all year long. We provided 70 families with a full Thanksgiving dinner and a full Christmas ham dinner plus all the extra food donations that help them a little with everyday life. Plus every single person in every family receives a gift for Christ-

mas. The little ones get toys, the teens get an article of clothing and every Mom, Dad and Grandparent and lives in that household gets a gift. We leave out no one. This happens because of Charlene always looking for the 30% coupons that she uses on the clearance racks, thanks to your cash donations. Now my thanks to all the volunteers who helped me pull this

At Alice Harris’ eightieth birthday party, I realized how many people consider Alice their forever friend. Yes, she is understanding, caring, helpful, amusing, clever, etc., etc., etc. She has been involved in so many activities in Del Tura throughout the past several years including serving as president of the Good Timers, HMO representative, wall committee and welcoming committee member, HOA office and FISH volunteer. She has been a member of several holiday pageants, and a Tower staff member as well. When I first came to Del Tura, Alice was one of the very first people I met, and I said to myself, if the other people are anything like Alice, I certainly made the right choice to move here. I, as well as so many others, are fortunate to have Alice as a treasured friend. Happy Birthday, Alice! At our December meeting, we greeted guests Vicky Lankamer and Charlie Zito whom we hope will decide to become members of the Good Timers. This was Peg McTernan’s last meeting as president. Job well done! BRAVO, Peg! Members were gifted with good food, and the opportunity to celebrate with friends at the annual Christmas dinner hosted by Peg and other officers at our own Fountain Grille. We celebrated the December birthdays of Linda Leeper, Alice Harris, Nancy Skorlinski, Brenda Blasie, Serafina Goncalves, and Fred Mendenhall. As always, the Yankee Swap provided much laughter. The whereabouts and date of the January birthday dinner will be announced and discussed at the Tuesday, January 6, meeting at 5:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse. We will serenade our January birthday celebrants, Marge Applebaum, Lee Arthur, Millie Hanrahan and Lillian Klopp at that time. The dinner will be hosted by our new president, Mary Lou Pudlo,

Join and share good times with other Del Turians during 2015. As we start a new year, I, as others, can look back at last year and reflect on the many good times we shared, and that is wonderful. Having my Dad pass last month, I treasure even more the willingness of friends to share the not so good times with one another. That is what makes living in Del Tura something to cherish. On behalf of the Good Timers, we wish you happiness, good health, and peace in 2015.

Entertainment News

01/15

By Heléne M. Glasson

5/13

12/14

The Christmas and New Year’s holidays are over and I hope all of you have had time to catch your breath. The Entertainment Committee has a really entertaining show planned for you on Saturday, January 17, and I want to tell you more about these two very talented entertainers. Following is a brief biography for each. DAN ST. PAUL After a seven-year stint of headlining San Francisco clubs in the comedy duo Murphy-St. Paul, Dan launched out on his own with a solo act that was to land him in the finals of the nation’s toughest comedy competition, The San Francisco International Stand-Up Comedy Competition. Soon after, Dan moved to Los Angeles and appeared on several episodes of “An Evening at the Improv”, plus numerous shows on VH-1, MTV, and Comedy Central. Since then, he has opened for such superstars as Jerry Seinfeld, Natalie Cole, Dwight Yoakum, Smokey Robinson, and Vince Gill. In a testament to the class of his act, Dan even opened for the San Francisco Symphony (“These guys are great! I knew them back when they were just a

garage band.”). He appeared in the movie “Flubber” with Robin Williams, and signed a recording deal with MCA records. His CD, “Natural and Good for You” contains one of the most requested comedy pieces on radio, “The First Baseball Game”. He also is the star of his own one-man play, “Outer Mission, Middle Class - The Comic Diary of an Immigrant’s Son.” The Los Angeles Theater and Entertainment Review said about Dan, “Combining a sharp, clean wit with an outstanding talent for creating characters, Dan’s show appeals to audiences of all ages...what sets Dan apart is that he doesn’t just tell jokes, but rather creates a series of comedic events.” Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Italian from UC Berkeley, a teaching credential from San Francisco State, and a Master’s Degree in special education, the majority of Dan’s material comes from being a suburban husband and father and dealing with the frustrations of everyday life. Dan lives in Foster City, CA with his wife Cara and his son Roy. CHRIS POJE Chris Poje is originally from Queens, NY where he owned

and performed in live bands from 1975 – 1994. In 2001, Chris retired from the NYPD as a Detective Sergeant, after completing 20 years of service and moved to Lititz, PA in Lancaster County. Chris now owns Chris Poje Productions and performs at over 100 events each year. We are very lucky to have him with us as he is only here in Florida during February 2015. In 2010, Chris won the title of “PA State Senior Idol” in a statewide singing contest, performing his moving renditions of “Unchained Melody” and “My Way”. Chris’ charm and entertaining personality bring fun and excitement to his interactive show. Chris looks forward to enjoying the good life of a “Snow Bird” and performing for Florida audiences in the winter months. His show encompasses the hits of the Rat Pack through ‘50s – ‘60s rock ‘n roll to contemporary artists; something for everyone! There is a flyer for this show elsewhere in The Tower with all the information regarding the ticket sale dates and prices, etc. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the show!

Citrus Trees Require Careful Research The following article is being reprinted here with permission of the Riverland Nursery, which is located at 13005 Palm Beach Blvd in East Fort Myers. riverlandnursery.com

10/15

Before purchasing a citrus tree, homeowners should research citrus greening disease and then decide if they want to invest the time and money to cultivate a healthy citrus tree. Citrus greening disease (HLB) is a disease, which has devastated citrus groves across the country. It is spread by the saliva of the Asian citrus psyllid insect, which feeds on the leaves of citrus.

15

The disease attacks the root system, ultimately causing the decline and death of the tree. The early symptoms of HLB appear on leaves as vein yellowing and asymmetrical discoloration. Other symptoms can include notches on the leaf edge, irregular, discolored and/or bitter fruit and fruit drop and branch dieback. All citrus varieties are susceptible and root damage occurs before the symptoms appear. Although there is no cure, scientist and the citrus industry have developed effective methods for combating the effects of greening. Homeowners who wish to grow

backyard citrus can duplicate these methods. The methods are: • Controlling the Asian psyllid by using a systemic root drench containing imidacloprid every two months. • Applications of a high quality, controlled-release fertilizer. • Regular applications of a foliar fertilizer developed for citrus. • Consistent irrigation, proper pruning, sunny location, good drainage and maintaining the root area free of weeds, grass and mulch. • Elimination of any lakeview or orange jasmine plants on the property because this plant is a host plant for the Asian citrus psyllid.

What Can You Learn from the “Oracle of Omaha”? Warren Buffet, the “Oracle from Omaha,” is considered one of the most successful investors in history. Yet while the investment world may seem complex, Mr. Buffet’s advice is actually pretty simple. Here are a few Buffet quotes, along with some suggestions on putting them to use:

“Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.” Essentially, this means you should look for good investment vehicles whose price may have dropped. A “bear” market tends to drag down many stocks — even those with strong fundamentals and favorable prospects. These stocks might then be considered “bargains.” One way to determine whether a stock is “expensive” or “cheap” is by looking at its price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). For example, if Company “A” has a share price of $20 and earnings per share of $4, then it has a P/E of 5. On the other hand, if Company “B” has the same share price of $20, but has earnings per share of $2, its P/E would be 10. So it would be considered more expensive than Company “A.” Be aware, though, that the P/E ratio works better as a measure of cost when you are comparing two companies in the same industry.

“Time is the friend of the wonderful business, the enemy of the mediocre.” Be prepared to own quality stocks for the long term; over time, your confidence may be rewarded. On the other hand, if an investment is not of high quality quality, its flaws will be revealed over the years.

“If investors insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.” Trying to “time” the market — that is, attempting to buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high — is a difficult task. Too many people do just the opposite: They try to “cut their losses” by selling when the market is down and then go after the “hot” investment whose price may already be as high as it’s going to go. Mr. Buffet clearly is not in favor of a market timing approach, and those who try to do it, he says, are probably better off by going against the crowd. Keep in mind, though, that even when holding investments rather than trying to time the market, investing in equities does involve risk, including potential loss of principal.

“When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever.” When should you sell good investments? Never, according to Mr. Buffet. And while this endless holding period may not be possible for all of us, you get the idea: the longer you keep a good investment, the better off you may be when you do sell.

“The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs. Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money.” The lesson here? Be an investor, not a speculator. A long run-up in the market can increase your wealth, but it may also make you prone to risky behavior if you think that all your investments will rise indefinitely. As an investor, you may well want to consider Mr. Buffet’s ideas— after all, they’ve sure worked well for him.

the deck with all sails unfurled as you attempt to catch a Confederate blockade runner. The nautical references are easy to understand and the writing style is easy to read; the characters are believable and compelling. Robert Macomber, who resides in the nearby area is currently working on his twelfth volume of the Peter Wake series. In subsequent novels, young Peter Wake gains bigger ships to command, a family, and a constant conflict between his duty as husband and father and the call of his nation for his service. At the Edge of Honor won the 2003 Patrick D. Smith Literary Award for Best Historical Novel of Florida, the first of several awards honoring Robert Macomber’s books. Local Naval Historian Gains Wide Readership If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading Robert Macomber’s work you haven’t enjoyed firstrate historical fiction of southwest Florida. At the Edge of Honor is Macomber’s first of eleven novels in his “Honors Series” that tells the story of a young New Englander, Peter Wake, who enlists in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. Wake, whose plans had included skippering a family schooner as a fifth generation sailor, is assigned to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron as part of a larger effort to strangle trade between the Confederate States and the outside world. Headquartered at Key West, Ensign Wake learns about leadership, sacrifice, love, and violence as his ship patrols Florida’s west coast. This story

provides lots of sailing, some combat, some troubled romance with the daughter of a prominent Southern sympathizer, and lots of vivid descriptions of southwest Florida when only a few settlers and native peoples populated its coast and islands. Wake’s adventures include an intelligence gathering mission in Havana and a brush with the Royal Navy in the Bahamas. But central to the story is a young commander of an armored sloop who is thrown into a war of brother against brother, the great and bloody American Civil War. Sometimes compared to the English naval historian and novelist Patrick O’Brian whose monumental series of books centered on the character of “Lucky” Jack Aubrey, Robert Macomber’s series is more character-centered and less ship-centered. That doesn’t mean that you won’t be rolling on

A bit of thanks and praise is going out to our very own Dot Brown on Catalina. Dot has been the manager of All Souls Episcopal Church Thrift Store in North Fort Myers since the first of the year and has worked there for a couple years before. The News-Press’ Artful Shopper column recently featured Dot and the work she does for the store. The store sells clothing for men, women and children including antiques, toys, books and lots of furniture and accessories. They also have their own “loan closet” as we

do with walkers and wheel chairs. She is very pleased with the store’s organization and cleanliness and the store offers more reasonable prices than other thrift stores. On Thursdays, they do free pickups for furniture and larger donations and deliveries for $25. There are customer appreciation days with pastries and coffee. Most importantly, the store is associated with the church’s outreach program for the residents of North Fort Myers, who apply for food and other services. Those that qualify are able to shop in the “bargain room” with a fixed amount per month that can be

spent there. Recently the store gave out $1200 worth of clothes to those in need. Proceeds from the store go back into the church’s ministry including (ESL) English as a Second Language and the Outreach Program. The store is located at 14640 N. Cleveland Ave. in North Fort Myers and their hours are 9:00 am4:00 p.m. Tuesday thru Saturday, closed Mondays. The telephone number is 656-6229 and their website is www.all-souls.dioswfl. org/thrift/store. Visit the store - you may find a bargain and be sure to say hi to Dot!

Know Your Volunteer(s) Ginnie And Gerry Benjamins

By Barbara Rouillard

Ginnie and Gerry Benjamins will be married 40 years in March 2015. As I took their picture Ginnie said, “And we still really like each other!” After you get to know Ginnie and Gerry, you will really like them, too! I felt so uplifted after meeting this lovely couple. Gerry was born in Indonesia, and moved to Holland when he was ten years old. He and his family were sponsored by two doctors and came to America when he was 12 years old and settled in Alfred, NY. He was naturalized when he was 16. Ginnie grew up in Philadelphia in a pre-Civil War home on a cobblestone street. Gerry graduated as a ceramic engineer and moved to Philadelphia. A former girlfriend of his set him up on his first date with Ginnie! She had two children from a previous marriage and told him she would go out with him if he paid for the babysitter. He said,

“Sure” and the rest is history! The couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Gerry joined the C.A. Litzler Company. In the thirty seven years with this company he taught himself electrical engineering and eventually became head of the electric design group. Gerry traveled the world extensively, and Ginnie would join him when she could. Together, they traveled to China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Canada and all over the United States. Ginnie was a kindergarten teacher, a school bus driver, and worked as Head of Transportation at the Lake Ridge Private School. The last fifteen years that she worked was in the office of a chemical company. Eight years ago, they were traveling in Southwest Florida searching for a residence and community. They were having lunch at Sabal Springs and a person came over to chat and told them about Del Tura. They visited Del Tura and fell in love with it! In 2006, they moved

into 1131 La Paloma Blvd. Ginnie and Gerry both volunteer their time in many ways. Ginnie is a past president of HOA, and Gerry a past treasurer of HOA. They both have worked on the Entertainment Committee bringing in a variety of acts and musicians for the dances. Gerry is an avid tennis player and does the coordination of the tennis league. He is also very good at the card game Hand and Foot! Ginnie currently acts as president of FISH (Friends in Service Here). Gerry is the treasurer. Ginnie prepares the agenda for FISH meetings and chairs the meeting the first Tuesday of every month. She oversees eighty six active volunteers who are already planning events for 2015! FISH is self-sustaining and relies on the generous donations of our community. Ginnie also works on The Tower doing proofreading and has been the Co-Editor for the last three years. Ginnie and Gerry have big,

Ginnie And Gerry Benjamins warm smiles and hearts of gold. I came away from them feeling their genuine love of giving back to the community of Del Tura and

their love for each other! Thank you, Gerry and Ginnie, for making our lives richer by your contributions.

Our Del Tura Flag Monument By Jay Flanagan

Those of us who were fortunate enough to attend the very impressive Veteran’s Day ceremonies must be very proud of our Memorial dedicated to the

9/11 tragedy and all of our servicemen. The committee who put Del Tura’s tribute together should be praised for their work on the festivities. We Del Turians must also be thankful for the group who spearheaded the con-

struction of what, I am sure, is a remembrance second to none in any community like ours. However, I have heard that the committee in charge of the memorial is nearly out of funds to ensure the continued upkeep and

other construction additions that may be planned and financially feasible. We must always have a budget large enough to keep our prize in tiptop shape. Please consider a donation the Memorial Fund so they can continue their

fine and dedicated work on our tribute. Monies can be directed to the fund and left in the Hometown Management office or by contacting members of the committee.

Del Tura Craft Fair for Charity a Great Success!

12/11/14

2:32 PM 2/15

This year the Craft Fair celebrated its 28th year. The object of the Fair is to raise money for charity. The amount raised and donated was $1,600.00. As usual the residents of Del Tura Golf and Country Club came to my aid, allowing me to produce another success. We had over forty vendors and they went home very happy with their profits. This year the amount of residents renting tables has increased. I have not seen as many resident vendors in the six years I have been coordinating the Fair. Of course, there are many non-resident vendors who come back year after year to sell their wares, so, we must be doing something right! My thanks to everyone who

helped me out this year - and in years past. It takes a lot of manpower to put on the Fair. There are many aspects of the Fair: Not only signing up the vendors and finding them tables, there is; setting up the tables and breaking them down again, keeping our roadside sign up to date; setting up the sound system, purchasing and setting up the wine for Friday evening and giving out the wine to the residents. There is managing the parking and the traffic, for both, the vendors and the patrons, organizing the raffle, selling the tickets, drawing the many winners, calling winning tickets and delivering the prizes. There is also organizing and cooking the hot dog lunch, then selling the meal tickets. Last but by no means least, “Walkers”!

These folks make sure that the patrons are aware that there is another whole Craft Fair in the three ballrooms down the hall. They must walk about twenty miles between Friday and Saturday and they never complain. The walkers also help folks fill out patrons raffle tickets with their name and phone number and make sure they get their ticket in the correct bag. Well now you know what it takes to make the Craft Fair work. We have many balls in the air at any given time. I want to thank all the residents who volunteer year after year to do these chores in order to make it a fun day for all our residents. I also want to thank all the residents who attend the Craft Fair. It would not work at all without you!

He loved his years living in Del Tura and the kind, caring people who reside here, and so do we. Rae, Susan, Deb, Ron, and Barbara

By Jack Blevons Happy 2015! Another year has passed, ever so quickly. It is probably a good thing for some who are hoping for a better 2015 and maybe sadly for others because as we age, the time and days are passing by too quickly. It seems when we are young, we can’t get old fast enough and now the older we get there is no way to slow down “Father Time.” So, we need to live each and every day to the fullest, be thankful for what we have from one day to the next as we all know there are millions upon millions who don’t have it as good as we do living here in beautiful Del Tura. The year 2015 marks twenty wonderful years for me here in Del Tura and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! Back to living in paradise again! Back to shuffleboard!

As I write this today, December 5, we have just finished our fourth week. The standings after the fourth week are as follows. The “A” flight leaders are Bob/ Donna Crawford in 1st place with a 12/0 win/loss record. In 2nd place are Dave/Nancy Denny at 11/1 and they are followed by Ben Hargraves/Joe Vigillante in 3rd place at 10/2. In the “B” flight in 1st place are Gail Hargraves/ Judy Lessard at 6/6 and they are followed by 4-teams with records of 5/7. They are: Glenn/Diana Camp, Leon/Mary Lou Buss, Lynne Sable/Barb Jones, and Audrey Person/Deb Taylor. By the next time I write for the February Tower, the list could change a lot. It’s a long season until we end in March. I also want to mention that January brings a lot of renters

and visitors into our paradise here and just a friendly reminder, the courts are there for everyone’s use. Hometown has been very good to us maintaining our courts and also providing equipment for our enjoyment to play. They replaced all our old benches last year with new ones and this year have been installing new lights above our score-boards. Whether you play in groups, or by yourselves or with guests, please respect the rules which state to not walk on the courts themselves, treat all the equipment as if it is yours and please supervise children that you bring there to play. The equipment costs money. Janet and myself will try to make the repairs on the push sticks with parts again provided by Hometown. So, have fun, enjoy the game and respect the rules that are posted on the side of the shack down there. Thanks for your time in reading this.

Del Tura Amigos By Jay Flanagan

1/15

The Del Tura Amigos, sporting new players, open their season on Monday January 5, 2015, against Pine Lakes and conclude the week on Wednesday, January 7, playing last years champion Lake Fairways. Both games have a starting time of 5:30 p.m. with Monday’s contest following the Mark and Mary Ford League’s opening ceremonies featuring Del Tura’s Mary Ford throwing out the first pitch. All the league games are played at the Carmalita Sports Complex at the corner of Florida St. and Carmalita Blvd. in Punta Gorda. The complex can be reached from Del Tura by traveling north on 41 past Tuckers Grade to a

right onto Taylor Rd. (look for the SWFC sign.) Follow Taylor past Walmart to Airport Rd. (2nd stop light), take a right and a left on Florida (do not cross the Inter-

state.) The complex is approximately one mile up Florida on the

left. The Amigos who have a 49 win 8 loss and 2 tie win and lost record over the past three seasons, are again looking forward to an outstanding season. The team is returning nineteen of twenty players from last year’s roster and have added additional strength with infielders Dan Duffy, Vaughn Wedge, Bob Neilson, Jeff Baker and returning Rick Robbins. Also added are outfielders Don Castle, Bart DeGraaf and Jack Theriault. Team depth should be a great help to the teams success this season. The Amigos are always looking for community support and hope fans will take the drive to the park and follow them each Monday and Wednesday from January 5 through March 27, 2015.

18-Hole Women’s Golf Association By Carol Marra November seemed to fly by and we headed into December with many golf and holiday events to keep everyone busy. November 13, 19 and 20, we participated in the Club Championship. There was some debate over 5 wood versus a hybrid, 8 iron or a wedge for chipping, but most of the conversation the second and third day of the tournament centered around scarf or turtle neck, long underwear or wool sweater, ear muffs or knit hat (or both)! We managed to pick two very cold days but we all survived, played some inspired golf, even had playoffs to settle the final winners. Our 2014 Club Champion is Paula Lafreniere. This is the fifth time Paula has won. A big congratulations to Paula. Congratulations to all our win-

ners, Paula, Yvonne, one of our newest members, and Joan, one of our more senior members. Great golf, not always ideal conditions, but I think I can safely say we all enjoyed the challenge. At the Golf Banquet held December 5, in addition to the Club Champions, we honored the winners of the President’s Cup, which took place last March. Ryder Cup Team wins! Our ladies played against Burnt Store on Monday, December 8 and won. Del Tura had not won in a few years so it was very exciting to be victorious. In December we also had our Member-Member Tournament on the 10th and 11th. At our December Christmas luncheon on the 18th the winners were announced and birdie pins (most birdies in each flight) were given out. with a special pin. (Sorry, only one per player, Debbi and Micki!) We also had the installation of Officers for 2015: They will be: PresidentLynne Miller, Vice-President-Jan Pedersen, Secretary-Carol Marra, Treasurer-Michele Reese. Contact Liz Flannigan at 5431640 if you are interested in joining our Association. It is possible to be a year-round member or an Associate Member if you are only here for a few months. Liz can explain your options. On December 3, four of us went to Cross Creek for an Invitational. The Invitational includes breakfast, golf, lots of prizes and lunch. It turned out to be a beautiful day with prizes for everyone as well as a 50/50 raffle. The next Invitational is February 10, at Maple Leaf. Sign up in the Dungeon. See Jan Pedersen with any questions. The next LEGA event is at Pine Lakes on January 14. Sign up in the Dungeon. If you have any questions ask Ruth Ann Blevins. LEGA is for everyone, the tournament is flighted and cash prizes are sent to our Pro Shop. And lunch is included!!

The Red Hat Sizzlers Are looking for NEW Members. If you are interested in joining us for lunch, please call Lynne Mack at 543-6084 (after 10:00 a.m. please).

Other events in December included an ABCD tournament on December 20 and Glow Ball the 26th. January 1 will start with the traditional Bloody Mary Open. Two corrections from last month. The policy, as you probably have already discovered, of

needing to spend your Pro Shop money, has changed and you can spend it at your leisure. Also, although she is a great golfer, Maria Soper, in fact, had her Holein-One on 7 North, not 5! Happy New Year to everyone. Stay healthy and active.

Two weeks of tough competition crowned the winners of our President’s Cup tournament. Our Club Championship will be January 14 and 15 and preparations continue for our Invitational on March 12. Choralaires

An Important Notice

To one and all, Choralaires of the past the present, or new faces who would like to sing, we WILL be having a Spring Concert on Friday, March 13, 2015. Spring singing is really fun! You don’t have to “read” music and do not have to “tryout”, just come and sing with us. Edna Smith, our director for over eighteen years,

will once again lead us into song and let us have fun doing it. We look forward to seeing the “old familiar faces” and hopefully some new ones too. So come and join us and enjoy singing the new program she has planned. We will start rehearsals on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. and also on Tuesday January 6, 2015, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Don’t forget to come!

Dinner Party with Live Jazz performed by the SWFL Symphony Youth Orchestra Location: Sabal Springs Golf & Racquet Club 3410 Clubview Drive North Fort Myers __________

Please leave both your name and telephone number. Thank you, Peggy
