FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Summer in Tara Woods is always an adventure. Just a few tidbits of what’s happening here: • May 24th, our new Community Manager, Angi Cummins, started. • May 31st, residents enjoyed a Memorial Day party in the Clubhouse while reverently remembering all those who gave all for us to be able to live and thrive here in the United States and in Tara Woods. Special thank you to all the residents and Hometown America who donated to the flag fund and the flag team who placed over 1,800 flags in our community. Quite a sight! • June 2nd Vice President Sue Cook and I met with and welcomed Angi. We had the opportunity to share our residents’ most urgent concerns and an array of other subjects. We look forward to a solid working relationship. • June 8th, your Tara Woods Homeowners Association Board of Directors met to discuss Association business. Minutes can be viewed at www. twhoa.net. One major board decision was the sun setting of the modified by-law changes implemented September 2020 due to COVID-19 and the return to our regular by-laws. • June 17th, residents gathered at the Poland food truck to try some kielbasa, pierogies, potato pancakes, Hungarian goulash and more. • June 30th, members of your Board of Directors,

Chris Olson, Dennis Purks and myself, met with Community Manager Angi to discuss community improvement issues. Minutes of this meeting can be viewed at www.twhoa.net. • Early in June, work started on the main pool and tile replacement project. Progress on this important amenity has hit a number of road blocks but continues to move ahead and will provide all residents with a quality product for many years to come. • June/July activities such as Bingo, Senior Exercise, Bunco, Hand and Foot, Tai Chi, Inspiration, Mah Jongg, Aggravation, and more, started back up in the Clubhouse. Saturday Morning Coffee at 7:45 AM, along with a short informative business meeting at 8:45 AM, saw increased attendance and the opportunity to meet new residents and friends. Join us.

• July 4th, saw a wonderful celebration tribute to our freedom with a star-studded golf cart parade led by the North Fort Myers Fire Department. This was followed by fellowship and games in the Clubhouse. Thank you, Janet Daly, and friends, for all their hard work putting this celebration together and to Hometown America for the prizes that were awarded to the three winners of the golf cart parade. DID YOU KNOW THAT – on our website, as a member of the Tara Woods Homeowners Association, you can post classified advertisements to sell or buy personal property, rent your home, or look for homes to rent. This is FREE to members – CHECK IT OUT – www.twhoa.net. Lou Dunning, President loudunning2@gmail.com ~ 239-240-5847

FMO NEWS: TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS THE LAW OFFICE OF NORMA HAND BRILL,

Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation since 1996 Board Certified by the Florida Bar since 1998

Wills, Trusts, rusts, Durable Powers of Attorney, y, Health Ca y Care Directives, Probate, Long Term Care Planning

I hope everyone is having a safe, happy, and healthy summer. I look forward to everyone’s safe return to Tara Woods. It is hoped that with more and more residents and Floridians being vaccinated and more and more of Florida is opening up, we are having a slow return to normal. We are hoping that FMO will once again be able to hold meetings, as more communities open their facilities to guests. With that thought in mind, hopefully meetings will begin in November. The FMO leadership is working behind the scenes, staying in contact with our legislature representatives and keeping our name in front of those in the know. More information will follow

when available. Finally, when you go to Bingo, don’t forget to thank the FMO for making it possible. Because of the dollar amounts involved, the larger Bingo halls periodically try to push for the elimination of our Bingo game. So, the next time you are in the Clubhouse to play Bingo or whatever and you are not a member, or your membership has expired, please pick up an application off the back bulletin board and mail it in. Remember FMO cannot survive without YOU. Thank you for your support. Stuart Berman

RED HAT LUNCHEON Tuesday, August 10th, 1:00 PM, at Magnolia Landing, 3501 Avenida Del Vera, North Fort Myers, 33917. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Also, you can call me, Patty Sparany, at 239-652-3869.

KITCHEN HELP NEEDED The Kitchen Committee is looking for four to six people to join the Committee as Saturday Morning Coffee hosts for the summer, May thru October. Two people always work together to set up, host, and clean up. This is the current procedure: The Coffee is set up the Friday before. At 7:00 AM Saturday morning one person goes to Publix to pick up the donuts, which are pre-ordered by me. The other person arrives at the Clubhouse about 7:15 AM to make sure all is ready to serve the guests around 7:45 AM. Clean-up starts either when the meeting begins or ends. That’s up to you. Polly Brown is our Cashier/Treasurer. She is there every Saturday morning to be the cashier, so the hosts can give the guests their full attention. With two people serving each week, a committee of ten people is ideal and means each person would host only one Saturday each

month. A schedule is prepared for the summer but is flexible if someone has last minute plans. Whether you are new or have lived here for years, this is a great opportunity to greet old friends and get to know your new Tara Woods neighbors, while doing a needed and appreciated service for the community. Some of the current members of the committee enjoy this opportunity so much, they have been serving for a few years. I am only asking for a one-year commitment at this time. If you would like to join us or would like to know more about it, please give us a call. Thank you! Janet & George Daly Chairpersons, Kitchen Committee since 2005 239-567-2285, janetdaly@yahoo.com

You will be given copies of the songs we will sing and hopefully have all your questions answered. Rehearsals will begin the following Monday, October 4th, in the Clubhouse. Unless otherwise agreed upon, all rehearsals are Monday from 12:30 until 2:30PM. There will be no rehearsal

during the month of December. Did you know that singing is good for you? Believe it or not, singing is exercising. It’s a known fact that singing exercises the lungs. And we all know how important our lungs are. So, if you are looking for something different to do on Monday afternoons, consider joining us in the Clubhouse. Who knows, you may find out that you like it? See you then. Stuart Berman

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen... August and September are here and are you ready? Ready for the ideas to pop into your head about what to do for the upcoming season when the parties and meetings begin in earnest. This is the time to plan your parties, check in with the Clubhouse Scheduler to see if your day is still available; time to plan the menu for the meals; time to plan the theme for the party; time to plan the subjects to be discussed at the meetings. As I say this, I am getting the feeling that you, the reader, think that this is what I am doing – planning ahead. If that is the case, you do NOT know me very well. I am still enjoying the lazy days of summer, enjoying the rainy season, sweltering in the humidity – you know – all the things we have gotten used to, all year-round. But, seriously, somebody needs to start thinking about what we will be doing in the fall – how about you? It is up to each one of us to work hard at returning to the “normal” lives in Tara Woods. I do see a light at the end of this tunnel with some things coming back to life. Even a new event, the 4th of

July golf cart parade, I enjoyed seeing everyone put forth the effort to celebrate the 4th whether by decorating your cart or watching the parade go by and then enjoying the great food in the Clubhouse afterward. Also, the horse racing was lots of fun. I am thinking of planning ahead. I will be looking at the stage set for the next play, the one we almost got to see before COVID changed everything. I have been talking to Janet, our director, about the play, and assuming that the actors have been studying their lines, so that by October (which is around the corner) we can begin the rehearsals with no problems. I want to welcome the new players that will be on stage this year for the first time in this play (more on them later). Please enjoy the end of our summer here in SW Florida. “Cinema is a literature of images; Theatre is a literature of ideas.” Peter Glenville Pat Dunning, President of the Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com

NAMES IN TARA WOODS As I biked and walked around Tara Woods over the past year, I noticed the names of the residents on their yard posts and thought I would share my observations in an article for The Columns. (The spelling of the names may be different from the actual words, but the pronunciation of the name is the same.) We have a Bishop and a Nunn, but no Priest. We have a King, but no Queen. We have a Cook, but no Baker. We have a Weaver, but no other craftsmen. Animals: We have a Baer, a Byrd, a Chick, a Coon (Kuhns), and a Fox; and we also have Catz (Katz). Colors: We have Black, Brown, Gold, Green, and White. Objects: We have an Apple, a Barr, a Bell, a Carr, a Dorr, a Hall, a Hill, a Hand, a Key, a Lane, a Skelton, and a Towne. We also have Combs and Gates. Last Names of our Residents that can also be First Names: We have Allen, Aubry, Bartholomew, Benedict (as in Benedict Arnold), Bennett, Benjamin, Bertrand (as in Bertrand Wagner, a former resident), Bradley, Burt, Casey, Charles,

Clark (as in Clark Kent in Superman), Conner, Corey, Courtney, Craig, Curtis, Dickie, Douglas, Erhardt, Ferris (as in Ferris Bueller, a TV Sitcom), Francis, Frederick, Gabriel, Girard, Grant, Guy, Harris, Herald, Howard, Humphrey (as in Humphrey Bogart, the actor), James, Janis, Kelsey (as in Kelsey Grammer from Cheers), Kenney, Lauren, Linn, Mason (as in Mason Crosby, the Green Bay Packers kicker), Murphy, Nelson, Parker, Perry, Quinn, Ray, Reese, Roderick, Roland, Rose, Scott, Sherman, Taylor, Thomas, Toney, Victor, Wade, Wallace, Warner, and Whitney. If these Last Names did not end with an “s”, they would also qualify as First Names: Adams, Andrews, Evans, Ivens, Jacobs, Johns, Jones, Lynes, Peters, Phillips, and Williams. I hope you found this article interesting; I enjoyed putting this list together. There may be other names that qualify for these lists, but this is what I compiled from the 2020-2021 Resident Directory. Submitted by Linda Engel

PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP CAMPAIGN Tara Woods Management has officially launched our Pride of Ownership campaign! Over the months of July, August and September, our staff will be conducting four-sided inspections of each and every home site to make sure that our community is looking its absolute best. There are several items that we look for, including the condition of your yard, flower beds, and the condition of your home, sheds, patios, driveways and steps. (Are they weed free, well maintained, edged and kept up well?) We are always trying to maintain the highest standards for the community. (Refer to community policies and Prospectus where applicable.) Each home that receives a “Kudo’s” note for their excellent home site condition, instead of a reminder notice of items needing attention, will be entered into a prize drawing each month. NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY CLUB Welcome back! The dates for our Club meetings for October 2021 – April 2022 have been emailed to you. If anything changes, I will send them again and make them available on the Club bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Our first meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 9th, at 5:00 PM. At this time, we still need hosts for this meeting. The New York/New Jersey Club will be hosting the Labor Day Party on Monday, September 6th. The sign-up sheet for helpers should be on the Club bulletin board. Please sign up for wherever you can help. This year the food is going to be prepared by a new resident member of the Club, Keith Hand, and his Mom, Sandy Knowles. Keith had a catering business

in Atlanta before retiring to Tara Woods, so he loves to cook and has volunteered to cater this event. Sandy makes fantastic desserts. We will still need helpers from the Club to make this event a success, so please sign up. If you are new to Tara Woods and are from New York or New Jersey, we would love to have you join us. Contact me at my email below to be put on our contact list. The meeting calendar is also available on the Club bulletin board and on the TWHOA website under NY/NJ Club. Just show up for a meeting! We’ll be glad to have you! Janet Daly janetdaly@yahoo.com

Even “singles” need estate plans

If you don’t have a spouse or children, you might think you don’t need to do much estate planning. But if you have any assets, any familial connections, any interest in supporting charitable groups – not to mention a desire to control your own future – you do need to establish an estate plan. In evaluating your needs for this type of planning, let’s start with what might happen if you die intestate – that is, without a last will and testament. In this scenario, your assets will likely have to go through the probate process, which means they’ll be distributed by the court according to your state’s intestate succession laws, essentially without regard to your wishes. Even if you don’t have children yourself, you may have nephews or nieces, or even children of cousins or friends, to whom you would like to leave some of your assets, which can include not just money but also cars, collectibles, family memorabilia and so on. But if everything you own goes through probate, there’s no guarantee that these individuals will end up with what you wanted them to have. If you want to leave something to family members or close friends, you will need to indicate this in your last will and testament or other estate planning documents. But you also may want to provide support to one or more charitable organizations. Of course, you can simply name these charities in your will, but there may be options that could provide you with more benefits. One such possibility is a charitable remainder trust. Under this arrangement, you’d transfer appreciated assets – such as stocks, mutual funds or other securities – into an irrevocable trust. The trustee, whom you’ve named – in fact, you could serve as trustee yourself – can then sell the assets at full market value, avoiding the capital gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold them yourself, outside a trust. Plus, if you itemize, you may be able to claim a charitable deduction on your taxes. With the proceeds, the trust can purchase income-producing assets and provide you with an income stream for the rest of your life. Upon your death, the remaining trust assets will go the charities you’ve named. Aside from family members and charitable groups, there’s a third entity that’s central to your estate plans: yourself. Everyone should make arrangements to protect their interests, but, in the absence of an immediate family, you need to be especially vigilant about your financial and health care decisions. And that’s why, as part of your estate planning, you may want to include these two documents: durable power of attorney and a health care proxy. A durable power of attorney lets you name someone to manage your finances should you become incapacitated. This arrangement is especially important for anyone who doesn’t have a spouse to step in. And if you become incapacitated, your health care proxy – also known as a health care surrogate or medical power of attorney – lets you name another person to legally make health care decisions for you if you can’t do so yourself. Estate planning moves can be complex, so you’ll need help from a legal professional and possibly your tax and financial advisors. You may not have an immediate family, but you still need to take steps to protect your legacy.

GARDEN CLUB It’s difficult to predict what is going to happen in the coming season. As of now, out of an abundance of caution for everyone who lives in Tara Woods, the Craft Fair is cancelled. This was not done lightly; a great deal of discussions were held, but in the end, it was decided it was better to err on the side of caution. The Fashion show usually held in November, has been rescheduled for April 8th, 2022. The Trash and Treasure March 5th, 2022 From paperwork I was given when I was elected president, the Garden Club has been in existence since 1998. Along the way, many of the guidelines have changed, few members are interested in actually gardening, and it has become more of a social club, responsible for three major events of the season: The Craft Fair, The Fashion Show and the Trash and Treasure. Over the years the Garden by the gazebo has become a beautiful Butterfly Garden, with all the plants necessary to help the existence of the butterflies. The Club continues to maintain this garden, which is in keeping with the listed purposes of this Club. Also, in keeping with the purpose of the Club, there is monthly information in The Columns on gardening in Florida. The Clubhouse is reserved for our first meeting on Saturday, October 23rd. Hopefully, we will be able to have this meeting. Anyone interested in joining our Club, please come to this meeting. And if you are new to Tara Woods, it’s a great way to meet and make new friends, and when the world was normal, the dues are only $5.00 a year, which we usually put towards a luncheon, For Members Only. Stay safe. Rachelle DellaRocca 239-322-6386

What to plant August

Bedding Plants: The hottest days of summer limit planting now to heat tolerant coleus, kalanchoe, and vinca. Bulbs: Aztec lily, butterfly lily, walking iris, and spider lily can be planted any time of the year, even late summer. Herbs: Herbs that can be planted from plants (not seeds) include bay laurel, ginger, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Vegetables: Many cool-season crops such as collards and onion can be planted now, including a final crop of warm-season vegetables, such as pepper. Tomato can also be planted for the fall garden.

What to Do August

What to plant September

Bedding Plants: If summer beds need refreshing, try scarlet sage, nasturtium, celosia, and wax begonia for color into fall. Bulbs: Plant gladiolus every 2 weeks to stagger blooming, staking each plant. Add color, texture and pattern to the garden with the many varieties of Elephant’s Ear (Alocasia) available now. Herbs: Plant herbs that tolerate the warm temperatures of early fall, such as Mexican tarragon, mint, rosemary, and basil. Vegetables: Prepare the fall vegetable garden. Using transplants from your local garden center will get the garden off to a fast start, but seeds provide a wider variety from which to choose. Cool-season crops such as broccoli, cabbage, collards, and lettuce can be planted

What to do September

Lawn problems: Continue to monitor the lawn for signs of insect damage. Fall armyworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, and sod webworms are still active this month. Divide perennials and bulbs: Divide and replant perennials and bulbs that have grown too large or need rejuvenation. Add organic matter to planting beds and monitor water needs Fertilize lawns: Fertilize bermudagrass with controlled-release nitrogen (not a weed & feed) this month. Wait until next month to fertilize centipedegrass and bahiagrass lawns. Check irrigation system: Before summer rains taper off, check that irrigation systems are providing good coverage and operating properly. See: How to Calibrate Your Sprinkler System Citrus: Fertilize citrus with a balanced fertilizer either this month or in October. Use controlled-release nitrogen as rain will not leach it from the soil too quickly. See: Citrus Culture in the Home Landscape Shrubs: Consider placing native shrubs like beautyberry, marlberry, firebush, and dahoon holly where you can view the birds that enjoy them. See: FloridaFriendly LandscapingTM Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design Planting Shrubs in Florida Landscapes Excerpts from the University of Florida gardening calendar. Rachelle DellaRocca 239-322-6386

Lawn problems: Damaged areas can be the result of insects, disease, or irrigation problems. Be sure to determine the cause so the proper remedy is used. Use a sharp mower blade and only remove 1/3 of grass blade to reduce stress on the lawn. Palms: If older fronds are yellowing, you may have a magnesium or potassium deficiency. Apply an appropriate palm fertilizer. Nutrient Deficiencies of Landscape and Field-grown Palms in Florida Poinsettias: Pinch back poinsettias and mums before the end of the month to allow time for buds to form for winter bloom. Ornamental Plants: Rapid growth and leaching rains may result in nutrient deficiencies in some plants. Fertilize those plants that show signs of deficiencies. Bedding Plants: Remove spent blooms, cut back, and fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to extend the bloom season into the fall months.

BOOK CLUB Book Club will meet on Friday, August 6th, and Friday, September 3rd, at 1:30 PM at 2760 Steamboat Loop. Please note that this is a change in the day of the week for the get- togethers. Anyone who enjoys reading is encouraged to join us for the discussions of our latest reads. For more information, feel free to contact Marilyn Workman at 239-5431168. We look forward to seeing newcomers.

COMING IN NOVEMBER QUARTER AUCTION WHEN: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH. TIME: DOORS OPEN AT 4:30 PM. AUCTION STARTS AT 5:30 PM. FOOD: TENT WILL BE SET UP IN FRONT OF THE CLUBHOUSE FEATURING THE SQUEEZERS OF CAPE CORAL. RESERVATIONS: CONTACT SHEILA HARRIS AT 313-717-5627 OR JUDY GIRTY AT 513-702-6874 TO RESERVE A TABLE. QUESTIONS: CONTACT JUDY GIRTY. What the heck is a Quarter Auction? Well, it is a raffle-style auction, not a traditional auction. As a quarter auction participant, you’ll want to arrive at doors open time – bring a supply of quarters and your friends! We recommend a couple rolls of quarters. When you arrive, you’ll get your bid paddle. When you rent your paddle(s), a poker chip matching your paddle number(s) will go into a container used to draw winning numbers throughout the event. You will also have an opportunity to visit the individual vendor tables to register for door prizes. The vendors will also have cash and carry items for sale! When the auction begins, each auction item will be presented and “auctioned”, one by one. You will use your quarters and paddles to bid, but no fear! You do not try to out-bid others, but rather bid the requested number of quartersl (typically 2-3) on the item for a chance to win that item! The retail value of the item determines the number of quarters required per paddle to bid. Once you toss the required number of quarters into bowls on the table and they are collected, you raise your paddle in the air. We will begin drawing numbers from the numbered chips matching the paddles. If the announcer calls your number and if you have placed the bid, you win! If the number called wasn’t played, numbers continue to be pulled until a number is called for someone who had bid and had their paddle in the air! Then on to the next auction item. Bid on everything! It’s a great way to potentially squirrel away items in your gift closet for that unexpected hostess, thank you, or birthday gifts. Usually there are two auction rounds with a break between the two rounds – to make sure you’ve registered for the door prizes. The auction rounds are followed by the door prize round.

SPORTS, EXERCISE, and ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES Much has happened since the June/July issue of The Columns. Independence Day, July 4th, was celebrated with a decorated golf cart parade led by a fire truck from our local North Fort Myers fire station. It was a hot, steamy day, but seventeen carts rode around the lakes, greeted by cheerful residents. Three prizes were awarded to the most festive, decorated carts, judged by secret, independent judges. Thank you to all who participated and came out to watch the parade. After the parade, Publix subs were served in the Clubhouse, followed by two horse races with our own wooden horses and enthusiastic jockeys. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this day a success. So many people stepped forward to help plan, decorate, serve and clean up. It wouldn’t have happened without you. Thank you to Bill Black & Friends for hosting Hot Dog Day on July 25th. Hometown America supplied the food and Bill and his crew grilled and served it to the entire community. Another event made possible by the combined efforts of a group of people willing to work together to keep the magic of Tara Woods alive. There will be a Labor Day party on Monday, September 6th, hosted by the New York/New Jersey Club. Look for an article in this issue of The Columns and information on the TWHOA website and on a poster in the Clubhouse. There will also be a Halloween Party, hosted by Cindy McKay and friends, on Saturday, October 30th. Watch for more information on that on the TWHOA website and poster in the Clubhouse. We’re almost back to normal and look forward to celebrating all the holidays together as we always have as a community of friends and neighbors. Tom and Donna Erhardt cannot host Thanksgiving Dinner at the Clubhouse as they have in the past, so if anyone would like to host Thanksgiving this year, please call me or Donna and she will be glad to share what is involved with that event.

Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions regarding the events at this time or in the future. Janet Daly, Activities Coordinator, janetdaly@yahoo.com, 239-567-2285

TAI CHI When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, five of those years as an instructor. He is a full-time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years, where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week. How do I sign up for classes or contact with questions? Contact Barbara Werner-Lubich, Tara Woods resident. Phone: 410-409-5874 Email: barbara.wernerlubich@gmail.com What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind-body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing. Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you. What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress and reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good

and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally. What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing

and relaxation. Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit. Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable. Just want to try out Tai Chi before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

EXERCISE FOR SENIORS CURTIS IS BACK & HE IS LOOKING FOR YOU!! Now is the time to get up and get going again. This is a total body workout that can be done standing or sitting down. It includes stretching, balance, cardio and light weights. Give it a try - nothing to lose and may even gain some muscle. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays in the clubhouse. At 8:00 AM. Any questions, please contact Barb Simonson at 541-840-4430.
