FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Well, it’s that time of year. There is a nip in the air so be sure to check the snow blower, dig out the snow shovels, then get out the long johns and extra heavy sweaters. No, wait! That was another time and place! Here in Tara Woods, we continue to play tennis, pickleball, bocce, and shuffleboard, ride our bikes and drive our golf carts, and enjoy leisurely walks and our heated pools. • We enjoyed a wonderful Halloween Party which demonstrated the creativity of our residents. • Kim Swanson, Crime Prevention Practitioner from the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, was here and provided residents with safety tips for the holiday season. • The Quarter Auction was a huge success, raising over $2,800.00 for The Day of Caring, which supports three charities located right here in our area. Thanks to all who participated! • Our annual toy drive, in conjunction with the North Fort Myers Fire Department, is asking for your help to create a stage full of toys for those less fortunate. • Take time to check out the fresh vegetables and fruits provided by Hernandez Produce in the Clubhouse parking lot each Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. • Residents attending Saturday Morning Coffee were treated to free coffee and donuts while learning, through a short presentation, about the many resources and options available with Medicare. • Residents gathered Saturday, November 27th, to decorate the Clubhouse. It is truly beautiful!
• Check out The Columns, the Clubhouse bulletin board, and your twhoa.net website to see the details on all that December has to offer. We cannot underestimate the contributions of the many residents who serve as volunteers with the goal of making us an even better community. We appreciate you and we thank you! Many studies have shown that communities such as ours that have an active Homeowners Association and a high rate of resident participation are not only better but happier than others. Based on an article in the Washington Post “Research suggests that volunteers aren’t just helping the communities they serve. People who volunteer actually experience a boost in their mental health.” HEADS UP – In order to vote at the January Homeowners Meeting you need to have your 2022 dues paid by December 31st, 2021. Please see Membership Secretary, Ann Millette, or any Board Member for assistance. DID YOU KNOW THAT – December is Bingo Birthday Month. Bingo’s origins are believed to be in Italy, where it is said the game began life as a lottery called ‘Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia’, in 1530. From there you can trace its path roughly as a favorite of the French aristocracy, where it was known as ‘Le Lotto’, before finally arriving on British shores. ANNUAL HOLIDAY COLLECTION It’s once again time to begin collecting donations for our Annual Firefighters & Paramedics Holiday Dinners. These members of our North Fort Myers Fire Department do so much for our Tara Woods Community that it gives us great pleasure to give back to them during the holidays. As we did last year, we will use your donations to provide Gift Certificates from Publix for the three shifts who work December 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, so that they can purchase Holiday dinners for their shifts. We will accept donations at Tuesday Bingo and Saturday Morning Coffee. Or you can call Chuck Poveromo or Frank Millette, and we will be happy to pick up your donation. Make checks payable to “cash”. Please give generously to those who are always there for us in our time of need. Thank you, Chuck Poveromo and Frank Millette
Retirees fear becoming a burden It’s human nature to want to make things easier for our loved ones – and to have great concern about adding any stress to their lives. In fact, 72% of retirees say that one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. How can you address this fear? First, don’t panic. In all the years leading up to your retirement, there’s a lot you can do to help maintain your financial independence and avoid burdening your grown children or other family members. Consider these suggestions: • Increase contributions to your retirement plans and health savings account. The greater your financial resources, the greater your financial independence – and the less likely you would ever burden your family. So, contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA, your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contributions, if offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also want to contribute to a health savings account (HSA), if it’s available. • Invest for growth potential. If you start investing early enough, you’ll have a long time horizon, which means you’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of investments that offer growth potential. So, in all your investment vehicles – IRA, 401(k), HSA and whatever other accounts you may have – try to devote a reasonable percentage of your portfolio to growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based funds. Of course, there are no guarantees and you will undoubtedly see market fluctuations and downturns, but you can help reduce the impact of volatility by holding a diversified portfolio for the long term and periodically rebalancing it to help ensure it is aligned with your risk tolerance and time horizon. Keep in mind, though, that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market. • Protect yourself from long-term care costs. Even if you invest diligently for decades, your accumulated wealth could be jeopardized, and you could even become somewhat dependent on your family, if you ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health care aide. The likelihood of your needing such assistance is not insignificant, and the care can be quite expensive. In fact, the median cost for home health services is nearly $55,000 per year, while a private room in a nursing home can exceed $100,000, according to Genworth, an insurance company. To help protect yourself against these steep and rising costs, you may want to contact a financial professional, who can suggest an appropriate strategy, possibly involving various insurance options. • Create your estate plans. If you were ever to become incapacitated, you could end up imposing various burdens on your family. To guard against this possibility, you’ll want to ensure your estate plans contain key documents, such as a financial power of attorney and a health care directive. It’s safe to say that no one ever wants to become a financial burden to their family. But putting appropriate strategies in place can go a long way toward helping avoid this outcome.

The below information was received from the FMO Offices for distribution. When complaints are submitted by the residents of manufactured homes to DBPR, those items are reviewed. If the review is considered a possible violation, an investigator will be assigned to investigate the complaint(s). The park owner is notified and asked to correct the item(s). If the park owner fails to act to the satisfaction of the investigator, a fine of $250.00 is issued to the park owner. That amount goes to DBPR. FMO is asking the Legislature to increase that fine to $2,500.00 for each confirmed violation listed on the complaint. Subsequent confirmed violations against the same park owner within three (3) years will receive a fine of $5,000.00 per violation. FMO feels that these changes will motivate DBPR to be more aggressive in handing out penalties for continuing violations. We also hope that these increased amounts will add awareness to violations by park owners while encouraging
residents to file multiple lists of complaints. Language is being drafted by Nancy Stewart. Once drafted, Nancy will pursue a House Sponsor and a Senate Sponsor to submit our proposed Legislation. Once that is completed, our package will go through Legislative Drafting and assigned Bill numbers. The Bills must then be heard and approved by three (3) Committees in EACH Legislative body (a total of 6 Committees) before going to the floor for a vote. If the Bill fails in just one Committee, the Bill is dead. You will be called on to help support this important Legislation and the continuation of our “Tie-Down” Legislation to be filed as a separate Bill. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Now more than your voice and membership need to be heard and seen. Wishing you and your family a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season. May 2022 bring us all the best. ~ Stuart Berman

NEW IMAGE CHORUS The only requirement to join the New Image Chorus is that you want the opportunity to meet your fellow chorus members and have some fun. You don’t have to be able to read notes and there are NO TRYOUTS. Just show up to a rehearsal. Rehearsals are Mondays from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM with a break about halfway through. You will have the songs we are going to be singing in front of you. Attendance is not taken. In the last two months, this writer has missed three practices. CHRISTMAS GOLF CART PARADE Wednesday, December 8th.
5:00 PM – Line up in the Clubhouse parking lot (North) Christmas Cheer to share! 6:00 PM – Parade begins – Route posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse.
IMPORTANT – Due to the length of the parade going down every street, you are asked to not hand out food or drink to the golf cart participants along the route. This will eliminate any stopping, which causes delays and separation of the parade. I suggest you bring your goodies up to the social hour before the parade at 5:00 PM. Decorate your golf cart, bicycle or motorcycle and join the fun. Don’t forget to charge your golf cart. It’s no fun pushing it around the parade route. We need parade watchers to cheer us on, so come out in your driveway so Santa can wish you a Merry Christmas! Janet Daly, Activities Coordinator 239-567-2285

The Quarter Auction
The Quarter Auction for the benefit of The Day of Caring charity was a huge success. Thank you to all who participated. The Day of Caring Report As of November 8th, The Day of Caring envelope donations are $2,049.00. I am writing this on the Eve of the Quarter Auction. We hope the Quarter Auction adds to that. We are almost at capacity for seating at the Quarter Auction. Sue has done a fantastic job collecting donations. She has over twenty wonderful baskets and many Gift Certificates for Auction. We have many people to thank for the donations. 1. Where does the money go?
2. Catholic Charities uses it to give gift certificates for purchasing turkey or chicken at grocery stores for Thanksgiving dinners for the families. 3. The Fort Myers Rescue Mission houses and helps rehabilitate ninety homeless men. They also feed hundreds each day. Their donations go towards the meals. 4. Wake Up America uses the donations only for the care and maintenance of the vehicles they use every morning, except on Easter and Christmas, when they are used to collect perfectly good food that would otherwise be tossed, and distributes the food to numerous food banks in our area. All your donations are used very wisely.
Thanks to Judy Girty, Sheila Harris, and Sue Cook, for all their work to make this Quarter Auction happen. If you have not yet donated with the envelope drive and would still like to, we continue accepting donations till the first week of December. You can write checks to The Day of Caring or give cash. We would like to give checks to all three charities for Christmas too. We combine the donations from Pine Lake and Lake Fairways too. I will give you final totals in December. Thanks so much for all your generosity. Chris Olson Chairperson for The Day of Caring in Tara Woods.

DECEMBER 2021 Island Visitor Publishing BE SURE TO CHECK THE TENNIS BULLETIN BOARD ON A REGLAR BASIS FOR UPDATED INFORMATION ON WHAT IS GOING ON WITH TENNIS ACTIVITIES.
TENNIS ASSOCIATION
TENNIS LEAGUES
Our first meeting of the Tennis Association was held on Saturday, November 27th, at 10:30 AM. We met at the tennis courts right after our social tennis. Because this issue of The Columns was written before our meeting took place, we don’t have any meeting results to report on at this time. ~ Ed Sandre and Greg Girard
Men’s League: White Team The Men’s White Team season started with a home game on Tuesday, November 9th. The team will be playing every Tuesday at 1:30 PM. The full schedule is on the Tennis Bulletin Board; check that schedule to see if we are playing at home or away, as half of our matches will be played at other communities. Since there has been no play with other communities for a year, we do not know what has changed in each community. We are all a year older, so we will have to see how well we match up to each team. Come out and cheer us on; we may need the support. ~ Fred Puhlfuerst
COURT MAINTENANCE If you see some improvements on the tennis courts, you can thank our Tennis Association Vice-President and Maintenance Man, Greg Girard. OPEN TENNIS The mixed doubles “Open Tennis” is played every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. The snowbirds are finally returning to Tara Woods, so there should be more tennis players showing up to play. All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts and there is no need to sign up to play on those “Open Tennis” days. If you have an interest in playing tennis, stop by the courts and check us out.

Blue Team As was mentioned in the November issue of The Columns, there is no Men’s Blue Team from Tara Woods this season, so there will be no future articles. Women’s League The Women’s Team (the Angels) could not field enough players this season so there will not be any more articles to submit for The Columns.
TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) (This article was written the first week in November so things may have changed before you read this article the first week in December.) We are getting ready to start TWIT mid-November. I realize some of you may not yet be back in Tara Woods, so let someone know that you would like to play and we will sign you up. We were still thinking about playing on Thursdays, since there is no women’s team using the courts. We could even start earlier, at 9:00 AM, or start at the old time at 10:30 AM. Tuesday may also be open. We have a few things to discuss before we start, so I will try to get everyone together to get a consensus on a few items. ~ Mike Renzulli ROUND ROBINS We tentatively are looking to have our first Round Robin on Sunday, December 19th. We hope that the newer tennis players in Tara Woods – and all of our current tennis players – will sign up and enjoy the fun of our Round Robins. Please check the bulletin board at the tennis courts for a sign-up sheet and put your name on the sheet to play in our first Round Robin of the season. ~ Greg Girard Submitted by Linda Engel

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen... December is a great month weather wise in SW Florida. It gets chilly at times, but there is no snow. Although I do think that, in the north, there is nothing better than sitting at a window drinking a cup of hot tea and watching the world turn white outside. Wow, what a great memory. Now on to Entertaining News – We are in rehearsals. Almost all of our cast have returned and are learning their lines. We will be taking a Christmas break from December 23rd, until January 3rd, (rehearsal that day); but cast, please keep studying and memorizing your lines because the month of January brings to us – not a gift, well a kind of gift – we will be off book. Yes, starting January, rehearsals will be without books and we will start using our props. In December we will be having an Entertainers
meeting also; it will be on Saturday, December 18th, following Saturday Morning Coffee in the little Meeting Room in the Clubhouse. To all residents, if you are curious about the Entertainers, come on out and visit us, either at this meeting or at one of our rehearsals. Hope to see all Entertainers at the meeting. Otherwise, I hope you all have a great Christmas and Holiday season and have a Happy Healthy New Year.
SHUFFLEBOARD If anyone is interested in playing Horse Collar on Mondays at 10:00 AM, the cost is $1.00 per player (to be given away as prizes). Anyone can play. The Tuesday and Friday leagues began in January 2021. Call Ken Atkinson at 815-970-0467 if you have any questions.

December What to plant Bedding Plants: To add color to the winter garden, plant masses of begonia, impatiens, and geranium. Bulbs: Amaryllis is a popular plant for the holiday season. They can be forced to bloom now or planted outdoors for spring blooms. Herbs: Plant herbs that thrive in cool weather. Some to try are parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, and cilantro. Vegetables: Reliable cool season vegetables to plant this month include celery, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, and carrot.
December What to do Poinsettias: One of the most popular holiday plants is poinsettia. Enjoy it indoors now; then plant in the garden to re-bloom next year. Irrigation: Plants may need irrigation if the weather has been warm and dry. Monitor for signs of stress and water only as needed. Fungal disease: Continue monitoring for brown patch and large patch fungal disease through May. Cultural practices are key in control. Houseplants: Inspect regularly for pests on indoor plants. Keep in mind that plant specific temperature, light, and humidity are key to ensuring that indoor plants thrive. Soil Test: If plants did not perform as desired this year or new plantings are being planned, a soil test may be a good idea. Compost: Composting is environmentally friendly and produces a beneficial soil amendment or mulch. Plant debris provides the carbon ingredient needed for successful composting. Pests: While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of year. Continue monitoring and treat as needed. Holiday Trees: Consider enjoying a live southern red cedar and then plant it in the landscape when the holidays are over. Protect: Falling temperatures may require protection of tender orchids, impatiens, and tomatoes Excerpts from the Florida Gardening Calendar University of Florida.

SHILOH SPEAKS It’s December 2021, the last month of the year, and I’m not a news commentator to bring up what has happened in the past eleven months. All I know is that in twenty-five days, it’ll be Christmas. Have you done your holiday shopping yet? I hope everyone had a safe year, which gave you a smile or a laugh, and a willingness to share with others on the upcoming New Year. Also, how we have to address Christmas in a different way. Such as, “Season’s Greetings”, “Happy Holidays”, “Wishing you good health and cheer”, or just getting it across that the traditional “Merry Christmas” is still the twenty-fifth of December or if you’re of another nationality. As for myself, I play it safe by wagging my tail or putting my paw out by giving a handshake, even though in today’s world we’re still very cautious on our traditional handshake and giving a fist bump. Still, I’m trying to learn how to do a fist bump. So, I’ll give you a tail bump. Or I’ll just roll over on my back and get a belly rub. Hmmm? Even though kisses are seldom, is mistletoe going to be a special order from Amazon? I’m still able to sneak out a wet one now and then or get an old-fashioned pat on the
head. We all have our way to express our joy during this holiday season, in some way, faith and form. In this segment of “Shiloh Speaks”, I give you a Doggie version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Hopefully, you know the traditional version, but just a tweet by putting dog verses in place of it. Here goes…
Lighthouse Mobile Home Sales.Com “Guiding You Home” On the first day of Christmas My true love gave to me A POMERANIAN Under a pear tree
On the seventh day of Christmas Seven PORTUGUESE WATER SPANIELS a-swimming
On the second day of Christmas My true love gave to me, Two COCKER SPANIELS
On the eight day of Christmas Eight GERMAN SHEPHERDS a-guarding
On the third day of Christmas Three FRENCH BULLS
On the ninth day of Christmas Nine POODLES a-prancing
Tara Woods residents list your home with DeeAnn Blanton from Lighthouse sales, your local sales agent. * DeeAnn is a trusted sales agent that is dedicated to selling your home quickly, professionally and for the top price.
On the tenth day of Christmas Ten COLLIES a-herding
* DeeAnn will list your home in multiple listing outlets to get you the maximum exposure.
On the fifth day of Christmas Five GOLDEN RETRIEVERS
On the eleventh day of Christmas Eleven SHIHT ZUS, PLUS 1 CAT are a-whining (Hey, how did a cat get into this?)
* DeeAnn has low listing fees and will take care of the paperwork to make the sale less stressful for you.
On the sixth day of Christmas Six WESTIES a-digging
And on the twelfth day of Christmas Twelve DACHSHUNDS waiting to be walked.
On the fourth day of Christmas Four BASSETT HOUNDS a-howling
Well, my time is up for “Shiloh Speaks”. From me to my fellow readers, “Happy Holidays”, “Season’s Greetings”, and of course “MERRY CHRISTMAS”

TAI CHI IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning Tuesday, October 5th, Tai Chi classes meet the same days, Tuesday and Thursday, but at a new time 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. The time change is necessary to accommodate The Entertainers group. Tai Chi classes continue and are going strong in Tara Woods. A dedicated group of residents continued practice through the summer, under the patient and supportive guidance of our incredible instructor, Tony Fettig. Tai Chi students have progressed through the first twenty-four movements of the 108 movement set. As we head into full “season”, we look forward to welcoming back our snowbirds who began classes with us in April, as well as any newbies who would like to begin Tai Chi. Tony will help you get caught up with the rest of the class. Not familiar with Tai Chi? Here’s some info so you can decide if Tai Chi is right for you. When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, six of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week. How do I sign up for classes? Who do I contact with questions? We ask that you sign up for classes. Contact Barbara Werner-Lubich, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 410-409-5874, Email: barbara.wernerlubich@gmail.com OR Deb Nespolo, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 401-309-1136, Email: debra.nespolo@gmail.com. What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing.
Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you. What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally. What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation. Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit. Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable. Just want to try outTai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB Welcome Back! The Tara Woods Computer Club suspended its meetings with the start of the COVID restrictions in March 2020 but will resume on the first Thursday of December (December 2nd). Free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods will be held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month will be devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer but may have to be shortened to finish by the end of the season. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask
me almost anything you want. We will spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered will always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. You can attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I have continued to provide my normal services in the park. I give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. The arrangement is fairly flexible since Cribbage can be played by 2 or 3 or 4 players. Just be there by 2 PM. Cards, cribbage boards and fun will be provided. Contact Ann Millette 239-543-2954
POKER, ANYONE? LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.
Ceramics is held in the Ceramics Room by the Tennis Courts. We are there every Monday at 12:00 Noon. For more information and for firing of the kiln please contact Maury Miller, 239-365-9859. We hope you will come and participate in making ceramics with us. Come join the fun.
