TARA WOODS RESIDENTS HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS My name is Vicki Hoard, and I am trying to coordinate a group of residents who would like to assist me with something weighing heavy on my mind. All of our residents who are shut-ins deserve to have a meal for the holidays. Since I would just be starting this program, I would like to get a group of five to eight people who would like to help me figure out a way to serve these individuals. The criteria should classify what we mean by shut-ins (physical, emotional, age, or mental disabilities). Do they have transportation, family who visit, etc., too numerous to figure out currently. Do they want to have dinner for
the holidays? After we figure out the criteria, we would then have to figure out how to serve these individuals, who have lived their lives and are now not able to do for themselves. Whether someone adopts an individual, or we do it in an assembly line, is really to be determined until we know who we need to serve. I would need volunteers for the actual dinner delivery, but right now I need minds willing to help me establish some guidelines. If this sounds like something you would like to do, please call me at 330-697-4630. ~ Vicki Hoard

2022 HONOREE OF TARA WOODS The Appreciation Week Committee is proud to announce that the 2022 Honoree of Tara Woods is Carol Shields, a woman whose career took her all over the world. Carol was born in Flushing, New York, and was the oldest of six girls. (Imagine raising a half dozen girls!!!) She reports her early life was uneventful (I doubt that, living with five sisters), graduating from Warwick Valley High School, and then attending Salem College in West Virginia, Savannah School of Design in Georgia and graduating from Hunter College in NYC. Carol has always had a love of design and was fortunate to work for a textile and design company for twenty-seven years. She became the manager of the company’s Export Department, focusing on the overseas products. This promotion enabled her to spend large quantities of time in Australia (both Sydney and Melbourne), Frankfort, Germany, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Denmark and Sweden. Indeed, this was a wonderful career! On 9-11-2001 life in New York City changed, as well as the world, and Carol’s job changed. As a result, the company offered her an early retirement. In 1987 her parents had relocated to Tara Woods, and had purchased their home, on the corner of Steamboat Loop and Tara Lakes Circle, directly across from the Clubhouse. When not traveling, Carol frequently visited them at Tara Woods and fell in love with this community. In 2003, Carol purchased the home next door to her parents and thus it became known as Shields corner, even to this day. Carol continued her love of fabrics and worked for five years at Joann’s Fabric store at Merchants Crossing, until her parents got sick. At that time, she fully retired and cared for her parents, who died six months within one another in 2007. Long-time residents speak highly of this couple and their home is still owned by their daughters. Carol was coaxed into joining the Entertainers and she said, “I will help out but not be on stage”. Being a very generous woman, she offered to play the part of a snowbird during practices
“She
until the snowbird returned. Guess what, the snowbird never returned, thus putting Carol on stage! Since 2007, she has been a vital part of the Entertainers. Carol, being a talented lady, loves to sing and is also in Chorus, and is their secretary. Carol has also been an active member of the Garden Club, and is also an officer in this club, being their treasurer. Recently, she was the Chairperson of the successful Tara Woods Craft Fair, which is always one of the highlights of the season. Every Tuesday you will see her selling the nine packs at Bingo. Although Carol has traveled all over the world, living in Tara Woods has been a great joy in her life, she reports, and she dearly loves this Community. That is obvious from all the time and energy she invests in our Tara. In reality, we are the blessed ones to have such a generous, caring, reticent woman living here. Congratulations, Carol, on being chosen the Honoree! You deserve it. ~ Mary Nothnagel
Was Only Marginally Modest” OR HAVE YOU NO SHAME

made up of six communities. However, the new year will mean more challenges for all the teams, as more players from each team will return for the full winter season. By the time this article is in your hands we will be at the middle of our competitive season. Since we play both home and away matches, February 15th will be the next home game, followed by March 1st and March 8th. The last home game, which is also the last match for the season, will be March 29th. Our playing schedule is on the Tennis Bulletin Board; you can check it out for all the games and the win/loss results each week. – Fred Puhlfuerst Blue Team: The Mustangs season opening match scheduled for January 6th was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. The match will be rescheduled for another time. Our team was looking forward to playing in front of our home fans for the first time in over a year. We continue to practice and are getting ready to play our match against the Pine Lakes Aging Bulls on January 13th on our home court. As of this writing, we just finished that first match against Pine Lakes and we won all six sets – so, we are off to a good start. Our schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board at the courts; cancellations and make-up games will also be posted for residents’ convenience.
We are anxious to see how we will fare against the other teams in the Blue League. We invite all Tara Woods residents to come out and cheer us on. All home matches are played on Thursdays and begin at 1:30 PM. Come on out and watch some good, competitive tennis. – Roger Rafferty TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) New resident tennis players: There is plenty of time to join our in-house TWIT League. TWIT is an internal tennis league for both men and women that allows players to move up or down their current positions, depending on their weekly points. The idea is that the top player on each court can advance up to the next level, and the player with the least points on each court will move down to the next level. We play on Thursdays at 9:00 AM and our level of play is considered mild competition. – Mike Renzulli ROUND ROBINS: Just a reminder: Our third Round Robin will be on Saturday, February 26th, at 9:00 AM. Snacks and drinks will be served during and after the tennis playing. Please check the Tennis Bulletin Board for a sign-up sheet and put your name on the sheet to play in our next Round Robin of the season. – Greg Girard ~ Submitted by Linda Engel
Watch for changes in RMDs If you’re a certain age, you’ll need to withdraw money from some of your retirement accounts each year. But in 2022, the amount you must take out may be changing more than in other years – and that could affect your retirement income strategy. Here’s some background: Once you turn 72, you generally must start taking withdrawals, called required minimum distributions, or RMDs, from some of your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. Each year, your RMDs are determined by your age and account balances. This year, the life expectancy tables used by the IRS are being updated to reflect longer lifespans. This may result in lower annual RMDs than you’d have to take if this adjustment hadn’t been made. If you’ve started taking RMDs, what does this change mean to you? It can be a positive development, for a few reasons: • Potentially lower taxes – Your RMDs are generally taxable at your personal income tax rate, so the lower your RMDs, the lower your tax bill might be. • Possibly longer “lifespan” for retirement accounts – Because your RMDs will be lower, the accounts from which they’re issued – including your traditional IRA and 401(k) – may be able to last longer without becoming depleted. The longer these accounts can stay intact and remain an asset, the better for you. • More flexibility in planning for retirement income – The word “required” in the phrase “required minimum distributions” means exactly what it sounds like – you must take at least that amount. If you withdraw less than your RMD, the amount not withdrawn will be taxed at 50%. So, in one sense, your RMDs take away some of your freedom in managing your retirement income. But now, with the lower RMDs in place, you may regain some of this flexibility. (And keep in mind that you’re always free to withdraw more than the RMDs.) Of course, if you don’t really need all the money from RMDs, even the lower amount may be an issue for you – as mentioned above, RMDs are generally taxable. However, if you’re 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 per year from a traditional IRA directly to a qualified charitable organization, and some, or perhaps all, of this money may come from your RMDs. By making this move, you can exclude the RMDs from your taxable income. Before taking this action, though, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor. Here are a couple of final points to keep in mind. First, not all your retirement accounts are subject to RMDs – you can generally keep your Roth IRA intact for as long as you want. However, your Roth 401(k) is generally subject to RMDs. If you’re still working past 72, though, you may be able to avoid taking RMDs from your current employer’s 401(k) or similar plan, though you’ll still have to take them from your traditional IRA. Changes to the RMD rules don’t happen too often. By being aware of how these new, lower RMDs can benefit you, and becoming familiar with all aspects of RMDs, you may be able to strengthen your overall retirement income situation.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen... February finds the Entertainers in serious rehearsing mode. Next month our production of “She Was Only Marginally Modest” goes before the community. On Friday, March 11th, and on Saturday, March 12th, the play starts at 7:00 PM. On Sunday, March 13th, the play starts at 2:00 PM. For each performance, the doors open one-half hour before. We offer theatre and cabaret seating, but neither food nor drink are allowed in the Clubhouse for our productions. Tickets, which are a donation of $8.00 per person, go on sale beginning February 5th, at Saturday Morning Coffee, and before Bingo on Tuesday night, as well as one-half hour before each performance when the doors open to the community. Please be sure to attend at least one or more of these productions; our actors and supporting crews have spent many hours creating an entertaining performance for your enjoyment. This is a funny story of a dastardly villain, a manly hero and a ‘marginally modest’ heroine living in a community of strange and wonderful characters all who are guarded by a ‘dead moose’. Sound intriguing? Be sure to find out who gets to get married, who returns to the hog farm, who searches for a man to marry, who gets
to help Ma, who gets to clean up the forest and who gets to flit about the forest. Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces and hearing your laughter and applause in the audience.

MIDWEST CLUB
Well, another month has passed, and a new month has begun. February is the shortest month on our 12-month calendar. This year we only have 28 days, so no leap year. If you were born February 29th, you’re in luck. You’re only three years young. As we all know, February 2nd is Groundhog Day. Good old Punxsutawney Phil makes his debut. If he sees his shadow – he returns to his hole for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, spring is just around the corner. As of last year, we couldn’t decide what he was thinking due to COVID-19. “Oh Well!” February is American Heart Month, that brings us to a special date for young and old – February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Even though chocolate is very toxic to us, still on this segment of “Shiloh Speaks”, I give you some of my Valentine sayings and puns for all of your pet’s view on this special day. “Happy Valentine’s Day” Pugs of kisses and Poodles of love, You’re the best pet parent in the world fur real. No bones about it!! You are bone-Ifiedpawstatic, So I’m unleashing my total self for you. If I give you my licks as my special kisses I Shih Tisa not. A round of paws for being the best pet parent a pet could ever ask for. So, Doggonit, will you paw-lease be my Valentine? Well, my time is up for “Shiloh Speaks” for this month. Be sure to pick up after us – This is your Tara Woods. Keep it clean!! Happy Tails Shiloh

The Midwest Club members who attended the New Year’s Eve party would like to give a special thank you to the Mid-Atlantic Club for hosting such a fantastic New Year’s Eve party. A fun time was had by all, and the roaring 1920s theme was a real crowd pleaser. Our next Midwest Club meeting will be Friday, February 11th, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. We will be hosting a baked potato bar with all the fixings (sour cream, cheese, butter etc.). Please start checking the bulletin board towards the end of January for details on the specific menu, price, ticket sales, and sign-up sheets. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our new and previous members. ~ Vicki Hoard

TAI CHI IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning Tuesday, October 5th, Tai Chi classes meet the same days, Tuesday and Thursday, but at a new time 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. The time change is necessary to accommodate The Entertainers group. Tai Chi classes continue and are going strong in Tara Woods. A dedicated group of residents continued practice through the summer, under the patient and supportive guidance of our incredible instructor, Tony Fettig. Tai Chi students have progressed through the first twenty-four movements of the 108 movement set. As we head into full “season”, we look forward to welcoming back our snowbirds who began classes with us in April, as well as any newbies who would like to begin Tai Chi. Tony will help you get caught up with the rest of the class. Not familiar with Tai Chi? Here’s some info so you can decide if Tai Chi is right for you. When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, six of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week. How do I sign up for classes? Who do I contact with questions? We ask that you sign up for classes. Contact Barbara Werner-Lubich, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 410-409-5874, Email: barbara.wernerlubich@gmail.com OR Deb Nespolo, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 401-309-1136, Email: debra.nespolo@gmail.com. What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing. Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you. What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally. What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin.
First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation. Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit. Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable. Just want to try outTai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

REFLECTIONS ON THE NEW YEAR FROM A SENIOR CITIZEN THE MAYONNAISE JAR AND THE 2 CUPS OF COFFEE When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full… they agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes’. The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things – your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions – and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, and your car and possessions. The sand is everything else – the small stuff. ‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your relatives and friends. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18 holes of golf, or a game of pickleball or walk outside enjoying nature. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’
TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club has resumed free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer but may have to be shortened to finish by the end of the season. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. The first topic we discussed was Windows 11, and additional topics will be determined as we go along. We will spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered will always be posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. You can attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing,
programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

The arrangement is fairly flexible since Cribbage can be played by 2 or 3 or 4 players. Just be there by 2 PM. Cards, cribbage boards and fun will be provided. Contact Ann Millette 239-543-2954
POKER, ANYONE? LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.
