FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou What a wonderful Christmas time and Holiday Season we had in Tara Woods. You could feel the magic in the air. Thank you to all the residents who came together to decorate our Clubhouse. It was beautiful. The Activities Committee did a stellar job decorating the exterior of the Clubhouse and Tara Boulevard. Red and white poinsettias provided by Community Manager, Helen, provided a welcoming theme for our Community. The New England Club hosted a marvelous Christmas Party for all residents. Dancing, fellowship, and friendliness filled the Clubhouse. The lighted Christmas trees on the lakes added to the season. Thank you to all the volunteers who made it possible for us to enjoy this holiday season. Now we look forward to 2024! Your Homeowners

By Lou Dunning, President, 239-240-5847, loudunning2@gmail.com

Association is made up of over thirty-five different committees, whose members volunteer their time and talents to work together to make our Community even better. If you are already one of the nearly 200 volunteers, we ALL thank you! With a new year comes a new start. If you are interested in one or more of the committees, or have an idea for another committee, contact any Board member for more information. It has been said before but it’s true: “It takes a village!” HEADS UP – By the time of this publication all members should have received the annual HOA mailing, including candidates’ information, proxy information, 2024 proposed budget, and an absentee ballot to use if you are unable to attend the annual

HOA voting meeting on Monday, January 8th, 2024, at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. I encourage you to come in person if possible and vote for the leaders who will lead your Homeowners Association. With membership comes responsibility. There are four volunteer Board positions up for your consideration and vote. Also, take time to consider the proposed 2024 budget. There is also a proposed By-law change. Please read the entire proposal in detail and decide what you feel is best for your Homeowners Association. All of us on the Tara Woods Board wish you and your families good health and a Happy New Year.

RED HAT LADIES Come join us on Tuesday, January 2nd, at 1:00 PM at the Asia Buffet, 1706 S. Del Prado Blvd. (across from Walmart). The sign-up sheet is on the board in the Clubhouse. We have lunch,

cocktails, fun, and a social. Hope to see some new faces. If you have any questions, please call Sharon Boehlke at 239-233-7327, or Bea Sponseller at 330-904-7498.

THE DAY OF CARING REPORT The Day of Caring is doing outstanding. Judy Delonge (from Pine Lakes) and I presented checks for $4,000,00 each to the Fort Myers Rescue Mission and the Elizabeth Kay Galeana Center for Catholic Charities on November 21st. On Monday, November 27th, six volunteers from Tara Woods spent a few hours at Holiday4Heroes, and helped pack seventyfive comfort boxes to be sent overseas to active military personnel. They were Judy Girty, Donna Frieman, Diane Breniser, Lorraine Quinn, Celia Blotkamp, and me. Before packing the boxes, I presented a $4,000.00 check and a $550.00 check to them. The Vietnam Veterans of America specified they wanted Vets helping other Vets. While talking and visiting with all three charities, it just reaffirmed to me that our donations go to needy families to help make their Christmas and other December Holidays much happier.

Our new total of donations from Tara Woods on December 11th is an outstanding $9,408.00! The very successful Quarter Auction amounted to $5,188.00; the remaining $4,220.00 was from the envelope donations. We collect until midDecember, so I will give the final report on all three parks next month. After posting the short story and pictures of the packing party for Holiday4Heroes that the six of us from Tara Woods participated in, I have received requests from other people wanting to help. I have let Holiday4Heroes know that we, at Tara Woods, are willing to help. Let me know if you would like to be added to the growing list of volunteers to help either bag items or pack items to be sent to active-duty service personnel. It is a blessing being in such a giving community. ~ Thank you, Chris Olson 715-851-4681 applewood350@gmail.com

On Saturday, January 27th, the New England Club will be hosting a Mardi Gras Party for Tara Woods. So, get out your beads, your masks, your feather boas, your fleur-de-lis; bling yourself out with sequins – anything goes because it’s Mardi Gras! The party starts at 6:00 PM, with music from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The music is being provided by our very excellent DJ, John’s Mobile Music. Tickets are $6.00 per person, and tickets sales start on Saturday, December 30th, at 8:00 AM at Saturday Morning Coffee, and at Tuesday Bingo

at 5:30 PM, until Tuesday, January 23rd, (unless they sell out). There will be table reservation sheets under the poster at the Clubhouse, for 10-14 people. The tables will be covered with green and purple tablecloths, but beyond that, please come up and decorate your tables any time after 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 27th. Raffle tickets will be available; please BYOB and snacks for your table. ~ Judy Machnicz

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen… HAPPY NEW YEAR! January has arrived and we are ready for it! The Entertainers are getting closer to putting our show on stage, especially with March just around the corner. We will be building the set next month, and before you know it, we will be entertaining those who are sitting in the audience laughing and applauding our actors on stage. Those of us who work off/backstage hear the applause and enjoy it also. Be sure to mark your calendars for the second weekend in March. The doors open at 6:30 PM for the 7:00 PM show on Friday the 8th, and Saturday the 9th. In addition, the doors open at 1:30 PM for the 2:00 PM show on Sunday the 10th. This additional show on Sunday for a Matinee will give those who do not want to drive at night, and those who work on Friday and Saturday, a chance to see our show. And what the heck, we put so much time and effort into our shows, it

just seems right to keep the show going. There are three important parts of a stage play: good material to work with, and wonderful actors and crew to put the play on stage, and an enthusiastic audience to perform for. We have done our part – now is the opportunity for you, Tara Woods, to provide the third and final piece of this puzzle. Our tickets will be going on sale in the early part of February, so look for more information next month. As usual, they will be sold at Saturday Morning Coffee and before Bingo on Tuesday night. There will be more information on this later. “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill Pat Dunning, Stage Manager Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com

TENNIS NEWS Submitted by Linda Engel TENNIS ASSOCIATION The tennis season is well under way and it’s great to see everyone enjoying the Open Tennis, which has been well attended. There are a lot of new faces out there, so hopefully we’re all doing our part in welcoming all the new participants. I would like to mention that the Tennis Association is looking for people who would like to serve on our Tennis Association Board, as all four positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) will become vacant after the January Round Robin. Anyone interested in a position on the Board can talk to me, or you can let us know at the Round Robin where we can vote new Board members into the positions. At this time, we are also collecting the $5.00 annual dues for 2024. ~ Ed Sandre OPEN TENNIS There have been a lot of people taking advantage of the “Open Tennis” which is played every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. On some days, all four courts are full, with extra players waiting their turn to hit the ball. Incidentally, when we had a very cold day in early December, we had only 6 or 7 people show up to play – but that’s all we needed to enjoy the game of tennis. Feel free to join us on the tennis courts on any of the Open Tennis days. We welcome all skill levels. We are out there to have fun.

If you have an interest in tennis, stop by and see what is happening on the tennis courts. TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League: White Team – Stallions We have had a slow start to our season to date but are looking forward to improved results moving forward. The Christmas break could be just what we needed, and we look forward to competing in the matches. As always, we appreciate everyone who comes out to cheer on our teams. The schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board; the White Team games are played on Tuesdays at 1:30 PM. With two White Teams from Tara Woods, there is always one of the teams playing “home” on that day. ~ Ed Sandre White Team – Mustangs The Mustangs have played three matches as of December 8th, losing 2-4 to the Admiralty Admirals, tying Six Lakes 3-3, and losing to Herons Glen 1-5. Our record now is 6 wins - 12 losses. Three of our rostered players will not arrive until after the holidays; we are looking forward to seeing them. We had two matches left before the Christmas and New Year’s Day break. We will begin again on January 9th against our other White League team from Tara Woods, the Stallions – always a spirited match. We look forward to starting the new year on our home courts in front of our supporters. See you there. ~ Roger Rafferty

Blue Team – Tigers Nothing to report this month. Women’s League: Women’s Team – Angels With only 4 players returning from last year’s team, the Tara Woods Angels are in a rebuilding year. As of this article, the team has a record of 9 wins and 9 losses, for a 50% win rate. With all of our players here now, and with Dick Heffron helping to coach the team again this year, we expect to see an improvement in our win rate as we go through the season. A reminder that all of our home games are played on Thursdays at 9:30 AM. Our full schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. The current standings are also posted there. Hope to see everyone at the courts. ~ Mary Sandre ROUND ROBINS Please join us for our next Round Robin tennis event on Saturday, January 27th! It’s a fun morning of tennis for all levels of play, followed by lunch on the verandah. There will be a cut-off date of Monday, January 22nd, for signing up for the lunch, so be sure to sign up early so you don’t miss out on the grilled burgers and hot dogs. There is no cut-off date for signing up for just playing tennis that day. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board in early January, or you can contact me at 239-8889135. ~ Greg Girard

TWHOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS CANDIDATES FOR 2024

SUE COOK After much thought, I am submitting my biography for the upcoming election of the Tara Woods Homeowners Board of Directors. I moved to Lee County forty-five years ago and have owned a home in Tara Woods for nine years, so I know the ins-and-outs of what it is like to not only own but also be a good neighbor. Education and Job History: I have an Associate Degree in Nursing, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. My career background has been over forty years in Nursing, thirty of those as Director of an in-patient Psychiatric/Detoxification Unit.

I have previously served on the Tara Woods Board as a Director and as Vice President. I have attempted to balance voicing my opinion, avoiding a personal agenda, and keeping in mind what is best for our community. I don’t hesitate to venture into unfamiliar territory or go against the grain when necessary. I am committed, thoughtful and open-minded. I love being a part of things and I am passionate about this community. My past and present involvement in Tara Woods is

varied: not only on the Board, but also the Entertainers (behind the scenes and as an actor), Bingo Committee, Blood Pressure Monitoring, Blood Mobile Drives, Community Improvement Committee, Spring Fling Committee, Website Committee, Lee County Special Needs, The Day of Caring (basket maker and organizer). My goal as a Board Member would be to represent the residents of Tara Woods by being an active liaison between residents and management. I would listen to the community, act on their request, and be transparent with all communications. I hope I can count on your vote in the upcoming election. Thank you for your consideration.

PETER KRILIVSKY After receiving my degree in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, and after I served in active duty with the Army during the Viet Nam Crisis, I embarked on a very successful career in management and business ownership. I have been an entrepreneur all my working life and bring many years of business experience. I have been a resident of Tara Woods for the past eight years. I have served on the Board for the past four years, initially as a Director at Large, and then last year

as the Board’s Vice President. Initially I was the Board’s liaison to eight groups, reinstating three groups: Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Neighborhood Watch/Silver Alert, and CERT. I was also instrumental in expanding the Activities committee and getting funding for the group to be able to offer discounts to HOA members for various events which enhances the HOA membership. I have also been an active member of the Statutory Rent Committee, which this year was able to save the Clubhouse Meeting room and start the process for an

expanded Fitness Center. Under my leadership there have been several worthwhile venues presented. As Vice President this year, my overall responsibility expanded to oversight of operations and administration of the HOA. Also, the Website and Community Development committees were added to the mix. I pride myself in always being available and open to listening to any of the residents’ concerns. All the decisions that I have made as a residents advocate have always been made for the good of ALL the residents. I have enjoyed serving the community these past few years and ask that you vote for me so that I can continue the work that I have started.

LYNN LESSMILLER Hello, I am Lynn Lessmiller. My husband, Jeff, and I have been here in Tara Woods as full-time residents since November 2019. I have proudly served on your TWHOA Board since August 2020 as your Webmaster. I believe a Board should be a diverse group of different people from different backgrounds with several views, opinions, and ideas, and not just a group of associates with the same agenda. A little about myself: I come from a large family in North Carolina. I am family driven and believe family should always come first. I love photography, collecting seashells, sharks teeth, and

whatever the ocean sends. I also enjoy being a performer in The Entertainers. I love to laugh and will most likely be the one in the room to try to break the ice when things start getting heated. I was a property manager for four years, but for most of my career I was in legal collections for over thirty years. I would like to continue serving as a TWHOA Board Member and will continue to listen to you with an open ear and an open mind.

CAROL A. SCHNEPP Friends of Tara Woods, I am seeking a position for one of the Board of Directors openings for another term. My background, both professionally and personally, has helped prepare me to continue to take on such a role and solidified my leadership abilities. I work well with our current board and believe I have played a role in changing/improving our community. My integrity, drive, and ambition have served me well throughout my life and would certainly continue to be an asset to the Tara Woods Board of Directors. I achieved my goal of putting two of our amenities back on track with Hometown America through our park manager, which

are Ceramics and the Craft Room. Clear and consistent communication is a skill I feel will continue to benefit the Board of Director position. My objective is to continue to listen to the residents as to their wants, and advocate to make it reality for the better of the entire community. In closing, I take great pride in our Tara Woods community and would be honored to serve again on the Board of Directors. Working together, we, as a community of family, can and will make a difference. Thank you for your time and consideration.

BARBARA WERNER-LUBICH I am running for re-election to the Board of Directors. Why? Because I believe in giving back to the community, I live in. Some of the ways that I have done that here in Tara Woods are: serving as TWHOA Membership Secretary for the past two years, acting as one of three leads of the Tara Woods 2020 and 2024 Health Fair, chairing the July 4th celebration event the past two years, helping to start Tai Chi classes, taking leadership roles in Tara Woods CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), and coordinating the Community Directory. In

my social time, I play pickleball, attend MidAtlantic Club events, and plan other social networking events. I am a second-generation Tara Woods resident; my father having lived here since 1995. I moved to Tara Woods year-round in 2018 and live on Steamboat Loop with my husband Bruce. In my life before retirement, I was an RN in ER and Trauma, and spent fifteen years in healthcare risk management, leading a team of sixteen hospital risk managers. I also served as an officer and member of several professional,

community and nonprofit boards over my career. I serve on the Patient and Family Advisory Group at ShorePoint Health in Port Charlotte and was vice president of the Family Advisory Council at DT Jacobson State Veterans Home in Port Charlotte. I would be honored to be re-elected to the Board to serve our Tara Woods community. I believe I can continue to contribute to the Board and our Tara Woods community, by being a good listener, focusing on resident concerns, and working hard to address those concerns. I am particularly interested in working toward future strategic changes for electronic options for communicating with residents and continued transparency.

KEN WEISS Hi, I’m Ken, and I’ve lived in Tara Woods for three years. I’ve decided to put my name forward for the upcoming election of the HOA as a Director, because our community is important to me, as much as it is to you. I have a Sales and Marketing degree from the University of Arizona. I have owned my own businesses in the restaurant industry, managed numerous restaurants, and have been the Director of Catering for a major hotel. I presently manage a Department at Winn-Dixie. I was also instrumental in getting the

Vocational Career Institute in Tucson, Arizona accredited. My partner in life is Brenda, and we live on Charleston Circle. We moved to Florida from Springfield, Illinois. I have two daughters and three stepchildren who still reside in Illinois. I have two dogs, Zoey and Chloe, who love to greet you when visiting. My goal is to ensure that the concerns, opinions, and needs of Tara Woods residents are met – to have someone stand up and represent them. I believe that, whether

I agree with the resident or not, their voice needs to be heard and presented with an unbiased opinion. I plan to be a part of the communication to ensure that the residents are informed of what is happening in our community and to be as transparent as possible. I believe a board of directors should be diversified. I will bring enthusiasm and a new perspective to the board. I have an open-door policy, and my phone is always on. I would be very happy to be elected to the Board and represent YOU the residents of Tara Woods to make our community the best in Southwest Florida.

NORMAN (NORM) WING After much thought and deliberation over the past couple of years, and a final vote of confidence from my peers, I have decided to become a candidate for the 2024 Tara Woods Board of Directors. I have been married to my lovely wife Connie for almost forty-two years, and together we have six children, seventeen grandchildren, and seven greatgrandchildren. I guess in that respect you could call me a family man. Many of you may know me as one of the landscapers in the community for the past three years. Although it is hard work, especially in the Florida summertime, I take great pride in the services I provide for residents

here at Tara Woods. I have also made many friends through my participation in horseshoes, darts, and cornhole. Landscaping is not my only trait. Over the years I have been on several Board of Directors, mostly in my home state of Maine. I have served all positions, including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. I was an employee at L.L. Bean Inc. for nearly twenty years, primarily in the Accounting Department. After my tenure there, I managed several group homes, both for young adults and the elderly. Before moving to Florida, I served as Vice President of Operations for a major collection agency and was the go-to guy to solve

critical concerns and issues. I have been in Florida since April of 2007, and a resident of Tara Woods since March of 2019. My primary occupation since my move to Florida has been in the Gated Community arena, becoming a Supervisor of Security at Mediterra in Naples, and at Shadow Wood in Bonita Springs. In 2014, I received a GCSMA certificate as a Certified Gated Community Specialist. Upon my arrival in Tara Woods, I became the overnight Gate attendant and led the Neighborhood Watch team, as well as other groups that needed my contribution. If elected, I will be committed to representing all the residents of Tara Woods and their issues and concerns to the best of my ability.

Happy 2024, everyone! I am sending out a big THANK YOU to all residents who organized, helped to organize, and participated in the many events during the holiday season. The Clubhouse is decorated, Tara Boulevard is decorated, golf carts are decorated. The Holiday Lights Cruise from Fishermen’s Village was so joyful. AED’S LOCATIONS If you’re wondering what an AED is – and why they seem to be located in most offices and public buildings, you’re not alone. In fact, because these devices are now commonly available, more people than ever before are curious about them. So – just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

Can life insurance provide retirement income?

If your children are grown and your mortgage is paid off, do you still need to carry life insurance? It depends on your situation, but for many people, a cash-value life insurance policy, such as whole life or universal life, can be a valuable, tax-efficient source of retirement income. And by drawing on the cash value of your policy, you might be able to temporarily reduce the amount you take out from your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). This ability could be especially important when the financial markets are down — you’d probably like to avoid liquidating your assets when their prices have dropped. Basically, you can use the cash in your policy in these ways: Withdrawals – You can typically withdraw part of the cash value of your life insurance without losing coverage. You generally won’t incur income taxes on these withdrawals, up to the amount you’ve put into the policy — that is, the premiums you’ve paid. Once your withdrawals exceed this amount, you would generally owe taxes. Also, keep in mind that any withdrawals will reduce your policy’s death benefit and the available cash surrender value. Policy loans – Rather than taking a withdrawal from your policy, you could take out a loan. You won’t have to go through an approval process or income verification, and policy loans typically have lower interest rates than bank loans and don’t assess closing costs. Plus, because your insurer will be lending you the money and using the cash in your policy as collateral, your policy’s cash value can remain intact and still potentially grow. However, policy loans do carry some issues of which you should be aware. For one thing, while a loan usually isn’t taxable, you could end up owing taxes on any unpaid loan balance, including interest. And if this balance exceeds the policy’s cash value, it could cause your policy to lapse. Also, outstanding loans can reduce your death benefit. Cashing out – If you cash out, or “surrender,” your policy, you can receive the entire cash value, plus any accrued interest. You will have to subtract any money needed to pay policy loans, along with unpaid premiums and surrender fees, which can be significant. Also, any amount you receive over the policy’s cash basis — the total of premiums you’ve paid — will be taxed as regular income. 1035 Exchange – Through what’s known as a Section 1035 Exchange, you can transfer your life insurance policy to an annuity, which can be structured to pay you a lifetime income stream. The exchange won’t be taxable but surrender charges may still apply. Given the potential tax implications of the above options, you may want to consult with your tax advisor before making any moves. Also, be sure you are comfortable with a reduced or eliminated death benefit. Specifically, you’ll want to be confident that your spouse or other family members don’t need the proceeds of your policy. This may require some discussions about your loved ones’ plans and needs. And don’t forget that life insurance can help your family pay for final expenses, such as funeral costs and unpaid medical bills. Whether it’s providing you with needed retirement income or helping your family meet future needs, your cash value life insurance policy is a valuable asset — so try to put it to the best use possible. MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB NEWS We welcome Tara Woods residents from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and friends from all over the country. Check out our postings on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse for contact information and upcoming events. If you have any questions about our Club, please contact one of the officers (names posted on each newsletter). In December the Club had another Pajama Party. Several Club members made some incredibly beautiful and delicious charcuterie boards. They had a great time working together to create them. We toasted in the holiday season, relaxing in our pjs and enjoying each other’s company. The Club celebrates Christmas and Hanukkah at a luncheon in January after all the hubbub of the season is over. Plans are under way for a terrific 2024. ~ Sue Clark - Secretary
