FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Welcome to 2022. It is a new year, a new start, an opportunity to try something new and different. Tara Woods offers more things to try than any other community. The number one resolution each year is focus on improving your health. How to do that in Tara Woods? Check out the exercise room at the pool. Try the recently purchased universal machine or the new recumbent bike. Try your hand at tennis or pickleball. Both groups will help you regardless of your level. How about exercise in the Clubhouse? Water aerobics, water volleyball or walking in the lap pool. Beginning line dancing is fun and a great workout. Shuffleboard and bocce also offer a choice to be outside and enjoy the weather and meet new friends. Table tennis is fun. When was the last time you tried a new card game? The selections are numerous, neat games with new people or pick up a book or two at our library. Try walking around our beautiful community. You are guaranteed to see things and animals that might be new to you. Take your phone or camera to capture a stunning sunrise or sunset over one of our lakes. Bowling, horseshoes, summer golf, corn

hole, Bingo, book club, Tai Chi, inspiration group, theater group or chorus. I could go on. Tara Woods is improving each day – sometimes in a big way, like a brand new fully refurbished main pool, and sometimes in smaller ways, such as new exercise equipment. We expect to see continued improvements. Your TWHA is your official bridge and link to Hometown America. We represent the residents and work with Hometown to improve our lifestyle and our community. Thank you for your support and volunteering to be a positive force in our community. Make a resolution to laugh more and embrace the journey. We look forward to seeing all members at our annual Homeowners Meeting. Given a quorum, members will be voting on the 2022 budget and four Director positions. If you are a 2022 paid member but won’t be able to attend the TWHA meeting on Monday, January 10th, NO Problem. Send in your proxy along with your absentee ballot. If you have any questions, please contact me at my contact below. Lou Dunning, President 239-240-5847, loudunning2@gmail.com

FMO NEWS By Stuart Berman TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

You purchase life insurance; you purchase automobile insurance; you purchase homeowners’ insurance; you purchase many other insurances. Why not give yourself the gift that keeps on giving? Joing and becoming a member of the FMO is a gift that keeps on giving. A three-year membership is only $65.00, a ten-dollar saving over three single year memberships. Purchase once and forget for the next three years. What do I get for my $65.00? You get a voice in Tallahassee. Nancy Black Stewart is that voice. She keeps us abreast of what is happening in the State Legislature. Good bills or bad bills the FMO encourages you to contact your representatives. If you like to play Bingo, the FMO keeps its ears to the ground to make sure that the big Bingo operations don’t

promote legislation preventing communities like ours from playing. After all, it was the FMO that pushed through legislation to allow Bingo in our communities. Other benefits include a bimonthly FMO Magazine, legal questions answered by FMO’s Legal Counsel, Robert Burandt, District meetings held in our area from October to May as allowed by current health guidelines. And much more. If you are not a member, I encourage you to join. If you are currently a member, I urge you to renew for three years. If you are unsure of your membership status, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for taking the time to read, join or renew your membership. Wishing you and yours a very happy, healthy and safe 2022. Best wishes. ~ Stuart Berman

In case anyone hasn’t caught the title of this article, for 2022 our Resident Appreciation Day is going to be Resident Appreciation Week. During the week of February 14th and culminating on Saturday, February 19th, Hometown America will be hosting several activities for the residents. On Saturday, February 19th, there will be a Pirate Parade. While there will be no prizes, those wishing to decorate their golf carts or bikes, or dress in the pirate theme are encouraged to do so. Additional details to follow. After the parade, a scavenger hunt is being planned. Details are still in the planning stage and final details will appear in the February issue of The Columns. In accordance with current CDC guidelines and Hometown America’s concern for the safety and well-being of the community, all food coming into the community must be wrapped. You will make your lunch selection when you

make your reservations. Watch the Tara Woods website and the February issue of The Columns for additional information. At this time there will be NO structured games in the afternoon. You will be free to play whatever games you wish and are encouraged to use the cleaning supplies prior to and at the completion of your game. Bingo is still on the schedule, as well as a dance Saturday evening. During the dance we will introduce our honoree. Resident Appreciation Day, in the past, required an extended effort on the part of the residents. Our Community Manager, Angi, feels that Resident Appreciation Day is for the residents and she, along with Hometown America, is providing the support and assistance to make this week something all residents will enjoy. ~ Stuart Berman

QUARTER AUCTION THANK YOU I would like to start by just saying WOW. What a great turnout we had at our second Tara Woods Quarter Auction. We exceeded our goal of over $5,000 for the Day of Caring charities! We can’t thank everyone enough for those who volunteered their time helping with the auction and setting up the tables and chairs and cleaning up afterwards, those who donated items and/or gift cards for the baskets that were auctioned off, and finally to those who attended the auction and bid their quarters. We had approximately thirty residents who volunteered to help make this a success. Thank you to the Mid-Atlantic Club for hosting the dessert sale. Thanks to Sue Cook for her hard work in putting together all the baskets, Sheila Harris for coordinating the seating, and a special thanks to Chris Olson for chairing the Day of Caring. We are hoping to have another Quarter Auction sometime in early November 2022. Thank you, Tara Woods Residents, for helping to bring back the Magic of Tara Woods. ~ Judy Girty, Chairperson

HELPING HANDS Last year a group of residents formed a working committee to assist other residents with minor landscaping needs around their homes. The purpose was to perform minor landscaping work if the resident was either physically disabled to perform the work or could not financially support hiring someone to work. An example of the type of work that we would perform would be weed whacking and bush trimming, but nothing major. We are going to ask the Tara Woods Manager to screen the requests to make sure that they fit into the suggested requirements. ~ Mike Renzulli and Mike Hoard

What are your financial resolutions for 2022?

As you know, 2021 was full of challenges. We were still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic when supply chains shut down and inflation heated up. So, if you’re like many people, you might not be sorry to see the year come to a close. But now it’s time to look ahead to a brighter 2022. And on a personal level, you may want to set some New Year’s resolutions. You might resolve to improve your health and diet, and possibly learn some new skills, but why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few ideas to consider: • Prepare for the unexpected. If you haven’t already created an emergency fund, now may be a good time to start. Ideally, you’d like to have three to six months’ worth of living expenses in this fund, with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid account. (If you’re retired, you may want your emergency fund to contain up to a year’s worth of living expenses.) Once you’ve got this fund established, you may be able to avoid dipping into long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as costly home or auto repairs or large medical bills. • Boost your retirement savings. The pandemic caused many us to reevaluate our ability to eventually enjoy the retirement lifestyles we’ve envisioned. In fact, 33% of those planning to retire soon said they started to contribute even more to their retirement savings during the pandemic, according to a study from Age Wave and Edward Jones. This year, if you can afford it, increase your contributions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. • Reduce your debt load. The less debt you carry, the more money you’ll have available to support your lifestyle today and save and invest for tomorrow. So, this year, resolve to cut down on your existing debts and avoid taking on new ones whenever possible. You can motivate yourself by measuring your progress – at the beginning of 2022, record your total debts and then compare this figure to your debt load at the start of 2023. If the numbers have dropped, you’ll know you were making the right moves. • Don’t overreact to the headlines. A lot can happen during a year. Consider inflation – it shot up in 2021, but it may well subside in 2022. If you changed your investment strategy last year to accommodate the rise in inflation, would you then have to modify it again when prices fall? And inflation is just one event. What about changes in interest rates? How about new legislation coming out of Washington? And don’t forget extreme weather events, such as wildfires and floods. Any or all of these occurrences can affect the financial markets in the short term, but it just doesn’t make sense for you to keep changing the way you invest in response to the news of the day. Instead, stick with a strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You may need to adjust this strategy over time, in response to changes in your own life, but don’t let your decisions be dictated by external events. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop positive habits that can help you face the future with confidence.

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION Welcome back to all the snowbirds, and it’s great to see all the familiar faces. Tennis is in full swing with the ongoing social tennis, which has been well attended. To everyone interested in tennis, regardless of skill level, social tennis is open to all. The first Round Robin of the season was set for December 18th. The sign-up sheet for our second Round Robin – in January – will be posted soon, so please sign up if you’re interested; the more the better – it’s a fun day for all involved. Tennis league play has also started along with our TWIT competition. Hope to see everyone on the courts. ~ Ed Sandre OPEN TENNIS The mixed doubles “Open Tennis” is played every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. BE SURE TO CHECK THE TENNIS BULLETIN BOARD ON A REGLAR BASIS FOR UPDATED INFORMATION ON WHAT IS GOING ON WITH TENNIS ACTIVITIES. TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League White Team - Stallions The White Team has had a good start this season. We are currently in first place among the six communities that play together. Pine Lakes, Sabal Springs, Lake Fairways, Admiralty, and Six Lakes make up the other teams. It is early in the season, and some teams do not have all their players here. In January when all the teams have all their players, team competition will be at its best. Remember, we still have two more matches with teams we have not yet played against; however, we are working at doing our best. You can check the Tennis Bulletin Board any time to see our standings and the weeks we play at home. We play on Tuesdays at 1:30 PM. Come out and cheer on our team. ~ Fred Puhlfuerst Blue Team - Mustangs Tara Woods will have a men’s Blue Division Team in the North Ft. Myers Senior Community Tennis League this season. The 2020-21 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The league season will begin in January and continue through March. The team will play home matches at 1:30 PM on Courts 1 and 3 on Thursday afternoons. A schedule will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board located

by the Craft Building near Court 1. Away games will also start at 1:30 PM on Thursdays. This is competition between seven nearby communities – intense, but friendly play. We invite everyone to come and support the Tara Woods Mustangs. ~ Roger Rafferty TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) This is just a reminder that we have started an internal co-ed tennis competition in Tara Woods. If you are reading this announcement for the first time, it is not too late to inquire about playing in a semicompetitive internal competition. We are looking for additional players so we can add players to additional courts. Contact Mike Renzulli for more details at 239543-4189. ~ Mike Renzulli ROUND ROBINS We held our first Round Robin of the season on Saturday, December 18th. It was a great time for all who played and then enjoyed the social gathering afterwards. We will be holding our second Round Robin on Saturday January 29th, and we are looking forward to another great turnout; we encourage anyone who missed out on the fun of the first one to sign up soon! ~ Greg Girard Submitted by Linda Engel

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…January has arrived, and we are ready for it! The Entertainers are getting closer to putting our show on stage, especially with March just around the corner. We will be building the set next month, and before you know it we will be entertaining those who are sitting in the audience laughing and applauding for our actors on stage. Those of us who work off/backstage hear the applause and enjoy it also. Be sure to mark your calendars for the second weekend in March. The doors open at 6:30 PM for the 7:00 PM show on Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12t.. In addition, the doors open at 1:30 PM for the 2:00 PM show on Sunday the 13th. This additional show on Sunday for a Matinee will give those who do not want to drive at night and those who work on Friday and Saturday a chance to see our show. And what the heck, we put so much time and effort into our shows, it just seems right to keep the show going. There are three important parts of a stage play; good material to work with, wonderful actors and crew to put the play on stage, and an enthusiastic audience to perform for. We have done our part; now is the opportunity for you, Tara Woods, to provide the third and final piece of this puzzle.

Our tickets will be going on sale in the early part of February, so look for more information next month. As usual, they will be sold at Saturday Morning Coffee, and before Bingo on Tuesday night. There will be more information on this at a later date. With the departure of Irene D’Amico (we very much miss Irene and John), we are looking to fill her “tiny” shoes for selling our tickets. Like I said, there will be more information later. Life’s a stage and we are constantly changing the scenery.” Pat Dunning, President of the Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com

CANADIAN CLUB Welcome back, Canadians. What a nice feeling to be able to return to our Tara Woods homes after such a long absence. We have been happily dusting and cleaning almost two years of what had accumulated while most of us were absent. We look forward to seeing and getting caught up with everyone over the next few months. A big thank you to Anne Turner, Lesley Krauss, and Angela Plested for making the delicious cookies for the tree trimming, and we are now looking for volunteers to do the same for the untrimming on Saturday, January 8th. Please let Brenda Redgers or Patti Thompson know if you could help and join us to pack away the Christmas decorations for another year. We have three dates available for a gathering in the new year 2022: Friday, January 21st, Friday, February 18th, and Friday, March 25th, if anyone is interested in organizing an event. The Clubhouse is available to us for these time slots. In discussing this with our members, there is some reluctance in gathering inside due to COVID concerns, but the patio is open. Let me know if you want to organize something for these dates. The Yard Sale sponsored by the shuffleboard group is being held in January and tables are available from Ken Atkinson. It’s always a fun time and a great opportunity to clean out items we are not using anymore. We look forward to Resident Appreciation Day in February and my understanding is to look forward to a different format. Stay tuned for updates. I know we have had a few Canadians leave Tara Woods but have also heard of newcomers. Please let them know of upcoming events and if they and you could send your info, Tara Woods addresses/phone numbers/emails/Canadian addresses so we can update our directory. Send to Brenda Redgers and I will do my best to update the list. Let’s all enjoy the warm days in this New Year as we buzz about on our carts, enjoy the activities and friendship available to us here at Tara Woods. Looking forward to reconnecting with you all. ~ Brenda Redgers

TAI CHI IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning Tuesday, October 5th, Tai Chi classes meet the same days, Tuesday and Thursday, but at a new time 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. The time change is necessary to accommodate The Entertainers group. Tai Chi classes continue and are going strong in Tara Woods. A dedicated group of residents continued practice through the summer, under the patient and supportive guidance of our incredible instructor, Tony Fettig. Tai Chi students have progressed through the first twenty-four movements of the 108 movement set. As we head into full “season”, we look forward to welcoming back our snowbirds who began classes with us in April, as well as any newbies who would like to begin Tai Chi. Tony will help you get caught up with the rest of the class. Not familiar with Tai Chi? Here’s some info so you can decide if Tai Chi is right for you. When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, six of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week. How do I sign up for classes? Who do I contact with questions? We ask that you sign up for classes. Contact Barbara Werner-Lubich, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 410-409-5874, Email: barbara.wernerlubich@gmail.com OR Deb Nespolo, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 401-309-1136, Email: debra.nespolo@gmail.com. What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing.

Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you. What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally. What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation. Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit. Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable. Just want to try outTai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

NEW IMAGE CHORUS Happy 2022. I sincerely hope all is well with you and your families. We should be welcoming back the last of our snowbirds to Chorus. I want to thank the members of the Chorus who not only put up THE NEW IMAGE CHRISTMAS TREE but also will be taking it down. As the expression goes, we can accomplish quite a bit by offering a helping hand. ATTENTION SOPRANOS. Your voice is requested by the New Image Chorus, along with altos, and anyone who wants to have a good time and exercise their lungs. Your attendance and participation will be greatly appreciated. There are NO auditions, NO tryouts. You don’t even have to know how to read music. Just come to the Clubhouse on Mondays at 12:30 PM. Practice is only one day a week and lasts for two hours with a break in between. It is important that you bring your song book with you. This way you will have the words to the songs we

are singing, in front of you. Who knows, you could have fun, stay healthy and meet some wonderful neighbors at the same time? May 2022 provide you with good health and happiness, and most important, stay safe. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your support. ~ Stuart Berman

LOOKING FOR BRIDGE PLAYERS We play bridge on Tuesday afternoons in the card room, at 12:30 PM. We’d love to have you join us. We are looking for more bridge players.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB Welcome Back! The Tara Woods Computer Club suspended its meetings with the start of the COVID restrictions in March 2020, but our regular meetings will resume on the first Thursday of January (January 6th). Free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods will be held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month will be devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer but may have to be shortened to finish by the end of the season. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. The first topic we will discuss is Windows 11 on January 13th. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. We will spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered will always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. You can attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if

you want to follow along on it. I have continued to provide my normal services in the park. I give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 239-652-0488. Please continue to be careful and stay healthy. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor
