FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou • What does volunteering do? It helps a community, our community, to help develop a more sustainable way of life. Community service and volunteerism are investments in our community and the people who live here. • Who does volunteering? Residents who want to build their resilience, enhance their knowledge base, and gain a sense of responsibility for their own community. • What’s in it for you? Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not. Older volunteers tend to walk more, find it easier to cope with everyday task and are less likely to develop high blood pressure and have better thinking skills. It also helps you meet new people and make friends. • Many people when they retire or semiretire find that they have a lot of time on their hands plus valuable life experiences and skills, and are not sure what to do with them. • Thank you for living in Tara Woods. Our community is driven by volunteers! They are the ones that make our lives here what we want and expect. Thank you to the hundreds of our volunteering people that help daily in so many, many different areas. I invite you to consider sharing some of your time, your
energy, your life experiences, your passions, and service with our community. It makes our community better and at the same time it increases your self-esteem. • Your Homeowners Association has been remarkably busy working together with our Community Manager, identifying and advocating for major projects to improve our community. At the same time, we continue to serve as a bridge to Hometown America for you on more daily issues that need attention. HEADS UP – your Tara Woods Homeowners Association meets once each month with Community Manager, Angi, to discuss community and residents’ concerns and requested improvements. The minutes of these meetings can be viewed on the Community Improvement page at www. twhoa.net – your Homeowners Association website. DID YOU KNOW THAT – the happiest people in Tara Woods don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have. Lou Dunning, President, 239-240-5847, loudunning2@gmail.com

FMO NEWS TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS In the May issue of The Columns there was an important article under FMO News called Project Eagle Eye. The FMO is collecting data on everything from lot rent increases to possible lawsuits and everything in between. If you have not read it, I would encourage you to read it. If you read it, I would encourage you to read it again. The information the FMO is attempting to collect is from all developments where the residents do not own the property but pay a lot rent. It is being collected throughout Florida. If you are unsure what to report, please contact the writer. If you are not a member, please consider joining. How many times have we been told that there is strength in numbers? Your support of YOUR FMO is important to its continued success and can only continue with your support. Applications and return envelopes are on the back bulletin board. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the writer. To our snowbirds who have not gone Up North yet, wishing you safe travels and a safe return to Tara Woods. Thank you for your support of the FMO. ~ Stuart Berman

SATURDAY MORNING COFFEE NEWS Last month, to celebrate the re-opening of the Clubhouse after the floors were refinished, resident Ken Weiss supplied Dunkin’ Donuts for Saturday Morning Coffee. Ken is the General Manager of the Dunkin’ Donuts in South Fort Myers. He has generously offered to supply free Dunkin’ Donuts on the first Saturday of the month! Thank you, Ken, and thank you, Brenda, for driving down and getting them for us each month. Starting June 4, the donuts will be free, but the rolls, bagels and coffee will be sold as usual. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. The Kitchen Committee could still use a couple of people this summer to set up the coffee
the Friday before and to serve on Saturday morning. You would be needed only once a month June through October. Please see me to learn more about it. Encourage your friends and neighbors to join you at Saturday Morning Coffee, where you not only get to meet new people and can chat with old friends, but you are informed with the latest, most up-to-date information about what’s happening in the community. Don’t rely on “noodle news”. Come hear for yourself and have your questions answered. Hope to see you on Saturday! Janet Daly, Chair, Kitchen Committee

BLOOD DONATIONS WHY ARE BLOOD DONATIONS SO IMPORTANT? Blood donations are so important because one simple donation could save someone’s life. Also, a single donation can be separated into a variety of blood components; the platelets may go to a child with leukemia, the plasma to a patient with a clotting problem, and the red blood cells to an accident victim. About 800 units of blood are needed per
week, and the blood centers rely on life-saving donations from the community to maintain inventory levels. All blood donated at Lee Health stays within the health care system to care for patients in Southwest Florida. TARA WOODS’ NEXT BLOOD DRIVE WILL BE: TUESDAY, JULY 12 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon PLEASE SAVE A LIFE BY DONATING IF YOU CAN.

What investors can – and can’t – control As an investor, you can easily feel frustrated to see short-term drops in your investment statements. But while you cannot control the market, you may find it helpful to review the factors you can control. Many forces affect the financial markets, including geopolitical events, corporate profits and interest rate movements – forces beyond the control of most individual investors. In any case, it’s important to focus on the things you can control, such as these: • Your ability to define your goals – One area in which you have total control is your ability to define your goals. Like most people, you probably have short-term goals – such as saving for a new car or a dream vacation – and long-term ones, such as a comfortable retirement. Once you identify your goals and estimate how much they will cost, you can create an investment strategy to help achieve them. Over time, some of your personal circumstances will likely change, so you’ll want to review your time horizon and risk tolerance on a regular basis, adjusting your strategy when appropriate. And the same is true for your goals – they may evolve over time, requiring new responses from you in how you invest. • Your response to market downturns – When the market drops and the value of your investments declines, you might be tempted to take immediate action in an effort to stop the losses. This is understandable – after all, your investment results can have a big impact on your future. However, acting hastily could work against you – for example, you could sell investments that still have solid fundamentals and are still appropriate for your needs. If you can avoid decisions based on short-term events, you may help yourself in the long run. • Your commitment to investing – The financial markets are almost always in flux, and their movements are hard to predict. If you can continue investing in all markets – good, bad or sideways – you will likely make much better progress toward your goals than if you periodically were to take a “time out.” Many people head to the investment sidelines when the market tumbles, only to miss out on the beginnings of the next rally. And by steadily investing, you will increase the number of shares you own in your investments – and the larger your ownership stake, the greater your opportunities for building wealth. • Your portfolio’s level of diversification – While diversification itself can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can help greatly reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. Just how you diversify your investments depends on several factors, but the general principle of maintaining a diversified portfolio should govern your approach to investing. It’s a good idea to periodically review your portfolio to ensure it’s still properly diversified. The world will always be filled with unpredictable, uncontrollable events, and many of them will affect the financial markets to one degree or another. But within your own investment world, you always have a great deal of control – and with it, you have the power to keep moving toward all your important financial objectives.

THE MAGIC OF TARA WOODS THE MAGIC OF TARA WOODS ABOUNDS BUT IT NEEDS A LITTLE HELP A coalition, made up of Vicki Hoard and Company, the Mid-Atlantic Club and the Neighbors Helping Neighbors group, is planning to provide a holiday meal and fellowship for the special need residents, the elderly, those who are alone with no local family, or homebound residents during the Christmas season. This would take place on Sunday, December 18th, at 1:00 PM in the Clubhouse, and will be funded by Hometown America. However, this partnership needs your help to identify those residents who would like to take advantage of this outreach. It is a challenge to identify them, so if you personally qualify or know of someone who may qualify for the meal, please contact one of the following persons, in order that a comprehensive list can be compiled, and invitations sent. • Vicky Hoard 330-697-4630 • Judy Brda 239-731-1797 • Claire Schwinn 847-602-3390 You can also nominate a qualifying resident using the sign-up sheet under the Neighbors Helping Neighbors poster found in the
Clubhouse. It is understood that not all of the residents who qualify for the event are capable of making it to the Clubhouse. Meals will be delivered to the homebound, and a shuttle service will be made available to residents who need transportation to the Clubhouse. The Magic of Tara Woods has nothing to do with the physical property of the community and all of its amenities; it is the people and groups that reach out and provide fellowship and help, to all of the residents. Please take the time to contact one of the above persons to take advantage of this opportunity, or to let them know of someone who would benefit greatly from this outreach. Help make the holiday season special for those who may not have the chance to experience the Magic of Tara Woods. Thank You.

HURRICANE HURRICANE PREPARATION PREPARATION Residents packed the Clubhouse to hear from the Lee County Sheriff’s Department on valuable information concerning preparing for a hurricane. The seminar provided excellent handouts and real life experiences from Kim Swanson and Sheriff’s Deputies, on the importance of having a plan BEFORE a hurricane
is imminent. In addition, the residents received an informative presentation and demonstration on the Sheriff’s newest tool, a drone. Thank you to the Sheriff’s Department and our Homeowners Association’s Neighbors helping Neighbors Committee.
THE FAST-APPROACHING FLORIDA HURRICANE SEASON Hurricane Season is fast approaching and Tara Woods residents, especially those who have never experienced a Hurricane here in Florida, now is the time to prepare.
A copy of the “All Hazards Guide” prepared by Lee County was enclosed with your May Columns delivery. This important guide outlines a hurricane supply list, important phone numbers and websites to have during an emergency, evacuate or shelter in place guidelines, “Plan-Prepare-Pass it on tips”, Shelters and how they work, pet safety tips, evacuation zones and information on “Special Medical Needs Program”.
Please take the time to review this important booklet. Plan today where you might evacuate to in the event of mandatory evacuation. For Special Needs residents, those residents who need electricity to operate prescribed medical devices or have special medical needs, please fill out the Special Needs form found on the Tara Woods homeowners’ website and send to the county. You need to register every year for this program to qualify for preferred shelter entry. Don’t procrastinate. The planning you do today may save your life tomorrow. WAYS TO DEAL WITH ROBOCALLS 5 Ways to Deal with Annoying Robocalls Protect Your Identity and Kick Scammers to the Curb Submitted by Neighbors Helping Neighbors: According to the latest data, scammers and telemarketers make 1,528 robocalls to Americans every single second. No wonder they’re driving us all crazy! Some of these calls are legitimate reminders about doctor’s appointments and payment plans, but around 55% of them are just nuisances and we can’t rely on the government to stop them. If you’re sick of hearing about “your car’s extended warranty” or the student loans you paid off 40 years ago, try these five tips to cut down on robocalls and outwit scammers. 1. Explore your carrier’s free tools. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon will offer services to cut down on scam calls. Some of them are free and/ or come with your phone, but others you have to pay for or activate. If you have Verizon, for example, you can download the “Verizon Call Filter” app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Visit your carrier’s website or call them to learn about the tools they offer. 2. Download an ad blocker. For extra protection, you can download a separate ad
blocker from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Hiya is free and that will give you caller ID and block spam calls, and costs $1.99 per month for cellphones. Nomorobo is an award-winning option that’s free for landlines and costs $1.99 for cellphones. 3. When in doubt, let it ring out. If you don’t recognize the number calling, don’t answer. You can always call back if they leave a legitimate voicemail. 4. Suspect Spam? Hang up. So, you accidently answered a spam call, whether it’s a person or a robot call on the line, hang up immediately! Even saying your name or the word “yes” could set you up for identity theft. 5. Handle voicemails with care. If you get a suspicious voicemail, never call the number, or visit the website given by the caller. Instead, Google the company or agency they claimed to be with and call that number. If the real agency has no idea about the call, you’ve just escaped a trap. By taking all five of these steps, you can protect yourself and your wallet from Ponzi schemes, identity thieves, and annoying telemarketers. For even more specific advice, visit AARP.com and search “The Definite Guide to Reducing Robocalls.”

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen… summer and the rainy season seem to go hand in hand. I guess the song by Ella Fitzgerald which goes, “Into each life some rain must fall” is correct. We need rain just like we need sunshine. The Entertainers have needs also. We need our community to support us and all the arts in our community. Next year when we put on our play and the chorus puts on their show, be sure to be there, supporting your community in their efforts. For the summer, the actors and crew are
relaxing, and some are studying their lines. Janet is looking how to make the scenes work and I am working to make the set work for our productions. Overall, it is a relaxing time for everyone. Enjoy your summer, one and all. ‘Killing people with kindness’ takes way longer than you’d expect. Pat Dunning, Stage Manager Entertainers 239-240-5848 padunning46@gmail.com
GARDEN CLUB The rainy season has snuck in, humidity is up, and a lot of our neighbors have gone north. Summer is here. While you are relaxing with a glass of Sweet Tea, our thoughts have strayed to November. The Craft Fair will be back Saturday, November 5th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This year we will once again be inviting outside vendors in, and our Fair will be open to the public. If you were a vendor last year and would like to be included again this year, hang on for more news to come.
Did you know Fort Myers was once known as the Gladiolus capital of the world? The Gladiolus is native to South Africa and needs to be planted in a sunny spot in sandy loom soil. The first bulbs were planted in Fort Myers in 1935 in the Iona district and eventually covered several thousand acres. The Gladiolus era ended when the last of the farmers retired in 1980. The Garden Club’s next meeting will be Saturday, October 8th. Enjoy your summer, be safe, and stay healthy. ~ Carol Shields

SHILOH SPEAKS
As we all know, it’s June. Even though June brings on graduations, class reunions or family reunions, weddings, along with June are some important dates: June 14th is Flag Day, June 19th is Father’s Day, and, of course, June 21st is the first day of summer, which is the longest day of the year and brings us the Dog Days of Summer. On the downside of June, Florida may experience hurricane season from June 1st through November 30th. Just a reminder to play it safe, strong, and smart on the preparations during these next six months. As we all know, most of our Tara Woods residents have headed back Up North while our full-time residents here (who don’t have the opportunity to get away) are wondering if there is an alternative to enjoy our summer here. In this segment of Shiloh Speaks, I’m giving my fellow readers some day trips to enjoy this summer.
Sarasota – Every Monday for free (yes FREE is good), explore the art works at the Ringling Brothers Art Gallery. Naples – Botanical Gardens, Naples Zoo, Freedom Park. Fort Myers – Jet Blue Park (baseball), Big Cypress Preserve, Lakes Park, Edison House, Sunset Cruises, Echo Park. Punta Gorda – Fishermen’s Village.
These are just a few getaways; if you know others who might be interested, share these ideas. When it’s all said and done, we can all relax by our swimming pool. Well, my time is up for Shiloh Speaks for this month – a reminder that I’ll be taking my R&R till the next article that comes out in October – after all, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere. Pick up after us! P.S. – Happy Fourth of July celebrating our independence for 246 years! Happy tails, Shiloh

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB NEWS We welcome Tara Woods residents from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia and friends from all over the country. Check out our postings on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse for contact information and upcoming events. If you have any questions about our Club, please contact one of the officers (names posted on each newsletter). Our meetings will resume on Sunday, October 16th, with a “smoker,” a Pit Boss smoker. We may also try to casually gather once or twice over the summer to keep in touch with our full-time residents. Announcements will be posted on our bulletin board and emails will be sent to all members. Next Christmas season the Mid-Atlantic Club will join with Vicki Hoard and Friends and the Neighbors Helping Neighbors group to help make the season bright for residents in our community who are homebound or have no family with whom to share the holiday. Check out the article in this issue of The Columns to see how you can help in this effort. ~ Sue Clark
