FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou

Your Tara Woods Homeowners Association continues to grow and add new members. If you are a relatively new member, Welcome and Thank You! If you have been a valued member for years, we thank you for your continued support and belief in the value of your Homeowners Association.

Your HOA Board of Directors is comprised of eight resident volunteers. The over 29 committees reporting to the Board represent over 150 individual volunteers who donate their time and talent to the betterment of our special Community.

Why belong to the Homeowners Association? Your membership shows your solidarity with your neighbors and support of our Community. The HOA is your official bridge to Hometown America, putting forward residents’ concerns and issues.

Members who register have full access to the TWHOA website www.twhoa.net, after registering. This full access includes all the minutes of the Board meetings, Association meetings, Community Improvement meetings, and much, much more. Also included with your membership is “Monday’s What’s Happening” email highlighting the week’s events and items for sale. The website includes periodic “Minute with the Manager” messages directly from the Community Manager to residents to keep all residents updated.

In the event of information that needs to be

disseminated quickly, members receive an “email blast”. The goal of YOUR HOA is to provide timely, accurate, and transparent information to the membership.

Going north for a while? No problem, stay in touch through the website. It is always available to you if you are a member and have registered on the website.

In addition, the Board is working together with our Activities Committee to provide members with either free or discounted tickets to selected events and/or trips. Stayed tuned.

We are all looking forward to a fun-filled, quiet (hurricane wise) summer!!

HEADS UP – coming soon – on Saturday, June 3rd, at the Clubhouse is our first shredding event – free to members of the HOA and only $5.00 for non-members. Check it out. (Or join the HOA now for only $15.00 per year.)

DID YOU KNOW THAT - On Spot Dermatology will be here in Tara Woods on Tuesday, June 6th, from 7:30 AM until 3:00 PM. Thank you to our Neighbors Helping Neighbors Committee.

ATTENTION VETERANS!!

Many of you are not aware of USAA Auto and Home Insurance specifically designed for veterans AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS: spouses, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren etc. I can attest to the fact that the savings are substantial (for myself and my family) since becoming a member several years ago. You just need to call: 1-800-531-8722 to enroll.

FMO NEWS

TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

I would like to welcome Mike Renzulli to the FMO Team. Mike will be the Legislative Liaison between the FMO and Tara Woods. Thank you, Mike, for taking on this most important task.

By the time you read this, the 2023 Legislative Session will be over. One of the bills, in the current session, that has a direct impact on Tara Woods residents is a repeal of the sales tax when we sell our homes. While I don’t have the results, at this writing, YOUR FMO, along with our HOA, collected over 100 letters that were forwarded to our Representatives in Tallahassee asking them to support this bill. We will bring you an update in the next issue of The Columns.

If you are thinking about joining the FMO or are unsure of your membership status, please do not hesitate to contact me. We constantly hear this. There is strength in numbers and every vote

counts. Whether you are voting for a political candidate or lending your name to support or vote against a specific piece of legislation, your vote and voice is important.

Currently, dues are $25.00 per year or 3 years for $65.00. Effective August 14th, the Annual Membership dues will increase to $30.00, and the 3-year membership will increase to $75.00. If you are within 60 days of your renewal period, you may renew at the current rate. If you are unsure of your status, please contact Stuart Berman at 239-220-2369 or stuartberman34@yahoo.com. Membership applications can be found on the back bulletin board or online at FMO.org.

Thank you for your support of OUR FMO ORGANIZATION.

We have lunch, cocktails, fun and a social. Hope to see some new faces. Any questions, call Polly Brown at 239-246-2391 or Carol Shields at 239-731-0481.

We are back. Can’t wait. Really excited. Looking forward to seeing everyone and having fun.

Music will be distributed on Monday, September 25th, with the first rehearsal on Monday, October 2nd. All rehearsals are held on Monday from 12:30 to 2:30 PM. There is also a break about halfway through.

Whether you can sing or not, read music or not, THE NEW IMAGE CHORUS WANTS YOU.

What a wonderful way to exercise, have some fun and meet your neighbors. No tryouts. Just show up.

If you have questions about the chorus, please contact Stuart Berman, Polly Brown, Lou Cashin or Carol Shields. What a combination.

See you in September. Thank you, Stuart Berman

STOP SIGNS AND 20 MPH

What do stop signs and 20 miles per hour posted signs have in common? They are posted throughout Tara Woods for YOUR safety and the safety of your guests, friends, neighbors, and those making deliveries. Let us not forget our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and all those who come to visit.

Why do we have these signs? The signs are posted around the community to protect you and those around you. It may be someone walking, a dog on a long leash, wildlife, or any number of birds that call Tara Woods home. You do not want to run into them.

The last thing you would want to do is strike someone or something. It does not take much to wave at someone in their yard or glance over to look at the fountains. Your cell phone may ring, or you get a text message. If you have young children in your vehicle, they can become a distraction.

Even at 20 miles per hour, your car can do significant damage to your vehicle, break something, hurt or maim someone, or any number of incidents that may occur by your

failure to maintain the 20 miles per hour speed limit and/or ignore the stop signs.

With more residents remaining in Tara Woods, the chances are greater that you or someone you know will either cause an accident or be in an accident.

We have walkers in the morning and in the evening. Unfortunately, sometimes they do not wear light clothing or carry a flashlight, making it difficult to see them. Going under the speed limit or coming to a COMPLETE stop could make the difference of possibility hitting someone or something.

When we build something, cook, or bake something, we follow the directions to ensure that whatever we are doing comes out the way we want it to. The same is true with stop signs and speed limit signs. Coming to a full stop and staying at or below the speed limit helps ensure that the result will be a safe trip.

Thank you.

CHECK OUT YOUR CERAMICS ROOM

We are located in the building behind the tennis courts. There is a kiln on-site to fire your work. This hobby is perfect for everyone from beginners to experienced. Members get a key to come at their own pace and time.

ENTERTAINING NEWS

With Father’s Day coming up in June, I’d like to start off by wishing all the fathers, grandfathers and father figures a Happy Father’s Day for Sunday, June 18th. This is a day we celebrate our dads, granddads and those who represent a special place in our hearts as fatherlike figures. For The Entertainers, it also reminds us that we have a special play coming up called “Daddy’s Girl”. This play takes place in a diner owned by Benard, a widower, and takes us on a journey to find his long-lost daughter with the help of his deceased wife, an all-knowing angel, and a cast of many interesting, if not usual, characters! I can’t wait to share this play with our community and know you will enjoy the high jinks that ensue! For our actors, remember, rehearsals begin in early October and although it seems like a long way off, it’s never too soon to begin working on your lines and character development!

I hope you all have a great June and July in Tara Woods, Happy Father’s Day, Happy Canada Day, and Happy 4th

of July! Stay safe my friends!!

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB

We welcome Tara Woods residents from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and friends from all over the country. Check out our postings on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse for contact information and upcoming events. If you have any questions about our Club, please contact one of the officers (names posted on each newsletter).

In May we experienced “A Taste of Philly” thanks to Dick Resh and his crew of helpers (Jean Resh, Celia Blotkamp, Hank and Sandy Kaczmarczyk). We enjoyed Philly cheese steak and chicken sandwiches with chips, a Tastykake, and our favorite beverages.

In June we will be treated to ice cream sundaes with Barbara Werner-Lubich and Nancy Schoeppner as our hostesses. In July the Club will participate in the 4th of July Golf Cart Parade with no regular meeting scheduled. We will meet on the third Sunday in August at 4:00 PM for appetizers on the Veranda.

Our Club loves good food and we generally have more than we can consume at our meetings. Barbara Simonson is chairing the Club’s effort to take our extra food to needy members of our community. Club members are asked to save containers for this purpose and bring them to meetings. ~ Sue Clark - Secretary

LADIES HAPPY HOUR

Our first Tara Woods Ladies Happy Hour happened on the Clubhouse Veranda under a partly cloudy sky of blue, with a soft breeze. Thirty-six Tara Woods ladies socialized while enjoying a variety of shared appetizers and their beverage of choice. Hosts Barbara Werner-Lubich and Alice Loveday led the group in a spirited game of Tara

Woods Trivia. Sue Clark and Deb Nespolo tied with 12 out of 20 correct answers. Sue won the tie breaker and went home with a beautiful orchid plant. The early evening event ended with calls for another Ladies Happy Hour. Stay tuned for more fun times on the Veranda with the Ladies of Tara Woods.

SPORTS, EXERCISE, and ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES

I want to thank the Tara Woods HOA Board for allocating funds for the Activities Committee. I have created a budget for those funds, and the Tara Woods Community continues to give me suggestions as to how to spend that money. We are planning several off-ground tours and events for the fall. Also, we plan to offer HOA membership discounts for those tours and events.

As always, I am thankful that our clubs and groups continue to meet during the summer: water volleyball, card games, and weekly cornhole toss, just to name a few.

Although our activities committee is on hiatus until September, we continue to communicate ideas, make phone calls to tour and entertainment companies, and make a list of your ideas for fun, to keep alive the Magic of Tara Woods.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE AED’S ARE?

If you’re wondering what an AED is – and why they seem to be located in most offices and public buildings, you’re not alone. In fact, because these devices are now commonly available, more people than ever before are curious about them. So – just what is an AED?

An AED, or automated external defibrillator,

is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-touse, medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

This one is located at the north entrance of the Clubhouse.

This is in the entry area of the Craft Room near the tennis courts.

WHEN TO USE AN AED (DEFIBRILLATOR)

If you’ve ever watched a TV medical drama, chances are you’ve seen someone shocked back to life by a health care provider who yells, “Clear” before delivering a jolt of electricity to the person’s chest to get the heart beating again.

The machine being used is called a defibrillator, and its use isn’t limited to a hospital setting. Devices called automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can be used at home and in school, are also found in a number of public places. These lightweight, portable devices are available without a prescription.

People with severe heart disease who are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest might consider having an AED. But AEDs can resuscitate people only with a specific type of irregular heart rhythm. Talk to a health care provider about whether owning an AED could help save your life.

When is an AED needed?

AEDs are used to revive someone from sudden cardiac arrest. This usually occurs when a disruption in the heart’s electrical activity causes a dangerously fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia) or a fast and irregular heartbeat (ventricular fibrillation). Either of these irregular heart rhythms keeps the heart from pumping effectively and can cause it to stop.

When this happens, the brain and other vital organs don’t get the blood and oxygen they need. This requires treatment within minutes to prevent death. The sooner the heart’s rhythm is restored, the greater the chance there won’t be permanent damage to the brain and other organs.

If an AED is near someone having ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, a bystander in a public place or a family member can use it to jolt the heart back to a regular rhythm. Using the AED could possibly save a life.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after cardiac arrest can keep blood flowing to the heart and brain for a time. But often only defibrillation can restore the heart’s rhythm. Together these treatments can improve the chances of survival.

How to use an AED

Open pop-up dialog box

Home automated external defibrillator (AED)

If someone has fainted and might need an AED:

• Check to see if the person is breathing and has a pulse.

• If you cannot feel a pulse and the person is not breathing, call for emergency help. If there are other people present, one person can call 911 while the other prepares the AED. If you’re alone, call 911 or emergency services first to make sure help is on the way.

• Turn on the AED. The automated external defibrillator gives you step-by-step voice instructions. It will tell you how to check for breathing and a pulse and how to position electrode pads on the person’s bare chest.

• Deliver the shock. When the pads are in place, the AED automatically measures the person’s heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. If it is, the machine tells the user to stand back and push a button to deliver the shock. The AED is programmed not to deliver a shock if a shock isn’t needed.

• Start CPR. Begin CPR after the shock is delivered if CPR is still needed. The AED will also guide users through CPR. The process can be repeated as needed until emergency crews take over.
