Each day, as I bike and drive through our community, I marvel at the astounding progress that has been made to bring our community back to better than before Ian. At the same time, I feel an overwhelming amount of frustration that we still have a long road in front of us I have every confidence that we will continue to address each and every obstacle that we meet. Some obstacles are relatively easy and can be quickly addressed, while others are more difficult and complex.

Our rate of volunteerism has never been higher. People have stepped forward and are stepping forward each day to volunteer for our community. There are many studies that show that the rate of people volunteering directly equates to the success and happiness of a community. If you help and watch out for your neighbor, we thank you. If you volunteer your time and talent to help, make us all better, we thank you. If you participate with others in activities here in Tara Woods, we thank you.

Even though we come from many different states and countries, we all have one thing in common: Tara Woods is our home. Be it part-time or full-time, Tara Woods is our home. Like any family, we don’t and won’t always agree on everything. That is natural and healthy, while keeping focused on making our home Tara Woods better.

One key element to staying positive is to stay

informed. Inherently, we all know that the road back is uphill. How can we best be prepared to maneuver the road? First and foremost, stay informed. How?

Tentatively, several members of the leadership of FMO will be here after Saturday Morning Coffee on March 18th. They will answer all your questions about the FMO and why it is so important for you to be a member.

The FMO Board and Committees do a lot behind the scenes. As a member you will be able to know firsthand what is going on.

On Friday, March 31st, the Garden Club will be hosting the Fashion Show. This is a free event open to all residents; all we will ask is for you to bring either a salad or dessert for the buffet table.

The show will feature fashions from Anthony’s of Punta Gorda.

We are looking for eight ladies who would like to have some fun modeling three different

outfits each.

Maximum size: top 1X, bottom 16.

You will need to be available one day about a week before the show to go to Anthony’s, and, with the help of the ladies in the store, choose the outfits you will model.

Your Neighbors Helping Neighbors group has arranged two speakers for March.

The Saturday Morning Coffee on March 4th will be hosted by Mary Plummer from MASA Medical Transport Solutions. On Thursday, March 23rd, at 3:00 PM in the Clubhouse, a spokesman from United Way will share with our community the various programs that are available from this very worthwhile organization. Look for more detail on what programs will be discussed as we get closer to the event. We will have a sign-up sheet under the Neighbors Helping Neighbors poster as we get closer to the event.

NEW IMAGE CHORUS

The New Image Chorus is looking for a Chorus Director as well as residents looking to exercise their vocal cords by joining the Chorus.

The plan is to start rehearsals on Monday, September 25th at 12:30 PM. This is an informal get- together to distribute music and catch up on old times with our Chorus members. Actual rehearsals will not start until the following Monday. Please check the TWHOA website on Mondays for additional information.

Chorus meets every Monday at 12:30 PM. Rehearsals last approximate two hours with

a short break. We meet every Monday, with our show usually the end of March or the beginning of April.

There are no tryouts, tests, or any special requirements. Just show up, get your music book, and start singing.

ENTERTAINING NEWS

So, Ladies and Gentlemen…here we are in March, is it just me, or is the time flying by faster and faster each year? Since I last wrote, we had our Opportunity Fair in January. The Entertainers booth was put together by a great team led by Lesley Krauss. I would like to thank each of the members of the team and Lesley for the great job they did. I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves, I know that I enjoyed myself at the Fair. I do hope that each of you got a chance to stop by the Entertainers booth, enjoy some snacks, and si gn up fo r gr eat ra ffle pr izes. Congratulations to the winners of those prizes: Dennis Purks and Sarah Casey.

This year we, the Entertainers, are presenting two plays, each very different. It is quite the challenge for our whole Entertainers group, but we are up to the task. The first one is “Help Desk”, and I think that we have all been there, calling on the phone to ask for help at a business, hoping to get our issue resolved. The second one, “Great Nursing Home Escape” is what happens when curious seniors have too much time on their hands. Both plays are very funny, appropriate to our community and present day. And I believe that you will enjoy each one. Our two plays will be performed on stage in a few days. If you haven’t already purchased your

tickets, I am sure we still have a few left. Here are the facts of when, where, and how much: “HELP DESK” and “GREAT NURSING HOME ESCAPE”

Saturday, March 4th, is our Welcome Spring and Sports night, and hopefully by this time you have signed up. The Club is supplying Sub Sandwiches and we are asking members with the last name A-M to make a side or salad and those with last names of N-Z to make desserts, both enough to serve 8-10 people. Wear your favorite team gear proudly!! We have many sports games planned, with the Battle of the States being the Grand Finale. Will Maine hold on to their title or will they be upset?

Saturday, April 8th, is our New England Bon Voyage Party where we bid adieu and happy trails to our snowbirds. Info for this party will be posted on the NEC bulletin board the first week of March and sign-ups, as always, are mandatory.

60’S, 70’S AND 80’S DANCE/PARTY

Oh, what a night!!! The 60’s 70’s 80’s Dance Party hosted by the New England Club was such a fun [and funny] night. People were dressed to impress all around the room. We only wish we had more “Best Dressed” prizes to give out.

Thank you to all. The 1960’s prizes went to Shelly & Rick Lubich and Tony & Gale Pinelli. The guys were unrecognizable in their wigs and outfits and the girls looked amazing. For the 1970’s, Paula & Rich Dykstra took home the prize; they looked spectacular. Bob [Marley] Plumley also won for the 1970’s as our resident Rastafarian. What a great outfit!! Congratulations to all the winners for the evening and thank you to all those who dressed to impress.

John Nichols of John’s Mobile Music did his usual outstanding job and kept the dance floor packed all night.

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB

We welcome Tara Woods residents from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and friends from all over the country. Mardi Gras was the theme of our February meeting. Celia Blotkamp and Dick & Jean Resh hosted the affair. Soup du jour was the meal of the day from some of the best cooks in all of Tara Woods. Yum, yum! Bonnie Dixon will host our March meeting and we just might be celebrating National Poultry Day, National Joke Day and National Caramel and Chocolate Day!

CRAFT ACTIVITIES

We’re excited to have a couple of craft nights in March. We had a paint night in February, which was well attended, and we hope to have a few more of these in the future. No experience required for the paint classes or other crafts. As long as you can hold a brush, or work a hot glue gun, you will have no issue crafting.

We have the Clubhouse reserved for doing more crafting. Please mark Tuesday, March 21st, 1:00 – 4:00 PM. Mark these dates on your calendar. A few of the craft ideas we have in mind are sign painting / wreath making / no sew bean-bag-type gnomes / pine cone gnomes / seasonal garland with felt / working with yarn / “no sewing” hanging farmhouse style type of decorations, etc.

The actual craft item will be announced once decided. Watch the bulletin board or we will have it posted on the Tara Woods website.

Craft Room: It is an ongoing project to organize and get the Craft Room back in shape by organizing it, so everyone can come look and use items available to them to make a craft.

We do have a little “wish list” and are in need of some items to make crafting more viable in trying to keep costs down for the craft classes that are offered. Classes could be up to twenty participants. If you no longer are using items that are on the list and would like to donate them, please contact Lynn Porter at alynnp@ icloud.com, Marie Peidlow at cisco1713@yahoo. com, or Maggie Johnston at Maggie.johnston@ hotmail.com, to make arrangements to get items to the Craft Room. TENNIS ASSOCIATION:

I hope everyone has had a great time this year playing in either the Open Tennis or the Round Robins. For any new residents, please join us in these events; it is a great way to meet people with the same interests as you.

For those who aren’t aware, joining the Tennis Association is only $5.00 yearly.

There is also a Ball Machine available for those interested for only $25.00 for lifetime membership. If you’re interested in any of these, feel free to talk to someone at the tennis courts.

TENNIS LEAGUES

Men’s League: White Team – Stallions

It has been a very competitive season to date; the team is in the middle of the pack with very close standings in the league. The season is already nearing an end; it seems like we just started, but it has been fun. The best part of the season is, of course, playing in front of our home fans

and being cheered on. ~ Ed Sandre

White Team – Mustangs

The Mustangs have hit a rough stretch in the schedule, playing against the top teams in the league and suffering injuries and illness to important players on our roster. We are still competing, and most matches have been closely played. We are slowly getting back to our normal roster and looking forward to climbing up in the standings once more.

The players are so appreciative of the support we get from our fans; it’s nice to see everyone at our matches cheering us on.

Our schedule now calls for us to be on our home courts five weeks out of the last six weeks to end the season; we are looking forward to these friendly confines again.

Thank you for the support – and we’ll do our best to entertain you.

The women’s tennis team is a third of the way through their season. The team recently played the second-place team in a tightly contested set of matches. We came away with a victory of 4 wins and 2 losses, and we are still in first place. All players have been practicing hard and have contributed to our success so far this season. Our games are played on Thursday mornings, and our playing schedule and our standings are posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board at the courts. ~ Mary

The tennis season progresses to nearly the halfway point as we finish the end of March. This year the Blue League consists of eight teams. The value and fun of this competition of our nearby communities is the fact that we get to know new people each season and become friends over the years!

Our Round Robins are held on the fourth Saturday of the month starting at 9:00 AM, and they take the place of Open Tennis on those dates. To anyone who hasn’t played in our Saturday morning Round Robin events, all are welcome to play! Our next event is on Saturday, March 25th, at 9:00 AM, followed by a BBQ lunch on the Verandah. It’s a great way to mingle and meet new friends – and for only $5.00 it’s a great value!

NEW 2023 TARA WOODS RESIDENT DIRECTORY NEWS

I am pleased to announce that the majority of the 2023 Resident Directories have been delivered. Each occupied household in Tara Woods will receive one copy of the directory. I would like to express and give a very special “Thank You” and my appreciation to the team that stepped up and delivered the Directory this year. Judy Kelly (and friends), Diane & Richard Breniser, Andrea Snyder, Bill & Mary Nothnagel, Louise & Pat Patterson, Sue & Bob Clark, Donna Erhardt, and Debbie Doty & Rod Dolin (new residents to the community). The delivery process requires that the Directories be given to a resident in the household. In some cases, the delivery team member may have to make multiple visits to a household. This requires dedication from an exceptional group of people. The best feedback I received was that many of them were able to visit different areas in Tara Woods, meet other residents and also the appreciation they received from the residents. Job well done and genuinely appreciated.

The Tara Woods Pickleball Group is pleased to announce The First Annual Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, March 4th, starting at 9:00 AM. All skill levels are invited. Entry fee is $3.00 for Group Members, $5.00 for nonmembers, and includes lunch.

All Teammates will be randomly selected one week before the tournament. The format will be double elimination, with losers in the first round moving into a parallel grouping so everyone still has a chance to win!

PING-PONG AND PARKINSON’S

Did you know? When we play ping-pong (or table tennis), the areas of the brain that are activated are the same areas Parkinson’s Disease affects the most. It’s a combination of two elements: cognitive thinking and movementtracking where the ball is going and hitting the ball at a rhythmic pace.

Exercising these brain quadrants by playing ping-pong has resulted in a national phenomenon to treat the commonly diagnosed neurological disorder. Nonprofit organizations

across the nation have started to fight this disease one game at a time--with the help of volunteer players of all skill levels and ages, of course.

Parkinson’s patients say this “therapy” has opened them up to new experiences in life, noting that each game can start out taxing due to physical tremors and mental frustrations-but, after around fifteen minutes of determination, their symptoms dramatically subside and will remain subsided for about three days after each game.

TAI CHI AT TARA WOODS

When are classes?

Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes meet yearround Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

Who is teaching classes?

Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has 20 years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years’ experience in Tai Chi, five of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week.

What is Tai Chi?

Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing.

Who is Tai Chi for?

Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you.

What are the health benefits of Tai Chi?

Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally.

What are classes like?

Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin.

First 20 minutes:

Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation.

Second 20 minutes:

From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit.

Last 20 minutes:

Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi.

What should I bring to class?

Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable.

Just want to try Tai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES

As you may have already heard, the HOA has established an Activities Committee. I am so thankful for those of you who already volunteered. Also, thank you to those who signed up at the Opportunity Fair; I will be contacting you soon. We have begun two new activities. We have added a water aerobics class at 9:30 –10:30 AM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thank you to Sharon LaPointe for leading us.

Chair volleyball meets each Wednesday at 7:00 PM. Anyone can play this sport, seated in your chair, volleying with a beach ball. We will have a demonstration at the Mardi Gras celebration. Thank you to Sally Morini and Dick Resh for organizing this activity. Our first fundraiser was the Mardi Gras Celebration on February 18th. Everyone enjoyed the photo booth, games, activities, and prizes for the best mask and the best decorated table.

Lastly, thanks to all of you for your suggestions at the Opportunity Fair. The committee is compiling the list of ideas. We will plan more activities soon. As always, you can contact me anytime with your suggestions or ideas.

LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. MAGIC SOFTBALL

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Spaghetti Dinner to help support the softball team. I hope everyone got plenty to eat and had a good time. We have a few new players from the community this year along with most of the players from last year. The season is not going as good this year; we have had several close games, but our record is less than 500.

We have had a couple changes for this year, making it tough for everyone to make it to the games. Not only did we change where we are playing, but the start time has also changed,

making it difficult for some of the guys and gals to make the games because they are still working.

This year we are playing in Cape Coral at the Northwest Sports Complex, and we start at 4:00 PM. If you would like to come out and watch, we would appreciate it. The address is Northwest 16th Place, Cape Coral. It is west of Chiquita Blvd., between Diplomat and Tropicana. Again, thank you to everyone for your support. Hope to see you at a game.
