IT’S SHOW TIME AGAIN! Tara Woods Sound & Lighting is pleased to bring back professional entertainment for our residents’ enjoyment. We will have our annual show in January and have booked another great performance.

“NEIL DIAMOND” SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 2024, at 7:00 PM Keith Allynn is a singing impressionist and tribute artist. His show mixes great Neil Diamond songs with good-natured clowning and the ability to befriend the room by simply chatting. It runs about an hour and forty-five minutes in length. He’s funny and he involves lots of audience participation. In other words, IT’S A VERY ENTERTAINING SHOW.

Tickets for the show are $20.00 per person and will be sold before BINGO on Tuesdays and on Saturdays, during Saturday Morning Coffee, beginning about thirty days prior to the show date. There will be both theater seating in front of the stage and cabaret tables in the back. (Reservations are required for cabaret seating.) Watch for the poster in the Clubhouse for more details. Contact Polly Brown on her cell phone at 239-246-2391, if you have any questions or about reservations. Your support inspires us to keep providing professional entertainment for the community and providing support to groups, organizations, and resident events. Many of you have told us that when Sound & Lighting puts on a show, you know that you are going to enjoy it, and we appreciate hearing that. Thank you so much for your continued support.

FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Exactly what is the Tara Woods Homeowners Association? It is a group of residents who give their time, experience, and perseverance to working together to make our community better. What is the mission of the Tara Woods Homeowners Association? To help provide social, recreational, and civic activities for members of the Corporation to promote the general welfare of the members. To provide a liaison (a bridge) between the members and Hometown America in matters which may be of concern to members. The Homeowners Association is a registered not-for-profit Corporation in the State of Florida. As such, it is bound by Florida law, specifically Florida Statute 723. We are also governed by our By-laws and Administrative Rules. You can google Florida Statute 723, and you can look on our website to see our By-laws and Administrative Rules. The Board is currently working to re-examine and renew the By-laws and Administrative Rules. HEADS UP – We have some great programs coming for HOA members. Previous examples: • Free Paper Shredding here in Tara

Woods for members. • Discounted tickets to a live theater performance at the Lab Theater in Ft. Myers. • Free coffee mugs to HOA members who show their card, along with the first cup of coffee free. Look for more. Don’t be left out. Join now! For as little as 3 ½ cents a day. It pays to belong. DID YOU KNOW THAT - Each year the members vote for four Directors to fill the Board of Directors. This could be current Directors whose two-year term has expired and who choose to run again, and it could also be residents who have been nominated to run for the Board. In this issue of The Columns, we have included the duties and responsibilities of a Director. If you have any questions, please contact me or any Board member. “Coming together is a BEGINNING, keeping together is PROGRESS, working together is SUCCESS!” by Henry Ford Lou Dunning, President, 239-240-5847, loudunning2@gmail.com

TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

We’ve all heard the expression ‘let my neighbor do it’. Chances are, if we left it up to our neighbor, some of the activities we enjoy here in Tara Woods would not be available. The same holds true with the FMO. Without each one of us being a member of the FMO, life would be much different in Tara Woods. We would not have our Legislative Lobbyist in Tallahassee. There would be no tie-down program. There would be no Florida Statute 723, the document that governs residents and owners of developments like Tara Woods. There would be no bingo. You would be paying a monthly sales tax on your lot rent. The list goes on. As a voting bloc, there is strength in numbers. Our Legislatures respond differently when you tell them you represent 15,000 members as opposed to 5,000 members. I encourage and ask each and every one of you, who are not members of the FMO, to become one. We are only talking about 10 cents a day. Applications are on the back bulletin board or on fmo.org. Anyone wishing to serve as the FMO Representative, please contact Andrea Snyder at asnyder959@comcast.net or 239-789-8384. Wishing you all the best during the upcoming holiday season. Thank you for your past and future support of the FMO. ~ Thank you, Stuart Berman

SAYING GOODBYE AND THANK YOU I never thought the day would come when I would ever say that Belle and I are moving out of Tara Woods. We want to thank everyone for allowing us to be part of this community. It has been a pleasure to have served on Neighborhood Watch and Silver Alert and being the representative for Tara Woods to the FMO, as well as being a part of the New York/New Jersey Club, the Mid-Atlantic Social Club, Sound

& Lighting, and Pancake Breakfast, in addition to many other activities. Somehow the years just flew by. As we approach year end, Belle and I send you the very best wishes for the holiday season and wish you all the best in the new year. Thank you for allowing us to be part of the magic of Tara Woods. ~ Stuart Berman

TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION 2600 TARA LAKES CIRCLE, N. FORT MYERS, FL 33917 Thank you for your interest in the Tara Woods Homeowners Association Board of Directors. The following information is provided to give you an overview of the expectations and responsibilities of a Board Member. If you have any questions or want additional information, please contact me, Lou Dunning, at 239-240-5847 or loudunning2@gmail. com, or any of the Board members. In the case of an appointed Director, you will serve until the next election. If you run and are elected, you will serve a two-year term, and since the Board operates twelve months per year, you are responsible for your assigned duties for the full term. Training is required for your position and is presented by the FMO. The training is paid for by the HOA. The objectives of Board members: • To promote the general welfare of the members. • To provide liaison between the members and Hometown America. • To help provide social, recreational, and civic activities for members. • To coordinate the work of the various committees. • To perform specific duties as assigned to support members.

In order to coordinate the work of your assigned committees and perform specific duties as assigned, plan to meet with your various committees to go over and update as necessary the summary of duties, and obtain their signatures along with yours. Each Director is responsible for attending all monthly Board meetings. Each Director is responsible for hosting at least five (5) Saturday Morning Coffees throughout the year. Each Director has a mailbox in the Board Room that you will need to check periodically. All Board meetings are guided by the three B’s: • Be respectful. • Be on time. • Be prepared – Prepare a short, written summary of the issues you report on for the Recording Secretary. As a Director, you will be attending, on a rotating basis, a monthly Community Improvement Meeting with the President and the Vice President, and meeting with the Community Manager. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list, but rather a basis and guideline for all Board members.

CALL FOR NOMINEES FOR 2024 TWHOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

rustyhipp85@gmail.com Text us at: 863-993-5176

The official call for nominees for the 2024 TWHOA Board of Directors will be made at the Monday, November 13th, 2024 TWHOA Membership meeting at 7:00 PM in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. There are four openings on the Board, and all are for two-year terms. Those whose terms expire are: Peter Krilivsky, Lynn Lessmiller, Carol Schnepp, and Barbara Werner-Lubich. In order to be eligible to serve on the Board, you must have paid your TWHOA dues for 2024 AND be a Tara Woods homeowner (listed on the title). You may be nominated by someone else or you can nominate yourself. Nominations may be submitted after the November TWHOA Membership meeting. As required by FL Statute 723, the law governing manufactured home communities like ours,

Directors are elected by the TWHOA voting household membership. FL Statute 723 also requires that the Directors then meet immediately following the Annual Meeting (during which the election occurs), January 8th, 2024 and elect the Board officers. If you are interested in being a candidate, submit a brief bio and photo to the Nominating Committee Chair, Tim Hoch, at tjh386@ hotmail.com. For more information about the TWHOA Board and Director responsibilities, contact any TWHOA Board member. Board member contact info and areas of responsibilities is on the TWHOA.net website. Also, read in the November issue of The Columns, a separate article on the expectations and responsibilities of Directors.

As promised, I have information on our newest Charity. As of October 8th, we have collected $1,075.00 in envelope donations. Don’t forget the Quarter Auction on Thursday, November 9th. All proceeds go to A Day of Caring. It is going to be a great year. Please deposit your envelopes in the ‘TWHA DUES & RENT CHECKS’ mail slot in the Clubhouse. A Day of Caring’s newest Charity: Holiday for Heroes Holiday for Heroes was founded in 2007 by Jonette Kessack, who owned a postage and wine store. This grassroots effort was started to fill a need to provide comfort and care to our deployed men and women all over the world. They are in North Fort Myers, and they are all volunteers. What started as a Holiday Program, our first year sending 40 packages, became a year-round effort. We now send 100 to 200 comfort packages each month to our brave men and women, and 1,000 packages for our Holiday Mission. We have now sent almost a total of 20,000 packages. In 2019, we started our Backpack for Homeless

and In-need Veterans Program partnering with the VA and various homeless coalitions. Our backpacks are filled with personal care items, high protein snacks, and information on where to get help. In 2020, we began distributing bulk food drops to our in-need veterans and their families through the VA Food Pantry. In 2021 our local VA Clinic asked us if we could help fill a need in our community. We were asked if we could provide tents and water filtration bottles for our Veterans who are losing their homes during the current housing crisis. Every year we provide a Merrier Christmas for local Military Families, who may be going through some difficult times. These families are recommended to us through the VA. As the mission evolves, Holiday for Heroes supports our military families at home, by giving them a Christmas filled with joy and less worries. In 2023, through the generosity of our donors, we have adopted 23 families. We provide all the necessary trimmings to make their Holiday Season a little bit brighter. ~ Chris Olson

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen... as some of you might have noticed, for the past few articles there has been a different writer. I asked Lesley Krause, one of our actors in the Entertainers, to fill in for me, and she did a wonderful job. It was good to hear a different voice speaking to the community. I enjoyed reading her articles as I am sure you all did. Thank you, Lesley, for being so helpful and creative. Now we are in November, and the Entertainers are in full swing. We have been in rehearsal for a month, and I am sure we are all getting better each time we rehearse. As a reminder to the community, we will be putting our play on stage Friday, March 8th, Saturday, March 9th, and Sunday, March 10th, 2024, so make sure to mark your calendar now to reserve that date. I know that you would hate to miss seeing your fellow Taraiates on stage presenting “DADDY’S GIRL.”

The Entertainers will be hosting the dessert table at the Craft Fair, held on Saturday, November 4th, in the Clubhouse. Be sure to stop by, and I am sure that you will find a tasty treat that you cannot resist. Lesley Krauss and Linda Kasdorf are the chairs of this event; be sure to stop by and see what goodies the Entertainers have prepared this year. For the Entertainers: Remember, we have a business meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 18th. We will meet as usual in the little Meeting Room shortly after coffee, which should be sometime after 9:00 AM. All are welcome to our meetings if you want to learn more about the Entertainers. “Without writers, stories could not be written. Without actors, stories could not be brought to life.” ~ Stella Adler Pat Dunning, Stage Manager Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com

NEW IMAGE CHORUS Did you know that singing is good for your health? Want to find out how? Join the New Image Chorus as they rehearse on Mondays from 12:30 – 2:30 PM. There are no tryouts. If you do not want to come alone, invite your friends. You will be given the words to the songs that the Chorus will be singing for our show in the spring. You may be surprised at the number of songs you already know. If you choose, you may have the

opportunity to sing a solo or a duet. Open enrollment is ongoing, and as it has been said about Mikey “he likes it.” I would like to thank Lesley Krauss for accepting the position of President of the New Image Chorus, as Belle and I are leaving Tara Woods. QUARTER AUCTION 4TH ANNUAL QUARTER AUCTION NOVEMBER 9, 2023 When: Thursday, November 9, 2023 TIME: DOORS OPEN AT 4:00 PM. GOODS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT 4:00 PM. AUCTION STARTS AT 5:30 PM. Paddles: $5.00 each (donation) Food: will be available for purchase Reservations contact Judy Girty at 513-702-6874 Questions contact Chris Olson at 715-851-4681 Tables will be set up to seat 8. When you make your reservation, please let us know how many will be at your table. We may have to add people if you have less than 8. Crafters – sue cook is accepting donations if you would like to donate some of your talented work. Also, gift cards are always welcome. I am also looking for volunteers to help with the auction. Please call me if you would like to help. It takes volunteers to make this a success. Thank you in advance. All proceeds from the Quarter Auction go to A Day of Caring. SPONSORED BY YOUR TWHOA. What the heck is a Quarter Auction? Well, it is a raffle-style auction, not a traditional auction. As a Quarter Auction participant, you’ll want to arrive at “doors open” time – bring a supply of quarters and your friends! We recommend a couple rolls of quarters. When you arrive, you’ll get your bid paddle. When you rent your paddle(s), a poker chip matching your paddle number(s) will go into a container used to draw winning numbers throughout the event. You will also have an opportunity to visit the individual vendor tables to register for door prizes. The vendors will also have cash and carry items for sale! When the auction begins, each auction item will be presented and “auctioned”, one by one. You will use your quarters and paddles to bid, but no fear! You do not try to out-bid others, but rather bid the requested number of quarters (typically 2-3) on the item for a chance to win that item! The retail value of the item determines the number of quarters required per paddle to bid. Once you toss the required number of quarters into bowls on the table and they are collected, you raise your paddle in the air. We will begin drawing numbers from the numbered chips matching the paddles. If the announcer calls your number and if you have placed the bid, you win! If the number called wasn’t played, numbers continue to be pulled until a number is called for someone who had bid and had their paddle in the air! Then, on to the next auction item. Bid on everything! A great way to potentially squirrel away items in your gift closet for that unexpected hostess, thank you, or birthday gifts. Usually there are 2 auction rounds with a break between 2 rounds – to make sure you’ve registered for the door prizes. The auction rounds are followed by the door prize round.

AED’S LOCATIONS If you’re wondering what an AED is – and why they seem to be located in most offices and public buildings, you’re not alone. In fact, because these devices are now commonly available, more people than ever before are curious about them. So – just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

NEW ENGLAND CLUB The New England Club is saddened by the loss of two longtime members, Rochy Beliveau and Una Bigelow. Rochy was an instrumental part of all of our party preparations, helping wherever he could, and always making sure the coffee pots were plugged in so coffee would be ready with dessert. Una was loved by all – always a sweet and cheerful disposition. Una will mostly be remembered for being the MVP of the women’s team at our last bean bag baseball game. Please come to the Clubhouse on Saturday, November 25th, and help decorate our beautiful New England Club Christmas tree, if you are able. Anyone who has any “New England” themed ornaments is welcome to bring them to hang on our tree (except Red Sox). On Saturday, December 9th, our Club will be hosting the Tara Woods Christmas Party. Our New England DJ, John’s Mobile Music, will be providing the music. Tickets are $6.00 per person, and go on sale on Saturday, November 11th. This is a huge undertaking for our Club; many helpers are needed. If you didn’t sign up to help at our Welcome Back Party, and would like to help, please contact Judy Machnicz. We need people to help set up (Saturday morning at 10:00), clean-up (Sunday morning at 10:00), and the invaluable “party ops” men. Please support our Club by helping on a committee and attending the party. Saturday, December 16th, is our New England Club Christmas party. We will be serving a halfrotisserie chicken and sides, coffee, and dessert. There will be fun “Christmassy” games, of course. The charge for this party is $5.00 per person, and you must pre-pay by Saturday, December 9th. There are no sign-ups. You can pre-pay Tuesdays before Bingo or at Saturday Morning Coffee, starting Saturday, November 11th. Hoping to see you all at everything! ~ Judy Machnicz, President, New England Club

We will be adding five new community residents to the roster, and we have five returning players from the 2022-23 season. Meet The Team Patricia Gless – I’ve been playing tennis for 40+ years. I like playing in the “ad” court, with my favorite position being at the net. At Siesta Bay I’ve played with Carol, Mary, Bonnie, Debbie and Patsy.

Bonnie Nagel – I started to play tennis after I retired, as I needed a new passion. I fell in love with tennis because it’s active, social, and makes me use my brain. I’m super excited about playing in Tara Woods with old and new friends. Fun fact: On a longevity documentary I was watching the other night, Dan Buettner, longevity and Blue Zone researcher, mentioned that tennis was the single most sport that promoted extended longevity among the older set. Mary Sandre – I have played three years on the team after a 35-year absence from the game. I enjoy the competition and the interaction between teammates and competitors. Debbie Doty – I started playing tennis 3-1/2 years ago when Tony Gless asked me to play. He gave me a quick hour lesson then sent me to practice with one of Siesta Bay’s women’s teams. I loved tennis from that first day! This is my second year playing with the Tara Woods Angels. The women here were very welcoming, and I enjoyed competing with other parks. Open play is also fun; the more skilled players are kind and make the game enjoyable. Linda Engel – I started playing on the Tara Woods women’s team for the 2010-11 season. There were a few years when Tara Woods had two women’s teams; I didn’t care for that, as I had to play against my friends who were on the other team. I prefer my backhand shot to my forehand shot, and I enjoy it when I can hit a winner down the alley. Continued on page 22

TENNIS NEWS - Continued from page 21

Mary Cauldwell – I started to play tennis in Fort Myers shortly after I retired 15 years ago. The main reason was to meet fun, active people, as I knew no one in our new winter community. Over the years, the tennis community became my winter family and my “forever” friends. As so many know, losing this part of life to Hurricane Ian was devastating. But I am lucky to have found great tennis players in Tara Woods who have already been so kind and so welcoming. Friendships mean more to me than winning, but, of course, I like to win! Watch out for my short-angled backhand. Priscilla Taylor – I have played county tennis for 20 years, followed by SWIFT for about 10 years. I was an Angel; I was a Devil...I’ve done the gamut. I love the shot down the middle. Patsy Pollard – I got my strength back after some physical challenges recently. I love the game, got out and played this summer, and I am raring to go. Tricia Martell – Racquetball was always my game till I started to winter in Florida. With only three-sided racquetball courts I switched my game to tennis! Last year was my first year of league play.

My favorite shot is returning the serve down the alley. Carol Cherry – I have played tennis for a few years. I have been on tennis teams and made some great friends. I am looking forward to playing with the Tara Woods girls! Our games will be played on Thursdays at 9:30 AM. The schedule will be out and posted by the tennis courts after our captains meeting which is scheduled for November 2nd. We hope you can join us in this exciting season of tennis! ~ Trish Martell ROUND ROBINS Now that most of our snowbirds are back, we want to remind all tennis players about our Round Robins and invite them to participate. These Round Robins are held on November 25th, (there is none in December), January 27th, February 24th, and March 23rd! It’s a fun-filled morning of tennis for all levels of play, followed by a lunch on the veranda with hamburgers, hot dogs, refreshments, and all the fixings! The festivities start at 9:00 AM. If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to me at 239-888-9135. ~ Greg Girard
