FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou TWHA Board of Directors Elections – by vote, the Board undid the COVID modified by-laws, and thereby we are returning to our regular by-laws. As a result, there are four director positions up for election in January. If you are interested in serving on the Board or would like to know more about it, please contact Peg Gamble, Nominating Committee/ Election Committee Chairperson, at 740-3044872 or email her at gamblepjx1@yahoo. com. You may also contact any Director for information. Upcoming events – November is a busy month here in Tara Woods. All events are highlighted here in The Columns, and on your www.twhoa.net website, as well as on the bulletin boards in the Clubhouse. It is a great time to see what your community has to offer – from a craft fair to a holiday safety tips seminar, to a veteran recognition pancake breakfast, and a quarter auction supporting our Tara Woods Day of Caring charities. Attend and enjoy the Tara Woods lifestyle. Safety – as more folks return for the season, it means more cars, more walkers, more golf carts, and more pet walkers on our roads, both day and night. Look out for your neighbors. Safety is everyone’s business. Make

a concerted effort to be a responsible walker and/or driver! Volunteers – virtually all that happens here in Tara Woods is the result of an army of volunteers working diligently behind the scenes to make it better for all of us. We all thank you!! If you would like to volunteer your time and/or talents to make our community even better, give me a call at 239-240-5847, or email to loudunning2@gmail.com. Giving thanks – Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 25th. Wherever we are, whatever we do, it is time to take a moment or more to give thanks for all our many blessings. HEADS UP – November is National Peanut Butter Lovers Month – so whether your choice is Jif or Skippy (or even a store brand), creamy or crunchy, be sure to spread peanut butter on everything this month. DID YOU KNOW THAT – your Tara Woods Homeowners Association has collaborated with Community Manager Angi to include ‘A Minute with the Manager’ on your Monday’s What’s Happening, to provide residents with up-to-date and accurate information here in Tara Woods. FMO NEWS By Stuart Berman TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

I know that as soon as I submit this article, I will receive information about any upcoming meetings. At the moment, all is quiet. Meetings normally start in November so watch the bulletin board in the back of the Clubhouse for any future meetings. You will also find applications and envelopes to mail in your membership paperwork. You can also join and renew online at www.fmo.org. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Belle Berman and Bill Parker for their attendance and support over the years. Like anything we do, it takes a team working together to get the information out to the community. Being a member of the FMO is like having an extension to your homeowner’s insurance. You hope you don’t have to use it, but it is nice to know that it is there in case of emergency. So, what can the FMO do for you? It provides information about protecting you and your possessions, particularly important as we enter the holiday season. Information about scams, telephone and email, the use of fire extinguishers, and many other bits of information are available to attendees at meetings and in the FMO Magazine. Window stickers are provided, so first responders are aware of pets or small children in your home. FMO works with our legislature to advise and provide assistance when bills are written that may have a negative impact on you. As we enter this holiday season, give the gift that keeps on giving: a three-year membership to FMO. For pennies a day it will give you the peace of mind that you are not alone – that someone in Tallahassee has your back. Wishing you and yours a very happy, healthy, and safe holiday season.

TO MY TARA WOODS FAMILY I can’t thank you enough for all the cards and expressions of sympathy I received on the sudden passing of George. At 83 years he outlived his own expectations. He truly loved Tara Woods and was always striving to make it a great place for everyone to enjoy. Your outpouring of

love and caring has been overwhelming and is very much appreciated. I am very fortunate to live in such a compassionate community. There’s no place like Tara Woods. Sincerely, Janet Daly

WAITING IN LINE Did your pizza arrive late or not as hot as you would like? Did Aunt Rose complain how long she had to wait at the gate? Was the delivery you were expecting NOT DELIVERED? Have you submitted your permanent guest list and is it current? The list goes on and on. With the holidays coming, AND ALL YEAR ROUND, whenever you are expecting a delivery, visit, or anything in between, it is important that you NOTIFY THE GATE. Please be mindful that the gate attendants have no idea who is coming to your house. When the X Y Z Roofing Company is at the gate and you haven’t called to say they are coming, it falls upon the gate attendant to contact you. If your phone number is not current and we can’t reach you, that vendor is not coming into Tara Woods. You are not going to be happy, and the vendor is not going to be happy. It’s amazing how many roofers and other professionals do not have their name or contact information on their vehicles. Aunt Rose is the third vehicle in line, and again the second vehicle was not expected because you did not notify the gate. Once again, the gate attendant has to go through the same procedure for each visitor: VERIFY THAT THEY ARE AUTHORIZED TO COME INTO TARA WOODS. How do I avoid this? The night before or first thing in the morning call

5

NOVEMBER 2021 Island Visitor Publishing

the gate at 239-731-1582 and tell them who is coming. Also make sure your permanent guest list is up-to-date. After you scheduled your food delivery or pizza order, don’t forget to call the front gate. If you have multiple members of the family with the same last name, just give them the last name. This will allow you more room for additional guests. For individuals on your permanent guest list, you do not have to notify the gate that they are coming. If you are having guests coming for several days or weeks, PLEASE call the office and get a visitor pass for them. Otherwise, you will have to call the gate every day to authorize them in. The only exception to the above are UPS, FedEx, U.S. Mail, Laser Ship, Amazon, pest control, lawn service and anything medical. The gate attendants want to make sure that all your visitors and deliveries get through the gate as quickly and safely as possible. Doing your part goes a long way to make this happen. Please remember, the gate attendants can only keep you safe if you help us help you. Remember WE ARE A TEAM. Thank you. Tara Woods Management

NEW IMAGE CHORUS The New Image Chorus is looking for members of the community who can’t read music, maybe sing in the shower or want to do something different on Monday afternoon. You don’t have to sing well or even learn the lyrics. We perform open book style. Most of the songs you already know or heard. We practice Mondays from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM through November, and then start up again in January. NO attendance is taken. You are here to have fun and spend time with your fellow neighbors. The most important thing is that singing is good for you. It exercises your lungs. I’m

not kidding; ask your doctor. We have a fantastic Choir Director, Dave Adams, who would provide you with insights on some of the songs we are singing and other tidbits. You are cordially invited to attend one of our rehearsals and see for yourself how much fun we have. Wait until you hear us warm up before we start practice each Monday. If you have questions, please contact Lou Cashin, Polly Brown or Stuart Berman. Thank you, Stuart Berman

IT’S SHOW TIME AGAIN! FINALLY, after all this time, Tara Woods Sound & Lighting is pleased to bring back some professional entertainment for residents’ enjoyment. Not only will we have our annual January show, but, to make up for the one missed last January, we have booked another great performance. That’s TWO shows this season.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27th, “MENTALMANIA” 7:00 PM

Mark Stone is a mentalist and does a comedy mindreading and ESP show. It runs about an hour and forty-five minutes in length. It’s funny, mindboggling and involves lots of audience participation. In other words, IT’S A VERY ENTERTAINING SHOW.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 15th, “THE GARY DELENA SHOW” 7:00 PM

Gary Delena is a triple-threat showman… a singing impressionist, an accomplished musician, and a comedian. His show mixes musical parodies, good-natured clowning, and the ability to befriend the room by simply chatting. He is funny, funny, funny! Tickets for the shows are $15.00 each per person and will be sold before BINGO on Tuesdays and during Saturday Morning Coffee, beginning about thirty days prior to show dates. Both theater seating in front of the stage and cabaret tables in back will be available. (Reservations are required for cabaret seating.) Watch for the posters in the Clubhouse.

Contact Polly Brown on her cell phone if you have questions or about reservations at 239-246-2391.

HELP NEEDED! Welcome back to all our Snowbirds. Now that the new season is upon us and the activities are getting back to almost normal after a horrendous 2020 – 2021 season because of COVID, it is good to see so many residents out and about and enjoying the Magic of Tara Woods. There are many of the Tara Woods Homeowners Association sponsored programs that need your help as we move to the new season. As people move on, whether they move or decide to let the “young folks” carry on tradition, we need volunteers to help with these programs. Volunteering is something I was always told not to do in the Army, however, here at Tara Woods it is the right thing to do. New homeowners or residents who have been at Tara Woods for a while, please contact me – Peter Krilivsky at 603-493-8891 and let’s see if we can find the right spot that helps us and fulfills your need to help. If you are a caring, resourceful leader we need you. The groups are: Neighbors Helping Neighbors; Neighborhood Watch; Certified Emergency Response Team (CERT); Rent Negotiations (compliance); New Resident Orientation; Meeting Set-up; Federation of Manufactured Homeowners (FMO) Contact me to discuss what group you might be interested in, and I would be happy to explain and answer any questions. As advertised, Tara Woods is an active, over 55 community, and what better way to stay active than to volunteer. These positions do not take a lot of time, so let’s all work together to keep the magic of Tara Woods alive!!! Peter Krilivsky, Director, Tara Woods Homeowners Association • 603-493-8891

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION We will hold our first meeting of the Tennis Association on Saturday, November 27th, at 10:30 AM at the tennis courts right after social tennis! All new and current members are encouraged to attend! Even though you might not plan to play tennis that morning, we encourage you to come out to the courts at 10:30 AM to hear what is planned for this upcoming season and to give us your thoughts on all tennis matters. – Ed Sandre and Greg Girard email gjg0014@gmail.com. OPEN TENNIS The “open mixed doubles tennis” is played every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. By now a lot of the snowbirds have returned to Tara Woods, and I’m sure there will be a lot more tennis players showing up to play on those days. All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts. If you have an interest in playing tennis, stop by the courts and check us out. TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League ~ White Team Last season (2020-2021) there was no competition between communities because of COVID-19. Now we have to put together a White Team that has aged in several ways. There are several illnesses and aging problems that have developed with some of the 20192020 team. Now we have to wait until the end of

941.312.0665

www.TWHOA.net

BE SURE TO CHECK THE TENNIS BULLETIN BOARD ON A REGLAR BASIS FOR UPDATED INFORMATION ON WHAT IS GOING ON WITH TENNIS ACTIVITIES. October to determine which team members can play and add new members if needed. Meanwhile, one of the communities we play against may not allow outsiders in their community, which would eliminate their participation in our league. That being said, we are in a period of reconstruction. So, we will do our best to generate a team, that is for sure. We will keep you posted as things develop. Please note that we play our matches on Tuesdays at 1:00 PM; come out and cheer us on. – Fred Puhlfuerst Blue Team Sad news for the Blue Team playing in the league. We do not have enough players to even field a single team. I talked to many of the old team members and they enjoyed TWIT last year and they would rather play TWIT than play in the league. Many of our players are getting older and they would rather not compete in the league. – Mike Renzulli Women’s League It is sad for me to report that there will not be a Women’s tennis team from Tara Woods for this upcoming 2021-2022 tennis season. Even though we initially had enough women sign up last spring for this season’s team, things have changed, and we now find ourselves with not enough Tara Woods women to field a team. There are a few of us who wanted to play in the league this season, but just not enough to make it feasible. So, as of this writing, there will not

be a Tara Woods Angels team in the women’s SWIFT league this season. As a side note, from information I have gathered on the history of the Tara Woods Angels – and reported here in the January 2021 issue of The Columns – the women’s team was organized in 1996 by Jane Maher. That is a long time to have a women’s team every year at Tara Woods – but now, unfortunately, there will not be an Angels team this season. – Linda Engel TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) Remember, if you’re interested in playing TWIT, be sure to sign up on the tennis bulletin board. – Mike Renzulli ROUND ROBINS Greg Girard is working on getting the Round Robins going again. They were generally scheduled on the fourth Sunday of the month in November, January, February, and March. Despite a low turnout of players last season, we are hoping to get more participation among our tennis players. Hopefully our newer tennis players in Tara Woods – and more of our current tennis players – will want to sign up and enjoy the fun of our Round Robins. Please check the bulletin board at the tennis courts for information on the upcoming Round Robins and a sign-up sheet for those interested in playing. Submitted by Linda Engel

FMO REPORT We will finally release our Legislative agenda for the 2021-2022 session. Our meetings with both the Director of the Department of Business and Professional Regulations (DBPR) (Division of Florida Condominiums, Timeshares, and Mobile Homes) and the Executive Director of Florida Manufactured Housing Association (FMHA) convinced FMO that we need to put some teeth into the Florida Mobile Home Act (Chapter 723 Florida Statutes). There are several areas of fines and penalties stated in the Statute regarding fines and penalties that the DBPR and courts can levy against violations of the Statute. It has been decades since these penalty amounts were instituted. The present amounts are indeed laughable and quite menial. We will pursue substantial changes in all the fine amounts listed in FS 723. One item, in particular, is to be highlighted as extremely important. When complaints are submitted by the residents of manufactures homes to DBPR, those items are reviewed. If the review is considered a possible violation, an investigator will be assigned to investigate the complaint(s). The Park owner is notified and asked to correct the item(s). If the park owner fails to act to the satisfaction of the investigator, a fine of $250.00 is issued to the park owner. That amount goes to DBPR. FMO is asking the Legislature to increase that fine to $2,500.00 for each confirmed violation listed on the complaint. Subsequent confirmed violations against the same park owner within three (3) years will receive a fine of $5,000.00 per violation. FMO feels that these changes will motivate DBPR to be more aggressive in handing

out penalties for continuing violations. We also hope that these increased amounts will add awareness to violations by park owners while encouraging residents to file multiple lists of complaints. Language is being drafted by Nancy Stewart. Once drafted, Nancy will pursue a House Sponsor and a Senate Sponsor to submit our proposed Legislation. Once that is completed, our package will go through Legislative Drafting and assigned Bill numbers. The Bills must then be heard and approved by three (3) Committees in EACH Legislative body (a total of six Committees) before going to the floor for a vote. If the Bill fails in just one Committee, the Bill is dead. You will be called on to help support this important Legislation and the continuation of our “Tie-Down” Legislation to be filed as a separate Bill. Membership: You have only November and December to be entered in our Promotion Campaign. In January, we will announce the winners of our contest. Simply recruit one new member to be entered for our drawing. Your name is entered for each new member recruited. GRAND PRIZE: NEW GOLF CART ($8,000 + VALUE) FIRST PRIZE: CRUISE OR $1,200 CASH SECOND PRIZE: $1,000 CASH THIRD PRIZE: $500 CASH Jesse James, Section IX Director Chairman, Political Advocacy Committee Spokesperson, “TEAM DBPR” 727-271-9565, jessejamesfmo@hotmail.com

PICKLEBALL Bounce-bounce, kitchen, 3-7-2, dink… Common language in Pickleball. If you are like I was three years ago, you may have heard of Pickleball, but you didn’t really know what it was. Well very briefly, it’s a game played on a court slightly smaller than a tennis court, a net slightly lower than tennis. It uses an enlarged ping pong paddle, a tennis ball sized wiffle ball, and requires an underhanded serve. And…is a lot of fun! If you have played any racket or paddle sports in the past, you will pick it up very quickly. If you haven’t, you can be enjoying the game in short order. We’ll provide the balls, have loaner paddles and plenty of people to give you advice! You just have to have comfortable sports clothes, and tennis shoes are a must. So come down to the courts and watch us and join the peanut gallery. Someone will be happy to explain what’s going on. If you’re ready to

learn, give Rich Breniser a call at 330-418-6461 or Bruce Lubich at 410-409-5873. We will set up FREE private lessons, to get you going. We currently have open play currently at 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, (times changes with the seasons). If enough people are interested in a more social/ less competitive play time, we may be able to make that happen. Ready, not sure, or already a part of our group, please join us for subs and chips at the Clubhouse November 10th, at 5:00 PM. Social time will be from 5:00-5:15 PM, then we’ll eat, have a short meeting and end with more social time. The cost is $5.00 per person and will cover sub platters, including veggies, and individual sized bags of chips. Bring your own beverage of choice. Please contact me by November 8th, with who and how many are coming. RSVP to Rich at: rbreniser@gmail.com

DAY OF CARING & QUARTER AUCTION The Day of Caring donation drive officially started the 1st of October. We will continue to take donations through the first of December. The three parks: Lake Fairways, Pine Lakes, and Tara Woods, have been giving a big check to all three charities just before Thanksgiving and Christmas so the charities can provide a little extra for the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Those Charities, again, are Catholic Charities, Wake Up America, and Fort Myers Rescue Mission. I will go into more detail on each of these charities in the next issue. But several of us have been to each of them, helped work with the Wake Up America crew, and can assure you they are wonderful charities with most of your donation going to help feed the needy. Donations are coming in. Drumroll please: as of October 9, we have $816.00. Please make payable to: A Day of Caring. Wonderful start!! If you did not get your Day of Caring letter and envelope in the October issue of The Columns, please let me know and I will get one to you, or I will have some by the window next to the donation box in the Clubhouse. This issue of The Columns will be about the Quarter Auction, which will be Thursday, November 11th, with doors opening at 4:30 PM, and the Auction starting at 6:00 PM. All proceeds,

except a very small amount for expenses, (last time, it was $13.00) goes to the three charities covered with the Day of Caring. There is some confusion as to what a Quarter Auction is. The Quarter Auction really is very easy once you see how it is done. Please save quarters, as you need them to get a chance to win one of the many auction items that will be available. Last year there were almost fifty items auctioned off. We have some tables available yet, but if you are planning to come, you best contact either Judy Girty at 513-702-6874, or myself, Chris Olson, at 715-851-4681, or Sheila Harris at 313-717-5627 soon. Call if there are a number of you, or if you are coming solo. We will find a great place for you to enjoy the auction. Don’t be afraid. You are all more than welcome. Why come early?? There will be a great food truck on the veranda for your meal, and the Great bakers in the Mid-Atlantic Club will have delightful bakery to tempt us all. Plus, you will want to see what all the vendors have to offer, and of course socializing is a favorite pastime here at Tara Woods. Hope to see you all there. So, Ladies and Gentlemen…November 2021, what is happening in Tara Woods? Lots! One of the best is that our rehearsals have begun. Janet Daly, our director, has worked out a schedule for all the actors and stand-ins; so please be prompt, be courteous, and know your spot on stage. If you cannot make a rehearsal that you are supposed to attend, please let me know ASAP so we can get a stand-in for you. To the community as a whole, it is not too early to mark your calendars for the second weekend in March to attend one of our productions. We will soon be in touch with Ron Proulx. Ron is the very nice gentleman who is the leader of the group that builds our sets. If you are interested in helping build our set, which will be done most likely the day after Valentine’s Day in 2022, please contact Ron and work out the details with him. The Monday following our last performance, this

same set will be taken down and put back into storage for the next year. This is another way to volunteer your time and talents in Tara Woods. Again, contact Ron Proulx if this interests you. After the building of the set, we will be looking at either painting or touching up the flats that were painted the first time we attempted to put this play on stage. If you are interested in painting or putting the finishing touches on the set, i.e., plants, vines, things hanging on the walls, hanging backdrops and the like, please contact me.

This ‘killing people with kindness’ is taking way longer than I expected. Pat Dunning, President of the Entertainers 239-240-5848, pdunning46@gmail.com

GARDEN CLUB CRAFT FAIR Saturday, November 6th, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. All the crafters will be from Tara Woods Come out and see the talent; come buy a Christmas present or just a gift for yourself this year – you definitely deserve one. And please buy a raffle ticket to support the Garden Club (buy one and get one free if you have on your name badge). And of course lunch by Bill Black & Friends to support the flag fund (the wonderful way we remember those people who served so we could have our freedom). OPEN Only to Tara Woods residents. FREE COOKIES AND COFFEE (while supplies last). And a RAFFLE for a $25.00 PUBLIX gift card (you do not have to be present to win). Any Garden Club members who would like to volunteer to help, or if you are not a member and wish to help, please contact Carol Shields at 239-731-0481. The decision to keep it open ONLY to Tara Woods residents was not done lightly. It was felt that it would create an unwarranted risk to the health and safety of our residents to attract a large crowd to mingle in a confined environment, largely unregulated with regard to face masks and vaccinations. Hopefully everyone understands. A reminder: as previously voted on, the Fashion Show that is usually in November has been rescheduled for April 8th, 2022. For anyone who likes to keep up with fashions, New York Fashion week is free online. NYFW.Com And Razzle Dazzle (Cape Coral) is open with new fashions. You can look online for them; and if you’re shopping, don’t forget to tell Cathy or her staff that you are from Tara Woods.

The Garden Club wishes everyone a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Rachelle DellaRocca 239-322-6386

What to plant

Bedding Plants: Create a display of fall colors with cool season plants. Some to try are impatiens, strawflower, cape daisy, and pansy. Bulbs: Many bulbs like to get their start in cool weather. Bulbs to plant this month include amaryllis, crinum, and the many varieties of elephant’s ear. Herbs: Continue planting herbs from seeds or plants. A wide variety of herbs like cooler, dryer weather, including cilantro, dill, fennel, parsley, sage, and thyme. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops such as beet, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, kale, and lettuce.

planted in the landscape. This pest can quickly defoliate a plant; handpick or treat only the area infested. Lawns: This is a great time to plant ryegrass to cover bare patches in the lawn. Excerpts from University of Florida Gardening Calendar

What to do

Perennials: Divide and replant overgrown perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs now so that they establish before the coolest weather arrives. Fungal disease: Until May, watch for brown patch and large patch, fungal diseases that cause areas of grass to turn brown. Since treatment is difficult, prevention with proper cultural practices is key. Scale on ornamental plants: Now that temperatures are lower, use dormant oil sprays to control scale insects. Irrigation: Plants need less supplemental watering in cooler weather. Turn off systems and water only if needed. Fertilization and Irrigation Needs of Florida Lawns and Landscapes. Poinsettias: Watch for hornworms on poinsettias

SHILOH SPEAKS Ah! Autumn is here, and now we can finally enjoy a break from this unseasonably “HOT WEATHER”. First of all, I want to remind all of you to be sure to set your clocks back one hour on Sunday,November 7th – great! I was looking forward to receiving an extra hour of sleep. Zzz. Also, be sure to check your air filters and the batteries in your smoke alarms. It’s a great habit when time changes come about. Anyway, even though our snowbirds (Welcome Back) may love this warm weather, those of us who are fulltime Floridians would like a change of pace, and see leaves change, and the break in the heat. Can anyone see or feel a happy medium to all this? Oh well, in this segment of “Shiloh Speaks”, remember Thursday, November 11th, in recognition of our armed forces. Veterans Day is a commemoration of the end of hostilities in 1918 and 1945, and observed as a legal holiday in the U.S. to honor all of our Veterans. Words to describe these men and women could include appreciation, armistice, commitment, courageous, heroic, devotion, legendary and so many more. So, if you know a veteran, or just to observe this special day, go down to the Card Room in the Tara Woods Clubhouse and see our list of Veterans who have served our country past and present. November is the celebration of our First Big Holiday (I love the most) Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in the month, which this year falls on the 25th. Can you imagine if Ben Franklin declared our national bird the turkey instead

of the bald eagle? We would be sitting down eating a hamburger or a well-made meatloaf or ham. Anyway, “Happy Thanksgiving Everyone”. Hopefully, we can all have a safe and healthy day with friends and family since we lost most of it last year with COVID. Another way of saying traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for all the sacrifice and hard work done for the harvest. Well, my time is up for this month’s segment of “Shiloh Speaks”. Pick up after us because it’s your Tara Woods too. Help keep it clean and beautiful. See you next month. Happy Tails,Shiloh A reminder: Time doesn’t wait for anyone. Not to brag or anything, but I can forget what I’m doing while I’m doing it.

JOIN THE BOCCE LEAGUE For fun and camaraderie! Everyone welcome! Every Tuesday at 3:30 pm. Call Rudy Diaz if you have any questions: 239-347-7934 No commitment, just show up! Teams assigned weekly,

SPORTS, EXERCISE, and ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES Thank you to everyone who signed up and volunteered to help with the Halloween Party. It would not have happened if you didn’t step up. I think everyone had a good time and the costumes were terrific. Thanks for making the party even more fun. Looking ahead to December, put Wednesday, December 8th, on your calendar for the Christmas Golf Cart Parade. Gather at the Clubhouse parking lot at 5:00 PM. This is the time to share whatever Christmas cheer you wish to share in the form of goodies, beverages, etc., as well as Christmas greetings. The parade starts at 6:00 PM. In an effort to cover every street in the community, please do not offer goodies on the parade route. You are urged to be in your driveway to watch the parade and offer Merry Christmas greetings to your friends and neighbors. At this time, I am not sure if there will be Caroling at the Clubhouse following the parade. Watch for that information on the bulletin board and the TWHA website.

To stay informed of events in Tara Woods:

The Tara Woods Community Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, December 11th, hosted by the Midwest Club. There should be information in this issue of The Columns, but watch the bulletin board and website for details. The New Year’s Eve Party on Friday, December 31st, will be hosted by the MidAtlantic Club. The poster for that party should be up by the end of November in the Clubhouse with all the details available. Because of COVID, I was not able to hold the annual meeting of Club/group Presidents usually held in March. At this meeting, it is decided which clubs/ groups will be hosting the various parties throughout the year, and important information regarding hosting these events is distributed. That meeting is now scheduled for Saturday, November 13th, at 9:00 AM in the Clubhouse. If you are a Club/group President or representative, please plan to attend this meeting, which will start promptly at 9:00 AM. It is important that you attend, especially if

TAI CHI IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning Tuesday, October 5th, Tai Chi classes meet the same days, Tuesday and Thursday, but at a new time 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. The time change is necessary to accommodate The Entertainers group. Tai Chi classes continue and are going strong in Tara Woods. A dedicated group of residents continued practice through the summer, under the patient and supportive guidance of our incredible instructor, Tony Fettig. Tai Chi students have progressed through the first twenty-four movements of the 108 movement set. As we head into full “season”, we look forward to welcoming back our snowbirds who began classes with us in April, as well as any newbies who would like to begin Tai Chi. Tony will help you get caught up with the rest of the class. Not familiar with Tai Chi? Here’s some info so you can decide if Tai Chi is right for you. When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, six of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week. How do I sign up for classes? Who do I contact with questions? We ask that you sign up for classes. Contact Barbara Werner-Lubich, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 410-409-5874, Email: barbara.wernerlubich@gmail.com OR Deb Nespolo, Tara Woods resident: Phone: 401-309-1136, Email: debra.nespolo@gmail.com. What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing.

Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you. What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally. What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation. Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit. Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable. Just want to try outTai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club suspended its meetings with the start of the COVID restrictions in March 2020. I am planning to resume on the first Thursday of December (December 2nd), if nothing goes wrong before then. Free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods will be held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer but may have to be shortened to finish by the end of the season. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. We will spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered will always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. You can attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something

to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I have continued to provide my normal services in the park. I give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 239-652-0488. Please continue to be careful and stay healthy. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH by Sam Topping CALL VAUGHN OR BOB 508-889-3869 VAUGHNWEDGE1@GMAIL.COM

“Do not resent growing old; many are denied the privilege.”

Work with life partner to achieve mutual goals

When you and your life partner work together to achieve your important long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement lifestyle, the experience can be greatly rewarding. However, your success will require commitment and discipline. So, what steps should you take along the way? One key move is to decide early in your relationship how you will handle money. Many couples merge their finances and make joint decisions on major purchases. But some couples like to keep at least part of their finances distinct, perhaps by maintaining separate checking or savings accounts. There’s really no one correct solution for everyone, but whatever you decide, you’ll want to be assured that all the bills will be paid and that neither one of you feels the pressure of an unfair financial burden. Here’s another suggestion: Try to avoid keeping financial secrets from your partner. That means disclosing your debts, hidden funds or uncommon investments. These types of surprises can lead to difficulties and mistrust. Even if you’re entering the relationship carrying something like a heavy student loan, it’s best to get it out in the open right away so, together, you can strive to gradually eliminate it. Of course, there’s also a practical side to not keeping secrets. Your large student loan could affect your credit rating – an issue that may arise when you and your partner are seeking a mortgage or some other type of loan. Clearly, you both should be aware of this potential stumbling block before you begin the application process. Now, let’s consider your investments. You each may have your own IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, but you might also share a joint investment account. However, you might not share the same risk tolerance – perhaps one of you tends to be more aggressive, willing to take more risks in exchange for potentially higher returns, while the other is more conservative, preferring to keep down the risk level of a portfolio, even if it means lesser capacity for growth. Again, neither you nor your partner is necessarily “right” or “wrong” in your views on investing – and nobody’s feelings about risk should be ignored. But once you’ve clearly identified your retirement goals and estimated their cost, you may find that compromise is possible. In other words, perhaps the conservative partner will realize that a too-cautious approach could hinder progress toward the desired retirement goal, while the partner who focuses on maximum growth will learn that a somewhat less aggressive approach can still yield the desired results. This type of compromise may affect the investment choices you make in your individual accounts as well as your joint accounts. And the way you choose your investments may even change over time, especially if your financial goals evolve. Ultimately, communication is the key. As long as you’re talking to each other and openly expressing your wishes and concerns, you and your partner can find a way to keep moving toward your mutual goals.
