FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou
As many of you know, your Tara Woods Homeowners Association Board of Directors meet 12 months a year with all Directors attending. It is important that the work of the Association continues throughout the year without interruption. You can view the minutes of the Board meetings on the website (www.twhoa.net) under the tab Board & Membership meeting minutes. Your Homeowners Association also meets officially once each month with the Community Manager at an agenda-driven meeting to discuss residents’ concerns and community improvement opportunities. This forum provides open discussions and follow-up. The minutes of these meetings can be viewed on your TWHOA website under the tab Community Improvement.
Communicating with and getting information from your Homeowners Association has never been easier. Your TWHOA website, as we have already discussed, not only provides an array of information but also has methods to contact the Community Manager and the HOA President – the Resident Concern Form can be found under TWHOA online forms and the Contact Us Form.
Another recent innovation is the periodic ‘A Minute with the Manager’ section introduced through the HOA and with the cooperation of Community Manager Angi to provide timely, accurate, and direct information from the Manager. Members have full access to the website.
No computer – no problem. Check out our outstanding issues of The Columns newspaper delivered to your door
monthly by a dedicated group of volunteers. Try Saturday Morning Coffee which includes a short (about 15 minutes) sharing of what is happening. See and talk with one or more of the Directors who are always at Saturday Morning Coffee.
Pick up a printed copy of the Resident Concern Form right at the HOA office in the Clubhouse. Check the bulletin boards for valuable information. Attend the monthly evening meetings of your Homeowners Association.
HEADS UP – We have an ongoing extensive list of ideas from residents to share with the Community Manager of things we would like to see added to the CAPX list for the future. While we cannot guarantee that all our suggestions will happen, we do have the opportunity to present them to the management. If there is something that you feel would be a great asset to the whole community, let me know; I will check, and if it is not already there, we will then add them to our future and ongoing conversation list.
DID YOU KNOW – There are over 55 clubs, groups and activities that go on here in Tara Woods. Your Homeowners Association is sponsoring an Opportunity Fair for all residents on Saturday, January 28th, 2023, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM in the Clubhouse. This is your opportunity to visit with representatives from all the Best of Tara Woods. Check it out!

THE NORMA HAND BRILL,
ENTERTAINING NEWS
So, Ladies and Gentlemen… October does not only bring the fall colors out, but it also brings the actors out of hiding from where they have been studying their lines which leads to this…
Notice to all Entertainers members… October is the start of rehearsals, remember, at 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Please arrive before our start time of 9:00 AM. Our first one is on Monday, October 3rd, and it is a read-through. Everyone please come; this includes stand-ins. The rest of the dates either have been sent to you by Janet, or she will give you a copy at that time. All interested in the Entertainers are welcome to attend.
I am sure that Janet, our director, will be contacting all of you as a reminder. NOTICE: be prepared for a read-through for the first rehearsal, October 3rd, by bringing your script, a pencil and extra writing paper for additional notes.
I will not be at the first rehearsal so I will give my reminders now:
• Be on time. The 9:00 AM start does not mean show up at 9:00 AM; it means ready to go on stage at 9:00 AM.
• Be sure to always be courteous and respectful of others.
• Be prepared with your blocking (where to move and when.)
• Take notes with a pencil when changes are made; don’t rely on your memory.
• Inform Pat (me) if you will be missing any rehearsals so we can get a stand-in.
• If you have any issues or problems, let me or Janet know, and we will address the issue.
Janet will have the schedule for the year so you may plan your appointments accordingly in the months ahead. She will have the contact list
of the cast and crew. If you need either of these let her know.
On another note, the Entertainers Business Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 15th, in the little Meeting Room in the Clubhouse following Saturday Morning Coffee, about 9ish. (The meeting is changed since I cannot make the regularly scheduled date of the second Saturday. Sorry, I will be in Vienna, Austria on that date.) All are welcome to attend, whether or not currently in the Entertainers. I look forward to seeing you of all.
As you can all see, we have selected our plays for the 2023 Season. Those who are new, we put on a play the second weekend in March each year for the community’s benefit and enjoyment. I know you will not want to miss the opportunity to see your fellow Tara-ites on stage.
Our play this year is two plays, each one act, and still as entertaining as usual. One will be Help Desk. A comical look at when you call in for help with a problem and what really happens on the other end of the phone. I believe that we all might have been there at one point or another. The next one is The Great Nursing Home Escape. We are familiar with this age group, and it is a very funny play about a group of bored seniors and the trouble they get into when left ‘alone to one’s own devices’ for too long.
Please keep one of the days on the second weekend in March free, because we would love to see you in our audience and hear you laughing along with the community.

We have life insurance, automobile insurance, and homeowner’s insurance, to name a few. Indirectly, being a member of the FMO is like an insurance policy. Only this policy protects you and your lifestyle a little differently. Let me explain.
When you join the FMO, $25.00 per year or three years for $65.00, you get a voice in Tallahassee. The FMO has a full-time lobbyist in Tallahassee who looks out and works to protect the lifestyle of those of us who live in Tara Woods.
Several years ago, the Legislature was looking for additional funding and proposed a 7% monthly sales tax on your lot rent. Think about that. You do the math. Our representative caught wind of this and, with your support and the rest of the FMO membership, defeated the proposal.
Bingo parlors in the surrounding area periodically try to curtail bingo in our communities. Thanks again, the FMO has been
there to stop it. FMO is the primary Florida membership organization representing Florida Manufactured Home Owners. FMO helped pass legislation to require Citizens Insurance Company to cover mobile home attachments (sheds and carports).
FMO has recently placed a board member on a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) committee in Washington, DC, with focus on manufactured homes and so much more.
This is not a “let my neighbor do it”. It is important that every family living in Tara Woods becomes a member of the FMO. How many times have elections been determined by just a handful of votes. YOUR MEMBERSHIP IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THAT OF YOUR NEIGHBORS. Every member counts. Every vote counts.
Applications and envelopes are on the back bulletin board. Thank you for your support of the FMO.

TARA WOODS SALES CORNER
I just celebrated my one-year anniversary working in the Tara Woods Sales Office. We have had countless successes and I couldn’t have done it without you! Now I am ready to set records and would love your continued support! We are currently looking for any pre-owned home in any condition.
In my first four months with Tara Woods (September –December 2021), I acquired and sold sixteen brokered homes. So far this year, I’ve acquired and sold twenty-nine. I have sold every home I’ve been honored to list for residents, in record time at the best price possible! I’ve got a proven track record at Tara Woods that I’m proud of, and great customers who have entrusted the sale of their home to me.
Do you have a fixer upper? Great! Do you have an older home in good condition? Perfect! Do you have a newer home in the newer neighborhood? Yes please! We have a huge waiting list for homes in all price ranges and you’d be surprised to see how much you can get for yours! If for some reason you feel that you need to use an outside realtor, please make sure that you are getting top dollar for your home and that it will sell quickly, like it would if you went through our on-site Sales Office. We will happily give you a second quote at no cost with absolutely no obligation.
Please don’t forget that every new client who is shopping for a home in Tara Woods will be given an informative tour of our wonderful community and shown into your home every time, every day, until it is sold. That is all we do. Plain and simple. And…how does an outside realtor know our Tara Woods market? They are all one of kind so there is no typical comparison chart. Is a good guess truly good enough for you?
I thank you in advance for choosing your Tara Woods Sales Office if or when you need to sell your little piece of paradise. It is our pleasure always! Your purchasers will thank you too!
~ Janet MarckFROM THE SCHEDULER
If you are the leader of a group, have you reserved the Clubhouse/facilities for the coming season, September 1st – August 31st, 2023? Most of you have, but space is filling up fast.
For anyone who wants to use the main Clubhouse, adjoining rooms, Veranda, etc. for an event or meeting, please fill out the Clubhouse Reservation Request Form available under the HOA bulletin board in the Clubhouse. There are two versions: one for a single event and one with a calendar on the back for reserving multiple dates. Attached to these forms is a Hometown America Clubhouse Rules and Reservation Request form that must be filled out also (just the top right corner). All the paperwork is returned to me at 2590 Tara Blvd. I now have a box on my front steps, guarded by my goose, which can be used to drop things off, instead
CERAMICS
Visit Tara Woods Ceramics on Facebook to see our local talent. The Ceramics Room is located next to the Tennis Courts. Beginners and experienced crafters are welcome. Mondays at noon there are members busy at work. Stop by for a look. Individual lessons are available upon request.
of walking all the way to my side door in the screen porch. These forms are also available on the HOA website, twhoa.net, and can be sent electronically directly to me.
If you have any questions about reserving facilities in the community, please give me a call or email. It has been very helpful to know where and when events are being planned, not only for the Event Calendar, but to avoid several events being held at the same time.
I also ask that you have patience as the busy season approaches and meetings/events occur back-to-back. You are asked to leave the area as clean as you found it, so working together for a smooth transition of events is important.
Thank you for your cooperation.

SAVE THE DATE
Do you remember the Age of Aquarius? Heard it Through The Grapevine that the New England Club is hosting a 60’s, 70’s and 80’s dance/party on Saturday, November 12th! It would be really groovy, far out, and way cool for you to be there.
What was your favorite? The sixties with the tie-dye craze, tunics, culottes, western shirts, straight leg pants or miniskirts? And the beehive hairdos with plenty of bows. And don’t forget the fishnet stockings we use to wear, ladies. Maybe you remember going to the drive-in movies and hooking the speaker on your car window to see Psycho, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or Spartacus.
Or maybe you were more into the seventies. Debby Boone had a #1 hit with You Light Up My Life, while Don McLean had us trying to figure out the meaning of American Pie. Disco took the country by storm as did John Travolta in the unforgettable Saturday Night Fever.
Women tried to walk in platform shoes, while both men and women were right in style in some pretty wide bell bottoms. Short shorts and crop tops were among the favs with the girls, while our dates may have donned a long-collared shirt, a vest and don’t forget the Leisure Suits! Date night might have found us at the movies
watching The Godfather, Rocky or American Graffiti.
If you rocked the eighties, then you probably wore some stirrup or parachute (M.C. Hammer) pants. Track suits were hugely popular by then in polyester, terry cloth and of course velour. Denim jeans with bleach spots were cool while we danced to Olivia Newton-John’s Physical, or Michael Jackson’s Thriller. We Are The World was a number one hit for four solid weeks! Bon Jovi burst onto the scene in 1983 and Motley Crue in 1981. If movies were more to your liking, maybe you saw E.T., Police Academy, or, for the brave-hearted, Nightmare on Elm Street.
Tickets for this fun-filled night will go on sale Tuesday, October 11th, before Bingo and remain on sale through November 5th at Saturday Morning Coffee. Tickets are $8.00 per person. A delicious dessert will be served. Prizes will be awarded for those who choose to dress from the decades we are celebrating.
Table reservation sheets will be available under the poster at the Clubhouse. Tickets must be purchased to reserve a table. Music will be provided by John’s Mobile Music from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. Please BYOB and snacks. Be there or be square, man.

Should you stick with index-based investments?
You may have heard that you can simplify your investment strategy just by owning index-based or passive investments. But is this a good idea? You’ll want to consider the different aspects of this type of investment style.
To begin with, an index-based investment is a vehicle such as a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that mimics the performance of a market benchmark, or index — the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and so on. (An ETF is similar to a mutual fund in that it holds a variety of investments but differs in that it is traded like a common stock.) You can also invest in index funds that track the bond market. Index investing does offer some benefits. Most notably, it’s a buy-and-hold strategy, which is typically more effective than a market-timing approach, in which individuals try to buy investments when their prices are down and sell them when the prices rise. Attempts to time the market this way are usually futile because nobody can really predict when high and low points will be reached. Plus, the very act of constantly buying and selling investments can generate commissions and fees, which can lower your overall rate of return. Thus, index investing generally involves lower fees and is considered more tax efficient than a more active investing style.
Also, when the financial markets are soaring, which happened for several years until this year’s downturn, index-based investments can certainly look pretty good — after all, when the major indexes go up, index funds will do the same. Conversely, during a correction, when the market drops at least 10% from recent highs, or during a bear market, when prices fall 20% or more, index-based investments will likely follow the same downward path.
And there are also other issues to consider with index-based investments.
For one thing, if you’re investing with the objective of matching an index, you may be overlooking the key factors that should be driving your investment decisions — your goals and your risk tolerance. An index is a completely impersonal benchmark measuring the performance of a specific set of investments — but it can’t be a measuring stick of your own progress.
Furthermore, a single index, by definition, can’t be as diversified as the type of portfolio you might need to achieve your objectives. For example, the S&P 500 may track a lot of companies, but they’re predominantly large ones. And to achieve your objectives, you may need a portfolio consisting of large- and small-company stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments.
(Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can give you more opportunities for success and can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee profits or prevent all losses.)
Ultimately, diversifying across different types of investments that align with your risk tolerance and goals — regardless of whether they track an index — is the most important consideration for your investment portfolio.
Use this idea as your guiding principle as you journey through the investment world.

Your group, club, or activity leader has been notified about this. They have the form to reserve a spot. If you have not been contacted, call Celia Blotkamp at 707-8632973 and she will make sure that your group has the information and reservation form.

TENNIS
TENNIS ASSOCIATION
I can’t believe the summer has gone by and we are going to have a new tennis season in a few short weeks. I hope everyone will be able to join us for open tennis at 9:00 AM on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level and you can join us on any of the days.
Also, look for the Round Robins which will be held monthly starting in November. ~ Ed Sandre
OPEN TENNIS
The “open mixed doubles tennis” continued during the summer months – sometimes with just enough players to make a foursome on one court. But, now that the snowbirds will be returning to Tara Woods in the coming months, I’m sure there will be a lot more tennis players showing up to play.
Feel free to join us on the tennis courts every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. All skill levels are welcome. If you have an interest in tennis, stop by the courts and check us out.
TENNIS LEAGUES: Men’s League White Team – Stallions
On Tuesday, November 8th, the White League will start their new season. This year brings a few exciting changes, with a second White Team from Tara Woods joining the league. I know everyone appreciated the support that the residents showed for our home games and I hope that we can field as competitive a team as last
season. Hope to see everyone there soon. ~ Ed Sandre White Team – Mustangs
The Mustangs have moved to the North Ft. Myers White League this year after a successful year in the Blue League in 2021-22. Our first league match will be at home on Tuesday, November 8th, against the Pine Lakes Racqueteers. All home matches are slated to start at 1:30 PM and usually last 2 to 2½ hours. We are looking forward to competing again against teams from the surrounding communities. We invite everyone to come to the courts and support our team. We are proud to represent the Tara Woods community. ~ Roger Rafferty
Blue Team – Tigers
I hope that we will have enough players to complete the team so that Tara Woods will be represented in the Blue League. I will be the Captain and Gene Dickie will be the Co-Captain. If you are interested in playing tennis on the Blue League Tigers team, you can get in touch with me by email at francoisneveu50@icloud.com or you can call Gene Dickie at 651-238-8368. We would encourage any of you who are even a little interested in playing on the team to contact one of us. Thank you. ~ Frank Neveu
Women’s League: Women’s Team – Angels
After we missed the past two years playing in the SWIFT tennis league for women, I am pleased that Tara Woods will be able to field a team for the 202223 season. We currently have the minimum number of
full-time players and a few subs. If anyone is interested in participating, it is not too late. There is a signup sheet on the tennis bulletin board. If you require more information, feel free to contact me at msandre@mnsi. net. Thanks. ~ Mary Sandre
TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis)
As we get ready to return to Tara Woods, we are planning tennis leagues and TWIT for next year. Having TWIT available will depend on the number of players we can recruit – since the men’s league and the possibility of the women participating in a league might deplete the number of participants in TWIT.
When we all return to Tara Woods, we can poll the players about continuing TWIT. ~ Mike Renzulli

The flowers of summer are all in bloom and nature is at its fullest. We hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful season.
Soon fall will be here and we all know its fall in Tara Woods because the license plates start to change colors! Carol Shields, the Club’s President, and its members have many wonderful events planned for this season, which we are sure you will enjoy. The full schedule will be posted at a later date. Also, please check out our beautiful Butterfly Garden, near the Gazebo. We are extremely grateful and sincerely thank Diane West and her committee for all their weed pulling and hard work.

The first event on the schedule of the Garden and Nature Club is the Craft Fair, on Saturday, November 5th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Refreshments will be served by different clubs. This year the Craft Fair will be open to the public and outside vendors will be invited to come. If you are
a crafter, work hard now so you have numerous crafts to display and sell. As you know, the talent in Tara Woods is amazing!

The Tara Woods Computer Club has ended its offseason lessons for the year. We will meet again on the first three Thursdays in November (11/3, 11/10, and 11/17) in the Card Room of the Clubhouse at 10:30 AM. The purpose of these preliminary meetings will be to discuss the topics we will cover during the upcoming winter season, and to answer any general computer questions you may have.
We will not be meeting between Thanksgiving and Christmas (everyone is too busy at that time of year),
DAY OF CARING
Tara Woods is a very giving community. For those of you who have been here a few years, you know that. We have many ways for us to give to those less fortunate than us. For the new residents, The Day of Caring is one of the ways you can be a part of the “Magic of Tara Woods.” It was started over twentyfive years ago with three parks getting together for a common cause. Pine Lakes, Lake Fairways, and Tara Woods picked three charities they helped locally. The last few years, the charities have been:
The Fort Myers Rescue Mission that presently provides housing and services to ninety residents, many were homeless, who are required to seek outside employment and to do work on the premises.
Catholic Charities Our donation goes to Elizabeth
and our first regular Computer Club lesson will be on Thursday, January 5th. As in previous seasons, the first and third Thursday will cover Computer Basics, the second and fourth Thursday will be more Advanced Topics selected by the members, and the fifth Thursday (if any) will be for General Questions and Answers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you.
Kay Galeana Center of Catholic Charities in Fort Myers. It goes to their food kitchen which helps feed over seven thousand men, women, and children each month.
Wake Up America that provides daily distribution of excess food from several markets to local food pantries. The food is distributed by residents of Lake Fairways and Pine Lakes each day.
I have been to each of these charities. I like to know my money is going to a good cause and only to that cause, not a big chunk in a CEO’s pocket. These three charities are excellent; you can be assured your money is being used wisely.
You will find in this issue of The Columns, a letter from A Day of Caring with an envelope attached. This
Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 239-652-0488. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. ~ Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor
is for donations that can be mailed to Chris Olson, 19567 Cotton Bay (address is on envelope), or put in the donation box in the Clubhouse, or handed to any Board member. All checks should be made out to The Day of Caring, Inc. Cash is also appreciated.
AND the best news; we are having our third Quarter Auction on Thursday, November 10th, at the Clubhouse. Those of you who went to our other Quarter Auctions know how much fun it was. 99% of the money raised went to A Day of Caring.
There is another article in The Columns about the Quarter Auction. For more information on either the Day of Caring or The Quarter Auction, you can contact me. Chris Olson 715-851-4681 either call or text. Thanks much.
THE MAGIC OF TARA WOODS ABOUNDS BUT IT NEEDS A LITTLE HELP
A coalition made up of Vicki Hoard and Company, the MidAtlantic Club, and the Neighbors Helping Neighbors group, is planning to provide a holiday meal and fellowship for the special needs residents, the elderly, those who are alone with no local family, or homebound residents during the Christmas season. This would take place on Sunday, December 18th, at 1:00 PM in the Clubhouse, and will be funded by Hometown America.
However, this partnership needs your help to identify those residents who would like to take advantage of this outreach. It is a challenge to identify them, so if you personally qualify or know of someone who may qualify for the meal, please contact one of the following persons, in order that a comprehensive list can be compiled, and invitations sent.
• Vicky Hoard 330-697-4630
• Judy Brda 239-731-1797
• Claire Schwinn 847-602-3390
You can also nominate a qualifying resident using the sign-up sheet under the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Poster found in the Clubhouse.
It is understood that not all the residents who qualify for the event are capable of making it to the Clubhouse. Meals will be delivered to the homebound and a shuttle service will be made available to residents who need transportation to the Clubhouse.
The Magic of Tara Woods has nothing to do with the physical property of the community and all its amenities. It is the people and groups that reach out and provide fellowship and help to all the residents. Please take the time to contact one of the above persons to take advantage of this opportunity, or to let them know of someone who would benefit greatly from this outreach. Help make the holiday season special for those who may not have the chance to experience the Magic of Tara Woods.
Thank You, Peter Krilivsky
Director, Tara Woods Homeowners Association
