HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR

Del Tura Holiday Craft Fair 2025 by Del Tura Craft Fair Committee

We are pleased to announce that the 2025 Del Tura Holiday Craft Fair will be held on Friday, November 7th from 5PM to 7PM and Saturday, November 8th, from 9AM to 2PM. Once again, the entire month of April will be open for vendor registration to Del Tura residents only. If you are interested in being a vendor at the craft fair, grab your spot now, because on May 1st we will be sending an email with registration and guideline forms to all former outside vendors to fill the remaining spots. Please send an email to delturacraftfair@yahoo.com with your name, address, phone # (a phone # that we can easily reach you, if needed), and email address requesting craft fair registration and guideline forms to be emailed to you. Also, there will be copies of the 2025 registration and guideline forms at the HOA office, as well as on the first table in the Starlight Ballroom.

Remember registration for the fair is a first come, first served event, which means we must receive your completed & signed forms, along with your payment, in order to be considered registered.

The Del Tura Craft Fair is considered one of the best in our area, and we would never be able to do it without our amazing volunteers. If you are interested in being a volunteer please send an email to delturacraftfair@yahoo.com providing your name, email address and phone number or sign up at Tuesday Coffee and let us know what area you would like to help with. We are looking forward to 2025 being another fantastic craft fair!

VETERAN’S CORNER

My father wasn’t big on advice, but he did give me some when I entered military service. “Don’t fight or gamble,” he said, “because you never know who the other guy is.” I took that advice to heart, for the most part and it served me well, for the most part.

After rehabbing some wounds sustained in Vietnam, I was assigned to Ft. Dix, NJ as the Non-Commissioned Officer-inCharge (NCOIC) of the gym. My duties included the scheduling and conduct of various tournaments. I organized basketball leagues, golf tourneys, and tennis championships. One of the lesser-known events was the annual badminton tournament. When I saw that on my schedule, I got a little chuckle. Who played badminton? I thought I only knew the game as a picnic activity, not a sport. I was in the process of setting up the nets for the four courts we would use when a rather unlikely looking soldier came in. His fatigues were shiny. His hat didn’t quite fit. His glasses looked like the lenses could use sunlight to roast ants. And he couldn’t have weighed more than a hundred pounds. I could hardly wait to hear what this kid wanted.

“Sergeant, I’d like to sign up for the badminton tournament,” he squeaked. He didn’t look like any kind of jock I’d ever seen and now, he didn’t sound like one either. I figured he just wanted to compete to get out of other duties.

“I’ll tell you what, private. If you can beat me, I’ll sign you up.” With that, we got a couple of rackets and a bird and went to it. I figured my challenge wouldn’t take long. I was right. Instead of the gentle lobs I’d experienced in my backyard, this kid was whistling shots past my ear, bouncing off my forehead, and had me running like I was being shot at. I don’t recall scoring a point and I was sweating like a racehorse.

“Another set, Sergeant?” he said, and I thought I detected a smirk.

“No thanks, Private. I’ve got other things to attend to but consider yourself signed up for the tournament.”

After this kid won the tournament a week later, I found out he played intercollegiate badminton for Columbia University (who knew there was such a thing?).

If only my father’s advice had extended to badminton, I might have spared myself some embarrassment.

SUGGESTION BOX

From your HOA Board of Directors

In addition to the suggestion boxes in the Starlight Ballroom and the HOA Office, you can email your Suggestions to us at DTHOASuggestionBox@gmail.com. Please include your NAME, STREET ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER along with the issue you would like the HOA to address. Briefly describe your issue / concern and any possible solutions.

You will be notified when your suggestion is brought before the BOD, and what actions will be taken regarding it. By sharing your concerns with us you can help continue to make Del Tura our piece of paradise!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Happy Spring Everyone! This season has been filled with a lot of great activities, events and I might say “lot of visitors”. It’s been lots of fun! I hope you all consider attending Tuesday Coffees each week at 9:00 a.m. It’s a great way to meet other residents and stay in tune with everything going on in our community, plus you get free donuts and coffee!

Please remember to stop by the HTA office with your golf cart to get it registered. They will give you a sticker similar to the one on your car. There is no fee for the sticker.

Speaking of golf carts please remember to obey all traffic laws, stop at all stop signs and use arm signals when you are turning. This alerts others of your plans and can help avoid an accident. Keep in mind that no one without a valid driver’s license is allowed to drive a golf cart, (especially children.) It is dangerous and against the law. I have been hearing a rumor that golf carts are required to move over when a car is behind them, but that is not true. Our Rules and Regulations, Exhibit “C” states the right of way as: Pedestrians, Bicycles, Golf Carts, then Cars. We do have a few very slow carts

In Memory Of

but they are usually considerate and will move out of your way. Please remember our speed limit is 16 miles an hour. If you are constantly passing golf carts that means you are probably speeding. Slow down and take in our beautiful scenery … enjoy your ride. Please don’t post your questions and concerns on Facebook. Your HOA board and HTA do not monitor those sites. I would ask that you send an email to one of the Board of Directors. The email addresses are all listed in this Tower newspaper. If you don’t receive a Tower, consider paying $12.00 a year for an HOA membership and you will have a Tower delivered to your door each month. Lastly, don’t forget we have a HOA meeting the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Starlight Ballroom. HOA members have the opportunity to speak at the end of that meeting (with a 3-minute time limit). This is your opportunity to make your voice heard. I hope you all have a great April. Say hello to me when you see me out in the community and please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

Sincerely, Darla Greer, Your HOA President

Bill Kelly, John Clifton, and Corazon Coligado, 2907 Madera Circle

CERT

The Del Tura Country Club CERT Team was chosen as The CERT Team of the Year 2025 by the North Fort Myers Fire Department. The trophy will be on display in the CERT display case in the Clubhouse Lobby. The CERT team is honored to be recognized for this award. The Del Tura CERT team will continue to work for our community and to be available to assist other communities when needed. Thank you NFMFD and Del Tura. On February 28, the North Fort Myers Fire Department hosted their annual picnic for all the local community CERT teams. There were a variety of local resources present to share information with us. Music was provided by Del Tura’s Bob Lussi. Mr. Lussi volunteers his time at the NFMFD Annual Picnic. Thank you to Christie and Beth for always supporting the local community CERT teams. The food and CERT t-shirts were awesome. The ice cream truck was a bonus.

On February 25th, CERT helped sponsor a free seminar on Dementia Sensitivity. This education was provided in partnership by Department of Elder Affairs and Lee Health. This program helped educate and prepare friends, families, and caregivers as they support and care for older adults diagnosed with dementia.

As the hurricane season draws closer (June 1), we want everyone to be prepared. CERT will conduct a Hurricane Preparedness Session on April 29th. You may have already attended a presentation in the past, come and consider it a refresher course. You can never be too prepared for emergencies.

If you have an interest in becoming a CERT member or want to ask questions on how to become CERT certified through FEMA, please contact Bertie Dugo at 617-974-8502.

GOOD TIMERS

Good Timers live up to the name of the club. So far this year we have had a wonderful outing to the Octagon animal sanctuary. A beautiful fashion show by Anthony’s and lunch catered by Jason’s deli. Not to mention the two fun game days.

We will be having another game day on April 13, in the Royal Palm room from 1 to 4 pm. Our club holds its monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at 4 pm in the Starlight ballroom, please join us.

Love was in the air for the Del Tura Ladies 9-holers

DEL TURA SOFTBALL

The 2025 Del Tura Amigos softball team had three Jim’s, a Donnie “Three Y’s” and a Donny “Three e’s.”

By the end of the season, the Amigos also had a Ford League championship “Three-peat.”

The Amigos secured their third consecutive league championship with another season of strong hitting, solid fielding and an unrelenting championship mindset that propelled them to their fourth title in the past five years.

The three Jims — second baseman/manager Jim Hamilton, shortstop Jimmy Yeakle and outfielder Jim Schetter — all played key roles in the championship run, along with solid hitting, fielding and pitching by Donnie “Three Y’s” Yasynchyn. Also coaching the Amigos were Dick Rose and Rita Szukhent.

The infield corners — featuring third baseman Mark Kent and first baseman Mick “Ultra” Kidwell — locked it down defensively and provided the Amigos with a big boost at the plate.

The outfield also included heavy hitting

and hard-running Rick “Ike” Ichenberg, Tim Walker, Kevin Dowling, Bruce Smith and Donny “Three e’s” VanderVeen. Catcher Glenn Holmes was solid behind the plate.

“Despite the naysayers, we played as well as we’ve ever had,” Hamilton said. “The competition throughout the league was the best it has been in a long time from the top on down. “There were six strong teams capable of beating each other on any given day.”

The Big Red Machine also had a couple of former players — first baseman D-Jay Traver and catcher Rick Antaya — come out of retirement to keep the championship run intact after the Amigos lost veteran outfielder Craig Lindahl following season-ending surgery.

“This year, we had challenges and came out stronger because of it,” Hamilton said. “To do what we’ve done after the way the season has gone for us makes it extremely satisfying to win another championship for the Del Tura community and our loyal fans.”

THURSDAY NIGHT BINGO

This will probably be my last letter for a while because you know that our HOA sponsored Bingo ended on the last Thursday of March.

It has been a really good season & the last month or two we have had record crowds of people who came up to play which really made it fun for all of us who were running it.

So, saying that, the first thing I want to do is to thank all of those that were part of our team working with us because without all of you, Janet & I would never have been able to run this every Thursday night.

So, many thanks to the following. Sheri French, Barb Clancy, Karen Rivet, Liz Poniatowski, Peter Moreton, Jane Sheaffer, Joyce Frase, Jim

Biery, Cindy Brinton & Karla Newton.

Hopefully I have all your names right. You are a wonderful team that we both appreciate & hopefully you all will be back again in October to help us run it again for another season. By the time you are reading this Janet & I will be enjoying spending two weeks down in Jamaica like we do every April on vacation. Then come the first of May, we head up to Wisconsin where we spend the Summer with our families up there.

So, enjoy your Summer & we look forward to coming back next October & seeing you all again.

~ Jack & Janet

DEL TURA AMIGOS WIN THIRD CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP!

SHUFFLEBOARD LEAGUE

SHUFFLEBOARD ENDS SOON

With one week to go in the Friday league, the brackets are slowly coming together to see who plays who for the 16 team tournament happening on Sunday, March 22. This will be followed by our luncheon on the 28th. It was a great season even though the courts had damage that slowed the courts. The good news is the courts are being redone (1), level them out to decrease the drift (2), they will again have the glass beads imbedded to make the surface much faster and it is much safer than spreading beads on the surface. We want everyone to enjoy the courts year-round.

This year’s top dual meet winners with their records with one week to go were:

• MaryKay and Glenn Tointon, 40-5

• Judy Lessard and Martha Anneshansley, 33-12

• Deb Mormon and Craig Evans, 29-16

• Janet Reinen and Kathy Zitani, 29-16

• Marcella Carothers And Kathy Boesel, 29-16

EDITOR’S NOTES

I’m always looking for articles representing our wonderful family of veterans here in our community. Please feel free to submit to me a short story or something even funny. I can clean up the article for you, or I’d be

Also, at the county, Glenn and Jack Norton teamed up to place second in the 32 team ProAm tournament held on February 20th, 2025. Glenn also took second in the consolation bracket in a tourney at Lee county February 13th.

On March 7th, Martha Anneshansley took 4th place in the main which gave her enough points to become a State Amateur. Way to go Martha!

We invite anyone interested in becoming a part of the Friday League, either as a team or a sub, please let me know and I will add you to the list. Have a great summer ahead everyone.

willing to come interview you and write it myself.

Let me and our community show the love and support of our military… present and past!

18 HOLE WOMEN’S GOLF

The season is flying by. I have a lot of news to get to. The 18 hole ladies played their President Cup in January winners are Bobbie Asper A Flight, Wendy Dowling took the B flight, Cilla Canney C flight, and Laura Zocco took the D flight. Congratulations to the winners, but also I would like to congratulate all who played as well. Not everyone can win but all can participate which in my book is a win win situation.

Ryder cup was played on February 23 and March 2 sponsored by Sunday skins. It was the solid shirts vs the print shirts. The printed shirts came from behind and took the cup on the second day of competition, it was a good time had by all. The group consisted of a mixture of 18– and 9–holes ladies. This was a two-week Sunday event of strictly fun, and good food and friendship were on the agenda. Let me take the time to thank Sue Passineau and Colleen McVeigh which headed up the committee and their band of misfits which are as follows:

Sandy & Jane Glancy, Tim Trout, Bertie, Linda Beirmann, Glenda & Laura Zocco and Kathy Montemaggi, who were the food police, which by the way was delicious. Good job boys and girls! We also made 2 charitable donations 1 to our beloved CERT and second to All Souls Food Pantry. Great job!!!!!

On to more news, those that have been around awhile will remember “lega” don’t ask me what it stands for I have no clue. Well it took a hiatus for awhile, but good news it is back. The sign up sheet is in the dungeon. Several golf courses around the area participate and our first course was Whiskey Creek on March 11. Wonderful take to represent Del Tura and meet new people at other clubs. Includes lunch cart and prizes for $40.00 . So much more to tell you, are you hanging on the edge of your seats yet?

Member guest was held on March 6. This is one of my favorite events. A lot of us golf with our 9 hole buddies. Shout out to Jean Rymer and her sidekicks Sherri Leverre, Linda

Beirmann, Cilla Canney, and Connie Racine. They worked hard and it showed. The props were awesome and the theme was Mardi Gras and food was BBQ and delicious. Winners are: flight 1 Asper Bobbie/Quinlivan Cindy flight 2 tie for first Ciezadlo Mary/Haag Marlene congratulations to the winners and all that participate. I would also like to thank the pro shop for keeping all scores. Thank you Butch and Paula much appreciated. OK onward and upward.

Elected new officers are as follows:

Chris Bunker/ President

Julia McDonald / Vice President

Mary Cciezaldo/ Treasurer

WRITER’S WORKSHOP

We’re approaching the end of our fifth season, and looking forward to meeting Monday, April 14 and Monday, April 28, at 4 pm in the Royal Palm Room. If you’d like to join us as a new member, please text (607-769-5766) or email me to let me know you are interested. My email address is ndavy01@gmail.com. You’ll need to provide me with your name, your email address, and your cell phone number. Our challenge this time is to open your mind, to relax and to bring your focus down to just you, your senses and emotions, and the subject you are observing. We’ll observe an area within your home. Then describe it, trying to give life to inanimate objects, without showing your own feelings.

Here’s an example. Please note that this was written when we had two teenagers in the house and a husband who played in a men’s softball and bowling league.

Hall Closet by Nancy Davy

You wait in jumbled order for the door to be sprung open. The light reveals a large array of “good” coats on metal hangers, that stand in disciplined precision along the right wall. Opposite, on wire hooks, hang the “everydays”, heaped one upon the other. When I sometimes turn the light on and find one lying in a heap, I fancy that they jostle for position in the darkness.

You are plain – small, narrow room, drawing all of your personality from your contents. You hold baseball caps of every color. They look down silently from nails along the walls. Some are worn and dirty; others prized, immaculate.

There is the sense of stifled action as I glance across the floor. Here baseball bats and softballs; faded ball glove in repose. Heavy winter boots and gloves are transferred front to back as seasons alter. A bowling bag rests against the wall, dangling handle torn by years of use. Soccer cleats, a color guard rifle, pushed to the back and buried. Rollerblades and helmet, elbow pads and shin guards, and a borrowed pair of crutches. In the corner, a red golf bag stands at attention. Waiting, always waiting, they remain. I know they are inanimate, yet I can almost hear them. The light brings them to life and they are tensed in expectation. They dream in darkness of another opportunity – to be plucked by hands and called upon to run, to kick, to soar – or simply to escape the boundaries of your gloomy netherworld, where you can give them nothing but your walls. To me you are a trusted holder for safe-keeping, but they only wish to leave you, for it’s only then they live.

Here are some of the responses, and I hope you’ll enjoy them:

The Garage by Gail Hodge

You are anxious for the overhead door to open so you can exhale the heat that is trapped within you. Your roof was replaced and a fan was added, but even the spinning gives you minimal relief. Your wall-to-wall overstuffed space holds much of the daytime heat, not allowing the relief you so desire. The many things that have been collected over time keep that heat within your walls.

Some of your contents hold considerable value, while others are keepsakes from times past. Well-worn tools that were used by parents from another day and time; never replaced due to sentiment, even if usefulness has long passed. Continued on page 14

Thoughts of a Cooking Pot by Charlotte Ping

The large, heavy, dull-colored, 70-year-old aluminum cooking pot sits alongside shiny new copper-colored coated skillets and pans of all sizes. The antique pot is still intimidating to all the youngsters surrounding it. It thinks “age before beauty.” It is still used a lot and glows in anticipation of what will be put into it this time. The best thing was popcorn that snapped, crackled, and popped just like Kellogg’s Rice Krispies. But the pot admits it did need some help – a human hand to shake it up a little.

Nowadays, since microwave popcorn, Jiffy Pop and unheard of – actual bags of already popped corn in many kinds of flavors are available, the pot feels somewhat out of date. “By the way,” the pot wonders, “What is a microwave?” Never mind that the handle is broken off. In fact, there is no handle on it at all. It stands tall; like a regal queen among the inexperienced new-fangled utensils, some even in plastic, in all colors of the rainbow. How ridiculous!

The aged pot looks insulted and awkward with its black popcorn pocked marks on its bottom. So

what? It was here first and will last longer than those silly-looking newbies!

The Vegetable Crisper by Suzy Townsend All crowded up against each other, struggling for their own space and unable to draw a clean breath, the vegetables in the crisper drawer knew it was time to rebel against their circumstances. Alone and forgotten, they had but no other option available. If one of them rots out, they all rot out. Solidarity!

Knowing it was the most delicate and likely to decompose first, the lettuce shrank back into itself. Browning like a very bad spray tan, liquidation was certainly next. Accepting its fate, the cucumber, too, began to exhibit shrinkage. Lying beside it were the carrots. Once proud, stiff and erect, they became mush with no hope of fulfilling their purpose. One by one, the other drawer inhabitants knew their turn at oxidation was quickly arriving and sank back into their fallen comrades with resignation. The cherry tomatoes shriveled and spit out their seeds as they gave in to their fate. One lonely apple puckered up.

The forgotten drawer was finally opened one day, giving forth a giant cloud of decayed fart. The drawer of vomitous bilge was finally emptied, scrubbed, and now awaits the next grocery day, when it can again fill up with things it can allow to rot. Good times, indeed, for a plastic drawer.

REFLECTIONS

“A Breath of Spring” by Dianne J. Roderick

Somehow this time of year adds a bounce to our step and has a way of lightening our spirits. Each day, as we venture outside and breathe in the fresh, fragrant air of this new season we suddenly realize that our senses have become heightened as nature magically awes us with quite a show! The sounds and sights that are occurring seem to draw us into all the beauty that is unfolding in front of us. One can’t help but feel more relaxed and energetic as we experience the renewal of this beautiful season!

*********

Come walk with me…

In the still quiet of the morning, nature is waking up from its peaceful sleep. As I begin my early morning walk, the beauty of the day begins to unfold. Birds are happily chirping their favorite songs and the palm trees begin their graceful dancing to the beat of a gentle breeze. Our resident squirrels are busily chasing each other and two cottontails are playing leap frog in a nearby field. The moist dew on the lush green grass glistens like diamonds as the sunlight teases each new blade.

I stop for a moment to reflect on the overwhelming sight of these mesmerizing surroundings. The still surface of the lake is like

glass, mirroring the branches of the tall pines. The scents of the various floras pleasantly surround me, filling me with a complete sense of peacefulness. A true sensory experience! In the meadow on the far side of the lake a white bird and a lily stand silently alone as the orange blazing sun continues to rise, creating an awe-inspiring backdrop to signify the beginning of yet another beautiful Del Tura day. Tomorrow I will again come to this hypnotic, peaceful spot to meditate and watch once again the beauty of nature. As I leave, I will take with me into this new day the beauty of this experience and await nature’s next miracle.

*********

If you have an opportunity to take a walk in the peaceful, early morning hours, stop and reflect on your surroundings. Listen to the different sounds of the birds chirping and notice the new buds of the trees and plants. Walk slowly by the lake…pause awhile… and feel the stillness and quiet as the morning dew gently caresses your cheek . Take it all in and breathe …allow the calmness of this moment to enter into your thoughts and give you a feeling of total relaxation.

Happy Spring!

Happy Easter!

How Can You Boost Your Savings?

It might not be on your calendar, but America Saves Week is observed from April 7–11. Are you saving enough? If not, how can you save more? If you don’t think you’re saving enough, you’re not alone. Just 22% of Americans are completely satisfied with the amount of money they’ve saved, according to a recent Yahoo Finance/Marist Poll survey. And the same survey showed that a third of households couldn’t cover one month’s worth of bills if they lost a job or other source of income. What’s behind this savings gap? Several factors are involved, including the high cost of housing. But while you can’t control these external forces, you may be able to increase your savings by taking these steps:

• Create a budget — and stick with it. Following a budget is not everyone’s idea of fun, but it can be of great use in managing your spending, which, in turn, can help you save more. You can find many free budgeting apps that allow you to track your spending and place it into categories. Once you know where your money is going, you may find it easier to cut back in certain areas, such as possibly eliminating streaming services you don’t use much.

• Pay yourself first. Like everyone, you have a lot of bills to pay each month. But why not pay yourself first? Even if you can’t put away a lot of money, any amount will help. And you can make it easier on yourself by having some funds moved automatically each month from your checking or savings account into a liquid, low-risk account — one you don’t use for your everyday expenses. Over time, as your income goes up, you can increase the amounts in these automatic transfers.

• Take advantage of “cash-back” offers. You may already use a credit card that provides you with cash back on purchases. But did you know you can also download cash-back apps? Like cash-back credit cards, these apps give you a percentage of your spending back, helping you save money on many of your regular purchases, such as groceries and gas. You can even find apps that offer promotions that let you earn more at specific times or for buying certain items.

• Cut down — or consolidate — your debts. It’s easier said than done, but the more you can reduce your debts, the more money you’ll be able to save. You can choose to tackle the debt with the highest interest rate or get rid of the smallest debts first, but whichever method you choose, try to be as diligent as you can. You also might be able to consolidate your debts — but be careful, because not all debt consolidation offers will work in your favor.

• Get some help. Your employer may provide an employee assistance program that offers, among other benefits, credit counseling and other types of financial guidance. You may want to contact a financial professional who can take a holistic look at your situation and offer recommendations on saving, investing and goal setting. It’s always important to save money — but it’s not always easy. However, by exploring every avenue available to you, you may be able to improve your saving skills to the point where they can make a real difference in your life.
