KID’S CORNER

The terms of five board members expire in February of 2019. Four of the board members are eligible for another term. Unfortunately, Neil Goldman has served 2-3 year terms and is therefore term limited. As such, he is not eligible for reelection. Richard Stern has volunteered to give up his seat to make room for new contributors. In Sept., President D’Silva appointed Larry Lawrence and Henry Rhodes as co-chairs of the nominating committee and Susie Golden, Sharon Goldman and Norman Olshansky as committee members. Goals for the coming year were to improve board gender balance, enhance representation of younger families, maintain year around resident representation and have candidates that

possess the skill sets needed for a strong board. The committee is recommending the following candidates: Doug Day, Deirdre D’Silva, Michael Knupp, Joan Koplin, and Paul Weiner. The committee plans to publish the candidates’ resumes in the January issue of The Eagle. There are five candidates for five open seats so there will not be a “contested” election. All candidates receiving votes will be elected. At the February 7, LMA Board Meeting, the Presidents of the homeowners and condominium associations will cast ballots for the election of the board members. (See accompanying article on pg. 13. by Michael Knupp on the LMA election process) A session will be held January 23rd at 7 p.m. for the Association Presidents

to meet and interview the candidates. Presidents’ and candidates please mark your calendars. Bio and candidates’ pictures will appear in the January Eagle edition. Qualified nominations received in writing by the LMA manager, George Niel, 30 days prior to the election will appear on the ballot sent in advance to the Association Presidents. Additionally, nominations will be accepted from the floor the night of the election. Please direct any questions about the election to Larry Lawrence or Henry Rhodes. Their contact information is in the Greenbook and on The Landings internal website. Happy Holidays! Please see the complete list of the Association Presidents on page 27

DEMONSTRATION Sura Kochman organized a rally on November 11 to protest the proposed Siesta Promenade project. It was estimated that 150-200 area residents participated and the demonstration lasted over an hour. About eight of the area community associations were represented as well as countless individuals. The Landings had an excellent turnout. Many displayed clever posters and signs. Given the honking of horns, waving and “thumbs up” by passersby, the demonstration was obviously very successful. Unfortunately, although the media promised to cover the event, they did not attend. That was disappointing, but it did not hamper the enthusiasm of the demonstrators. The LMA is greatly appreciative of the efforts made by The Landings residents in support of the demonstration. PLANNING COMMISSION HEARING NOVEMBER 15 Approximately 150 residents attended the Sarasota County Planning Commission Public Hearing on the Benderson Siesta Promenade application. The county planning staff began the session with a presentation on the various issues scheduled for consideration: re-zone, the Critical Area Plan (CAP) and a special exception to allow transient accommodations. Benderson then summarized the project which essentially was the same as that presented at the neighborhood workshop in August.

Interested parties were then given five minutes to speak, with the neighborhood association representatives presenting first. In all, approximately fifty-five individuals took the stand. The seven commissioners, although not asking many questions, appeared to be quite attentive. The vast majority of the speakers made presentations on issues of density, congestion, traffic, public safety, and healthy environments, building heights, and the area affected by the application. These presentations took about three hours. At the conclusion, the Commissioners began their deliberations. Continued on page 23

THE LANDINGS EAGLE December 2018

LMA Meeting Notes

Letter to the Editor “HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!” Hats off (and masks on) to Doug and Veronica Day and George Michalopoulos for a great Halloween celebration in The Landings on Saturday, October 27! Extra plaudits to Diane Hurter, “The queen of Halloween!” If you missed visiting the Hurter house, do yourself a favor and book it for next Halloween. My wife, Anne, and I have lived in The Landings for 34 years and enjoyed celebrating Halloween with friends and neighbors. We always enjoyed seeing all the children, especially the little ones, come

to our house for 19 years. We moved to Eagles Point 15 years ago, but have watched the evolution of this fun evening throughout the single family homes over the last few years. Thanks go to our terrific neighbors who have continued to build on the Halloween event with increased numbers of displays of large Halloween creatures and luminaria throughout the community. So, to Doug, Veronica, George and Diane...and so many volunteers (including the golf cart transportation), thanks for a wonderful evening. Karl Maggard

I had the great pleasure of hosting another father-son team for this year’s National Tennis Tournament. In fact, the father, Chris Gilmore is from Portland, Oregon, where my wife, Anne and I spend our summers Thanks to Ralph Ricapito for “putting us together.” Chris and I had great conversations about Portland, its wonderful “weirdness”, and wine, restaurants and more. Chris and his son, Connor, had nothing but praise for our Landings tournament. The Landings event is the national clay court tournament and earlier in the year, they played in the national hard court contest in California. They were exuberant in their praise for our tournament. In fact, they said there was no comparison with the California event. They said that our courts were not only the best they had played on of any clay court event, but

that the entire tournament was exceptionally run. They said the organization of the event, the set-up, even the food was better than other events they had attended. They even said that it was better run than some of the junior pro events that Connor and his brother, who is vying on the pro tour, had competed in. So, well-deserved praise to Kevin Lechlitner, our Landings Racquet Club General Manager, Dick Bayles, LRC president, Adrian (“MO”) Moghina, our club pro, John Janes, tournament director, Dee and Ralph Ricapito, who line-up the hosts and lunch and dinner, Barbara Pendrell and Deb Dougherty who run the tournament desk. Paul Weiner, Colin Wendell, Tommy George and Gary Eason are also essential volunteers on the tournament staff. Karl Maggard

LMA Pres., Deirdre D’Silva began the meeting by announcing when a board member misses three meetings in a row, they are by rule, automatically removed from the board. As a result, Norman Olshansky was removed. After a brief discussion of his accomplishments, a motion was made to reappoint him to the Board. The motion was voted on and passed. D’Silva thanked everyone who worked on the county grant and announced the County Commission approved the application and awarded a matching grant of over $2000 to The Landings. She went on to thank Associations who have incorporated a “ring of responsibility” around their lakes which helps protect both land and water. The Lakes, Drainage and Environmental Committees will be hosting an information night for all residents interested in learning the best ways to keep their lakes clean and healthy. Once scheduled, the date and time will appear in The Eagle. She thanked Doug Day for his work planning and organizing the Halloween Trail event. The trail length was increased by about 35% and golf cart shuttles were also added. D’Silva also thanked the Veterans Committee for organizing all the details of a November 11th reception honoring the 65 veterans who reside in The Landings. She also encouraged residents to continue submitting interesting photos that may be featured in The Landing’s Eagle.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasurer, Dick Bayles forecasted the LMA is essentially on budget for the current fiscal year and expects to break even by the end of the year. All the sizable accounts receivable have been turned over to the LMA attorney for collection except those where contact was made and payment is expected. The Florida statute collection process requires a notice of intent to lien and a chance to cure. After this, a lien can be placed on the property and foreclosure action can be taken.

ROADS

Committee Chairman, Rudy Blohm recommended the Board put the road paving project on hold for another year as only two of ten contractors responded they might be interested and one of those backed out because they are too busy.

DRAINAGE

Committee chair, Michael Knupp reported both the drainage system and all the lakes are beginning to show their age and as a result, additional funding will be required moving forward. • A broken drainage pipe caused the partial collapse of a driveway on Kestral Park Lane. Both the pipe and driveway were repaired. Continued on page 21

2018 Holiday Cheer for Kids Fighting Cancer

By Jim Goldman

I would like to thank all who participated in our kick-off reception at the Landings Racquet Club. The Sarasota Youth Orchestra and The Pine View Youth Orchestra where outstanding. Our commercial neighbors have joined our Landings neighbors and friends in the effort to provide presents to children whose parents, for multiple reasons are unable to provide them. Last year, through all the generous support, 93 children received presents. We are now an officially documented 501(c)(3) corporation. All donations are tax deductible. I am pleased to report, because of your outstanding participation this year, we anticipate having sufficient monies to include gifts for children and their siblings from Lee Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric /Hematology/Oncology Unit and, if funds permit, Club Blue Butterfly, an arm of Tidewell Hospice to support children who have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives. It is not too late for those who wish to donate toward this wonderful cause to make a tax-deductible donation to the LANDINGS HOLIDAY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION and give it to one of our members; Heidi Bodor, Jim Goldman, Bob Keepers, Carmen Lawrence, Karl Maggard or Henry Rhodes.

The Landings “Holiday Cheer for Kids Fighting Cancer” and Hannah’s house programs have received tremendous support this year from Landings Shopping Center leading retailers.

Publix

Publix has previously provided turkeys for holiday meals for 30 of our families. This year was no exception. However, new manager Matt Ferrugia and assistant manager, Ryan Schlotterback, have gone beyond previous commitments. In addition to the turkeys, Matt and Ryan, provided food platters for the November 8th kick-off party. Further, Matt and Ryan have agreed to challenge their entire Landings Publix team to adopt children. They will buy and wrap presents for up to 15 children! We are so grateful to the Publix management and their staff. Please make sure to thank the Publix folks.

Safety Committee Update

By Paige Packman

October has been a busy month for the Landings Safety Committee, so we want to give you an update. Rapid Response to a Recent Fire Incident On October 25th, there was a fire in a condominium on Starling Drive. A nearby Landings resident smelled smoke and called the front gate who immediately called for help. Sarasota Fire, Police and Medical Emergency responders came quickly, with at least 15 emergency vehicles at the scene. The high level of response was because of the multi-family, multistory residence and the warm ambient temperatures, allowing firefighters to be relieved if necessary. First responders entered the unit and quickly put out the fire in the kitchen, halting its spread. Workmen had been working in the building earlier in the day. We are lucky to live in a community with such an effective emergency response to keep us safe. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind: • Always call 9-1-1 first in an emergency, then advise the main gate if it is safe to do so. Tell them your address and what help you need. Stay on the line with them and try to stay calm. • Register your cell phone with smart911.com so they will have your current address. • Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the street. • Check batteries in your smoke detectors; change them at least once a year. • Keep fire extinguishers in the kitchen and near exits.

per day to an average of two. Thank you for paying attention to your speed! Heads up that we are rotating the TrafficHawk on a regular basis. Remember that the limit is 20 mph on Landings Boulevard and on the north end of Kestral Way, and 15 mph everywhere else. Tip – you might try using your cruise control to regulate your speed when driving in The Landings. We are also repairing the speed radar sign to let you know when you are over the limit.

• Do not fight the fire if a room fills with smoke; leave immediately. Also, be sure that any contractors working at your residence are licensed and insured. Carry appropriate homeowner’s insurance, even if you are not occupying your home. This will ensure that you are prepared in case the worst should happen. Speeding policy Thanks for the feedback on the new radar system and speeding policy. The Safety Committee plans to refine the speeding policy and is considering residents’ comments. Good news – the TrafficHawk Radar system is having a positive effect in reducing speeding violations. During the trial period, speeding violations dropped from an average of 21 violations

Keeping the Gate House Informed We recently met with the Gatehouse to observe their check-in process. They voiced a concern that they often don’t have advance notice of visitors and contractors who are coming to The Landings, which slows down the check-in process. Here are some tips to improve their information: • Please be sure to call the gatehouse (ideally a day in advance) when you are expecting visitors and contractors; provide their name and company. • Avoid calling the gate during peak hours 8:009:00 a.m. when the entry line can be long. • Please update your guest and vendor registration list at dwellinglive.com at least annually. You can see statistics on how often your guests are visiting and it’s easy to cleanup outdated information. Thank you for your help in keeping The Landings a safe, secure and friendly community that we all enjoy!

Environmental News

By Paige Packman MORE ON BIRDS A message from the LMA Environmental Committee Chairperson Here are some tidbits and upcoming events that might interest you from the monthly newsletter of the Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail (www.floridabirdingtrail.com/kite-tales/)

Technology and Birds With field guide identification apps, it has never been easier to go birding. Many of your favor field guides (Peterson, Sibley, National Geographic, etc.) now offer an app that not only offer pictures and drawings but also bird calls to help you identify a myriad of species! Another resource, eBird, is a free Cornell Lab of Ornithology program that helps you organize your bird life history by location, time frame and species! Another tool, iNaturalist, is not just for birding – as it can give you a hand identifying all living things! By posting a picture and identifying your location through the app or website, your sighting may be identified by experts around the world or by the program’s “identotron”.

Christmas Bird Count The upcoming worldwide Christmas Bird Count will take place from December 14, 2018 - January 5, 2019. You can join in by finding a CBC “circle” that you want to participate in! Get involved in a day- long out in the field counting birds, while doing your part to conserve some incredible species, like our Florida Scrub Jay! The Christmas Bird Count started in 1900 with ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, who proposed a holiday tradition of counting birds. Before this, it was holiday tradition to go out, hunt as many birds as possible and whoever shot the most birds won. This was known as the Christmas “Side Hunt.” But with Chapman’s innovative idea, the CBC was born. These early CBC conservationists created what has become the longest citizen science project. Upcoming Events in the area Go to Florida Birding Trail website for birding events nearby and far afield in Florida: (http://floridabirdingtrail.com/ events/2018-11/?utm_content=&utm_ medium=email&utm_name=&utm_ source=govdelivery&utm_term=campaign)

Passages

|Peter E. Shrope ~ Mar. 29, 1931 - Nov. 12, 2018

Peter Edgar Shrope, age 87, died November 12, 2018. His children, grandchildren, family and friends will dearly miss his storytelling, sharp wit and generous heart. He taught his children and grandchildren to work hard, be kind and open-minded. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 29, 1931, the first child of Edgar and Jane Shrope. Pete enjoyed golf at The Oaks Country Club where he was a member for many years and played tennis at The Landings where he lived since 1989. Pete was also a patron of the arts. He

loved watching sports, cheering for the Yankees and especially his beloved New York Giants. For the last 33 years he divided his time between his home in The Landings in Sarasota with his wife Pat and their summer home on Schroon Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. At both homes he and Pat always welcomed friends, family, children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews with barbecues, conversation, laughter and experiences that created wonderful lifelong memories. Pete and Pat had many adventures traveling during their retirement years.

Pete was a civil engineer and 1952 graduate of the University of Vermont. In his early years he was a design engineer on the USS Albacore submarine in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and a field surveyor on many projects in and around southern New York. He managed budgets for statewide projects for the New York State Office of the Budget in Albany for ten years, before moving to New Jersey to become a partner with Vollmer Associates, an engineering/ architectural firm in Manhattan where he worked for 25 years.

He is survived by his loving wife Patricia and his children; Peter and his wife Stephanie, Catherine and her husband Lewis and Laurel and her husband Brian as well as seven grandchild and two great grandchildren. Additionally, he is also survived by step-children Mark and his wife Jill, Rob and his wife Celina, Jim and his wife LeeAnne and Tina Eckhardt and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on December 27th between 3-5 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club.

a Welcome Wagon volunteer, a garden club member, and a youth symphony volunteer. She was an active member of the Landings Learning Group and a decadeslong member of the Landoliers Chorus, both in Sarasota. An arts enthusiast, she frequently attended symphony and opera performances. Ute reveled in her many friends, attending social gatherings and hosting dinners and parties in the various homes she and Jack made together. Toward the end of every event she hosted,

Ute pulled out her guestbook and prevailed upon each visitor to sign it. The pages of her multiple guestbooks are filled with poems, drawings, anecdotes, and the creative musings of the many people who passed through the doors of the Hargreaves’ home, sharing in the warmth and hospitality that Ute lovingly created throughout her lifetime. Ute is survived by Jack, her husband of 61 years; her children John Hargreaves, Christine Hargreaves Ewing, and Anne Hargreaves Corley; her grandchildren Heather Ewing Lane, Celeste Ewing, and John Corley; and her great-grandchildren Ava, Kyla, and Ella Lane.

He was 78 years old and passed away peacefully with his family at his side. Irwin was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 19, 1940 to Bruce and Florence Starr. It was there he met Eileen M. Starr who he married on July 1, 1961. They had one child, Kimberly A. Starr, and were married for over 20 years before divorcing. Irwin found love again with his longtime partner Charlie (Charlotte) Valentine and

shared his life with her as he managed television stations all over the United States, making a wide range of friends with whom he kept in touch. They moved to Sarasota to care for his ailing mother and found it the perfect place to retire, building a life rich with friendship and intellectual stimulation. He looked forward to and enjoyed Friday night dinners with a close-knit group of friends. In the broadcasting industry, Irwin was known for his local television station management successes where he recast the fate of many failing stations with his style of strategic planning, goal setting, qualitative market research, station positioning, and collegial team management. The Landings Free College By Irv Kushner Don’t despair, folks, the Landings Free College is looking forward to another stellar season. (No tuition, no homework, no term papers, no grades, no credits). Ralph Ricapito and Irv Kushner are busy assembling an array of interesting, informative, and often entertaining speakers. Presentations will take place on Thursday afternoons at 2:30. Beginning on January 10th, John McCarthy, who gave an utterly fascinating talk last year about Historic Spanish Point, will kick the season off by telling us about “Sarasota’s Latest Historical Find” – an “unprecedented” underwater discovery - a 7,000-yearold Native American ancestral burial site. John has served as Sarasota County Historian, Environmental Specialist and Director of Parks and Recreation. The next week, January 17th, Racquet Club president Dick Bayles will bring the laggards amongst us into the modern world with his presentation: “Getting the most from your iPhone/ iPad”. Next, Paul Sarno, an authority on Southeast Asia, who has given several well-received talks in the past, will

tell us about a topic that has been in the headlines a lot – the Rohingyas – on January 24th. His formal title is ““Ethnic Cleansing of Muslims in Southwest Myanmar”. January will end with Gordon Garrett’s discussion of the history of the Jazz Cub of Sarasota on January 31st, accompanied by The Kitt Moran Trio. Subsequent talks will include descriptions of what’s happening at Selby Gardens, and what’s happening at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Barbara Chertok will moderate a panel discussion by several doctors of audiology about hearing problems and what can be done about them. The novelist Janet Highjens and a friend will discuss the problem of wrongful criminal convictions (not so rare). Several speakers from previous seasons, including Art Reilly and Irv Kushner, will do encores this year, and there will be a new speaker, Landings resident Guillermo Vicente Vidal. The series will wind up on April 4th, as it has every year, with a review by County Commissioner Alan Maio of what’s happened in Sarasota County in the past year, followed by a reception.

LMA Voting Process

Above: At the Forbidden City Top Right: At the Terracotta Warriors Bottom Right: At the Great Wall of China

As we come to the end of the year, it is time to start planning for the election of the LMA Board of Directors in February. The LMA Nominating Committee has been tasked by the LMA Board to recruit candidates to run for openings on the LMA Board. The committee’s goal is to find more candidates to run than there are open seats. We believe that this will produce more transparency and fairness in our elections. Also, in the interest of transparency, this article is intended to provide our residents with information outlining procedures for holding Landings’ elections in accordance with The Landings’ bylaws. The major difference in how elections in The Landings take place verses political elections is how votes are cast. Political elections are one person, one vote. Our bylaws differ in that they require that the voting is to be done by the Presidents of each constituent Association in The Landings with a designated number of votes allocated by the number of housing units in each association. The number of an Association’s units are then multiplied by the number of vacant positions. For example, if there are 10 units in an association and

By Michael Knupp

there are 5 open seats on the board, the association has 50 votes to cast for candidates. The Association president then has the option to cast those 50 votes for whomever they decide. He/she can cast all votes for one person or allocate the 50 votes for as many candidates as they decide appropriate. The candidates and their resumes will be in a separate article in The Eagle and nominations from the floor can be made the night of the election. In order for you and your association to have any influence on the outcome of the election, we urge you to meet with the president of your Association and let him/her know which candidate(s) you believe should be supported and how you think the president should allocate your association’s share of the votes. Ideally the various association boards should be involved in determining the allocation of its votes. Someone once said, “if you don’t vote, you get the government you deserve.“ The Nominating Committee urges all constituent presidents to (1) attend the 'meet the candidates' night on January 23, 7 p.m. at the LRC and (2) vote for the candidates at the February 7, LMA Board meeting.

Landings Veterans Day 2018 The Landings hosted 45veterans and their guests at the 2018 Veterans Day event that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Emceed by Bob Fernander, Colonel, USA, Ret., the event featured a keynote speech by Brian McCarthy, Rear Admiral, USN, Ret. that chronicled the contributions and sacrifices of our veterans since the founding of our republic. As this year was the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War, he handed out pins to those veterans who served during the Vietnam War years. Ed Brown, Col., USA, Ret., handed out a letter from Deirdre D’Silva, LMA

President, to each of the veterans attending, thanking them for their service to the nation. Letters will be sent to those veterans that could not attend. Following the ceremony, a buffet luncheon was served in the Club’s Poolside Room. Catered by Judy Green & Tara Lamb, other support for the event came from the Club and the LMA. Numerous volunteers, led by Adrienne & Howard Feltman, helped in preparations for the event. Barbara Rothman volunteered to provide the music.

By Heidi Bodor

Cecelia “Cece” Plass, 15, 10th grader at Pine View School • Do you have any pets? We have three cats from the Sheriff’s Dept. One is a tuxedo cat named Eric. Marissa is gray with stripes, and Ford is gray with white spots. • What languages do you speak? I am taking Chinese in school. • Do you play any instruments? I have been playing the viola for four years. • Do you have brothers and sisters? I have three younger siblings – twins Ernie and Clara (11) and PJ (9) and three older ones (Jamie, Lindsey, and Chad). • How long have you been in The Landings? We have been here less than five months. • What do you like most about The Landings? I love The Landings because it’s safe and tranquil. I love the nature trail and I like that you can run in here. It’s very peaceful. • Favorite ice cream? Chocolate peanut butter. • Favorite school subject? Math and science. • Favorite book? The Hunger Games. • Favorite TV show? The Good Doctor. It a medical show about an autistic doctor. It shows his struggle with autism. He’s “off the charts” smart. It’s amazing how it shows what he can do. • Favorite sport? Crew and running. Last spring, I ran a half marathon and a 10K last February. I plan to do the same this year. Lindsey is my inspiration for everything. She works in physical therapy at the Univ. of Chicago Hospital and manages to do triathlons and marathons. A great role model! • Favorite sport team? Sarasota Crew. • Favorite color? So many – blue, yellow, purple. • Favorite song? Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara. • Favorite food and least favorite food? Sushi/Sloppy Joe’s. • Favorite holiday? Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day. I like Thanksgiving because it brings back memories of Illinois. I helped bake for the holiday with my Grandma and Mom. For St. Patrick’s Day, we used to have a party and a parade in Illinois. I’m hoping to make it a bigger celebration here. • One word to describe you would be? Determined. • What do you do in your spare time? What spare time? I volunteer at Selby Gardens and Sarasota Memorial Hospital and run. I am also a member of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) and Sarasota Youth Orchestra. • What are your plans for the holidays? Cecelia “Cece” Plass

• Tell me about your volunteer work. At Sarasota Memorial Hospital, I work in the Departures Room, it is the room where you get checked out. I go to all parts of the hospital and interact with patients and doctors. I get to send the patients off to the next part of their life. They are so happy. I would like to be a doctor so I like being in the medical environment. After taking AP Psychology, I got interested in that. I have also suffered from eczema and am interested in dermatology or some type of surgery. I still have a lot of exploring to do though. At Selby Gardens, I normally work in the Kid’s Corner. I help with crafts and events like Splashing Saturdays in summer. They have water toys and activities for kids. I also volunteer at Lights in Bloom. I volunteered in the green house last year and had to learn about the plants to tell the people about them. • What is something you’d like to learn how to do? I’d like to learn how to ski. I’ve never been skiing. • What is your biggest dream? To cure a disease. • What is your biggest worry? Global warming. • What are you most proud of? My contribution to Pine View. I proposed the installation of sanitizers outside various buildings at school and they were installed. I was inspired by the hospital.

• Where is your favorite place to be? On the water at crew. It’s my peace of mind. I love it. • What is your five year goal? My goal is to attend an Ivy League school with a Division 1 rowing team on a medical track. • What is something that you’re thankful for? My family and education. • What is your wish for the holidays? Kindness and peace ♥.

Wishing you all happy holidays – if you know of a child that would like to be interviewed for Kid’s Corner, please email heidibo@verizon.net. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Last month the LRC hosted the USTA National Father/Son Clay Court Championships for the 25th consecutive year. In my 12 years being involved with the tournaments here, this was the largest turnout of players I have ever seen. Like a well-oiled machine, the host families met the challenge in stride. Thank you to everyone that took part and especially to Ralph and Dee Ricapito for organizing the lunch. As usual, the members really outdid themselves with the player lunch. The sheer volume of food was quite impressive. Having hosts really sets our tournament apart from others around the country. Thanks again for your help in making this a special tournament for all the players. The Annual Holiday Dinner Dance is Sunday, December 2 in the Lakeside Clubhouse with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Sammy J will provide the musical entertainment again this year. If you came either of the last four years, you know how amazing he is. James Riegel from Black Tie Catering is back again with another delicious menu. The menu specifics are posted in the Tennis Pro Shop with the signup sheet. The cost is $28 per person. Hopefully you have already signed up as it is only a few days away. assessment mailing very soon if it hasn’t arrived already. For your convenience, we have included a return envelope in the mailing. If you haven’t received it by early December, please contact me in the Tennis Pro Shop. The annual assessment is due on or before January 1st and will be considered late on February 1st. To avoid late fees and interest, please be sure your payment arrives before the end of January. Most of our seasonal members are back and the activity level has certainly picked up at the Club. Beginning in January, it will only get busier for the next few months. As you can imagine, on certain days of the week, parking is at a premium. Thursday mornings seem to be the most hectic. Along with the morning court reservations, we have four exercise classes, watercolor painting, a Mah Jongg class and potentially two home league matches. In an effort to alleviate some of the parking strain during the morning hours, I would like to encourage members who live close to the Club and have the ability to walk or ride a bike over to do so. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

By Adrian “Mo” Moghina

There is a beginning, middle and end to everything. When I was watching the Father and Son doubles tournament, I was looking to see if the best players were consistent with their start or beginning, such as; their split step, their racquet take back for ground strokes, hands in front with consistent shoulder turn on volleys, same routine and rituals before serving and returning, etc. Sure enough, the best players had consistent beginnings that allowed them to execute repeatedly and reliably under pressure. The middle and the end can have slight variations because of the shots you may be forced to take.

For example, the middle is the contact point with the ball and that can change with different ball heights. The end is your follow through and recovery. Do you have consistent beginnings, middle and end for your strokes? That’s what will make the difference in whether or not you give yourself the best chance to play well under pressure. Don’t miss the Holiday Round Robin Social and Exhibition Friday, December 14th at 3 p.m. followed by cocktails and plenty of holiday cheer. Sign up in the tennis shop. See you on the courts!

AVOCADO TUNA SALAD LETTUCE WRAPS Now that I have a new iPhone 7, this recipe comes from a great app I found: PINTEREST. It’s got lots of health and beauty tips, too. These wraps make for a great lunch when you are trying to watch what you eat. You can add slices of tomatoes on the dish. It’s a low carb easy dish.

Ingredients: • 1.5 oz can solid white tuna • 3/4 tsp. fresh dill • 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 1 Tbs. sweet relish • 1/4 cup diced red pepper (optional) • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 avocado cut into small cubes • 4 butter lettuce leaves washed and dried

Kitchen Ladies Recipe Corner: Please send your favorite recipe to The Landings Eagle along with your photo to: deericapito3@gmail.com

Instructions: 1. Drain the tuna and place into a medium bowl. Mash with a fork to shred. 2. Add the dill, mayonnaise, relish, red pepper and mix. 3. Add kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste and mix. 4. Add the cubed avocado and using a rubber spatula, gently fold into the tuna. 5. Divide evenly among the four lettuce leaves.

LMA Meeting Notes • A contract was issued to repair a street drain flooding issue on Landings Lane. • An outflow control gate is being replaced on Carriagehouse Lake (Lake 3) to allow for water level control during heavy rain storms. • County engineers evaluated a major problem with the intake pipe of Lake 1 near the North Gate. Repairs will be made at the county’s expense. • The process has begun to correct the street flooding problem on Pine Harrier Circle and Peregrine Point Lane. The solution is to re-contour the swales and install 6 inch pipes under the driveways. This was done a few years ago at another location. The cost was shared between the Landings Management Association, the Landings Homeowners Association and residents of the street. LAKES Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported their contractor is working to correct problems with lake fountains and lights. Increased algae issues are also being addressed. Knapp was pleased to report the award of a County Neighborhood Initiative Grant to The Landings. This is a matching grant that will help with lake erosion and algae issues.

Continued from page 3

EXTERNAL RELATIONS SIESTA PROMENADE Larry Lawrence reported in early October all Landing’s residents were urged to sign a petition in opposition to the Siesta Promenade project and to express their views to the County Commissioners. An impressive number of residents took action although there is still ample opportunity weigh-in for those that may have had other priorities earlier. The importance for the Commissioners to have an emphatic impression of where you stand cannot be over stated. The question frequently asked, “Is this a done deal?” The Commissioners have clear authority to dramatically modify the proposed project and this is a distinct possibility if an overwhelming demonstration of concern is registered by the area residents. Larry Lawrence reported on the key dates regarding the Siesta Promenade project. The November 12 demonstration was cancelled because organizers did not sense they would have nearly 100 participants and unless they did, felt it would be viewed as a negative. The County Planning Commission meeting is still scheduled for November 15. The decision meeting of the Sarasota County Commission is scheduled for December 12. Lawrence encouraged

participation in the two remaining meetings for as many board members and residents as possible. He expressed concern about the amount of time allowed to speakers who oppose the project, as well as their perceived continuity. The Siesta Promenade organizers ask all representatives attending to wear blue so the Commissioners can readily see the overwhelming numbers of residents with concern. The Commissioners can be influenced by the commitment and perseverance of their constituents. Lawrence asked everyone to mark their calendars for these important dates, so collectively Landing’s residents can have a significant impact. NOMINATING COMMITTEE Chairman, Larry Lawrence reported five board members’ terms will be expiring in February. Of those members, only four may run again. Neil Goldman is prohibited from running again due to term limits. Residents interested in becoming a Board member should contact Larry Lawrence or a member of the Nominating Committee.

Save the date (January 23, 2019 at 8:30 am) for the first birdwalk in The Landings led by a Sarasota Audubon Society volunteer. Sign up (maximum enrollment of 20 people) by emailing Maralyn Kaufman, Environmental Committee Chairperson at mkaufmanphd@gmail.com.

SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman, Michael Knupp reported his committee now totals seven after adding two new members. They are soliciting input from board members and residents and reevaluating the current speeding policy and will be making recommendations to the Board. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Chairman, Norman Olshansky reported they are continuing to consolidate the internal and external websites. Their goal is to have it completed and running by the end of the year. AESTHETICS Chairperson, Elena Darden reported work by Florida Power & Light is delaying care of the overgrown area between two houses on Kestral Park Way North.

MAINTENANCE Maintenance Committee chairperson, Joan Golub, updated the board on several maintenance issues. • Sewer drains were monitored NATURE TRAIL and cleared of debris during COMMITTEE Committee Chair, Karen heavy rains. • A few delineators were repaired or replaced. • The Gazebo garbage receptacle is in the process of being repaired. • A new safety mirror for the intersection of Landings Boulevard and Kestral Park Drive is still on backorder. ENVIRONMENTAL Chairperson, Maralyn Kaufman-David, Ph.D thanked LMA Pres. Deirdre D’Silva for continuing Environmental activities in her absence. She updated the Board about three environmental issues. The pilot study of the Integrated Pest Management program is ongoing. Several individuals and families are monitoring the effects of insect damage to trees and shrubs on one of the Flicker Field Road islands after the suspension of usual chemical treatments. The program is expected to continue through the summer of 2019. The committee is also doing research to determine the best plantings for The Landings. Many young and older residents worked together to clean up the coastline during the International Coastal Cleanup. Participation and results were considered a huge success. The committee is continuing to work on ideas regarding “birding” at The Landings. A local member of the Audubon Society will be helping with species identification and instruction. 2019 BUDGET Treasurer, Dick Bayles moved for the approval of the 2019 proposed budget. After a 20 minute discussion of reserves, and expensive upcoming lakes and drainage projects, the 2019 budget was approved. COMMUNITY HAULING The Community Hauling program is scheduled on the second Wednesday of November, February and May. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers. Jared Gracia-David, Phillippi Park Volunteer Jared Gracia-David is a young man with a mission. A senior at Pine View, he has committed to making a difference on this planet, especially concerning the environment, which he has always loved. Today he leads monthly cleanups at nearby Phillippi Estate Park. It all started as a game. Jared was in 5th grade when he heard about Geocaching a sort of world-wide treasure hunt using GPS coordinates. With a strong interest in the outdoors, nature and the sciences, Geocaching caught his eye. Besides the fun part of the game, it included a focus on care for the environment and community cleanups. People would post about a site that needed cleanup, then gather together to take on the job. Young Jared had already participated in environmental volunteer work at Selby Gardens and in Sarasota beach clean-ups. As he grew older, Jared decided it was time to head up his own events. He contacted the Sarasota County Volunteer Coordinator and learned that Phillippi Park needed serious help. Invasive vines needed to be cleared; moon vines and air potatoes were clogging the nature trails, trash needed to be picked up, and there was always replanting, weeding and mulching to be done. He posted the event on www.Geocaching.com and, before long, volunteers had signed up, mostly adults but some children came too. The group started meeting once a month to attack moon vines and air potatoes and the like. It is a community thing, and Jared has worked hand-in-hand with the person in charge of Phillippi Park; she tells him what needs attention, and he assigns volunteers to take on the job. After some time, Jared became hopeful he could expand attendance. Garbage was floating among the mangroves at the shoreline, and it needed to be removed. Furthermore, many trees on the estate had invasive plants growing over them, and morning glory plants were choking the mangroves. In order to recruit more people, he decided to expand his cleanups to include students at his school. He spoke with his guidance counselor and the teacher who runs the National Honor Society and they both agreed to help him get the word out. Now students there can join Jared’s cleanups and get community service hours for their work at the park. Today, Jared is hopeful of enticing volunteers from The Landings, for the park is just south of their homes. Cleanups take place once a month and residents are invited to participate! One Landings resident has even brought his 10-year-old

22

grandson to the event! Besides his ecological volunteering, Jared is a true Renaissance man! He had volunteered at Sarasota County Windsurfing Camps to help other young people learn the skills of this exciting sport. A graduate of their program and an avid windsurfer, Jared came back to help other kids learn. “Windsurfing takes a lot of practice,” says Jared. “But it is an exciting sport!” Jared has also participated in the Sailor Circus since 4th grade. He started as a clown, began to master other acts including the unicycle and soon added juggling to the routine. He was so enthusiastic that he started a juggling club at school, where he teaches fellow students how to juggle balls and clubs. (He himself has learned to control four clubs at a time, and five balls.) He has also conquered stilt walking and most recently appeared costumed as a palm tree atop his 4-ft. stilts! In December, he will appear in Sailor Circus’s winter shows in several capacities: bike for five, unicycle, stilt-walking, juggling, and balancing on the slack rope. (The slack rope hangs about five feet high in the center. Jared performs on the rope using no pole.) Jared is also an accomplished chef. • Has been cooking from a very young age • Has enjoyed experimenting with complex dishes, creating new twists on favorites and incorporating ingredients he’s grown • Some specialties are creme brûlée, scallop ceviche, tortellini, black forest cheesecake and beer! • Won 1st place in the Florida State Student Chef Cook-Off hosted by the Florida Department of Agriculture • Named Florida State Student Chef Ambassador In addition to this, Jared loves music and started to study violin at the age of four. He has played in the Sarasota Youth Symphony and plays today with the Pine View Chamber Orchestra. Since Jared has always had a connection to nature, he plans to continue this passion with future studies in life sciences, hoping to eventually go into biology research. Jared Gracia-David is a young man with a future! Get to know him in person at the Phillippi Park monthly clean-ups. The next events will take place on December 15 and January 19 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. All are welcome. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring water and work gloves. To receive updates on the cleanups, you may contact Jared at jaredgd@verizon.net.

Fa La La La...Oh Yeahhh By Dee Ricapito

MUSIC is a piece of art. It goes in your ears and straight to your heart! You remember that song whenever you hear it playing, it brings to mind days gone by. For example, at parties, the oldies’ tunes bring a sense of joy and dancing, maybe even sorrow. Holiday music is no exception. When our holidays are packed with shopping, “Jingle Bells” can be heard everywhere along with “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.” Then there is “Santa Baby,” a seductive classic played lots along with “Baby It’s Cold Outside” even in Florida! Holiday songs are incredibly popular year-after-year....(overand-over). You go to concerts just to hear holiday music; or listen to sentimental ballads by famous crooners, or taking loved ones to see the “Nutcracker”; then there’s moving church music; or background instrumentals at private gatherings; and often times see many Santas playing jolly tunes on the streets. It’s all wonderful and disappears on New Year’s Day. Everyone knows some of the words to “Auld Lang Syne” or at least some sounds coming out of your mouth of this famous New Year’s song. Again, it’s a reminder of times long past and days gone by, and people who shared our lives while sipping Champagne. Engaging with music any time of year heals and can be a joy that blooms with age. Although Rap music is a hard pill to swallow. Yet, I find it fun music splashing in the pool with grandkids. Maybe someday it will be tickets to the opera, and maybe bring them unexpected pleasure and a bit of culture.

CUISINE OF NORTHEAST THAILAND

Continued from cover story

They mainly focused on what the requirements are of the CAP methodology, whether the CAP was appropriate for this application, what the boundary should be and the height of the buildings. There was a brief discussion about traffic, the hazardous intersection and the high number of rear-end crashes. The Commission then voted 5-2 to support the application. The audience was stunned, distressed and speechless. They were astounded that the Commission spent just a few minutes on the substantive issues related to the effect the project would have on the quality of life, performance of first responders, and the impositions on the area citizens and communities. They did spend about 10 minutes on traffic, and instead of considering the impact this project would have, they simply acquiesced to the notion that there has always been and always will be traffic congestion and delays associated with Siesta Key. The rest of their time was devoted to technical aspects of the application related to methodology. Although a number of speakers addressed the issue of the context of this project as it relates to the intersection and the surrounding area, never was there discussion (positive or negative) of this concept. The attendees and presenters were in disbelief that the substantive and contextual issues were not seriously considered by the planning body. Hopefully the Sarasota County Commission, during its hearing on December 12, will focus on the effect the project will have on the critical issues affecting the lives of residents and if a project of this nature is sustainable in the rapidly changing environment.

Happiness Is…Broadening Your Horizons

If you’re like most people, you probably fall into one of two camps. You’re either all in on any new adventure that comes your way or you prefer to sit back and think about things, weighing the pros and cons before making any major decisions. The good news is that, no matter who you are, the folks at Abel’s Ice Cream have you covered! There are a lot of new and wonderful things happening at Abel’s so feel free to dip your toe in or do a belly flop! So, what’s new with your friends at Abel’s? Owner Jerry Williams was quick to fill us in on their news. “One of our recent menu additions is Sarasota’s own Tropical Shores Gourmet Popcorn. We’ve been fans for a long time, and now we’ve partnered with them to offer it in our shop. We have perfect serving bags in some of their most popular flavors.”

Jerry also shared his excitement that along with the ice cream voted BEST in Sarasota, they’re now serving the best coffee. “Lelu’s Coffee is available today in a variety of flavors. And, I’ll let you in on a little secret,” he added. “If you want to make the best even better, add a dollop of your favorite ice cream into a steaming mug for an amazing coffee experience. I don’t think I’ll ever have my coffee plain again!” Wondering what flavors can make your coffee sing? Abel’s is serving two seasonal flavors through the holidays. Peppermint Flash (Refreshing and vibrant ice cream filled with peppermint candy.) and Egg Nog (Sweet & delicious ice cream; a seasonal favorite!) are both available for a limited time. Can you already feel the holiday spirit? But wait – there’s more! Jerry was bursting to

5 years straight! let us in on his pièce de résistance. “We’ve had so many people mention how great our ice cream would be À la mode on a warm piece of Apple or Cherry Pie, so we decided to make their wish come true. Abel’s is now serving both flavors of the delicious, fruitfilled treats.” No matter what fantastic menu item brings you in to Abel’s, be sure to check out the refreshed look of the store. You’ll enjoy new paint colors and amazing wall art from photographers Wendy S. Cohen of Follow Me To Siesta Key and Rich Tilton of Tilton Photography. Abel’s Ice Cream is located at 1886 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota in the South Bridge Plaza. Open Sunday through Thursday from Noon9:30 pm, and Friday and Saturday from Noon-10 pm.
