Holiday Cheer Program Was Successful Again This Year Dear Fellow Landins, Wonderful news! The generosity of our community again exceeded the expectations of The Landings Holiday Cheer community program committee members. We had hoped to increase the number of children served. This year, residents provided donations and gifts to 91 children this holiday season fulfilling wish lists from the children. The overwhelming generosity of our community towards those that are struggling is something that we can all be VERY proud about. This program began four years ago with a phone call about seven families who were not going to have Christmas without some help. I reached out to a few friends and the word spread. Each year the participation grew and now four years later we have 90 residents that participate. The original premise was to help those families with children fighting cancer, which expanded last year to include Hannah’s House, a home for battered women and their children and this year to include kids fighting cancer from Lee Memorial Health System. Children Cancer Center (CCC) from

Tampa has been our partner since the beginning and will sponsor a party for families when they pick up gifts on Sunday, December 17, at the Landings Racquet Club. Additionally, we have hosted the quarterly meeting of local CCC families at the LRC, where families have fun together and the parents get to enjoy each other’s company in a nontreatment environment. The feedback we receive from those that participate warms the heart; from Janet Heijen’s writers group that gave children books and toiletries, widows that “felt the spirit again”, grandparents that are reminded how “lucky” their families are, to families that had parties to spread the news and hats off to all who shopped especially Lisa Bradley who volunteered to purchase gifts for 11 children two days before gifts were to be distributed. We also received 30 turkeys donated by our Publix neighborhood supermarkets to share with our sponsored families. We extend our sincere gratitude for their continued generosity.

Much appreciation and congratulations for this year’s success go to the Elves Coordinating Committee: Carmen Lawrence, Bob Kueppers, Heidi Bodor, Deirdre D’Silva, Jim Goldman and Karl Maggard. With deep gratitude, Henry Rhodes

Election of LMA Board Members and Process By Larry Lawrence

The LMA Annual Meeting will be held February 1st at 7pm in the LRC Lakeside Room. It will be immediately preceded by the normal monthly meeting which will begin at 6:30pm. The primary agenda of the annual meeting is the election of board members. As detailed in Michael Knupp’s article in the December edition of The Eagle, the presidents of the constituent associations, or their designees, vote for the board members. The representatives have to be present to vote so encourage your president to attend and the constituent associations should discuss their candidate preferences in advance. A meeting will be held on January 18 at the LRC Poolside Room for the presidents to hear the candidates’

presentations and ask questions. It is requested that all presidents or their designees attend. The three goals of the nominating committee this year are: 1) to enhance the gender balance, 2) have a strong proportion of year round board members and 3) select representatives with the skills sets to deal with the LMA issues. This year the presidents will vote to fill four of the nine board seats. There are six highly qualified candidates and their bio-sketches are included herein. The board responsibilities have been discussed with each of them. As mentioned in the December Eagle article, qualified nominations received in writing by the LMA Manager, George Niel, 30 days prior to the election will appear on the ballot sent

in advance to the constituent association presidents. Nominations can also be made from the floor at the meeting. This year’s nominating committee consisted of Carol Furlong, Susie Golden, Michael Knupp, Henry Rhodes and myself. Your support of the LMA election process will be greatly appreciated. The six candidates are: Richard Bayles, Kristy Bower, Elena Darden, Roger Kidder, Norman Olshansky and Richard Stern.

LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres., Dick Bayles began the meeting by announcing Paul Weiner will replace Connie Goldman as the landscape chairman. He is also the landscape person at the racket club. The get-together to meet the six candidates running to fill the five vacant seats on The Board is scheduled for 7 p.m. on January 18.

FINANCE REPORT LMA Pres., Dick Bayles reported no significant changes to finances. The Irma debris removal expense and the website rewrite savings will lead to an end of year forecast deficit of $8200 or 1.2 percent of the budget. The website contract fell through and alternatives are being pursued.

SAFETY AND SECURITY New Chairman Neil Goldman reported state-of-the-art speed detection equipment would be demonstrated and discussed by a Traffic Hawk representative on Wednesday, December 13 at 11 a.m. His committee discussed a resident who has been verbally abusing a member of the gate staff. Holiday gift cards were purchased for security personnel. They will be distributed prior to Christmas. Speed program statistics for November indicated 10 vehicles exceeding LMA parameters. Drivers included four residents, three guests, one vendor and two vehicles that could not be identified. Appropriate letters were mailed.

LAKES

Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported Lake 3 algae blooms and clogged fountains would be cleared soon. Small alligators have been sighted in Eagles Point and Starling Lakes. Residents are urged to be careful when

walking around these lakes especially those with small pets.

DRAINAGE Committee Chair, Michael Knupp had no new drainage issues to report. The committee met with several Tree House residents to discuss drainage issues in that Association. The County Stormwater Management Department will be contacted to discuss their responsibility for drainage in The Landings.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Committee chair, Deirdre D’Silva announced that Maralyn Kaufman would be joining her on the Environmental Committee. She also mentioned she was unable to attend the Sustainability Conference due to the death of her father-in-law.

AESTHETICS

Committee chair, Deirdre D’Silva announced Bob Frymier and Larry Lawrence would begin installing the wonderful holiday lights on December 8. She thanked David Jacaruso for the quick work he did on the front entrance monument and also thanked Larry Lawrence for supervising the removal of mildew from all The Landings light poles.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping Chair, Connie Goldman reported foliage at The Landings entry and on all “S” islands has been replanted. Holiday lights will be shining brightly soon.

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance Committee chair David Jacaruso, reported the sign replacement program continues throughout The Landings. Signs at Landings Way, South Gate, Landings

Boulevard, and Landings Court will be replaced this month. A damaged metal gate locking guide at the Southgate will be repaired soon and three delineators installed recently have successfully prevented vehicles from hitting the large rock or damaging the irrigation system.

Additional completed projects included • The repair of a pothole on Kestral Park South. • The relocation of an Eagles Point sign to prevent future damage to it by mowers. • The replacement of an accent light on the main entrance island. • The rewiring of the main decorative light post. • Both main entrance monuments were touched up with paint and the grass line against the wall was mulched to prevent further damage from weed whacking. • Burnt out external and internal lightbulbs were replaced at the main gate house. • The security license plate light at the North Gate was re-wired.

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Resident Bill Whitman thanked Community Events Chairman, Doug Day for leading a successful Halloween event. Another resident thanked the Board for their interest and support of the feral cat issue. More than 50 attended the meeting with the panel of experts. Nature Trail Committee Chair, Karen Shaeffer reported portions of the Trail have been washed out again and suggested the trail may need to be raised as a long term fix. Dick Bayles reported someone mentioned a month or two ago that a couple of the stairs were submerged.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE January 2018

President’s Column By Dick Bayles I trust everyone had an enjoyable holiday season, including the chilly weather for this time of the year (it wasn’t winter yet). The Association’s Annual Meeting is scheduled for February 1, 2018 in the Lakeside Room of the Racquet Club at 7:00 p.m. The primary purpose of the meeting is election to the Board of Directors for four seats normally scheduled and one for an existing vacancy. There are six candidates for the five empty seats; two are present board members. A separate article in this issue includes the material submitted by the candidates for the empty seats. The voting for the candidates is determined by each component association of The Landings and submitted at the meeting by their president. If you, as an owner, want to provide input to the outcome, get in touch with your association president.

Meet the candidates on page 26

LHA Meeting Notes At its regular December board meeting, the Board initiated the procedure to fine an owner on Peregrine Point Circle for uncorrected violations of the Association’s Declaration of Restrictions. A fine of $100 per day for each day of failure to correct the landscaping and pool conditions has been imposed as of December 1, 2017. In other actions, the board authorized letters to be sent to owners on Flicker Field Circle for removal of construction material from street view, and to owners on Peregrine Point Circle East and Kestral Park Lane for removal of tree stumps visible from the street. There are seven areas negatively affecting LHA owners’ drainage. All but one are solely LMA’s responsibility, involving no cost to the Association. An engineering study of the remaining one will determine the best solution and associated costs. It approved driveway pavers on Peregrine Point Drive, exterior colors on Kestral Park Lane, and the removal of certain trees and shrubs from Peregrine

Point Drive. The notice of Annual Assessment for 2018 was mailed in late November 2017 and is due and payable on or before January 1, 2018. If you are an owner in the Landings Homeowners Association and have not received one, please contact Dick Bayles (contact information is in the Landings Handbook). The Annual Meeting of the Landings Homeowners Association will take place on February 8, 2018. The materials for the meeting will be mailed in January. It is vital that there be a quorum to hold a valid election. We encourage all association owners to complete and return the proxy or ballot before the meeting to be counted as present even if you are planning to attend. The incumbent members will rerun for election to the four seats up for election in 2018. No other candidates have come forward. The next regularly scheduled meeting is January 11, 2018 at the Landings Racquet Club at 7:00 p.m.

Speed Control In November, the speed control program monitored 1,977 vehicles for the month, an average of 65 per day. There were ten substantial violations of our speed limits (generally 15 mph except for portions of Kestral Park Way North and Landings Boulevard).

Three warnings and one violation notice were sent to Landings residents and one telephone call to a vendor. Three warnings were sent to owners for violations by their guests. Notification was not possible for two visitors.

Spotlight on Landings Volunteers

Living here in our Landings paradise, it’s sometimes difficult to grasp the alternate reality that exists for many of our fellow citizens in Sarasota. But thankfully many residents in The Landings have stepped up to volunteer throughout the greater community helping in immeasurable ways. They are ensuring that people have nutritious food to eat, that the elderly receive proper medical attention, that students attain a quality education, and the disabled obtain appropriate care. They are supporting the incredible arts and cultural scene here, and so much more. We’d like to begin profiling some of these Landings residents that unselfishly devote their talents to improving life throughout our community. Equally important, it’ll also highlight the worthwhile social services in our area. If you volunteer and would like to spotlight your organization or you know of some resident(s) who you feel should be recognized, please contact Steve Poyta (poyta@verizon.net or tel # - (941) 8220751). Staff from The Eagle would interview the volunteer and write the column showcasing the activities, prerequisites, commitment and benefits of their volunteering. The column would also provide contact information of the organization so that others may consider getting involved with these groups as well.

Seafood lovers, it’s good and fresh Yelp review: I see why this place is all five stars. Amazing find, tucked away in a nondescript strip mall adds to its local, simple vibe. Best seafood I have had in a long time. Service made it feel like we were part of the family, four happy diners tonight. If you read this post, stop searching and start eating. Seriously do not pass up this little gem. Living in Florida, you expect to find fresh seafood no matter where you dine. If you are a local seafood lover, you probably have a mental list of go-to restaurants which serve the freshest seafood. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill needs to be added to it. Fresh Catch’s, father/son duo, Bob and Devon Provost have a serious passion for seafood which started way back when the family lived in the Boston area. Their simply prepared, never-fried, never-frozen dishes are paired with a variety of simple sauces that serve to complement, so the freshness of the seafood shines. Your fish/seafood selection goes from the case onto the grill. Prepared grilled or blackened, topped with lemon and butter, Pico de Gallo or tropical salsa. Served with a fresh ear of corn on the cob and baby roasted potatoes. Soups, salads, sandwiches and steam pots round out the menu. If room permits, be sure to order a slice of their homemade key lime pie. Bob’s wife, Debra, makes the key lime pie, using freshly whipped cream. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of beers and wines. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill, located at 7119 S. Tamiami Trail, just south of Stickney Point Road in the Buccaneer Plaza, is a casual restaurant/market with indoor and outdoor seating for close to 30. Here’s what more patrons are saying about the restaurant on line: Tried this place last night on a whim and it did not disappoint! Everything from the staff, to the menu, to the meal itself was perfection. It’s a small place and luckily we’d come in between dinner rushes and got a table right away. Within 10 mins the place was full again. The wait staff was smiling and helpful. We shared stone crab soup to start with a couple of ice cold beers, tons of crab in the soup and excellent flavor. For our meals we got blackened tripletail and snow crab claws. Each came with a side of roasted potatoes. I can’t say enough about how fresh and delicious the entire meal was. We will be back! WOW! WOW! WOW! This place is a hidden gem! Fish was fresh today and you could taste the difference. Very clean kitchen. They cooked the fish to perfection and the presentation was 5 stars like you would expect at a fancy resort; those extra added steps. This place is the real deal. Only thing that made me upset was that I never knew it was here before. Sooooood GOOD! This is must try! I was so glad to find this cute restaurant and fish market. To get a high-quality fish you need a fish market and this fits the bill. I wanted a takeout fish plate and I got the blackened pompano with potatoes and corn. I made a salad at home and had a beautiful meal. The corn was not overlooked. It also has a big counter so the next time I will order some oysters and try another dish. It’s much bigger than I thought. I am going to become a regular. See more reviews online at Yelp and Trip Advisor, Special orders and reservations accepted. Fresh Catch Fish Market and Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. 941-413-7133, freshcatchfishmarketandgrill.com (Advertorial)

THE LANDINGS EAGLE January 2018

Racquet Club News |President’s Report By Dick Bayles I hope everyone’s holiday season was enjoyable – including the unusually cold (it wasn’t ever winter yet) weather for a part of the month. Our prime season is underway, and the use of our courts, fitness center, and meeting rooms will be high. Patience is a virtue when the competition for facility use is high. The Club’s 2018 Annual Meeting is scheduled for January 16, 2018 in the Lakeside Room at 7:00 p.m. There will be a regular monthly board meeting at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon. Every member should have received the Notice of Annual meeting and other materials. If you have not, please visit or call the Club to be sure you get one. It is important that there be a quorum at the meeting; even if you’re planning to attend, it will help us a lot if you give us your proxy ahead of the meeting. The proxy is the green sheet included in the materials. As in 2017, there will be an election for a seat on the Board of Directors. There are five candidates for the four seats to be filled this year. Our documents call for a somewhat complicated election procedure when there are more candidates than seats. It involves a ballot and three envelopes; their use is described on the first sheet in the materials. The Annual Meeting is not one where operational issues are discussed; the regular monthly board meeting is the right venue for those topics; I hope to see you at both.

|Manager’s Report Happy New Year! I trust everyone had a safe and happy holiday season with all your family and friends. As a reminder, the Landings Racquet Club Annual Meeting will take place Tuesday, January 16th in the Lakeside Clubhouse at 7:00 p.m. You should have received the annual meeting packet in the mail two weeks ago. We are having an election this year for the Board of Directors. Please fill out the ballot and sign and return the proxy to the Club at your earliest convenience. Contact me by phone or email at LRCtennis@verizon.net if you haven’t received your mailing or have questions about it. All members are invited to be present at the Annual Meeting in person or by proxy. As a reminder, the Board doesn’t make day-to-day operational decisions at this meeting. If you have a concern or an idea, please share that with me or come to the regular Board meeting on the third Tuesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Members should have also received an invoice for the LRC annual assessment back in mid-November. The annual fee for the Racquet Club for 2018 is $1,244.00 again. Our fee hasn’t changed since 2011. Thank you to those that have already given me a check. If you haven’t submitted your payment, please keep in mind that it is due January 1, 2018.

By Kevin Lechlitner

Late fees and interest will be charged February 1st on any unpaid assessments. I’d like to see everyone avoid that if possible. On December 3rd the Landings Racquet Club held its Annual Holiday Dinner Dance. It was a fun evening with 54 members in attendance. Chef James Riegel from Black Tie Catering prepared a fantastic dinner. I always receive positive comments on his food. Sammy J was back again for the 4th year in a row to provide the entertainment. He was accompanied by a live saxophone player. Thank you to Jill Eisner and her committee for all their hard work. Stop by and look at the pictures from the event if you would like to. They are posted on the bulletin board by the coffee. Now that January is here, some of our regular activities will be starting up again. The Landings Learning Group begins its six-program schedule January 17th. The Landings Learning Group committee, led by Howard & Adrienne Feltman, have put together another wonderful schedule of musical programs & lectures that will be held on select Wednesday afternoons through the finale on March 28th. The registration sheet for the series subscription is in the Pro Shop. Ralph Ricapito is ready to go with another season of the Landings Free College beginning on Thursday January 5th. It will run weekly through April 5th. Look for the program fliers announcing the performances or topics in my weekly emails or on your association bulletin boards.

|News From the Court By Adrian “Mo” Moghina Hope you had a great Holiday Season. John and I are looking forward to a great 2018 tennis season. If you’re looking for a good tennis New Year’s resolution, I recommend that you work to improve the quality of your serve and your return of serve. Obviously, this is how the points are started and you have to look to take control of the points from the start. When you are the server: recognize which return is either neutralizing your advantage or putting you on defense, the forehand side of the returner or the backhand side and which one is giving you an immediate offensive opportunity. When you are the returner: your goal is to improve whether you can return an effective cross court return. Ideally you should be able to hit it short or deep deliberately depending on what is more effective against that particular player. John and I can help you work on these techniques and goals if you need a one-on-one session to help break it down for you personally. By focusing and nurturing these new habits throughout the year, you will see great improvement in the results of your matches. Our next Round Robin Mixer is scheduled for Saturday, January 20th 2 – 4 p.m. Pro-Exhibition will follow the mixer at 4 – 5 p.m. Sign up in the tennis shop. Wishing you all a Happy New Year and looking forward to seeing you on the courts!

BEST RESTAURANT FOR STEAK!

Alpine Steakhouse is proud to be the recipient of the Sarasota Magazine Readers’ Choice award for “Best Restaurant for Steak” for the past five consecutive years. If you haven’t yet, it’s time for you to discover the Alpine Steakhouse, Florida’s oldest premier restaurant, steakhouse, meat market (butcher shop) and small specialty grocery all under one roof. The Alpine is something of a cultural landmark, being more than 40 years old, the first place in Sarasota to specialize in prime meats of the New York City steakhouse persuasion, and has continually been operated and crafted to perfection by the same family. Come in and enjoy a great steak in the newly remodeled 70 seat dining room. You can choose your own steak from the meat case. “The thing that makes me the proudest is that virtually nothing we serve comes out of a box or shrink-wrap,” says co-owner Mark Rebhan. Owners Mark and son Matt Rebhan, want to invite everyone to come and enjoy a great meal in this unique restaurant. Here is what they are saying online: “Pittsburgh Style” We had the NY Strip “Pittsburgh Style” which means heavy sear on both sides. Lots of flavor. Mmmmm. We had a twice baked potato to go with it. We are on our way again for the second time this week. Great Atmosphere. Also, an in house butcher shop right inside.

16

Next time I’m going to come here to pick up my steaks and fresh ground sirloin for some tasty burgers. “What an amazing place! It is not fancy or pretentious!” Just excellent food and great service. We had the NY strips and the filet mignon...all cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. The twice baked potatoes are amazing as is the homemade clam chowder. We were full but we HAD to try dessert...we had the truffles mint chocolate chip and spumoni with fresh whipped cream. Even the coffee was good... what took us so long? Also want to order from the meat market... wow. One of my new favorite places.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE January 2018

Through the Eyes of a Veteran

By Diana Colson

|Capt. Gordon Garrett served during the Cuban Missile Crisis Gordon Garrett was a Captain in the Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served from 1960 to 1963, most of that time at Eglin Air Force Base located in the Florida Panhandle. This was the base which served as the staging ground for Viet Nam. In July of 1962, Nikita Khrushchev had secretly agreed to Cuba’s request to place nuclear missiles on the island to deter a future invasion. Before long, construction of several missile launch facilities was underway. When a U-2 spy plane produced clear photographic evidence of this construction, the US established a military blockade to prevent further missiles from reaching Cuba. On October 13 of 1962, Captain Garrett received top secret orders labeled DEFCON #2. (DEFCON #2 translates to “Defense Condition #2.” The seriousness of this message is extreme, for DEFCON # 1 means war!) These top-secret orders designated Elgin Air Force Base as the jumping-off point for most of the Invasion of Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis was underway. Fighter jets stood at the ready. Latrines had to be dug, for pilots were never to be more than two minutes away from their plane. B-52’s with H-Bombs were already based at Eglin, some of which were circling Cuba. Cargo planes stood ready, loaded with big heavy equipment. It was a time of enormous tension, for the DEFCON #2

orders remained in effect for 13-days (October 15- 28, 1962). The Cuban Missile Crisis was considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. There were serious decisions to be made at Eglin Air Force Base. If Cuba realized that American forces were being amassed at that base, it would become a major target. Up to 20,000 military dependents were housed in the area, among them Captain Gordon Garrett, his pregnant wife and one child. Continued on the next page

Where would these dependents go? It would have to be a mass exodus! Ultimately it was decided that dependents would stay put. There were many close calls. A Russian sub was part of the Armada headed towards Cuba, fully armed with nuclear weapons. An American ship dropped depth charges over this sub, and its Russian Submarine Commander prepared to fire off his weapons. Fortunately, that officer was talked out of doing so by his 2nd in Command, and a terrible war was averted. Letters flew back and forth from Khrushchev to JFK, some of them extremely hostile. Kennedy chose to respond only to the gentler communications. The Russian leader must have said to himself, “Maybe we can make a deal.” After a long period of tense negotiations, JFK and Khrushchev publicly agreed that the Soviets would dismantle their offensive weapons in Cuba and return them to the Soviet Union. In exchange, the US made a public declaration agreement to avoid invading Cuba again. Secretly, the US also agreed that it would also dismantle all missiles located in Turkey and aimed

towards the Soviet Union. It was an unforgettable time in Gordon Garrett’s life. Still, the naval blockade of Cuba ended on November 20, 1962, and the crisis faded. Captain Garrett left the Air Force in 1963 to join the Reserves, where he served from 1963-1968. Gordon had been raised mostly in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. His father was one of the first workers at Oak Ridge as part of the Manhattan Project. Although his dad had been selected to enter West Point, there was not a lot of money in the family, so he went to work. After taking only two college classes, Gordon’s dad took a job at Oak Ridge. There he received on-the-job-training, and ended up being the Supervisor of a nuclear group. Many others in the group had advanced degrees. Oak Ridge went from zero to 75,000 people in just 18 months, becoming the place where we split the atom, with Los Alamos being the place where the bomb was put together. Following his military service, Gordon graduated from Denison University in Ohio, and then attended the University of Tennessee, where he

received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He briefly considered working for the CIA in Washington, but decided instead to go with Proctor and Gamble, where his main claim to fame was introducing Bounty Towels into the test market. He continued as a marketer for Warner-Lambert, where he worked with a staff of 700, calling upon the headquarters of various stores to place Warner-Lambert products. Retiring in his 60’s, Gordon found himself with too much time on his hands. Lion’s Club International Foundation was

looking for a professional manager. He took the job and traveled the world raising and giving away money in substantial amounts. (The Lions donate 35 million dollars annually to charitable projects such as providing one million cataract surgeries in China.) Gordon spent six adventurous years traveling the world for The Lions. Fortunately, he was able to take his first wife, Penny, with him on many of these international expeditions, even as her health was failing. The couple shared two wonderful sons, three grandkids, and one great-grandchild, but after 50 years of marriage, Penny sadly passed away. Gordon had always been a tennis enthusiast. An avid player, he had even attended the US Open for 29 years running! Sometime after Penny’s death, Gordon connected with Sue Lewis here at The Landings. Sue had owned two stores in Atlanta specializing in tennis and sports attire, was widowed, and equally committed to the sport. Before long they were married. Today, Gordon and Sue enjoy life at The Landings. They have made many friends and enjoy their beautiful surroundings.

Rules of the Road Reminders Submitted by: Neil Goldman, Safety & Security Committee Chair and Barbara Chertok, Committee Member

Walkers — Walk AGAINST traffic. Additionally, since we have no sidewalks, it is suggested to walk no more than two abreast and walk in a single file when necessary in narrower areas. Although pedestrians generally do have the right of way, walkers should use common sense. In narrower areas walking two or three abreast is not safe. Night Walkers — Wear reflective gear and/or use a flashlight to alert drivers you are on the road. Dog Walkers — Have your dog walk on the grass while you walk on the road. Bikers — Ride with the traffic as close to the edge of the road as practical. Night Bikers — Wear reflective gear and use a bike light. Pets — All pets should be under control at all times. Drivers — Please obey all posted speed limits and stop signs. Be aware of pedestrians, bikes, mini-bikes, golf carts, stray animals and other vehicles. Do not tailgate another vehicle because you think it is moving too slowly. Please share these comments with your guests and visitors. This article will be published from time to time. If you would like to submit information or suggestions, please send your comments to: Neil Goldman at chgosprtfn@gmail.com or Barbara Chertok at barbchert@gmail.com.

Captain Jim Klopfer’s Fishing Report Adventure Charters 941-371-1390 January fishing in Sarasota is all about the weather, pure and simple. Angling success is determined by the ability to adapt to the existing weather conditions. Tides will often times be very low in the morning. Couple that with a northeast wind and the flats will not have very much water on them. Water temperatures will be at their annual low. It is time to change tactics! I spend a lot of my time fishing the area around Siesta Key in the winter. Both passes and the surrounding flats will be productive under ideal conditions. Weekly fronts will stir up the Gulf, bringing cold, dirty water in through the passes and up onto the nearby flats. However, the area down south stays protected, and this will result in better fishing. Extreme low tides will force the fish off of the flats and into the channel. This actually makes locating them easier. 1/4 ounce Bass Assassin jigs in New Penny and Glow are very productive, as is a shrimp free lined with a small split shot. Speckled trout, ladyfish, jack crevelle, and pompano will be the primary catches, but sheepshead, grouper, flounder, and bluefish will also be found in the deep water. As the tide rises and the day warms up, fish will move out of the deep channel and up onto the flats to feed. A late afternoon high tide can offer great fishing for speckled trout, with jigs and live shrimp under a popping cork producing a lot of action.

ALL PICKLEB LESSONS LE AVAILAB

The flats south of Spanish Point are very productive, but any flat in four to six feet of water with grass will hold fish, keep moving until you find them. Creeks and residential canals are great spots to fish this month. Besides offering protection from harsh winds, they provide cover for bait, which attracts fish, and the water is normally a few degrees warmer. A large hand picked shrimp is a great bait for redfish, snook, sheepshead, drum, and jacks. Deeper water is the key, find a dock or area in a creek with a little more depth and there should be fish there. Rapala X-Raps are a terrific artificial bait to use in creeks. They are deadly on snook and jacks, and a lot of water can be covered quickly. Local rivers such as the Manatee, Braden, and Myakka will hold snook, jacks, juvenile tarpon, and even bass in January. Fish move up there to keep warm and feed. This is a unique fishing experience that is best suited for more experienced anglers. Surf casters will do well off of the Siesta Key beaches during periods of light winds when the water is clear. Small pieces of live or frozen shrimp fished on a small hook with a bit of weight will catch plenty of whiting, along with trout, flounder, pompano, and other species. Jigs and silver spoons are effective artificial baits to use, especially when surface activity is seen, this indicates feeding fish.

A key part of my focus for The Landings is looking beyond current operations and turning our Forward Plan – anticipating the needs of our community five to 20 years out – into a set of action plans to ensure that: • The Landings infrastructure is maintained to a quality level consistent with the community’s upscale standards; • Our management operations live up to a “best practices” standard for similar communities; and, • We adapt to changes in our residents’ demographics to provide the community services they desire. Kristy Bower

Kristy Bower has lived in Sarasota since she was just 7 years old. She graduated high school at Riverview High and went on to the University of Florida to graduate with a degree in art education and a minor in art history. She married her high school sweetheart, Mark Bower. They now have 2 children, a boy 9 and a girl 6. She and Mark own and manage the local landscaping firm DesignScapes. She enjoys being involved in her community. She currently is on the board of her children’s school as the business partner coordinator. In her free time she loves to be outdoors, especially if it includes time in, on or near the water.

Prized for their shade-tolerance and attractive foliage and flowers, Wax Begonias are a timeless garden favorite. They are popular plants for flower beds, borders, containers and window boxes. They are compact, mound forming, fibrous-rooted plants that have fleshy stems, waxy leaves, and clusters of single or double flowers. Dwarf varieties of Wax Begonias grow from 6” to 8” high. Taller varieties grow 12” to 18” tall, and spread from 6” to 12”. They should be spaced 12” apart in the flower bed for a solid mass of color. The flowers are available in a variety of shades of red, pink, salmon, and white; and the shiny, somewhat succulent leaves are available in green, bronze, and variegated. Popular, dark-leaved kinds are the Cocktail series: Brandy, Vodka, Whiskey, and Gin. Good green-leaved varieties are found in the Lotto and Pizzazz series. Avalanche begonias in pink or white are rangier, suited for containers and hanging baskets, where their arching growth habit is handsome. Wax begonias, which are also called Fibrous Begonias, perform well in rich, well-drained soil, that has been prepared by adding generous amounts of compost or other organic matter to help retain moisture. They’ll form tight, compact plants in full sun, with increasingly looser form and fewer flowers as you move them deeper into the shade. If grown in too much shade they may become susceptible to powdery mildew. The bronze leaf begonias are better

suited to full sun locations. These plants tolerate hot humid conditions well. They grow best with consistent moisture, but due to their thick, waxy leaves, which help minimize water loss in hot weather, they can tolerate short periods of drought. Considered a winter annual, or tender perennial, in our area, these plants can be cut back in the fall for renewed flowering the following winter. Although they do not make good cut flowers, potted wax begonias can be used indoors if given enough light. Begonia is a genus of about 1500 species of plants that are native to moist subtropical and tropical areas of South and Central America, Africa and South Asia. They can be divided into 7 informal groups: some are grown for colorful leaves, some for showy flowers, and some for both. The botanical name of wax begonias is Begonia x semperflorenscultorum, which means “ever-blooming plants of cultivated gardens”. The Begonia genus honors Michael Begon, the Governor of French Canada in the late 1600s, and a passionate plant collector. It is said that in addition to their decorative purposes, begonias were used for polishing swords in the past, and according to the “floral dictionary”, the gift of a begonia sends the message to “be cautious”! But there is little about these plants to cause caution; they are easy to grow and a colorful addition for any gardener. www.sarasotagardenclub.org

Unfortunately, on Saturday the weather was rainy , windy and cold which probably discouraged some people from visiting the Racquet Club. Nevertheless, it was well received and we all vowed to organize another show before too long. We would love to include even more artists next time. It is always so rewarding to discover such beauty, passion and dedication in all the participants’ works. Feel free to contact the artists if you are interested in their latest work and did not get a chance to visit the show. THE LANDINGS EAGLE January 2018

Kid’s Corner

By Heidi Bodor

Aria Hoang, 4, preschooler in the Daisy Class at Forty Carrots School • Do you have any pets? We have a grey dog named Greyjoy.

Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great!

Shampoo and towel dry.... and you’re done! The style is in the cut, not the blow-dry, so you don’t have to fuss with your hair to look good... even fine, limp or curly hair... and my new steam color process + Olaplex creates richer brunettes and spectacular blondes. The colors go deeper and last longer, yet are far more gentle to the hair.

• Do you play any instruments? I have a toy piano that I play and I like singing to the radio. • Do you have any brothers or sisters? Yes, I have a sister that is 2 years old. Her name is Baby Boo.

By Appointment Only with Ian:

• How long have you lived in The Landings? We have been here a little over two years. • What do you like most about living in The Landings? Swimming in the pool! I meet our neighbor Leila and we swim together. We also take walks by Eagles Point and see the rainbow fountain.

Landing’s Feral Cat Program An interested, inquisitive, focused group of 5060 residents armed with questions attended the feral cat educational program on November 7 sponsored by the LMA. Deirdre D’Silva, LMA board member, welcomed the attendees on behalf of the LMA. Nancy Ferraro then introduced the panel of experts: Dr. Laurie Walmsley, Veterinarian, Ashton Animal Clinic, Jo Fogarty, Veterinary Technician and TNVR Program

30

Manager for Cat Depot, and Joyce Underhill and Crystal Davis representing Sarasota County Animal Services. Sharon Goldman provided refreshments: whimsical eartipped cat cookies! Dr. Walmsley began by reminding us that cats played a major role in history by reducing and eliminating the plague. Many of the first settlers who came to the New World died from the plague caused by the rats that were on their ships. Cats were then brought onboard to deal with the rats and thus eradicated the plague for the new settlers. This is how the first cats ended up in the New World. Dr. Walmsley went on to explain that humans who fail to neuter their cats, abandon them, and leave them to fend for themselves are the source of the national feral cat overpopulation. The audience was aghast to learn that if not spayed, female cats are always either in heat or pregnant. When only six months old females begin bearing litters. Dr. Walmsley has for several years managed Buddy’s Feral Cat program, underwritten by a single donor. This program is responsible for neutering over 10,000 ferals since 2001. Cat Depot is now providing the same services as Buddy’s Feral Program. Dr. Walmsley noted that The Landings is a model for feral cat management in the community. Those residents who take part in the TNVR program and utilize all the

free services provided by Cat Depot by trapping the cats, having them neutered and vaccinated and then releasing them back to their colony are keeping feral cat numbers in control. Dr. Walmsely also noted that feral cats are playing a major role in maintaining the health of the community. Rats are known to carry bacterial diseases such as leptospirosis that can be harmful to humans. Feral cats keep the rat population under control in The Landings. Joyce Underhill from Animal Services shared information about county ordinances (copies are available at the Racquet Club), practices and support. Animal Services will come out and lay a trap when a neighbor complains about an animal. She gave numbers of ferals that she has trapped in The Landings over the past year as well as the disposition of those cats. Several were returned to their colonies, those that were friendly were put out for adoption and one was euthanized. Underhill noted that when

Animal Services is called it is a much more involved process, with a cost to the taxpayers of Sarasota County. In addition, once a cat is trapped by Animal Services they are required to hold them in a cage for at least 3 days. She noted that many of the feral cats are quite distraught and panicked at being caged in captivity for several days. Jo Fogarty from Cat Depot demonstrated how the feral cat traps operate and brought several different and relevant handouts for the attendees. She reminded everyone of Cat Depot’s free trap, spaying/

neutering and vaccinating program and said she would be happy to help any residents who were interested in learning more about these services, who had questions about feral cats and/or needed assistance. You can contact Jo via email at jof@catdepot.org or phone (941) 366-2287. The audience shared stories of past and current humane initiatives here in The Landings as well as questions and concerns regarding feral cats. The LMA appreciates and supports those efforts and encourages the various associations to do so as well. Many of those in attendance are already feeding ferals and have been proactive in having them trapped and neutered. Your input is important, so if you wish to share information with other interested residents, or have any questions about feral cats or feral cat management please email Nancy Ferraro at ferraro@comcast.net to receive mailings and be included in a ferals group initiative.

Our Common Ground They say that a friend is one of the nicest things you can be and one of the best things you can have. It’s an intangible thing like all Landins taking pride in our landscaping wherever we live in the beautiful Landings by keeping up our gardens and common areas for those passing by to enjoy. Sharing like values with friends, or just enjoying richer every day experiences, for example: A smile

By Dee Ricapito for the mailman; visiting with friends over a coffee at the Racquet Club; stopping to chat with a person walking their dog every morning; or attending Landings Free College discussions involving our speakers many of whom are living in The Landings. Also, supporting charitable events with neighbors, such as, Henry & Sara Rhodes; Carmen & Larry Lawrence; Carl Maggard, the Goldmans, and the

Josts -- just to name a few ... who were raising funds to spread Holiday magic for children by gathering all our neighbors to contribute toys for those in need for the Holidays. Those feelings are intangible but a great way to sum up the year and get off to a positive start for 2018.
