As Irma made its approach to the Florida peninsula, Landings Sarasota County gave it’s all clear — as specified in the Landings Management Association President Dick Bayles realized that one storm procedures — and residents who left began returning. aspect of the community’s storm plan was a failure. Another note was then sent immediately after the storm left the area. “We reached 624 of 700 residents,” Bayles said. Smart phones likely aided in residents’ ability to see the messages. That will now be the default mode of communication leading up to and following a storm occurrence, Bayles said. Bayles is now working to contact the small portion of Landings residents who did not provide a working email address to the Landings Management Association. He notes that residents need not have their own email; they can provide the address of a relative or neighbor they trust to convey the information to them. Most of the rest of the Storm Procedures, besides the robocalls, “went well,” Bayles added. As the storm approached the area, the community’s gates were left open so residents could evacuate. Because of the storm, 404 Landings residents, living in Flood Zone A, were part of the county’s ordered evacuation. Another 296 residents were not impacted by the evacuation. “I believe most people impacted by the mandatory The winds of Irma pushed the water back into the Gulf, Sunday, September 10, 2017, evacuation did evacuate,” Bayles said. exposing the rock formations at Point of Rock, Siesta Key. LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres., Dick Bayles began the meeting by discussing the potential impact of hurricane Irma on The Landings. He announced emergency services will stop and The Landings guards will leave when sustained winds reach 45 mph. Since an evacuation is not likely, the North and South gates will be locked when the guards leave and the main gate arms will be removed and stored. FINANCE REPORT LMA Pres., Dick Bayles reported through the end of July, no significant changes in operating expenses occurred. The 2017 operating expense forecast remains unchanged and a small surplus is expected by the end of the fiscal year. FERAL CATS Environmental Committee chair, Deirdre D’Silva announced a panel of experts would be gathered to discuss issues related to the feral cat population at 4:00 p.m., November 7 in the Lakeside meeting room. Included in the panel are experts from Animal Services, Cat Depot and a local veterinarian. All interested residents are invited to attend. LAKES Lakes chair, Michael Knupp announced the water levels of several lakes would be reduced due to the impending storm. Not knowing exactly how much rain to expect, they would

try to err on the side of caution. Lakes are at capacity levels because of the heavy rainfall over the last month. Erosion control plantings are growing in two lakes. Modifications made to the trash collection system (Water Goat) appear to be having a good result. Environmental Committee chair, Deirdre D’Silva thanked David Jacaruso for regularly removing trash from the lake. Replanting trees in the Sterling Preserve will begin once Sarasota County gives their approval. DRAINAGE Committee chair, Michael Knupp reported the heavy rains caused several drainage issues. Most were caused by swale blockages which prevented water from flowing into the main drainage system. A blocked drain in the Eagles Nest Preserve caused water to back up in the swale that flooded into the preserve. Thanks to Jack Jost, he was able to temporarily clear the drain which then cleared the water. Every homeowner and association is responsible to maintain the swales on their property. Swales should be clear of tall grass, weeds, shrubs and trees. Driveways should be low enough to allow water to flow into roadside catch basins. Contact Michael Knupp if you have any drainage issues. SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman Neil Goldman reported the committee will study an area of traffic
many residents consider dangerous. This is an area of traffic on Kestral, as it relates to the Northgate and entering and exiting the Shopping Center at the entrance to Publix. An expenditure to keep the speed enforcement program going through 2018 is being considered in the new budget. Most residents are in favor of continuing the program and results show it has been money well spent. LANDSCAPING Landscaping chair, Connie Goldman reported the island on Landings Way is being refurbished. Tree trimming is ongoing and plantings are being replaced as needed. Owners and association leaders are asked to remind their landscapers NOT to put tree and plant trimmings in the center islands. MAINTENANCE Maintenance Committee chair, David Jacaruso, reported the sign replacement program is continuing. He also asked for owners, associations, and the LMA, to evaluate any trees that hang low over roadways. He expressed concern about tree limbs breaking off and blocking the roadway during severe weather conditions. The maintenance committee continually cleared debris recently from all storm drains to ensure storm water flow. Recent flooding after heavy rains in the Eagles Nest Preserve was caused by the blockage of an 18 inch drain pipe.

We would like to commend and thank Dick Bayles for his know the status of our community. efforts to keep all Landings residents informed about the conditions and situation at The Landings during Irma’s visit. Many of us were not physically located in Sarasota but we were emotionally, deeply connected and desperate to hear what was happening. It was therefore, so helpful to receive the information from Dick and a great relief to
Thank you to all who played their respective parts as good neighbors and helpful friends to one another. Once again, The Landings came through at the top of the list of first class places to live. Howard & Adrienne Feltman 5050 Kestral Pkwy S.
The committee is recommending the landscaping company that maintains the preserve continually clear and maintain the drain and swales. FY 2018 BUDGET The LMA Board decided to postpone discussion of the new budget which included an assessment increase, until the October meeting. ROADS The Board briefly discussed financial reserves and a possible accelerated road replacement program. They concluded, higher standards and better engineering would be used the next time roads are replaced. Continued on page 8

Rules of the Road Reminders
Landoliers Welcomes New Music Director
Submitted by: Neil Goldman, Safety & Security Committee Chair and Barbara Chertok, Committee Member
Walkers — Walk AGAINST traffic. Additionally, since we have no sidewalks, it is suggested to walk no more than two abreast and walk in a single file when necessary in narrower areas. Although pedestrians generally do have the right of way, walkers should use common sense. In narrower areas walking two or three abreast is not safe. Night Walkers — Wear reflective gear and/or use a flashlight to alert drivers you are on the road.
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Mona McPhail, a dear friend and music colleague, has accepted the position of Music Director of the Landoliers Mixed Chorus in The Landings. The Landoliers will continue rehearsing on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. beginning in mid October. I know Mona will welcome all singers who have some choral experience with four part harmony and the desire to be in a fun loving, musical experience. Lenora Jost, Retiring Director
The Eagle Has Landed
Dog Walkers — Have your dog walk on the grass while you walk on the road. Bikers — Ride with the traffic as close to the edge of the road as practical. Night Bikers — Wear reflective gear and use a bike light. Pets — All pets should be under control at all times. Drivers — Please obey all posted speed limits and stop signs. Be aware of pedestrians, bikes, mini-bikes, golf carts, stray animals and other vehicles. Do not tailgate another vehicle because you think it is moving too slowly. Please share these comments with your guests and visitors. This article will be published from time to time. If you would like to submit information or suggestions, please send your comments to: Neil Goldman at chgosprtfn@gmail.com or Barbara Chertok at barbchert@gmail.com.

LMA Emergency E-mail
LHA Meeting Notes
Our experience with hurricane Irma highlighted the need for us to have an emergency contact e-mail address for all owners. Letters have gone out to those owners for whom we do not have one.
Our e-mails go out with a sender address of
Messenger@AssociationVoice.com It is not uncommon for e-mail providers (Comcast, Verizon, Gmail, …) to send such messages to a Spam or Junk Mail folder (the name depends on the e-mail provider and/or software). In times of emergency, please be sure to check these folders or, better, indicate to your e-mail application that the sender address above is NOT spam/junk. The method for doing this varies widely with the vendor and the software being used to view e-mails.
What Sunrise Smells Like There are a few things worth waking up for at 5:00 a.m. in my book; for example, the magical experience of watching the sunrise on a morning walk. Enjoying the moist air and fresh smells of the dew on the grass. Or, at the beach, the light coming up over the water is insanely pretty. It attracts artists, writers, even the circus to Sarasota. On the other hand, nothing compares to the natural devastation mother nature foisted on us Floridians by the name of Irma; causing damage everywhere over our roads, homes and shores. But, here in The Landings, I feel blessed and fortunate that

recovery is not a long-time thing. Neighbors looking in on other neighbor’s homes who may be away, or helping in the clean-up efforts getting the Racquet Club up and running. It’s a fantastic feeling talking to those who were at the shelters -- all wanting the best for each other. I’m grateful, now that the morning light is back again, leaving a warm, breezy scent of the many facets of nature. It’s a stress reliever now that it’s over and a time for feeling refreshed and ready to give the day your all.
The board formally approved its decision to retain a contractor for the removal of hurricane Irma’s storm debris. It felt that not handling the storm debris problem centrally would result in dealing with owners on a case-by-case basis to ensure that the LHA section of The Landings remained uniformly free of debris. The program took longer to be completed and more expensive than expected, even with the 30% discount provided by the contractor. The final cost was not known by this month’s meeting date. There was an extensive discussion of eleven drainage issues, all of which involved LHA properties to some degree. The LHA board will work with the LMA drainage committee and individual homeowners to resolve these issues, which will take some time to work out. The board approved several requests from owners for tree removal and exterior painting. Given the Irma situation, consideration of the LHA program to do the periodic trimming of
trees overhanging rights-of-way by less than the required minimum was deferred until the Association could evaluate the financial impact of the storm debris removal. A very preliminary version of the LHA budget for 2018 was reviewed. It calls for creating a Storm Reserve, in addition to the existing Legal and Drainage reserves, with a targeted amount of $20,000, to be partially funded this year. With the scheduled addition to the Drainage Reserve, the projected Annual Assessment in this version of the budget is $150, a $50 increase over 2017. The Annual Meeting of the Landings Homeowners Association will take place on February 8, 2018. Four seats on the Board of Directors will be up for election to a two-year term. Members who are interested in participating in our association’s operations by serving on the Board should contact Bill Whitman before December 1, 2017. The next regularly scheduled meeting is October 12, 2017 at the Landings Racquet Club at 7:00 p.m.

Around The Landings Phillippi Estate Park survived Hurricane Irma with mostly landscape debris to be cleaned up and the loss of a very old live oak, known as a Grand Tree by arborists, but the good news is it fell between the farmhouse and the office instead of on one of the original buildings. The trails are getting staff and volunteer cleanup efforts and the park is open for playground, kayak/canoe launch, Gazebo and Mansion events and dog walking. October ushers in the historic Keith Farmhouse fundraising Farm to Fork event on Sunday, October 8 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., called Sunset at Phillippi with $100.00 per ticket dinner by Mattison’s Catering and music by Sal Garcia while the Light Chasers – plein air painters – will be painting and selling off easel on the Mansion lawn next to Phillippi Creek. Dinner will be on the Mansion terrace overlooking Phillippi Creek. Please know that a portion of all Light Chasers’ painting sales support the renovation of the historic Keith Farmhouse. The farmhouse was the first building erected on the estate in 1916 and will become an interpretive center when completed with exhibits and displays from the Archaic Period in the park’s archaeology to the Keith and Prodie eras in the early 20th century. All donations are gratefully accepted and tax deductible. Call Mattison’s Catering at 941-921-3400 to make reservations. The menu will reflect local meats, fish, produce and fruits to support local agriculture. The dedication is FREE and open to the public. It will be held at the front of Phillippi Estate Park near the nearly refurbished fishing pier and then all will walk the shoreline path to the Mansion for displays, exhibits, discussions and refreshments. This family oriented event will take place Saturday, October 14, 10:00 a.m. – noon. October also welcomes back THE PHILLIPPI FARMHOUSE MARKET for its 9th season. This popular market features local produce, including USDA Certified Organic produce as well as local food trucks, bakeries, local artisans with unique handicrafts, live music, the friendliest Friends of Sarasota County Parks volunteers staffing the Information tent and the Humane Society with adorable, adoptable dogs and kitties. EXTERNAL AFFAIRS Committee chairman, Larry Lawrence briefed the Board about the Landings Shopping Center and Siesta Promenade. LANDINGS SHOPPING CENTER The new breakfast and lunch restaurant, Station 400 is now open. An article in the newspaper reported Benderson applied for a new building permit on the Landing Shopping Center property. Its use etc. is not known at this time. SIESTA PROMENADE Lawrence reported the County Planning Department rejected Benderson’s 194 page application, saying it was incomplete. This will likely delay consideration by the County Commission until after the new year. The Siesta Promenade Coalition is formulating plans for “citizen action” regarding the Promenade application. Lawrence recommends the LMA Board decide how active they should be in this activity. For example, how many board members are willing to carry a placard and ask your neighbors to do so also? A resident from the Carriage House Association thanked Michael Knupp and the LMA Board for their cooperation and help with lighting and sea wall issues. Another Landing’s resident expressed concern about the storm affecting supplies surrounding a new home construction. Landings resident, Bill Whitman assured the person the owner of the new construction was contacted and those concerns were expressed.

|Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner The end of the year is approaching and now is the time to throw your hat in the ring to serve on the 2018 LRC Board of Directors. If you are interested, you must submit your name and a brief list of your qualifications to Kevin Lechlitner in the Tennis Pro Shop by November 1st. If we have more people interested in being on the Board than available openings, there will be an election at the LRC Annual Meeting in January of 2018. In the past, our guest fees increased on October 15th. Beginning this year, the change will now take place on November 1st. This is when the guest fee goes to $10 from 8:00 a.m. until noon. This will stay in effect through April 30th. After 12:00 p.m. the guest fee is $5 all year long. The fee for non-members using the facilities for exercise classes, card games and other social activities is still $3 per time. Please see me in the Tennis Pro Shop if you have any questions about the Club’s guest policy. We had 91 people at the Labor Day cookout on September 5th. It was a huge turnout for Labor Day even though alot of the members are still up north. Everyone enjoyed our traditional BBQ fare with all the standard side dishes. We even had apple pie with vanilla ice cream and cookies for dessert again. Thank you to Jim & Noxie Reese, Margaret Kahn, Patricia Sweet, Nancy Ferraro, and Niecie Handelman for their help in the kitchen, chefs Edvin and Gary for manning the grills and all the other members that assisted with the set up and clean up.

THE LANDINGS EAGLE October 2017
These big events wouldn’t be possible without the volunteer help. Thank you again. The Annual Holiday Dinner Dance is scheduled for Sunday, December 3rd at 6:00 p.m. For the 4th year in a row, Sammy J will provide the musical entertainment. As per the norm, he will be accompanied by a live saxophone player. It is a wonderful addition to the evening. Chef James Riegel from Black Tie Catering will be back for the 7th consecutive year. He always does a fantastic job catering the food. I look forward to seeing the new menu he comes up with. It should be another spectacular year-end party that you don’t want to miss. The event registration sheet will be in the Pro Shop by November 1st. Seating is limited so be sure to sign up early. On a more somber note, we lost a long-time employee in September. After nearly 8 years at the Club, Hans Behr has moved on to the next chapter in his life. He was a wonderful employee that was well liked by the staff and all the members that knew him. We will certainly miss his good nature and smiling face. On behalf of the staff, I’d like to wish “my friend” Hans and his wife Xiomara the best of luck in all their future endeavors. Finding a replacement for Hans won’t be easy; however, I believe we are off to a good start. Eduardo Arce is the latest addition to our team here. He is originally from Cuba but has lived in Sarasota for the last 10 years. Eduardo even has some clay court maintenance experience on his resume. When you get the chance, please join me in welcoming Eduardo to The Landings.

Racquet Club News
By Dick Bayles I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about Irma, so I’ll report only that the Club fared well, except for the loss of three canopies – one on the pool deck and two at court 5. We are evaluating alternatives that will be more tolerant of wind conditions. Hans, the longest-serving member of our maintenance staff left in early September to pursue other opportunities. We tried to dissuade him, without success. Please welcome his replacement, Eduardo, who had court experience at Serendipity. The board will review a first version of our 2018 budget at its September meeting. It will be adopted at the October meeting for the Assessments to be mailed before the annual Father/Son tournament in November. The preliminary version calls for no increase in our 2017 Annual Assessment of $1,244. However, I expect that an increase will be necessary in 2019. If you are interested in participating in the Club’s management, there are four seats up for election in January 2018. If you want to explore this opportunity, please let Kevin or I know before November 1st.

Welcome back to those who are joining us again from other homes for the season. This year’s US Open was a good example of how important it is to use spin with today’s modern racquets. Rafa and Sloane Stephens both use a lot of spin on their shots to keep the ball in play while still being able to play with controlled aggression. While their main spin of choice is top spin, I believe every club player should know at least one spin; preferably slice (also called under spin or back spin). This is the easiest spin to learn and master at the Club level. It starts with having the correct grip. The continental grip (also called the hammer grip) makes it easy to create this spin. The key is starting slightly above the ball and hitting downward and through the ball. The slice gives you the ability to use more of the full court to your advantage. You can hit the ball deep with slice or hit sharp angles, drop shots, lobs and you can chip and charge and keep the ball low and out of your opponent’s strike zone. Also, when you receive a low ball at the net, you can volley with slice to clear the net. As you hear me say on the court, “spin keeps it in” and “that stayed in because of spin” and “if you want to win, use spin”. We welcome John Janes back from Nantucket. John is available for lessons beginning October 9th. I’m looking forward to a great season of tennis. Thanks and see you on the court!

As you are all aware, Sarasota and The Landings were spared from the bulk of damage caused by hurricane Irma. Some trees, and for the Racquet Club, three canopies, were the extent of significant damage. About sixty homes in Landings North were without power for a relatively short while (it didn’t feel like to them, however). Landings Boulevard was blocked by a downed tree for a time, but it could be bypassed by other streets. The rainfall, while not as strong as in some areas, did highlight a couple of drainage problems, some of which we knew about beforehand. I thank the security staff and especially David Jacaruso, our maintenance chair, and Michael Knupp, our Lakes & Drainage chair, for their extra efforts before and after the storm. While we had to open all the gates due to the County’s evacuation order, to my knowledge there were no security incidents while they were open, and security operations began without any problems. I also want to thank Mark Bower and his company, DesignScapes, for providing rapid assistance to LHA owners who lost trees and for providing LHA and other of our associations with storm debris removal that couldn’t be handled by LHA owners’ lawn maintenance contractors. So, what have we learned from this experience? • Our storm plan called for an automated call to all residents notifying them of the emergency and that security operations had been shut down. The thirty seconds allowed for the call was inadequate and even that message reached less than half of the numbers we tried. Continued on the next page

[I was getting telephone calls after the storm was over from people who didn’t get or listen to their voice-mail, but called my number.] • On the other hand, our ability to reach 624 of our 700 owners by e-mail was very successful and, apparently, appreciated. It reinforces the need for us to have a contact e-mail address for every resident. We have started trying to collect e-mail addresses from those for whom we have none. If they don’t personally use e-mail, we are asking them to provide an address for someone they trust to contact them in the event of an emergency. • We will develop a means of notifying affected residents when one or more of our several sewer lift stations is without power. If they are, it results in a backup of sewage; we need to be able to advise affected residents. We used the e-mail capability of our internal web site (insidethelandings. com) to send the messages. While this guarantees they will be sent (a normal e-mail provider will not permit a user to send 800 messages), the recipient’s e-mail provider or software may move these messages to a Junk Mail or Spam folder. Please see the article in this issue describing the problem and possible solutions. The internal web site was invaluable in reaching our owners. The LMA budgeting process began in August and a preliminary budget (included on the left) presented to the Board at its September meeting. This budget calls for the first substantial increase in the assessment since 2008. The $171.00 increase is attributable to both normal increases in operating expenses ($45.00) and an increase in the reserve portion ($126.00). The reserve increase is virtually all due to the need for 1) a repaving of Peregrine Point Road & Court in 2019, earlier than contemplated in the original reserve analysis; and 2) a recognition of drainage problems that weren’t addressed in that analysis. The engineering, bidding and selection of contractor for the 2019 work will be done in 2018. This is to ensure our ability to have the work done at an appropriate time of year and to a standard that will ensure that the roads have appropriate useful life. We are continuing to evaluate our long-term road resurfacing plan and, for years following 2019, will ask for involvement from our associations with respect to a proposed schedule.

162/168 Beach Road
By Rachel Brown Hackney
|County Commission says owners of two Siesta Key parcels can take the county’s offer for the land or take the county to court On a 4-1 vote, the Sarasota County Commission essentially told the owners of two parcels on Siesta Key’s Beach Road that they can accept the $2,850,000 the county is willing to pay for the property, or they can file suit against the county for preventing them from building homes on the Gulf-front land. The board members also made it clear on Sept. 13 that they would not impose restrictions sought by the owner of the parcel at 168 Beach Road — Wendy B. Cooper, trustee of the Burton M. Cooper Credit Shelter Trust No. 1 — if the county ends up buying that land. The commissioners further directed staff to make the offer again in a timely fashion. A county staff report provided to the commission in advance of the regular meeting on Sept. 13 said the trust had requested designation of that property as a preserve, “with the only allowable improvement” to be a 10-foot-wide walkway from Beach Road “toward the Gulf of Mexico along the northerly boundary of the Property.” The memo added, “An additional restrictive condition states that
Sarasota County remove all invasive vegetation on the Property within one year of purchase,” and if the county could not accomplish the work within that timeframe, “the owner of 145 Beach Road would have the right to remove the invasive vegetation at the county’s expense.” The owner of the property at 145 Beach Road also is Wendy B. Cooper, trustee of the Burton M. Cooper Credit Shelter Trust No. 1, county property records show. The restrictions were part of a verbal counter offer the county received from the owners of the two parcels on April 27. Ronald and Sania Allen of Osprey, who own the 162 Beach Road land, wanted $1.7 million for it, the staff report noted, while Cooper wanted $1.8 million, for a total of $3.5 million. After two failed motions from Commissioner Michael Moran and Commissioner Nancy Detert, a motion by Commissioner Alan Maio prevailed at the conclusion of almost one hour and 10 minutes of discussion on Sept. 13. Maio called for repeating the county’s March offer, with “no … strings attached.”
Commissioner Charles Hines seconded the motion, which won approval from all the board members except Detert. The county would pay $1,400,000 for 162 Beach Road and $1,450,000 for 168 Beach Road. Detert made the first motion, which called for the board to inform the owners that the county was not interested in moving forward with the acquisitions. That died for lack of a second. Moran later made a motion calling for the board to split the difference between county staff’s March offer and the owners’ April counter offer. That would give the Allens $1,550,000, he said, while the trust would receive $1,625,000. It died for lack of a second, too. During the discussion, Hines, especially, focused on the fact that Sarasota County Property Appraiser Office records show that the Allens paid $5.4 million for the parcels at 162 and 168 Beach Road in May 2009, but the land never has been valued close to that amount. “It does not make sense,” Hines

added, noting that the highest value the Property Appraiser’s Office ever gave the 162 Beach Road land was $1,215,100 in 2014. In fact, Hines pointed out, the 2017 value of the parcel is $137,500. The current value of the land at 168 Beach Road, according to the Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s Office, is $140,500. Yet, the $5.4-million figure “is still being used today against us, to say, ‘You guys are getting a good deal,’” Hines continued. “I would like to buy these two properties, but not at this price and not with these stipulations.” William Merrill III of the Icard Merrill firm in Sarasota, who represents the Allens, explained that after the commission denied the Allens’ last petition for a Coastal Setback Variance to build a house on the 162 Beach Road parcel — in October 2015 — the Allens were able to get the taxable value of the property lowered. Addressing Merrill, who also was speaking for Wendy Cooper’s attorney, Hines said that the county’s offer is “cash in the bank.” Continued on the next page
Continued from the previous page
If the Allens and Cooper do not want to accept that, Hines added, they can file suit against the county over the economic value of the land, and “let the lawyers fight that out.” However, he continued, if the Allens and Cooper took the county’s offer, that would “put money in their pocket very quickly; a lot of money.” If they choose to file suit against the county, Hines also pointed out, they run the risk of having the court rule for the county. “I agree with that,” Chair Paul Caragiulo responded. Since he was elected to the board in 2012, Hines pointed out, he has heard four petitions for county Coastal Setback Variances from the Allens, who sought first to build two homes — one each on the 162 and 168 Beach Road parcels and, later, just on the 162 Beach Road land. The commission denied their request each time, he added, because the construction would have been fully seaward of the Gulf Beach Setback Line (GBSL). That line was implemented to preserve the coastal environment — including dunes — and offer protection to nearby property owners when storms batter the island. Hines acknowledged that the board has allowed some structures, such as pools, to
View of the vacant lot located near beach access #4
be built partly beyond the GBSL. “But we’ve kind of held the line when it comes to living structures in this situation.” Referring to the Beach Road parcels, he added, “The entire property is past the Gulf Beach Setback Line.” Detert also commented on an assertion Merrill made regarding the board’s granting of CSV petitions: “I’m always shocked when Mr. Merrill keeps pointing out that 90% of the time we grant variances. … I think we ought to work on that number to make it 20% of the time, because, obviously, we’re doing something wrong. So it would be in Mr. Merrill’s best interest to quit saying that.” Merrill told the board that the Allens had evacuated to North Carolina before Hurricane Irma struck, and he had been unable to reach them for the past week. He indicated, therefore, that he was not certain what their response would be to the board’s decision.

Candy Can Be A Holiday TRICK! Eating sweets causes damaging acids to form in the mouth. These acids continue to affect the teeth for at least 20 minutes before they are neutralized. Sugar-free gum is effective in combating the bacteria in plaque and fighting the acid that eats away at enamel. The chewing motion also stimulates the flow of saliva, which helps cleanse the teeth. Another option is to allow candy that melts and disappears quickly. The longer teeth are exposed to sugar, the longer bacteria can feed on it, which could produce cavities. The best way to protect teeth from decay is to have candy in small portions at limited times, such as after a meal, as dessert or at regular snack times. Allowing your child to choose between these types of sweeets and limiting the amount they consume will help reduce future problems...

A giant palm by our front entry split in half and fell on our relatively new roof, making a hole in our garage. Since there were no tarps to be had, I used a waterproof tablecloth weighted down with some bricks. It worked well -- and better than the mattress liner I tried first!
Storm Plan
Continued from cover story
The project was spurned by one consequence of Irma. “About 60 private homes in The Landings north, lost power for about two days,” Bayles said. “One consequence of that was a sewer lift station was impacted by that, and of course it backed up. Once the power came back on, it was fine. “If we know power is out at a certain lift station we can send an email to impacted residents notifying them to use water sparingly,” including not flushing toilets. The LMA also worked to implement a plan to arrange for storm debris pickup for single-family residences. Sarasota County does not collect storm debris from private roads. After Irma, the Landings Homeowners Association arranged for a contractor to collect the storm debris for its owners, as lawn maintenance con t r a ct or s g e n e r al l y aren’t equipped to remove that quantity of material. Restaurant/Fish Market Serves Up a Big Dose of Seafood Freshness Living in Florida, you expect to find fresh seafood no matter where you dine. If you are a local seafood lover, you probably have a mental list of go-to restaurants which serve the freshest seafood. This new, up and coming restaurant/fish market will undoubtedly find a place on your list. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill, located at 7119 S. Tamiami Trail, just south of Stickney Point Road in the Buccaneer Plaza, is a casual restaurant/market with indoor and outdoor seating for close to 30. The staff is very accommodating and looking to please the patrons. When the sides didn’t meet the dietary needs of one of our party, they offered off the menu choices. The Restaurant is a small storefront location that you need to know is there or you will miss it. Make the effort and try this place if you are looking for great food, fresh fish and pleasant staff. Did I mention all of this at a very good price. !!!

Start Your Morning on the Right Track at Station 400 There once was a time when all businesses were family businesses, where relatives worked together and as a matter of pride gave their customers/neighbors the very best they possibly could provide. There was no anonymous “they” hovering in some other state making decisions in a corporate office that knew nothing of the towns where their stores were placed, and the people running these shops were not only part of the local business world but of the community they served. What a great time that was, before cold, impersonal chains ruled the business world. Husband and wife Deen and Kelly Fox worked in that corporate world, she in marketing and he for 30 years in the world of big chain restaurants. The hours were long, the cause not their own, and they knew they could do better. Could have better. Could give better. Firm believers in giving back to the community, they take pride in consistently supporting local charities, schools, first responders, sponsoring little league teams, and their very special charity of choice, The Mark Wandall Foundation (a nonprofit providing support and assistance to grieving children who have lost a family member or guardian). So they walked away from the corporate safety net and started their own business. And not just any business, but one of the riskiest and most competitive businesses: a restaurant. It was a business they knew and loved but wanted to do their own way, as something that instead of keeping them away from their family would give them something to work on together. When they found the two Station 400 restaurants on the market they were drawn to the picturesque vintage downtown Sarasota railroad station in which the original was housed, as well as the wealth of possibilities offered by its sister restaurant in the upscale Sarasota/Manatee Lakewood Ranch community. Sticking with the kind of “simple” that’s actually sometimes a rather complicated commitment, they chose what and whom they knew and trusted. Local sourcing for their menu went right down to using local honey, and the downtown general manager who just happened to be the longtime friend who initially introduced them. (Talk about job security!) After a while they were looking at a mid-Sarasota location on U.S. 41 known as The Landings Plaza, located at 4832 S. Tamiami Trail. The plaza, named for the gracious residential neighborhood it borders and serves, had seen some businesses come and go through the years, and that included a few restaurants. So what made them dare to step into a space just barely cleared of the ghosts of restaurants past? “It was when it became a Benderson property” Kelly explains simply. “We were acquainted with
the Bendersons, and we knew how properties responded to their touch; it was like King Midas, just turning them to gold.” So they took the leap, transforming the space to a welcoming contemporary French-flavored décor. A model train runs slowly around the walls and past other railroad-related art that keep with the station atmosphere of the original sister restaurant. The decision to be a 7 a.m.to 2:30 p.m. breakfast, brunch, and lunch room was one designed to allow them and their staff a life outside of work, allowing ample time with family despite being open seven days a week (and an hour or so later in the busy season). In the case of the owners it almost seems unnecessary: son Austin is an assistant manager while son Justin is a server; youngest boy Prestin is only five and has already declared in a “What I Want to Be When I Grow Up” school assignment that it’s the restaurant life for him as well. The Landings location managing partner, Kirk Tyree, is a family friend who had worked with Deen at a chain restaurant before they jumped ship to take the restaurant biz to a more personal level. But no amount of determination, good intention, and dashing decor is enough to make a restaurant a success if the food isn’t exceptional. Having lived in Sarasota since 2002 had given the Foxes ample opportunity to become familiar with the restaurants around town and what they offered. In a field this competitive and a town this saturated with places to eat, you’d have to be very, very good to survive. And they are. Station 400 devotees are in love with the Truffles Eggs Benedict and the Fried Green Tomato BLT, but if you’d like to try something different, the Pancake Parlor allows you to choose just one, ranging from Bacon and Salted Caramel to Tiramisu, or plain Buckwheat or Buttermilk. The Mimosa “Craft Concoctions” include: Blood Orange, Hibiscus; Pomegranate Juice; Elderflower, Cucumber, Lemon; Blackberry Bramble; and various seasonal specials. (Check the menu on their website! www. station400.com) No matter what you select from the menu, one thing you’re sure to have at Station 400 is a great time. All aboard!

One sister, Hannah, 17 • Do you have any pets? 2 cats, Angel and Zak and a dog, Monte • How long have you lived in The Landings? We’ve lived here about 6 years. • What do you like the most about living here? I love how spacious it is when I go for a bike ride or a walk. It’s very comfortable and the people are all very neighborly. There is a gym and tennis courts too. I used to play tennis a lot starting when I was 8. I did it for a few years then stopped. I’d like to get back into it again. • Are you learning any languages? I’m taking Spanish 1 now and would like to become fluent in many languages so that when I travel to those countries, I can speak the language. I’d like to learn French, German, and Chinese too. • Do you play any instruments? I am learning how to play the piano from watching YouTube. • How do you like high school? My classes are interesting. It will be a struggle, though, because I’m a freshman. Most people are afraid of high school because it’s a change but it’s going fine. The school is holding auditions right now for The Crucible and also for James and the Giant Peach so that’s exciting. • Favorite ice cream? Vanilla with sprinkles • Favorite school subject? Musical theater • Favorite TV show? 90210 • Favorite app? Snapchat. I use this to communicate with my friends and send them images, emoji’s, and funny things. • Favorite Sport? Tap Dancing. Everything, Everything • If you could change your name, what would it be? Rosie • What is your biggest worry? My biggest worry would be that I don’t do very well in the business that I pursue. • What is your goal? To master being good at make-up and hair. I have been learning from YouTube. My favorite YouTuber is Jeffree Star. He is a make-up artist. I’d also like to move to Rochester, NY. There is a school there for cosmetology that I’d like to attend. Rochester also has skiing and it feels like home there. • If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A cheetah because they are fast and beautiful animals. • If your pets could talk, what would they say? “Give me food. I’m hungry. Get away from me. I want more food. Pet me now. Come sleep with me. Come play with me.” • What is the greatest thing ever invented? Food • What is the most important issue for young people today? The biggest issue is staying away from drugs, drinking, and smoking. Live your life to the fullest without endangering yourself. • One word to describe you would be? Energetic! • What do you like doing in your spare time? I like going to the gym and working out. It makes me feel good. I have also been busy performing in a few plays while at Sarasota Academy of the Arts. I was in Once Upon a Mattress and played Winnifred, Anything Goes as Reno Sweeney, and 42nd Street as Dorothy Brock. • What was your favorite thing that you did this year? I started making my own clothes. I’d like to get a sewing machine and continue.

Julia Lauren Beatt • What do you want to be when you grow up? A cosmetologist or make-up artist. • If you could fix or get rid of one bad thing in the world, what would it be? I’d stop people from getting sick by getting a cure for all sicknesses. • What do kids your age think about most? Sleep and food! • Tell me about your Hurricane Irma experience? My Aunt B and my Mom were freaking out. We went out shopping to get prepared, thinking we were going to stay here. The next day, when we saw that the storm changed direction, we went to Orlando and stayed at a hotel with our friends. We played and watched movies all day. It was scary because the whole hotel was shaking but it was a fun experience too. • Tell me something you are thankful for? I am thankful for my family. They help me through so much and they give me good advice. They make me a better person. • What is the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do? My great grandma died. I was very close to her. Saying good-bye to her was hard. • What is the greatest thing about being you? I have a wide variety of imagination. My imagination goes everywhere. I have a lot of thoughts and think about a lot. My mind is never not busy!
Andrejs, Jeffrey and Bonnie Cummings’ Experience in the Phillippi Shores Elementary Shelter Submitted by Bonnie Cummings Although we were not in the mandatory evacuation zone, we decided Saturday afternoon to go to the school shelter. We took a blow up mattress and Jeffrey’s sleeping bag and of course a cooler full of water and fixings for sandwiches. The line to sign in was not too long, and we saw one of Jeffrey’s teachers from 3 years ago and got a big hug from her. We were allowed 20 square feet each and proceeded to one of the classrooms and set up our little cubicle. Jeffrey immediately made a friend with an older boy that loved to play video games - so we went home and got his Xbox. There were a total of 22 people in our classroom. We ran into quite a few other Landings families and traded stories. The cafeteria was open for a dinner of chicken fingers, potatoes and applesauce. Time to bunk down and lights out. Andrejs and I found out half way through the evening that we had a leak in our blow up mattress!!! Not good. The cafeteria served breakfast Sunday
morning, then delivered sandwiches for lunch as they were closing down the cafeteria. For dinner, Andrejs and I made ham sandwiches for those in our shelter that did not have food. At around 7 o’clock a transformer blew and we lost power! No lights, no air conditioning. One family had a battery operated lantern and invited Jeffrey to play board games with their two boys. Then we all tried to settle in and get some sleep, but that was pretty difficult. We had quite a chorus of snorers in our room, and a lot of restless folks. As soon as daylight came we packed up and went home (sweet home). We were very fortunate that we had power and no trees in our pool, just a lot of debris. Overall we ALL were very lucky that the hurricane took a turn to the East. There were approximately 1,500 people in the shelter, and we are SO THANKFUL TO PHILLIPI SHORES SCHOOL, the sign-in volunteers, cafeteria workers, army and Red Cross for the wonderful job they tirelessly did.
The Recipe Corner |The “Kitchen Ladies” Recipe Compiled by Dee Ricapito Linda Hennessy’s - Elegant Fig Appetizer, with Goat Cheese and Almonds Linda loves to cook and said: “This recipe is SO easy, and always a crowd pleaser! Something about the contrast of sweet and salty is yummy!” Can easily adjust the portions for your taste. Ingredients: • 12 fresh figs (dried work fine, see * below) • 4 ounces herbed goat cheese (Chevre) • 24 dry roasted whole almonds • Honey • Balsamic vinegar Directions: (You can do this ahead of time and keep in the refrigerator until guests arrive) Cut figs in 1/2 so largest surface area is on top, cut side up. Top each 1/2 fig with 1/2-1 teaspoon of goat cheese. (depends on fig size and your preferences) Pinch cheese so it is affixed to fig top. Press one whole almond on top of each. Note: I like to cook them on the non-stick foil, easy to remove and easy to clean. Preheat Broiler. Broil 2-3 mins, or to your liking. Cheese should be soft, and almonds dark brown (some guests say they prefer them burnt). Arrange figs on a serving platter and drizzle lightly with honey and balsamic vinegar (a spoon helps!). Serve warm and enjoy! * Note: this recipe works well with fresh figs (hard to find off season) or dried figs. If you use dried figs, get the largest size you can find. I use the light brown Calimyra dried figs Trader Joe’s carries.

Grandkids, Collin Tye (15) & Quincy Tye (12) from Chicago, IL, spent a week with Jeff and Mary Kay Crotty while their Mom & Dad (Mary Kay & Jeff’s daughter, Julie & her husband, Roger) were in Mexico celebrating their 20th Anniversary. Says Mary Kay, “As you can imagine, we had soooo much fun with them!” Jeff is an avid fisherman so we took the kids down to the Gazebo by the intercoastal so they could do some fishing. We ran into Norm Olshansky, another avid fisherman. As he was fishing, he asked Quincy to hold his pole so he could get something out of his tackle box. He then told her to start reeling in the line...all of a sudden a huge catfish appeared! Quincy was very surprised & excited...Norm, of course, knew he had a fish on the line...he just wanted her to have the thrill of reeling it in. He then did the same thing for Collin about 10 minutes later. They were so excited about the adventure! Norm is a very generous, caring man and so nice to the kids. Photos by Mary Kay Crotty.
Happiness is…Working Together At Abel’s Ice Cream, owners Jerry and Jill Williams have made no secret out of the fact they have the BEST customers in the world, but they wanted to take an opportunity to talk about their amazing employees! “We thought it would be fun to let you get to know a few of those young smiling faces you see behind the counter just a little bit better,” Jerry said. So, let’s start with their favorite Abel’s Ice Cream Flavors: Marina: Cookie Dough, because you get a piece of dough in every bite! Austin: Snickelicious, because of the combination of caramel with the chocolate and peanuts Parker: English Toffee, because it tastes so good! As a nod to our great crew, Cookie Dough (Cookie flavored ice cream loaded with chunks of cookie dough and sweet chocolate chips), Snickelicious (Snickers Candy Bar flavored ice cream filled with Snickers candy bar pieces and a thin ribbon of caramel), and English Toffee ‘N Cream (Sweet toffee ice cream loaded with Heath candy bar pieces) will be our featured flavors for the month of October, so be sure to stop by to see why these ice cream aficionados love them so much! We also asked the gang to share a funny or memorable story with us. Marina: My funniest customer experience is how many times I get asked, ‘you must have a strong arm, huh?’ In one day, I counted 32 times, and I told the 32nd person that day and they laughed so hard!
941-921-5700
Austin: I think the funniest moment was when this kid opened jelly beans and they went everywhere. Parker: I have lots of funny moments, like when someone tells a joke, or someone’s spoon breaks. But my best one has to be when people pay for each other and the group is surprised. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of these young people, and if they’re the future, we’re in good hands! In the wake of Irma’s unwelcome visit, the Williams also wanted to take this opportunity to express their gratitude to this incredible, supportive community. “Since our move from the Midwest two years ago, this was our first hurricane experience and we had no idea what to expect,” Jill explained. “What we found were friends who took us in to their home to get us out of evacuation zones, and business associates who kindly offered generators to keep the ice cream cold. What a blessing. In just these few short years, this area has become home. We can’t imagine living anywhere else.” They also were encouraged to see the entire area banding together. “I went out looking for people to help, and everywhere I went, people were helping neighbors and strangers alike,” Jerry added. Come share your stories with the gang at Abel’s. They’d love to see you! Abel’s Ice Cream is located at 1886 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota in the South Bridge Plaza. Open Sunday through Thursday from Noon-9:30 pm, and Friday and Saturday from Noon-10 pm.
