FRED AND JAN PUHLFUERST Fred & Jan Puhlfuerst met in college at Montclair State University in 1956 and have been together ever since. While in college, Fred majored in Industrial Education. Jan graduated with degrees in English, Drama, and Speech Pathology. They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this July. They are the parents of two daughters and have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They were thrilled when both families visited them at Christmas. Prior to moving to Tara Woods in 2001, they spent their winter breaks looking at retirement places in Florida. When they got to Tara Woods, Jan said, “This is the place!” The family lived in Saudi Arabia in the mid-sixties, where Fred taught work skills to Saudi men. They returned to the United States during the Six Day War in 1967. Scary but exciting. Back in the United States, Jan and Fred and their two daughters traveled to many states during the summer. They were also counselors for young people through Operation

Friendship, an organization providing three-week international student exchanges with several European countries, including The Netherlands and England. In more recent years, Fred and Jan attended many trips through the Elderhostel Program, now known as Road Scholar. Through these educational programs, Jan and Fred visited nearly every state in the United States. Several years before moving to Florida, Fred was named New Jersey Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year. He also served as a town councilman in Fair Haven, NJ, where they resided for forty years before moving to Tara Woods. Both served as Elders in their home church. Jan is also a certified Lay Pastor and has preached and counseled church members in difficult situations. Both of the Puhlfuersts have been active in Tara Woods from the start. Jan has been involved with the Entertainers, Chorus, Red Hat Ladies, and was Editor in Chief of The Columns for several years. They belong to the New York/New Jersey Club, where Jan was “Queen of Trivia”. She

is an avid reader. In the past, Jan was a soloist at church and in the Chorus. Fred is deeply involved with many things in Tara Woods. He served as President of the Homeowners Association for more than three years, was Tennis Team Captain and is still an avid tennis player. He has organized and presided over the Pancake Breakfast for seventeen years. He is a talented handyman and even added two site-built rooms to

Email ber and December meetings are under our belt and there is a lot happening during 2020. Since the November meeting put out a significant amount of information to protect you and your wallet as well, and our December meeting provided valuable information for our Veterans, I thought I would highlight some of the important information that came from these meetings. The first meeting had to do with a number of telephone and computer scams that we receive. The revolving theme is NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR INFORMATION TO ANYONE OVER THE PHONE OR VIA EMAIL. Some possible scams may be from Social Security or the IRS asking for your information. Neither organization will contact you by telephone or email. HANG UP

Don’t Play Politics with Your Portfolio You’re probably aware this is an election year. During the next several months, the candidates will discuss issues that should greatly interest you as a citizen. But as an investor, how concerned should you be with the results of the presidential and congressional elections? Maybe not as much as you might think. At different times, the financial markets have performed well and poorly under different administrations and when different parties have controlled Congress. And after all the votes are counted, outcomes in the investment markets can be unpredictable. Consequently, you’ll be helping yourself greatly by not making big moves in your portfolio in anticipation of new legislation or political moves down the line. Of course, that’s not to say that nothing emerging from Washington could ever have an impact on your investment decisions. For example, if a future president and Congress decide to change the capital gains tax rate, it could affect some of your choices, such as which stocks and stockbased mutual funds you should buy, and how long you should hold them. Overall, though, your investment results will ultimately depend on actions you can take, including these:

Making changes for the right reasons – While the results of an election may not be a good reason to make changes in your invest • ment portfolio, other factors can certainly lead you to take steps in this direction. For one thing, as you get closer to retirement, you

may want to shift some – though certainly not all – of your investment dollars from more growth-oriented vehicles to more conservative ones. Conversely, if you decide, well in advance, that you might want to retire earlier than you originally thought, you may need to invest more aggressively, being aware of the increased risk involved.

Following a long-term strategy – In pretty much all walks of life, there are no shortcuts to success – and the same is true with invest• ing. You need to follow a long-term strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, and you need the patience and perseverance to keep investing in all markets – up, down and sideways.

Avoiding mistakes – Many people think of an investment mistake as failing to “get in on the ground floor” of some company that • ultimately grew to huge proportions. But it’s pretty hard to become an early investor in companies like these, many of which start

out as privately held businesses without any stockholders. Furthermore, companies with shorter track records can be much more unpredictable investments. However, you do want to avoid some real mistakes, such as chasing “hot” stocks. By the time you hear about them, they may already be cooling off, and they might not even be appropriate for your needs. Another mistake: failing to diversify your portfolio. If you only own one type of asset, such as growth stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn.

Spreading your dollars over a wide range of investments can help lower your risk exposure. (However, diversification by itself can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses.) After Election Day, regardless of the outcome, you can help keep your portfolio on track by not playing politics with it. ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES - COMING UP IN FEBRUARY! There will not be a Valentines Party this year, so make your own plans for a special way to celebrate your significant other or other special people in your life on Friday, February 14th. – There will be an opportunity to see the Florida Everblades Ice Hockey Team in action on Friday, February 28th, at 7:30 PM at Hertz Arena. We’ve had about twenty people attend in the past few years and had a great time rooting on the Everblades. There is more information in this issue of The Columns and on a poster in the Clubhouse. It was done quickly and efficiently thanks to so many helping hands. – Thank you to Ron Proulx and his crew for taking care of the lake Christmas trees; preparing them to go in and taking them out in January. They just

don’t appear in the lakes. There is careful planning and preparation to make them look their best for the community to enjoy. – Thank you to Bob Clark, Ed Pollitt, Ron Proulx and Carl Marquis for removing Santa’s sleigh from the Clubhouse and transporting it back to the storage shed to await next December’s visit from Santa. WHAT TO DO Lawns: Fertilize lawns this month. Choose one (not a weed & feed) with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled- release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. Grasses for Florida lawns Bahiagrass , Bermudagrass , Centipedegrass , St. Augustinegrass, and Zoysiagrass. Prune Roses: Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin eight to nine weeks after pruning. Fertilize Shrubs and Palms: Spread fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Hold off pruning cold-damaged branches until new growth starts. Lawn Weeds: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer (not a weed and feed) to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4-5 days. Timing is important for good control. Spray: When avocados and mango have lost 2/3 of blossoms,

spray copper fungicide to control anthracnose. Fruits: If not done in January, fertilize fruit trees including citrus now. WHAT TO PLANT Bedding Plants: Good performers in South Florida’s mild winter include impatiens, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Divide large crowded clumps. Provide adequate water to establish. Some to try are Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Ground Covers: Consider replacing areas of grass with drought tolerant, low maintenance ground covers. Vegetables: Begin planting warm season crops this month. Sweet potato, cantaloupe, eggplant and squash can be started while temperatures are cool. Well, things are in full swing with the arrival of snowbirds from the north. They are as excited as children at Christmas to be away from the cold and snow. The Club had a Christmas dinner at Dina’s at Sabal Springs and it sounds like a good time was had by all and the food was great – something to keep in mind for another gathering. Thank you to the crew who managed the

tree decorating/undecorating and provided the punch and cookies. February looks to be a busy month with Appreciation Day, one of the fun-filled days, lots of games, bingo, lunch and a social evening. We are hosting a game for two and one-half hours after lunch and could still use some help in managing the crowds that I know will come to our site! We will have cookies, music and lots of fun. If you would like to help out, please email bzztoy@hotmail.com or call David or Brenda Redgers at 239-599-8450. We are looking for hosts for the February and March

Canadian Club dinners – whether you would like to organize a meal, only the entree, or arrange an evening out. Please let Patty Thompson, Dave Sharp or Brenda Redgers know. We have a number of new Canadians joining us and we are looking forward to meeting them. If anyone knows of new people, please let Dave Sharp know so we can update their information. Enjoy the season and get involved in all the activities that are offered in the community. See you soon. Brenda Redgers

If several members wish to join together on an appetizer tray with various foods, we encourage you to be adventuresome! Charcuterie Board anyone? A sign-up sheet is posted in the Clubhouse for you to indicate what you will be bringing and what you will assist with. At this meeting, we select hosts for the upcoming year

starting in October, through April 2021. So, start thinking about what you’d like to work on and various themes for our meetings ahead. As always, we welcome all folks from New York and New Jersey – especially new residents and renters. Your hosts for the evening are Marge Datz, Bart Leneker and Miriam Norris. Marge Datz

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB NEWS After a very busy month of January, it is good to know that the only scheduled meeting is Sunday, February 16th, at 4:00 PM. The menu item is chili along with the fixings such as

MIDWEST CLUB

The Tree is down. The “Roaring Twenties” have begun. The Midwest Club thanks all the members who helped dismantle the tree on January 4th.

Even though the holidays are over, the fun continues. On January 10th the Club met to celebrate all things football. Whether the team was pro, college, high school, or flag, Midwest members wore their sports apparel proudly. Football trivia was played, and delicious appetizers prepared by the amazing chefs in the Midwest Club were consumed. Dale Holat graciously

agreed to set up a football pool for the Club. Thank you, Dale. The lucky winners will appear in The Columns next month. Our meeting on Friday, February 21st, will find the tables festooned in green, gold, and purple for Mardi Gras. Start stocking up on your beads and masks now. Debbie Polenska

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB

by Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor Welcome back to our Winter residents! The Computer Club has begun a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved

for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we start at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. The General topics cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, such as Windows, working with photos, multi-media, tablets, cell phones and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the

bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 239-652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you.

BOXES FOR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN The time is coming up for getting those names and addresses to Beth Ferris, for men and women you know who are in the service, so that we can send them a box with cookies and other items. Please get the information to me by Saturday, March 14th. This is an annual project of the Inspirations Group here in Tara Woods. We don’t meet monthly any longer but have continued with doing our service projects. We would appreciate contributions to help with the cost of mailing the boxes and for purchasing the items. Those can be given to Beth Ferris. Some of the ladies from the Clubhouse Ministries group also bake cookies and I thank them for their help. The boxes are very much appreciated, and we thank you for your help and support. We will be packing up the boxes on March 21st, after the Saturday Morning Coffee meeting. Thank you. Beth Ferris

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION The next Tennis Association Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 23rd, at 5:45 PM. APPRECIATION DAY Appreciation Day this year is on Saturday, February 22nd. We hope the weather is nice so everyone can get out and enjoy the variety of games that are offered. As for the games that have been played on the tennis courts in the past, there is the “Hole in the Board” game, the “Bowling” tennis game, and the “Hit the Chairs” game. As of this writing, I don’t have information as to who the chairperson is for each of these games this year. Another possibility for a tennis game is to hit a tennis ball into a container similar to our blue recycling bins. (Putting a thick towel in the bottom of the container would help keep the balls from bouncing out.) This game could be played on Court 4. Please consider volunteering to run a game like this. If you have any other ideas for another tennis game, please let someone know. Wouldn’t it be great to have a different game on all four tennis courts! We will need volunteers to work at these tennis games, so if you’re asked to help out, please say “Yes”. The more helpers there are, the easier the job. – Linda Engel

TENNIS LEAGUES

WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s Team – Angels On December 12th – before the break for Christmas and New Year’s Day – we played against the first place Pine Lakes Panthers. We won five of the first five sets and were midway through the sixth set when the rain started coming down, slowly at first, and then steady, which prompted the players to leave the court. The score was three games each at that point. The make-up match was scheduled for the following week, on Wednesday, December 18th, but the weather didn’t cooperate and rain again postponed that match. The make-up match was eventually played on Thursday, December 19th, with our two players traveling

to Pine Lakes. Some of our other Angels made the short trip to cheer on their teammates. As a side note, when you start a tennis match at zero all, it is a lot different than when you start a match with the score already being 3-3. All it takes then is three games and the set could be over. Well, that didn’t happen. The Pine Lakes ladies started by serving first; they lost their service game, so we were up 4-3. Our Angels player also lost her service game, so the score went to 4-4. The same thing happened with the next two games, with each server losing their service game, so the score was then 5-5. The score eventually went to 6-6, which necessitated a tie-break. Unfortunately, the Pine Lakes ladies won that tie-break. However, we had already established first place by winning the first five sets. What an exciting day that was! Congratulations, Tara Woods Angels. A social tennis event had already been planned for that December 19th date, so after the make-up match at Pine Lakes, some ladies from both Lake Fairways and Pine Lakes drove over to Tara Woods for some fun tennis and a social gathering afterwards. Everyone brought an appetizer or dessert to share. We had a good variety of food and great camaraderie with all the players. What a fun event just before the Christmas holidays. On Thursday, January 9th, we had a home match against the team from Del Tura; this is Del Tura’s first year in the SWIFT league. We played tennis under breezy conditions, but we did win all six sets, which kept us in first place in the league. We had a great social on the Verandah with the Del Tura ladies after the tennis match. – Linda Engel SWIFT INFO Here we are, past the halfway point of our ladies’ SWIFT tennis league. So far, this season has provided us with great tennis and fellowship among our team and the ladies of the other communities. Soon we’ll be making plans for the next season, which brings me

to the annual Tara Woods Ladies tennis meeting. The meeting will take place within the first three weeks of March. There will be a posting on the Tennis Bulletin Board as well as a notice in the March issue of The Columns as to the date. We would love to have anyone interested in our tennis team to join us for the meeting. It’s the time of year when we vote on our captain, whether to have one or two teams depending on the number of players we have, and general discussions. Our tennis schedule is posted on the board by the courts, and we’d love to have you stop by and cheer us on. Hoping to see you at the courts. – Pam Ahlers

MEN’S LEAGUE

White Team – Stallions On January 7th, we had our first regular season game for the White Division. As mentioned in previous editions, all of our games before the new year were only exhibition games. It was a perfect day to play tennis. Our team did very well and we won all 6 matches. At this point, we are in first place. Go team go. Cheers. – Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers The Tara Woods Tigers have been playing well during the November-December fall period, winning 50 percent of their games which does not include a make-up game to be scheduled with the Lake Fairways Cougars in early January. That game will be at home. Our first game of the New Year was an away game with the Herons Glen Smashers; we ended up with 2 wins and we lost a tough tie-breaker. The Admiralty Admirals were up next; it was an away game on January 9th. We split that match with 3 sets each. The Tigers are playing hard and enjoying the competition. – Al Dion / Mike O’Hearn Blue Team – Mustangs On January 2nd, the Mustangs played their first home match against Lake Fairways. The match wasn’t quite fair, since the Lake Fairways

team could only come up with three team players, so we allowed them to recruit two female players and we did complete the match. Everyone had a good time playing rather than having the Lake Fairways team forfeit the match. The women played very well against our Court 2 players. The final results were that the Mustangs won all 6 sets. On January 6th we played a makeup game at Pine Lakes. The end result of the match was 4 wins for Pine Lakes and 2 wins for Tara Woods. As we continue through the season, I see progress with our Court 2 players as they continue to work together as a team. Last year, the Mustangs dominated the league. This year other communities felt that the Blue Teams could be more competitive if some White Team players moved down to Blue. By making this move, the communities are much more competitive. On January 9th, the Mustangs hosted the Herons Glen Yard Dogs

on a very windy day. Playing under these conditions takes a lot of concentration to follow the ball. Tara won the match with 4 sets; Herons Glen took 2 sets. – Mike Renzulli

ROUND ROBINS We are getting ready for the third Round Robin of the season. We will post a sign-up sheet at the tennis courts around Saturday, February 8th. The matches will be played on Sunday, February 23rd. The sign-up sheet will be taken down on Tuesday, February 18th, so sign up as soon as possible. We need time to prepare the lineups and arrange for a dinner or whatever we decide to do at the Tennis Association Meeting after the matches are completed. We also need volunteers to set things up. Give me a call at 262-594-2974 or contact me in person if you are willing to help with the activity. It is important to have people to help so we can continue with these events. – Dale Holat Submitted by Linda Engel

LEAP INTO 2020. If 2020 is telling us it’s going to be an eye opener for one and all, somehow they may be right. We are now in February and it has the fewest days of the month with 28, but this year they have an extra day the 29th, due to LEAP YEAR. We say it’s 365 days, but actually it is 365.24 days. So every four years, all though quarters do add up, (and I don’t mean a winning hand in Aggravation or dice throw in Bunco) to almost one and we get an extra day. So, once a century, on years divisible by 100, we skip. Give or take .01. What about that extra .01 day? Let’s

put our math in gear. Point-zero-days is about 11 minutes of time. No big deal over 10 or 20 years. But in 128 years it equals a whole day. Since no one wants to keep a 128-year-cycle, they instead decided to skip leap year every 100 years. So, once a century, on years divisible by 100, we skip leap year. And really, that’s still a fraction off. It would have been much closer to perfect if we skipped in skipping leap year every 500 years. But, alas, we don’t. Just like how many of you accidentally wrote 2019 in writing your bills in January. So, Leap Years are any year that can be divided exactly by 4,

ATTENTION VETERANS!! Many of you are not aware of USAA Auto and Home Insurance specifically designed for veterans AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS: spouses, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, etc. I can attest to the fact that the savings are substantial (for myself and my family) since becoming a member seven years ago. You just need to call: 1-800-531-8722 to enroll.

YOU SERVED, NOW YOU CAN SAVE! Sam Topping,U.S.Army

SHILOH SPEAKS except if it can be exactly divided by 100, it isn’t (2100, 2200, etc.). Except if it can be exactly divided by 400 then it is (2000, 2400). Try it here. 2020 divisible by 4 and not divisible by 100 equals to your 2020 is a LEAP YEAR. Whew, I guess I had to be a dog decoder to understand that one. Leap Year is known for a few things. First, it’s the year presidential elections are held. Also, for ladies who want to be untraditional, it’s a leap year custom for single women to propose to their boyfriends on February 29th. Maybe that’s why Groundhog Day still exists. They don’t want to come out until the beginning of February 2nd. This way they can hibernate until after February 29th; they don’t want to be caught by a female groundhog. A person born on February 29th may be called a “leaping” or a “leaper” technically, as a “leaping”, we have fewer anniversaries and birthdays in years (not like us canines, when a leaping becomes age 1 - they are actually 7 years old).

Other than putting your brain to work, I’m going out to hunt for Punxsutawney Phil, on Groundhog Day, Sunday, February 2nd, to see what my fellow Phil has in store. If he sees his shadow, it’s an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and I may miss him because he goes back in his hole. If he doesn’t see his shadow (cloudy day) spring is around the corner. I’m putting all my doggie treats on this theory; he doesn’t see his shadow, come on spring. For even though there is a short month of 29 days in February, other days take place during

this month, if you want to make a note. Black History Month starts February 1st; World Nutella Day, February 5th; National Pizza Day, February 9th; and who can forget my favorite sweetest day, Valentine’s Day, February 14th. “NO SWEETS PLEASE!” But I know a good doggie treat will go along with a good hug. Presidents Day, February 17th, let the RETAIL SALES begin; National Drink a Glass of Wine Day, February 18th, these are just a few dates. But on February 28th will the Guard Station in Tara Woods welcome Steve Harvey’s $5,000 a week for life from the Publisher’s Clearing House for those who are very hopeful to become the lucky winner?? WELL???? My time is up for this month of Shiloh Speaks. A reminder to pick up after us. It’s YOUR TARA WOODS COMMUNITY - RESPECT IT!!! Happy Tails. SHILOH

POKER, ANYONE ?

LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 7311614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

Unfortunately, some people who assisted in the past were unable to assist in distribution this year. Some were traveling for the holidays. I want to thank them for their support in the past and acknowledging to me that they could not help this year. I would also like to thank Lou Dunning for suggesting that Linda Hoos and The Columns distribution team could possibly assist me in getting the directories delivered. They stepped up and did a fantastic job. Many thanks to Linda Hoos, David Lindon, Louise Patterson, Sheila Harris, Janet Daily, Sue & Bob Clark, Sharon Boehlke, Gary & Bea Sponseller, Sandy Whitaker, Frank Millette, Lou & Pat Dunning and Stu Berman for helping to deliver the directories. If I missed anyone, I apologize and again thank you. They visited and attempted to deliver approximately 625 directories. At the time of this writing there are only about 60 directories left to be delivered. Missing Residents or Incorrect Information in the 2019 – 2020 Directory I would like to apologize if for some reason your resident information was not included or incorrect in this year’s directory. After some research I discovered there were some glitches in the processing. Some were software coding errors, some typo’s and some incorrect information provided to me. I take full responsibility and will make sure that the process is being addressed and will be improved for next year. Tara Woods Residents Directory Information Responsibilities Property Owners Living in Tara Woods – Property owners living in Tara Woods will be listed in the “Tara Woods Resident Directory” if they choose to. If the resident decides to have their telephone number as “unlisted” or “unpublished” the owner must provide that information to the Directory Manager. The “unlisted” or “unpublished” telephone number will only be updated in the “Resident Directory Database Only”. The property owner is responsible for also contacting the Tara Woods Office and any other organization or group where their information needs to be updated or changed.

Mrs. Doubtfire Services Housekeeping, Food Shopping Airport Runs, Dr. Appointments Runs, 100% cleaned to your satisfaction. Also; window cleaning and handy work.

Property Owners Living in Tara Woods and/or Not Living in Tara Woods. If you are a property owner and your property is being occupied by someone else (relative, friend or a rental), you “the owner” “can” be listed in the Directory. The “relative”, “friend” or “rental occupants” can also be listed in the Directory for the next publication year if they plan on occupying the property the following year. The residents’ information will be listed in “The Columns” if notification is sent to the Directory Manager. It is the owner, resident, or resident’s agent, or occupant’s responsibility to notify the Directory Manager as to any updates, corrections or changes. Thank you.

Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you. The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem.
