|Anna’s Deli A legend in its time! By Diana Colson..

Surfer Sandwich Anna’s Deli has been a Siesta Key tradition for more than 41 years. The oldest eatery on Siesta Key, it is famed for its enormous “Famous Specialty Sandwiches, especially its award winning Surfer. Anna’s has continuously received culinary accolades. For six years, it has received the “Reader’s Choice Award for Best Sandwich from the Sarasota Herald Tribune. For four years, it has received the “Best of the Best Sandwich Award from the readers of SRQ Magazine. Most recently The Surfer was voted “Best Sandwich by the readers of Sarasota Magazine. Anna’s was established in Siesta Village in 1971 by a lady named Anna James. She started this little deli in a funky old house that once stood in the spot now occupied by the Daiquiri Deck. Anna James didn’t keep her deli very long, however: she sold it to Rita and Jim Harrigan in 1973. Rita and Jim were to own the original Anna’s Deli for eighteen years, adding a second Anna’s in 1978 at the current location just south of Stickney Point Bridge. Continued on page 17A

for a lifetime. Arriving on the lovely isle of Siesta Key can be a memorable experience. A drive over the North Bridge, one of two bridges connecting the Key to the mainland, introduces the delightful scenery of boats on a tranquil aquamarine bay, palm trees bend along newly paved streets to welcome our entrance through Bay Island, surprises of tropical blooms greet us on the drive toward our rejuvenated Siesta Village, continuing past quaint bricked sidewalks, lively shops and restaurants to Siesta’s top rated beach. Yet, to offer this daily experience, there is much more than meets the eye. Built in 1972, Siesta Key’s North Bridge is 1

of only 2 entranceways to the Key. The drawbridge opens several times a day to allow passage of tall-masted sailboats and large watercraft traveling the Gulf Intra-Coastal Waterway (ICW). After decades of service, it was time for the bridge’s reinforcement and improvement. In preparation for the project, the Siesta Key Association (SKA) provided a public forum with Florida Dept. of Transportation (FDOT) engineers and County Commissioner, Nora Patterson, to discuss residents’ concerns & ideas. SKA President, Catherine Luckner, encouraged FDOT collaboration with island associations and impacted business owners, both north and south of the Key. Continued on page 11A

Another British Invasion

|The British are coming! The British are coming! Well, actually, they’re already here. The Brits have always been famous for building colonies, and Sarasota is no exception. They’ve arrived in droves, lured by our fabulous beaches and sultry clime, and somewhat familiar language. Like the rest of us, they watched the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on the telly and bought sparklers for the 4th of July. Some of these chaps from across the pond have carved out exciting new lives in the tropics. Today, a large collection of Sarasota businesses are owned and operated by people from the UK. Towards the southern end of Siesta Key we have Shelia and Mike Lewis, a couple from Cardiff, Wales. In Cardiff, Shelia had been a realtor and Mike had been an Engineer. They started coming on vacation to Sarasota in 1988, when their kids were small. “We used to do the British thing,â€? says Shelia, “a week in Orlando and a week at some Florida beach. Once we found Siesta Key, however, that was it.â€? Enticed by the temperate climate, they made the decision to start searching for a business to buy so that someday they could live full-time on Siesta. During their 2004 vacation, Mike came into Siesta Sports Rentals to rent a bike. (The shop was owned by another UK native, and had been in existence since 1995.) Mike fell into conversation with the then-owner, and found that the man wanted to sell. After six months of paperwork, they received an American Investment Visa known as the E-2, and moved to Sarasota. The Lewis’s dream had come WUXH 7RGD\ WKH\ KDYH Ă€YH HPSOR\HHV DQG WKHLU OLYHV DUH Ă€OOHG ZLWK .D\DN WRXUV 0RWRU 6FRRWHUV 6FRRWHUFDUV Tandems, Surreys, Trek Bikes, and the like. Siesta Sports Rentals is located at 6551 Midnight Pass Rd. in the middle of SOUTHBRIDGE MALL. Telephone: 941.346.1954. Paul and Carolyn Martin came to Sarasota by accident. They came off of a cruise in Miami, and drove up the West Coast of Florida looking for a holiday home. They took one look at Sarasota, loved it, and bought a house on Casey Key in 2008. Originally from Farnham in Surrey, the Martin’s and their partner, Rod Thomas, owned a “building refreshment and maintenance companyâ€? in the UK. In addition to serving other clients, they had a contract to do daily maintenance at Windsor Castle, where they were occasionally treated to a sighting of the Queen. (Parts of that medieval castle date back to the 11th century, so things are bound to crumble every now and then.) After selling their very successful company, the Martins settled in on Casey Key. “My husband is a workaholic,â€? says Carolyn. “As soon as we got here, he started thinking of a project to do in Sarasota.â€? Together the Martins and Rod Thomas decided to take on the renovation of a big old motel in Osprey that had fallen into disrepair. The project took two and a half \HDUV DQG RYHU Ă€YH PLOOLRQ GROODUV DQG WKH UHVXOWV DUH stunning! The restoration also provided lots of jobs for the sleepy town of Osprey. To date, 88 rooms have been handsomely refurbished, with 50 more to go. Renamed Bentley’s Boutique Hotel, this four-star resort is now sleek, sophisticated and trendy, with restaurants, an Underground Club, and a Tiki Bar and Grille. It is located at 1660 S. Before locating in the U.S., the Mike & Sheila Lewis Posners owned a 130 seat restaurant in the West End Owners of Siesta Sports Rentals for nine years. It was just off Piccadilly in Mayfair, and they had to deal with a staff of thirty employees. It was a lot of work! “We had no intention of going back into the restaurant business,â€? says Richard Posner. “But a bakery? That’s different.â€? They Rod Thomas, Kim Owens, & Paul and Carolyn Martin ship all over the world. Mark Toomey of Robin Hood Rentals in owners of Bentley’s Boutique Hotel Siesta Village has an interesting tale to tell. “I’m from Nottingham, England. |Village Gourmet, on the south end of Siesta Village, serves bagels and more for breakfast and lunch... Add Village Gourmet to your list of Siesta Key beach supplies. The restaurant on the south end of Siesta Village offers inside and deck dining as well as take-out for those in a rush to get to the sand. For those on a real rush to the beach, call ahead (941-349-7651) and get a beach-lunchbag-to-go with choice of sandwich and sides. Village Gourmet also offers Bronx, N.Y., bagels shipped from the Big Apple. Bagel DÀFLRQDGRV FODLP WKH\ DUH DV JRRG DV DQ\ IRXQG in New York. Add a schmear of cream cheese ($2.95) and hit the beach. Better yet, pick up a baker’s dozen ($15) and enjoy all week. The relatively new eatery has expanded its menu with more breakfast and luncheon offerings. A quick stop can result in a good breakfast of a sandwich on bagel, roll, or croissant ($4.95 to $3.50) with egg(s), cheese, choice of meat or the B.E.L.T. Pkwy., with bacon, egg, lettuce, and tomato with a mayo schmear.

Then there is the Broadway, a club sandwich in a whole-wheat wrap with roast turkey, cheddar cheese, bacon, tomato, and mayo at $8. A bump up from the Broadway is the towering Trump Tower ($8), a triple-decker sandwich on choice of toasted bread encompassing turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. All sandwiches come with New York delistyle potato salad or chips and a pickle. Be sure to get the potato salad — it’s wonderful and in no way reminiscent of any Southern-style salad Floridians are used to munching upon. Village Gourmet’s new menu offers grill items like the Bronx Bomber ($8.95), a halfpound of Angus burger topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a “burger jam” on a brioche bun.

Village ll Gourmet owners Fran and d Mara Daidone also offer breakfast omelets, frittatas, sausage gravy and biscuits and the “Uncle Benny” with pretty much all of the above: two fried eggs with ham on tip of buttermilk biscuits, sausage gravy, and cheddar cheese, served with a choice of a side dish for $7.95. Sides include the popular sweet potato or roasted corn, hash, grits, sliced tomato, fresh fruit, or toast. Another breakfast hot-griddle offering is Banana’s Foster French Toast ($8.50) with traditional toast topped with fresh bananas and a special pecan-caramel sauce. Moving on to luncheon specialties is Ricky Ricardo ($8.25). The Miami-style Cuban sandwich — no salami, as opposed to the Tampa version with salami and occasionally mayonnaise — is packed with shredded pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickle, and lettuce on a pressed bun. Another hot-lunch sandwich item at Village Gourmet is the Big Apple Turkey ($8) with roasted turkey, sliced apple, cucumber, tomato, and sprouts, served on a multi-grain bread with raspberry aioli.

Village Gourmet, on the south end of Siesta Village, serves bagels and more for breakfast and lunch.

Hungry for a dog? Go for the Road Side Hot Dog ($6.95), a quarter-pound Sabret-grilled hot dog with red onions, sauerkraut, and mustard. There is also the Coney Island, a quarter-pound dog with chili, diced onion, and cheddar cheese for $7.50. All the grill sandwiches are served with roasted ‘tater tots or chips and a pickle. Village Gourmet caters to the Vegan patrons with the Soho Special Panini ($8), with grilled eggplant, zucchini, and pesto, served on a pressed Panini roll. Village Gourmet (5263 Ocean Blvd., Siesta Key, 941-349-7651, siestavillagegourmet.com) is open daily from 7:30 a.m. until late afternoon. Catering is available for larger gatherings, and free delivery on orders more than $20 is available on Siesta Key, plus a discount for island employees. Village Gourmet seems like a prime pre- and post-beach stop on Siesta Key.

Why I Love Living In Sarasota

Sand ‡

|By Jacqueline Abney

Sarasota is what I would refer to as a “big, little townâ€? where the six degrees of separation rule is actually more like three degrees. With that being said, if you play your cards right and respect thy neighbor, Sarasota is a world of opportunity. Growing up here has afforded me the privilege of meeting an eclectic mix of brilliant minds and personalities, all of which come and go over the years but always seem to pop up in surprising roles as all of our stories intertwine and unfold. That is what I love about Sarasota. Everyone, whether you were raised here or MXVW PRYHG LQ KDV WKH FKDQFH WR EH D ELJ Ă€VK in a little pond. When you give everyone that spotlight, they all seem to sparkle in their own way, all the while imparting a little bit of their talents onto the next until you have a big town Ă€OOHG ZLWK VSHFWDFXODU LQGLYLGXDOV DOO DIIHFWHG by each other. When you combine talented people with a breath taking environment you get an entire world of your own without having to leave the 941 area code. As a self-proclaimed foodie, my taste buds have yet to become bored with Sarasota being home to some of the country’s most inspired chefs. Recreationally, there are

bl h h our b h warm endless possibilities through beaches, gulf waters, wildlife sanctuaries, art exhibits, farmers markets, musicians and theatre just to name a few. Every day, I wake up and ask myself, “What can I get into today? From my experience, we are an accepting people who enjoy taking life by the reins and exploring all it has to offer. Our residents have a strong sense of community and if you put your self out there in a positive light it will all come back to you full circle. There is always something new to explore and adventures to be had. Keep a smile on your face and pay it forward because you never know how closely tied that fellow Sarasotan is to you and what you are capable of.

SKA’s June meeting guest speaker, Jennifer Stafford with FDOT, offered updates on the North Bridge rehabilitation which entails renovation of the tender house, and work on the steel deck grates, concrete, and mechanical parts. Jennifer shared that the new grading has a tendency to be quieter due the coating and material used. The project started June 5th with both bridge lanes remaining open. From June 11th until mid-October, a single lane will be closed nightly from 9pm to 7am. She added that there will be no evening lane closures around the July 4th holiday. Key out of an AAA travel book, and phoned ahead to find a place to stay. He reached a man named Bob at Captiva Beach Resort near Crescent Beach, a place which is no longer in business. Bob told Dave: “If you’re lookin’ for a party, you gotta go to the other coast. If you want peace and quiet and a beautiful beach, Siesta is it—very family oriented. Good enough, thought Dave, and down he came. While here on holiday, he looked up a broker, Dudley Carson at ReMax in the Village, and asked: “Do you have anything in Restaurants on Siesta Key? Dudley said that he had two sandwich shops that were privately listed. Perfect, thought Dave. Sandwich shops are open from 10:30 to 4:00, very civilized hours in the restaurant world. It took a year and a half to work out the details. At the end of that journey, Dave found himself living in the place he wanted to be, and operating the kind of business that gave him time to enjoy the quality of life. Dave had known Denise from his Indiana days. They had both been involved in the very same business. Of Denise, he cheerfully says: “She is the best restaurant operator I have ever met, except for myself, of course. Dave decided to see if Denise would like to join in on the Anna’s Deli project. “I am going to take the chance, he told her. “Do you want to get involved in this too? She did, and they began working together. They also started getting personally involved, and in 2002 they were married on Siesta Beach. All three of Dave’s kids are in the restaurant business, so it wasn’t hard for Dave to convince his daughter and one of his two sons to move down. In 2003, son Dave opened Anna’s Downtown, located at 128 North Orange Ave., in the heart of our beautiful city. After managing Anna’s Siesta for several years, daughter Ashley took over the operation of Anna’s Downtown in 2006 when her brother moved on to other things. In keeping with the

concept of civilized hours, Anna’s Downtown operates from 10:30 to 3:00 every day except Sunday. Son, Eric, remained in Indiana, a location he loves, although of course he comes often to visit. Eric bought a restaurant in Bloomington called Opie Taylor’s. It is a sports-related fullservice restaurant serving Indiana University. In 2012, Dave and Denise Havill opened Anna’s University. This newest branch is located at 8207 Tourist Center Dr. in University Park, and is open from 10:30 am to 8 pm seven days a week. Keep Your Dog Safe in the Water This Summer By Dr. Marty Becker | Source: Vetstreet.com Many dogs love a trip to the lake, river or ocean, and many others love to go boating. But preventing accidents that could injure your dog? That’s up to you. Even dogs who swim well can drown, just as people who are good swimmers sometimes do. People and dogs both often overestimate their skills, and they frequently don’t give enough respect to the water and the weather. You may think your dog swims better than you do, but you’d better believe that his life is in your hands regardless. You need to think ahead before you go boating or swimming to help prevent catastrophes, and you need to keep thinking about how to protect him as conditions change. Assess Your Dog’s Risk If you have a Bulldog or similar barrelchested breed, think long and hard before taking him swimming or boating. Not only are these dogs prone to rapid overheating, they’re also not designed for swimming. In fact, bulldogs and other short-nosed, topKHDY\ EUHHGV ÀQG LW GLIÀFXOW WR VWD\ Dà RDW and disaster doesn’t take long to develop for these dogs. If your dog isn’t made for water, you’re probably better leaving him home for his own safety. If you decide to take your dog along anyway, keep him in a life preserver and in the shade. Remember, too, that even dogs who once

swam like dolphins can be at risk in the water as they age. For these dogs, too, it’s important WR EULQJ WKHP EDFN WR VKRUH DW WKH ÀUVW VLJQ WKDW WKHLU HQHUJ\ LV à DJJLQJ And of course, the most important rule of all: Never leave your dog unsupervised in the water. Get the Right Gear for Your Water Dog All dogs need to travel with fresh water, and something to put it in. While this is very important at the ocean (to keep dogs from drinking salt water), it’s even important when at a lake or river, which may be contaminated with bacteria, protozoa or blue-green algae that can make your dog ill. Also bring a towel; you can use it to dry your dog off, of course, but you can also soak it in cool water and apply it to your pet’s groin and other areas if he overheats. Thin-coated or dogs with short white fur need sunblock on exposed skin, such as the nose and ears, and lightweight clothing to protect the rest of their body from sunburn — or better yet, keep them in the shade of a EHDFK XPEUHOOD :KLOH \RX FDQ ÀQG SURGXFWV made just for dogs, you can also make do with a waterproof children’s sunblock — just keep your dog from licking it off until it has time to soak in. Even dogs with lots of protective fur can end up with a sunburn if they have lightcolored noses, by the way. Don’t laugh it off:

Sun exposure iis a surprisingly i i l common cancer trigger in dogs. For boating, your dog should wear a life preserver just like everyone else on board does. Look for one with a handle, so you can easily get your pet back in the boat if he goes over the side. Life vests are also a good idea for dogs who don’t swim well, puppies and older dogs. Finally, choose a ramp for your boat or dock that your dog can use too, and teach her how to use it. Be Aware of Changing Conditions Before you let your dog in the water, take a look around and heed any warning signs. Riptides are dangerous for dogs as well as

people, hungry sharks l and dh h k won’t ’t avoid id ttaking ki a bite of your dog given the opportunity. If conditions aren’t safe for people, they’re not safe for dogs. In rivers, be aware of currents, and in all bodies of water, look out for underwater debris. In the mountains, the beach can be hot — but the water can be very, very cold. Beware! While no one wants a good day to end, don’t ever take a chance on the day turning tragic. If water conditions aren’t safe or if the weather turns ugly, grab your dog and head for home. The same is true if your dog seems tired or hot. I’d rather see you and your dog live to play another day.

Pet Friendly Beach

|Brohard Paw Beach, 1600 Harbor Dr., Venice, FL 34285 Paw Park is one of the few places along the beach where dogs are allowed. The park features an enclosed run for big dogs and one for small dogs, as well as an open beach area where dogs can swim. Just say no to which drugs? By Dr. Jennifer J. Norbits Without question children, teenagers, even adult politicians should not smoke marijuana or do cocaine. Olympic and professional athletes should not build their bodies up with steroids. Young people should not prepare for exams by taking uppers to stay awake and downers to fall asleep. However, the fact is we should all be saying no to all sorts of drugs. We have become the most drugged culture in the world. Over half the drugs taken on the planet are taken right here in the U.S. How can we expect young people to say no to drugs while the rest of us keep saying yes? From birth until death we are on medication. If we want to have a child, we take a drug. If we want to prevent conception, we take a drug. If we do have a child and there is pain during labor, there is a drug. When the child goes to school, if he does not pay attention or conform to policy, there is a drug. Today, millions of children in the U.S. take stimulant medication for hyperactivity and inattentiveness. What would happen if Edison, Einstein, or Beethoven, who were known for being poor students, had been on Ritalin? Their great minds would have been destroyed at a young age and we never would have gotten to experience the product of their genius. Adult children who used Ritalin have thought patterns that are like Swiss cheese: they are full of holes! If your child is female, we can give a drug for menstrual cramps. If your son or daughter is depressed, there is Prozac for that. If he or she has any ache or pain, then there is a drug for that. High blood pressure? High Cholesterol? Diet and exercise may bring them down but why bother when you can take a drug.

Before you ingest the next pill in your medicine cabinet, take a look at your child who is standing there watching you. You’re a little scared. Looking at the temperature these days is not for the faint of heart. Considered one of Venice’s best-kept secrets, the Venice Area Audubon Society’s Rookery, or VAAS Rookery, is a very small island in the middle of an equally small lake. It is a classic example of the symbiotic relationship between alligators and birds. Alligators in the lake protect the nesting area from snakes, raccoons, bobcats, and rats that might otherwise take eggs and chicks from the nests. A handful RI à HGJOLQJV DUH ORVW HYHU\ \HDU EHFDXVH they fall from the nest or are snatched from lower branches by the alligators, but these losses pale in comparison with the damage a single raccoon can do in one night to a rookery as dense as this one can be. The rookery tends to be the most crowded from January through March, though different birds continue to nest on the island throughout the rest of the year. Since the various species that use the rookery tend to nest and hatch at different times of the year, there is something g going on here every month of thee year. The list of birds observed on n the island include great blue herons, snowy and great egrets, anhingas, ibis, green herons, and cattle egrets. There is a large covered pavilion adjacent to the pond. Because the distance between the shoreline and the island is less than 100 feet, the VAAS Rookery

has become an extremely popular place to photograph immature chicks, feeding parents, and mating couples. A good telephoto lens will bring the nest so close that you can actually see the colors of the eggs being laid or catch a parent feeding hungry chicks in the afternoon light. The best viewing is down the path and to the left of the pavilion. Be sure to look up into the surrounding slash pines and live oaks IRU à HGJOLQJV QHUYRXV SDUHQWV RU DYLDQ predators waiting for an opportunity to turn an unattended chick into dinner. |Sales in Sarasota market continue hot pace in May...

Source: Sarasota Association of Realtors The May 2012 numbers are in, and property sales in the Sarasota market once again topped 800 for the third consecutive month. The 854 closed transactions was the second highest total since September 2005, demonstrating once again a market that has recovered to levels not seen since the 2003-2005 real estate surge in Sarasota. The breakdown was 591 single family homes and 263 condominiums. Sales were 7.2 percent higher than in May 2011, when there were 796 closed transactions. It was the fourth straight month that topped 1,000, a major indicator of the future direction of the market. Last year’s spring surge didn’t slow down until July, and the numbers seem to indicate there remains strength in the current market dynamics. “I’ve spoken to many agents who are having a tremendous 2012,â€? said SAR President Laura Benson. “This is certainly the right time to be in the real estate industry in Sarasota. Interest rates hit record lows in May, prices remain relatively low compared to the record surge from 2003 to 2005, and all the wonderful attributes of Sarasota are attracting buyers from across the nation, and the world.â€? Single family home prices remained at a level 34 percent higher than the low of the market reached 14 months ago ($137,500), while condo prices are over 40 percent higher than the low point ($127,000). The reason for the price resurgence remains likely related to the lower number of distressed property sales. The total number of distressed sales, foreclosures and short sales, remained around 31 percent, the lowest level in three years. The available inventory of homes on the market dropped to a new decade low of 3,917, dropping 8.5 percent from the April Ă€JXUH RI +LJK VDOHV DQG ORZ LQYHQWRU\ KDV DOVR GURSSHG WKH PRQWKV RI LQYHQWRU\ WR QHZ \HDU ORZV 7KH 0D\ Ă€JXUHV are 4.3 months of inventory for single family homes and 5.2 months inventory for condos. This scenario tends to escalate prices, so if you’re in the market for a home, now is the time to act.â€?

|Sea turtle season is here on Siesta beaches: off with the lights! By Paul Roat Florida has snowbird, stone crab, mullet, tarpon, stingray, and myriad other seasons. Beachgoers currently are enjoying a joyful sea turtle nesting season. Sea turtles call Florida’s beaches a brief home from May to late October. Females come to shore at the dead of night on the same stretch of beach upon which they were born to burrow a hole in the sand. The hole is home for her nest of 100 or so eggs. She covers the nest, returns to the Gulf of Mexico, and three months or so later the hatchlings claw their way out of the sand to scamper to the water. |Rated 2011’s #1 Beach In America by Dr. Beach... Siesta Public Beach, located inside Crescent Beach, is renowned for its truly breathtaking sunsets, easygoing waves, and gorgeous crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the touch. Among the many awards it has earned are the “Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World (The Great International White Sand challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America (The Travel Channel, 2004) and for 2011, it was rated #1 beach in the 21st annual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research. Walking along, or swimming and playing in the Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance to many of the village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach actually begins between beach access #2 & #3 and extends to beach access #13 with the southern part relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private privateâ€? beach. Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family playâ€? beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch, and Ă€VKLQJ LV SHUPLWWHG LQ WKH DGMDFHQW %OLQG 3DVV /DJRRQ There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. |Siesta Key Drum Circle... Siesta Beach has become the home to what is considered one of the largest drum circles in the nation. This is not a commercial event but local phenomenon that began spontaneously and now has a life of its own. If you’re visiting the area, or live nearby be sure to check this one out. There are loads of drummers and belly dancers plus lots of families, beach going onlookers, & curious tourists, especially during the winter tourist season when the crowds can swell into the thousands. Bring a blanket or chair, most everyone does. It happens every Sunday starting a couple of hours before sunset, and ends around 10 PM. This gathering meets up just south of the main pavilion between lifeguard stands 3 and 4 on Siesta Public Beach. Just follow your ears. This is true community - free-form drumming, open to the public and entirely improvised in-the-moment. Instruments center around drums and percussion, but may LQFOXGH RWKHU LQVWUXPHQWV VXFK DV Ă XWHV GLGJHULGRRV DQG other non-percussion instruments. |Slather up: Skin tips as sun season arrives. By Paul Roat Oh, how we remember the day. And oh, how we’re living to regret those days. Years ago we used to go to the beach, slather ourselves with mineral oil to promote tanning, and lay on our towels for hours and hours to bake like the little basted turkeys that we were in the sun.
