Landings residents John McFetridge, Norm Olshansky, and Guillermo Vidal were among the list of speakers who helped launch the 2024 Landings Free College curriculum. All sessions were extremely well attended and the content was very informative.

John addressed the current and controversial topic of Artificial

Intelligence, and how it impacts all aspects of our lives. Norm presented “News of the Week in Israel” and highlighted the myths and facts of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. On a lighter note, Guillermo spoke about the much less controversial, but equally relevant topic of senior dating.

This is the seventeenth in a series of articles highlighting the special volunteers who help make The Landings such a wonderful community.

Psychiatric nurse, pilot, boater, master gardner, entrepreneur, realtor, artist, columnist, ham radio operator and Landings volunteer are all adjectives that describe Betty Greenspan.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Betty is the oldest of three children who grew up in a family of furriers.

Living a modest life, people thought she was rich because she wore a Persian Lamb fur coat to school.

The family moved to Valley Stream, NY in the 50’s where Betty indicated that she had favorite memories of large family get togethers in their home. As many as 25 family members (aunts, uncles and cousins) gathered together on a regular basis.

At Valley Stream South High School, Betty excelled in science and was a member of the Opera Club. She married when she was 18 years old and soon afterwards had her first child, Scott, in 1961. She lived near Queens College and took nursing courses part-time while her student friends baby sat. She had her second child, Peter, in 1966. Betty divorced shortly after receiving her RN degree and pursued a career in psychiatric nursing. It was a significant time in her life.

Betty was employed at Long Island Jewish Hospital, handling psychiatric admissions, evaluating medications, and providing counseling. She moved on to her favorite area, working with adolescence.

Betty’s hobby was horticulture which led her to take courses at the Bronx Botanical Gardens.

This would bode well for her later in life. She met Richard Greenspan, a young dentist, on a blind date. She said it was electrifying when they first met and was truly “love at first sight”. He was practicing dentistry in Danbury, CT and after dating for 7 months, Betty moved to CT to be near Richard. They

married in 1974 while she continued to work as a psychiatric nurse at both Fairfield Hills State Hospital and at the Danbury Hospitals Crisis Intervention Unit. During that time, she had 2 more children, Allison and Shaun.

Richard’s hobby was flying and Betty thought that she would like her license as well. They bought a single engine plane, a Grumman American Cheetah.

Betty took flying lessons until she was 9-months pregnant then stopped when Allison was born. She went on to do her last solo cross country and obtain her license. Some of their flying adventures would include putting their bicycles in the plane, then fly to Nantucket and ride around the island as well as other places on the cape. Occasionally they would fly to Washington, DC and Maryland to visit friends. One time they flew to visit friends with a box of lobsters that were trying to escape their enclosure. It was a very exciting flight!

Betty belonged to the 99’s Women Pilot Organization founded by Amelia Earhart. They eventually sold the plane and bought a sailboat which started them on many new adventures on Candlewood Lake in Brookfield.

In 1991, they moved to Sarasota. Richard continued his dentistry and Betty took advantage of her interest in horticulture and eventually opened a flower shop on Osprey Ave. The store “A Little Shop of Flowers” was very successful. She also sold arrangements at the Farmers Market.

When the lease expired, she moved the business to Towles Court. Someone from abroad offered to buy the business and Betty thought it was time to return to nursing and got a job a Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Betty and Richard have lived all over Sarasota. They first moved to the Treehouses in 1991, then moved to Osprey where they furthered their boating interests in Southbay, then moved downtown with the boat, then again to Longboat Key. While on Longboat, they were having a 44-foot

and then died. They became financial victims, like many others. They had to regroup and change their lives. Their story caught the attention of the Wall Street Journal and they appeared on “Good Morning America”. They moved back to The Landings and lived on Pintail Way, then another Treehouse and finally Heron Way where they “vow to never leave”. Richard retired in 2018 and Betty in 2019. Now that she had more time, Betty’s cousin, Paige Packman, encouraged her to join the LMA Social Committee. Betty also initiated getting the LRC name tags. Betty is currently on the Eagle Committee and is the author of the regular feature, “Day Tripping”. She is also the instructor for the Landings Mahjong class. In the general community, Betty belongs to Women Contemporary Artists and was

the City Director for Tel Mond, Israel, for Sarasota Sister Cities.

Together Richard and Betty are trying to form CERT, a Community Emergency Response Team here in The Landings since they are both ham radio operators. It is through FEMA and very important in case of emergencies. Stay tuned for more info.

Betty’s family are meditators and they have been practicing for over 50 years. She likes the peacefulness and Zen feeling of The Landings, the sense of community and camaraderie as well as the great location. When asked what she would want moving forward in The Landings, she talked about a more consistent process at the guardhouse, improved nature trail and the need for benches and maybe a gazebo in Bayles Park.

You can be sure that Betty will be working on adding more adjectives to her name in the coming years.

President’s Report

Dear Neighbors,

I am honored to serve as your President for another board year. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with a capable and committed board of directors who share the same vision of preserving and enhancing our community.

Each director has an area of responsibility and will report on their goals and achievements throughout the year. Judy Greene is our Vice President. In addition to leading the board in my absence, she is Chair of both Security and Maintenance. Louis Goncalves is Vice Chair of Security and is an experienced member of the Finance Committee. Hans Hawrysz is our new Treasurer. His deep experience in the financial sector makes him uniquely qualified for this role.

Former board President Elida Ramberger is Chair of the roads project and is working tirelessly as we bring the roads project to a successful conclusion. In addition, she has agreed to join the Executive Committee as Secretary. Eddie Goldstein heads the Digital Communication Committee. She oversees all things in the digital space at The Landings. You have no doubt noticed the changes to our web site, what you may not know is that she is a key player in the modernization of our security structure. Eddie is also behind the “one data” base initiative.

John Schmidt heads the Governance Committee and will take on the major task of updating our bylaws. He is also spearheading the audio and video modernization of the Lakeview Room to enable the LMA Board to hold our board meetings on site. I should mention that he works with LRC Board member Bob Golicher

as we implement this joint project. Bob Golicher is also the LRC liaison with the Lakes and Drainage as we work on mangrove restoration. Sue Camins is Chair of the Nomination Committee, an experienced member of the Governance Committee and has agreed to help me with “special projects.” I appreciate Sue’s willingness to help ease my workload. Jackie Massari has guided our successful kayak program and has revitalized our Social Committee. She is now dealing with the fact that between LRC and LMA we have so many events that we must be careful to avoid bumping into each other. A good problem to have! Jackie will coordinate with Paige Packman, Director, and Social Chair at LRC

The major initiatives now underway include:

- Roads Project: we crossed the 50% mark two weeks ago. Gator is expected to complete all paving by the first week in March, the project is expected to conclude by March 31 st . A project of this size will require areas of remediation toward the end of the project.

The areas to be remediated are limited and consistent with what can be expected with a project of this size. The remediation process has been communicated to residents, the “punch list” is on the web site (in the roads section) and you are encouraged to report any areas of concern to the roads committee. We expect to complete the project using funds now held in the road reserves. (We are optimistic that we will not need to use the 2023 surplus/equity which now totals $375,000).

- Security modernization: The security/digital task force, led by Judy Greene and Eddie Goldstein,

is closing in on vendor selection. A second-quarter implementation of the new structure is expected, and funds are available for necessary expenses.

- Mangrove protection task force: Our in-house consultant, Alice Howard, has completed her assignment with the submission of our grant proposals. Alice has now helped us with The Landings Resident Survey, The Five-Year Plan as well as the implementation of the task force. We are very grateful for these important contributions to the betterment of The Landings. The Mangrove protection task force will now become a permanent subcommittee of Lakes and Drainage. Doug Booth will manage it. Thank you, Doug, for stepping up. The last point I will make is that progress is never easy, especially with the many initiatives underway. It requires countless volunteer hours as well as your patience and understanding as we experience change and inconvenience.

LRC Social Look Ahead

Okay folks, time to pull out your calendars to make note of upcoming events. We are so lucky to have a full slate of events to choose from!

In addition to the usual activities like card games, Trivia, Koffee Klatches, and racquet sport socials, we also have an interesting variety of speakers at the Tuesday 2 pm Free College series.

The Rock & Roll Pool party returns on Friday March 8 th , followed by a St. Patrick’s Day Round Robin & LRC dinner on Friday, March 15 th , organized by Tennis Committee. Ellen Demos

volunteered to organize our first ever Kentucky Derby party on Saturday May 4 th !

Offsite activities abound, with a Wine Tasting event at Total Wines on April 1 st , weekly Kayak Outings Thursday mornings at 10 am, led by Wayne Trotter and John McFetridge, a Landings Bike Outing to Casey Key on Sunday March 3 rd , and Lido Key Mangrove Tunnel Outing on Friday, April 12 th . It’s exhausting trying to keep up with all the fun!

Rousing Fun at the Superbowl Party!

Was it the revenge factor from the 2022 Super Bowl or the “Taylor Swift” phenomenon? Whatever the reason, 153 million people across America tuned in to watch Superbowl LVIII last month. Forty LRC members were able to enjoy the big event on the 130-inch TV in Lakeside Room. We were pleased to meet several recent Landings residents, including some wise folks who cut the cable cord!

Judging by the cheers and boos, many were rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs, but even more seemed to cheer on the San Francisco 49ers.

“I think we were just more vocal,” said 49ers fan Gayle Maraval, who organized the party with her husband, Philippe, on behalf of the LRC Social Committee. This was one of the longest games and second overtime game in Superbowl history. Contrary to past Super Bowl parties, this year fans stayed long past Usher’s half-

time show, until the game ended in nail biting overtime with just three seconds to go!

The BYOB event is popular for its friendly rivalry but also the abundance of savory nibbles. “I think this is such a fun party partly because people bring great food. It’s a real spread,” said Gayle. She noted some attendees added to the festivities by coming decked out in their teams’ gear, and others showed up early to claim the front row seats. The exciting night was a fitting finale to the 23-24 football season!

SECOND VISIT

This was our second visit, this time with family from Minneapolis near Christmas. WHAT a perfect delicious dinner on all levels! My daughter's family, very discerning food critics, said the Dungeness crab was equal to the best they had in Latin America. They inhaled their supper with gusto!

We love the more natural low key atmosphere and the close proximity of the staff to the dining area. This helps them too in observing guest experience, valuable feedback.

The fresh fish selection of approximately 8-10 varieties is impressive and well represented with truly delicious options. We had their fresh steamed clams in butter — small super fresh and so sweet. Even saved the broth to make homemade Italian clam marinara later!

And their crab cake was amazing.

The "maraschino cherry" of our perfect dinner was their EXCELLENT key lime pie, home made by them, served with genuine whipped cream. Enjoy!!!

Today’s racquets and strings have made the game more favorable for the players that have an aggressive game style.

It rewards the risk players because the racquets have a bigger sweet spot to give you more power and control. The strings also make it much easier to create spin on the ball to help you keep the ball in play and make less errors.

These aggressive players who follow regimented diets, fitness and strength programs are incredible at hitting the ball aggressively repeatedly.

These players also have a common mindset that help them take risks to play brave and courageous tennis.

The common characteristics that I see puts them in what I call the “A Club”.

The first “A” is Act. These players act confidently and positively throughout the match no matter what the score is. They have a poker face to not give any hope to their opponents that want to see some kind of weakness.

The second “A” is Attitude. These player’s attitude is that they love to compete and will never quit until the match is over.

The third “A” is Alert. These players are focused in the present and want the ball.

When the ball comes to them their eyes are stalking the ball to help them hit the sweet spot on their racquet.

We had many enjoyable activities in the past month. We had our first Burns Supper, celebrating the birthday of poet Robert Burns, complete with haggis, scotch, and bagpipes. The party was a huge success.

The Landings Free College continued with exciting lectures on Senior Dating, The Gut Microbiome,

Israel, Living with Alligators, and the Sarasota Ballet. Line Dancing, Core Mobility, and Mahjong lessons were recent offerings to residents who may not play tennis.

I hope you can try some of the new activities that the Club offers. It is a great way to meet new people and learn some new skills.

The fifth “A” is Active. These players are moving their feet,

following the ball correctly to create pressure on their opponents and take the pressure off their teammates in doubles. They have good posture and balance when they try to execute their shots.

The sixth “A” is for Aggressive. These players are not afraid to “go for it” because they know where to aim and they are playing to win. They understand that they are hitting the correct shot and are not afraid to lose the point.

The seventh “A” is Accurate. These players practice aiming at big targets and therefore understand the importance of watching the ball and timing the

ball correctly.

The eight “A” is Awesome. These players have very good technique and a crystal-clear game plan. They are enjoying and having fun playing tennis. Additionally, they are fun to watch for the spectators and their teammates.

To take your game to the next level add more of these “A Club” qualities.

A Scottish Celebration: Robert Burns Night

A celebration of the life and legacy of the world-renowned Scottish poet, Robert Burns, was held at The Landings Racquet Club on January 25th, which is the birthday of the Bard. Robert Burns, a source of inspiration to the founders of liberalism and socialism, was known for his astute social commentary and focus on all things political. Burns penned more than 55 verses and songs before he died in 1796, when he was only 37 years old.

The main attraction of Burns Night is the Burns Supper. Traditionally it involves the guests wearing tartan, listening to the bagpipes, observing the parade of the Haggis, and reciting the prolific writer’s songs and poems. Burns night is celebrated by millions of Scots and friends, all around the world.

The vision of the organizers for the event, Anne Parsons, Anna-Maria Campbell, Colin Campbell, Doug Arcos, and Nancy Holmes, was to provide an experience of the traditions involved on this special night, and have another grand reason to eat, drink, dance, sing, and have a jolly good time. And oh, what a night it was!

Guests were met at The Landings Racquet Club to the sound of’ the bagpipes, played by

Jamie Everett in full Highland dress. Upon entry they had a choice of two cocktails: The Flying Scot or The Highland Fling.

Before the festivities began, Kate Reid (Chief Philanthropy Officer) and Kimberly Treharne (Chief Program Officer) from The Florida Center for Early Childhood explained the mission of this wonderful organization. All proceeds from the raffle and the silent auction were donated to this exceptional group.

Everyone stood as the procession for The Haggis arrived with Brian Campbell bearing it on a silver tray. Colin Campbell then recited the Burns’ poem, “Address to the Haggis.”

After which, everyone lifted their wee dram o’ the Dalmore—a single malt, 12-year-old Scotch matured in white oak casks.

Ms. Joan Campbell, accompanied by Ms. Barbara Rothman on piano, sang “Ae Fond Kiss,” prior to the three-course meal being served. On each table, when excellent bottles of white and red wine were emptied, new bottles replaced them. Between courses, Joan sang, “My Love is Like a Red, Red, Rose,” and “O Flower of Scotland.”

After the meal, Colin Campbell performed the Immortal Memory (the main tribute

speech to Burns), Johnny Sellyn recited “Toast to the Lassies” followed by Anne Parsons’ “Reply to the Toast to the Lassies.” It wasn’t long before the lassies were up on the floor dancing to a medley of Scottish tunes.

Throughout the evening, Doug Arcos captured images of the event, and our M.C., Anna-Maria Rippa Campbell, captivated the room with her wry humor, her charismatic personality, and her ability to improvise. For her performance this young woman deserves an Emmy.

The evening ended with everyone standing, holding hands, and singing, “Auld Lang Syne.” Och aye, we brought a wee bit o’ Scotland to the Landings.

Not many people are lucky enough to discover and pursue their passion early in life, let alone throughout multiple stages in their careers. Landings resident, Joan Lowery, is one of the few that have broken this barrier as she continues to hone her passions for the arts, teaching, and social justice in many forms.

Growing up in the Bronx, Joan developed interests in dance, theater, and social justice at a young age. Her love for the arts began when she danced on NBC TV’s Children’s Hour from ages 3-8. Joan’s passion for justice began in a less positive way. She had many Polish neighbors who survived the Holocaust, and their stories deeply affected her. So, at a young age she decided that she would do what she could to make the world a more peaceful and inclusive place.

Torn between which passion to pursue in college, Joan originally decided to go down the arts track and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology. After her first year, she joined Volunteers in Service to America, spending the summer working on a Chippewa Reservation in Minnesota. This experience led her to realize she wanted more than a career in fashion. Her commitment to social change deepened after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Before transferring to the University of Wisconsin (UW), she spent the next summer volunteering in a black community in rural Alabama.

At UW, Joan studied theater with an emphasis on Asian philosophy and practices such as Tai Chi. Her continuing interest in social change led to performing in alternative theater venues around Madison, including a stint doing guerrilla theater to protest the Vietnam War.

and Storer Cable. Her journalism training was all on the job. When she felt ready, she moved to San Francisco where she worked as a freelance feature reporter for local television stations, as well as CNN, the Discovery Channel and Associated Press Radio.

Joan ultimately returned to her training roots, specializing in media training and communication skills. She consulted to Intel Corporation and numerous other companies. For many years, Intel sent her around the world teaching their professionals to be more effective communicators.

Joan said, “Every quarter Intel would send us to different parts of the world. It was like winning the lottery as I love to travel and immerse myself in different cultures.”

Today, Joan considers herself “semi-retired.” She continues to work with Intel and select clients such as Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s Invest in Incredible team where she teaches media training and communication skills. She also teaches empathy skills to healthcare professionals for a Boston-based company.

Joan has lived in The Landings for 26 years. She still pursues her passion for volunteering with Embracing Our Differences, Impact Theater, and Resilient Retreat. Recently, she was certified to teach therapeutic Qigong to trauma survivors.

In her free time, Joan enjoys hanging out with friends and being a “mother” to her Tibetan Spaniel, Lotus. She loves living in this community and plans to contribute by interviewing residents for The Landings Eagle. An avid listener, she wants to learn and write about others’ life journeys.

A lifelong arts enthusiast, social justice advocate, and respected teacher, Joan’s go-getter attitude

has enabled her to pursue her passions. She feels fortunate for her extensive career, worldly travels, experiences, and getting to share her knowledge with those around her. She now travels for fun, and recently visited the Amazon, the Galapagos, and Iceland. When reflecting on her positive experiences, Joan stated, “It’s been like winning the lottery over and over again.”

Upon graduation, Joan spent a year performing with fringe theater groups in London before attending drama school. After returning to the U.S., she joined Theater Workshop Boston, a company that developed original plays, and taught and performed in Boston-area schools. They used theater techniques to teach academics and facilitate cross cultural appreciation among students.

Joan’s teaching experiences ignited her passion for education. She attended graduate school to study instructional design and hone her knowledge and training skills. She worked in both the non-profit and corporate sectors before moving to Sarasota in the early ‘80s.

Lichens: Living Together for 500 million Years and Going Strong

Lichens, the patchy green growths on tree trunks that thrive in the background of The Landing landscape and our consciousness, are very unusual and some say bizarre organisms. Th ey represent a vastly different model for how a life form can survive and thrive. Lichen’s life model is not based on being an individual organism but a relationship between two different life forms or symbiosis. In 1879, scientist Heinrich Anton de Bary defined Symbiosis as “the living together of unlike organisms”. Lichens are a partnership between a fungus and an algae. Other species follow this model – most trees depend on fungi in their roots to convert chemicals to usable sugars. Clownfish live with an anemone’s poison to the benefi t of both. Lichens are one of the most successful practitioners of the symbiosis model. Beyond their historical success, global range, diversity of shapes and colors, their ability to withstand extreme conditions is a constant source of interest for scientists.

What is a Lichen?

Lichens are an ancient species built to survive in many incredibly challenging environments. They are low energy and can turn on/off their metabolism for lengthy periods to deal with difficult periods.

In the Lichen partnership, the fungus is the dominant partner and responsible for the basic structure. It creates exposure to the sun, protects from radiation and adheres the structure to a highly specialized surface. In the structure lives the algae that converts sunlight into the energy that sustains both the algae and fungus and their associated bacteria helpers. The fungus also provides the algae with water and chemicals necessary for its survival.

Th e bottom layer of the lichen is specialized to adhere to the specific surface of whatever the lichen lives on. – tree bark and branches, boulders,

rocks, fences etc. Th e bottom layer does not conduct any water or food to the lichen. Unlike higher plants, lichens have no roots, stems, or leaves.

All the lichen needs is a receptive surface, light, and rain/humidity. The Lichen’s flexibility and minimal requirement’s structure provides many colonization opportunities and a unique ability to survive in harsh conditions.

The Success and Toughness of Lichens:

The symbiotic model that lichens have pioneered has proven to be extremely successful. Lichenologists believe that lichens have been around for 400+ million years since plants fi rst began to cover the earth.

Current estimates are that there are an estimated 20,000 species of lichens in the world with tremendous diversity. There are an estimated 1,000 species of lichen in Florida. They are found from the poles to the tropics, from the intertidal zones to the peaks of mountains and on every kind of surface from soil, rocks, tree bark, abandoned cars to the backs of living insects. Estimates are that lichens cover about 7% of the global land mass, especially in the tundra regions where they are the primary food for caribou and reindeer. Lichens can survive the hottest spots on earth, can be frozen to the temperature of liquid nitrogen (-196 C) and resume photosynthesis when brought back to

with its widely fluctuating temperatures and cosmic radiation. After 15 days the lichens were brought back to earth and were found to be in full health with no discernible damage from their time in orbit.

Lichens also have a high tolerance for radioactivity and can be the fi rst organisms to colonize, or the longest to survive in areas of high radioactive contamination. These capabilities have made lichens a poster child for Panspermia theories – the idea that life came to earth via meteorites or

extraterrestrial objects. And fi nally, lichens are extremely long lived. It is quite common for a lichen to have a lifespan of several centuries; in fact, some arctic specimens are estimated to be about 9,000 years old!

Lichens in the Landings: There are lichens everywhere in The Landings, but they are not easy to spot. Look for crusty splotches on the bark of the oaks, bushes, palms, walls, and mangrove branches along the nature trail. Like the Resurrection Ferns, which cover many of our oak trees, they become more visible when it rains, and they swell up to capture moisture to store.

Lichens demonstrate that living together can work to the benefit of the partners!

Kayak Outing

On February 8th, The Landings Kayaking Group was lucky enough to have the best weather day in a week. The dry conditions and light breeze made the surroundings of South Siesta Key on Robert’s Bay and the Intercoastal Waterway even more delightful. The water from the launch area was almost flat, making gliding easy for our kayaks.

We enjoyed the view of condos and elegant homes and then meandered to islands of mangroves. After some time, we found a sandy spot to moor and walked over a dune to the Gulf of Mexico side of Siesta Key. We found a serene and empty beach with calm waters,

making it another stunning place to savor.

Then, we returned to the kayaks and rowed gently along the shoreline. The area was dense with foliage and home to many birds. We saw egrets, herons, ospreys, pelicans, seagulls, and others. We had a pleasant time sharing the waterway with these birds.

Finally, we floated back to the kayak launch. It was a meditative morning, with the sound of water gently splashing around us as we paddled to the left and right. Sharing this experience with pleasant neighbors was enjoyable, leaving us relaxed and in harmony with our beautiful surroundings.

Landings Bike Outing: Casey Key

Join us on Sunday, March 3 rd for a bike outing to Casey Key followed by lunch at the home of Art Wood. Meet at the Racquet Club at 9:30 am. We will caravan to Blackburn Point and then ride to the Venice jetties and back along beautiful Casey Key Road.

Nature Day on the Bay

The LMA Social Committee is sponsoring a new community event, Nature Day on the Bay, to recognize and raise awareness of The Landings’ unique natural assets and beauty. The event will take place along and near the Nature Trail on Sunday, April 21 st , from 1-4 pm.

Plan to join us for an afternoon filled with fun and learning for all: families, children, grandchildren, and adults. Booths and activities about mangroves, oysters,

butterflies, bees, birds will be included. Additionally, there will be kayak rides offered by Kayak Committee members for interested children as well as adults. Nothing Succeeds Like Success!

Installation of additional kayak racks along the Nature Trail has been approved by the County.

Success! Dealing with county regulatory agencies is never easy and clearcut; it requires persistence, patience (and reactions like, “They want what information?”) and the help from good consultants. But we succeeded at last!

Following the approval, we ordered an additional five racks which will provide 20 more berths.

Hopefully, by the time you read this, the new racks will have been assembled by kayaking volunteers.

The kayak waitlist is long, more than 30 berth requests, so only the first 20 persons on the list have been notified of their berth acquisition.

We have established a weekly kayak outing from the Nature Trail on Thursdays at 10 am, beginning February 29 th , led by John McFetridge and Wayne Trotter.

There will be a Lido Beach outing April 12 th , with plans for a lunch afterwards.

Security Report

There were eleven incidents reported to security personnel at the main gate during the month of January.

Five of the reported incidents involved vehicles hitting an entry gate. Three different commercial vehicles hit the north gate while attempting to enter The Landings, with at least one being involved in a tailgating incident. A fourth vehicle was a Comcast van that collided with the main gate entry arm, and finally, a “visitor” hit the main gate entry arm when he decided to tailgate a resident because he “wanted to look around the neighborhood.”

All the known vehicle owners are being pursued to pay for the damages they caused.

Despite several visible signs at the north gate that warn vehicles they are approaching a resident only gate, the gate arm still seems to be a magnet for impatience and stupidity.

Three incidents were either routine or could not be further investigated:

1) A resident complained that someone from security called to inform him that his garage door was open. (It turns out that call was not from security, and his garage was closed.)

2) A resident called to inform security of a missing bike. (Nothing was found from looking at recent video footage. It turned out the bike had not been seen for the last couple of weeks.)

For those needing to borrow a kayak, please post your request on TeamReach. We are in the process of setting up a list of kayak owners who are willing to be “loaners” making it more efficient to borrow. Reminder: there is a list of berth renters on TeamReach as well as on the racks and the LMA Bulletin Board outside LRC. This should help facilitate loaning & borrowing a kayak.

Whether you are a berth renter, a wannabe kayaker, experienced or inexperienced, the Kayak Committee hopes to see you on the water. As you will note in an article written by Nancy Isseks and appearing in this issue of the Eagle, joining a kayak outing provides its own reward: beauty and camaraderie.

It has taken the Kayak Committee, an incredibly productive group of residents, many moons to finally implement and expand on an idea originated by Gary Kurnov. Innumerable individuals have provided momentum to the growth and success of LMA kayaking: Tina Greenberg, John McFetridge, Roger Blanken, Wayne Trotter, Dawn Drost, Paige Packman, Richard Goldsmith, Jayne Wallace, and Jon Demos to name but a few! What a team!

3) There was a malfunction at the north gate that was quickly fixed.

Finally, three of the incidents are more noteworthy.

1) A resident harassed a security guard for not allowing entry to the resident’s cleaning person. The resident had to be forcibly removed from the gate area. This is totally unacceptable. Guard personnel should not be subjected to harassment of any sort.

2) A resident bicyclist, riding against traffic, stated the bicycle was purposely forced off the road when a vehicle driven by another resident swerved toward him. The vehicle’s driver denied the allegation, and stated he stopped his vehicle when he saw the bicyclist, who simply fell off the road. This is a good time to remind everyone that bicycles on the roadway need to travel with traffic, and vehicular traffic needs to slow when encountering bikers or walkers on the street.

3) A resident reported the face of a peeping tom against the resident’s window. This was reported one hour after the incident, and security personnel investigated the area and saw no evidence of a culprit.

A reminder again that security personnel, or the police, need to get reports of incidents such as these as soon as possible. The sooner an investigation occurs, the more likely something can be found.

Title: 5 Myths About How Your Brain Works

This talk is a continuation of Dr.Bruno’s previous Free College talks on how the brain works in health and disease. In this talk, he will explode several common myths about brain function, including the belief that the brain is organized into in discrete functional centers; the notion that only 10% of the brain is engaged in activity at any point in time; and the belief that the brain has a very limited potential for recovery after damage. Dr. Bruno is currently the Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience at The Ohio State University. He is the former Chair of the Department of Psychology and an internationally renowned neuroscientist, editing 4 books and authoring over 225 peerreviewed papers.

Day Tripping

Flying the friendly skies?

For many Floridians, traveling is a routine part of life, and it’s just a choice of how, when, and where. Of course, Florida is unlike any other state with so many snowbirds and constant stream of visitors.

When we lived in Connecticut, I encountered individuals who seldom ventured beyond state lines! I find the contrast so striking. My own sense of wanderlust drives me to seize every opportunity to travel.

Air travel is the quickest, but not always the easiest, route out of the state. It used to be fun but has certainly lost some of its allure.

Sarasota had few choices when I moved here in 1991 and we often traveled to Tampa for affordability and direct flights.

Last year, SRQ had over 4.3 million passengers arriving to visit our beautiful city. There are now 11 carriers and the nonstop flights have increased to 12 destinations. Anyone going to the airport lately can see the incredible expansion that’s going on and experience longer lines for picking up or even dropping off passengers. The new cell phone lot is a welcome convenience and I always use it when picking up passengers.

SRQ is 8.9 miles from The Landings, besides TPA which is 68 miles away, travelers I know also use Southwest Florida International Airport, RSW, which is 86 miles away.

In total, there are 19 major airports in the Sunshine state.

Luckily, SRQ, TPA and RSW get high ratings. Punta Gorda, 51 miles away, and PIE, St Pete Clearwater, 61 miles, gets the lowest ratings in terms of cancelations and flight delays. St. Pete is served by only two airlines for scheduled passenger traffic, Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines. PGD has only Allegiant Air.

So, think about all of that!

Each of the airports have great websites, which I’ve included, that show options for parking, car rental, ground transportation and food, not to mention general carrier information. I was amazed at what was provided on these sites. Do check them out! Remember that these offer current up-to-date

information.

Now when I decide to fly somewhere it just seems that I’d rather fly out of SRQ even if it cost more money and maybe a connecting flight. I can usually get a ride to the airport and if the flight is canceled or delayed, I’m still home and it’s not quite as bad. To highlight the unpredictability of air travel, last summer we were flying to the west coast from TPA because the flights were better timed to meet with family already there. We stayed overnight at the Marriott at the airport because of an early flight, checked our bags and sat down to what we thought would be a leisurely breakfast. Not 10 minutes later, we got a text from our carrier that our flight was canceled!!!

Long story short, the second

flight was canceled as well and we had to first fly up to Newark then make another connecting flight, don’t ask!

The good news is that our bags made it to Vancouver! I would add that it’s a good idea to invest in tracking devices like Apple Air Tags. We knew where the bags were the entire time and it could have been fun if it wasn’t such a frustrating situation!

Some Interesting Facts:

SRQ opened in 1942, and afterwards, it became a fighter pilot training base during WWII. Jet service was started in 1961 and the first carriers, now long gone, were National and Eastern Airlines.

At this writing, SRQ is in the middle of building five new gates and plans for an additional

terminal, rental car facility, and parking garage.

Alarmingly, last year a total of 854 firearms were confiscated at Florida’s airports. Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, and Tampa top the list. Over 6,000 guns were confiscated in the US last year alone.

Leopard Geckos are a fantastic pet for someone who wants a small (6-8 inches), personable, and easy pet with plenty of personality. These little guys are native to grassland and rocky desert regions of Southeast Asia, so they like it warm and dry, but also appreciate a hide with some damp moss to help them with their shedding. Leopard geckos are insectivores, meaning they thrive on a diet consisting of bugs like crickets, mealworms, superworms, and even feeder roaches, if you've got the stomach for it (Yuck!). Their care is relatively simple! They require a heat source, UVB light, a dry and a humid hide, lots of bugs, and of course constant access to clean water. While they can sometimes drop their tails if they feel threatened, this is rare and they are normally very receptive and tolerant of regular gentle handling, making them a great option for kids who are learning about animals! With an average lifespan in captivity for about twenty years or more, these exciting little lizards make a great companion for kids who want a little buddy to learn from and grow up with!

Typical appearance and behavior

• Leopard Geckos come in many different "morphs," so if you don't love the coloration or pattern of how they are naturally, chances are, there's a leopard gecko out there that suits your visual preferences.

• Leopard geckos, unlike most other gecko species, have eyelids! Most other geckos rely on their tongues to keep their eyes moist, while leopard geckos simply blink, just like you and me!

• Leopard geckos often display a behavior known caudal luring. When hunting for food, they will sometimes raise their tails and wiggle it around to distract their prey. This usually allows them to grab the unsuspecting insect with their mouths while they are too busy focusing on the moving tail.

• Leopard geckos, like most other reptiles, periodically shed their skin as they grow. They are known to consume their old skin as it comes off. This allows them to recycle vitamins and minerals like calcium to they can remain healthy and robust for years to come.

Pickleball at The Landings

We are happy to announce that we have added an additional pickleball slot to accommodate the many Landings residents who are unable to play on Wednesday afternoons due to conflicts with other Landings’ events (golf, women’s tennis, etc.). Court 8

will be lined for pickleball on Mondays from 2:30 to 4:30 pm in addition to Sunday mornings at 9:30 am and Wednesday afternoons at 2:30 pm. This is the same schedule we had last year. Grab your paddles and join the fun.

Cozy Salmon Soup

It’s a healthy soup full of goodness for you.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1 bunch of green onions, chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

1 bell pepper, chopped

4 cups of stock or broth, chicken, or fish

2 carrots, thinly chopped

2 potatoes, thinly sliced

Dry oregano

Salt and pepper

2 salmon filets, without skin (can substitute cod)

Juice of 1 lemon

Directions:

Heat olive oil in a large pot.

Add the onions, garlic, and bell pepper, and cook until soft and fragrant.

Add both carrots, and potatoes to the pot.

Add oregano, salt, and pepper to taste.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat until the carrots and potatoes are tender.

Then, add the salmon and let simmer until the fish is cooked. Remove from heat and add lemon juice.

(Serves 2)

The Landings Artists Collaborative will hold an open Studio Show on Thursday, April 4 th from 10 am - 1 pm at The Landings Racquet Club, Lakeside Room. It is an excellent opportunity to see what our talented artists have created during the winter season. Many beautiful artworks will be on display and for sale.
