Initial Road Construction Meeting Held Pre-Construction Discussion

POLYNESIAN PARADISE

Stantec Consulting convened the first of the road construction meetings to be held during the restoration project. In attendance were multiple Gator Paving staff, C Squared (concrete contractor), roads committee members, and board members. The meeting was held via TEAMS inviting members unable to be present to attend.

Details of the project remain the same:

- Start date September 11 th ,

- Three phases representing three methods to be employed (refer to “Stages” e-mail for more detail),

- Time to completion 150 days.

Lines of authority and roles were defined.

All inquiries regarding the project should be directed to me, either at roads@thelandingsofsarasota. com or my personal e-mail elidaramberger@gmail.com.

The “roads” e-mail will be monitored during business hours. In the event of a roads’ related, non-911 type emergency, contact me at 609-915-7160.

All contractors have been advised that resident inquiries should come to me. The people working on-site are not authorized to deviate from the plans given them.

Discussion included recognizing

that The Landings may need to offer some flexibility during the project. For example, the people working in the field are expected to estimate the amount of time it takes to complete a task. If their estimate is not 100% accurate, there is the chance that they would need some extra time to complete the task, running past the 5 pm stop time. Your understanding of these circumstances is appreciated.

These updates are posted to The Landings website, under Resident Log-in, LMA, committees, roads. All updates will be available, by date and title.

Landings Volunteers Who Work for You

Following the Navy, Bill returned to Chicago and had another fortunate experience. Through a friend, he was given a contact at the Brinks Corporation, which provides cash and valuables management. That was the start of a 23-year career with the company.

He started in sales and by the time he retired, he was Vice-President of International Development. He worked in six states within the U.S. and in, or with, over 30 countries around the world.

This is the twelfth in a series of articles highlighting the special volunteers who help to make The Landings such a wonderful community. The Eagle interviewed Bill Whitman for this issue.

If you are a homeowner, attend LMA Board meetings, are at the LRC pool in the afternoons, Bill Whitman is a familiar face.

A Chicago area native, Bill was fortunate to receive a scholarship to Lake Forest Academy High School, which set him on the road to higher education at Colgate University where he was on the track and football teams. While in his sophomore year at Colgate (1957), he was approached by his former high school teacher who offered him a summer job driving a van for her students who were going to Europe for a learning experience.

That experience in Europe set the stage for Bill’s future international work. But most important, while in college he met Sue, who he reconnected with and married in 1967.

After college, Bill joined the Navy, where he served for two years stationed in Key West with a helicopter squadron.

He trained Brinks staff in those countries on all aspects of operations. When asked about what he learned the most while working internationally, Bill noted that in addition to picking up many languages, it gave him a better appreciation of democracy in the U.S.

For a while, after he retired from Brinks, he also worked in the air freight and security transportation business, based in Connecticut.

Sue’s parents had a place in Sarasota that she and Bill frequently visited. When visiting his in- laws in 1969, Bill would often run though The Landings and loved the community. They decided to buy a condo in 1972, on Siesta Key, which they still own. They loved Sarasota and moved full time to The Landings in 2002.

Their neighbor, Dick Bayles, was already involved in The Landings as a volunteer and together they joined the Landings Homeowners Board of Directors. Bill became President in 2008 and continues in that role to this day. As the President of the Landings Homeowners Association, he always attends LMA board meeting and for two terms also served on the LMA Board. He probably has attended more LMA Board meetings than anyone else in The Landings.

In addition, Bill has chaired the LMA Security Committee and has

been a long term member of the Eagle Committee. Bill is a frequent user of the LRC pool and can be found most afternoons enjoying the company of his buddies. Sue has also been involved and sings with the Landoliers.

When asked, Bill said that the best thing about The Landings is its location and people. Looking forward, he wants to ensure that the integrity (aesthetics and infrastructure) of The Landings be maintained. He also appreciates the respect neighbors have for each

The success of this project is not only how well the drainage is managed, how pedestrian safety is improved or how the restored roads will guard against deterioration, but also how we as neighbors encourage and/or work for a goal a common goal. And lastly, please give us feedback and share your ideas. If there are specifics you would like to read about in these updates, please let me know.

other, which is a valuable asset that needs to be maintained.

He is most proud of the fact that he has a strong LHA board that is positioned for the future.

Those of us who know Bill, know that he is a passionate patriot. He often speaks of his concerns about the lack of respect shown in our country and laments how divided we have become.

But most of all, The Landings has benefited from his leadership and volunteer activities on behalf of our community.

President’s Report ByJeffSmith

We have just met with the principals that will be working on the Roads Restoration Project. They include Gator Construction, C squared (concrete/drainage), Stantec, the LMA Board and Roads Committee members.

The Project will start midSeptember and our Roads Committee Chair, Elida Ramberger, will this month (and every month the project continues, update the project in greater detail in a separate article.

I do want to emphasize that I believe it is in our best interest the project proceeds as efficiently as possible as this will yield the highest quality performance in the least amount of time.

To this end, LMA is prepared to offer Gator and associated contractors flexibility with some of our normal limitations on contractors such as: time and place of entrance, duration of workday hours, exceptions to work on Saturday. Exceptions will be made only when the requests are reasonable and do not cause repeated and undue hardships for our residents.

I am pleased to report that the Digital Communication Committee has delivered a new and improved resident website in time to be an important communication conduit for the Roads Project. Thank you!

Your board encourages all our residents to get credentials for

the site and regularly refer to it for important information. Go to “thelandingsofsarasota. com” in the residents only page there will be a tab to register for first time users.

With the hurricane season upon us, it becomes even more important to access the website because this is one of the ways the LMA Emergency Task Force will communicate with our residents.

Our colleague and Security Chair, Mike Knupp, has taken an extended medical leave from his LMA responsibilities. I am sure you will join the Board in wishing him a speedy and relaxing recovery.

I have asked two of our on-site security committee members to help fill the wide gap created by Mike’s leave. Judy Greene will handle gate and incident related responsibilities and Amy Drachman will oversee the Security Appraisal follow up and financial/budget related matters.

I will back up both Judy and Amy. Because Judy is deeply involved in Security, we have decided to put the “wall project” (under her purview as Maintenance Chair) on a brief hold. Our Lakes continue to experience low water and high temperatures that promote

algae growth and low levels of oxygen that raise the potential for widespread fish kill. So far, we have avoided the fish kills that many of our neighboring communities have faced through a combination of effort and luck. Mid-month rainfall has bought us some time, but we are still a long way from recharging all our lakes to normal levels.

Ending this letter on a positive note, the Lakes Committee completed “pre-hurricane “clearing out the drainage/ditch leading out to the mangroves for Courtside Lake (Lake #5). LMA has three ditches that together channel the runoff from seven of our Lakes. All the ditches now flow unimpeded to the mangroves.

Back to School Party

On August 11, The Landings Kid’s Club, in collaboration with the Landings LMA and LRC held the annual “Landings Back to School Party”. It was a Luau party and the LRC was temporary transformed into an exotic Hawaiian garden. It was a beautiful sight to see the LRC decorated with vibrant colorful inflatables and water toys.

Many families braved the high temperature to cool off at the pool and enjoy some delicious treats. We had fruit platters, chicken and shrimp appetizers, and pizzas. We had plenty of beverages for the kids and this year, we

added some adult beverages, too.

We saw some familiar faces and new ones. We were very happy to welcome the new families.

It was a heartwarming moment to see the LRC pool filled with kids jumping and playing under the watchful eye of our lifeguard. Others preferred a game of cornhole toss and mini bowling.

The LRC was filled with laughter and joy. We always appreciate little moments like this where we can relax and share some food and drinks with our neighbors.

As usual, the Kona Ice truck was a big hit; both kids and adults appreciated the cool treats.

The Landings Kid’s Club wants to thank everybody who gladly volunteered their precious time in making this event such a success: The LMA for their financial support, the LRC and tennis team, Ronnie Day for putting on the decorations, Rick Waller for taking the pictures, Rose Goncalves and family for providing the lively music, and coordinating the food and refreshments. A special thanks to

the Granthon family and Above the Bar Hospitality group for coordinating and sponsoring the Kona Ice truck!

Our goal is to hold a few events like this one throughout the year for The Landings families. We would like to encourage all the families with kids to register for The Landings Kid’s Club at email landingskids@gmail.com. You will receive updates on all upcoming events so that our community can learn about neighbors, socialize, and make new friends in the process.

We hope to see you soon!

President’s Report

August heat and humidity limited some club events. Nonetheless, August activities included a tennis round robin, a happy hour, a trivia challenge, swimming pool Zumba and our annual back-to-school luau party.

In our program of continued maintenance, we made needed repairs to an air conditioner and to some of the fences.

Our committees are working on programs for the fall as more of our members return from their summer vacations. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer and please travel safely.

News from the Court

I was very happy to hear that Coco Gauff hired Brad Gilbert to her coaching team in August. I was fortunate to work with Brad Gilbert a few times when I was teaching at the Phoenician Resort and the Boulders Resort in Arizona. He is a master at spotting opponent’s weaknesses and helping you use your strengths in the most effective and efficient ways to help you win points. He keeps things simple at practice and helps you to have a clear understanding of the tactics and strategies to use against each individual opponent.

Plus, when things start to go wrong, he is a great problem solver. Brad also helps you to believe in yourself with his constant positive praises. It is no surprise to me that immediately after he was hired Coco won the Washington D.C. tournament.

Manager’s Report

Thank you to Rose Goncalves and her committee of Landings Children’s Club members for putting together a wonderful back to school summer luau pool party for all the kids in the community. The event was held on August 12 th and was sponsored in part by the Landings Racquet Club and LMA. The cool treats from Kona Ice were sponsored by Above the Bar Hospitality Group. I would also like to thank Roni Day for decorating the pool area in such a festive way. It was great to see all the kids and their parents enjoying an afternoon in and around the pool.

Summer will be winding down soon which means the Father/Son tournaments are right around the corner. The tournaments are on the schedule for November 14 th –19 th . If you are interested in being an ambassador for one or more of the Father/Son teams this year, please contact Ralph or Dee Ricapito at 356-7912 for more information.

The LRC annual mailing will be sent out later this year. Now is a great time to update your mailing address and other pertinent information with the Club, including an

emergency contact name and phone number. If you would like to receive your annual packet somewhere other than your Landings address, please contact the Tennis Pro Shop. As always, if you would like to receive weekly emails regarding upcoming events at the Club, please email me at lrctennis@hotmail.com and I will be happy to add you to my address book.

Currently we are in the middle of the annual court resurfacing project. We started with courts 7 & 8. After those two opened, we moved over to courts 1 & 2. By the time you read this, if Mother Nature cooperates, courts 1 & 2 will be finished, and we should be nearing the completion of courts 5 & 6. The last two courts to be resurfaced will be 3 & 4. The goal is to complete the project by the end of September.

Once the courts have been redone, to keep them playing well, we ask that members brush the courts when their match finishes after 5:00 pm. For your convenience, there is a brush hanging on every set of courts. It only takes a few minutes and it makes a world of difference. Thanks in advance for your assistance in helping to keep our courts in pristine condition.

Brad helped Andre Agassi win six grand slam titles and reach the number one ranking in the world. He also helped Andy Roddick win his only grand slam title and reach number one. I believe Brad will help Coco win a few grand slams and finally become our next American number one player in the world.

I strongly recommend that if you are playing competitive tennis that you check out his two famous books “Winning Ugly” and “I’ve Got Your Back”.

We will have a social round robin on Friday September 22 from 9:30 am -11 am. Please sign up at the pro shop.

Our pro exhibitions will resume on Friday October 27 from 3:30 pm-5 pm.

See you on the courts.

opportunity to compete with other kids his age and experience level, which didn't happen often.

“It’s such a beautiful neighborhood with so much to offer; we were never bored”, recalled Danzig.

Danzig was upset when his family moved out of The Landings in 1995. He promised himself that he would move to the neighborhood as an adult, so he could once again enjoy the beauty and adventure of being a Landings resident.

After The Landings, Danzig moved with his family to a house near Southside School, where he spent the remainder of his childhood.

Those familiar with The Landings have fallen in love with the neighborhood, and Landings resident Evan Danzig is no exception. He fulfilled his childhood promise of returning to The Landings as an adult.

Danzig was born in The Landings and spent the first eight years of his life in the neighborhood.

He attended the Out-of-Door Academy on Siesta Key. His parents were the first owners of 1724 Landings Boulevard.

“I loved growing up in The Landings”, said Danzig.

Danzig recalled the thrilling opportunities the neighborhood provided him and his friends to explore the outdoors. They were constantly in the pool and loved riding bikes on the Nature Trail.

As a child, he found a great community with the other children in the neighborhood. They enjoyed scouting the Eagle Preserve and spending time at the Racquet Club. His favorite memories from his childhood centered around the summer tennis camp at the Racquet Club. He said it was an

Danzig attended college at UCF in Orlando and studied real estate. He moved to New York City immediately after graduation. Danzig pursued real estate in New York City. Since 2011, he has been a residential real estate broker.

He met his wife, Carly, in New York. They married in 2015. Their daughter, Dakota, was born in 2018.

Danzig and his family moved back to The Landings in the Spring of 2021. His childhood influenced his decision, and he wanted a quiet gated community for his daughter to grow up in.

Danzig feels lucky that they found and renovated the perfect house. “The Landings is so unique and, in my opinion, the best location in town”, said Danzig.

Danzig is a local real estate agent with Michael Saunders. However, he still maintains his real estate sales business in New York City. He travels to New York multiple times per month.

Although it has been busy with the recent expansion to Sarasota, he enjoys being able to experience both locations.

Though Danzig and his family didn’t move into his childhood home, he couldn’t be happier to be a resident again.

He loves exploring nature trails and going on walks with his daughter. He enjoys walking up to The Landings Shopping Center for dinner. His daughter recently began taking tennis lessons at the Racquet Club. Danzig is happy and nostalgic that she can experience his favorite part of childhood.

Even though years have passed, Danzig doesn’t think much has changed. There have been beautiful updates to maintain the premises. He noticed the upgrades to the shopping center and believes it is a luxury to have nearby. Besides that, he says it’s the same

neighborhood he fell in love with as a child.

He especially appreciates the consistency throughout the years of the variance in architecture.

He recognizes that many gated communities contain homes that look almost identical. However, the Landings’ variety makes it unique and special.

A significant part of any neighborhood is the people and community. Danzig recounts that everyone he has met has been super friendly. He recalls the large number of young families in

The Landings when he grew up. Danzig notices that there aren’t as many now but sees it may revert to that trend with more

young families moving in. Overall, he believes the neighborhood consists of a great mix of people.

To anyone growing up in The Landings today, Danzig advises you to enjoy it. He says children should take advantage of the great opportunities in the neighborhood. The Landings is a great place to walk, bike, run, and explore. He urges everyone to go outside and appreciate nature.

On the opportunities of The Landings, Evan said, “Very few neighborhoods offer all of that, and in this day and age with so much technology around us, it’s really a luxury to have all of that right outside your door.”

Compost Update

The first compost station in The Landings has been carefully monitored and adjusted since our last update in the July issue of the Eagle.

Susan Singer and several dedicated Landings resident volunteers have continued to diligently care for the compost bins over the summer months and aided by modifications suggested by Tracie Troxler of Sunshine Community Compost.

As of mid-August, bins 1, 2, and 3 were ready to be sifted and put to good use. As such, Susan and volunteers have been working towards sifting and bagging the mulch (into an earth friendly paper bags).

At the time of this update, ideas for distribution of the mulch include donating to the LMA Landscape Committee and/or distribute to participants who want a first cycle

sample of the compost.

As Susan pointed out, “It would be great to begin anew with a second cycle of our compost bins so we can have another batch ready by the end of the year.” We will begin the second cycle of composting in September. The lessons we learned in our first compost cycle are using fewer ‘browns’ on top of each food scrap deposit, using fewer leaves and more high nitrogen content dense wood twigs, straw, and woodchips as our ‘browns’, and remembering to not add animal products, dairy items, or oils.

Please note that if you have already been signed up for the composting, you will be contacted by email about the opening date of cycle 2 of the compost station. If you have already been signed up and do not receive an email, please let me know at mkaufmanphd@gmail.com.

Introducing the New LMA Website ByEddieGoldstein,ChairDigitalCommunicationsCommittee

A community wide email was sent August 14 th announcing the new LMA Resident Website. By the time you are reading this article, hopefully you will have had the chance to log in, look around, and perhaps provide feedback.

The culmination of many months of work by the LMA Digital Communications Committee and other dedicated community volunteers, we hope that you will find this new communication center to be relevant and easy to use.

Why Did We Create a New Resident Website?

In early 2022, the Landings Management Association (LMA) recognized that The Landings needed a website that would be a useful tool for the entire community. LMA appointed a Website Committee to address issues identified with the former website: e.g., lack of user- friendliness, difficulty navigating and finding information, lack of security, out-of-date information, and lack of centralized website administration. The Committee has worked steadily since then, analyzing needs, developing strategy, identifying resources, and ultimately creating and implementing the newly released resident website.

This past Spring two very important LMA initiatives reinforced the need for a new site: From the Landings Resident Survey results, the following was cited as one of the top two priority areas identified by residents: “Better communication (LMA Comms + Website)” and identified as High Priority in the LMA Five Year Plan: “Upgrade website to improve user interface/user experience + ensure updating and data accuracy”.

Note: you can find both complete documents in the LMA News section of the website: (https://residents. thelandingsofsarasota.com/lma-news/).

The release of the new site is a significant and foundational step towards realizing these goals.

Volunteers and Vendors

The volunteer Committee (now called the Digital Communications Committee) members are Eddie Goldstein (Chair), Dick Bayles, John McFetridge, Elida Ramberger. We appreciate the extremely helpful involvement by many members of the LMA Board, the Governance Committee, several Committee Chairs and Association Presidents, and Kevin Lechlitner and LRC Staff. The vendors we work with are Suncoast Marketing (for the build and hosting) and Pinnacle Property Management, who will be maintaining logins, updates, and the Resident Directory.

How to Access and Log into the Site

To open the login page, go to https:// residents.thelandingsofsarasota.com/.

Click the Login button at the top of the page. Enter the exact same username and password you currently use to access the former resident portion of the website (new credentials not needed), and press LOG IN.

If you do not have, or do not know, your username and password, select the REGISTER button. Complete the registration form, and you will be supplied with the proper credentials within 24-48 hours. See complete instructions with links in the Aug. 14 email.

Tour of The Site

The best way to tour the site is….to go the site! But below is an overview of what you will find:

Home Page: After logging in you will land on the homepage where you will see topical announcements and links (e.g., Roads Restoration Project Updates). The Search Box is in the upper right-hand

corner appears on every page.

Calendar: Updated continually, this interactive calendar displays all Landings events, activities, and business meetings, indicating if they are for all Landings Residents, or for LRC members only; each post includes relevant information about the event. There are also clear instructions on how to schedule an event. We thank the LRC staff for maintaining this very important resource.

Resident Directory: This is sortable by association or keyword. You are invited to check your individual profile and submit any corrections or changes via the form provided.

Landings Management Association (LMA): Board members and contact information, Board minutes, finances, governing docs, committees, and news (president’s reports, the 5 Year Plan, the recent survey results).

Committees: A list of all LMA Committees, with links to individual pages for each committee.

We welcome community involvement, so please reach out to relevant Committee Chairs if you would like to get involved or have suggestions.

Associations: A map of all Landings Associations (there are 21!), with links to individual pages for each Association.

Racquet Club: Information and resources for LRC members.

Resident Resources: Links to Eagle newspaper (current and past issues), and various resources of topical interest, maps, forms, Dwelling Live information.

Emergency Information: Procedures, contact information, links to County resources.

Your Site, Your Input. Success Depends on Feedback The success of the website - its relevance, utility, and user friendliness -

depends on community feedback now and in the future. Perennially a "work in progress” the goal is continuous improvements in response to user interaction and comments. All suggestions and comments will be reviewed and implemented as appropriate and as resources permit. We are looking forward to hearing from you! web@ thelandingsofsarasota.com

On the Horizon for the Digital Communications Committee

As needs were identified, the taskforce that was originally founded to address the website only has now evolved into a group titled the Digital Communications Committee. The recent website release is just one piece of an entire strategy aimed at improving LMA Digital Communications overall.

Other areas being worked on are: development of a revised public facing Landings website; establishment of a single, secure, managed database of resident information integrated with multiple systems that support our community; improving email communications; revising LMA forms so that they are standardized and web based; clarification of new resident processes and procedures (in conjunction with the LMA Governance & Security Committees); collaboration with the Eagle Newspaper Committee, assisting Committee charged with implementing a Landings facility on site that can provide the high-quality audio/visual experience needed for LMA board and other meetings.

How Can You Help?

If you have skills that you think can be helpful, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact me at e.goldstein5@gmail.com.

SUMMER INFLATABLES

Happiness Is…New Beginnings

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. – Nelson Mandela

At Abel’s, they believe ice cream might be a close second.

And September is the best time of the year to enjoy both ice cream and education. This month, Abel’s is featuring their selection

of late-summer favorites, including Hawaiian Fruit Cup (Tropical Coconut ice cream with pineapple chunks and strawberries…a truly refreshing treat!), and Key Lime Pie (We’re based in South Florida so we know Key Lime done right…delicious Key Lime ice cream filled with chunks of baked pie crust.)

Head on in today to enjoy a sweet cup, cone or shake. Abel’s is located at 1886 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota in the South Bridge Plaza. Polynesian Paradise

This summer we were fortunate to spend three weeks in French Polynesia to celebrate my husband Jeff’s 70 th birthday (don’t tell anyone!). I expected a variant of Hawaii, given its proximity. We were stunned by Polynesia’s natural beauty, and enjoyed meeting the friendly locals who embrace their ethnic culture in day- to-day, more so than seen on Hawaii.

The Polynesian islands are often encircled by coral reefs called atolls, creating vibrant turquoise lagoons.

Green-felted Mountain peaks from ancient volcanoes drop precipitously to the sandy shores.

So, where the heck is French Polynesia? It’s in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, due south of Hawaii, below the equator. A mere 8 hours flying time from LAX, not so bad.

They are a French colony, made up of 118 islands that span 1200 miles, yet their landmass fits inside Rhode Island! Tahiti is one of the larger islands, containing the capital Papeete; other popular islands you may have heard of are Bora Bora and Moorea. The 250,000 Polynesians are friendly and warmhearted, taking pride in their distinct culture which includes tribal tattoos, music, and dancing.

After spending a week relaxing in a seaside house on the island of Moorea, we took a cruise with Paul Gaugin to sample some of the other islands. There was a fun mix of passengers, with many from France, Australia, and New Zealand.

We loved the local dishes such as poke tuna bowls, fresh mahi mahi, parrot fish, and tropical fruits like mangos, kiwis, and papayas. Since July is dry season, the weather was delightful, with highs of 78 degrees and lows of 74; way more comfortable than humid hot Florida in July!

Every day brought a new adventure. We e-biked through the mountains to riding wave runners to explore the coastline.

It was energizing to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters, swimming past vibrant coral gardens filled with schools of colorful tropical fish, spotting the occasional moray eel or octopus to keep us on our toes. We spotted humpback whales from the ship, migrating northward from Antarctica and sipped fruity Mai Tais on a catamaran sunset sail. What’s not to like?

One day, we swam in a shallow lagoon with slippery stingrays and supposedly friendly 5-foot Blacktip sharks.

It was nerve wracking to see a school of sharks swim directly at us, encircling us just fingertips away, seriously?? Guess what?

Kevin Lechlitner from LRC told me that we have lots of these Blacktip sharks just off our coast.

The last part of our voyage took us to the remote Tuamotu Islands, each island comprises a circle of narrow coral atolls about a half a mile wide but has no center mainland like the bigger islands. These islands are tight- knit communities with just a few hundred residents; it takes a multi-day ferry ride to get to modern facilities on the capital island of Tahiti. To attend high school, island kids who must go to boarding school on Tahiti; local women go to Tahiti when they are seven months pregnant to deliver their babies. Given no natural water supply, they collect rainwater and occasionally must ship it in. It’s hard to imagine being that far from “civilization”, yet most residents seemed content with their peaceful island existence, happy to avoid the busy traffic and commerce on Tahiti.

French Polynesia surely lived up to its reputation as a tropical paradise, and luckily it isn’t yet over-touristed. It fit the bill as a tranquil getaway, full of adventure, dramatic landscapes, and pristine beaches. I’m ready to return!

Fishing at the Gazebo

They sing “summertime….and the living is easy”. Not so fishing at the Gazebo. Both the number and quantity of fish caught on each outing in August has been significant. Mostly mangrove snapper, some of significant size, and for the first time this year, several good size black drum.

Also, an occasional toad fish and silver jenny. Even a sting ray. Recently, the fish whisperer was joined by John Weeks. If you, a family member or guest is interested in learning to fish at the gazebo, contact the Fish Whisperer at nfpconsultingresources@gmail.com He provides free lessons and tackle.

CRITTER OF THE MONTH Bearded Dragon

Our store has many bearded dragons available in all sizes and age.

Perhaps the most popular pet lizard, bearded dragons are originally from the deserts of central Australia. "Bearded" refers to the extendable flap of skin under their chin that turns black when they are stressed, displaying dominance or being territorial. They are usually even-tempered, docile, easy to tame, bond closely with their caretakers and are generally hardy when cared for properly.

Typical bearded dragon appearance & behavior

• Tolerates handling and interaction with humans

• In nature, their skin is tan-colored, but they have been bred for a variety of di erent colors and patterns

• Communicate with each other through gestures such as “arm waving,” in which they lift a front leg and wave it back and forth in submission to another lizard.

• They also bob their head as part of their mating ritual or to display dominance

• Will spend their day in a hiding spot, basking and climbing.

Going to the Dogs

I bet I am the only dog in The Landings who has a Ph.D. in Treatology. Yes, it is an actual program at Dog University.

I am a seven-year-old Jack Russell and Corgi mix and as my owners Lou and Amy Grossman say, “And God knows what else!”

I was rescued in Arcadia when I was about four years old. My owners claim everything I am quite the showman and everything I do makes them laugh all day long.

My tail is in constant motion. I patiently wait every night for my chewie that Lou drops on the kitchen floor. I run, grab it, and hightail it to my cage in the spare bedroom. That’s it for the rest of the evening. I’m off duty entertaining.

Mealtime is one of my favorite times of the day. I jump and twirl in the air until the bowl is put on the floor. I am also an acrobat.

Oh, I am quite the ladies’ man, too. I follow Amy everywhere she goes around the house and when female guests arrive, I choose to sit by them. Hey, I am a cool dude.

Lou’s role in this is to take me for walks and give me treats.

I’m fairly popular in The Landings due to my enchanting eyes and winning smile. I know how to get treats. However, Raccoons and feral cats should beware. My German Shepherd side appears, and my bark is ferocious. I’m not fond of speeders either, by the way. Stop sign runners, GRRRRRRR…

Lou and Amy say I give them so much joy. That’s my job, as I see it. I guess I rescued them.

Be sure to text (941-855-0347) or email Karen (grandmalipstick7@ gmail.com) for your photo shoot and dog bio. There are a lot of us fur babies in The Landings.

- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Remove the small side muscle from the scallops, rinse with cold water and thoroughly pat dry. Season scallops with salt and pepper, to taste. Working in batches, add scallops to the skillet in a single layer and cook, flipping once, until golden brown and translucent in the center, about 1-2 minutes per side. Set aside and keep warm.

- Serve scallops immediately with lemon butter sauce, garnished with parsley, if desired.

Lemon Butter Sauce Instructions

- Melt butter in the skillet. Add garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in lemon juice, season with salt and pepper, to taste

Walking is important because:

It can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years, old to spend an additional 5-months in a nursing home at $7000 per month. I must walk early in the morning before my brain figures out what I’m doing.

If you’re going cross country walking, start with a real small country.

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he’s 97 years old and we don’t know

where he is.

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. I haven’t lost a pound. Apparently, you must go there!

My walk in the hills, had its upand-downs.

Try a brisk walk on the Nature Trail and enjoy the outdoors; the natural surroundings clear the mind. Also, another reason to take up walking so that you can hear heavy breathing again!!!

The Landings January bike outing to Myakka Park was a great success. Lots of gators and wildlife seen throughout the park including this limpkin, pictured above. The Bird and Canopy Walk were closed due to Hurricane Ian damage but we were able to identify some great hiking trails to explore on our own and during future visits.

It’s general knowledge, “a grandparent is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend.” We’re a mixture of those three little bits that make for one of the greatest joys life can gift us. Being a grandparent is different

from being a parent like vanilla and chocolate ice cream. It’s something we never would have shown our sons or daughters- like slipping them a candy bar or allowing staying up later watching TV on the sofa when babysitting.

But, for moms, it’s a job that requires no experience, gives no training, pays nothing, and has no days off! Yet, “home is where your mom is”. (Remember who made you!)
