LANDINGS RESIDENT PROFILE, RUDY BLOMN

Did you know that The Landings has one of the largest mangrove habitats in all of Sarasota County? Between our homes and the Intercoastal Waterway and Philippi Creek is 78 continuous acres of salt water tolerant mangroves, 80% owned by Landings Associations. The Landings owns a remarkable 14% of all coastline mangroves (excluding islands and keys) in the entire 37 miles of Sarasota County coast. Many coastline mangroves in the Sarasota area were removed years ago for development, replaced by seawalls and hardscape. It’s been a tragic loss of one of the most important native habitats in Florida. Mangroves are critical for filtering storm water, both cleansing it and slowing its flow into the bay. The protective elevated roots support juvenile fish, resupplying stocks for fishing. Dense tree growth is a haven for wildlife, especially migrating birds such as white pelicans. And perhaps most important to property owners, mangroves help protect against intense storm surges driven by hurricane winds. Mangroves keep the soil intact and prevent erosion on water outflows. In short, they are an important but often overlooked player in The Landings security infrastructure. Realizing their importance for flood protection, the LMA Lakes & Drainage Committee commissioned a 5-person task force to investigate the health of our mangroves and assess any threats. After 3 months of intensive research, the findings were presented at the October LMA Board meeting.

The good news is that the research showed that our coastal and inland waterway mangroves are in excellent condition and holding their own in terms of their acreage. The bad news is that on the inland side, some of that acreage is being destroyed by invasive plants, primarily Brazilian Pepper trees. Peppers grow to heights of 30 feet and extend a dense canopy over the mangroves, shutting off sunlight and killing the plants. This encroachment jeopardizes flood protection as it narrows the protective barrier between residents and the shoreline. The task force, with the assistance of the County Extension mangrove specialist, mapped out the problem areas. Two were high priority: The area behind the Landings Racquet Club, mostly on clubowned property; second, the area at the head of the Nature Trail which is part of the water management system. While the latter can likely be remedied with funding from our Lakes budget, the LRC area is a larger project requiring a minimum of $40,000 for removal of the exotics and replanting with new mangroves and Florida native plants. Continued vigilance is needed in future years to remove invasives when they are small and easy to eradicate. The task force identified two sources of outside grant funding which, best case, could provide funds for half the cost of the minimum $40K project. The remaining dollars would need to be funded by

some combination of the LMA, LRC, and any other donating associations. At the October LMA meeting, the task force presenter noted: “It’s never a good time to ask a homeowner’s association for new funds to address a problem, especially not given the increase in our insurance and the recent roads assessment. But mangroves are a vital part of protecting ourselves, our property, and the ecology of the bay. We’ve taken them for granted for too long and now need to give them some care.” Interestingly, removal of invasive plants was rated as high or medium priority by 74% of Landings residents in the 2023 survey, suggesting that there may be broad community support for the work that needs to be done. The task force plans to raise awareness of this unique mangrove habitat through information sharing and events such as plant identification tours, International Mangrove Day celebration, mangrove grow kits for kids and adults, invasive removal days, and kayak outings. If you a re i nterested i n lea r n i ng more or participating in this important effort, please contact one of the task force members: Suzanne BeDell, Doug Booth, Alice Howard, Maralyn Kaufman- David, and Paul Weiner. The summary presentation of the task force is on The Landings website under LMA/ Committees/Lakes & Drainage Committee.

This is the fourteenth in a series of articles highlighting the work of special volunteers who help to make The Landings such a wonderful community. The Eagle interviewed Dee Ricapito for this issue. When Dee enters a room, she lights it up with her personality. She is outgoing, has a great smile and describes herself as a “party girl who likes to have fun”. Read on and you will learn that she is so much more. She grew up in Philadelphia. In high school, she was on the hit television show American Bandstand. Some of her classmates were Fabian, Frankie Avalon, and Chubby Checker. After high school, Dee worked for General Electric for 9 years. During that time, she started her college studies, met, and married her husband Ralph, and had their one child in 1972. In 1977, she received her bachelor’s degree in education from Trenton College, Magnum Cum Laude, and began her teaching career at Christ the King Elementary School in Philadelphia. She also was a girls tennis coach at Arch Bishop Ryan High School. Ralph was, and is, a big part of her life. He received a Doctor in Education degree from Temple University, taught high school, had a very successful football coaching career at his school and worked on the sidelines for the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team. His doctoral studies brought him to Sarasota over four summers. While there, they purchased and still own a House of the Sun condo on Siesta Key where for several years they visited as snowbirds. When they were ready to move to Sarasota full-time, they looked for a tennis community and found The Landings where they purchased the condo on Landings Blvd near the club. They use their Siesta Key condo as a local getaway

and investment. In the late 80s, Dee & Ralph founded the Nutrition & Diet Center which sold the Cambridge Diet and became National Directors. In the interim, she found time to get her real estate license, too. In addition to tennis, they have traveled around the globe including, most of Europe, Austria, Holland, Egypt, China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Russia, and every state in the U.S. except North Dakota. Dee has been a very active and successful volunteer in The Landings. She served seven years on the LMA board and chaired the Communications and Social Committee. She was instrumental in adding programs for children and was able to get a Sarasota County matching grant to build the tot playground just outside the South Gate at the Phillipe Shores Park. She also worked with FPL to improve lighting in the community. Dee has been a stalwart working on the Eagle. She was involved in getting it’s first editor/publisher, (Landings resident Irvin Starr), who sold it to the current publisher, 27 th State Media. She currently is on the Eagle Committee and is a regular contributor of articles, jokes and menus. Dee was involved when LMA updated their documents, served on the committee that negotiated the use of what is now Bayles Park, and organized LMA’s first “meet and greet” newcomers’ event. Early on, Dee was instrumental with the start of Memorial and Veterans Day events in The Landings. She and Ralph were founders of the Landings Free College and have been involved as volunteers for the LRC Father Son Tournaments, where Dee is also the chair for team ambassadors. The two of them also started The Landings Library.

Dee still plays a lot of tennis and was co-captain with Carole Welch of the 3.5 ladies tennis team that won their Tri Cities Division. She has also been one of the organizers of Pickleball in The Landings. She definitely needs to add the title “volunteer extraordinaire” to her name. When asked what The Landings has meant to her, she said, “It’s the wonderful, friendly, and talented people who live in the community. I love the open spaces and the interesting people that are so much fun to be around”. When asked what her hopes and aspirations are for The Landings, she said, “I want residents, in the future, to continue to add ‘plusses’……more activities for all ages…. children and families”. Dee is and has been one of The Landings special volunteers!

President’s Report Dear Neighbors, The last few weeks have been a whirl of activity on the financial side as we finalize the proposed 2024 budget. While there are many important LMA activities now taking place, the fact that so many board initiatives are intertwined with next year’s budget makes it worthwhile to devote the entire letter to the budget process. The draft proposed 2024 budget was “previewed” duri ng the October 5 th board meeting. Although still in a “draft stage”, the budget task force wanted to share the information then available with residents so that a f uller discussion could be achieved in the Town Hall Meeting scheduled for October 19 th . At the time of this writing (October 15 th ), the indicated annual assessment of $1,350 per resident for operating expenses ($1,279 in 2023) and $500 for reserve funding ($396 in 2023) will be presented for discussion at t he Tow n Hall meet i ng. I should mention that the amount selected for the reserve is taken directly from the reserve study we commissioned from Florida Reserve Study and Appraisal, Inc. with one notable exception: the amount of reserve for roads was kept at $250 per resident consistent with our promise to keep the road reserve contribution at 2023 levels (the recommended amount per reserve study was $326). The task force and finance

committee have discussed the idea of giving residents the option of paying the reserve portion of the annual assessment on July 1. The thinking is that this may assist some of our residents by spreading out the reserve portion of the annual assessment away from the beginning of the year when LMA, Association, and LRC assessments are typically due. We are seeking residents’ feedback on this idea. The budget task force took a new direction in the formation of this year’s budget. It was based on the extensive Five-Year Plan your leadership worked on earlier this year. More than 30 individuals, i nclud i ng com m it te e head s, association presidents and board members were interviewed with the results contained in the FiveYear Plan. (The Five-Year Plan is available on the resident’s web site*). In addition, the budget process was informed by the results of the resident’s survey (also on the resident’s web site). The plan and the survey made clear the following priorities: - A conservative fiscal approach designed to build a strong balance sheet able to withstand adversity without resorting to a special assessment. - The importance of financial transparency - The importance of community building - The importance of invasive

species control - High satisfaction with our mature landscape, nature trail, gazebo, lakes, and the Eagle publication. The Proposed 2024 Budget has embraced these priorities. In the budget you will find: - Operating expenses were capped at a 5% increase from 2023. - S e c u r it y a nd L a ke s a nd Drainage expenses were reduced in order that more funds could be directed to Digital Communications (community building/financial transparency/Eagle), mangrove protection, presentation technology and landscaping (Nature Trail). - Reserves were strengthened and a multiyear funding schedule was established that is consistent with 100% full funding. The final step in the budget process is the vote to be held at the November 2 nd Board Meeting. We invite you to attend in person or by Zoom. *landingsofsarasota.com

President’s Report By Beth Cotner It is October and members are quickly making their way back to the club. We are all excited to see our friends and neighbors after the long, hot summer. Our club is currently prepping for the upcoming USTA Father/ Son Tennis Tournament. LRC members act as hosts for the many pairs of fathers and sons who are competing in this event. In

addition to hosting a lunch for all participants, members, if asked, provide participants with dinner or entertainment recommendations. The tournament is always one of the season’s highlights. Also in October, the club hosted a successful happy hour and resumed the popular game of pickleball. Crystal Sound Baths, Water Zumba, and Trivia as well as

Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner

By Adrian “Mo” Moghina We lc om e b a c k t e n n i s enthusiasts! Hope you had a great summer of tennis. In the past couple of years, The Landings has had many new residents that have not played tennis before or haven’t played in a long time but now are very interested in playing. It is important that I go over some basic r u les a nd ten n is etiquette because tennis etiquette matters. As far as dress code, shirts are required to be always worn and can be of any color. The most important part of our dress code is the proper shoes. You must wear tennis shoes or athletic shoes with non-marking soles. No cross training or running shoes are allowed as they can damage the clay court surface. When you are coming to the courts from the swimming pool area, please lower your voice or be very quiet when you are going to use the middle pathway to get to your court. Don’t walk across a ten n is court that has players on it to reach you r cou r t. Obv iously don’t do it during a point in progress or even after the point is over. You will distract them

I f a te n n i s ba l l f rom you r court happens to be mishit and b ou nces or rol l s over to t he court next to yours, don’t run over there to pick up the ball if the players on that court are in the middle of play. Instead, you can alert them by saying “sorry incoming ball” and let them give you the ball back. Whenever you see that the tennis courts are very wet with puddles you should not walk across the courts and NEVER run on a very wet clay court as you might slip and fall and get injured. When you use the ball machine du r i ng or a f ter of f ice hou rs always pick up all the tennis ba l ls t hat you h it outside of the tennis court that you were playi ng on. Also, please pay attention to the weather and if there is a good chance of rain make sure that you pick up the balls in time. This way the balls and the

ball machine don’t get wet and you don’t risk damag i ng the machine. One of the most important things to do when playing tennis is to treat your opponents with courtesy and respect. Also, if you are not sure if a ball is in or out the rule of thumb is to give your opponent the benefit of the doubt and call it in. Don’t go along with the phrase “if in doubt call it out”. If you are interested in more tennis rules and etiquette, you c a n f i n d m o r e i n f o r m at i o n o n t h e i n t e r n e t a t h t t p s:// ten n iscompan ion.org/ten n isetiquette/ or you can ask me, Jen or Sandra. The tactics and strateg y involved because of the different ages and playing styles is very interesting to watch. These are some of the best doubles problem solvers in the country. See you on the courts!

For our seasonal residents who spend their summers away from Sarasota, welcome back! Some have already returned, and others will be heading back soon. We had a very hot, dry and busy summer while you were away. The court resurfacing project was completed in late September and is ready for season. The Fitness Center got a fresh coat of paint and new rubberized flooring. Some repair work was completed on the tennis court fences. T he pa rk i ng lot wa s redone with pavers and looks fantastic! Finally, we just installed a new ice and water dispenser by the coffee bar. T he end of t he yea r is approach i ng a nd now is t he time to throw your hat in the ring to serve on the 2024 LRC Board of Directors. If you are i nterested, you must subm it your name and a brief list of your quali ficat ion s to Kevi n Lechlitner in the Tennis Pro Shop by December 5 th . There are three positions up for election. They are Paige Packman, Paul Weiner, and Beverly Austgen. If we have more people interested in being on the board than available openings, there will be an election at the

LRC Annual Meeting in January of 2024. Last year we had teams from 29 different states and a total of 58 teams between the three divisions. I’m hoping for another turnout like we had last year. For many of the players, this is their favorite tournament of the year. A lot of that can be attributed to the attention they get from their ambassadors. It is a personal touch that they don’t get at any of the other n at io n a l c h a mp io n s h ip s. I f you are interested in being an ambassador during the event this year, please contact Ralph & Dee Ricapito at 941- 356-7912. Beginning November 1 st , the peak time rule goes back into effect. It states that if you have a guest in your group at 9:30 am or 11:00 am you can only reserve the court one day in advance. Find your joy Sarasota’s #1 consignment shop  The joy of shopping  The joy of giving  The joy of recycling  The joy of supporting students and the arts in our community

What do you wish you had known when you first purchased a property in The Landings? How hectic were those days? Confusion and questions as you searched for your toothbrush? The Welcoming Committee is working to provide answers to those questions while hopefully reducing the confusion and the stress! We have consulted with old and new owners and are near completion of the Welcome Packet which will hopefully help “newbies” with their transition into The Landings and the nearby community. It will not, however, help them find their toothbrush! To date, we have taken a threepronged approach to gathering information for new residents: La nd i ngs Helpf u l Hi nt s, commercial assets in the nearby community, and cultural options to enjoy in the greater Sarasota area. The Helpful Hints page will i n c lude phon e nu m b e r s for emergenc y sit uat ion s a nd some practical “need to know” information, e.g., how to log onto to the LMA website and whom to call if that doesn’t work, when to put the garbage out; well, you get the idea! To help new owners navigate the nearby community, we have gathered coupons and gifts from nearby business establishments including a wine opener from Sea Grape Wine Shop, gift cards from several restaurants (Tripletail, Apollonia, and Origin Pizza Café) and there are more in the works. We also have a Publix welcome packet. In the area of the visual and

p er for m i ng a r t s, we h ave a secured a discount from the wonderful Sarasota Ballet for a 20% discount for a pair of tickets for any performance during the 2023-24 season! We also have a discounted membership for Arts Advocates (15 months for a 12-month fee). Additionally, we are including an information packet from the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota. This list is an incomplete sampling of the benefits- effective October 13, 2024- that we are hoping our residents will enjoy to their fullest. A committee member has made a personal contact with the couple of new owners of whom we have knowledge; the contacts were much appreciated. I am sure there are more new folks who are unknown to us. It is the committee’s intent to make an in-person contact with all new owners and deliver the Welcome Packet while providing an in-person resource. The Welcom ing Com m ittee will also work with The Landings Racquet C lub (LRC) to host a Newcomers’ Reception, currently scheduled for February 28 at 5 p.m. at the LRC. Getting acquainted and making new friends is the goal of this event. Specific planning has not yet begun, but we hope all new owners will be available to attend. This new committee is a work in progress and will hopefully be a value-added activity for all of us. The committee encourages all of you to join us in this project and/or offer ideas and suggestions. As I say repeatedly- it takes a village!

As frequent visitors to Sarasota, we're not sure how we managed to miss this place in the past. Now that we have found it, we will be back to sample everything. We tried the stone crab chowder and the grouper tacos. Both were delicious and loaded with fish. Our tacos were dressed with a pineapple, watermelon salsa and accompanied by a side of wheatberry salad which had just the right balance of sweet and tangy. Our son also raved about his broiled tripletail which came with fresh green beans and potatoes. Prices, including beer, were reasonable and portions were plentiful.

Landings Resident Profile

Rudy Blomn, an electric life and passionate photographer By Emma Shaughnessy Immigrating to a new country is a challenging feat on its own, but the transition is even more difficult without knowing the native language. One Landing’s resident, Rudy Blohm, came to the United States with minimal experience speaking the English language, yet learned quickly and had a successful engineering career. B or n out s ide o f C olog n e, Germany, Rudy started working as an electrical engineer at a young age. He studied engineering at college, then went on to work in coal mining for a German company focused on research and measuring equipment. In 1970, Rudy immigrated to the United States and spent 10 years at Chrysler in Detroit, MI as a Maintenance Supervisor. Rudy’s biggest challenge at work was the language barrier. Coming from a limited English background, Rudy spent his first two years on the job becoming fluent. He w at c h e d T V t o l e a r n new words and expressed his appreciation of his coworkers for their kindness and helpfulness. After Chrysler, Rudy worked as a Project Engineer for the Stroh Brewery Company, where he wrote computer programs for production lines and hired contractors to install the equipment. When Stroh closed the company, Rudy moved to Florida and worked as a Project Manager at Sidel, a

French company. Rudy had many opportunities to travel across the world for his jobs at Stroh and Sidel, but he enjoyed his travels to Romania most. Rudy and his wife, Gaye, lived there for 12 months while Rudy completed two production lines for CocaCola. When Rudy was not busy at work, he enjoyed connecting with the locals and learning about their culture and unique ways of life. Rudy was surprised to see the Romanians, in the northern part of the country, using hand tools to work in the fields and driving horse and buggies. He joked that he felt like he traveled back in time 50 years! In Romania, Rudy was also fascinated by how well the locals spoke English given their dated technology. He was interested to discover that they watched movies with English subtitles to learn the language- a similar tactic to how Rudy learned English many years ago. Rudy’s career as an electrical engineer extends to The Landings, as well. He has served on the Roads Committee for nearly 15 years, meeting with notable people and engineering companies to make the best decisions for the community. Rudy also served on the Racquet Club Committee for 10 years and spearheaded the extension to the exercise home, including an updated pool side building, a

new maintenance building, and walkways. Additionally, Rudy served on the LMA Board for three years, and was involved in the building of a new gazebo at the intercoastal waterway in The Landings. He was also the President of LS2 for five years. In addition to his passion for engineering, Rudy has a knack for photography. He has been taking photos for as long as he can remember, starting with black & white and slides. As photographic tech nolog y developed, Rudy shifted to digital cameras and never looked back. Rudy enjoys capturing landscapes, flowers, and birds the most. He uses a 24-inch photo printer to print his images on canvas, then frame and hang them around their condo. Living in a place as beautiful as The Landings certainly helps fuel Rudy’s passion for photography. He loves stepping away from the busyness of US-41 to take photos of the scenery and to relax. The definition of a hard worker in every sense, Rudy Blohm did Rudy on trip to Rocky National Park. not allow the initial language barrier to inhibit his engineering and photography pursuits. His engineering career allowed him to work on interesting projects across the world, including right here in The Landings, and his keen eye for photography certainly does not go unnoticed. Rudy is truly a master of his crafts. Photo of penguins in Antartica taken by Rudy.

Treating and Staining the Gazebo By Paul Weiner, Chairman Landscaping Committee, LMA In 2014, Ramsey Frangie, a resident of The Landings, designed and built the Gazebo, replacing its predecessor whose pilings were apparently not dug deeply enough. Everything on the gazebo, except the

rafters is made of sustainable Brazilian Walnut hardwood. With time, the wood became faded in appearance. As I was recently staining the gazebo with

a protective coat, I was informed that the rafters, which are made of cedar had a termite problem. As it turns out, Brazilian hardwood is impervious to termites as it is extremely hard. The rafters are a different story.

Gazebo is tented to treat structure for termites.

Before oil is applied to gazebo.

Gazebo gets an oil job!

The gazebo looks grand after work is done.

Ultimately, the gazebo was tented to treat the termites and a fresh coat of oil applied. Here are some photos of the gazebo before, during, and after the maintenance.

Day Tripping Punta Gorda By Betty Greenspan

Imagine my surprise when I opened a copy of the Sarasota Herald Tribunes Ticket on Thursday October 5th and read “Road Trip” on the fron- page featuring Punta Gorda! That was the very day we were heading south to visit Punta Gorda and Fisherman’s Village. Coincidence, who knows, but it was a very pleasant surprise and helped me with my lunch choice. There was no traffic, and the drive took 55 minutes on I-75.

History

Punta Gorda was founded in 1884 on the instructions of entrepreneur, Isaac Trabue. Surveyor Kelly Harvey began working on the subdivision of Trabue which was filed in Manatee County on February 24, 1885. With streets and blocks arranged along the southern shores of the Peace River at its mouth on Charlotte Harbor. Every waterfront block was designated as a park, a legacy that serves the city to this day with a string of public parks connected by Trabue Harbor Walk, a 2.5-mile-

long public promenade. Incorporated on December 7, 1887, after the arrival of the railroad and the construction of the Hotel Punta Gorda, the little city thrived on winter seasonal visitors, agricultural trade, and commercial fishing. Fisherman’s Village The first stop was Fisherman’s Village, the thought being shop when you’re not tired and hungry right? Fisherman’s Village is a unique waterfront mall, marina and resort located in a historic area on the Peace River at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor. The complex recently underwent a $10 million renovation and now features over 30 shops, restaurants, and galleries. There is a hotel located on the second floor where most of the rooms are facing the water and very reasonably priced. We had the opportunity to visit a couple of them which were quite lovely and contemporary. I definitely recommend The Suite Hotel for an overnight stay in the area. I especially liked the many boutique and gift

shops featuring resort wear for men and women as well as tropical themes. The food offerings vary from five major restaurants to ice cream and coffee shops. I’m told that the Village Brewhouse has great burgers, but I was saving myself for something else. There are several outdoor bars so it’s easy to find some great drinks and light refreshments.

Downtown

Lunch time took me back to the main drag in Punta Gorda and the Celtic Ray. It’s a great Irish Pub which reminded me of the wonderful pubs we visited in Ireland years ago! I had read about The Celtic Ray Public House with its indoor and outdoor dining and music scene and so much more. I had to try the fish and chips but sadly not the draft Guinness which I knew I could never drink when I had a whole day ahead to explore. The food menu is extensive with curry dishes and other house specialties. The fish and chips were amazing!!

Military Heritage Mu- is an entry fee. Last but not least was a visit to seum The highlight of the visit to Punt Gorda was the Military Heritage Museum. This museum is dedicated to preserving the military history of the United States and honoring the men and women who have served our country. Visitors can see artifacts from various wars, including the Civil War. Amazingly comprehensive! The museum features over 20,000 artifacts, veteran museum guides, flight simulators, graphics, and audiovisual displays. The second floor Flight Ops Simulator Room, Virtual Reality Experience, and Smokeless Laser Gun Range can keep you engaged for hours on end! We especially liked talking to the many vets who were stationed throughout the museum willing to share their knowledge and experiences. This is a must for military history buffs!! The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and there

Alligator Bay Distillery. This is a small batch craft distillery with old fashion copper pots using locally sourced ingredients. Alex, and his brother Ben, started producing rum in 2015 with the aim of producing traditional handcrafted award winning rum and whiskey.

Alex took us on a tour of the 3,000 square foot building and of course ended with free taste testing! What a surprise that I purchased the chocolate infused rum! Think Mudslides! I vowed to return to Punta Gorda to explore more and revisit the museum as you cannot absorb it all in one day and of course do a bit more leisurely shopping!!

The Most Generous Time of the Year It is the time of year where Landings neighbors demonstrate their philanthropic nature and support the mission of the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation (LHCF): To provide gifts for children during the holiday seasons affected by cancer, abuse, or loss of a loved one regardless of race, religion, or educational background. Over the past eight years, the LHCF has grown because of the generosity of Landings residents and those they share the story of the Foundation with. A phone call to Henry Rhodes seven years ago requesting help for a few children that would not otherwise have Christmas, was the beginning of the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation (LHCF). With some help from friends, seven children enjoyed a Christmas that they wouldn’t have had any other way! This grass roots effort to help children with cancer has now grown into an IRS approved 501(c)(3) charity that supports seven organizations with the focus on helping disadvantaged children who might otherwise fall through the cracks.... which is particularly unfortunate during the holiday season. The LHCF supports organizations that either aren’t well funded, small in budget, and provides care/ support that is otherwise limited to families and their children. The

donations we provide change lives. That makes the LCHF unique when it comes to charitable giving, you can know the child you are supporting. Individual donations range from $10 to $ 5,000; in this world, no donation is too small or too big. Valentina, our resident chef, and several Landings neighbors are again hosting a pizza party to benefit LHCF. As supporters of the organization, they are sharing their talents to help raise awareness and funds! The party is again a sell out!!!! How can you help? Use our QR Code to:

- Adopt a child and purchase gifts from their Wish List - Donate funds, we have volunteer shoppers who will purchase gifts for the kid’s Wish Lists, - Drop off check at LRC made out to – “LHCF OR Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation”! - Volunteero Be a “Special Shopper.” o Bring holiday theme blow-ups to line Landings Blvd on December 10 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. to greet children as they come to the Holiday Party o To help at Kids Special Holiday Party (can

you face paint or create a craft or a game or, or, or offer something else?) For more information: - Visit www.LandingsHolidayCharitableFoundation.org - Send an email to: Landings.Holiday. Happiness Is…Friends and Family In this season of thanksgiving, is there anything better to be thankful for than family and great friends? Jerry Williams, owner of Abel’s Ice Cream, has much to be thankful for. “In recent months, members of our family have moved to the area. In addition, we have built incredible friendships here. Never been more grateful to be in this community.” Many of those friendships were born from Jerry’s proactive

lifestyle as an integral member of the Sarasota community. With two businesses, Abel’s and Simon’s Coffee House, Jerry brings his smiling face to the best ice cream and the best breakfast and lunch location in the area. Looking for a fantastic vegan Thanksgiving meal? Pre-order it today from Simon’s. And Abel’s is celebrating the season of Thanksgiving, with featured flavors Carrot Cake (Carrot cake ice cream with fresh walnuts and thick ribbon of cream cheese frosting.) and Stellar Coffee

(Rich coffee ice cream with delicious fudge and mini dark chocolate coffee cups.) Come and celebrate the spirit of joy with us. Abel’s Ice Cream is located at 1886 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota in the South Bridge Plaza. Open Sunday through Thursday from Noon-9:30 pm, and Friday and Saturday from Noon-10 pm. Just for Laughs

Compiled by: Dee Ricapito

Thoughts To Ponder: If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing? If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from? If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons? If the professor from Gilligan’s Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can’t he fix a hole in the boat? Why are New Yorkers depressed? The light at the end of their tunnel is New Jersey. I used to eat natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes. Why not ruin the day for a grouch: “SMILE”

Landings Pickleball

Pickleball has started up again at The Landings. The season opened successfully on Sunday October 1st with about a dozen residents participating, including at least one new face. All were excited to be back after the long summer break. To begin the season, we will be lining court 8 on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Court 7 will be added as our numbers grow with the return of the snowbirds. We have decided to begin with a two day per week schedule but may add an additional afternoon down the road to accommodate those who cannot make the normally scheduled hours. Last year we were on a three day per week schedule. Come and join us. All are welcomed, even if you’ve never held a pickleball paddle in your hand. Remember, everyone is required to wear appropriate tennis or pickleball sneakers designed specifically for a clay court surface.

HARVEST MOON COCKTAIL

Key cocktails is sponsored by Siesta Key Rum, Florida’s finest craft rum producer that uses all natural ingredients in its distillery process. November is the month to give thanks and the Harvest Moon Cocktail is the perfect drink for a Thanksgiving toast to family and friends. Your guests will enjoy this delicious concoction that blends Siesta Key Spiced Rum, apple cider, strawberry, and lemon, bringing together the wondrous flavors of sweet and spice. Allow the magical taste of Siesta Key Spiced Rum to mix with the flavor of apples and think of beautiful red and yellow fall leaves. Take another sip and imagine the soft white sands of Siesta Key as you enjoy the sweet taste of strawberry and lemonade. Give thanks for this celebratory day!

OF THE MONTH Bearded Dragon Pogona vitticeps

Our store has many bearded dragons available in all sizes and age. Perhaps the most popular pet lizard, bearded dragons are originally from the deserts of central Australia. "Bearded" refers to the extendable flap of skin under their chin that turns black when they are stressed, displaying dominance or being territorial. They are usually even-tempered, docile, easy to tame, bond closely with their caretakers and are generally hardy when cared for properly. Typical bearded dragon appearance & behavior • Tolerates handling and interaction with humans • In nature, their skin is tan-colored, but they have been bred for a variety of different colors and patterns • Communicate with each other through gestures such as “arm waving,” in which they lift a front leg and wave it back and forth in submission to another lizard. • They also bob their head as part of their mating ritual or to display dominance • Will spend their day in a hiding spot, basking and climbing.

NOVEMBER 2023 27th State Media, LLC

Travel with Gaye, Rudy, and Treu After traveling for work for over 30 years, we finally reached the magic point of retirement. Now we can travel for fun and see the world when it is convenient to us. Our RV and Jeep Wrangler give us the option to access out of the way places with great photo options. Staying in national and state parks, when possible, allows us to see mountains, lakes, waterfalls, coastlines, and any, and all, special nature. Small towns and villages with historic buildings and churches are very often included in our stops. Our last trip to the Oregon coast took us four months. It was an unbelievable experience to see mountains, waterfalls, and small towns day after day. Having traveled the U.S. in our RV for over ten years to see major sights and hidden gem, off the beaten path, has started the idea how we can keep our memories available for the future. Slide shows seemed to be the right way to keep our memories for the future available.

After creating a few slide shows from our past trips, we realized how much we already forgot about all the great locations we have seen. The next step was a projector and a large screen to enjoy our viewing experience. Now we can watch trips to Artic Alaska and Canadian Rockies as well as our international travels to Africa, New Zealand, Peru, most of Europe, UAE, Antarctica, and Galapagos Islands. The last slide show we created is of our most recent trip that includes photos from Pennsylvania, New York, Canada, Michigan, South Dakota, Colorado, Washington, Iowa, Oregon, and Northern California. We were very excited with our adventures on the Oregon coast. A few of the photos from our most recent trips, printed on canvas on our own equipment, can also be seen. If there is not enough time to answer questions concerning our trips or seeing a slide show, we are glad to follow up with a visit to our condo.
