Evolution of the Swimsuit
Liberation began on the beach--women’s swimwear evolved despite regulations
3
By Philip M. Farrell, MD, PhD

Women’s swimwear evolved during the past century to reflect changes in the social climate. During the late 19th century, women typically wore wool bathing dresses— a beach frock over a slip buttoned up to the neck and covering the length of the legs. Some women also wore stockings to emphasize their modesty. As the Victorian era was ending, liberation began as the billowy, heavy layers of the earlier swimsuits were reduced to a lighter version. VOLUNTEER
As beach vacations became routine, the women’s apparel industry capitalized on the demand for innovative, attractive swimwear. Colorful, impactful swimsuits have become especially popular during spring breaks and the summer season. Stimulated in part by the avant-garde swimwear fashions displayed on supermodels in the annual swimsuit issue published by Sports Illustrated since 1964, the feminine swimwear industry has developed into a $3 billion per year business in the USA alone and $20 billion worldwide. Because of the lack of any prohibitions on beachwear in Sarasota County, Siesta Key is one place where its evolution occurred naturally without any restrictions.

FDEP Secretary Grants Permit for Dredging of Big Sarasota Pass By Rachel Brown Hackney \ SarasotaNewsLeader.com Two days after U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida toured severely eroded areas of South Lido Key Beach, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Secretary Noah Valenstein granted the Joint Coastal Permit that the City of Sarasota and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) need to dredge Big Sarasota Pass to renourish a 1.56mile stretch of South Lido. However, Valenstein did stipulate that the removal of sand from Cut — or borrow area — B of Big Pass and the easternmost 1,200 feet of Cut C may not occur from April to September. He further stipulated that the permit authorize the removal of up to 1.3 million
cubic yards of sand, instead of more than 1.7 million cubic yards, as FDEP would have allowed when it issued its December 2016 Notice of Intent to allow the project to proceed. Valenstein’s June 18 Final Order points out that the city and the USACE “did not model the effects of dredging 1.732 million cubic yards of sand from the ebb shoal and pass. There is insufficient evidence in the record to support an authorization to remove more than 1.3 million cubic yards of sand.” The two new permit conditions were included in the Recommended Order Florida Administrative Law Judge Bram D.E. During that proceeding, the Siesta Key Association (SKA), Save Our Siesta Sand 2 (SOSS2), and three individuals who reside on Siesta Key challenged FDEP’s plans to issue the permit to the city and the USACE. They presented expert witnesses who explained what they have contended will have negative consequences for Siesta Key and Big Pass itself if sand is removed from the waterway and its ebb shoal. He provided basic medical care to grass-skirted women, men, and children in the shade of palm trees and thatched roofs. In 1975, late at night while serving his Emergency Room duties, he received a call from his commanding officer directing him to meet a Flying Tiger Airline flight carrying sick and injured Vietnamese children being evacuated from their war-torn country. He was assisted by a first-class staff: a nurse, a corpsman, and an ambulance driver, who helped triage and move the sickest of these children to the Navy Hospital. |Cosentino Charter amendments only a few signatures short
Siesta Sand took the opportunity to check in with the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Office to find out the status of the Sarasota County Charter petition drive that Siesta resident Mike Cosentino began in July 2016. The petitions Cosentino and supporters have been gathering on behalf of Reopen Beach Road would try to revoke the County Commission’s May 2016 vacation of a 357-foot-long segment of North Beach Road and make it impossible, under the aegis of the Charter, for any future board to abandon similar county-owned waterfront property. The elections office provided these figures on June 20: The total for proposed Amendment 4.1, 13,695; for proposed Amendment 4.2, 13,496. He has made major progress since early April, when the Supervisor of Elections Office reported the number of valid signatures on the petition for proposed Amendment 4.1 was 8,489; he had 8,362 on petitions for proposed Amendment 4.2. Cosentino needs 13,866 valid voter signatures to get the proposed amendments on a ballot. As for the proposed amendments

themselves: The first says the following: “Article III, Section 4.1. Preserve County-Owned Parks, Preserves, Beach and Water Access and Waterfront Vistas. The County shall not sell, and shall retain ownership of, County-owned Parks and Preserves, and shall not vacate or sell County-owned road segments or right of way along or abutting any beach, river, creek, canal, lake, bay, gulf access or waterfront vista. The County shall encourage maximum right of way use for public access and viewing of waterfront vistas. Whenever feasible, the County shall make these areas accessible to mobility impaired persons.” The second says, “Article III, Section 4.2. Siesta Key Beach Road as Public Right of Way. The County shall rescind the vacation of, or re-acquire, Beach Road on Siesta Key as it existed on January 1, 2016, and shall not vacate or sell this County-owned road segment(s) or right of way. The County shall provide maximum right of way use of Beach Road for public access, including vehicular use and viewing of waterfront vistas. The County shall make Beach Road accessible to mobility impaired persons.”
|Fighting the sand SNL/Siesta Sand heard a complaint the first week of June about the sand piled up on the vacated segment of North Beach Road. The 357-foot-long stretch clearly is marked by signage as “Public Access.” However, from the Beach Access 2 perspective on the evening of June 7, the area did appear to this reporter to be part of the beach, not a roadway. An inquiry of county staff about the situation, acknowledged that the same breezes that make sitting on the shore at Access 2 so comfortable contribute to sand on the road. Emergency Services Media Relations Officer Ashley Lusby checked with appropriate staff and provided this response: “The last time the sand was cleared from North Beach road was on June 3, 2018. Additionally, we followed up with our street sweepers on Monday, June 5, and finished cleaning this section of North Beach Road. We will continue
to monitor and clean this area as needed.” According to the street vacation the County Commission approved on a 4-1 vote in May 2016, the affected segment of North Beach Road is open to all users except those in motorized vehicles.
|Sorry, but that is county property A regular beachgoer reported to SNL/Siesta Sand the first week of June that a rope-and-post system had been installed on what appeared to be county right of way at the intersection of Avenida Messina and Beach Road, at Beach Access 2. A photo of the situation was sent to Sarasota County staff, asking for a determination of whether the project indeed was encroaching on public right of way. Yes, it is, Ashley Lusby, the Emergency Service Department’s media relations officer, confirmed in an email. “Staff will be contacting the owner to get it removed,” she wrote on June 12. Lusby, by the way, has been assisting with media requests since county Media Relations Officer Jason Bartolone began working in a similar capacity with the City of Sarasota on April 25. On another note, SNL/Siesta Sand did observe that the grass around the structure at the corner of Avenida Messina and Beach Road appeared to be flourishing.
Earlier this year, Sgt. Jason Mruczek, leader of the Sheriff’s Office substation on the Key, fielded complaints at Siesta Key Association meetings about large numbers of partying young people at Beach Access 2 at night.

An Outstanding Volunteer Nancy Ferraro joined New College in 1966 as their founding registrar. A longtime resident of Sarasota, she had undertaken a career that was challenging and demanding as well as exciting and stimulating. When New College merged with the University of South Florida in 1975, Nancy’s responsibilities increased to include registration and scheduling for USF at Sarasota. For more than three decades she enjoyed serving the students and faculty, many of whom became lifelong friends. Upon retirement in 2000, Nancy turned to volunteer work, offering her organizational skills to non-profits whose missions she supported and felt passionate about. From 2000 -2006 she was on the Board of Pines of Sarasota, serving as Board Chair for part of that time. She knew Pines well as her mother had lived there for many years, receiving the same outstanding care all residents receive no matter their level of need. As she says, “It is amazing that in Sarasota we have a facility like Pines! My Mom started in Assisted Living, then moved to the memory unit and finally to nursing. At every level she was treated with skill, kindness, respect, and dignity.” The mission of the Pines originally was to serve only low-income Sarasota residents. However, as the community became aware of the extraordinary care given at Pines,

other residents wished to live there. If beds were available, no person was turned away. Today Pines serves 276 residents and is funded mostly by private donation. They do receive grants, many of them matching grants. Currently, they have embarked on a multimillion-dollar project to bring muchneeded renovation to their aging campus. Every dollar donated is matched by a $2 donation from the Esther & Harold Mertz Foundation. During the same years, Nancy turned to another passion of hers: animals! Always an animal lover, she became an active volunteer at the Humane Society of Sarasota, working with potential adopters to help them find
their perfect pets. Soon she added to her matchmaking responsibilities the training of new volunteers who wished to work with cats. Inspired by their interest, she began to read up on and study Cat Behavior so that she could pass that knowledge along to others. “I teach Cat Communication,” she says with a grin. During that same period, she also volunteered with Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC), helping check animals into their mobile spay/neuter unit—one of the first free units in Sarasota. Of this experience, Nancy says, “It was so incredibly heartwarming to see these people of such limited means bring in their animals for basic shots and neutering, thus preventing yet another litter of unwanted animals. Both the people who brought in their pets and the vets on the mobile unit were wonderful to work with.” Nancy is passionate about the importance of spay/neuter to reduce the number of unwanted animals and is enthusiastic about ARC’s initiatives. “I am so excited! There are now many different places in Sarasota that offer low-priced vet services, with Rose Durham Cat Care Veterinary Clinic at Cat Depot being a great example. Today more than one feral cat program is available that offers free spay/neuter.” From 2000-2010, Nancy served on the Scholarship Committee for the Gulf Coast
Girl Scout Council. Again, this volunteer opportunity drew on her New College experience. The girls who applied for these scholarships were amazing, volunteering many hours in the community and with their churches while maintaining excellent academic records. Nancy currently volunteers every Monday in Radiology at Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Health Fit facility. She also has worked on special projects for Hospice. The Hospice work is on an “as needed” basis. Today most of Nancy’s volunteering is at Cat Depot, where she offers orientation programs for prospective volunteers and assists the volunteer coordinator in many volunteer-oriented activities, often working from home maintaining the volunteer database on a complex computer program, Volgistics. Again, this ties in perfectly with her professional skills, for she ran orientations at New College for 35 years! Nancy also delights in teaching Cat Communication to kids who wish to volunteer and to the kids in the summer “Critter Camps.” Says Nancy, “This is so much fun. It provides the opportunity to teach kids about compassion and kindness to animals as well as how to handle them. It also teaches the importance of spay/neuter, which is so rewarding!” Continued on page 39

The Sarasota Police Department sent out an alert via Twitter that Siesta Drive was closed in the 800 block because of a single-vehicle crash with serious injuries. Vehicles were being re-routed onto Norsota Way. “We’re asking you please avoid the area and find an alternate route,” the Twitter alert added. Genevieve Judge, the public information officer for the Sarasota Police Department (SPD), told SNL/ Siesta Sand via email that only one person — the male driver — was in the vehicle, which hit a Florida Power & Light Co. She did not have his age when she responded for the request for information. “Officers didn’t clear the road until after 10am and then FPL worked to replace the pole,” she added. A second Twitter alert on June 14, which reported that Siesta Drive had reopened to traffic, also noted that an FPL crew would be working throughout the day to install a new pole. One driver caught up in the crush of diverted vehicles told SNL/Siesta Sand that Norsota Way proved a problematic detour because of landscaping companies’ equipment and trucks blocking sections of the road. Drivers had to play a form of motorized hopscotch to get around them.
Drowning reported A 57-year-old man apparently drowned on May 18 offshore of
Beach Access 2, just a day before he was due to return home to St. Louis. The victim was Robert C. Kannady, a Sheriff’s Office report said. He and several members of his family — also from Missouri — had been on vacation on the Key that week, the report noted. Continued on page 19

Happiness is…Doing Good “Our team is doing things right.” Jerry Williams, owner of Abel’s Ice Cream, pointed to the email confirmation of the company’s most recent accolade: Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame Inductee. This award is reserved for those outstanding businesses that receive the Certificate of Excellence five years in a row. Jerry credits his amazing staff and, most importantly, his valued customers for the honor. “Every person that walks through that door deserves fantastic ice cream and a clean inviting atmosphere provided by a staff that is genuinely glad to see them. From day one, providing both of those things has been our primary objective.” Jerry left his career in restaurant management to own and operate Abel’s. That doesn’t mean he left behind the lessons. Ray Kroc, founder of McDonalds, famously stated two pieces of advice that Jerry continues to embrace today. 1) You’re only as good as the people you hire. And 2) The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves. “We are humbled and honored that our customers consistently take the time to rate us on Trip Advisor,” Jerry added. “More and more people are looking to the internet for their recommendations. New County Zoning District to Facilitate Improvements at Siesta Key Palms Hotel By Rachel Brown Hackney Altogether, it took only seven-and-a-half minutes on June 13 for the Sarasota County Commission to unanimously approve the implementation of a new zoning district and then agree to allow the owners of property on Stickney Point Road to make use of that district to rehabilitate the Siesta Key Palms Hotel. During the public hearing, Chair Nancy Detert asked a few questions about the zoning district, which has been crafted to allow the redevelopment of older hotels and motels. One member of the public also had a question, though it related to traffic patterns. Detert was absent because of illness when her colleagues heard a staff report during their first public hearing on the proposed new district. Held on May 22, the hearing also focused on developer Henry Rodriguez’s plans to preserve what he called the “chic, mid-century experience” for his guests at his 14-unit hotel. Robert “Bo” Medred, president of Genesis Planning & Development in Bradenton — who has worked on the project on behalf of Rodriguez — explained to Detert on June 13 that Rodriguez’s approximately 1-acre site is split into two zoning districts: Office, Professional and Institutional (OPI), and Residential Multi-Family 4. The latter allows up to 18 units per acre. Neither would allow Rodriguez to redevelop the property as he desired, Medred continued, and Rodriguez did not want to apply to have the parcel rezoned to a commercial designation. After talking at length with county staff, Medred explained, the decision was made to propose a new zoning district: Boutique Resort Redevelopment/Planned Development — BRR/PD. “It was to account for those transient accommodations properties that were ripe for redevelopment” but whose zoning would hinder the transformation, Medred added. Because of setback, buffer, and
other requirements implemented in their zoning districts since their construction, he explained, they have ended up being nonconforming properties. Only about eight or nine hotels or motels in the entire county would qualify for the BRR/ PD designation, he said. If any of the other owners wished to redevelop those properties, he continued, they also would have to request County Commission approval. On May 22 — during the first public hearing on the proposed new zoning district — Medred also explained that the BRR/PD district could not be used on the county’s barrier islands. The maximum height of buildings would be 35 feet, he noted, and the maximum number of rooms allowed would be 75. Furthermore, an applicant would have to demonstrate that the redevelopment would be compatible with neighboring land uses before gaining County Commission approval for the rezoning, Medred told Detert on June 13. “You probably won me on that,” she responded. Referring to Rodriguez’s proposal for further changes to the Siesta Key Palms Hotel property, Detert added, “It’s not out of the box; it’s not crazy; it’s compatible.” Her concern, she said, had been focused on the proposal for the new zoning district.
Other facets of the proposal During his May 22 presentation, County Planner Kirk Crane explained that the Siesta Key Palms Hotel has six multi-family units and eight hotel/motel units, Crane continued. The southern boundary of the property is Dawn Street, he noted, while other access points are on Avenue B. Rodriguez wants to build one new 18-unit, three-story structure, Crane told the board, but it would not exceed 35 feet. After that has been completed, he said, Rodriguez
plans to remove one of the two multi-family structures on the property and put in a new spa and pool. The site plan also calls for 30 parking spaces, along with a total of 30 units. Furthermore, Crane said, Rodriguez plans to eliminate the current five access points and create a new entrance from Avenue B. After Crane concluded his remarks, Rodriguez addressed the commissioners, telling them that he and his wife bought the hotel property in 2016. The travel industry nationwide has put a focus on rehabilitating older properties, he pointed out. On The Today Show the previous week, he continued, the editor of Travel + Leisure magazine was talking about destinations and mentioned Sarasota. The only hotel she discussed was his, he added. “I had nothing to do with this,” he added laughingly. “So we’re actually full this weekend.” The Siesta Key Palms Hotel also has held the No. 1 or No. 2 spot among 52 Sarasota accommodations on TripAdvisor, he pointed out. “It consistently ranks above the RitzCarlton in downtown Sarasota.”
Public and board support During the May 22 public hearing, three adjacent property owners endorsed Rodriguez’s plans for the hotel. “Mr. Rodriguez has just been a godsend,” Bernadette Tirpsira told the commissioners. “His existing vacationers are polite and quiet,” she added. “He has stopped noisy parties, constant flow of traffic in and out at all hours and, especially, rat infestation.” Margot Linn said that before Rodriguez
bought the property, it was the scene of prostitution and drug dealing. “Almost everybody I know is in favor of his project.” After the public hearing, Commissioner Charles Hines made the motions to approve both the creation of the new zoning district and to approve the rezoning of Rodriguez’s property to that district. Commissioner Alan Maio seconded it. The motion passed 4-0, with Commissioner Michael Moran absent because of a death in the family. On May 22, Maio referenced the speakers’ approbation for Rodriguez’s plans, including Tirpsira’s comment that Rodriguez has been a “godsend” to the neighborhood. “Nothing else needs to be said,” Maio said. “I’ve just never seen, to-date, such a rehab” as Rodriguez already has achieved on the site, Moran added that day. He characterized the hotel atmosphere as “that Old Florida feel,” noting that he and his wife had toured the property. “I think the lesson here is that the scale is completely appropriate for this area,” Commissioner Paul Caragiulo pointed out.

Once again, red tide has been plaguing beachgoers on Sarasota County’s shoreline, including Siesta Public Beach, Mote Marine Laboratory and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have reported. In its June 15 update, the FWC noted that the Florida red tide organism, Karenia brevis, continued to persist in Southwest Florida. However, as of that day, the report said, concentrations in 30 samples collected in Sarasota County showed very low to medium levels of the organism. Over the previous week, the report continued, “fish kills were reported in Southwest Florida in Sarasota County (Crescent Beach, Lido Key, Manasota Beach, New Pass,
Nokomis Beach, Siesta Key, Venice Beach),” as well as Charlotte County and Lee County. Respiratory irritation was documented on Siesta from June 8 through June 15, the report added. The FWC also explained, “Red tide is a naturallyoccurring microscopic alga that has been documented along Florida’s Gulf Coast since the 1840’s and occurs nearly every year. Blooms, or higher-than-normal concentrations, of the Florida red tide alga, Karenia brevis, frequently occur in the Gulf of Mexico. Red tide begins in the Gulf of Mexico 10 to 40 miles offshore and can be transported inshore by winds and currents.” Mote’s June 15 Beach Conditions report at 10:40 a.m.
noted wind out of the northeast at 3.5 mph, with calm surf. Respiratory irritation was moderate, the report added, and some dead fish were located on the Siesta Public Beach. Mote’s Beach Conditions reports may be found at https://visitbeaches.org. Two days earlier — in the afternoon of June 13 — the respiratory irritation level on Siesta was noted to be “Slight.” Yet, just after 9:30 a.m. the previous day — June 12 — the Mote report for Siesta noted an “Intense” respiratory irritation level and a “Heavy” amount of dead fish. The wind recorded on the beach was 3.72 mph out of the west at that time.

Paving for Part of Turtle Beach Parking Lot For years, residents who live near Turtle Beach Park have complained about the dust from the parking lot. During comments to the County Commission on Dec. 14, 2016, a Sunrise Cove resident, Ed Schmidt, represented about 155 owners in the condominium complex located at 8877 Midnight Pass Road, he said, when he asked for improvements. The older parking lot in the park, he pointed out, “has been there for 40 years, and the construction crew used broken shell as a matrix over there.” Traffic has crushed that shell into a powder in the ensuing years, Schmidt continued. “And that powder blows around the property, and then when it rains, it becomes a soupy mess, and we have slip hazards on the pavement there.” Schmidt told the board that Sunrise Cove residents have complained about the situation for a long time “and have gotten no response.” A couple who lives in Sunrise Cove emailed county staff to complain, as well, that year, and they received a response from Shawn Yeager, the Beaches & Water Access Division manager in the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department. In a Dec. 2, 2016 email, Yeager agreed with a point the writers had made — that the parking lot with the shell “is the only option for large vehicles to turn around …” He added that it has been used by buses and vehicles of similar size “for many years.” Yeager continued, “The increased dust is likely a result of two factors. First, we are experiencing an unusually dry autumn this year. Second, there has been an increase in the truck traffic using the parking lot due to the Turtle Beach renovation project. The good news is that both of these factors are likely temporary in nature. The construction project will soon be completed, which will reduce the traffic to its normal volume, and once we get through this dry season we anticipate the dust settling and the problem being resolved. Your concern has been reviewed by our environmental specialists
and there is no indication the dust poses a health hazard but we will certainly monitor the area.” Yeager was referring to county improvements at Turtle Beach Park. The rain “on this surface turns the powder into a slippery slurry which encroaches on … the sidewalk & pavement,” the couple responded, noting their dissatisfaction with his explanation.
Finally, help arrived During their regular meeting on May 22, the county commissioners unanimously approved the spending of $157,206 to pave one of the remaining shell areas of the parking lot. That section is located in the northeast corner of the park, fronting Midnight Pass Road and the park’s large picnic pavilion. “Vehicles, delivery trucks, and school buses frequently use this parking lot area to turn around on Midnight Pass Road,” a May 22 staff memo noted. (The park

is near the southernmost part of the Key.) Additionally, the Siesta Key Breeze open-air trolley stops approximately every 20 minutes in that parking area as it travels between Turtle Beach Park and Morton’s Siesta Market in Siesta Village. The memo also noted that, when it rains, the trolleys and other vehicles track shell onto Midnight Pass Road and the adjoining sidewalk. The project entails the widening and pavement of the parking lot’s entries; paving the travel way; paving the Americans with Disabilities Act parking space; improvements to the portions of the affected sidewalks along Midnight Pass Road; and the installation of a stormwater retention area “to divert water from where it typically stands at the southernmost entry to the parking area.” As for the funding: $133,826 will come out of penny sales tax revenue remaining from the allocations for the improvements both to Turtle Beach Park and Siesta Public Beach, the memo noted. The remaining $23,380 will come from the Tourist Development Tax revenue set aside for projects and events, the memo explained. In 2006, the memo said, the Turtle Beach Park project was added to the county’s Capital Improvement Program. It entailed
the remodeling of the community center; replacement of the docks; renovation of the accessible dune walkover; installation of a new dock; paving one part of the parking lot; landscaping; and construction of sidewalks, a new playground and a canoe/kayak launch; and the addition of a wash-down rack for water vessels. The project was completed in December 2016, the memo pointed out. The Siesta Public Beach Park improvements were finished in early 2016. The county’s Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department staff “has been corresponding with members of the Sunrise Cove Condominiums concerning their complaint and the proposed solution,” the memo noted. Commissioner Alan Maio made the motion to approve the project, and Commissioner Paul Caragiulo seconded it. “This is on south Siesta,” Maio explained to his colleagues. “It’s been a while coming. We’ve responded to requests.” The reason for the delay, he continued, was the need “to come up with a way” to deal with part of the parking lot without “cannibalizing it with a lot of stormwater retention ponds, and this is a great solution.” “For $157,000, all we’re getting is pavement for our trolley to turn around,” Chair Nancy Detert added, “and to create a lot less dust for local residents. We’re not paving the entire shell lot.”

Through the Eyes of a Veteran Next came the Boat People. After two weeks at sea with no toilet facilities, a massive admission of pediatric cases was inevitable. Dr. Golden and his two fellow pediatricians set up an open ward at the hospital, with beds lining both walls and a row of beds in the middle. Dehydrated kids would receive glucose and electrolytes through IV’s that were hanging by a nail. With 20-40 admissions per day, hospital beds had to be shared. Mattresses were placed at each end of the bed and raised in the middle. Family members of each patient slept on the floor beneath every bed. As refugees flooded in by the thousands, the newborn deliveries rose five-fold from 30 to 150 births per month. The Navy ordered every incubator it could find transported to Guam from naval facilities all over the world. Bassinettes were placed on top of incubators. It was crowded beyond belief, but Dr. Golden and his crew did an amazing job caring for these children and their families; amazingly, only two children died— one with diphtheria and one of Dr. Golden’s patients with dengue fever. He still vividly remembers this patient. After serving two years as Staff Pediatrician at the Naval Hospital in Guam, Dr. Golden left for Fitzsimons Army Medical Center near Denver for his fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. There he spent two years before being assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he served as Director of the Newborn Branch. Still in the Navy, he was assigned to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) achieving the academic rank of Associate Professor. At USUHS he established the medical curriculum for Neonatology, a research laboratory for perinatal medicine, and the still extant Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship program. A man of enormous energy, he not only taught medical students but had the additional duty of being an Assistant Commandant of Students. Many of his students were interested in learning to jump out of an airplane. So—at the age of 35— Dr. Golden went right along with them. They were trained as paratroopers and received their Army jump wings at Ft. Benning, Ga. Their trainers were called “Black Hats,” famed for sending their trainees on 8-mile runs wearing combat boots. During these runs, a Black Hat would often hand then Commander Golden a bag of bricks which he would run with until other members of the class would race up to and take them. It was a test of comradery.

Continued from cover story
Upon returning to USUHS, he completed additional parachute jumps at Marine Corps Base Quantico and received his gold Navy and Marine Corps Parachutist Badge. He also completed training and received the Army’s Expert Field Medical Badge—considered the most difficult and prestigious Army special skill badge to earn. The requirement for this badge includes demonstrated expertise in patient triage, transport, chemical warfare casualty care, and land navigation skills— including a very arduous nighttime compass course with M-16s and combat gear. After ten years of active duty, Dr. Golden entered the Navy Reserves and moved to New Jersey, where he became Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University. The Navy allowed then Commander Golden to transfer to the Army Reserves, which was more compatible with his specialty and enabled him to continue to work with medical students from USUHS. However after a year, Dr. Golden, now an Army Colonel, received a call from the New Jersey Army National Guard (NJARNG) State Surgeon asking him to become Division Surgeon of the 50th Armored Division, NJARNG. Dr. Golden accepted this position which he held for 10 years. During this time, the Army wanted all Division Surgeons to become qualified as Flight Surgeons and he completed his Flight Surgeon training at Ft. Rucker, AL in 1992. The Army Medical Department also recognized and highly honored Dr. Golden and his 50th AD medical staff in allowing them to conduct Expert Field Medical Badge training and testing. After 10 years of civilian life, Dr. Golden missed serving members of our uniformed services and their families. Only the Air Force had one position available in his medical field at that time; he was interviewed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA and in 1995 was released from the Army National Guard. He entered the Air Force with an initial assignment as Director of Neonatology at David Grant USAF Medical Center (DGMC). He completed Air War College while at Travis AFB and was subsequently appointed to be Chief of the Medical Staff of DGMC—responsible for the medical care and medical staff activities of the Air Force’s second largest medical facility serving over 400,000 beneficiaries. While at DGMC he also completed USAF Flight Surgeon training and hyperbaric medicine training—and provided expert clinical care in these medical subspecialty areas as well as Neonatology. In addition to these professional activities, Col Golden was Executive Director of the Travis AFB

His medals include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the NavyMarine Corps Overseas Service Medal. Colonel Golden’s bio is lengthy and stellar. He has served on almost two dozen civic boards including the New Jersey Children Relief Fund Commission, the
March of Dimes, and the YMCA, to name but a few. He has received a myriad of academic awards and honors, published dozens of articles, chapters, and abstracts, and has given a multitude of presentations at national meetings. Since 2007, he has served as Enterprise Medical Director for Neonatal Utilization Management at Anthem Corporation. Stephen Golden and his wife, Karen, moved to The Landings four years ago, where they are happily ensconced in a treehouse.

Took my wife here for her 40th birthday. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable but they weren’t pretentious like most upscale restaurants. Casual yet classy atmosphere, was great after a day at the beach. They made our celebration one to remember and had every little detail figured out. Best food on Siesta Key Great dinner! Everything was excellent: house salad, lobster cargo, filet, grouper and the brussel sprouts side. Service was knowledgeable and attentive. The manager came over to check in on us. Could not ask for a better experience. If you’re looking for higher end dining on siesta key, Summer House is a must. Fantastic dinner! I greatly enjoyed my first meal at Summer House. The food and service were outstanding. Amanda was our server. We each had a steak (rib eye and filet) and shared an appetizer and vegetables. The crab cake appetizer was incredible! We’ll definitely be back. Thank you!

Best restaurant where we ate on Siesta Key vacation If you’re looking for a relaxing evening of fine dining with excellent food and stellar service on Siesta Key, Summer House is a restaurant to choose. Don’t eat too much bread or entrée. Save room for a piece of their out-of-this-world chocolate cake. Do Not Miss My wife and I celebrated our 51st anniversary there tonight. From the rose pedals and anniversary card on the table when we arrived made the evening outstanding. In addition our waitress Delores made us have a very memorable evening. I must also say the food was perfect and as a final nice touch the chef gave us a special dessert. I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends. Welcome back son My son just returned from Iraq after 10 months, commanding his company for our country. Thought a good steak, bottle of Orin Swift, surrounded by friendly and welcoming people was in order. Summer House delivered! Staff, across the board was attentive and thorough. Food was great and prepared as ordered. The enthusiasm of our server made the experience that much better. No. 1 -- No question about it! I was vising Mom on our birthday, same as I have been doing in Sarasota for over twenty years. What a happy discovery this was! I was walking by during the day and noticed “this new restaurant.” The proprietor (a handsome and extremely affable young man) welcomed me to stop in and have a look. He told me that the restaurant was only three months old. I walked around and was immediately taken by the 10,000 gallon giant fish tank. (I’m a scuba diver so I was thrilled with this.) The place is stunningly neat, clean, and immaculate. That alone makes you want to eat here. I came back for dinner the same night with Mom. I had oysters on the half shell then a delicious filet. Two drinks suited me fine with dinner, not too strong, not too light. The service was outstanding and the food was the best you’ll find in Sarasota, an believe me, I’m Mr. Picky -- if the food, service, and atmosphere ain’t good I’ll be the first person to make my complaints known. No complaints about this place, just the highest compliments I can offer. A British couple were checking this place out the next day, and I told them, “This is it. Have dinner here. You won’t regret it.” They said, “Right, thanks for the tip. Will do. Jolly nice of you, I say.” Summer House Siesta Key Steak and Seafood, located at 149 Avenida Messina, is open Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 10 pm and until 11 pm on weekends. |Casey Key couple wins Class II Emergency Variance to stabilize deteriorating cabana on the beach while they seek permanent solution to the situation It took just under 24 minutes on June 12 for the Sarasota County Commission to grant a Class II Emergency Variance to a Casey Key couple so they could stabilize a cabana at risk of becoming debris on the shoreline. Howard Berna, the county’s environmental permitting manager, told the board members that the petition was only the third for such a variance that staff ever had brought before the County Commission for approval. Commissioner Charles Hines noted at the conclusion of the public hearing that the couple — David and Sara Evans — were able to get a county variance for sandbags first through an administrative process. Then staff was able to schedule David Evans’ appearance on the petition for the Class II variance when the determination was made that needed to be the next step. Therefore, it appeared to him, Hines said, based on the dates in

the materials staff had provided the board, that the process had flowed fairly quickly. Addressing Evans, Hines continued, “This is what I hope to see for other folks that are going through situations like you.” Berna pointed out that the county’s Coastal Setback Ordinance — originally adopted in 1979 — allows the commissioners to grant a Class II Emergency Variance as a temporary measure to protect shoreline property. In this case, Berna explained, erosion “exacerbated by a fairly strong cold front that occurred late in March,” damaged the cabana on the Gulf of Mexico side of the property at 2100 Casey Key Road. That cold front caused more than 10 feet of dune erosion, Berna wrote in a June 12 memo to the board. “Waves washed out most of the sand underneath the concrete deck of the … cabana structure, exposing a slab foundation,” he added in the memo. The cabana dates to the 1970s, the memo said; it is completely seaward of the county’s Gulf Beach Setback Line (GBSL). The latter is the figurative “line in the sand” established to preserve dunes and vegetation and thereby protect landward property from serious storm damage. Evans told the commissioners that he and his wife bought the property in April 2006. “We had no clue that the slab was there, but we were happy to see it …” The couple experienced two weeks of “high northwest winds,” Evans pointed out, at the same time in March when the Northeastern United States was enduring a series of “nor’easters.” At times, he said, the wind speed at his Casey Key home was in excess of 30 mph. Berna noted that the Evanses had applied for a Class I Emergency Variance to install sandbags on their property; that was granted on April 2, according to Berna’s memo. On May 18, the memo said, they applied for the Class II Emergency Variance so they could install 13 underpinnings “to reinforce the nonconforming slab foundation of the existing cabana structure.”
Those underpinnings “would be augered in under the slab” to support the foundation, Berna told the board. A staff stipulation calls for the project to be completed within a year, which Berna said he thought was possible, even with the necessary state permitting process. The variance would be valid for three years, he added, while the Evanses “look for alternative solutions.” If the underpinnings are in place and further damage ensues, Berna pointed out, staff would require the removal of the structure. “I don’t mind granting someone an emergency petition if their building looks like it’s going to fall into the Gulf,” Chair Nancy Detert responded. However, she added, approving subsequent emergency measures for a specific situation was not a sound policy. “Eventually, you’re going to have to face the fact that it’s an act of God that your cabana not be there anymore.” “The sandbags have resisted some erosion events,” Evans told the board. “I hope they will preserve the bluff for a long period of time.” Yet, though the sandbags have given him and his wife some sense of security when they are near the cabana, he added, “they really do nothing to place an upward force on the cabana deck as the foundation did, so it’s a risky situation.”
The stabilization project, he continued, would “not interfere with access along the beach,” nor would it involve the destruction of vegetation. “The risk of not taking this proposed action,” Evans said, “is a deck failure could occur at any time.” Neighbors’ cabanas to the north had collapsed, he pointed out. “One night, there was a loud explosion when one cabana tipped over.” “There’s a critical danger to beachgoers,” he added, as people walk the shoreline regularly in that area and a number of them have dogs with them that like to sniff around structures. An even greater risk exists, Evans told the board. “Children may find it interesting to go stand on a sandbag to see how soft it is.” If he is unable to have the underpinnings installed, Evans
added, the result could be “a debris field on the beach” if another storm occurs. Four of his neighbors had offered their support for the project, he said. No member of the public addressed the board. After Detert closed the public hearing, Commissioner Alan Maio made the motion to approve the variance; Commissioner Hines seconded it. Commissioner Michael Moran was absent because of a death in his family, so the vote was 4-0. Chair Detert pointed out that the county does have staff available to help the public, but the public often is not aware of that. Made in Rome Organic Gelato So what’s the latest combination of flavors coming out of Made In Rome Organic Gelato? Or should I say, the latest look? No, this isn’t licorice or an anise flavored gelato. This black as coal gelato is one of the newest flavors coming out of this gelateria and is simply called Activated Charcoal gelato. The activated charcoal used in their gelato though isn’t made with coal charcoal, instead an organic coconut ash is used to give this gelato flavor its deep, dark, rich color and provides the same detoxifying properties as activated charcoal. In fact, coconut ash, comprised of the charred and processed remains of coconut shells, is a form of activated charcoal used in many popular cleanses. Some claims have been made that it works similar to a water filter for your body. Okay, so since it’s made from coconut wouldn’t it also taste like coconut? On the contrary, according to owner Diane TheronCuna, the coconut ash doesn’t have much of a flavor so the clean, organic ingredients used such as vanilla, in this case, will shine through. Theron-Cuna said, “My husband’s family in Italy has been selling a lot of this product so we wanted to make sure our customers could enjoy it as well.” This charcoal-colored sweet treat has become a trend in the past couple of years and according to certified doctor of natural medicine, doctor of chiropractic and clinical nutritionist, Dr. Josh Axe, it does have a variety of proposed benefits ranging from lowering cholesterol to whitening teeth and curing hangovers. One blogger, amusedblog.com posted, “Growing up in a holistic household, I can tell you that black coconut ash is as old as the hills. It’s also known as “activated charcoal,” and it saved me from many a hangover
15
in college. After a night of drinking I would take 1-2 capsules with a large glass of water, and would wake up well slept and ready for the day without a headache in sight. It is a lifesaver should you have food poisoning: activated charcoal is a detoxifying and absorbing product - meaning it can assist in the removal of toxins and heavy metals from your stomach and bloodstream. It also works on the surface of your skin: if you get a bug bite or sting, simply create a charcoal paste by mixing the product with a little bit of water, and place over the bite.” Of course, there are plenty of other flavors to try and the staff at Made In Rome Organic Gelato generously provides samples of their house made gelato where a new flavor is produced every 15 minutes, and as their name implies, all ingredients used are organic. No hydrogenated fats or colorants, or preservatives are ever used. Vegan and sugar-free options are available from their freshly-made 30 flavor selection. They also offer shakes and Italian espresso served straight or affogato al caffe; a double shot of espresso topped with a scoop of gelato…any flavor. Their affogato al caffe continues to be a favorite. Says Theron-Cuna, “People go crazy for this!” Theron-Cuna and husband, Massimo enjoy showing off the process used to construct their gelato. They invite you to watch the process as they create a batch of their sinfully delicious gelato. Made In Rome Organic Gelato is located at 5204 Ocean Blvd., in the Siesta Key Village. Their hours are 11:00 am to 11:00 pm daily. (941) 960-5344, www.madeinromegelato.com Advertorial

Buzzfeed Names Fresh Catch Top New Florida Restaurant to Try in 2018
FC Sarasota Soccer Club Player Receives Andrew Monroe Scholarship
According to a list published on the popular website Buzzfeed.com, Fresh Catch is the top new restaurant diners should check out in Florida in 2018. Data focusing on new restaurants that opened during the past year from the restaurant-review site Yelp.com was used to compile the list. Only one restaurant was chosen from each state, adding to the impressive recognition this small restaurant is receiving. Fresh Catch’s father/son duo, Bob and Devon Provost, have a serious passion for seafood which started way back when the family lived in the Boston area. Their simply prepared, neverfried, never-frozen dishes are paired with a variety of simple sauces that serve to complement, so the freshness of the seafood shines. Your fish/seafood selection goes from the case onto the grill. Prepared grilled or blackened, topped with lemon and butter, Pico de Gallo, or tropical salsa. Served with a fresh ear of corn on the cob, and baby roasted potatoes. Soups, salads, sandwiches, and steam pots round out the menu. If room permits, be sure to order a slice of their homemade key lime pie. Bob’s wife, Debra, makes the key lime pie, using freshly whipped cream. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of beers and wines. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill, located at 7119 S. Tamiami Trail, just south of Stickney Point Road in the Buccaneer Plaza, is a casual restaurant/market with indoor and outdoor seating for close to 30.

The Provost Family Wishes Everyone a Happy 4th of July
The Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship Fund hosted a 5K on January 7th on beautiful Siesta Beach. Funds generated from the 5K awarded scholarships to several area athletes from High School, JROTC and Soccer Clubs. The scholarship recipient for FC Sarasota Soccer Club was Alexandra Boudreau. Alexandra plans to attend Florida State University and double major in psychology and criminology. Following Monroe’s death in a 2011 car crash, the Monroe family set up the scholarship fund in his memory to assist soccer athletes for a legacy of high education. An education he was unable to complete. To qualify, each applicant submitted an essay explaining how they emulate the traits and characteristics that defined Monroe.

Here’s what more patrons are saying about the restaurant on line: Yelp review: I see why this place is all five stars. Amazing find, tucked away in a nondescript strip mall adds to its local, simple vibe. Best seafood I have had in a long time. Service made it feel like we were part of the family, four happy diners tonight. If you read this post, stop searching and start eating. Seriously do not pass up this little gem. “If you love delicious seafood prepared flawlessly, this is the place for you. Everything is cooked to highlight the high quality, pulled fresh from the gulf.” —Yelper Scott B. “Our favorite!! Best fresh fish and crab claws!!! The fish list is changing daily. The Key lime pie is the best there is.” —Yelper George C. Tried this place last night on a whim and it did not disappoint! Everything from the staff, to the menu, to the meal itself was perfection. It’s a small place and luckily we’d come in between dinner rushes and got a table right away. Within 10 mins the place was full again. The wait staff was smiling and helpful. We shared stone crab soup to start with a couple of ice cold beers, tons of crab in the soup and excellent flavor. For our meals we got blackened tripletail and snow crab claws. Each came with a side of roasted potatoes. I can’t say enough about how fresh and delicious the entire meal was. We will be back!

The Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship Fund hosted a 5K on January 7th. Funds generated from the 5K awarded $3, 000 in scholarships to three recipients during the Riverview High School Soccer Awards ceremony March 19, at the Riverview High School Performing Arts Building. The three recipients were as follows: Zachary Sharek, Veronica McCurdy, and Eiko McCurdy. Following Monroe’s death in a 2011 car crash, the Monroe family set up the scholarship fund in his memory to assist RHS soccer athletes for a legacy of high education. An education he was unable to complete. To qualify, each applicant submitted an essay explaining how they emulate the traits and characteristics that defined Monroe.

Another Land Sale in the Village Ocean Boulevard was sold for $600,000 to Judy A. Fryer of Sarasota, county Property Appraiser’s Office records show. Fryer also owns the site of the Old Salty Dog, which she bought in June 1992, the Property Appraiser’s Office records say. The seller of the 5027 Ocean Blvd. parcel was the Fledging Point Trust. The previous record for that land on the Property Appraiser’s Office website listed John A. Ericson as trustee. A search of the records of the Sarasota County Clerk of Court and County Comptroller found that the death certificate for John A. Ericson was recorded on May 22, the same date as the property transaction. The last establishment to open in the 5027 Ocean Blvd. space — a business that featured wine tastings — closed during the recession. Last year, the Property Appraiser’s Office records say, the market value of the property was $428,400. The land area is 5,000 square feet, with the building dating to 1957. Since November 2017, online county permitting records note, three inquiries were made regarding the zoning and parking regulations for the site. One, submitted on Jan. 4, was from a real estate agent who wanted to know what could be built on the site, that record says. On Jan. 31, Barry C. Seidel of American Property
Group in Sarasota had listed the property for rent at a rate of $35.42 for a total of 1,360 square feet. People who paid close attention to the “For Sale” sign on the parcel have told the newspaper that it specified no restaurant could go into the space. However, when a question was posed about uses of the property to county staff, Mary Beth Humphreys, customer service manager in the Planning and Development Services Department, responded that the property is zoned Commercial General, and a restaurant is an approved use in that zoning district. “The County doesn’t have any stipulation about a restaurant on this parcel,” Humphreys added.
Speaking of Village property … The preliminary taxable property values released by the Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s Office in late May show the Siesta Village Public Improvement District’s value is up 7.29%, compared to the certified value last year. The preliminary report puts the total taxable value for this year at $72,814,878. The final property values will be released by July 1, according to state law, as local governments are at work on their budgets for the next fiscal year. The revenue from the special tax the property owners in the Public Improvement District pay is used for upkeep in Siesta Village.

Extraordinary Bloom Season for the Cereus Photos submitted by Michael Cosentino Island resident Mike Cosentino, an avid fan of the cereus, anticipated the 80+ blooms all coming to life during a single evening recently. He was able to capture a sampling of this glorious sight
The night of its blooming, the bud will begin to open around 9 or 10 pm. It’s worth the wait since they will literally open before your eyes These nocturnal bloomers may look unsightly and menacing during the day when they are not in bloom with their thin cacti stems encroaching on the tree trunks of a hosting palm, but the beauty they provide for that brief moment absolves them of their unappealing appearance for the remainder of the year

Truth in Advertising? “Willing to Work,” “God-Bless,” “Disabled Vet,” “Anything Will Help.” We’ve all seen the predictable signs held up by homeless folks looking for handouts as they work the major intersections around town. So it was a welcome surprise to see a break from the ordinary in a message displayed by the guy working the Fruitville Road/North Washington Boulevard intersection one day last week just as folks were getting off work. It read: “Why Lie? I Need a Beer!” Don Draper couldn’t have distinguished himself any better from the desultory, lockstep messaging of his Madison Avenue cohorts than this guy did with his refreshingly honest sign last week. He could probably make a fortune as a consultant helping his brethren sharpen their marketing skills.
Venice on Major Win Streak Remember President Trump saying on the campaign trail that if he won the election there would be so much winning we’d all get tired of it? Well, if such a thing is possible, folks in Venice may be able to describe the experience for the rest of us. First, the Venice High Indians football squad won a state championship last fall. Then one of the school’s alum, Trey Burton, tossed a touchdown pass for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl and later returned home to share the experience with a public appearance in his hometown. Then this spring Venice High added two more trophies to their display case, with state championships in volleyball and baseball. There was a bump in the road recently when – as reported in this space last month – football Coach John Peacock was removed from his head-coaching position over a Facebook post he ‘liked.’ That post commented on the complexion of a rival coach, Curt Bradley of Braden River High School. Bradley is multi-racial and some saw the post coach Peacock liked as racially insensitive, including coach Bradley, who called out his rival’s behavior in a public letter on the matter. Peacock responded by saying he had no idea Bradley was multiracial and no apology was forthcoming in a letter he wrote in response to Bradley’s. In it, he went on offense by saying this: “I’m appalled at Coach Bradley’s desperate attempt to exploit today’s racial tension to distract from the disgrace he has brought to his program. This has happened because I was the coach that finally stood up and exposed Coach Bradley for cheating in order to protect the integrity of high school football. I knew this could be an outcome of that decision, and I was willing to accept that. As sad and unfortunate as it is, it was the right thing to do and I would do it again.” The ‘cheating’ mentioned by Peacock reportedly concerned nonsanctioned practices conducted by the Braden River coach before last year’s football season got underway. What a mess. But cooler heads eventually prevailed. Peacock did finally offer up a public apology and members of the community – including at least one high profile business sponsor of the Venice football program – rallied in support of his reinstatement. Principal Eric Jackson reconsidered his original decision, and Coach Peacock will return to the Venice gridiron this fall, albeit after serving a three game suspension.

Bumper Sticker of the Day... Control Your Kids...Not My Guns. Which got me thinking... It seems obvious, but when I was growing up we of course had schools (I’m not that old, after all). We also had guns... just as many on a per capita basis as we have today. What we didn’t have: monthly instances of mass shootings at schools. So what’s changed? Equally obvious: the culture. But of course, few in the media want to broach that subject, perhaps because of the outsized influence that same media has had on its dissolution.

Geez, I had no idea pancakes had fallen so far out of favor. But how else to explain IHOP’s decision to change the ‘p’ in its logo to a “b” signifying a switch from pancakes to the more ubiquitous (and apparently lucrative) fast food niche of burgers. I think the Tampa Bay Times – in a nod to pancake lovers everywhere – got it right when they called out the restaurant chain for the change, saying what the ‘b’ actually stands for – at least to many of the chain’s customers – is betrayal.

An emergency medical technician pronounced the death at 2:09 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office report said. When a deputy arrived at 20 Whispering Sands Drive on May 18, the rescue unit from Fire Station No. 13 was on the scene, along with lifeguards from Siesta Public Beach, the report noted. CPR was being performed, the deputy wrote. The victim’s 21-year-old daughter told the deputy that she and her father had been swimming offshore of Beach Access 2, in water she estimated to be 5 feet to 6 feet deep. After about 10 minutes, she continued, her father began getting tired and said he did not feel he could make it back to shore. She was not able to help him, she added, so she began waving for help. The daughter said her father seemed unresponsive in the water for about five minutes before two bystanders swam out to help her bring him to shore. Kannady had no known medical conditions, the

Netflix has banned employees from looking at each other for more than five seconds, according to a story in the UK Sun. It’s part of a corporate effort to reduce cases of workplace harassment...sexual or otherwise. No Joke. As someone who met his future bride at a newspaper where we both worked, this strikes me as equal parts sad and misguided. Throughout most of human history, face-to-face communication has been the gold standard. It still is, despite its increasing devaluation by Facebook and other forms of so-called social media. There are so many non-verbal cues that inform our views of those around us...gleaned from watching others speak...observing their eyes, their lips, their gestures.
And there is so much misunderstanding today based on people’s ham-handed efforts to share their feelings in e-mails, or on facebook where there is no visual feedback to guide us in how our messages are being received (witness the Coach Peacock item above). There’s a reason our justice system guarantees as a foundational principle defendants’ rights to face their accusers – so judges and jurors can size up witnesses in person and thereby determine for themselves their integrity. Even the giants of literature can at best create a pale reflection of the wealth of insight gleaned from a smile, a frown, or an anxious glance... Have you ever read a description of Mona Lisa’s smile that came close to expressing what you see and feel when you look at it? We think we’re so brilliant with out modern forms of communication...But hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution – from the savannas of Africa to the halls of modern power – have honed our interpersonal skills in ways we barely understand, equipping us with skills that allow us to intuitively ‘read’ one another. And those skills have had much to do with our success as a species. Banning human beings from staring into each other’s eyes for more than five seconds? As well to count the angels dancing on a pin... As Shakespeare’s tragedies reveal time and again, when human nature is denied, devalued, ignored...trouble is dead ahead.

Now some of our readers may question the need to head ‘off-key’ to find a great beach bar, but there’s no denying Sharky’s creds in this regard, with its location directly on the gulf, proximity to the Venice Pier, relative lack of encroaching development, along with great food and live music. Siesta Resident Involved in Lawsuit Against Sarasota County Commission Files for District 4 Board Seat By Rachel Brown Hackney
Another picture perfect Siesta sunset Photo by Donnarose Melvin
Siesta Key resident Michael Cosentino, who remains embroiled in litigation against Sarasota County in a road vacation case, has filed as a Democrat for the County Commission District 4 seat held by Commissioner Alan Maio of Nokomis. Maio won his first term on the board in November 2014. Cosentino filed as a Democrat on June 14, Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Office records show. He will face Wesley Beggs, a marketing and media entrepreneur, in the Aug. 28 primary. Beggs filed for the race on Feb. 8. Maio also has a primary challenger — Siesta Key resident Lourdes Ramirez, a member of several Republican organizations; she filed on Feb. 20. The candidate qualifying period for all statewide and county races ended at noon on Friday, June 22, Suprvisor of Elections Ron Turner pointed out to the County Commission. Both Maio and Ramirez already have qualified, the Supervisor of Elections Office records note. In June 2016, Cosentino filed a complaint in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court, alleging that the County Commission violated the county’s Comprehensive Plan when it voted 4-1 on May 11, 2016, to vacate a 357-foot-long segment of North Beach Road. Only then-Commissioner Christine Robinson opposed the petition for the vacation, citing the same section of the Comprehensive Plan on which Cosentino based his complaint. Maio represents Siesta Key, which is part of District 4. He was among the board majority that approved the road vacation, which was sought by three sets of North Beach Road property owners. The case remains in the discovery phase. The county already has won dismissal of parts of the amended
complaint that Cosentino filed in February 2017. In recent months, Maio has far outpaced his opponents in fundraising, bringing in close to $90,000 in monetary contributions, plus a $10,000 loan he made to his campaign, his latest financial records show. He has raised another $474.89 through in-kind services. As of the end of May, he had spent $18,574.35. Still, Maio’s fundraising has slowed over the past couple of months. In May, he reported only $2,650 in monetary contributions, compared to $17,000 in April — though that April report included the $10,000 loan. In March, Maio reported $18,205 in monetary contributions and $199.89 in inkind services. Through May, Beggs had a total of $13,004.18 in monetary contributions, $1,147.82 in in-kind contributions and $4,322.93 in expenses. Ramirez’s May campaign finance report showed her with a total of $10,613 in monetary contributions, $4,444.42 in in-kind contributions and $3,300 in loans she has made to her run for office this year. Through May, she had spent $792.82, her June 6 campaign finance report said.

Every Sunday is a perfect time to come to the Key to reconnect with Mother Nature and to enjoy some wonderful entertainment. I’m talking about the Siesta Key Drum Circle that takes place each Sunday starting about an hour before sunset and lasting until about 10 p.m. The gathering meets up just south of the main pavilion - just follow your ears and watch for the swelling crowd. Please note the following rules of etiquette that need to be observed at the Drum Circle so that all can enjoy the experience: the inside of the drum circle is for participants only, not for people standing around. Feel free to enter the circle, take a picture and dance, but always keep moving. Never play someone’s drum without getting clearance from the owner. Always ask before borrowing other people’s property, especially hula hoops. Flash photography and bright video lights are distracting, so photograph during daylight or use a night vision camera. And finally, please do not drink alcohol or smoke inside the circle and respect our beach by placing all trash in the appropriate receptacles. Calle Minorga parking lot under construction In the spring of 2017, Sarasota County staff received an application for a private parking lot at 5160 Calle Minorga in Siesta Village. At last, that project is underway, the News Leader has learned. A county permit was issued on March 20 for the construction of the asphalt lot, county records show. Materials submitted to county permitting staff, which provided copies to the News Leader at its request, show the design calls for 20 spaces. The property owner still is 5160 Calle Minorga LLC. According to the state’s Division of Corporations, the registered agent for 5160 Calle Minorga LLC is Sentinel Management LLC of 1221 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. The registered agent for the latter company is Jeffrey R. McCurdy, who lists the same address as Sentinel Management. Two members of the firm listed in the records are Barry Silverstein and Dennis J. McGillicuddy. The General Notes on the parking lot plans point out that the site has been vacant. The total
acreage of the parcel is 10,503 square feet, the document says, which is approximately 0.24 acres. A sidewalk is included in the project, the document adds, and landscaping buffers have been incorporated into the design. Since early 2017, property owners have been contracting with FL Parking Co. to manage parking lots on the Key. Davidson Plaza was the first to have a pay station installed. More recently, Chris Brown, who bought the Lofino Building on Ocean Boulevard — next to the Old Salty Dog — in December 2017, has marked the parking area on that site for paid use. Dr. Gary Kompothecras also installed a FL Parking Co. pay station on the former Fandango Café property on Old Stickney Point Road, which is just east of Clayton’s Siesta Grille and the Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar.
Work begun on Oceane On June 14, almost exactly a year after construction was expected to begin, work began on the four-story Oceane luxury condominium project just north of Siesta Village. The site comprises the parcels at 4720,
4732 and 4740 Ocean Blvd. It is right on Big Pass. In mid-November 2017, the County Commission unanimously granted permission to the property owner to add an extra 2 feet in height to the seawall. In regard to that petition, Icard Merrill attorney William Merrill III acted as the representative of Randy Moore, managing partner of Crossgate Partners in Suwanee, Ga., who is the developer of Oceane. Merrill explained to the commission that just that much more seawall would enable buyers of the units to cut their flood insurance bills by 50% or more. Peter G. Laughlin, a broker associate with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, pooh-poohed the prospect — which the News Leader raised in mid-March 2017 — that worries about the potential dredging of Big Pass to renourish part of Lido Key Beach would diminish interest in the condos. However, the project website in mid-June said only two of the six units had been sold. The website also noted that the units cost between $3,990,000 and $4.5 million. Each has been designed to have 4,500 square feet of space, with “72 feet of windows overlooking
the Gulf of Mexico,” the website added. The condos are expected to be completed in the spring of 2019, the website pointed out. During the June 7 SKA meeting, Vice President Catherine Luckner told members, “In my 28 years of living here, I’ve never seen so many “For Sale” signs, as I come onto the Key. That is a very scary thing,” she added, that people are so fearful that the dredging of the pass might take place.

“Twinkle Twinkle little star …” “Little” star? Not hardly. Twinkle Schascle Ursula Yochim’s big, long name matches her big personality, big smile, big voice, and big heart. What instantly endears her to crowds, turns strangers into fans, and fans into friends, is that in addition to the astounding talent she brings to the stage, she brings a warm, positive vibe to the world. She genuinely cares about everyone and is probably the most accessible talent any audience ever embraced. Her “flower child of the 70s” appearance is not persona; it’s who she is… the visual confirmation of the person inside. Everything that was good about the 60s and 70s lives on not only in Twinkle’s music but in her heart with eternal optimism and the belief that everyone has the capacity for good. She hasn’t lived a charmed life of airy-fairy naiveté, and openly speaks of her struggle with alcoholism. Add the challenging times of taking on a major record label that wanted to change her, all the familiar challenges of young love and motherhood (and now grandmotherhood, hard as that may be to fathom), and you find an extraordinary talent inside a woman who is everyone’s gal pal, bff, sister, girlfriend, family member. Maybe what most makes her a star is the seamless combination of her extraordinary talent coupled with her “I’m just a beach girl” comfortable ease with herself. She’s a real person whose accessibility to and love for her fans endears her to them every bit as much as her talent does. her Warner Brothers album “Haunted by Real Life “* was released in summer of 1991 (under the artist name Schascle) a gorgeous full page ad of the album cover adorned industry mag Billboard. Warner sent a crew to Florida to make a video, so at the old Crosley Mansion, Twink, and top local players did her original tune “Can’t Get Love With Money.”** VH1 immediately put it into heavy rotation and a heady period of guest-VJ-ing (remember when music channels played music?) and meeting many of her musical idols followed. Adoring fans who had cheered her from the start felt like the journey was over; the local girl had made
Photo by Tim Britt, logo by Tony leclerc the energy of playing gigs in the city, is my perfect balance.” Soaking up the love and nourishment of family and friends gives her the strength to get out there and knock you off your seat when she moves in on a mike. One minute she may be cracking audiences up by singing to a band member “… put your left foot on my right shoulder…” and when he pretends to be trying to manage that maneuver gets her dismissive “not NOW, fool!” A few minutes later her rendition of Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” has big burly guys in the audience spellbound, transfixed, and teary. When everyone’s warmed up and ready to rock, she hauls out the heavy stuff (like “My Hate is Real.”***) From the silly to the soul wrenching, R&B to rock, blues screaming to soulful crooning, Twinkle owns whatever she sings. The fact that she chooses to share is our great luck, and for a taste of a crowd favorite check out “Sweet Child o’ Mine: Live at Siesta Beach, 2016.”*** *** A lot of the credit for the seemingly perfect sound is shared by Twinkle with her aptly named group Rock Soul Radio (because they are, after all, a rock band): drummer Benny Puckett, guitar player Lenny Brooks, bass player (and, in an interesting side-story, her not-discovered-till-mid-life blood brother) Tony LeClerc. Twink notes that Tony does doubleduty by handling the booking (941.565.5648) and says none of them could do this without the able assistance of crew members Scotty Thames, Tracy English, and Benton Byrd. Fresh off a European tour (which included an accompanying entourage of 30 fans) the big news in the band’s immediate future is a fate-driven recording date, the origins and execution of which we’ll have to share another day because it’s a fascinating “it could only happen to Twinkle” serendipitous story that can’t be done justice in this space. Meanwhile, check out Twinkle’s music online at ReverbNation**** at the band web site*****, and live July 28, at The Beach Club in Siesta Village.
good and everyone was thrilled for her. But life is never that easy. This girl who began singing in bars and clubs before she was even old enough to be legally admitted to those rooms was now a young woman who still had a long road ahead of her, and much of it was rocky. Along with dealing in the world of less-than-nice business people, presumptuous club owners, and dishonest managers, she also carried the troubles of any normal person … and alcohol was an especially destructive problem for someone who worked surrounded by booze and fans who showed their love by constantly sending drinks to the stage for her. What is a monumental challenge for any regular “nine-to-five then home-for-dinner” human being becomes magnified many times when your life is spent in the public eye and bars. It was tough. Behind the smiling face and soaring voice and filmy flowered shirts, a battle royal was raging every moment of every day. Twinkle doesn’t look the least bit like a tough person, but her determination to get and stay sober while working in such close approximation to her worst enemy (alcohol), could have easily undone a lesser spirit; her determination to refocus on the life she believed in was indomitable, and with great effort, she did it. Today living in a family compound in rural southwest Florida, Twinkle says that “the peace of this sanctuary, and

Island Humor [ You know it’s July in Florida when: • Hot water comes out of both taps. • You find out that a seatbelt buckle makes a pretty nice branding iron. • The trees are whistling for the dogs. • You find out that you can get sunburned through your car window. • The birds need to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground. • You burn your hand opening the car door. • The temperature drops below 95 and you put on a sweater. • You can make instant sun tea. • Shade determines the best parking space, not distance. • Farmers feed their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard boiled eggs. • When you step outside at 7:30 a.m., you break into a sweat. • Potatoes cook underground. This is convenient because all you have to do is pull one out and add salt, pepper, and butter. • You discover that asphalt has a liquid state. • You realize that it only takes two fingers to steer your car.
[ A student at a management school came up to a pretty girl and hugged her without any warning. The surprised girl said, “What was that?” The guy smiled at her, “Direct marketing!” The girl slapped him soundly. “What was that?!” said the boy, holding his cheek. “Customer feedback.” [ A mother was struggling to get the ketchup out of the bottle when the phone rang. She asked her four year old daughter to answer it. She heard her daughter say, “Mommy can’t come to the phone. She’s hitting the bottle.” [ I Pledge Allegiance Not quite getting it, the little first grader said, “I led the pigeons to the flag.” [ W h e n I w o r k e d f o r a n organization which delivered meals to the elderly, I would take along my four year old daughter. She was always fascinated by the appliances of old age - canes, walkers, wheelchairs, etc.

[ A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw that her father was putting on his tuxedo, she said, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit.” “Why not?” he asked. “Because it always gives you a headache the next morning.” [ A mother was ironing the clean laundry one day. Her son asked her, “Mother, why are you ironing those clothes?” His mother said, “To make them nice and wrinkle free.” Her son said, “Then, why don’t you iron Grandma’s face? [ The baby was coming way too fast so the paramedics were called. To make it worse, when they arrived, there was a power outage. The paramedics asked the four year old sister to hold the flashlight for them. Despite the difficulties, all went well and the mother delivered a baby boy. The paramedic smacked him on the behind and he began to cry. Looking over at the wide-eyed little girl, the paramedic asked her what she thought about what she had just witnessed. She said, “That naughty boy should have never crawled in there. Spank him again!” [ “Oh, boy! I’m glad you’re here,” the little boy said to his grandmother on his mother’s side. “Why?” she asked. “Because now Daddy will do the trick he’s been promising us.” “What trick?” “Well, he told Mommy that if you came to visit, he would climb the walls.” [ An 84 year old man went to the doctor for a physical. A few days later the doctor saw him walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. The next time the doctor saw him he asked how he was doing. “Great,” said the old guy. “I did just what you told me. ‘Get a hot momma and be cheerful.’ “ “I didn’t say that,” said the doctor. “I said, ‘You’ve got a heart murmur. Be careful.’ “

Snowy Plover Nesting News So far, this summer has not been a good one for snowy plovers on Siesta Key, Kylie Wilson, the Sarasota coordinator for Florida Audubon’s Shorebird Monitoring & Stewardship Program, told SKA members during their June meeting. While Siesta’s total number of nests in 2017 was approximately 20, she said, this year — with the season half over — only five have been counted. The primary reason the birds are not doing well on the island, Wilson added, is most likely the raiding of the nests by crows. The latter are very intelligent birds, she noted, and they readily seem to recall the sites of nests after they find them, so they can return to check for more eggs. Dogs on the beach are another major concern, Wilson stressed. Those animals are “a huge disturbance for the plovers.” The good news, she pointed out, is that a nest just had been found south of the public beach, which traditionally has been an area the birds have eschewed. A man raking the beach for a condominium complex discovered the nest, Wilson indicated in her weekly email update. The Siesta volunteer surveyor for Florida Audubon was able to get the area roped off right away, Wilson added in the email. The buffers are designed to keep people out of the areas, as the snowy plover nests are “pretty invisible,” she told the SKA members, especially when they are on the sand. The new one found on June 7, she added, “is right out in the sand.” In the June 7 email, Wilson wrote, “The female was seen this afternoon on the nest which was last confirmed with two eggs. She will likely be laying her third egg and incubating this weekend,” Wilson pointed out. (Sadly, crows ended up removing all those eggs, Wilson wrote in her June 14 email update to Audubon volunteers. On a happier note
in that report, Wilson reported, “Recently, there has been A LOT of activity — particularly in the dunes near the northern part of the public beach. Today I had a count of 8 Snowy Plovers and I saw several scrapes indicating nests could be imminent!” She added that the birds “are still trying so we have to keep doing what we can to keep them safe and hopefully have some success.”) Volunteers truly are needed, she stressed to the SKA audience, to keep an eye on the progress of that nest. She invited anyone interested in helping to email her at kwilson@ audubon.org. Yet another critical issue, she explained, is the need for parking spaces Audubon volunteers can use without worries about towing. Because nests often are close to condominium complexes, she said, public parking is not readily available. Siesta property owner and manager Michael Holderness told Wilson he could help with the parking situation, for which she offered her gratitude. Holderness also talked of having seen a lot of crows near the dumpsters at the Blasé Café and Gilligan’s Island Bar & Grill locations in Siesta Village, which are close to Beach Accesses 4 and 5. Lisa Cece, the special district coordinator for Sarasota County, who oversees Village upkeep for the county, explained that Wilson would need to contact the private business owners about dumpster problems. Cece suggested that Wilson also could contact the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce for assistance. Holderness did ask Wilson whether it would be possible to create caging over the snowy plover nests, to protect the birds from crows. Efforts have been made in some areas to use caging around piping plover nests, she responded. However, the initiative is not appropriate for snowy plovers, she

said. “They’re very, very sensitive to disturbance. These guys will abandon their nests at the drop of a hat,” even if eggs are close to hatching. “Their main and only defense, really,” she added, is to try to make themselves invisible against the backdrop of the sand. Furthermore, Wilson continued, crows will sit on top of a cage and pester birds on a nest. “I get that question a lot,” she noted, referring to cages as a means of protection. Yet another reason the cages do not work for snowy plovers, she said, is the fact that chicks “walk almost immediately” after hatching. The parents follow them around, to try to protect them, she noted. “The chicks need to be able to forage, as they would normally.”
The plovers, she added, “just have a horrible nesting strategy; yet, that’s how they’ve been doing it for centuries.” Robert Luckner, a member of the SKA’s Environmental Committee, took the opportunity of the discussion to offer an explanation about why Sarasota County staff years ago removed garbage cans from the public beaches and put them at the accesses. The containers, he said, “were a great magnet for crows,” which exacerbated problems for the beach-nesting birds on Siesta. In response to another question, Wilson also pointed out that she and volunteers cannot rope off potential nesting areas until eggs have been found. The only exception, she said, is on property owned by the Conservation
Foundation of the Gulf Coast, which is just north of the public beach. The foundation allows preposting, she said. However, in the past, she continued, the birds have been inclined to nest closer to beach vegetation. On one other positive note during her remarks to the SKA members, Wilson did point out that the northern end of Longboat Key has had “a lot of snowy plover nesting this year.” Of the six nests reported so far, she said, chicks had hatched from two of them; two remained active with eggs and two have failed.

Evolution of the Swimsuit Although these swimsuits still resembled dresses right down to the buttons and were made from heavy flannel or wool fabrics so as not to outline the female figure, a smaller silhouette signaled that the culture was progressing. Changing into them, however, was difficult, especially when done in the backseat of a car parked on Siesta/Crescent Beach— at least until I.G. Archibald built the first bath house there in 1919.
The heroine of swimwear liberation The first major advance in women’s swimwear can be attributed to one remarkable woman, Annette Kellermann, a polio survivor, internationally acclaimed Australian swimmer, diver, and ultimately a popular actress. Born in Australia in 1887, her story illustrates how women’s swimwear mirrors social changes. Female athletes in the early 20th century showed a special interest in swim competitions, especially in Australia, but were hampered by the required wool dresses. At the age of six, severe weakness in Kellermann’s legs due to polio required her to use steel braces for walking support. When the acute phase of her polio infection subsided, Annette was left with the weak, bowed legs. To help her overcome this disability, her parents wisely enrolled Annette in swimming classes. Soon, she was walking without leg braces and by age ten became a competitive swimmer. At age fifteen, she had mastered all strokes and her leg strength had improved to the extent that she was winning races. To improve her swimming performance and help overcome leg weakness, Annette wore a form-fitting one-piece suit. This allowed her to cut through water without being impeded, and it also started a fashion and cultural revolution. Beginning in Australia, and while traveling later in England and performing in the USA, Annette became famous for advocating the right of women to wear a “modern” one-piece bathing suit. She also became
Continued from cover story
well known as a spectacular high-diver and the pioneer of synchronized swimming which she helped popularize after her 1907 performance of the first water ballet in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome. That same year, however, Kellermann was arrested on Revere Beach, Massachusetts, by two policemen for “indecency” as she was wearing one of her fitted one-piece swimsuits. After a well-publicized public outcry, the charges were dropped as Bostonians decided that if England and New York accepted Annette’s attire, their planned court case was going nowhere. This dramatic event only served to make Annette even more famous and impactful. The popularity of Annette’s one-piece swimsuits soared and resulted in her developing the first line of women’s swimwear that became known as the “Annette Kellermans.”
The Roaring 20s bring risqué designs and more regulations Advances in women’s swimwear developed during the 1920s when reckless, pleasure-seeking behaviors naturally stimulated swimwear expressions of the new culture with sleeves eliminated, hemlines up, and the form-fitting upper section tighter. This led to the Bathing Suit Regulations of the American Association of Park Superintendents being enforced in the USA— if a bathing suit was too short, it could result in receiving a warrant from the police. Some beaches even had “bathing suit patrolmen” with tape measures to determine if a woman’s beach attire met the proper length standards and not be more than six inches above her knees. But in the 1930s, knee-length bathing dresses were discarded, legs and shoulders were bared, and tighter fitting swimwear became popular. During the 1940s, hems rose further and one-piece bathing suits appeared with spaghetti-strap tops. Two-piece swimsuits also existed then, but they were high-waisted, covering up the belly button and resembling a miniskirt, while the top was usually a modest halter/
The Future of Women’s Swimwear Meet Sarasota’s modern day version of Annette Kellermann, Charlotte Marin “I think the future of swimwear is certainly going to be more fashion forward. A day at the beach or pool is now another opportunity to wear something that reflects your style and personality. Thanks to social media, the swimwear industry has exploded within the last five years and because of that there are so many buying options for finding something special. In my opinion, a plain old bikini is no longer acceptable. Here at Floridita, we love beads, lace, crochet, velvet, bright colors and patterns and anything unique! The most important thing, of course, is the fit - something that hugs and lifts in all the right places and makes you feel comfortable and beautiful,” says Charlotte Marin. Charlotte Marin‘s life centers around the water. She double-majored in Biology and Spanish at Eckerd College and now holds a full-time job working as a marine biologist in fisheries. This entrepreneurial and beautiful young lady founded Mermaid Swim School, and has built it into a thriving business. She founded a swimsuit company called FLORIDITA SWIMWEAR, where she designs and produces hand-made, luxury bathing suits in beautiful patterns and colors, all handsomely studded with embroidery and beading. Born Charlotte Mansfield, she was raised in La Crosse, Wisconsin, located at the edge of the Mississippi River. Brought up by a young single mom, Charlotte spent an idyllic childhood enjoying nature, crafting and searching for new swimming holes. She attended Catholic School, where—as a young fashionista—she was forever pushing the limits of the dress code by wearing patterned tights and piling on the accessories. “I came really close several times to being sent home to change, but I always got away with it,” Charlotte grins. “My first job was in a pizza parlor at age 15. My mother dragged me over there. I soon

realized that I hated being micromanaged. I decided from that point forward I was only going to take jobs that I liked and were good for my resume. I knew I loved the water, so at 16 I became a lifeguard and swim instructor, and started working at the local community pools.” Of Norwegian descent, the lovely blonde went to Los Angeles one summer where she found a job working for a company that sent instructors to teach private, in-home swimming lessons. After she returned to Florida and graduated from Eckerd, she continued to teach in-home lessons, building a large client base. Her brush with the Rich & Famous, as well as the inherent need for water safety in Florida, inspired
bra hybrid that became fashionable on Siesta/Crescent Beach and was featured in tourism and real estate advertisements.
The fashion and fabric revolution after World War II After World War II and into the 1950s, the next revolution occurred with introduction of the triangle bikini in Paris as worn by French model and dancer Micheline Bernardini and named for the Bikini Atoll, where post-war testing of the atomic bomb was underway. Soon thereafter, the bikini was seen on beaches everywhere, despite the objections of religious organizations. Next, Hollywood became very influential. Bridgette Bardot popularized the bikini in 1953. Then, the “First Bond Girl,” Ursula Andress, made an everlasting impact and skyrocketed bikini sales when she appeared wearing the iconic two-piece she designed for the 1962 James Bond movie Dr. No. The Andress influence was augmented by the 1960s Feminist Movement as swimwear became even tighter with the continued development of stretchy synthetic fabrics of rayon, nylon, and then lycra. Most recently, as body sculpturing in fitness centers has become popular, a new bathing suit style has emerged with high bikini lines and more skin exposure. The 21st century has become the “anything goes” era with thongs, fishnet, and laced-siding styles, as well as high-cut “extra cheeky” design innovations prominent on Siesta/Crescent Beach. A bolder innovation, the monokini (topless) style, has been featured in Sports Illustrated and seen on European beaches. Undoubtedly, this evolution will continue, and we can expect Millennials in particular to appear on Siesta Key in even more risqué swimwear. You can read more about swimwear evolution in An Illustrated History of Siesta Key: The Story of America’s Best Beach, which is sold at both Davidson Drugs stores, Captain Curt’s gift shop, and Crescent Beach Grocery.

By Diana Colson the idea of starting Mermaid Swim School, www.mymermaidswimschool.com Always the water-lover, Charlotte is big into sailing. She worked as a First Mate sailing aboard various boats docked in St. Pete. These vessels took customers on various day sailing trips, mainly Dolphin Watching and Sunset Cruises. She nearly accepted a position sailing around the Caribbean, when along came a full-time job opportunity as a Biologist working in fisheries, the job she had always wanted. In spite of her passion for science, Charlotte always loved art and was looking for ways to fulfill her creative side. While studying super challenging courses such as physics and organic chemistry in college, she thought to herself that her “backup plan” would be to attend design school. After moving to Sarasota, she met and married Sebastian Marin, a soccer lover who was born in Medellin, Colombia, and had moved to Sarasota as a boy. In 2011, the couple went to visit his family in Colombia. The trip was an eye-opener for Charlotte. “The details of the clothing really caught my eye. They have really intricate stitching, lots of embellishments, bright colors, interesting patters—and amazing body confidence. In Latin America, it doesn’t matter what size you are: you’ll rock a bikini. I wanted to bring that spirit back to the United States, with my own Latin-inspired line of swimwear.” To say Charlotte’s Floridita swim suits are beautiful is an understatement. They are stunning and utterly unique! The suits look lovely on the website, of course, but when you see them for real—WOW! Charlotte is drawn to color, and uses a wide array of florals and an assortment of patterns—just as she did during her early years at Catholic School! You can find pictures of her suits at www.FloriditaSwimwear.com. You can also shop for them at CALIFLORIDA SURF & SKATE at 5221 Ocean Blvd. on Siesta Key.

Candice Riedel with a Siesta Key redfish
July fishing can be excellent, but tactics need to be a little different and windows of opportunity are smaller. It is simply too hot to fish in the middle of the day. Early morning will be the most reliable time to fish, evenings are good too, but frequent thunderstorms can make planning a trip difficult. Anglers who don’t mind fishing in the dark will have success at night, and they will beat the summer heat! Action on the deep grass flats from the north end of Siesta Key should be very good for speckled trout, along with bluefish, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, pompano, and jacks. A high tide in the morning is favored for anglers to drift the flats and cast Bass Assassin jigs, plugs, spoons, and live shrimp under a popping cork. Netting up a bunch of shiners and chumming the deep flats will usually result in non-stop action. The flats and oyster bars south of Stickney Pt. down to Blackburn Pt. will hold some nice trout in July, and that area gets very little pressure in the summertime. The key is water temperature; if it is too high, the bait and gamefish will not be there. Redfish and snook will also cruise the bars and shorelines in search of prey. Areas that drop off quickly into three or four feet will be the most productive spots. A hand-picked shrimp is deadly fished early in the morning on a high tide. Anglers choosing artificial lures will score with topwater and shallow diving plugs, scented soft plastics, and weedless gold spoons. Redfish will begin to school up in July and can be caught in very shallow water The largest trout also prefer shallow water, so don’t be surprised if a “gator” intercepts an offering meant for a redfish. These fish should be released unharmed, they are the female breed stock and are crucial to a healthy trout fishery. Night fishing will be exciting and productive in July. Lighted docks and bridges attract glass minnows and shrimp, which in turn attract the gamefish. Snook are abundant, but trout, reds, jacks, ladyfish, and snapper will also be caught at night. Live shrimp works very well free-lined in the current with little or no weight. A 24” piece of 25 lb flourocarbon leader and a 1/0 live bait hook is the basic rig. Lures will also catch fish, but can be difficult to cast at night. Fly fisherman will score with a small white snook fly such as the Grassett’s Snook Minnow tied on a #4 hook. Tarpon will still be plentiful in the Gulf of Mexico, although the anglers will not be. The large schools will have broken up, and although the fish don’t show as well, they eat better. Pinfish and crabs drifted out 6 feet under a cork at first light will catch tarpon in July. Point of Rocks on Siesta Key is a proven spot to fish.

Notes from the Island Fishmonger Hogfish is the “Filet Mignon of the Sea” Growing up in Michigan, I was not as wellversed in the knowledge of fish as I am today. I knew about Pike, Whitefish, Walleye, and Rockfish as most of my fishing career was spent on a lake in Upstate NY. It was not until I moved to South Florida as an adult that I even heard of this Hogfish and not until I actually started selling fish for a living did I know how popular this fish is. The Hogfish is little known to those outside of the Sarasota to Florida Keys area. I love the unflattering name and the look of this fish as its name comes from its hog-like snout and man do I love the taste. It is hard to even keep this fish in stock as once it hits the retail fish counter or restaurant menu, this delicate and mild fish flies out the door. I would describe this fish as the perfect combination of flavor and texture because they are sweeter than Grouper, flaky like a Cod, and as rich as Scallops. When I say this iconic fish is mild tasting, I mean it! When asked to describe the flavor by my customers, I either tell them it’s like biting into a delicious cloud from heaven or it’s the Filet Mignon of the sea. This is a great fish to eat whole (baked or fried) and it is also delicious when served as a filet with a sauce such as a lemon butter caper sauce like a Francaise or Piccata style. Unfortunately, like I mentioned earlier, this fish is hard to come by and most places can’t put this fish on the menu because they cannot guarantee a consistent inventory. Chef Aaron of Big Water Fish Market does have it on the menu and serves it with his own honey Sriracha cream sauce with a steamed
seasonal veggie medley. Hog fish is a bit more expensive than the other fish due to the issue of supply and demand. Another reason this fish is a bit rare is because the Hogfish will not bite a hook and line. Smart fish. This fish actually has to be spearfished. The best Florida fishmongers have a spear fisherman with a steady shot on the payroll. A missed shot with a speargun can result in damaged flesh. As I write this article I’m in Marathon, Florida and already have Hogfish on the brain. I plan to head south to the Hogfish Grill in Key West today to satisfy my craving. Here are five facts about Hogfish that you probably didn’t know: 1. Hogfish is not from the Snapper family as most people think. It is actually part of the Wrasse family and is more closely related to a Parrot Fish than a Snapper. 2. Hogfish uses its elongated pig-like snout to rummage and graze for crustaceans that are buried in the ocean floor. 3. Juvenile Hogfish start out as female and then become male as they mature. 4. Males tend to be more intensely colored with a signature black spot behind the pectoral fins. Females are pale grey or brown in color. 5. Hogfish have been recorded to live up to 11 years. Easy Hogfish Piccata recipe: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Season your 4-ounce Hogfish fillets (total of 2 pounds of fish) with Deli Dust and dredge in flour. Sauté the fish in oil for about 4 minutes, flipping halfway through. Remove the fish to a platter. Deglaze the pan with ¼ cup white wine, whisking for about 1 minute. Add 2 juiced lemons and 2 tablespoons of capers and stir. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and whisk away to incorporate and bring the sauce together. Pour your sauce over the fish and garnish with fresh chopped parsley and a lemon wedge. Bon appetit!

Just roll out of bed...your hair looks great!
“Living life in the ‘Light’” “Create the habit of gratitude in your life and watch your life transform.” Gratitude and staying in a grateful state of energy is probably one of the most popular topics when it comes to well-being, wouldn’t you say? Yet, thousands have come to me feeling quite the opposite. Many are in a state of worry and stress. I’ve heard some say, “How can I be grateful and happy when I have a sick family member, or have no idea if I’m going to make the rent, or be able to keep my job, or whether or not my relationship is going to fall apart?” At one point or another in our lives, many can relate to these concerns. I know I sure can having experienced several layoffs, and having been the caregiver when my precious mother had a terminal illness. But practicing the habit of gratitude, helps keep our mental state more positive, and this kind of energy in turn helps us handle these difficult situations. What makes it easier to be grateful is to associate this state of being with trust and peace. Consider that when we focus heavily on what we’re grateful for, it becomes a great reminder. A reminder that what we’re often grateful for, are things we prayed for that were granted. Perhaps pause for a moment before continuing reading further. Think of two things or experiences you’ve prayed for and received. The more we think of things to be grateful for, the more the level of trust and faith within our heart increases for the next areas of concern. And peace enfolds us where we start to have a knowing that whatever we’re presented with in our lives, will serve a Higher purpose, and will come with all that is needed to handle it. Staying in a state of gratitude also helps us to actually enjoy and celebrate any good that happens to us, no matter how small it may be. One of the keys to staying in a state of gratitude and decreasing worry, is to let go of the tight mental hold of how you want things to turn out. Where you set your intention, or as I call it, “place your order with the Universe,” then trust and let go of when and how you want things to turn out. This allows the Universe to orchestrate and serve us what is needed for all involved, and His peace is included. Trust is the main factor here. When we trust the Source we’re sending our order to,
it enables peace to set in. When we trust and feel peace, patience follows. Hence, that tight hold to the outcome is released. A good quick prayer for assistance can be, “God (Infinite Source - or whatever your loving Higher power is), please help me to feel your love, peace, patience, trust, and comfort in my heart, please and thank you.” As you feel that releasing breath, allow yourself to think of a couple things you’re grateful for. Eventually this becomes habit. And so does the feeling of peace. And isn’t feeling peaceful one of the main goals? What has greatly helped so many, including myself, reap the benefits of gratitude energy, is to write in a gratitude journal. Keeping it simple seems to make writing in it consistently much easier. I have a very tiny inexpensive notebook. For each day I include the date, and title it, “I am beyond grateful for:”, and I number each statement. I carry over the numbers, and I’m up to 1443 gratitude entries since last August. I write in it when I wake up, and before I go to sleep. Some days, I write just two things. There are no rules. When you allow yourself to stay in a state of gratitude on a daily basis, you’ll start finding it easier to forgive and release past hurts and wrongs, as well as feel love in your heart for the smallest of things. Acknowledging what we’re grateful for causes us to get in the habit of thinking more constructively even in the most challenging situations. This in turn keeps our energy lighter to effectively handle them. And last but not least, practicing gratitude daily, manifests more reasons to be grateful. Consider adding daily gratitude to your life, and enjoy the positive transformation that comes with it. ~♥ Donnarose Melvin is an Ancestral Energy Clearing/ Healing Intuitive whose pleasure it is to serve clients worldwide. PENTAS (Pentas Lanceeolata) PENTAS is a genus of flowering plants in the Rubiaceae family which is also known by the name Egyptian Star Cluster. Pentas is loaded with nectar and is ever-blooming, making it the ideal plant to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden. Because of this, pentas is the most popular flowering perennial in Florida. Pentas is made up of star shaped flowers that grow in rounded clusters and are prolific bloomers. They come in red, white, pink, and purple although the red seems to attract the most pollinators. There are two varieties of pentas, tall and dwarf. The pollinators prefer the tall variety but will also nectar on the dwarf. These plants are well adapted to Sarasota summers in that they are very drought tolerant and, once well rooted, can withstand our hot summer temperatures with minimum irrigation. Big Sarasota Pass Dredging Canter referenced the expert testimony of one of the SOSS2/SKA witnesses — R. Grant Gilmore Jr. — as the basis for his decision on the borrow area restrictions. Gilmore, who is president of the Vero Beach consulting firm Estuarine, Coastal and Ocean Science Inc., explained that he had discovered — through a field trip to the pass in the summer of 2017 — that spotted sea trout spawn in two areas of the waterway. Gilmore pointed out that such spawning sites are not common. As Canter noted in his Recommended Order, Gilmore testified that the areas are used repeatedly and “are important to the conservation of the species.” Those trout spawn from April through September, Canter added. The Lido Key Residents Association (LKRA) — which was allowed to intervene in the case — submitted Exceptions to Canter’s order, saying Canter was wrong to give weight to Gilmore’s testimony. “Dr. Gilmore’s field investigation consisted of a single, one hour visit wherein he utilized a hydrophone to detect sounds in the water,” the LKRA argued. “In that one hour, Dr. Gilmore testified that he heard spotted sea trout spawning in certain areas, the sounds being more intense in some areas as opposed to others. … Dr. Gilmore did not testify that he saw any spotted sea trout, his identification of their location and spawning activity was solely based on judging what he was hearing,” the LKRA contended. “Dr. Gilmore presented no evidence to suggest that there were spotted sea trout spawning sites within the entirety of proposed Cut B,” it added. Regardless of the stipulations in the Final Order, a June 19 city news release said, “Subject to any future litigation delaying this critical project, work is expected to begin by Spring 2019 and be completed by next hurricane season.” In that release, City Manager Tom Barwin noted of the Final Order, “After losing approximately 15 feet of shoreline during Hurricane Irma and the deceptively destructive Subtropical Storm Alberto last month, this is uplifting news.” He continued, “In addition to the city’s infrastructure being increasingly vulnerable to saltwater intrusion, we are now experiencing high risks of property damage and business interruption.” The release also pointed out that an agreement between the city and the USACE “will be executed soon. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the dredging portion of the project while the City will be responsible for monitoring it.” Accompanied by city commissioners and Barwin on June 16, Rubio referenced the $13.5 million in funding the USACE announced for the Lido Renourishment Project on June 11. “Our job now is to get that money going,” Sen. Rubio added. “This time next year, there should be a beach out there.” City staff has estimated the total cost

of the project at approximately $22 million, with the rest of the funding to be split evenly between county Tourist Development Tax revenue set aside for the city for beach renourishment/ maintenance initiatives and a state grant. Since Canter filed his Recommended Order, Barwin has sought to persuade the SKA and SOSS2 from pursuing further legal challenges. In the news release, he said, “I again urge the handful of people litigating this matter to forego additional litigation and work with us to become environmental and shoreline protection leaders in the state of Florida. I remind all this permit requires unprecedented monitoring and future adjustments as warranted.” “We’re pleased that Lido has gotten funds,” SKA President Gene Kusekoski said in a June 20 telephone interview, referring to the USACE’s June 11
announcement. “They are our neighbors and they are in crisis. … Our one and only objection is the source of sand.” The SKA has been especially concerned, Kusekoski continued, about dredging in Cut C. “Once you dig that trench, you change the dynamic of the pass and God knows what’s going to occur.” Kusekoski also took exception to the fact that Barwin continues to indicate that only a small number of Siesta residents are opposed to removal of sand from Big Pass. An SKA survey in 2017 showed 88% of the nonprofit’s members were resolutely against the project, Kusekoski noted, and they represented about one-third of the island’s residents. SKA Vice President Catherine Luckner pointed out in a June 20 email that the SKA filed a Verified Complaint in March 2017 in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court as a second means of halting the dredging
of Big Pass. “The purpose of the SKA Verified Complaint is to encourage the City of Sarasota to engage Sarasota County to develop a Best Practices project,” Luckner stressed. “We hoped the complaint would encourage the City of Sarasota as a ‘good neighbor’ to work with the County regarding coastal management,” she added in the email. “SKA will continue to work for a best practices project, through donations, researching and engaging governmental representatives, serving the public interest of natural resources, and focusing on the recreational and financial stability of our unique and beloved coastal community,” she concluded her statement. In a telephone interview Peter van Roekens, chair of SOSS2 said, “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure Siesta is not harmed.”

Streetlights on Siesta Key to Make Transition to LED Starting in Late July By Rachel Brown Hackney / SarasotaNewsLeader.com Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL) plans to begin switching out high pressure sodium lights for LED fixtures on the 325 poles that it owns and maintains on the north and south ends of Siesta Key. That was the news Lisa Cece, Sarasota County’s special district coordinator, and two representatives of FPL provided about 25 members of the Siesta Key Association (SKA) during the organization’s regular meeting on June 7. The project, set to start around July 23, will not encompass Siesta Village, however, Cece explained. Yet, “it’s hard to see people in the crosswalks,” SKA member Robert Luckner pointed out. The decorative lighting in the Village is part of a district for which the property owners pay upkeep, Cece responded, and they have not expressed an interest in making a switch. Furthermore, she continued,
“The county’s not in a position for big expenditures.” The County Commission has been working on initiatives with staff to pare costs in an effort to balance upcoming fiscal year budgets. Eventually, Cece said, she believes the LED conversion will be considered in the Village. She also explained that although part of FPL’s lighting area west of the Siesta Drive drawbridge is in the City of Sarasota, city leaders have not decided yet whether to proceed with a switch. Discussions between FPL representatives and city staff have been underway, she noted. The project plans called for work to start in the vicinity of the Higel Avenue/Faubel Street intersection and encompass the northern and southern segments of the island, except for Siesta Village. The annual savings for FPL

for 296 of those 325 lights on the island has been projected at 9.84%, Eric S. Culling, FPL senior sales rep for commercial and industrial clients, told the SKA audience. The yearly bill is expected to drop from $33,182.88 to $29,918.04 for the 296 streetlights, a PowerPoint slide said, while the switch also will eliminate 70 metric tons of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere each year. The remainder of the 325 streetlights will have a higher wattage fixture to provide greater illumination at areas such as large intersections, Culling explained. The LED lighting also will enable drivers to see true colors, he pointed out, instead of their observing everything in an orange shade created by the high pressure sodium streetlights. Under the terms of an ordinance the County Commission approved in 1982 — which won voter support in a referendum the same year — the Siesta Key Lighting District has 325 streetlights that FPL owns and maintains under agreement with the county, Cece told the SKA audience. The special ad valorem tax assessment for the current fiscal year for the expense of those lights, she added, is $25,487; property owners within the district’s boundaries pay for the lighting. Madonna Rykken, a senior sales consultant with FPL, explained that the company’s primary interest in making the conversion to LED lighting is to save money. With about 10 million customers throughout the state — including those on both coasts — FPL still manages to charge some of the lowest utility rates in the Unites States, Rykken pointed out. “The biggest expense that we actually have is to build a new power plant,” she said. The greater the efficiencies the company can achieve for existing customers, she added, the longer it can hold off on constructing a new facility, which most likely would cost about $100 million. As more people continue to
Lisa Cece of the Siesta SKA examines the new LED light
move to Florida, she added, the company has been working hard to contain its costs. Culling explained that LED technology has undergone a series of improvements over the years. Company leaders wanted to make certain it was at a good stage in that process before beginning to implement it, he added. In 2017, FPL asked the state’s Public Service Commission for a rate increase so it could start making the conversion to LED lighting, Rykken noted. In March 2017, the commission granted the request. Last summer, FPL began implementing the changes on the east coast, she said. In January, it was ready to start the process on the west coast. “We wanted to stage it so we wouldn’t run out of inventory.” One other important facet of the project, she said, is the incorporation of a “smart node” in each fixture, which stays in constant communication with the company’s power grid. When a streetlight is close to the point of failing, she added, the node will let the grid know. Whenever a light does fail, she continued, the company automatically generates a ticket so an FPL employee can put in a new light. “
Other advantages with LED lighting Rykken then introduced Culling, calling him her “tech master.” Culling talked of the “orange” effect of the high pressure sodium lighting (HPS). “The grass is orange. The white car is orange,” he pointed out. From a technical standpoint, he continued, the HPS lights have a color rendering index (CRI) of about 20. The CRI of full daylight is 100, he added. “That’s kind of your reference point.” With LED lights, he said, the CRI is 70. “The grass is going to start to look green.” LED streetlights also are important from a safety and security standpoint, Culling noted. Drivers are able to see the actual colors of other vehicles on the road and of buildings they might be seeking as reference points. In the event of accidents or criminal incidents, he said, LED systems make it possible for people to accurately report the colors of clothing and other cars. With help from SKA President Gene Kusekoski, Culling was able to show the audience a video FPL produced about the differences between LED and HPS lighting situations. The video may be seen at this link: https://vimeo.com/271544182/ e80b8f1c3a.

Bay Tree Club Crosswalk Advocates Achieve Their Goal By Rachel Brown Hackney Regular readers will recall that in April, residents of the Bay Tree Club on South Midnight Pass Road talked about their years-long endeavor to convince Sarasota County staff of the need for a crosswalk between the two sections of their complex — the building on the Intracoastal Waterway side and the structures across the road, facing the public beach. County staff repeatedly had turned them down, for a variety of reasons. Yet, the two leaders of the initiative — Libby Sloan and Margi Ryder — were not about to give up. They were able to enlist the assistance of Gene Kusekoski, president of the Siesta Key Association (SKA), in bringing their concerns to the attention of County Commissioner Alan Maio. At last, their hard work has proven fruitful. During the June 7 SKA meeting, Kusekoski told the audience that,

thrilled they were. She wanted to hold off on an announcement, however, until she and Ryder saw the work actually getting underway, just out of an abundance of caution. Ryder attached photos to illustrate that county staff, indeed, was following through with construction.

Doubleheader in July Orioles vs. Yankees Due to the postponement of a game in early June, there will be an Orioles doubleheader at Camden Yards, in Baltimore, on July 9th. Price of gas too high for the trip north? Well then, how about a ballet doubleheader on July 28th when the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School has two performances at the Sarasota Opera House. There are a couple / three things that are really top notch at the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School. The first is the level of instruction at all age levels. Overseeing all the classes are the co-founders, Ariel Serrano and Wilmian Hernandez, who defected from Cuba in 1993 and joined the Sarasota Ballet in 1994. They and their staff trained in the National School of Ballet system in Cuba and danced there and around the world (it seems everyone loves
and respects Cuban Ballet) before settling here. The second nice thing is the fact that the students of SCBS get better and better. In addition to the Children’s Program there are separate classes for Young Dancers, another for Pre-Professionals, and also an Adult Program. As the children get older and can absorb the required techniques, they are channeled into a path that can lead them as far as they wish to go. And, for those who really want to sharpen their skill set, there is each year’s Summer Intensive. This is ballet training of the highest order. Recent stars of Cuban ballet have been Sara Acevedo, Victor Gilí Méndez, Ana Julia Bermúdez, and Luis Javier Fuentes, and are now the teachers of the current crop of Cuban ballet stars. Oh, and they are also teaching the students in Sarasota, during 2018’s Summer Intensive, so there should be a high level of ballet at the Opera House. Dancing at the evening performance are Kalle Sascha Wigle of the Royal Swedish Ballet, Charlotte Tonkinson of the Royal Ballet and Ariel Martínez Fabré of the Cuban National Ballet. Sarasota Cuban Ballet School graduates coming back to entertain us are Francois Liorente (State Street Ballet), Emma Town (Nashville Ballet) and Lucy Hamilton (Ballet San Antonio). Sound like an International Ballet Extravaganza? Well, it certainly seems to be. Many pieces they will be dancing to are by Ariel Serrano and by SCBS’s resident choreographer, Tania Vergara. There will be more than 50 students dancing during the afternoon performance - a fun way to check out the school’s capabilities with your own rising stars. For more info about classes & tickets for July 28th, and future year’s Summer Intensives, check out SRQcubanballet.com.
