H
ow could employees at a gift store in a tourist town possibly enjoy taking inventory? Especially when that inventory hovers around 250,000 pieces, ranging from 39 cents to $800, and requires a hand count. That’s right, no scanners, no clickers, and certainly no guessing. Oh, and it can take up to two weeks to complete. Each and every month. But that’s business as usual at Green Turtle Shell & Gift City, located at 6525 Midnight Pass Road in Southbridge Mall. “I can never put a finger on it,” manager Patty Puma said of why her 11 employees enjoy the process. “And we are even emptying baskets of little things when we add it all up. Most people would run for the hills.
“We’ll even get up on a 12-foot ladder when we do it, including me. I don’t mind. It’s fun.” It’s an attention to detail that fits the store’s mantra – “If you can’t find it here, you can’t find it anywhere,” said Puma of what she calls her “astronomical” array of offerings in the 4,000-square-foot store. “We’ll even order something that a customer requests,” added Puma, who recently ordered a certain type of swimming goggles for someone. “I’ll write down the customer’s name and phone number and then hunt it down, whether it’s from one of our other stores or through a sales rep. This Robin Hood likes to give to the tourist By Ned Steele “Step into my office,” says Mark Toomey, proprietor of Robin Hood Rentals, with a smile. Which is how you find yourself in the shotgun seat of a bright orange golf cart parked on the tarmac outside the shop, chatting with Toomey about the business of making Key visitors happy with a seemingly endless supply of golf carts, bicycles, scooters, scoot coupes (more about those later), paddle boards, kayaks, beach chairs, gazebos and umbrellas, segways, tennis racquets and more. Really, Robin Hood’s got pretty much anything you’d need to enjoy life on Siesta Key and to get around

on it, except maybe an extra pair of feet. The “office” is whichever golf cart sits at the head of the row, because every inch of Robin Hood is crammed -- outside with rows and rows of vehicles, and in the warren of rooms inside with what the shop just calls “beach stuff.” That includes sunscreen, hoodies, T-shirts, swimsuits, souvenirs and merch, and the like. (No, you don’t rent sunscreen or a shirt. These items you have to buy, and people seem to be doing so, eagerly.) So, if you want to talk to Toomey about the business, you grab a seat on a cart. Which we did.
The first question, of course: Why Robin Hood? Because Mark hails from Nottingham, England, the same town where the legendary hero bandit roamed. The analogy ends there: Toomey will rent you anything at a fair price, but the business model does not include either robbing from the rich or giving to the poor. Back in 2007, Toomey sold his corporate recruiting business in the U.K., hopped the pond, and landed on Siesta Key. “I’d always wanted to do something different,” he recalled.

Arts on the Horizon By Rodger Skidmore Stranger things (not the TV show)
You know how it is, you are strolling along the beach and see a cluster of seashells in a shape reminiscent of the gentlemen from the movie The Shape of Water? Well, you are not alone – Michele Oka Doner has been there, seen that, and done that. The “done that” is the transformative stage of her “found that, what must I do with that” inner directive. Doner takes the things that she sees and transforms them into the things that we can see … if we go to the Ringling Museum’s exhibit Michele Oka Doner: The True Story of Eve which runs through June 2 of this year in the Monda Gallery. Seashells, mushrooms, shredded bark peeling from a tree; so many strange and beautiful things that touch our souls but briefly. Nature, being ephemeral by nature, appears, decays or erodes, and then disappears. Unless, of course, Ms. Doner sees them before they exit, stage left. An individual half-inch bit of broken shell or splintered coral, picked up on the beach, is something we can look at for a moment, discard, and barely remember. But aggregate enough and a sculpture forms, especially even more attractive when cast in bronze. When viewed, our mind can take the image, flit through our memories and not find a match. But then, like Google, suggest other holographic-like images which we have previously retained. This new, individual image, stored within ourselves, is now part of us, to be brought up at will – perhaps when we, ourselves, are walking along some otherwise deserted beach. Doner, born in Florida, touched by its nature, has always been in touch with that
part of herself. Bits of her, pieces of her structured mind, are scattered around the world in museums and private collection, like spontaneously generated life forms popping up everywhere. Doner and Ola Wlusek, curator of modern and contemporary art, have created a safe haven in the Monda Gallery for these random selections of formed nature, permitting and fostering a viewing environment letting us walk to and around what Doner has shared with us. In Cabaret they sang ‘Money, Money, Money, Money’
Money does make the world go around, especially when the money goes around fast enough. And Tom Cruise was in the film Jerry Maguire which was all about someone wanting money. Remember the iconic “Show me the money!” line? But a different focus is shown on money in Florida Studio Theatre’s production of The Lehman Trilogy, a five-time Tony Awardwinning play running through March 24 at the Gompertz Theatre. This play is not just about wanting the money (although there is plenty of that), it is also about what it does to the people getting it and how they got, kept, and ultimately lost it. For years, Lehman Brothers was viewed as one of America’s most solid institutions, long after the original three brothers were gone, but is now viewed as a failed entity. The brothers started by building their company’s foundation as a dry goods store in Alabama, but soon expanded. It was not a case of show me the money, but more of a go to the money, and then start to play (wheel and deal) with it. When one knows where money comes from and where it goes, it can be easy to move with it and thus have some level of control. In Alabama they accepted cotton as payment for their goods, then started buying cotton, selling cotton, and ultimately

controlling cotton. They saw that cotton was, in effect, a form of money. The next step was to buy, sell, and control money itself – a natural progression. This play, by Stefano Massini, was written after much research; tracking the money and those men who, to some degree, actually created it. This is quite a large production with a cast of more than 50. Or, actually, 50 characters, who are played by those who also play the three Lehman brothers. While attendees of The Lehman Trilogy are focused on the money, some are enjoying themselves in other ways. Specifically, by harking back to the ‘70s, watching and listening while a musical guitar revue, Take it to the Limit, channels rock n’ roll from the ‘70s (Allman Brothers, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac) and takes it to the max in the FST Cabaret through April 14. Also in the Cabaret, on alternate days, the FST singers explore The Flip Side, a satiric, sardonic (silly), look at the what makes us laugh at ourselves and at “them” when most we need it. They take a good look at the best comic
Two worlds that won’t collide – Beyonce singing a song to the music of Clara Schumann and Ms. Schumann accompanying Beyoncé. But they will be on the stage together at the Harvest, on 17th Street in north Sarasota, the evening of the 3rd of March. Violist Molly Carr and pianist Anna Petrova will be performing a concert celebrating female composers through the ages – specifically from the 1100s until the present. In addition to the composers previously mentioned, there will be pieces by Florence Price, Amy Beach, Michelle Ross, Vivian Fung and others. The compositions played at the concert were all written between the late 1800s and the present time. The Ross composition that will be played was commissioned by the Perlman Music Program, which is presenting this concert. There will be a pre-performance talk where contributions of earlier female composers will be discussed. More info at perlmanmusicprogramsuncoast.org.

ou may find reds and big trout concentrated in potholes this month. Action with trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and more on deep grass flats can be good depending on conditions. There should also be good catch-and-release snook action in rivers, creeks and canals, although fishing docks for snook and other species is also a good option. It may be worth checking the coastal gulf for tripletail, cobia, false albacore (little tunny) and more when it’s warm. Snook season is now closed through the end of February, although catch-and-release fishing is allowed. Use tackle heavy enough to catch and release snook quickly with as little handling as possible. They are temperature sensitive, so I won’t target them if the water temperature dips below 60 degrees. However, fishing lighted docks in the Intracoastal Waterway at night with lures and flies can be very good right now. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, Gurglers and shrimp fly patterns will work well for fly anglers. Spin anglers should score with CAL jigs with shad tails or 4-inch jerk worms, DOA Tiny TerrorEyz and DOA 2-3/4-inch and 3-inch shrimp. Fish peak tidal flows for the best action. Full regulations and details for all species can be viewed at myfwc.com. You should also find snook in rivers, creeks
and canals this month. Fish deeper water in outside bends to locate snook where you may catch them with CAL jigs and shad tails or jerk worms, DOA Baitbusters or diving/suspending plugs. You may also find reds, juvenile tarpon and even largemouth bass in the same areas depending on salinity. Reds should be a good option this month. You’ll find them concentrated in potholes when the tide is low. Fly anglers should score with lightly weighted flies fished on a 10- to 12-foot leader with a floating fly line. Reds feed on crustaceans this time of the year, so crab and shrimp fly patterns should work well. They may tail on shallow grass flats when the tide is low. You’ll need weedless rigged plastic baits or flies with weed guards to target tailing reds. A CAL shad tail on a weedless hook or a DOA shrimp rigged weedless and fished backwards are a couple of my favorite lures for tailing reds. You may also find reds around docks, along with snook, sheepshead, flounder and more. Little Sarasota Bay has numerous oyster bars and docks that often hold reds in January. Work CAL jigs slowly along the bottom for the best action. You’re likely to find big trout in many of the same areas that you find reds. In my opinion, it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. The same lures, flies and techniques that are used for reds will also work for big trout. You’ll also find trout on deep grass flats along with blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano, flounder and more. I like to drift and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and a variety of plastic tails and DOA Deadly Combos. Since trout can
sometimes hold very tight to a particular spot or area, try to cover as much water as possible to find them. Once you’ve located fish you can shorten your drift or anchor on them. A GPS can be useful for this type of fishing since the breadcrumb trail will allow you to duplicate your drift. A drift anchor will slow your drift so you can fish it more thoroughly or make it easier for fly anglers to move their fly. My favorite deep grass flats, have a good mix of grass and sand with a strong tidal flow. Even though there may not be much happening in the coastal gulf this month in the way of sight fishing it may be worth a look when it is warm. Migratory species such as king and Spanish mackerel, cobia and tripletail probably have moved further south, however they could reappear during warm ups. Also look for false albacore (little tunny) when it’s warm since they may move from offshore to inshore depending on where baitfish are located. This can be one of the toughest months of the year to fish. However, if you are able to choose when to fish based on tides and weather, it can be good. Action is usually good as weather fronts approach. Following fronts, fishing may be tough for a couple of days so afternoons may fish better at that time. I’ll let the stage of the tide determine where to look for fish. When the tide is low, look for reds tailing on shallow grass or reds, trout and more in potholes or around docks. Look for reds or big trout cruising on shallow grass flats on sunny afternoons when the tide is high.

This guy is in quite the pickle
Ken Scoggins used a little bit of social media and a lot of passion for pickleball to help get Siesta Key into the swing of things By Jane Bartnett
P
ickleball. It’s the fastest-growing sport in America. For Siesta Key resident Ken Scoggins, it’s also a sport that this former professional croquet instructor wanted to make accessible to everyone on Siesta Key. Scoggins, a lifelong tennis player, began playing pickleball about seven years ago. “About a year ago, I decided to start a Facebook page called Siesta Key Pickleball,” said Scoggins, a former track standout at the University of Oklahoma. “The courts needed repair and you really had to bring your own net.” So, Scoggins decided that he needed to find a way to encourage Sarasota County to make pickleball available to Siesta Key visitors and residents alike. “I hoped to get 100 people to sign on,” he said. Before long, more and more people were posting and following. To give the page a boost, Scoggins decided to let followers of the Pickleball Forum Facebook page know about the Siesta Key page. And, like a lightning-fast serve, it took off. “The county was watching,” Scoggins said. “They started saying to themselves, ‘We’ve got to do something.’” He was right -- the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department did do something. On Sept. 18, the county began to create six new pickleball courts from the existing tennis courts that face Beach Road, at the edge of the Siesta Beach parking lot. “The county gave up two of the four tennis courts and created six new pickleball courts on that space,” he said. Less than a month later, on Oct. 10, when the new courts opened, players discovered six newly resurfaced pickleball courts and two newly resurfaced tennis courts. All had pristine new nets. “The courts are good as new,” said Scoggins. Outdoor lighting was another bonus for players, making the courts available for play until 9 p.m. Meanwhile, as of mid-January the Siesta Key Pickleball page had 1,300 followers. The success and popularity of the page continues to amaze its creator. “I make sure that the page only has pickleball-related posts,” he said. “There are no ads here. That’s not what it’s about.” After taking a break from playing a recent match, Scoggins talked about the game, the players who flock to the new courts, and why it’s a sport that he’s convinced is here for the

long run. “Players at the Siesta Key courts are welcoming to each other,” Scoggins said.

Scoggins said that he’s happy to play with beginners and players of all levels. “I just play my soft/dink game,” he said. “I don’t coach unless they ask me to.” There are also many excellent players, he said, but emphasized his belief that no one should feel intimidated or not welcome at the courts. “Here, people just show up to play,” said Scoggins. “Those who want to have a competitive game can find it, but it’s also a welcoming place for those who are new to the game or play an intermediate game. You put your paddle down and meet new people. Pickleball is played casually here. You play to 11 points -- that’s a Sarasota County rule. It’s four people on and four people off. Each game runs about 20 minutes. It’s a friendly crowd.” Before relocating to Siesta Key in November 2022, Scoggins ran his own investment firm in Oklahoma and Texas. After stops in Seaside, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; and the Fort Myers area, he discovered Sarasota. “The arts and the beaches were a big draw along with golf and national croquet competitions,” he said. And although Scoggins played tennis for many years and excelled at it, the more inclusive sport of pickleball has become his go-to sport. And it’s catching on with people of all ages. “It’s an easy game to learn and it’s easy to improve as you keep playing,” Scoggins said. “The older crowd started it but it’s going strong with young people, too.” For example: On the Caravan PPA Tour, which is the global governing body of men’s and women’s professional pickleball, 16-yearold Florida resident Anna Leigh Waters is the youngest pickleball champion in history. Although pickleball is not currently an Olympic sport, there is strong speculation that it may one day be added to the games. As for Scoggins, playing pickleball on the courts of Siesta Key is about as good as it gets. He enjoys the social aspect of the game, the people that he meets, and the fun. “We’re bursting at the seams here already,” he said as he scanned the courts that were filled with players. “On a typical day we can have 57 people playing and waiting to get on the court.” They are people who are in a good mood, to boot. “I love Siesta Key. It’s a flip-flop kind of place,” Scoggins said. “How can you be angry and mad in Siesta Key? We’re here at the No. 1 beach in America.”

Sarasota County District 4 Commissioner Joe Neunder will be a guest speaker at a Feb. 25 event hosted by Midnight Pass Society II -- the group working to restore the tidal connection known as Midnight Pass that used to flow between Siesta Key and Casey Key. It was filled-in by the county in 1983. A gathering will be held Neunder at The Point restaurant, 135 Bayview Drive in Osprey, from noon to 4 p.m. and will feature updates on the project along with drink specials, a 50/50 raffle, and the selling of Midnight Pass-themed merchandise. In October, the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners voted to begin a feasibility study in support of restoring the waterway. At the Jan. 10 commissioners meeting, Neunder asked staff to present regular updates regarding the task.

FEBRUARY 2024 like crazy.” People flock in from all over the world – Ukrainians and eastern Europeans leading the way – and, of the Americans, Ohio is the most common home state, the owner reported. Robin Hood knows this because renters must submit a driver’s license and proof of age to take out a powered vehicle. While
state law allows 16-year-olds to drive a scooter or cart, Robin Hood limits rentals to 18 years old for a scooter, and 21 for a golf cart. “You have to protect the equipment – and the renter,” Toomey said. Road mishaps are rare – “People are mostly respectful,” he added. Sometimes, though, they are uninformed. Some ask if golf carts

are allowed on the beach, as they are elsewhere in the state. “We say very nicely, ‘Absolutely not,’” Toomey said. But bicycles, umbrellas, chairs, paddle boards and sunscreen are, and Robin Hood has them all for you. Reserve or learn more at robinhoodrentals.net, or call (941) 554-4242, or just drop in.

Robin Hood Rentals Continued from page 1V Two years later he found it. Opening the original shop down the road from its current location at 5255 Ocean Blvd., he rented segways – those self-balancing personal transportation devices popular in the early 2000s. Golf carts were next – Robin Hood takes credit as the Key’s first place to rent them – and the rest just started happening. Today, between Siesta Key and a second shop on Anna Maria Island, Robin Hood has about 185 golf carts, 40 scooters, more than 300 bicycles, 40 kayaks, and 38 scoot coupes. A scoot coupe is a threewheeled, two-person moped that looks like a souped-up version of the foot-propelling toy “car” your parents might have bought you when you were 2 or 3. Brightly colored, they’re a convenient and fun way of getting around a beach town like Siesta Key. They’re popular at Robin Hood. Perhaps not as much as golf carts. Their use has exploded on Siesta Key in recent years, Toomey said, because “People would rather Uber from the airport and then rent a cart rather than rent a car for the week.” Robin Hood cart rentals come with free parking in the Village for dining or shopping.
No longer for rent are electric bikes (the county banned them for beach use; “people used to drive them into the water,” Toomey said) or water skis (they didn’t catch on.) A chilly, damp month like southwest Florida has recently experienced might seem to be a downer for business, but Toomey said the mix just switches. When the weather turns bad, he explained on a recent such day, “Retail sales go through the roof. With this cold weather, I am selling hoodies and sweatshirts

Royal tern (Thalasseus maximus)
that stay on the gulf coast yearround give us a glimpse into their fascinating courtship rituals. The male serenades his intended while presenting her with a small fish, crab, or shrimp. His raised crest and deep bow in her direction seal the deal — all without a prenup! Once paired, the two walk tight circles together in do-si-do fashion. Then, they strut side-by-side through the colony to announce their nuptials. Their abode is modest: a small, unlined depression in the sand just big enough for one or two eggs which will hatch about a month later.

With at least 17 species of terns in North America, it can be a challenge telling them apart since most don the familiar white, gray, and black plumage along with pointed bills and pointed wings However, their sizes aids with identification. The 19-inch long royal tern is bested only by its behemoth cousin, the 21-inch Caspian tern. No matter the size, terns are known for their quick and agile aerial maneuvers while hunting over coastlines and open waters. Migratory royals enjoy wintering on Siesta Key’s beaches after the long commute from breeding grounds along the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts. The royals

“Then, I give the person a call when it comes in. They are often blown away.” Shells, gifts, T-shirts, beach cover-up dresses, bathing suits, toys, hats, jewelry, home decor, beach supplies, candy. That’s just a few of the categories represented at the store, now in its 27th year on Siesta Key. A dedicated, seasoned group of employees might explain the commitment to all things … well, everything. “They are the nicest people I’ve ever worked with,” said Puma, who first started with the company in 2016 and became the Siesta Key manager in 2019. “It took a few years to get this group. They know what they’re doing and don’t need to be told. I took a vacation in December and I didn’t worry about this store once. Not many managers can say that.” A laid-back managerial approach helps as well. That is key during those inventory endeavors. “Everyone is older than 50,” Puma said. “I don’t expect them to sprint or run marathons. I don’t push them – there’s no pressure and they operate with their own timing.” And as a result, friendliness is in the air. “We have visitors every year who remember the names of our employees and ask about them,” Puma said. “Many of our customers came here as kids and are now bringing their kids. “We play 70s and 80s music and a person can barely get in the door before we say hello. We get people who browse here as long as an
hour and a half. They feel comfortable. They feel welcome. “The store is well-lit, the aisles are wide, and it’s wheelchair accessible. It’s a store for everyone.” That employee dedication was reinforced when owners Susan and Nathan Faria paid the workers during a five-week span during the pandemic when the store was closed. “They all came back,” Puma said of the employees. “The dedication here starts from the top.” Susan Faria inherited the business from her father, the late Ken Agerskov. According to Puma, he created 45 stores up and down Florida’s west coast that featured only shells. He would close most of them, and now five are left -- beyond Siesta Key, three are on Anna Maria Island and one is in St. Pete. All have the same philosophy: “I was told when I was hired that I should put an emphasis on making a good living for my family but never gouge the customer,” Puma said. “The owners said there are families that save all year to take a vacation here. They should be able to take home a souvenir.” Finally, is the big pirate out front for sale? “I call him Jack. He’s been here since Day 1, I believe,” Puma said. “At one point he had a price but now I understand he can’t be replaced. And, people like to take pictures with him. So, he’s here to stay. We’re not selling him.”
