On this cruise, you just can’t lose Cruisin’Tikis outings pack a punch of big fun on Siesta Key’s local waterways By Ned Steele
C
ruisin’ Tikis is the most fun per square foot you’ll ever have on the water. Barely a speck next to the gleaming yachts and large party boats on Sarasota Bay and just 16 feet across, it’s like the cozy cottage amid the row of mansions. The comfy family sedan cruising alongside the big SUVs. And when you charter her for a few hours with Capt. Bill Hogan at the helm, “The boat is yours,” says his business and life partner Marcia Bishop. Meaning, you’ll set the plan – sunset cruise, brunch cruise, sandbar-and-swim excursion, wherever in the bay you’d like. There is no fixed route. And, if you happen to have your own dock, Capt. Bill will pick you up there.
Capt. Bill Hogan and Marcia Bishop are all smiles on their beloved Tuff Tiki watercraft. (photo by Ned Steele)
Basically a compact, floating tiki bar, Cruisin’ Tikis is an intimate, private charter experience. You set out with your chosen loved ones or besties – as long as they’re older than the age of 10, and there’s no more than six of them. They don’t even have to be human. Hogan and Bishop will welcome your canine companion. Cruisin’ Tikis is a national franchise, and the partners have owned the Sarasota Bay location for two years. They’re reformed landlubbers -- he ran a convenience store; she worked part time in a golf club. They’ve fully renovated the vessel, which they named Tuff Tiki after it survived two hurricanes. Despite their slogan, (“Why go bar hopping, when you can hop on a bar?) this is not a “booze cruise.”
Cruisin’ Tikis is strictly BYOB and, if you overindulge, Capt. Bill will “86” you. (It’s only happened once.) That said, you are encouraged to bring anything you can drink responsibly. Food? Bring whatever you’d like. Pizza and wings are the most popular, but anything goes. Once a group of Philadelphians boarded with cheesesteaks flown in that morning from their home town. Music? Bring your playlist. Who does a Cruisin’ Tiki charter, and why? Bachelorette parties lead the list -- about 75 of them a year. Then there’s birthdays, anniversaries, and family gatherings. Twice in two years, the Tuff Tiki has been the site of a marriage proposal. Continued on page 14V
Doing good while looking great Part of Silver City’s beach-themed jewelry collection supports Mote Marine research By Jane Bartnett “Who doesn’t cherish the beauty of our gulf waters?” says Monica Galfre, owner of Silver City Sarasota jewelry in Southbridge Mall. When the devastating red tide bloom came ashore in 2018, Galfre wanted to find a way to support Mote Marine Laboratory’s research efforts and increase awareness. “Silver City is only blocks away from the beach and we were very aware of this terrible event. Red tide impacted everyone
on Siesta Key,” she said. “I got my team together and we designed the first item in our Tide Away collection. In 2019, we began selling our Tide Away stainless-steel keychain and donating 25% from the sale of each item” to Mote. “I’m proud to report that in the five years that we’ve been selling our Tide Away collection that has grown to include a total of nine popular items, Silver City has donated over $9,000 to Mote,” Galfre added.
The success of the original Tide Away keychain that depicts a frolicking dolphin, manatee, and sea turtle in the water led Galfre decided to design more items and create a full line. She soon trademarked “Tide Away Save Our Beaches.” The collection now includes two different bracelets, earrings, a Tide Away pendant, a blue-green bead, a gift set, and a blue-green Continued on page 11V

Arts on the Horizon By Rodger Skidmore Dip your toe in the river
The Mississippi River is 2,340 miles long. But this river is not a single body of water, it is a medley of 7,000 different streams that have joined together to make a mighty waterway. In the same way, music is not just one thing, it too is made up of many, many streams. And, for each stream, there are a variety of sailors that use their paddles to guide us along, shifting through the water, blending one stream into another, making each a stronger, larger flow. Gershwin, Stravinsky, Little Richard, Mozart, Taylor Swift, Ned Rorem: Each is also a compendium of influences that, throughout their careers, have added their own textures and substance to the river of music. Just as streams are made of the confluence of creeks, brooks, and rivulets, so too are composers made of their specific series of influences. In the case of Ned Rorem, his first enthusiasm was for Debussy and Ravel (yes, they were the influencers of their day) who were soon followed by Igor Stravinsky, Billie Holiday and Edvard Grieg. In college Rorem studied under Gian Carlo Menotti and in his first job worked for the composer Virgil Thomson. Thompson introduced him to Bernstein and Copland, who became his life-long friends. Winning the Gershwin Prize provided Rorem with enough money (his parents had cut him off after he quit the Curtis Institute of Music) to
live and compose in Morocco for two years. Don’t worry, Rorem did get a bachelors and masters from Juilliard. Besides writing ballets, concertos, symphonies, and operas (one was Our Town based on Thornton Wilder’s play) Rorem wrote more than 500 art songs, for which he is most remembered. Centenary celebrations for him have recently been held at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the New York Festival of Song, and at Baylor, Vanderbilt and Purdue Universities, etc. And, why not, even in Waco, Texas. But more important, Ned Rorem’s Centenary: Celebrating His Life in Music and Words is being held at St. Boniface Episcopal Church on Siesta Key, the evening of March 8. And it is his art songs that will be the focal point with Tom Meglioranza interweaving his baritone voice with the piano tones of Marisa Gupta, forming a small tribute-tary of musical beauty that will, in turn, influence our love of music to some degree, just as ripples on a pond inflict their quarks of pressure upon the furthest shore. You can catch Max Tan, who curates the Listen Hear Salon Concert Series of which the Rorem concert is a part, along with Ms. Gupta, at their Carnegie Hall debut on April 3. Or, if you wish, hear the same concert at St. Boniface on Siesta Key on March 20, at a preview performance. Tan and Gupta will be performing Strauss’s Violin Sonata, Ysaÿe’s Sonata No. 3 for solo violin, Stravinsky’s Divertimento and Three Romances by Schumann (Clara). More info at Soundboxventures.org.
No more gladiators
That’s right, in case you haven’t heard, gladiators are no longer fighting lions, or each other, in Rome. And, one by one, a number of cities have been banning bull fighting. But Hollywood still makes movies about those strong Roman men, glistening with sweat, fighting lions for the glory of … the glory of not being eaten by a lion? And the opera world highlights the beauty of … not the killing of bulls (and occasional matadors), but the beauty of the face and voice of the opera stars that sing about the world of bull fighting – specifically, as seen and heard in the opera Carmen.. In 1875, when Carmen was first performed, it shocked and scandalized the audience members (they went anyway) as it depicted, in an immoral and lawless way, the tragic death of the main character, a woman. In today’s overly analyzed world, we would consider Carmen to be someone who is not looking out for her own self interests. Really,
Three-leaf clovers are also lucky
falling in love with a sports figure (Escamilo, a glamorous toreador who probably won’t age well and will turn to fat) and dumping the drunken guy who pays her bar tab (and has a really bad temper) is short-sighted in the extreme. Ah, but her voice, her face, her long legs and eyelashes. Everyone loves Carmen, her in-your-face attitude, and Bizet’s music. But enough about a woman being killed (even if it was for love). The Sarasota Opera is also putting on multiple performances of Lucia Di Lammermoor, about a mad woman who kills her husband on their wedding night (hey, he probably deserved it, right?). But Lucia does not kill her true love (who she believes has jilted her) -- instead, he kills himself. Life and love are hard, but the music of Donizetti is sublime. Verdi’s opera of the season is Luisa Miller, and is very peaceful. Peaceful, that is, after just about everyone dies. The two lovers, who truly love each other, but kind of betray each other, die, leaving Luisa’s old father to live alone with no one to take care of him. So, kind of tragic. But, on the bright side, everyone who dies, is betrayed, or betrays someone, does so to the music of Giuseppe Verdi. Deceit Outwitted (a Sarasota Opera premiere) is a different kind of opera (ha ha). Yes, it is still full of deceit and anger (a father is forcing his daughter to marry someone other than her one true love) but, get this, no one dies. Instead, there is funny deceit, in the style of The Marriage of Figaro. These four operas are performed on alternate days through March 24. More info is available at Sarasotaopera.org.
And why not, it’s the Luck of the Irish at Holley Hall on March 6 through 10, so you can get in the mood for the big day on the 17th. This Sarasota Orchestra’s Great Escapes concert for March will keep your toes tapping with spritely tunes by Leroy Anderson (The Girl I Left Behind Me and The Wearing of the Green), Percy Grainger’s Shepherd’s Hey and his famous Irish Tune from County Derry (you might know it by its other name, Danny Boy). There will be lots of other Irish tunes, so wear your finest greens. The orchestra’s Masterworks concert goes from March 14 through 17 and celebrates the centenary of the writing of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. One could say there were four authors of this 100-year-old tune. The band leader Paul Whiteman talked Gershwin into writing this piece for piano and orchestra, Gershwin wrote the basic melody and its overall structure, Ferde Grofé (Whiteman’s arranger) orchestrated the concerto for the instruments in Whiteman’s band, and Ross Gorman took Gershwin’s suggestion of a clarinet trill and improvised the world-famous opening glissando during a rehearsal. Michelle Cann will be at the piano for Rhapsody in Blue and for Florence Price’s Piano Concerto. Rounding out the program will be compositions by Rossini and Tchaikovsky. A one-day-only Classics for Wind and Brass will be at Holley Hall on March 21 with wind and brass quintets. More info available for all at Sarasotaorchestra.org.

rout and redfish should be good shallow-water options this month. You may also find trout along with blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and flounder on deep-grass flats. Look for sheepshead, flounder, reds and more around docks. Catch-and-release night snook fishing around lighted docks in the Intracoastal Waterway may also be a good option if it’s not too cold. Since snook are temperature sensitive, I won’t target them following strong fronts when water temperatures dip below 60 degrees. However, I have had some great night trips catching and releasing snook on flies in the Intracoastal Waterway at night this time of year. Since larger baitfish aren’t that plentiful this time of year, snook will gorge themselves on glass minnows and shrimp. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, DOA Shrimp (3 inches or the newer 2-3/4 inches), DOA Tiny TerrorEyz or CAL Jigs with shad tails, and jerk worms will all work well. You may also find snook in rivers, creeks or canals this month. Fishing may be good in these areas on a blustery day when it isn’t fit to fish anywhere else. I like wider profile flies and lures in these areas due to the baitfish that may be found there. Fly anglers should score with wide profile baitfish patterns, such as Lefty’s Deceiver, fished on a sink-tip fly line. Spin anglers should do well with CAL jigs and 4-inch swim baits and jerk worms, DOA Baitbusters or suspending plugs. Fish the deep spots, usually on outside bends, for the best action. You might find reds in potholes or along the edges of bars and shallow flats when the
tide is low. As the tide rises, they will feed higher on shallow flats, particularly on sunny afternoons. I like 1/16-ounce CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms for reds in shallow water. If it is too shallow or grassy to fish an exposed hook, a Mustad or Owner weedless hook will allow you to fish plastic baits in these areas. Fly anglers should score with lightly weighted flies, like Clousers or my Grassett Flats Minnow, with weed guards on floating lines with 10- to 12-foot leaders. You may also find big trout in skinny water in the same places you find reds. The same lures, flies and techniques that you use to target reds will work for big trout in those areas. Spotted seatrout regulations have changed in southwest Florida to a three-fish-per-person bag limit and a six-fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15 to 19 niches with one allowed per vessel larger than 19 inches. You’ll also find trout on deep-grass flats. I like flats that have a good mix of grass and sand and good tidal flow. Flats that are close to passes are often good choices since water temperatures may be warmer there. Following fronts, silted up water will cover deep grass flats close to passes, often affecting fishing in those areas. Other good grass flats may be on points or around bars. I like to drift and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and a variety of plastic tails, DOA Deadly Combos or weighted flies on sink tip fly lines to locate trout. Once you’ve located them you can shorten your drift or anchor on them. In addition to trout, you may also find blues, Spanish mackerel, flounder or pompano, depending on water temperature and conditions, on deep grass flats. The technique to find them is the same as for trout, although there may be other clues. Pompano may “skip”
on the surface when you drift or run past them giving their presence away. When that happens, set up a drift upwind of where you saw a pompano and cast ahead of your drift. Blues and Spanish mackerel may force bait out of the water or feed on the surface. You may need to add heavy fluorocarbon or wire when blues and mackerel are mixed with trout on deep grass flats. Fishing docks is another good option this time of year, especially when the tide is low. You might find reds, sheepshead or flounder under docks. I like docks that are deep (3 feet or more) and have a good tidal flow. Fish the end of long piers to find the deepest water. Also, look for big boats moored on docks or on boat lifts, which is also an indication of deeper water. Older docks with lots of barnacle and oyster growth usually hold more baitfish and predators. I like CAL jigs with shad tails, grubs or jerk worms or weighted flies fished on sink tip fly lines when fishing docks. Be sure to let your jig or fly get down close to the bottom. There may be some action in the coastal gulf by the end of the month with Spanish mackerel and cobia. When the water warms to the high 60s to low 70s, these fish will move into our area from the south as they migrate north. Look for Spanish mackerel on the surface or in passes. Cobia may be swimming on the surface, around buoys, channel markers and crab trap floats or over structure. Tripletail may also be an option during warm ups in the coastal gulf. This can be a tough month to fish. With frequent fronts and cool water, fish aren’t always in an eating mood. If you’re able to pick good tides combined with favorable weather conditions, you should be successful. If you don’t have that luxury, you might do better by sleeping in and fishing later in the day when it’s warmer.

wave pendant that reads “Save our Beaches.” All are made from stainless steel. A colorful tote bag with “Tide Away, Save Our Beaches” inscribed upon it completes the collection. Tide Away items begin at $20 for the keychain. The gift set retails for $99. All nine items are sold exclusively at Silver City. The white sand and blue-green waters of Siesta Key have also Galfre inspired Galfre to create two other Silver City exclusive designs: The White Sand Siesta Key Jewelry Collection features pendants, rings, earrings, and bracelets that contain the white sand of Siesta Key, accented with abalone shell in an epoxy enamel. Each unique design is created by Silver City’s own silversmith and no two are alike. Prices for the White Sand Siesta Key Jewelry Collection begin at $49.99. The trademarked Watercolor Gemstone collection may be Silver City’s most iconic and well-known treasure. Made from Siesta Key’s white quartz sand infused with blue-green quartz, the gemstone designs are set in either sterling silver or 14K white or yellow gold. There are close to 200 designs in bracelets, earrings, pendants, and rings that begin at $89. Watercolor Gemstone jewelry set in 14K gold begins at $199. The sun pendant, according to Galfre, is the most popular item in the line. Capturing the unique and tropical beauty of Siesta Key has been Galfre’s driving force since she opened Silver City Sarasota in October 2005. Creating customized designs for clients is also a special interest. Preserving Siesta Key’s beaches and marine life, she believes, requires everyone’s support. Silver City Sarasota is located at 6539 Midnight Pass Rd. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Sundays. For more information, visit silvercitysarasota.com or call the store at (941) 349-5030.

Wood stork
(Mycteria americana) This large, American wading bird is sometimes misnamed the wood ibis because its bill resembles that of the smaller and unrelated ibis. The wood stork is the only stork with permanent breeding colonies in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Otherwise, they migrate to and from Central and South America. Siesta Key is fortunate to see this stork transiting before and after foraging in the Key’s estuaries, mangroves, and canals, or on the mainland. Usually seen before being heard, the adults are very quiet — uttering only low croaks or hissing sounds. Stork babies, on the other hand, are quite vociferous as they compete with one another for food and nest space — typical sibling rivalry! Full grown, these twins will stand almost 4 feet tall and weigh nearly 6 pounds apiece. With a 6-foot wingspan, the wood stork may ride and glide on thermals as high as 2,000 feet overhead for a truly exceptional view of our gulf paradise. Jan Baumgartner’s handmade notecards are available at Sunshine & Sand Hidden Treasures, 6635 Midnight Pass Rd., in Crescent Plaza.

Although they operate out of Hart’s Landing, Siesta Key is vital to the experience. Their most popular trip is the sunset cruise at Big Pass. Often, they’ll cruise the canals off the Intracoastal Waterway, or pick up passengers at Bay Island’s Nora Patterson Park. Though they live on the mainland, Hogan said “Siesta Key is why we’re here.” (The couple formerly lived on the Jersey Shore.) Cruisin’ Tikis will take you anywhere the boat can navigate, chugging along at up to 7 mph, powered by a 30-horsepower Suzuki. And you might well see a dolphin or a manatee. (Sorry, no venturing into the Gulf.) The most touching request Hogan and Bishop have granted? An elderly resident of a retirement home asked them to sweep across the bay for a final look at the house on Bird Key he had lived in. If you’re not sure where to go or what to do, Bishop will help you plan a theme and route, and otherwise create a memorable experience. Prices are reasonable: $200 to $600, depending on length and number of passengers. It’s a winning formula. Much of their business is repeat; some customers book several cruises a year. It’s become what Hogan and Bishop call their “tiki family.” One of them is Lynn Odegard, who with her husband recently took their four children out on the bay as their Christmas gift. They can’t decide what’s their next cruise -- their daughter’s 16th
birthday in May, or spring break with the visiting relatives. “We’ve been here 20 years,” Odegard enthused. “This is the most fun we’ve ever had on the water.” Perhaps the best endorsement of all came from a caller who demanded to book a cruise immediately. Told the boat was out on a cruise, the caller replied “I know. I’m on a big party boat right next to you. Can I get off it and jump onto yours?” “Nobody,” Bishop said, “leaves unhappy.” Book your cruise by calling (941) 253-5404, online at CruisinTikisSarasota.com, or email the business for info at Info@ CruisinTikisSarasota.com.

Sandy the Snowman?
Some visitors to Siesta Beach decided to remind themselves of what was going on back at home in the north with the creation of this “sandman” sculpture. (photo by Ned Steele)
