That was back in 1993, when they were further encouraged by one of Ethel’s real estate brokers telling them that there was a new phenomenon in real estate where husbands and wives worked together as teams selling real estate. They decided to check it out and agreed to visit the east coast of Florida, but once there they decided against settling in that area. Undeterred, they opted to drive across Hwy 72
that night and unknowingly drove straight on to Siesta Key. They spent the night, walked the beach in the morning and fell in love with their surroundings. Without hesitation they sold their house in Michigan, moved to Sarasota and found a place to live and work all within thirty days. As Harvey and Ethel continue to point out to their customers, “If you live in a great location of beauty and entertainment, you will live a happy life.â€? Looking back over the past year, we feel we’ve achieved a whole “lotta stuff. At the time, the economy was uncertain at best; the real estate market had been plunging faster than a falling knife, many folks were paralyzed from fear as they watched their retirement funds being decimated and the only thing climbing at a steady pace was the jobless rate. We didn’t know whether the economy was on the mend or if more pain was yet to come. With all those factors working against us it seemed imprudent to purchase any type of business, let alone one that many felt was on the decline. But my husband, never one to shy away from a challenge, saw it as an opportunity and zeroed in on a niche product that would, with some tweaking, be able to weather the storm. Now, with over a year under our belt, we’re certainly not out of the woods yet and we still have lots of work ahead of us. We feel blessed that many businesses have supported our efforts in the quarterly updates to the paper and provided suggestions. It’s never easy getting a consensus on anything, so we gratefully accepted all ideas and comments and incorporated some of the valuable feedback to improve our product. As a result of our many months of collaboration, we’re starting off, 2012, with a new section. Our original Siesta Key’s Island Visitor will continue providing visitors with information about the businesses on and around the island and, as of January, it will be supplemented with a new section, Island Visitor’s Siesta Sand, which will be printed on a monthly basis and will provide both locals and visitors with more of the island
happenings along with a few other additions. With Siesta Key coveting the spot for the nation’s #1 beach in 2011, it seemed appropriate to name this section of our publication after the “stuffâ€? that makes Siesta Key special. After all, it is all about the sand, isn’t it? As for what our outlook is on the economy today for businesses? Well, it’s hard to know from week to week what the bureaucrats in Washington are doing to get us back on track. What we have seen are some of the lowest home prices since 2000 coupled with historically low interest rates. In our mind, that makes for some serious bargain hunting. So, we’re dedicating our front page to real estate. Have a look at the section on what $250,000 can buy on Siesta Key. <RX PD\ Ă€QG WKDW RZQLQJ D SLHFH RI SDUDGLVH is closer to reality than you think. :KHWKHU LW¡V \RXU Ă€UVW WLPH WR 7KH .H\ frequent visitor or island resident, we hope you enjoy our new section. Sarasota Waters
|Dolphins putting on free watery shows nearshore By Paul Roat... Cetaceans are moving around both near and far, providing a wonderful chance for us land-based mammals to get an up-close-andpersonal view of our water-based brethren. In the Sarasota Bay area, dolphins are drifting from the bays to passes and the nearshore Gulf of Mexico in search of food. Bull sharks, a predator of young dolphins, move away from the coast during winter months, allowing the Gulf and inlets to be relatively safe for young dolphins. Go to any beach or pass near Siesta Key to catch the free dolphin show this time of year.
‘Our’ dolphins and red tide
The Sarasota Bay area is home to the longestrunning wild dolphin research program in the world. The study began with Randy Wells in 1970. A Riverview High School student and Siesta Key native, young Wells teamed up with Ă HGJOLQJ 0RWH 0DULQH /DERUDWRU\ WR FDWDORJXH and study dolphins in the area. There are about 150 resident marine mammals in the DUHD VWXGLHG IRU PRUH WKDQ Ă€YH JHQHUDWLRQV and as Wells writes, “Over the years, we have created a unique situation for learning about the needs of coastal dolphins in the wild through understanding them as individuals and following them throughout their lives. “As we learn what it takes for coastal
dolphins to be able to survive and thrive, we improve our ability to evaluate how expanding human activities in coastal ecosystems may impact their lives, and what approaches may be most effective for keeping them and their populations healthy, while at the same time allowing humans to use and enjoy coastal waters.â€? One of the greatest threats to dolphins and humans is red tide. The 2005 severe outbreak of Karenia brevis, a micro-plant that at times blooms and releases a toxin, proved irritating to humans and deadly to dolphins. Red tide is indirectly deadly to dolphins, Wells and his research team discovered. ´/RFDO GROSKLQV GLG not die directly from the toxin during the 2005 severe red tide,â€? Wells has said.
“However, dramatic and unsustainable increases in dolphin deaths from attempts at stealing bait and catch from recreational anglers
that entangled both dolphins and other marine creatures, often fatally. 6XUYH\V RI Ă€VKHUV LQGLFDWHG SHUFHQW RI the 400 polled had seen marine creatures with PRQRĂ€ODPHQW OLQH HQWDQJOHPHQW SUREOHPV and 53 percent had dolphins steal their catch. Wells continued, “supporting our hypothesis about the role of red tide as a driver of this issue at least in the Sarasota area, a new study indicates that some dolphins continue to show interest in bait and catch. This interest appears likely to have been reinforced by angler behavior, such as feeding and releasing catch near dolphins.â€? Charter Capt. |Muscle Ranked #1 By Research Center on Aging! In perhaps the most important research ever done on human vitality, Doctors at Tuft’s Universities USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging ranked their top 10 most important factors (called Biomarkers) in altering vitality. Number one at the top of their vitality list is muscle mass! They feel so strongly about the importance of muscle and subsequent health consequences of losing muscle they coined a term for the condition called “sarcopeniaâ€?. Sarcopenia is a Greek term, ´VDUFRÂľ PHDQLQJ Ă HVK PXVFOH DQG “peniaâ€? meaning reduction. Their research concluded that after age 30 the average person loses 7 lbs of muscle and gains 10 lbs of body fat per decade. Furthermore their research concludes that the loss of muscle is what causes the body to gain fat. Here’s how it works; as people exit their

Cleary the main point of the Tuft’s Doc’s book “Biomarkersâ€? is to encourage everyone to understand that this fat gain caused by loss of muscle is something we all have the ability to alter, AT ANY AGE! They state that “the loss of muscle in the body is absolutely reversible and largely preventableâ€?. They proved this claim by putting their 60-72 year old subjects through a supervised weight training program for three months, and found that muscle strength of ALL subjects increased by a minimum of 200% and muscle mass increased by a minimum of 10%. Now, personally speaking, having been in this profession for 30 years‌ I can tell you with 100% certainty that these Doc’s have hit

This inactivity in turn causes a loss of valuable muscle tissue. What most people don’t know is that muscle tissue is the single largest contributing factor in determining the speed of your metabolism, so as you lose muscle, your metabolism slows! As your metabolism slows you gain body fat. In turn it is this gain of body fat that

|Portrait Art and More By Bob Stein... S Shawn McLoughlin is a Siesta Key visual artist that has been painting local portraits, beachscapes and murals for nearly 30 years. I sat with him lo rrecently to ask about his beginnings, what he’s currently doing and what eexcites him about the future.
Q: What kept you here after graduating from the Ringling College of Art and Design in 1975? A: Many factors. I married during my senior year and within a few years we had two sons. During that time, I was gaining experience in advertising and design and we never considered moving. Q: At what point did you start your painting career? A: I began working as a catalog designer and technical illustrator for Sun Hydraulics in 1982. For my wife’s Christmas, I drew illustrations of my young sons. The engineers that worked around me started having me paint their children from their photos. Within months, I left to pursue a career in portrait painting. Q: Were you able to make a living? A: In the beginning years, I did lots of portraits from photos given to me by customers. Within a few years, I was traveling to other states, painting portraits of prominent families as well as building a solid reputation in Sarasota and receiving many notable local commissions. Q: Did that continue? A: Yes. In 1996, I narrowed my commissioned portraits to children, caught in candid play on the beach. I opened a small watercolor gallery in Captain Curt’s Plaza. I loved those years and had lots of fun. I also offered very affordable art prints of beachscapes and paintings of beach resorts. Q: It sounds like an artist’s dream. A: It really was a wonderful life. In 2001, after nearly 17 years of portrait painting, I wanted to sell real estate on Siesta Key. It was great for many years but then came to an end. The real estate market was in turmoil. I decided to go back into painting, after a seven year hiatus. In 2008, I reopened a new gallery in Captain Curt’s Plaza.
Q: How did that go? A: Very well. I began experimenting with digital art using the computer with SKRWRJUDSK\ , SXUFKDVHG P\ ÀUVW ODUJH format printer at that time. I realized there wasn’t enough room in the gallery, so after 18 months I chose to work at home, in my large, well-equipped studio. Q: And how is that going? oA: I am very excited to now offer PhotoArt Portraits that have the look and feel of a d traditionally painted portrait. I have combined my painting abilities with my photographicc skills to create beautiful and affordable portraits that will last for generations. , DOVR RIIHU ÀQH TXDOLW\ DUW SULQWV RI P\ most popular paintings on lightweight foam board panels in standard sizes. Q: How much do they cost? A: My Photo-Art Portraits begin at $200 for a 16” x 20” canvas, and 8 x 10 art prints, ready to display or hang, are only $12.99.

more? Q: Do you still paint in watercolor or oil anymore? milies A: Yes, I paint portraits of individuals and families by commission. I also paint for gallery shows and exhibitions. 4 +RZ FDQ SHRSOH ÀQG \RX DQG YLHZ \RXU ZRUN" A: People can contact me and view my work online at www.SiestaShawn.com. My art prints are available at a few local retail stores. Beach Bazaar, in the Siesta Key Village, has a display that holds nearly 50 different art prints. Crescent Beach Grocery, near the Stickney Point Bridge, also carries a wide selection of my best prints, as does Captain Curt’s gift shop.

“Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee
Š2011, St. Martin’s Press $24.99 / $28.99 Canada 356 pages Your dog can’t talk. But you know exactly what he wants. One woof means “out.â€? A different grumble means he wants a treat. A certain look means “scratch my belly.â€? Sure, he may not carry on a conversation with you, but he communicates just the same and he gets you to do his bidding. One of you is very well-trained. Because of that, despite what scientists say, it’s hard not to attribute human qualities to animals that share your home. But you’ll never look at your dog again in the same way, once you’ve read “Emily and Einsteinâ€?, the new novel by Linda Francis Lee. I really enjoyed the way author Linda Francis Lee leads her readers with observations through the eyes of a small, fuzzy, accidentallyquadrupedal man, and the way she envisions his spiritual life is just perfect. Lee was so good at creating Einstein, in fact, that you shouldn’t be surprised if your mind is drawn to your own pet and his human-like characteristics: what, exactly, is going on behind those liquid “Pet Meâ€? eyes? y

Sarasota History Author: Mark D. Smith, former County Archivist Courtesy of the Sarasota County History Center. As Sarasota County begins the New Year, a look back 57 years provides an interesting peek into the daily routines of the county and its residents. Some issues sound very familiar today; others show the march of progress. Still others sound a little strange, but made the news of the day in January, 1955. The month started with an unusual occurrence in the Gulf of Mexico. An investigation began into a report of blasting being done by three unknown men about 3/4 of mile of Midnight Pass on New Year’s Day. The underwater dynamiting was believed to be part of a reported resumption of exploration for oil off the coast of Florida. Captain Willis McCormack, of the Midnight Pass Fishing Camp, reported having been approached by three men requesting to rent his boat. He refused when he learned they wanted to drop dynamite charges. Another news item was a battle involving Main Street in downtown Sarasota. The City passed a resolution stating that the Memorial Oaks, planted along Main Street as a memorial to Sarasota’s WWI veterans, had to go as Main Street was developing into a major shopping center. Within a few days several residents began a campaign to save the trees. A committee was formed that included noted architect William Zimmerman. In the January 10, 1955 issue of The News, Zimmerman complained that the board was doing no real planning but spending its time “looking at plats, streets widths and turnarounds. Zimmerman asserted, “We should do some real planning for the city. Calling attention to fast-moving developments in the city, Zimmerman said, “there is the question of trees. Are we going to have trees in our business district as do the beautiful cities of South America and Europe or are we going to let an asphalt jungle develop here? Although these discussions would continue, the winter season was beginning in Sarasota County and other stories were developing. Residents and visitors looked forward to the opening of the Sarasota County Fair on January 17, 1955. Forty thousand people were expected to attend the fair during its six-day run. Also, the Second Annual Venice Community Fair, sponsored by the Lion’s Club, was held at Washburne Field in Venice later that same month. Two of Sarasota’s premier hotels announced their season openings. The John Ringling Hotel announced that it would open for its 18th season, and its manager, John J. Carr, invited the public to meet the staff and view the newly decorated dining rooms. The Mira Mar Hotel announced the opening of the Castillian Room for the season as part of the hotel’s “New Look.
On the business front, Sarasota Springs Subdivision, located off Bee Ridge Road, opened with homes starting at $6,995 with lots selling for $695 or $10 a month. Sarasota Federal Bank announced that they would pay 3 percent on new savings accounts, and property values rose 10 percent in the county in 1954. |Colors of Siesta Key...
By Cheryl Gaddie
The eclectic styles and array of colors for our private residences and various condominiums contribute to Siesta Key’s charming appeal. One of the first areas we evaluate when wanting to give our home, neighborhood or condominium a new look is freshening up with paint. Although there are only a few codes or rules that monitor color choices on private homes, should personal preference be your only consideration?

The only need to refresh the exterior of this Siesta Key home was to accentuate the details with a complimentary trim. It is always important to have the exact hue and saturation. It can be the difference in making a house look like a box or a well-planned architectural structure. Before you enhance your home with color, take all aspects of architecture and design into consideration. If you choose not to consult with a professional, it is simple to access information online. There is a plethora of websites with good advice available.
Home owners use different approaches when choosing colors for the exteriors of their homes. Mr. Hani Rihan chose to paint his home after purchasing it in 2004. |Harvey & Ethel Lovelace...
Often the color choice has a reason. This home in Siesta Isles was painted in 2009 when the owner decided to put it up for sale. With the challenges of sales in our real estate market the past few years, strong curb appeal is essential to attract the drive-by potential customer. During

And yet, the Lovelace’s consider the attitude of the community to be Sarasota’s best attribute. “As a whole, the community embraces all economic and social lifestyles and there is something for everybody here. Just take a look at the real estate market at current levels. You may still be able to pick up a little island get-away for around $250,000.â€? Looking back Harvey and Ethel feel they chose wisely, 18 years ago, when they abruptly uprooted their lives in the Midwest to move to Siesta Key. A A husband and wife were dining out together when the wife noticed that her husband kept staring at an attractive woman who was sitting at the bar throwing back drink after drink. “Do you know that woman?â€? she asked. “Yes,â€? replied her husband. “She’s an ex-girlfriend. She started drinking after we broke up, and i t appears she hasn’t been sober since.â€? “Good heavens!â€? exclaimed his wife. “Who’d have thought a person could celebrate for that long?â€? A A couple of friends were playing golf together one afternoon when one noticed that the other had been standing over his tee shot on the 450yard 18th hole for what seemed like an eternity. The man adjusted his position again. Finally his exasperated partner asked, “What in the world is taking you so long?â€? “My wife is watching me from the clubhouse balcony,â€? the man explained. “I want to make a perfect shot.â€? “You’re wasting your time,â€? his friend replied. You don’t have a chance in heck of hitting her from here.â€? A A woman calls her priest in a frantic voice and says, “Father, I inherited two parrots and every time they see someone they blurt out, ‘Hey, wanna have some fun?’ It’s really quite embarrassing and I don’t know what to do.â€? “Well,â€? says the priest, “why not bring them down to the rectory. I have a parrot myself that I’ve taught to pray. In fact, he prays continuously and he even says the rosary every day. Why not bring your parrots here and I am sure my parrot can help them overcome this problem.â€? Upon hearing that the woman calmed down and brought the parrots to the rectory the next day. As soon as the woman’s parrots spotted the other parrot they blurt out, “Hey, wanna have some fun?â€? A Three old retired guys are walking down a side street on Siesta Key when they spot a sign that says, “Old Timers Bar – ALL drinks 10 centsâ€?. They look at each other and then go in thinking this is too good to be true. The old bartender invites them in and asks them what they would like to drink. There seems to be a fully- stocked bar, so each of the men orders a martini. In short order, the bartender serves up four iced martinis‌shaken, not stirred, and says, “That’ll be 10 cents each, please.â€? The three men stare at the bartender for a moment then look at each other. They can’t believe their good fortune. They pay the 40 cents, finish their martinis, and order another round. Again, four excellent martinis are produced with the bartender again saying, “That’s 40 cents, please.â€? They pay the 40 cents, but their curiosity gets the better of them, so one of the PHQ Ă€QDOO\ DVNV ´+RZ FDQ \RX DIIRUG WR VHUYH martinis as well as these for a dime apiece?â€? “I retired last year,â€? replies the bartender, “when I hit the Lottery jackpot for $250 million. I always wanted to own a bar so opened up this place. Every drink costs a dime, any kind of drink you can think of, it’s all the same.â€? “Wow, that’s quite a story,â€? says one of the men. One of the other men gestures to the end of the bar and asks the bartender, “What’s with them?
