APPRECIATION DAY On Saturday, February 23rd, under sunny, blue skies, APPRECIATION DAY was held. It was a fun day for all who attended! They enjoyed coffee and baked goods, lunch, games, Bingo, and dancing and prizes at night. Lunch was served to 600 residents [sorry about the baked beans]. Besides the regular games, many new games were introduced: treasure hunt, croquet, fishing, pickleball, and spin the wheel where participants were awarded tickets for a chance to win a prize. Following the games, Bingo was played, and prizes were given out to the lucky winners. The day ended with a Hawaiian Themed Dance, where Stu and Belle Berman were honored. You thought you were in Hawaii with all the decorations and colorful attire of the attendees. Besides dancing, door and game prizes were given out. Also, a hula dance competition between the men and ladies was held, with the ladies prevailing; there was a lot of hip swiveling and chuckles. All of this would not be possible if it were not for more than 100 volunteers and Hometown America’s financial support. Thank you to both. A big thank you to the many vendors and anonymous donors for their support. The APPRECIATION DAY committee is open to new ideas and new committee members for next year’s event.

FMO NEWS
TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS For those of you who missed our February meeting, we had a very interesting speaker from the North Fort Myers Fire Department. Her information was important and timely and could possibly save your life. Most of her discussion was focused around maintaining a working smoke detector in your home. Most people don’t realize that smoke detectors only have a 10-year operational life before needing replacement. If your smoke detector is more than 10 years old; it is important that you replace it. If you don’t replace it, replace the batteries. The life you save may be that of your neighbor or yourself. Think about it. So, you don’t have to travel far, the April meeting, to be held at Pine Lakes on Friday, April 12th, is up the road and across the street. As usual, meetings start at 1:00 PM and you can be back at the pool by 3:15 PM. You will obtain important information as well as great snacks – what an interesting combination. I would like to take a moment to thank Belle Berman and Bill Parker for their support and attendance at the FMO meetings. It is very much appreciated. Are you a member of the FMO? Applications are on the back bulletin board. It doesn’t matter whether you are a homeowner or renter, if your permanent residence is in Florida or wherever, your membership is important. It is worth repeating. There is strength in numbers. Remember you need FMO and FMO needs you. For those traveling North in the coming weeks. Safe travels and a happy, healthy summer. We look forward to seeing you in the fall. Stuart Berman

FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Welcome to our many and participation.
new residents and our new Homeowners Association members. You made a smart move by purchasing in Tara Woods and recognize a great value by joining the Homeowners Association. We look forward to many years together enjoying our piece of paradise. Additions to your Board: the Board appointed Dave Lindon and Keith Schuelke to each serve out a one year term. Congratulations! Thank you to the other residents who expressed an interest in joining the Board. Monday, April 8th, will be our last Homeowners Association meeting for the season. We will resume Association meetings on Monday, October 14th, at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. Thank you for your attendance
HEADS UP – if you are leaving for the summer – have a plan. Make sure your home is prepared for a possible hurricane. One big thing – bring in all yard items that could become projectiles. If you are staying to enjoy our summer – have a plan. Best plan – after preparing your home, get out of town until the hurricane passes. Very good plan – talk to our Special Needs team to register and see if you qualify for a special needs shelter. Okay plan – prepare your home, pack all necessary items and be ready to head to a public shelter when they open. The Tara Woods Clubhouse will not be an option. Questions can be directed to Frank Millette, Hurricane Committee
Chairman, at 239-464-5886; Sue Cook, Special Needs Committee Coordinator, at 239-6348485; or Lou Dunning, Hurricane Committee Co-chair, at 239-240-5847. DID YOU KNOW THAT – every Wednesday at 2:00 PM a group of happy cribbage players convene in the Card Room to test their skill at cribbage. What is cribbage you say? It’s a card game invented in the early 1600’s by Sir John Suckling, an English Courtier, poet, gamester and gambler. If you are interested, contact John D’Amico at 239-731-7928. If asked, John can explain pegging – it’s fun. Lou Dunning, President loudunning2@gmail.com 239-240-5847

MANAGER’S CORNER Hello to all new residents and renters. We appreciate you choosing Tara Woods for your winter home in south Florida. Our residents Appreciation Day was fun for all. We did some different things this year. We found out we have some dancers among us. If you missed the Hula dance-off, you missed a great time. There were games, a luncheon, and we finished the day with door prizes, music, dancing and loads of laughter. Many thanks go out to all who volunteered and worked endless hours to aide in making this a most special day for all. March events brought us Trash and Treasure, a play given by the Entertainers, which was a wonderful success. The St. Patrick’s Day party, the Chorus show and all monthly Club parties, including our monthly Happy Hour. The Second Yard of the Quarter goes to Lot #284, Larry and Christine Fonner. Congratulations are in order for the Fonners as they have been sprucing up, doing yard work and adding their own touches. This yard was nominated by others. If you would like to nominate someone for Yard of the Quarter for the Third Quarter, please stop by the Office and let us know who you would like to nominate. Again, thank you for remembering to abide by our speed limit and stopping at the stop signs. This is, after all, for the safety of our residents. Reminder that golf carts are to obey the speed limit and stop at stop signs. Darlene D. Bradley • Community Manager “Be happy with what you have. Be excited about what you want.” - Alan Cohen

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen....by the time you are reading this, our play will be over for this year. We hope that you all got the opportunity to come to one of our performances. Also, that if you did attend, you enjoyed the comedy we put together. Comedy looks easy to repeat over and over, but it is not. Making the acting look fresh and new is the secret to a successful production. We also want to thank the fourteen ladies who put so much of themselves into the quilt they created for our play. We pulled the winning ticket on Saturday night during intermission. The winning person is one of our community members, Sue Sobkowicz. You must congratulate her when you see her. If you ask nice, maybe she will let you see her quilt. In addition to making Sue happy, we will make Ronald McDonald House Charities happy by giving them a check for $700.00. What an incredible amount. Thank you everyone. Everyone involved in the play wants to thank all of you who purchased a ticket for this raffle. The Entertainers are so thankful that our production staff, who are all listed on the back of the program, along with the actors challenged themselves this year. Working together we created art. Just like the play you just enjoyed and the quilt that was made, it does take a village; Become A Villager! “You’ll never really be great unless you aim high.” – Stella Adler Pat Dunning, Stage Manager for the Entertainers pdunning46@gmail.com or 239-599-4490

Our March 5th meeting was well attended; thank you, brothers. We are looking forward to March 14th when we have our annual luncheon. We are sad at loosing Shirley Smalley, an honorary member. Her husband, Dick, was a great member of our club and we certainly will miss him and now Shirley. I am sure they are happy to be together with our Heavenly Father. Brothers I have a splendid book, “A Pilgrim’s Path” by John J. Robinson, which, if interested, you may borrow. He takes on the enemies of our fraternity, defusing and refuting fabrications and misstatements of those that hate our being. Fraternally, Bob Cooney, • PM • 731-2158

You will be receiving a phone call from the Calling Post telephone number (405) 308-4474 with a recorded “test” message. There is no need for you to respond. Please add this number to your phone contacts so the call gets through to you. If you do NOT receive a recorded message on April 9th, please contact bill@twhoa.net or call (313) 220-0622. The Trash and Treasure was a success! THANK YOU to Everyone who donated items. The Garden Club will again be able to hold the Fashion Show in November as a free event – we will be able to make donations to CROW and ECHO and have monies to keep up our beautiful Butterfly Garden. A special THANK YOU to ALL the great volunteers. Without these people the Trash and Treasure would not be possible. This year’s luncheon is tentatively reserved at Magnolia Landing for Friday, April 5th. As a reminder, the Garden Club Luncheon is open to Garden Club members Only! Of course, if you have Family or Friends visiting, they are also welcome to come. What a GREAT time to join. Dues are ONLY $5.00 and you would be part of the group that is responsible for: The Fashion Show, The Craft Fair and The Trash and Treasure. I promise no one will force you to do any gardening. A sign-up sheet for the luncheon will be in the Clubhouse with all the details. As a heads up, this year’s Fashion Show is Sunday, November 17th, so that anyone who is still working will be able to attend. Lots of new people in the park – ladies have you ever thought about being a model? We need models for the November fashion show; it’s lots of fun and you get to wear the newest fashions. If interested, either join the club, or contact me.
Please take time to visit the Butterfly Garden. Linda and John Hoos continue to do such a great job.
Did you know: If you look closely in the garden you can see the larva on the various leaves of the special plants chosen for this reason and even get a glimpse of the pupa. All of the plants in the Butterfly Garden are chosen specifically for the butterflies’ needs in the different stages of its life. Even the muddy fountain, since butterflies (mostly male butterflies) get nutrients from the mud which they pass to the female thru mating. These nutrients help increase the chance of passing their genes to another generation. As Linda likes to say, “life is constantly going on in the garden”. It’s a wonderful thought and we are lucky if we get to see it. Rachelle DellaRocca 239-322-6386 What to Plant Annuals: Plant heat-tolerant annuals, such as coleus, vinca, and portulaca.
Bulbs: Cannas thrive in the heat of summer. New varieties have colorful leaves as well as flowers. Herbs: Add nasturtiums to your herb garden. The leaves and flowers add a peppery zest to salads. Vegetables: Continue planting warmseason vegetables such as eggplant, southern pea, bush bean, sweet potato, and summer squash. Watch irrigation if the weather is dry. What to do Pests: When monitoring insect activity, know which bugs damage plants and which do not. Identify and conserve beneficial insects: Some insects should be encouraged in your yard! Flowering Plants: Damaged flowers on gardenias and roses may indicate thrips are present. Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on developing tomato plants. Palms: Identify and treat environmental and nutritional disorders in palm trees. Oleanders: Chewed or ragged leaves indicate oleander caterpillars at work. Fruits: Propagate fruit crops by air layering and grafting. Divide perennials and bulbs: Divide clumps of bulbs, ornamental grasses, and herbaceous perennials to expand garden beds or to pass along to friends. Shrubs: Choose from a wide variety of shrubs to add to the landscape now. Excerpts from the UF gardening calendar South Florida edition, for complete information see website.

CANADIAN CLUB It was nice to see a good turnout at February’s dinner, which was hosted by the Sharps and Redgers. The fajitas soon disappeared and a big thank you to our Canadian Club members for providing appetizers, desserts and salads to complete the meal. Dinner was followed by a fun-filled game of “Not So New Newlywed Game” hosted by Patti Thompson. There were lots of laughs as we enjoyed hearing the answers or nonanswers from our couples, who were good natured participants. Our last dinner is Friday, March 22nd, and will be hosted by Carl and Kathy Marquis, who will be serving Hawaiian Burgers. I would like to hear about any new Canadians who have arrived in Tara Woods so I can update our directory with their email addresses, home addresses and phone numbers. Also, please give some thought to hosting a dinner during the next season, November – March. If you don’t want to organize a meal, we can always entertain some thoughts to try a popular restaurant around town. How about planning an after-dinner activity? This is your club – lets make it fun. Thank you to those who participated in the Appreciation Day games. David and I enjoyed planning the croquet game and look forward to “tweeking” the game to make it more enjoyable and challenging for next year. Our volunteer helpers, Marg, Barb, Joe and Joan were Trojans for being there for two hours in that hot sun. Safe travels to those leaving at the end of the month. Where did the time go? MIDWEST CLUB March 1st was the day the Midwest Club gathered all its Parrot Heads together to celebrate Jimmy Buffett style. After bowling with coconuts and a tropical attire contest, we sat down to share a wonderful meal. As strains of Jimmy Buffett hits played quietly in the background, we lined up to dine. Caribbean Chicken over rice prepared by Chef Shelly, as well as all the tropical appetizers, salads, sides, and desserts prepared by all the chefs from the Midwest were scrumptious. The evening finished with some lively dancing accompanied by lots of laughter. Do you know a dingo’s country of origin? Or which state is considered the birthplace of aviation? These are some of the possible questions the Midwest Club will try to answer at the last meeting of the season, Friday, April 12th. In case you haven’t guessed, it will be Trivia Night. Stay tuned for some of the answers in the May edition of The Columns. Debbie Polenska

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you. The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem. (911 or 239477-1000) THIS MONTH’S TIP By the time you read this tip we will be in the “Spring Time” and with spring time brings the season of love. The mating season for alligators is about to begin and they become very aggressive. Please, do not walk your grandchildren and/or pets on the water’s edge. With the warmer weather you will also see more snakes. Most are good and very beneficial, but several are poisonous. I have a sheet from the poison control center to identify them and will make copies available at the Neighborhood Watch space on the bulletin board. Bob Glandorf Stay safe

LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB
The Computer Club offers free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer including games and other programs, internet, email, and multi-media. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects; this year we will examine social media, smart phones, tablets, and the Google (Android) operating system. Other topics will be added later as time allows. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open ques-
tion and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. This month we covered computer speech and speech recognition and will continue with social media and Google. The Basics course has finished Windows files and folders; the next topics will be an overview of the Wordpad word processor that is included with every Windows computer, and the Microsoft Paint application used for drawing simple diagrams and graphics. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. We spend as much time as we need
to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

What Should You Do With an Inheritance? If you were to receive a sizable inheritance, what should you do with it? This money could help you achieve some of your important financial goals – so you’ll want to think carefully about your choices. Of course, everyone’s needs are different, so there’s no one “right” way to handle a large lump sum. But here are a few suggestions that may be useful: Pay off some debts. Depending on the size of your inheritance, you may want to consider paying off some, if not all, of your debts, such as car loans, personal loans and student loans. You might even consider paying off your mortgage, but you may not want to, as you might be able to get a better return on your money by investing it. Also, if all your money is tied up in a house, you’ll typically have less liquidity than you would get from your investments. Contribute more to your retirement accounts. You may now be able to afford to contribute more to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, as well as to your IRA. These accounts offer tax benefits plus an array of investment choices, so they are excellent ways to build resources for retirement. Save for college. If you have children, or grandchildren, whom you would like to someday send to college, you might want to put some of your inheritance into a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan, which provides tax benefits and gives you great flexibility in distributing the money. Build an emergency fund. If you haven’t already built an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, you may be able to do so now, using part of your inheritance. Keep the money in a liquid, low-risk account, so that it’s readily available to pay for unexpected costs. Without such a fund, you might be forced to tap into your long-term investments. Above all else, you may want to get some help. If you don’t already have one, a financial professional can recommend ways of using the money to help you meet your goals. For one thing, you could further diversify your investments, which is important, because diversification can help reduce the effects of market volatility on your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.) And a financial professional can help you determine how much your plans could change due to the inheritance. To name just one possibility, you might be able to move up your retirement date. If so, you’d need to adjust many aspects of your financial strategy, such as when to take Social Security, how much to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts, and so on. You’ll also need to consult with your tax advisor, because some inherited assets, such as an IRA, could have tax implications. The winter season of tennis here at Tara Woods is winding down. The snowbirds, like Kathy and me, will be heading north for the summer, so the courts won’t be nearly as busy. We had our last Round Robin of the season on March 31st, with our final Tennis Association Meeting of the season following that. At 6:00 PM that evening we had a year-end banquet at the Shell Factory. All Tara Woods tennis players were invited to attend this event, whether or not
they were Tennis Association members. The courts will be refinished this summer (per Hometown America). We are looking forward to the courts looking spiffy and ready when we get back in the fall. Our Vice President, Fred Puhlfuerst, will be standing in for me this summer;

any questions should be directed his way. I hope everyone has a healthy and safe summer. We’ll see you the first week in November. Kathy and I always look forward to coming back to our Florida home and a new season of tennis. – Roger Rafferty TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s Team – Angels: The league tennis season is over for the Tara Woods Angels, with our last match being played on March 7th. We finished in first place. We had been in first place almost since the start of the season. To recap our season: After Week 1, we were tied for first place. After Week 2, we were just one win behind the first place team. We regained first place in Week 3 and never relinquished our lead. The teams holding second and third place changed a few times over the course of the season. Congratulations to everyone on our team. In rethinking how our matches were played, some were fairly easy, but we had many, many tough matches and some come-from-behind victories, along with a few nail-biting tie-breakers. What a season it was! – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE
White Team – Stallions: We, the members of the White Team, would like to thank all the spectators who come out week after week to watch us play. It encourages us to play the best we can. As mentioned in the past, all our team members play each week – some of the guys play one set and some play two sets. This gives all of us the chance to enjoy playing and socializing with the other team. We have three matches left to play and we have secured second place in the White Division. Good playing guys!!!! Cheers. – Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers: A On February 14th we played the Lake Fairways Cougars and could only manage a 2 win – 4 loss match. The following week the Tigers had a bye week. On February 28th we played the Pine Lakes Pitbulls. They are placed directly above us in the standings. Unfortunately, we were unable to win the match. The tigers only won 1 set and lost 5. We started the last month of the season (March) not as good as we would have liked. On March 7th we met the Herons Glen Smashers. We had some very good sets but only managed to win 2 and we lost 4; one of our losses was a tie-breaker. So, we go into the last two matches of the season. We do have to play top teams in the league. – Dale Holat Blue Team – Mustangs: As we play our final three matches in March, we hold a 12 set advantage over the rest of the league! This has been mainly ac-
Wow! What a whirlwind March we just had. Now I know why “what goes in like a lion and comes out like a lamb”. This past March, Elvis, who decided not to leave the building that one Saturday evening, gave us a performance that brought memories to young and old alike through his songs, along with a whole lot of shaking going on. Our Entertainers performed for two days the “Red Velvet Cake War” play. Now it makes one crave for a great big hunk of this cake with a cold glass of milk. Yummy! And finally, of course, the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Party, once again enjoying Corned Beef and Cabbage, seeing many shades of Irish green right before my eyes, singing sing-a-longs and I can’t help not doing an Irish Jig. But, I still wasn’t able to catch that Leprechaun that I‘ve been chasing for the last two years since writing my article for you all. Now we are in April, April Fool’s Day (April 1st) to Easter, which falls later this year on April 21st. Maybe I’ll be lucky and catch the Easter Bunny instead of the Leprechaun. If not, I do look forward to hunting for those Easter Eggs. Another thing we may notice is the start of some of our snowbirds may be heading back North or for other destinations that may be in their
travels. Wow, where did the time go? Either by car, bus, train, riding with others, along for quick transportation – flying by plane, more considerations need to take place for the family pet (if there’s one in your household). Have you noticed that around us and in the news, animals are allowed almost everywhere when they address us as a service or emotional support animal. It’s quite confusing. I know for a fact that I had to go through a six-month program to become a registered Service, Therapy, Emotional Support Animal for my master’s late husband. Boy! That’s no puppy class. Lately, I have seen signs posted on several establishments allowing us to come in. But what are the guidelines between a Service, Emotional, Therapy and Companion Animal? This brings up this segment of Bailey Speaks, knowing the guidelines and definition of this criteria. NOTE: I hope I’m not barking up the wrong tree on this matter, but I have been confronted on the topic quite a bit by others. Therapy: Therapy dogs are often found in establishments where various forms of therapy are applied; i.e., care homes (example, nursing homes) to physical rehabilitation centers.
complished with the sacrificing personal gains by the team for the goal of good team play. Most of our players are very capable of court one playing, but have not asked or questioned my decisions, and that has led to a very good season for our team. I will no longer be a captain next season, but I will always have the most respect for this group. – Ed Malatesta ROUND ROBIN With the close of the 2018-19 tennis season, on behalf of Al Dion and myself, I want to thank all of you who participated in the Round Robins. It appeared that most everyone enjoyed playing with, and against, players who they may not usually play with. The Round Robin on February 24th went well with fine snacks provided by Janice and George Johnston. At the Tennis Association meeting, a scrumptious dinner was prepared by Mary and Ed Sandre. Thank you for your efforts. The next – and last – Round Robin of the season will have already taken place as of the writing for this issue of The Columns. It’s been an interesting experience for me to have coordinated the Round Robins this season; however, I must resign from this position. I’m sure that someone will step up to take my place. I will be available to help break in whoever takes the job, just as Linda and Warren were kind enough to do for me. I sincerely hope that all have a safe and healthy spring and summer. – Jon Gold Submitted by Linda Engel In my travels, plus doing such a task, I and another fellow therapy dog helped a child gain confidence to read out loud. Don’t forget how much joy we give to those living in nursing homes and other institutions similar to that. Unfortunately, therapy dogs do not enjoy the legal protection which the other assistant animals have. Emotional Support: This support animal can be addressed as any animal that can and is used to provide their owners with emotional comfort and do not require special training. Service: Service animals are specifically trained to perform tasks for their owners who have disabilities, allowing them to live an independent life style. Those who benefit from them are the legally blind, impaired hearing, suffering from seizures, wheelchair bound, bedridden, allergies, diabetes, PTSD. They help their disabled owner by performing simple tasks. You may see us wearing a vest which requests people not to pet us because we are here to serve our special owners. In 2013, therapy, emotional, and service dogs are allowed in housing under the Fair Housing Act (FHA). It recognizes that these animals legally have the ability to be able to function on all four feet in order to perform the tasks they are trained to do for their owner’s needs. Today, service dogs with proper ID’s can now travel on planes, cars,

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) governs the use of Service Dogs in public places. These animals are to have equal access to public places such as restaurants, hospitals, hotels, theaters, malls, other shopping establishments and, of course, government buildings. Even if you are planning a vacation, National Parks welcome your service animal; they too can enjoy the spectacular area as you do. Try to think if your animal fits this criterion. If not, don’t spoil it for others by saying I’m a Service Animal; I’ve seen animals that don’t fit this bill. On my last trip, there was a service “skunk” on board – does it mean the owners have an odor issue and the service “skunk” may overlook their problem (who knows!) along with a gator (as was
seen on the local news recently). Do they really fit the bill? I wonder. What’s next? What it is, it is. Well, my time is up for Bailey Speaks for this month. I hope I have clarified some of these issues on this topic. Service vs. emotional support animals no matter what, we all feel that our pets are service animals to us not just as a family member; they also bridge the gap of companionship with a warm heart and a cold wet nose. ‘Til next month, Happy Tails, Bailey P.S. Happy Easter. Please pick up after us – in and around our community and our dog park.
