FMO NEWS - TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

Welcome back snowbirds, renters and guests. We missed you and hope your journey wasn’t too stressful. The FMO meeting season, for our District, will start on Friday, November 8th, at the Riverside Oaks Mobile Home Park in Punta Gorda. Once I receive the official notice, it will be posted on the back bulletin board with directions on how to get there. All meetings start at 1:00 PM and are usually done by 3:00 PM. As I have said many times, the

refreshments are fantastic. Don’t want to drive by yourself ? Carpool. If you are not a member of the FMO, I would strongly encourage you to join. The FMO is only as strong as its membership. Applications are on the back bulletin board. Remember you need FMO and FMO needs you. Wishing you and your families a very happy, healthy, and safe holiday season. Stuart Berman

MANAGER’S CORNER Hello Tara Woods, As we head into Fall, my team, the TWHA, and myself are working hard to get Tara Woods in great shape. Some projects/requests have been completed, but many more are coming. Working together, our community can be the real

“Crown Jewel” of Hometown America. I do my best to meet with residents at their convenience; however, there will be times that I will have deadlines and prior commitments and will not be available. I want to make sure I give each resident the time they deserve. Making an appointment

will give us both the opportunity to meet and have uninterrupted time together. I am looking forward to the Fall/Winter season! Kind Regards. Cathy Winfree Tara Woods Community Manager

FROM THE BOARD ROOM BY LOU Your Board continued to work for you throughout the summer. This summer has been especially busy and has produced many positive things for our residents: • The Board voted at our September 9th meeting to select Chris Olson as our Recording Secretary. Chris adds another dynamic link to our strong, volunteer-oriented Board. Welcome Chris! • Your Board voted to contribute $50.00 towards the “Quarter Auction” for two baskets of cheer. The Quarter Auction is a kick-off for our traditional “Day of Caring”. • Director Keith Schuelke debuted a new line of apparel: “men’s and women’s shirts and ball caps” for residents. Available at Saturday Morning Coffee and before Bingo on Tuesday night. • The Board approved new guidelines (developed by a Director’s sub-committee) for residents wishing to address the Board at Homeowners’ meetings. • The Board changed the format of the Community

Improvement Agenda to include a carry-over section. In addition, the monthly agenda is now prepared and emailed to the Community Manager prior to the meeting in order to facilitate better prepared discussions. The Board approved moving forward with Lifetouch. Lifetouch will be taking photos of all participating Tara Woods Residents. The participating residents will receive a free 8x10 portrait and a free updatable community directory featuring residents’ photos and contact information. Participants will also have the opportunity to purchase additional photos. Thank you to Sheila Harris and her team for heading up this program. The Board voted to accept the recommendation of the By-laws Committee rewording of one section. The membership will vote on this recommendation at the Membership meeting in January or by proxy. The Board agreed to work jointly with Hometown

America to recognize and honor our veterans at a special pancake breakfast, where veterans eat free, on Saturday, November 9 th. The Board voted to contribute $100.00 to The Columns Luncheon held to recognize the many residents who work to ensure we receive The Columns newspaper. The luncheon will be held Sunday, November 10th. The Board is moving forward to present our residents an outstanding “Health Fair” on Tuesday, January 14th, 2020 in the Clubhouse from 9:00 AM to noon. Thank you to Dave Lindon, Hilda Dienes and Barbara Werner-Lubich for their hard work for our benefit. The Board purchased a new program with the goal of improving the process, accuracy and look of The Columns Calendar. Lou Dunning President loudunning2@gmail.com 239-240-5847

Be Creative When Withdrawing from Retirement Accounts Like many people, you may spend decades putting money into your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. But eventually you will want to take this money out – if you must start withdrawing some of it. How can you make the best use of these funds? To begin with, here’s some background: When you turn 70 ½, you need to start withdrawals – called required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 457(b) or 403(b). (A Roth IRA is not subject to these rules; you can essentially keep your account intact for as long as you like.) You can take more than the RMD, but if you don’t take at least the minimum (which is based on your account balance and your life expectancy), you’ll generally be taxed at 50% of the amount you should have taken – so don’t forget these withdrawals. Here, then, is the question: What should you do with the RMDs? If you need the entire amount to help support your lifestyle, there’s no issue – you take the money and use it. But what if you don’t need it all? Keeping in mind that the withdrawals are generally fully taxable at your personal income tax rate, are there some particularly smart ways in which you can use the money to help your family or, possibly, a charitable organization? Here are a few suggestions:

• • •

Help your grown children with their retirement accounts. Your grown children may not always be able to afford to “max out” on their IRAs. You might want to help them with any excess funds from your own retirement accounts. You can give $15,000 per year, per recipient, without incurring any gift taxes – an amount far higher than the current annual IRA contribution limit of $6,000 (or $7,000 for individuals 50 or older). Help your grandchildren pay for college. You might want to contribute to an investment specifically designed to build assets for college. A financial professional can help you choose which investments might be most appropriate. Of course, if your grandchildren are already in college, you are free to simply write a check to the school to help cover tuition and other expenses. Help support a charitable organization. Due to recent changes in tax laws, many individuals now claim a standard deduction, rather than itemizing. As a result, there’s less of an incentive, from a tax standpoint, for people to contribute to charitable organizations. But if you’d still like to support a charitable group and gain potential tax benefits, you might want to consider moving some, or all, of your required distributions from your IRA to a charity. You can transfer up to $100,000 from your IRA in this type of qualified charitable distribution, thus meeting your RMD requirements without adding to your taxable income. Furthermore, this move might keep you in a lower tax bracket. (Before making this transfer, though, you will need to consult with your tax advisor.)

Your RMDs can contribute greatly to your retirement income, but, as we’ve seen, they can do even more than that – so use them wisely.

Our next meeting is Saturday, November 9th, at 9:00 AM. This is our only meeting before the Fashion Show. The Craft Fair is Saturday, November 2nd, and is open to the public. Thanks to Carol Shields, we have a full house of talented vendors selling their handmade items – a great time to find that special present or something unique for yourself. This year the: Bake Sale is hosted by the Midwest Club Luncheon is hosted by the New York / New Jersey Club And The Basket of Cheer by the Chorus Free drawings for door prizes throughout the Fair The Fashion Show Is Sunday, November 17th. This is a FREE event; you need only to sign up to bring either a salad or a dessert to attend. Wine and cheese, iced tea and lemonade, Favors for the ladies, raffles and prizes, will be supplied by Club members. A sign-up sheet will be in the Clubhouse, Thursday, October 17th. For the fashion show luncheon, we set up the buffet tables along both sides of the Clubhouse; this makes it easier and faster for everyone to serve themselves. So, whatever you decide to bring (either a salad or a dessert), please use TWO serving dishes. Please be mindful of how many people are signing up for salads or desserts; we would like to have more salads than desserts. It is very important to note what kind of wine you prefer to drink so that the correct wines can be purchased, or if you would like lemonade or iced tea. The Garden Club members will be bringing the cheese platters and the wine. The clothing that our beautiful models will be wearing is from: Razzle Dazzle, a wonderful boutique located at 1335 Cape Coral Parkway East. Please Volunteer to Help Without volunteers these events are not possible. If questions, contact Rachelle DellaRocca at 239-322-6386 What to plant Bedding Plants: Create a display of fall colors with cool season plants. Some to try are impatiens, strawflower, cape daisy, and pansy. Bulbs: Many bulbs like to get their start in cool weather. Bulbs to plant this month include amaryllis, crinum, and the many varieties of elephant’s ear. Herbs: Continue planting herbs from seeds or plants. A wide variety of herbs like cooler, dryer weather, including cilantro, dill, fennel, parsley, sage, and thyme. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops such as beet, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, kale, and lettuce. What to do Perennials: Divide and replant overgrown perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs now so that they establish before the coolest weather arrives. Fungal disease: Until May, watch for brown patch and large patch, fungal diseases that cause areas of grass to turn brown. Since treatment is difficult, prevention with proper cultural practices is key. Scale on ornamental plants: Now that temperatures are lower, use dormant oil sprays to control scale insects. Irrigation: Plants need less supplemental watering in cooler weather. Turn off systems and water only if needed. Fertilization and Irrigation Needs of Florida Lawns and Landscapes Poinsettias: Watch for hornworms on poinsettias planted in the landscape. This pest can quickly defoliate a plant; handpick or treat only the area infested. Lawns: This is a great time to plant ryegrass to cover bare patches in the lawn. ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES

COMING UP IN NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: The Thanksgiving Dinner is once again being hosted by Donna & Tom Erhardt and Friends, on Thursday, November 28th. Tickets are on sale now for only $10.00 per person. This is a meaningful way to celebrate and give thanks with your friends and family in Tara Woods. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, following Coffee at 9:00 AM, is the start of the Christmas festivities in Tara Woods. That’s when we “Deck The Halls” with our Christmas trees and bring the Clubhouse to life with Christmas cheer. Come on down for the fun and refreshments provided by the Canadian Club. Tickets for the Christmas Party on Saturday, December 7th, should go on sale in the beginning of November. I’m sure there is information in this issue of The Columns and a poster on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse with the details. You don’t want to miss this special occasion hosted by the Midwest Club. Don’t head north just yet! Make your plans to leave after the Christmas Golf Cart Parade on Wednesday, December 11th. Charge up and decorate your golf cart and be part of the fun. The parade begins at 6:00 PM, but line-up and Christmas “cheer” starts at 5:00 PM in the Clubhouse parking lot. This is your opportunity to share your Christmas goodies with the parade participants. Please do not stop the parade by serving goodies as they go by. You ARE encouraged to be outside and sharing Christmas wishes with shouts of “Merry Christmas” and cheerful waves to the passing carts. Bring your favorite Christmas cookies to share and participate in Caroling at the Clubhouse following the parade around 7:00 PM. Punch and hot chocolate will be ready and awaiting your arrival. Be prepared to sing some of your favorite Christmas songs. THANK YOU! Thank you to Cindy McKay and the “Just For Kicks” Committee for hosting the Halloween Party. Cindy goes all out decorating the Haunted House and a great “Mystery Room”. The food and music was great and the costumes wonderful. It was another fun time and a great way to kick off the season in Tara Woods. As the Clubs and groups start their planning of the numerous parties and events offered to our residents, please be aware of some basic guidelines for a successful event. It is important that your party/ event committee contact some key people to cover all your bases. Make sure your event is on the Calendar by contacting Judy Lanpher. Put it on the website by contacting Bill Loveday. Put it in The Columns by the 10th of the month before the event by sending the info to Linda Beaulieu. Notify Lloyd Kelsey of Sound & Lighting for microphones, use of the big screen or other sound and lighting needs. For Kitchen supplies, contact Janet Daly, at least a week before the event. As Activities Coordinator, I am available to meet with your committee early in the process to offer guidance in your preparations. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions regarding the parties and events. If I can’t answer your question, I most likely know who can. Happy Thanksgiving!

Sound & Lighting will again bring in professional entertainers for your enjoyment on Sunday, January 19th, 2020. For that show we are bringing back the identical twin brothers, SPITTIN’ IMAGE, who were here before in January of 2015. They are a musical/comedy duo who sing country, classic rock and all-time favorites. They’ll make you laugh until your sides ache! More details will follow in the next few months. The DVDs of the Entertainers’ play THE RED VELVET CAKE WAR and the New Image Chorus’ production of SPANNING THE DECADES-PART ll are now available. If you would like to obtain one or both, contact Polly Brown at 239-731-1614. The cost is $5.00 each. We are in need of someone with experience in audio/video recording of some of our events – usually the Entertainers annual play and the Chorus annual show. This would also include editing the SD cards in a software program to create a final master DVD. If you have the knowledge and are willing to be an active volunteer giving some time to the enjoyment of our community, please contact Frank Millette at 239-543-2954.

Hi! to all The Columns volunteers. I hope you are all having a great summer. It is HOT here. Just a few things to say: I have scheduled our second Thank You Luncheon for Sunday, November 10th, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in the Clubhouse. The menu will be pizza and ice cream, and I hope all of you hard workers will come. If you definitely cannot attend, please let me know, because I cannot eat too much ice cream. Thank you.

Also, to all of The Columns volunteers, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know when you leave and come back from vacation or if you are a snowbird. I am new at this and I need to know when I must stuff or deliver, and the summer subs need to know as well. Thank you. Linda Hoos 941-713-4868

CANADIAN CLUB

Well, it is hard to believe it is time once again for many of our Canadian Snowbirds to make their exodus to their southern homes. Where did the time go? I hope everyone had a great summer, although it seemed a long time getting to us.

The first Canadian Club dinner will be hosted by Kathy and Carl Marquis on Thursday, November 15th. For those who will be at Tara Woods, you will be treated to cedar plank salmon – sounds yummy. Contributions of salads, desserts or appetizers would be most welcome. Please let the Kathy and Carl know what you would like to bring. If there are new Canadian Tara Woods residents,

please forward your names and addresses to Brenda Redgers, bzztoy@hotmail.com, so I can update our mailing list. Looking forward to seeing all of you in the near future. Safe travels south. Our sympathies go out to Cookie Franks on the passing of Don. His humour and twinkling eyes will be missed. Also, to Richard Stonhill on the passing of his wife Carole.

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB NEWS

I hope all persons in the Tara Woods community have returned safe and healthy and ready to begin another year of activities. The get-together in October for the wine and cheese party was a great start for another year of fellowship. The next Mid-Atlantic Social Club meeting date is Sunday, November 17th. Please note that our time has been changed to 5:00 PM due to a scheduling conflict. As temperatures cool and the time changes, we look forward to a potluck dinner. Watch for emails and newsletters for details.

Add Saturday, November 30th, at 9:00 AM, to your calendar for decorating the Clubhouse Christmas tree. Happy Thanksgiving to all of Tara Woods from the Mid-Atlantic Social Club. Barb Pollitt, Secretary

MID-WEST CLUB

Hello, Midwest Club! I can’t believe it’s already November. Many of us will be very busy from now until the end of the year. At the meeting on October 11th, volunteers were asked to provide and sell baked goods for the upcoming Craft Fair on Saturday, November 2nd. All proceeds will be going to the Hearts & Homes For Veterans, Inc., such a wonderful way to

honor our vets. Those of you who have volunteered will have already received instructions on the procedures for that day. The Friday, November 8th meeting, will be a day that we will honor our veterans. Please bring your favorite soup, salad or dessert. The sign-up sheet will have been posted on the Clubhouse bulletin board with more information. The Midwest Club will be hosting the annual Tara Woods Christmas Dinner this year. Music is to be provided by John Nichols from Mobile Music, the gentleman who entertained us at

the Valentine’s Day Party. For dinner, we will be serving chicken alfredo, garden salad, garlic bread sticks, and cheesecake for dessert. Volunteers will be asked to help with many duties that are required to host a large party. The tickets will be sold for $12.00 per person, which will go on sale Saturday, November 9th, at Saturday Morning Coffee and Tuesday Bingo until Tuesday, December 3rd. Looking forward to a very festive evening. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!! Bobbie Mester

NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY CLUB ARE YOU READY FOR A PARTY... PAJAMA PARTY THAT IS! TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB

Welcome back to our Winter residents! On Thursday, November 7th, the Computer Club will begin a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. Our normal schedule of classes resumes on Friday, December 6th. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved

for General subjects, and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. The General topics cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, including Windows, working with photos, multi-media, tablets, cell phones and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you.

Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen...it is November and our rehearsals (Monday and Thursday, except the 28th) are coming along. This year’s offering will be one funny play, “She Was Only Marginally Modest or Have You No Shame”. This year our actors are stretching themselves, and they will be all the better for this effort. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Speaking of being better for it, life in Tara Woods is better

because we make it so. If you wake each day and moan about your life, most likely your day will go just like that. What a better world if each day we woke, got out of bed and were glad. There are plenty of things to complain about and find fault with, but there are also many things to be pleased about. Put a smile on your face, say hello and wave to your fellow Tara-ites. Will this change your life? No, not unless you want it to. So how about we all try to stretch ourselves and try something new, then maybe we will all be the better for it. And who knows, you might even get

the urge to join the Entertainers and really stretch yourself. Reminder to all members and interested parties – November 16th Entertainers Meeting after Saturday Morning Coffee. “Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it’s so accidental. It’s so much like life.” Arthur Miller Pat Dunning, Stage Manager for the Entertainersl, pdunning46@gmail.com or 239-599-4490

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them.If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem. (911 or 239-477-1000)

THIS MONTHS TIPS: Enjoy your winter here in Tara Woods. Beware of anyone asking for your personal information that you have not contacted. SHILOH SPEAKS Happy Fall to everyone in our Tara Woods Community and to the snowbirds finally arriving back. A quick reminder, November leaves us with 55 days until Christmas and 61 days until the New Year 2020. Let’s talk Turkey and let me put my paws in gear – don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on November 3rd, as I stated last month. Remember the old saying “Fall back – Spring ahead”. Other than setting our clocks back this month, we want to acknowledge Veterans Day, Monday, November 11th. Thank you for your service. Some places honor Veterans with a free meal. One of my favorite places who honors Vets this way is at your local Golden Coral (Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and Punta Gorda), after 5:00 PM. Check your website, TV news, and local newspapers for more information and other places who honor Veterans in some way. If you are wondering what the difference is between Veterans Day and Memorial Day here is a quick feedback. True, Memorial Day and Veterans Day are both patriotic holidays honoring the military, but there is a difference between them. Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May which honors the men and women who died while serving in the military. We recognize these American Patriots who have made the ultimate

sacrifice while protecting and defending our country they deeply loved. As we well know, Veterans Day is always observed on November 11th. VeteransDay recognizes all who have served in the Armed Forces. On Memorial Day, we honor our fallen heroes by attending services, laying flowers and placing flags on graves. VeteransDay is the opportunity to do the same, but it’s also an appropriate time to show your appreciation to their friends and family by flying the American Flag. “Thank you for your service.” I also want to address the brief history on Veterans Day. Veterans Day was first celebrated on November 11th, 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. This is when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. It was known as “Armistice Day” until

1954 when it changed to VeteransDay. Once again “Thank you for your service.” As we well know, November has another holiday that brings family and friends together – Thanksgiving. This year Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 28th. You know what that means? IT’S TURKEY TIME! Boy, am I looking forward to Thanksgiving! Yummy! Turkey with all the stuffing and fixings. Oh yeah! I guess I’ll share if you really want me too. But as we all know, we make way too much so I know I’ll get some of the leftovers. But please, no bones. Don’t eat too much turkey. Well, my time is up for this segment of Shiloh Speaks. Just a quick reminder to pick up after us at our Dog Park, and around our community of Tara Woods. Respect IT! To end this segment, my Thanksgiving prayer for my fellow four-footed furry friends and their owners on this Thanksgiving Day: A DOG IS GOD’S WAY OF PROVING HE DOESN’T WANT US TO WALK ALONE. Happy Tails. Shiloh

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THESE ARE USED FOR? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THIS IS?

If you answered yes to these questions, and you know how to use these items, then we could use your help. The Tara Woods Builders are looking for a few builders who would like to help build sets and stage construction for the Entertainers (stage play) and the Chorus (singing on stage).

Ron Proulx is looking for interested people for a few hours in January, February and March. If you are curious about this, please contact: Ron at 603-860-2129 Thank you for your spirit of volunteerism. Pat Dunning, Entertainers

TENNIS NEWS

TENNIS ASSOCIATION Kathy and I are looking forward to getting to our home in Tara Woods. The weather in Northern Minnesota is getting chillier by the day. We have the wood stove going every morning to take the chill out of the house. I hope everyone is ready for the new tennis season. As I mentioned in the October issue, the first Round Robin of the season is Sunday, November 24th – it will be good exercise before the Thanksgiving holiday. The snacks during the Round Robin will be provided by Fred Puhlfuerst, Kathy Rafferty, and Gail Stewig. The dinner, which is served at 5:00 PM, will be hosted by Frank and Carole Neveu. Following the dinner we will have our first Tennis Association Meeting which starts at 5:45 PM. As I’ve said before, anyone with an interest in tennis is invited to join the Tennis Association – beginner to experienced tennis players and everyone in between. This is an all-inclusive group. Don’t be shy; you will be more than welcome to join us for a little fun and camaraderie. See you on the courts, which are refinished and ready for play. – Roger Rafferty

We hope you will come out to watch us play and show your support for the Tara Woods women’s team. – Linda Engel

TENNIS LEAGUES The tennis leagues at Tara Woods – both the Women’s and Men’s Teams – should be starting the first week in November. As of this writing, however, all of our teams don’t have their schedules verified so we can’t tell you the date of each team’s first match. We hope you are ready to cheer on all of our tennis teams as you show your support for your Tara Woods friends.

ROUND ROBINS Our new 2019-2020 season is ready to start. Welcome back to all the returnees and those who are on the way. The first Tennis Association event is scheduled for Sunday, November 24th. Please check the bulletin board at the tennis courts to sign up for this season’s activities. Round Robin pairings will be posted before the play time. We expect to have fun times with the members and any others who may want to join us. As you know, new members are always welcome. Also, team events will also be starting this month. Be sure to check the schedules and come out to support the league players and their team play. We have three men’s teams and one women’s team which compete in area leagues. Looking forward to another successful Tara Woods tennis season. – Dale Holat

WOMEN’S LEAGUE WOMEN’S TEAM – ANGELS If the tentative league schedule is approved, the Tara Woods Angels should begin their league play on Thursday, November 14th, with an away game at Herons Glen. The team practices are on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM. The league schedule will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board as soon as it is finalized.

Inspiration Hour

MEN’S LEAGUE WHITE TEAM – STALLIONS I just wanted to let you all know that our first White Team tennis match will be held on Tuesday, November 5th, starting at 1:00 PM. The Tara Woods Tigers are excited to start the 2019-2020 tennis season. We are hoping for a fun and injury-free season, complete with success for all Tara Woods teams. The captains’ meeting for all the league teams is scheduled for October 28th and team play will commence soon after.
