From the President Well, you made it through February, but March is coming! And I’m talking about braving the multitude of activities we have to deal with at this time of the year, not the weather. Aren’t we lucky to be in beautiful Tara Woods in Southwest Florida while our friends and family up north are experiencing an extremely cold and snowy winter. Hopefully some of them have been able to come down for a visit and a little Florida sunshine. The new Board of Directors is working well together. We voted in Phil Featherbay as Parliamentarian; he comes with much experience in this field. We very much appreciate his volunteering his services. At the end of January we were notified that Hometown America is seeking compensation for their lawyer’s fees accrued during the Lou Cashin case, which was settled in August of 2013. Paul Montelaro did a great job of updating the members regarding this case at the February Homeowners Association Meeting on February 9th. He gave the background and then brought everyone upto-date on where it stands now. As you read this, there may have already been further updates. The Board is working to settle this with the best outcome possible for Lou. We will keep you posted as we progress.

The Board also voted to convene a By-laws Committee to review the By-laws once again. If you have a suggestion for a revision or possibly something new that should be added to this document, now is the time to bring it to our attention. Please write it out with your name and phone number and give it to any Board member, or mark it “By-laws Committee” and put it in the wall slot by the TWHA office window. We’ll see that it gets to the Committee. The revisions will be sent out in December to all members in good standing with the voting to take place at the Annual Meeting in January 2016 when a quorum is present. We are still asking for someone to chair the Nominating Committee and also to oversee the Activities Committee. The Board is hoping to get all the State Clubs on-board to host one of the major parties for the upcoming season. The New York/New Jersey Club will be doing Labor Day once again this year, and the New England Club has volunteered to do Halloween. If any other group besides the State Clubs would like to host a party or event (like the Bon Voyage Party), please contact Frank Millette. He’s holding a meeting of anyone interested on Friday, March 20th. Give him a call and volunteer! The Board and the entire com-

munity would appreciate it. Car Fit is coming to Tara Woods. What is Car Fit? In a nutshell, it’s a free assessment of you and your car and how you “fit” behind the wheel and deal with new car technology and aging. It’s an extremely worthwhile program that helps you to be a better, safer driver and protect the people around you. Doug has offered Shiloh Lane as the street to bring your car and be assessed. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board, or call Ann Millette if you would like an appointment. March brings us the Entertainers play and the New Image Chorus show, which is the culmination of many months of practice and rehearsal. I hope you will support these groups with your attendance. The Garden Club’s Trash & Treasure sale is also in early March and don’t forget St. Patrick’s Day. Lots happening again in March before we start to slow down a little. Many of you will be leaving us at the end of the month. I hope you’ve enjoyed your stay in Tara Woods and will be returning next season. I hope to see you at the many events our community has to offer.

Janet Daly The way to be happy is to make others so.

After many years of selling a variety of “Tara Woods” articles, this will advise all residents that the Apparel Shoppe in the Clubhouse is officially closed. For 13 years Celeste and I have been running the “Little Shoppe” under the authority of the Tara Woods Homeowners. Through the years we have sold golf shirts, ladies Tee shirts, wind breakers, golf hats, visors, tote bags, watches, walking lights and lanyards, all with the

Tara Woods name or logo on them. Also sold were a few other miscellaneous items. Additionally, we took care of having the embroidery with the logo put on the shirts for the New York/New Jersey Club and the New England Club. We will no longer be providing this service. Over the past few years, the interest of purchasing these items by the residents has fallen off. Therefore, even though these items were sold at a very minimal

profit (and sometimes at a loss), it has become a financial loss to the Homeowners Association. It is no longer practical. Of course, it is always possible for the interest to be back again with new people and new ideas in the future. It has been our pleasure, interesting and fun dealing with our friends and neighbors. So, it’s “so long” from Tony and Celeste Perre, 7317146.

TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION HOMEOWNERS DUES FOR 2015 As of January 31, 2015, the Tara Woods Homeowners Association had 283 paid members. As of February 1, 2015, there were 231 paid members. We now have 52 fewer members. Translated, that means that we have 52 homeowner families who paid dues for 2014 and have not paid for 2015. The message of this article is to encourage all of those 52 homeowners to pay their 2015 dues at this time. This is the perfect time. As a reminder, be aware that 2015 membership started on February 1, 2015 and will expire on January 31, 2016. This article is also directed to any new homeowners and old homeowners who have not yet joined the Homeowners Association. FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Dues are $15 per household per year. Cash and checks made out to TWHA accepted. Dues

can be deposited in the “Rent” mail slot outside the Homeowners office in the Clubhouse, or at my home. There is a small mail box outside my lanai door. I will also accept dues any time you see me around. Put your payment in an envelope with “Dues” or my name on it. Please include your lot number. TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING At the Tennis Association meeting on January 25th, Judy Holat and Mike Renzulli were appointed to the Nominating Committee. This Committee will submit names of candidates for the offices of the Tennis Association which will be voted on at the March meeting. If you are interested in being on the Tennis Association Board, please contact Judy or Mike. Offices that are open for voting on at the March meeting are President, Vice President, and Secretary. Players were asked to remember that the water cups are for a “one time use”. Please throw the used cups in one of the trash receptacles near the courts. There is no need to save your cup for another drink; get a clean one. The Office will be contacted to insure that we have sufficient cups for our needs. There was another reminder to players who use the ball machine. Please do not put pressur-

ized balls in the ball machine. The unpressurized balls do not have numbers on them so it is easy to distinguish pressurized balls from unpressurized ones. By mixing the balls, we lose consistency, which is the reason we went to these specific balls for the ball machine. The next meeting of the Tennis Association is set for Sunday, March 22nd, at 5:45 PM. This is the night of our election of officers to serve on the Tennis Association Board. So, plan to attend the meeting and cast your vote. Or, better yet, consider running for one of the positions on the Board. ROUND ROBIN The second Round Robin of the season was held on Sunday, January 25th. We had a good turnout, as tennis was enjoyed by 29 people. The weather was slightly cool, but the sun was shining, so it was a very beautiful day on the tennis courts. A nice assortment of court-

side snacks and drinks were provided by Dottie Hargrove. These kept everyone well hydrated and satisfied. After the tennis was over and we all had time to relax a little, we gathered in the Clubhouse for dinner, which was hosted by Arlene Greene and Janell Wissler. Sloppy Joes, homemade potato salad and cole slaw, along with baked beans, chips, and dessert were enjoyed by 40 people. Arlene and Janell had help from Don and Sharon Boehlke and Bea Sponseller. There were also a host of other people helping in the kitchen that day. They are all to be commended for helping out. Thank you; you know who you are. Val and Paul Roderick hosted the dinner for the February 22nd Round Robin, with help from Mary Ellen and Jon Gold. The courtside snacks were provided by Bea Sponseller. More information on that February Round Robin will be in the April edition of the Columns.

TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE The Women’s SWIFT League is more than half over. We have played ten matches (60 sets) so far this season, and we have just four more matches to play. I am happy to report that the two Tara Woods teams are still in first and second place. Only 5 wins separate our two teams.

The Tara Woods Angels are in first place, with 50 wins and 10 losses. The Tara Woods Jewels are in second place with 45 wins and 15 losses. As of this writing, February 1st, the third place team (Pine Lakes) is behind the Jewels by 11 games, with 34 wins and 26 losses. Congratulations go out to both teams on this impressive record. It is very satisfying to see both Tara Woods teams leading the league. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE Red League Unfortunately, the Red Team is suffering with some injured players. We are fortunate to be able to use some of the White Team players to help us out. We really appreciate this. Presently, we are in fourth place, with our eye on third place. Wish us luck!!!!! Cheers. – Glen Fisher

White League After 11 matches (66 sets) the Tara Woods Mustangs and two other teams are fighting for fourth place. With only 7 matches left, this should be an exciting race to finish the season. Don’t forget Tuesdays at 1:30 PM. Check the Tennis Bulletin Board for our home/away matches. We have been greatly confused by the lack of interest in our 50/50 raffle, so we have decided to withdraw from this activity, only to replace it with cheerleaders. Please come and enjoy the show. – Gerry Gagnon Blue League The game scheduled for February 5th was cancelled due to rain. We are shooting to play our make-up game on February 9th. We remain in third place, a few percentage points behind the second place team. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel

TREASURES OF TARA

Judy and Lee Brda have been blessed with four daughters. ….. Holly, Heather, Dawn and Deanne (mothers now to their 10 grandchildren) imagine a home filled with 4 teenage daughters! Lee and Judy also had 4 weddings in 5 years….. They are so proud of their family and are looking forward to one of their grandsons graduating from West Point this spring!

Lee and his sister grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, but his family moved around when he was a young child. After graduating from high school, he was awarded two full-time scholarships, choosing the one to Rose Holman Engineering College in Terre Haute, Indiana, instead of Ohio State. His choice of the engineering college was a wise decision because he had an outstanding career in engineering and it was there that he met his wife, Judy, who was attending St. Mary of the Wood College in Indiana. They married soon after Lee’s graduation. Who could resist his sense of humor, keen intelligence and bright smile? Lee started his engineering career with AT&T, then to Florida where he helped design bridges in Tallahassee. He is still very proud of his bridge on Commercial Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. He was hired at Ford Motors on April 17, 1964, the day Ford introduced the

Mustang. For 32 years he worked for Ford, designing a 2 million square foot stamping plant in Woodhaven, Michigan, designing the Van Dyke, as well as being a general foreman, engineering supervisor, and production superintendent for TPM (total productive maintenance). He also wrote a manual for the TPM training course, earned a Masters and taught at the School Craft College. At Tara Woods we know Judy’s enthusiasm for life, so we are not surprised that at the time she was raising her girls she was a soccer coach for 5- and 6-year olds. (Lee calls them the Flower Pickers!) She also started the high school soccer team, and then on to the Junior College soccer team. Her team won the National Championship and three of their girls got soccer scholarships. During this time she also went back to college and got an Associate Degree. You can tell what a good mother Judy was by the way she guided her daughters especially with their soccer careers. In early retirement Judy and Lee vacationed for 6 months in Hawaii for many

years and traveled to many countries: England, Scotland, Spain, France, and Australia. In 2006 they were one of the first owners in the back section of Tara Woods and bought their beautiful home on Potomac Circle. (Dave and Joan Simonson were there first!) The Brdas have made Tara Woods a better, healthier place. Judy organized and runs the Water Aerobics 3 times a week and with her dear friend, Jane Crawford, they lead the indoor exercises on Mondays/Fridays. Being a breast cancer survivor, she is responsible (with friends) for the Cancer Christmas Tree. She is also involved in running the summer golf league with Daryl, Bill and Jane Crawford. She also Cochairs the Memorial Service Luncheons in the Clubhouse and is Vice President of the New Image Chorus. Both Lee and Judy have been Directors on the Tara Woods Board, they deliver the Columns and support all we do at Tara Woods. We thank them for making Tara Woods a better, happier place! What Do Low Oil Prices Mean for Investors? As you’ve no doubt noticed, your trips to the gas station have been a lot more pleasant these past several months. There’s not much doubt that low oil prices have been welcome to you as a driver. But when oil is cheap, is that good for you as an investor?

There’s no clear-cut answer. But consider the following effects of low oil prices:

Positive impact on economy — When you spend less at the gas pump, relative to recent years, what will you do with your savings? Like most people, you’ll probably spend most of it on goods and services. If you multiply the amount of your increased spending by the millions of other Americans who are also saving money on gas, you can see that you and your fellow consumers are likely adding billions of dollars to the econo- my. Typically, a strong economy is also good for the financial markets — and for the people who invest in them. Different results for different sectors — Different sectors within the financial markets may respond in different ways to low oil prices, even if the overall effect is generally positive. For example, businesses such as consumer goods companies and auto manufacturers may respond favorably to cheaper oil and gas. But the picture might be quite a bit different for energy companies.

You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to adjust your investment portfolio in response to low oil prices. In fact, you may well want to consult with your financial professional to determine which moves might make sense for your individual situation. Yet there’s actually a bigger lesson to be learned here: Don’t overreact to temporary developments. The recent decline in oil prices has certainly had an economic impact, but no one can predict how long these prices will stay low or what other factors may arise that would affect the financial markets. That’s why you can’t reconfigure your portfolio based on particular events, whatever they may be — oil price drops, interest-rate fluctuations, political squabbles at home, natural disasters in faraway lands, and so on. If you can keep from being overly influenced by specific events, you may be able to gain at least two key benefits: First, by not making trades constantly in reaction to the headlines of the day, you can avoid piling up heavy fees and commissions —costs that can reduce the return rate on your investments. Second, you’ll find that if you aren’t always thinking about what’s going on in the world today, you can focus your investment efforts more intensely on where you want to be tomorrow. The most successful investors set long-term goals and don’t focus on factors they cannot control, such as oil prices, interest-rate changes or other economic events. Instead, these investors make adjustments, as necessary, to accommodate changes in their goals as well as other changes, such as revisions in tax laws — but they basically stick to their same approach for the long term. So be aware of low oil prices, but don’t get so “pumped” about them that you sludge up your consistent investment strategy — because that strategy has the energy to keep you moving toward your important objectives.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes every Thursday at 10:30 AM in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. These are open to all residents and visitors. We cover Computer Basics on the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month, and Advanced Topics the 2nd and 4th Thursday. 5th Thursdays are general question and answer sessions. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. We are just getting to the best parts of our instructions, including computer maintenance, word processing, and working with your photographs. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with and your laptop computer if you want to. I will answer any question you care to ask me. A WORD OF WARNING TO TARA WOODS RESIDENTS: A growing number of my most recent calls have been to un-do the damage done by a new crop of selfproclaimed computer experts in our area, including your neighbor who tells you “I can fix that”! Most of these people are well-intentioned, but simply don’t know what they are doing. They may tell you to install free software from the Internet without realizing that virtually all of these programs destroy the security and stability of your computer, or they take several hours working on a problem that could be fixed in twenty minutes (leaving you in worse shape than when they started), or they say that they can speed up your system by removing Temporary Internet Files or Cookies (a sure sign that they don’t know what they are talking about). I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, and teaching computers since 1968, and I’ve seen this over and over. Before you let anyone work on your computer, ask them where and how they learned to do it, and how much experience they have. If they can’t give you a satisfactory answer, DON’T LET THEM TOUCH YOUR MACHINE! Please call me with any questions or comments at 6520488. I can help you with any of your computer needs. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

March 2015 Florida Gardening Calendar What to Plant Annuals: Plant heat tolerant annuals for color such as crossandra, gazania, melampodium, and zinnia, that will last into fall. Bulbs: Plant gladiola corms 6” apart and 4” deep and stake as they grow. Plant caladiums for a showy tropical display all summer. Herbs: In addition to their culinary value, many herbs are ornamental and attract butterflies to the garden. Vegetables: Warm season crops, such as sweet corn, cucumber, watermelon, and pepper, should be planted now What to do Trees and shrubs: Prune when new growth begins after the end of the dormant season. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade but before new buds set.

Mulch: Renew or add mulch in landscape beds to reduce weeds and retain moisture. Fertilize lawns: If not done in February, fertilize lawns this month. Pests: Monitor landscape plants for insects, especially for the presence of aphids on tender new growth. Insects become more active during warm weather. Fertilize: Palms and ornamental shrubs if not done last month. Choose a fertilizer based on each plant’s needs. Examine lawns for problems: Identify damaging insects and spot treat early to prevent widespread damage. Rule out cultural problems, such as irrigation failure, before treatment. ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen…..someone has said “it takes a village”. No truer words were ever used as it relates to a stage production. It does in fact take a village. Without our “villagers”, no show could be put on in Tara Woods. Before the show opens, we would like to thank everyone who had a part in making the idea of a show into the reality of a show. There is no way to remember everyone. So even though it is a cliché, rather than miss thanking anyone, I will say this: thanks again to all of you from The Entertainers and from me personally. Shortly after you receive this issue of the Columns our show will be on stage and then over for another year. Right now there is still time to get your tickets for “Said The Spider To The Spy”. • • • •

March 13th and 14th, Friday night and Saturday night $ 7.00 per person when purchased before the show $ 9.00 per person at the door Doors open at 6:30 PM; the show starts at 7:00 PM • On sale at the door and at Saturday Coffee or before Bingo on Tuesday night • (NO food or drink allowed in for the productions) We have done all we can to convince you to join us. We need you. If you are new to the community, if this is your first show, or if you have been to every show, we need you all in the audience to show support for our efforts, to support our fellow Tara Woodites and to keep the arts alive in our community. Come out…laugh and enjoy! Pat-one, Stage Manager Entertainers
