CHRISTMAS GOLF CART
PARADE
It was a beautiful evening lighting up the streets of Tara Woods with the annual Golf Cart Parade. Folks started gathering at the Clubhouse around 5:00 PM to line up and socialize. Santa himself, on his impressive sleigh, kicked off the procession. Each cart on its own was extraordinary and reflected the work and creativity of its owner. All the carts together were truly a sight to behold. After a tour around the Community, the residents gathered in the Clubhouse for caroling, hot chocolate, cookies and treats.
Well done to ALL! ~ Lou Dunning

Happy New Year, Tara Woods! Hope you all had a Merry Christmas. It is unbelievable that the holidays have come and gone. Parties, Christmas caroling, the Golf Cart Parade are long gone for another year. We have all had way too much to eat and our New Year’s resolutions are on our mind. We have all promised ourselves that we will attend exercise classes, do yoga, swim laps in the pool,

Consider Some New Year’s Financial Resolutions As the year winds down, you may want to look ahead to see which areas of your life you can improve in 2019. Perhaps you’ll decide to exercise more, eat healthier foods, reconnect with old friends or volunteer at a school or charitable organization. All these goals are certainly worthwhile – but you also may want to add some New Year’s financial resolutions to your list. Here are a few ideas to consider: Boost contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Good news! Contribution limits will be increasing for many employer-sponsored retirement plans. For 2019, you can contribute up to $19,000 (up from $18,500 in 2018), or $25,000 (up from $24,500 in 2018) if you’re 50 or older to your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while any earnings growth is tax-deferred. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2019, you can put in up to $6,000 in a traditional or Roth IRA (up from $5,500 in 2018), or $7,000 (up from $6,500) if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be taxdeductible, depending on your income, and any earnings growth is tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59 ½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. You can put most types of investments – stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on – into an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan. Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping in to your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair. Control your debts. Do what you can to keep your debts under control. Ultimately, the less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future. Don’t overreact to financial market volatility. In 2018 – especially the last few months of the year – we saw considerable market volatility, with huge drops and big gains in rapid succession. What will 2019 bring? It’s always difficult – and usually futile – trying to forecast the market’s performance over the course of an entire year. But, in any case, try not to overreact to whatever ups and downs we may experience. Instead, continue pursuing an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Following these suggestions can help you become a better investor in 2019 – and beyond.

FMO NEWS TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS Can someone tell me where 2018 has gone? I was finally getting used to writing 18 and now I’ve got to start all over with 19. The FMO meetings are in full swing, and on Friday, January 11th, you can walk or ride your bike or golf cart to the Clubhouse to attend the January 11th meeting. Tara Woods is playing host to FMO representatives and their guests from around the district and state. If you attended past meetings, you know what wonderful refreshments are provided by the host community. Please bring cookies, cakes, pastries, etc. to the Clubhouse on Friday, January 11th, by 10:00 AM. They can be purchased or homemade. If you put them on a plate, please make sure your name is on it, so it can be returned to you after the meeting. Meetings start at 1:00 PM and last approximately 2 hours. About half way through there is a refreshment break. A lot of information is transmitted at these meetings and there is always time for a question and answer period. You are encouraged to attend, not only to support your community, but, who knows, you may obtain information that may be beneficial to you in the future. Membership is not a requirement to attend. As the old adage goes, there is strength in numbers. Membership applications and mail-in envelopes are available on the back bulletin board. Let’s show the FMO Board what a great community we are. Thank you for your donations of refreshments and support. Stuart Berman

JOKE OFF #3 WINNER DECLARED Season #3 for the “Joke Off” took place at Saturday Morning Coffee on December 15th. The lucky coffee goers were entertained by three who were vying for this year’s title of TWBJT – Tara Woods Best Joke Teller. The contestants were: Ann Millette, Lou Dunning and Don Franks, who was the winner from Season #2. They each shared their jokes hoping the audience would applaud loudly. But we may have only one winner. Again as in year’s past, George Daly used the official sound meter to determine the winner. The determining factor was the volume of the audience’s applause. Very scientific. At first we had a tie between Ann and Lou. The winner was determined by only one point on the sound meter. When the results came in this year’s winner received the real fake gold crown proudly from Frank Millette who placed the crown on the head of Lou Dunning. When you see Lou around the community make sure to congratulate him on his victory, and possibly ask him to tell you a joke or two. Pat Dunning

ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES by Janet Daly Coming up: January: The only activity on the calendar for January for Activities is undecorating the Clubhouse and taking down the outside lights and decorations. Saturday morning, January 5th, after coffee, please help your Club undecorate your tree and help Activities by taking down the Clubhouse decorations. I hope to have the outside lights done before Saturday. If anyone would like to help, please let me know. Please have new storage boxes available by January 5th, if they are needed for your group. Thank you to the Canadian Club for providing the refreshments on Saturday. Thank You! Thank you to a great Decorating Committee that worked hard to light up the outside entrance and boulevard. This would not have been accomplished without the help of Linda Hoos, George Daly, Pat & Ed Sparany, Sue Van Sickle, Bob Kuhns, Pat & Lou Dunning and Mark Van Ort. Also, a big thank you to Darlene Bradley, our Community Manager, for her support for this project. We learned a lot this year and hope to make next year a little more sparkly and bright. Thank you to the Clubs and individuals who donated funds to help us expand next year and cover some of the expenses of this season. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of this venture next year. The two lake Christmas trees were successfully floated with few problems this year, thanks to George Daly and his crew of new and enthusiastic workers: Carl Marquis, Mike Curtis, Wally Harju and Bob Clark. Also, thanks to Mark Van Ort for successfully transporting the trees to and from their destinations. Thank you to Judy Machnicz and the New England Club for hosting the Christmas Party. The food and music was first class and the tables were waited on attentively by members of the New England Club. It was a wonderful opportunity to wish our Tara Woods friends and neighbors Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Thank you to Santa’s elves, Mike Girty, George Daly and Joe Van Sickle for preparing Santa’s sleigh again this year, and to Santa, a.k.a. Al Dion, for leading the Christmas Golf Cart Parade. The golf carts looked great as usual and a fun time was had by all. Thank you to everyone who provided goodies for the Caroling afterward. ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…..here we are in January, a new year and new outlooks. You now may turn your attention to the fun events we have planned here in Paradise. One of the most fun events will be our play, “Red Velvet Cake War” performed on stage for your enjoyment. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 8th or 9th. Tickets will go on sale early next month and will be a reasonable $7.00 per person. The sale will be at Coffee on Saturday mornings or before Bingo on Tuesday night, as usual tickets will be on sale at the door. Another item to look for will be the raffle for the QUILT that our very own ladies have created for the show. This month we will be beginning to sell raffle tickets for this quilt sight unseen; so, we will be selling “FUTURES” on this quilt. These tickets will be sooooo very inexpensive – $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 – such a deal. When the quilt is finished and exhibited, the price goes up. So, purchase your tickets early before the quilt is unveiled because then the price will be $2.00 each or 6 for $10.00. We want to thank the many hands that helped create this work of art. We have so many talented people in our community; we must treasure these artists among us. In February and March, the raffle tickets will be available at the same time as the show tickets. The raffle will be held during the intermission of the Saturday performance. Since we are having you put your name and phone number on the ticket you will not need to be present to win. The proceeds for this quilt will go to a wonderful cause – the Ronald McDonald House. So, be a savvy shopper and save money by buying early (all we women know the concept, spend a little now to save money). REMINDER – Entertainers meeting will be January 26th following Saturday Morning Coffee. “enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success...nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” – Emerson Pat Dunning, Stage Manager for the Entertainers pdunning46@gmail.com or 239-599-4490
TARA WOODS MASONIC CLUB We wish all a happy/healthy new year. In as much as we have so many new residents, we thought that many of you are unaware of our being. Also, some might be members of the craft. We originated about 1992 when our park was comparatively new. We are not sanctioned, but function as an informal group meeting in brotherly love and friendship. We have a breakfast meeting the first Tuesday of the month during the winter season. We also have an annual luncheon with our wives or significant others and invite our Masonic widows as our guests. If interested, or for more information, give me a call. Bob Cooney, PM • 731-2158

BAILEY SPEAKS Happy 2019 New Year to all of my four-footed along with my 2-legged human friends. 2018 went so fast I’m still trying to play catch-up on chasing my tail. Boy, I enjoyed seeing all of the holiday Christmas trees decorated in very festive ways, especially the lights (who needs to take me to Vegas when I see all of the golf carts and homes all decked out)! Yes, we had days that had cool to cold spells, not unlike up north (the dreaded snows). Of course, if you have an old freezer in your household that needs defrosting – there’s your icy conditions. As for our blizzard, every home has that Mexican Weed that looks like snow which continues to grow uncontrollably, and that is one weed that is virtually disturbing to one and all. But, thank goodness, no hurricanes occurred in our area in 2018 like Irma did in 2017. Our prayers go out always for our troops, the families who lost their homes in the California wildfires, floods, Hurricane Michael in Mexico City, Florida, along with the families of loved ones of the shootings that took place this year. Quite disturbing to not know the when, where, why, who or what is the motive behind all this. Hopefully for 2019, wishing good health and good will to all mankind and the environment we call home. Anyway, on this segment of Bailey Speaks I’m just listing little sayings or quotes from a Dog Lover’s Journal. So, Live Love and Woof – Only my dog (or cat) understands me. – It is a strange thing, love. Nothing but love has made the dog leave his wild freedom, to become the servant of man. – I’ve seen a look in dogs’ eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts. Hmm…. – Try it on the dog. – A man can do worse sometimes, than follow a trip his dog gives him. – The dog who meets with a good master is the happier of the two. – The plain fact that my dog loves me more than I love him is undeniable. – It was surely not for nothing that Spot, Max or even Rover is dogs’ most common names. – A dog likes to obey. It gives them security. – For many dogs, begging is a full-time job. – Every dog has his day. Well so, love me, love my dog. My time is up for Bailey Speaks. Remember to pick up after us while on your outing and especially our Dog Park area when in use. Happy Tails, Till next month Bailey P.S. Happy New Year 2019!

THE GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club wishes Everyone a Very Happy New Year As a reminder, the Trash and Treasure this year is March 2nd. Our next meeting is Saturday, February 9th, to discuss the Trash and Treasure. If you are not a member and would like to join, or just would like to volunteer to help, please come to this meeting. Remember the monies received from this event enable us to have the Fashion Show FOR FREE EACH YEAR. PLEASE start to put aside any items you no longer want, and remember any electrical items must work, and we accept clothing along with all items for the house. Did you know: There are more than 20 butterflies and moths listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Most of these species are found in the United States and may become extinct due to loss of their habitat. More than 765 species of butterflies occur in North America, north of Mexico. Florida is home to a total of 187 butterfly species, the most of any state east of the Mississippi River. You can help butterflies in your own back yard by growing both host plants
for larvae and nectar plants for adults. Visit the University of Florida’s website for a list of plants you can grow to benefit butterflies in your particular region of the state. One of these butterflies is: The Florida monarch butterfly whose population has dropped 80 percent since 2005 (from November 8th, 2018, Florida Museum of Natural History). A 37year survey of monarch populations in North Central Florida shows that caterpillars and butterflies have been declining since 1985 and have dropped by 80 percent since 2005. They found that monarchs’ springtime departure from Mexico is timed to coincide with optimal growth of milkweed in the southeastern U.S. While adult monarch butterflies can feed from a variety of plants, their young depend on milkweed as their sole source of nutrition, storing up the plant’s toxins to ward off predators. The Monarch butterfly will lay hundreds of eggs on milkweed over their brief lifetimes, but just over 2 percent of eggs survive to become fully grown caterpillars. We can help the Monarch by 1. Not Using Pesticides in Our Gardens.
2. Planting Native Milkweed. 3. Create a Monarch Way Station. 4. Learn More. 5. Spread the Word. Some butterfly gardeners have spoken to Linda Hoos, about native milkweed and other native butterfly plants. There are two native nursery’s Bill Milligan told Linda about: All Native Plants and Landscape in Fort Myers 239-939-9663. There is also one on Sanibel called SCCF Native Landscape 239-472-1932. Don’t forget when your milkweeds get leggy and you start to see new growth at the bottom you can cut your plants back to 6inches. If you plant butterfly plants in rotation, then you will always have nectar and host plants available and your butterflies will love you. The Garden Club wishes to Thank Everyone who has planted milkweed in their gardens. Rachelle DellaRocca Linda Hoos What to plant January Bedding Plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include begonia, browallia, lo-
belia, dianthus, dusty miller, and nicotiana. Bulbs: Winter is a great time to plant bulbs that will bloom this spring. Some to try are Clivia lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Herbs: Many herbs will thrive now that temperatures are cooler, including tarragon, thyme, dill, fennel, and any of the mints. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops including beet, cabbage, turnip, lettuce, and broccoli. What to do January Rejuvenate the landscape: After the danger of freezing temperatures, it’s a good time to plant woody shrubs. Water frequently to get new plantings off to a good start. Irrigation: Plants may need water if temperatures remain higher than normal and rainfall is scarce. Shrubs and Trees: Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form. Arbor Day: Florida observes Arbor Day on the 3rd Friday of January. To celebrate, plant a tree in your yard or community. Cold Protection: If a frost or freeze is predicted, bring sensitive plants like
orchids inside. Water sensitive plants in the landscape thoroughly 12-24 hours before a freeze and cover. Pests: To control scale on citrus, shrubs, and deciduous fruit trees, apply horticultural oil while plants are dormant. Apply copper spray to mangos after bloom. TARA WOODS Thanksgiving Dinner The Clubhouse buzzed with activity on Thanksgiving Day from early in the morning through early evening. Tom and Donna Erhardt’s team cooked up a celebration that the Pilgrims would have been proud to attend! One of their guests provided a little history lesson before the blessing. It served as a reminder of the origin of Thanksgiving and recognition of the many blessings we as Americans are so fortunate to enjoy. Tara Woods residents supplied wonderful side dishes from mac and cheese to a wide assortment of vegetables and, of course, delicious cranberry concoctions of all descriptions. The turkey and ham were cooked to perfection by master chefs Tom Erhardt and Spike Makia. The dessert tables presented quite the dilemma – so many choices…pumpkin pie, cherry pie, chocolate pie, cream puffs, apple pie and much more! Teen Challenge and our local fire department received the leftovers. Several door prizes were given away and Sue Cook went home with the first prize from the Social Drawing – $82.00. Each attendee, 165 of them, received a packet of wet wipes, and the overall atmosphere was so very festive. Many thanks are extended to all those who worked tirelessly to put the Thanksgiving celebration together. It was truly a blessing and just one more thing to be thankful for this year at Tara Woods. NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY CLUB Thank you to everyone for the great food at our Christmas Party/Meeting in December and for your generous contributions to our designated Christmas gift recipients: The Salvation Army and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. We know they will be appreciated. “What goes up, must come down.” Put Saturday, January 5th, on your calendar to undecorate our Christmas tree and the Clubhouse after Saturday Morning Coffee at 9:00 AM. While you’re at your calendar, add Sunday, January 6th, at 5:00 PM for our January meeting featuring Soups, Stews & Chowders. I am very glad to have a number of new residents from New York and New Jersey attending our meetings. I hope you felt welcomed and will add the Club meetings to your social calendar. Please keep me informed if you’ve changed or dropped your email address. I use email to contact everyone about upcoming events or other notifications. It also serves as our membership list. Here’s hoping that everyone has a very healthy and happy New Year! As we start off the New Year, help will be needed with taking down the Christmas tree. This will take place about 9:00 AM after Saturday Morning Coffee, on Saturday, January 5th. For our meeting on Friday, January 11th, the Club will be providing hamburgers, hot dogs, and buns. The members will be asked to bring sides and dessert. As usual, the sign-up sheet for the sides and desserts, as well as for set-up and clean-up, will be posted on the Club board. Valentine’s Day is also just around the corner, and again our Midwest Club is hosting the party. Help is always needed in various ways. LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you.
The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem. (911 or 239-477-1000) THIS MONTH’S TIPS: I keep coming back with tips on SCAMMING. I was contacted by one of our residents and was told he was scammed by a caller offering Direct TV for $69.00 per month. All he needed to do was pay several months in advance to obtain the discount. Needless to say, no discount, and the deposit went south. Also, never give out personal information, credit card numbers and social security numbers to strangers or over unknown phone calls. On December 6th, the Computer Club began a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer, including computer types and components, the Windows Desktop, programs, files, folders, games, internet, email, and multi-media, as well as an overview of WordPad and MS Paint. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects; this year we plan to examine Windows 10, ebooks, social media, smart phones, tablets, and Google and Android devices. Other topics will be added later as time allows. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group,

The Tennis Association hosted the first Round Robin of the season on November 25th. The weather cooperated and a fun day was had by all who participated. Our monthly meeting was held prior to our post event dinner. New officers were approved; they are Roger Rafferty, President; Fred Puhlfuerst, interim Vice President; Janice Johnston, Secretary; and Ed Malatesta, an at large board member. Carole Neveu continues as Treasurer.
Thank you to these volunteers for taking these positions. Bill & Mary Nothnagel are new members of the Tennis Association; we extend a warm welcome to them. Maintenance of the courts was discussed. Hometown America’s mainte-

nance people will blow debris off the courts once a week during the season. The Tennis Association ladies have volunteered to clean the tops of the nets for the season, and the men have volunteered to help Hometown’s maintenance people put up and take down the wind screens. Thank you to these volunteers. The nets have already been cleaned and they look very nice now. A general discussion was held about the condition of the courts. It was agreed that they definitely need work, particularly the surfaces. We will be asking Hometown America to please take care of this issue. The next Round Robin is scheduled for Sunday, January 27th. I wish everyone a joyous and blessed holiday season. See you on the courts. – Roger Rafferty TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s Team – Angels After our first two matches, the Tara Woods Angels were in second place with 10 wins and only 2 losses. Conditions on the courts for our second match of the season were completely different from those of our first match, which, I believe, had temps in the 90’s. When we were warming up at the Lake Fairways courts at 8:30 AM on November 29th, the temperature was only around 50 degrees – what a difference! Despite the cold weather, the Angels were successful in winning 4 sets and losing only 2 that day, with one of the wins being a tie-break. After the match, we enjoyed lunch with the Lake Fairways team in their Sand Trap Restaurant. It was a good way to end the morning with a nice social atmosphere after the competitiveness of the tennis match that was played earlier. Our third match of the season on December 6th had us traveling to Pine Lakes; their team (the Panthers) had been in first place with 11 wins and only 1 loss. Well, we were ready for a tough match. We had very competitive tennis matches and our team played very well that day; we won 5 sets and lost only 1. Again, like the previous match, one of the wins was a tie-break. Because of that 5-win finish against Pine Lakes, we are now in first place with 15 wins and only 3 losses. That is a great start to the season for our team! – Linda
Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White Team – Stallions We, the Tara Woods White Team known as the Stallions, have 10 people on the team. As a team, we decided to use all our players each week in order to maintain the good friendship we have developed. Some players play twice, while others play once. This gives each player the opportunity to play each week and enjoy the friendly competition and to socialize with the other teams afterward. So far, the team has performed very well and we are presently in second place. Way to go Stallions!!! Cheers. – Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers We started our second month of league tennis with a split with the Lake Fairways Cougars, 3 wins and 3 losses – not as good as we would have liked. On December 6th we played the Six Lakes Spartans and played a better match. The Tigers won 4 sets and lost 2; that placed us at about mid league in the standings. We are experiencing a player shortage that has not been expected. Some players are still not in Tara Woods and some are off with injuries. We have one more match before the holiday break. We play the Pine Lakes Pitbulls on Thursday, December 13th, at Pine Lakes. We would like to thank the number of our Tara Woods excellent fans who show up at our away matches. They are there with exciting cheers to encourage our players. THANKS…. – Dale Holat Blue Team – Mustangs As I write this article on December 4th, we are entering our bye week with the following position in the league standings: We have the most total points, that being 19; percentage-wise we are in second place by less than 2%. We have had a real team effort by all our team members, with every member winning at least 75% of their matches. We have been able to play all our matches so far using only our roster players, but this will change as the Christmas holidays are here. We will play one more match in December and then begin a schedule in January that will give us a better indication of what the league will look like. We are all looking forward to our first Tara Woods showdown with the Tigers on January 17th. Please mark this date as “must see tennis”! As always, stay safe in your tennis play and enjoy good health as well! – Ed Malatesta ROUND ROBIN It was a beautiful Sunday morning at Tara Woods for our initial Round Robin
of the season. Most all who were there had a good time. A very nice variety of snacks was coordinated by Jean Moriarty and Gene Dickie. Also, a very nice dinner was coordinated by Kathy & Roger Rafferty and Gail Bergin-Stewig for the Tennis Association Meeting that evening. Now we can look forward to a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and New Year. There is no Round Robin scheduled for December due to the holidays. The event will commence again starting in January. As a reminder, the schedule is as follows: January 27th February 24th March 31st The Sign-up Sheet with all the details for the January Round Robin will be on the bulletin board at the tennis courts by January 2nd. Again, the Tennis Association is encouraging all our neighbors to participate in this event. I want to emphasize that this is a fun event where we all try to set aside our competitive nature and just have a good time. If anyone has any questions regarding the Round Robin, call me at 239-9892669. Hope to see you there. – Jon Gold Round Robin Dinner Thank You We would like to thank Roger Rafferty, Tom Stewig, Louise Frederick, Judy & Dale Holat, Mary & Bill Nothnagel, and Arlene Greene for helping to serve the meal and for helping with the clean-up afterwards. It was greatly appreciated. – Kathy Rafferty and Gail Bergin-Stewig. Submitted by Linda Engel
