Resident Appreciation Weekend
The annual Resident Appreciation Weekend for 2015 will be on Friday and Saturday, February 27th and 28th. It has been announced at the April Homeowners Meeting that the theme for the parade would be “Outer Space” and the Grand Marshal would be chosen in the fall. Several groups jointly submitted a written request to the steering committee for a theme change and suggested a couple of possibilities. Their request was granted. The new theme for the 2015 parade will be “Fairy Tales”. The fun-filled weekend is made possible by all the caring volunteers within our community and the generosity of Hometown America. It takes an army of volunteers who give much of their time and energy to make it all happen. Hometown continues a tradition started by others many years ago by financing the entire weekend. They are all to be commended for everything they do, though it often goes unappreciated. For those of you who have not yet experienced Appreciation Weekend, the festivities begin Friday morning at 8:00 AM with free coffee and bakery items in the Clubhouse. At 9:00 AM anyone who wants to participate in the golf cart/bicycle poker run will gather at the Craft Building to receive the “clues”.w Activities on both Friday and Saturday are between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. A variety of games involving most of the amenities at Tara Woods are played, although not in the usual way! Between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM a free lunch is served on the Verandah -- usually hot dogs, chips and a soda or water. At 2:30 PM there is free BINGO for everyone -- with many $5.00 prizes. A big part of the weekend’s fun is collecting tickets for chances to win prizes every time you participate in an amenities game (or for each hour you work during the weekend). You might even be a daily winner of any of the games for your gender! Friday’s final activity, around 3:30 PM, is for partners who want to enter the egg toss, immediately followed by the water balloon toss. Saturday morning’s parade around the lake at 10:00 AM is a showcase of creativity by the groups and individuals displaying decorated golf carts, costumes and other “Fairy Tale” themed ideas. A Grand Marshal will lead the
Tara Woods Homeowners Association – www.twha.us
| ISLAND VISITOR PUBLISHING, LLC | www.twha.us parade. Six substantial money prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd – one each for the best groups and for the best individuals. The winners are chosen by judges from outside the park. There are also other marching units that complete the parade. The weekend festivities conclude Saturday night at 7:00 PM with a dance and awards ceremony. Prizes for the parade and game winners are awarded. Then there are random drawings for prizes from all the tickets given for those who participate and volunteer. The activities for the weekend have been the same for many years and some feel it is time for a change. Others like the agenda the way it is. The steering committee is open to any comments and suggestions, including nominations for parade themes, grand marshals, committee members and changes in the activities. However, any changes you want to make to the games should include your new replacement game plan. All comments and suggestions will be discussed and considered at the committee meetings. A list of members will be posted on the bulletin board. Whether this is your first Appreciation Weekend or your fifteenth, everyone can get involved to help make the weekend fun. How much fun you allow yourself to have is entirely up to you !! ~Polly Brown

From the President The following is an article that has been on the internet for awhile. It’s been attributed to a number of different authors and I found there to be different versions. I’m passing it on, taking some liberties myself and making some minor changes. It was obviously written by a senior citizen of advanced age, but I thought it appropriate and thought-provoking for people of all ages. It is titled, ...And Then It Is Winter... You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems like yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet, in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those
older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends and family members are retired and getting grey, they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d be. How often have we heard, “I’m becoming my mother!” How often has it happened that just taking a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it’s mandatory! ‘cause if I don’t of my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit! And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done...
things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime. So, if you’re not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. Whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long! Life goes by too fast. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!
Janet Daly “Life” is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Live it well! Enjoy today! Do something fun! Be happy! ”

Consider the following: − − − − − − − − − − − − − −
Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be. Your kids are becoming you. Going out is good … Coming home is better. You forget names … But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!! You realize you're never going to be really good at anything.... especially golf. The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore. You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.. You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... "what?" You notice everything they sell in stores is “sleeveless”. What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody whispers. You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet ... 2 of which you will never wear. But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, Old friends!

A driver was stuck in a traffic jam on the highway outside Washington D.C. Nothing was moving. Suddenly, a man knocks on the window. The driver rolls down the window and asks, “What’s going on?” “Terrorists have kidnapped Congress, and they are asking for a $100 million dollar ransom. If their demands aren’t met they are going to douse them all in gasoline and set them on fire. We are going from car to car looking for donations.” “How much is everyone giving on average?” asked the driver. The man replies, “About a gallon.”

October 18 in the meeting room. Hope you will be able to attend. As the Entertainers enter into the busy season, we should try to slow down and enjoy life. Think about our group. We spend months practicing our play for two shows presented months from now. We are not in a hurry; we take each rehearsal, one at a time, trying to enjoy and learn from each one – hopefully, getting better each week. So join us – slow down, enjoy life, remember life is not a rehearsal, it is the one we get.

So, Ladies and Gentlemen … well, school started and soon we will be cramming for our midterm finals … no … no wait … excuse me, that was in our distant past. Let me start over. Welcome back to those of you who have returned from wherever you have been. We hope you have returned renewed and refreshed, anxious to jump back into life here in Paradise. There was a change to our Entertainers this summer.
Claudia and Dick Weiss moved to Gulf Coast Village. Claudia, who is our Director, is returning a few days each week to continue in her role. We will miss seeing her and Dick every day, but we thank her so much for her dedication and commitment. This month we start rehearsals in the Clubhouse. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, October 2nd at 8:00 AM, then each Monday and Thursday at 8:00 AM until the play is performed in March (naturally we miss the holidays). The Entertainer’s business meeting will be held after coffee on Saturday,

THE GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club welcomes back everyone who was away for the summer. I am sure lots of new memories have been made. Garden Club members (and anyone who wishes to become a member) please mark your calendars: The Garden Club meeting is Saturday, October 11th immediately after coffee. This is a very important meeting, since it is the only meeting before the Fashion Show on Friday, November 14th. For those new to Tara Woods, the Fashion Show is always a fun event and a great way to start the new season. This year our
theme is “Cruising”, which so many of us like to do. Anthony’s, our sponsor, is the perfect store for shopping for clothes that we need to take with us. This year we have additional fun: Jackie, a Mary Kay representative, has volunteered to make up the models, and she is bringing Katie who will be bringing wigs for us to see. As always, the Fashion Show is a free event, open to all residents of Tara Woods. Instead, you are requested to bring a salad to share. Please split your salad into two serving dishes to be placed on tables at each side of the Clubhouse;
cheese and crackers will be on the tables supplied by the Club. If you are not a salad maker, you could donate wine which is limited to 20 people. Please see the signup sheet in the Clubhouse, starting October 14th, for all information. There will be favors at the door, raffles of “Dinner and a Movie”, a basket of Mary Kay cosmetics, and of course $$$$. If you have signed up to be a model and cannot attend the meeting, please call me. PROUD PARENT A note to all who have asked about my son, Patrick Breen. Patrick is now appearing in the new CBS drama, “Madame Secretary”. He is playing the Director of the CIA. It debuted on Sunday, September 21, at 8:00 PM. He also appeared on the show “Royal Pains” this past summer. Agatha Breen (Photo of Patrick Breen)
60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Clif and Vi McLaughlin’s 60th wedding anniversary was on September 7, 2014. In June they celebrated in San Jose, CA with family and friends. Vi McLaughlin
INTERESTING SUMMER When I arrived in New England on July 20th little did I know that I was about to see history in the making. My daughter and son who work at Market Basket headquarters in Tewksbury, MA had walked out of their jobs in support of their CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas, and their bosses who had been terminated by a very greedy cousin, along with 90% of all of the truck drivers, warehouse workers, and office personnel. Two very large rallies were held with thousands of employees and customers who also boycotted the stores and picketed for six weeks. The employees did this without pay, for a man they respected and who treated them like real people; also because they could see what the new CEOs were about to do - cut their pay and benefits and raise prices in the stores. It was amazing to see all of the sup-
port from people all over New England. This almost brought the company to bankruptcy. Store parking lots were empty. The two new CEOs had no clue what they were doing. Well, it took six weeks, but history was made. Mr. Arthur T. Demoulas made a deal to purchase everything. The greedy cousin and his sister walk away with 1.5 billion dollars. Everyone has their jobs back. All of the stores never closed their doors, but had practically no business because of the boycott. The stores were immediately restocked. The headquarter employees worked all Labor Day weekend to get everything back in shape. They should be very proud – New Englanders never give up. Linda McKay

FOUR REASONS NOT TO FEED WILDLIFE Editor’s note: With the dangerous wildlife (alligators, black bear, panther, wild hogs, raccoons, etc.) which we live with in South Florida, I have copied this article from the Humane Society of the United States’ webpage. Please DO NOT FEED the turtles, alligators, Sand Hill cranes, etc. which are in our community. It is not good for them nor for us. Plus, it is extremely dangerous and hazardous to you and your pets. Please read below for more information. Feeding wild animals, whether on purpose or not, does more harm than good. This swan, a patient at our Cape Wildlife Center, developed a deformity called “angel wing,” a result of a diet high in bread or other “people foods.” Deborah Millman/The HSUS We know they’re cute and they might seem hungry, but feeding most wild animals (with a few exceptions) just isn’t a good idea. Here’s why. 1. “People” food isn’t good for animals. Human foods aren’t nutritious enough for animals and may cause serious health problems. A deformity called “angel wing” is commonly found in ducks, geese, swans and other waterfowl who are fed white bread, popcorn, crackers, or other people food.
So what what can youyou do for So can dowildlife? for wildlife? Stop the unintentional food supply: •

Rinse all recyclable glass and plastic containers to remove any food remnants and odors. Some animals, like skunks, can get their heads stuck in containers and wind up starving to death. Cut and/or crush plastic containers, and cut each ring of plastic six-pack carriers. Feed your pets inside. Make sure plastic food wrap is rinsed and secured in a tied bag or securely covered garbage can. When visiting parks and similar settings, clean up after yourself and follow the rules regarding wildlife. Encourage others to do the same.
Ref: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/feed_wildlife.html Ref: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/feed_wildlife.html Below are only some of the dangerous wild animals which live in our area. Yes, this is true in the Tara Woods lakes, too! Feeding the turtles encourages the alligators to come near. Alligators do not care if they are feeding on your bread, small dog, child, or your arm. Please DO NOT FEED THE TURTLES by the Gazebo nor go swimming nor wading in the lakes. It is also hazardous to walk your dog near the edge of the lakes. Alligators move much faster than you think. Keep a safe distance away from the lakes’ edge.
Below are only some of the dangerous wild animals which live in our area.
2. It makes wild animals lose their natural fear of people. Feeding can make large, potentially dangerous animals become too comfortable in residential or recreational areas. Once animals learn they can panhandle for food, they can become a nuisance—or even worse, a safety risk. 3. Feeding wildlife from or near vehicles is dangerous to animals, people, and property. Animals can be hit by moving vehicles or might try to enter vehicles in search of food. In Yosemite National Park in 1998, more than 1,100 vehicles were broken into by black bears—causing more than $630,000 in damages. 4. Wild animals who depend on people for food can cause injuries or spread disease. When wild animals gather for food handouts, it can cause crowding and competition. These unnatural conditions increase the chances of fighting and injury among animals. It can also increase the spread of diseases, some of which may be transmitted to pets and humans.

I was in the local coffee shop recently and desperately needed to pass gas. The place was packed and the music was really loud so I figured no one would be the wiser. I timed my farts with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs I started to feel better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me… And suddenly I remembered I was listening to my iPod. …and how was your day?
