School board rules on stricter dress code for entire campus by GERI LEMMONS staff writer
A
ccording to many different sources that are a part of making the on-campus rules for Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, there is about to be a school dress code implemented starting the next school semester. Sami Walker, freshman psychology major, said they had this kind of school dress code when she was in high school. “I can’t believe that at a college level that they are actually going to restrict us on what we can and can’t wear,” Walker said. What this means is that the professors and different staff members will be walking around to check if students are complying with the dress code. If the students are not dressed in the appropriate dress code attire then the professor or staff member will tell the student that they need to leave the class or that they need to go home and change into something that is in compliance with the school dress code. Some of the dress code rules
are that women can only wear leggings if the shirt that they are wearing comes down to fingertip length and this also goes the same for all shorts and dresses. Men and women can no longer wear hats when they are in a classroom. They may put them on outside, but as soon as they set foot in a building they must take off any type of hat that is on their head. Now there is also a new rule that says that no one is allowed to wear T-shirts that are affiliated with another university. For example students are not allowed to wear any other Texas university T-shirts and this includes any other Texas A&M. Mary Smoot, junior kinesiology major, said she thinks this dress code is going to be really helpful and that maybe it is preparing students for the future. “I see girls walking around looking the way that they look and I think wow, who would wear that.?I feel like this dress code will just make things easier and less uncomfortable for students

who feel like a student is dressed in an unprofessional manner,” Smoot said. This dress code will come after the summer and professors will have meetings and different briefings about what students can and cannot wear before the new school year starts. This is some-
thing new the school is trying out and after the summer, they will fully enforce the new dress code rules. Students will receive emails containing details about the dress code during the summer and more information will be coming soon.

Underwear beware, theif on loose ISLAND WAVES
by ABBEY WEAVER staff writer
C
amden Miramar has done a lot to make Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi students feel safe. Card-entry buildings, locked doors and attentive RA’s. All of the security has been more than enough over the years with basically zero crime within the on-campus living community. But lately it seems there has been a loophole in the Camden surveillance. “I noticed a few of them were gone, and then I came back from Spring Break to an empty drawer,” freshman education major Sabrina Hernandez said about her missing underwear. “They’re calling him the underwear thief. No one even has a clue who could get away with this.” Multiple cases have been brought to the campus police and Camden Miramar representatives about missing underwear. It is normal to
misplace a couple pairs here and there, but these cases are different. Complete collections are gone. Drawers are being cleaned out and after weeks of similar cases, the “underwear thief ” is the top suspect. It sounds silly but dozens of students are turning to officials in anger and frustration. “It’s an inconvenience but most importantly a safety violation.” Hernandez said. Safety and protection are guaranteed to the residences of Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi by Camden Miramar. The most outraging aspect of the crimes is that the security of the students is being jeopardized. The fact that someone has the ability to enter into dozens of residence dorms and steal a portion of their property, and a personal one at that, is unsettling. Campus Police, RA’s and the head staff of Camden are taking steps to find out the identity of the
underwear thief. Unfortunately, it is hard to trust anyone in this kind of situation. “It has to be someone with a master key,” freshman engineering major Valerie Jackson said. “No one else would be able to have access to every building and every room.” Many students whose belongings have been violated and even just terrified students feel they have no one to turn to about the issue. It is unfair to be guaranteed full safety and then to turn around and experience something as traumatic as this especially in such large numbers. Anyone living in the Camden Miramar residence is at risk. The best thing to do is stay alert. Who ever the underwear thief is, is committing these crimes on a daily basis. Be sensitive of suspicious behavior. Get to know ones neighbors and keep an eye out. Hide any valuables one may have in their living space and carry them with one while out

and about. So far only underwear has been reported missing, but it is unclear what this this person is after. Always travel in groups and do not roam around at late hours. Again, stay alert and report any suspicious behavior until campus police release further instructions.
How to tell if your dog is bumming off of you by SLOANE ZAPATA staff writer
D
og owners all around the country think that their dogs are “good boys and girls” but are they really? Have pet owners ever really considered what their dog is contributing to society? With the introduction of social media and advances in technology, dogs are really just not doing that much these days. “I have about four dogs and all of them are complete bums,” said Senior Chris Simm, psychology major. “All they do is lay around the house and expect me to feed them all the time. They don’t even

contribute to rent at all.” If one wants to find out if their dog is truly contributing to society here are some indicators that will help pet owners find out if their dog is, in fact, a bum. 1. If ones dog never helps around the house, (i.e. doing laundry, washing dishes, changing the filter on the fish tank, simple things like that) 2. No motivation to find out the true meaning of life and what are existence on this planet really means in the bigger picture 3. Has not had a job in years and keeps saying “the job markets just really bad right now” 4. Never helps make dinner, like ever. 5. And lastly, the biggest indicator that ones dog is probably just a huge bum, if the dog really thinks that neo-psych band he is in with his friends is going to take off and get signed “any day now” The first step of this process is going to be accepting that ones dog has no ambition. The second stop will be confronting the dog. This will not be an easy process as people cannot actually talk to dogs, but it is what one need to do if they want them to make a change. “I tried tell my dog Fluffy Pants McDoodle that he needed to step out of his comfort zone and try some new things, even if he didn’t

like it,” Simm said. “It didn’t go extremely well. During the entire conversation it really seemed like he wasn’t even paying attention to me. He just kept smelling his butt and running around in circles. Sometimes when I talk to him it just seems like a really one-sided conversation.” Now, this is going to be easy, but it is possible? Another dog owner in the Corpus Christi area was kind enough to share his journey that he took with his dog, and how it changed both of their lives forever. “For a long time I couldn’t get Thrasher to do anything,” said freshman Alexis Salazar, theatre major. “We tried so many different

things, but he wasn’t interested in any of them… One day we just happened to be picking up the mail when the FedEx driver was at our mail box. Just from looking in Thrasher’s eyes I knew that this was what he wanted to do.” Thrasher is now a project manager at FedEx Inc. and he could not be happier. It might not be a conventional job for a dog, but this dog is definitely making his mark on the world. “Every day when I come home and see him in that FedEx uniform it truly gives me hope for all the other dogs that can’t find a job,” Salazar said. “I hope that people will look at my story of struggle and triumph and find hope in it.”

Delicious sugar-filled candy are no more by KACI ALAVAREZ staff writer
S
pring is here, which can mean only one thing...candy. Besides Halloween, Easter is one of the candy industry biggest holidays due to the distribution of chocolate bunnies, candy eggs and golden coins. However, the most praised treat throughout the nation is, Peeps, is now discontinued. People throughout the Corpus Christi area as well as the nation as a whole are outraged. Some people are even going as far as trying to make a homemade version of the marshmallow treat specifically for the Easter holiday. “We have had dozens of angry costumers ever since Peeps were discontinued,” said Dave Robertson, manager of the CVS off of Ennis Joslin and South Padre Island Drive. “They think it is our fault that we do not sell them anymore, but it is not.” Robertson said it began the week after Valentines Day once everyone began his or her festivities for the next upcoming holiday. Angry citizens have been scavenging the city of Corpus Christi just trying to find the sorely missed candy. According to various online news articles that have circled the Internet, the Peeps brand went out of business after the Christmas season due to
the continuous lack of sales that has built up throughout the last couple of years. After the Peeps brand began to release new flavors including cotton candy and fruit punch the people were less than inclined to buy them but now that Peeps are no longer on the shelf, those same people are begging to have them come back. Cassie Sugg, sophomore biomedical science major, said people all around are experiencing anger and breakdowns because of this. “When I walk down my dorm hall, I always hear none stop talk about this whole peep thing,” Sugg said. “People seem so distraught at the fact that they cannot seem to find them anywhere. Like there are other types of candy that exist in the world people, I hope they know that.” Other than attempting to create mock Peeps, people have been doing all they can to cancel the discontinuation of the Peep brand because as they say the “holidays are not the same without them.”

Hit TV show comes to Corpus Christi by GERI LEMMONS staff writer

exas A&M University-Corpus Christi is being visited by a show that is currently on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy and it is calling for student participation. Grey’s Anatomy will be coming to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to look at the medical program in order to find a new backdrop for the show. However that is not all as they are also looking for students to come and audition for the roles of the original cast as young students. ABC producers preferably want students from the theater program, nursing program, and also as those students that resemble or look like anyone of the characters on Grey’s Anatomy. Chris Smith, junior nursing major, said that he heard about this opportunity over the radio and he is really excited. “I think I have a real shot and I hear other people say that I look like
Derek Shepherd all the time,” Smith said. “I think that I am a perfect fit for the role and I think I will make this school proud at the same time.” This is not only an opportunity for the students but it is also a big opportunity for the school to be a part of a show that has been around for so many years. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has the opportunity to be on the small screen and get nationally recognized on every TV across the country. This casting audition is open to the public and anyone is welcome to come out and audition for one of the various roles that are available. The auditions are also open to the professors and they can come out and audition for one of the roles as the young Grey’s Anatomy’s student’s professors that they had when they were in college. Samantha Ross, senior theater major, said she was very excited for the school to have this opportunity and she herself is thinking about sticking around to see how it goes.

Jasmine Robledo is one of the many students who hopes for a chance to become part of the show.
Ross has watched the show for many years and she is so excited for her favorite show to come here. “I know that I am graduating but I just want to see what is going to happen and I want to be a part of a show like that,” Ross said. “I am excited to audition and show them what I have been working for since I
came to college.” The audition process will take place over the summer and for the students and staff that can come they need to make sure they bring their headshots as well as a resume. After casting is over, they will start shooting the summer of the 20162017 school year.

Are you checking your phone enough? ISLAND WAVES
by JONATHAN FORNEY staff writer
T
he old adage since smartphones became the norm has always been along the lines of “put that phone down and enjoy what is going on right in front of you.” As more and more communication can be done on the go, one has to ask, just how much is one missing by NOT paying attention to a screen? Modern technology has allowed for a seemingly infinite stream of information to be at the fingertips of the general public and with that comes limitless productive potential. For example, someone could be bored at a niece’s recital and with a quick slip and a few taps, they have just ordered that very same niece that movie she wanted for her birthday from Amazon. Ones attention was only averted for mere moments, but in that moment a positive difference was made. The possibilities to what one can do with a smartphone and an Internet connection included (but are certainly not limited to): emailing coworkers, messaging loved ones,
getting dinner for loved ones, setting up dates, keeping oneself from forgetting things via reminders, saving ideas, capturing moments and many, many more uses. In addition to helping get things done, the little supercomputers in everyones pockets are great for preventing the fear of missing out (or FOMO). Social media is taking a shift toward including users in moment-to-moment interactions. Apps like Periscope and Facebook’s Live Video allow users to broadcast whatever users are doing at any moment as well as others participating online right along with them. Missed calls, texts and video call requests are all potentially positive experiences that users can miss out on by abiding by imaginary conventions of “politeness” and etiquette. “When I get an email for a flash sale and end up missing it, it’s like my heart just got ripped out of my chest,” sophomore biology major Melissa Charles said. From a logical perspective, why would someone prevent themselves from all the things they can
achieve on a phone? This absurdity is even more apparent given the brevity of mobile interactions. Replying to a text takes a few minutes at most. A picture can be snapped almost instantly. Notifications can be read in seconds. The reasons not to check phones more often pale in comparison to those in favor of the harmless gesture (not on the road, of course). To further cement why people should not value “real-life” interactions over the ones on their cellphones, there are real medical and safety reasons to press a home button over conversing with a pal for the same info. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s own associate professor, Dr. Gregory Buck, offered this to say on the subject. “Technically speaking, looking at a smartphone screen is more sanitary than speaking to another person who is breathing out potential germs and other hazards,” Buck said. All in all, what one feels is worth “missing” by checking their phone a few times is purely a matter of personal preference. That being

said, people should not be opposed to all the things their phones can help them accomplish purely out of a desire to be “considerate” that is not even necessarily merited at all times. The main takeaway from this is as follows: people should not feel ashamed or inconsiderate for wanting to know what is going on outside of their immediate vicinity. Who knows, maybe one could be missing something important?
Drake to stream new album exclusively on Tidal by JONATHAN FORNEY staff writer
F
irst Rihanna offered Tidal subscribers early access to her latest album, “Anti”. Following that Kanye West announced that his album “The Life of Pablo” would only exclusively be offered on the streaming service, much to the dismay of many. Now Drake is dipping a toe in the Tidal waters. The Canadian born rapper announced recently at the music festival, SXSW (South by Southwest), that his upcoming album “Views from the 6”, or “Views” for short, will be the next big name Tidal exclusive album to release. This decision, while upsetting to many, is not completely shocking. As streaming services grow in influence the main draw of users seems to be exclusive deals with popular artists. When told this news, senior MIS major, Brandon Reeves said “No way? My friend has Tidal. I’ll just have to use hers.” Luring consumers away from Spotify, Apple Music and any other services they prefer by corralling their artists behind pay walls in unfortunate for users, but a win-win for services like Tidal. Unlike Spotify and others, Tidal
does not offer a free-ad supported version of its services. Users must pay either $9.99/month for standard definition streaming or $19.99/month for lossless audio following a 30-day free trial. “If the full Tidal switch happens, I hope it happens quickly. Otherwise I’m sure Apple and Spotify will wise up to help their sales,” sophomore mechanical engineering major, Harris Hipp, said. Shortly after releasing, Kanye’s album became one of the most pirated albums in recent years. This shows that users are not all for being forced to pay to listen to their favorite artists. Perhaps this is the fate of Drake’s new project. That being said, as more and more big name artists sign exclusive deals, it seems the industry is shifting towards pay for the strategies one wants. The question of whether lossless audio is worth $20 a month is a matter of personal preference. Artists such as Drake have such broad reaching appeal that fans will find a way to listen, whether that be via Tidal or more illegitimate means. “Views” has been hyped up by Drake and his fans for months and this will continue the seri-

ous dialogue between fans and streaming companies over the issue of content exclusivity. On one hand, the artists have a right to sell their content however they choose. On the other, consumers should not feel like they need to sign up to every service just because it is the only way they can hear their favorite artists. Going forward, things only look more uncertain for the future of the music industry. Artists worried how they would make money from sales as CDs fell to MP3s and once again as MP3s fell to streaming. Perhaps
now the issue is which service to sign exclusive deals with. Signing the wrong deal could cost an artist not only a huge amount of potential revenue, but ultimately a fan base as consumers weigh just how much they like an artist. Enough to switch services or add another bill to their monthly expenses only time will tell. All debating aside, as things stand now, fans will either have to shape up or shell out to hear the latest Drizzy album. It would seem that these views have been blocked by a Tidal wave.

Kim and Kayne buy real estate on the moon by SLOANE ZAPATA staff writer
R
egardless of a persons like or dislike for the Kardashian/ Jenner family, it does not change the terrifying fact that they are the most well-known family in America and they have essentially created an empire solely through their good looks and copious amounts of money. This time on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” Kim K and Yeezy (Kim Kardashian and Kanye West) have decided to buy real estate on the moon. “When I first read the article on The Onion’s website I just couldn’t even believe it,” said Jamie McWilliams, junior science major. “It made sense in terms of the Kardashian family, but really, what are they going to do on the moon?” This is a question that most people are asking and Kim Kardashian’s response was that she just wanted a safe environment away from paparazzi that she could take North and Saint. It actually makes sense when one thinks about it. Who is going to fly all the way up to the moon to harass Kim Kardashian? Now as far as space conditioning and buying a spaceship, Kanye West has been looking to design his own spaceship and branding it as the first Yeezy Spaceship. So one will probably be able to buy one by about the year 2040. “I can’t imagine that living on the moon could really be that comfortable,” McWilliams said. “On the other hand, the idea of a Yeezy spaceship is a pretty exciting. I want a Yeezy spaceship.” Living on the moon might not be an ideal place to flourish and raise a family, but when people have more money than they know what to do with they like to keep all their options open. It is safe to say that if there were a zombie outbreak or apocalypse the Kardashian family would be comfy and safe in their giant moon mansion. “I love the Kardashians, and obviously I love Kanye, so I basically support every single thing they do,” said freshman biology major Matt Psencik. “If they want to go and live on the Moon who are we to stop them? If I had that much money I would totally go live on the moon. There’s a really great atmosphere up there.” This is the thought process many people have in regards to the Kardashians. If they want to spend their money on moon travel, why stop them? The most controversial part about all of this is that people
are not understanding how they will even manage to stay alive if they spend too much time on the moon, but the answer to that is simple. Just go watch the movie “The Martian”. That will answer any scientific questions anyone could have about their endeavor on space travel. “Honestly, if anyone can buy real estate on the moon and actually find a way to live there, even has a vacation home, it would be Kim Kardashian,” said Psencik. “It might seem ridiculous but I’ll be really interested to see how they manage it.” In an interview Kim Kardashian made it clear that there was still a lot of things that needed to be squared away, and that it would still be some time before they actually managed to get up there and have some fun. However, she wanted to make it clear that the Kardashian/ West family was the first to own real estate on the moon. That is really the important thing here, they did it first.
