VOLUME 58 FEBRUARY 2023
Fenders & Food Trucks 2023

Dear Member:

With the winter season in full swing, the Club staff remains focused and energized and have created some really great events and happenings for Members.

January brought the eighth annual Fenders & Food Trucks event, a real highlight and one that each year seems to top the last, followed by the inaugural Supper Club which was also a new and exquisite dining experience. We finished the month with wonderful feedback from our special “Mentalist” event.

On the golf course we hosted a successful Isleworth Invitational tournament and on the tennis courts we had the men’s 7.5 team represent Orange County at the Florida state finals. Our amazing 6.5 ladies’ team also won the Florida state finals –an incredible achievement and testament to their dedication to improve and their tenacity on the courts to become State Champions.

As we enter our busier season, we continue to support a healthy waiting list and increased initiation fees. Ongoing enhancements have seen the addition of a new ice bath at the spa, infra-red sauna panels and new fitness equipment, improvements to the games room in Champions and all-new demo clubs now featured in the performance center. We have also hired a new Head Pastry Chef to work alongside Lucy and are excited to welcome Jake Bonzer, who most recently served as Pastry Chef de France at Epcot.

February events include our Member-Guest week on the golf course, Valentine dance, Super Bowl party, Hundred Acre wine studio and our second Supper Club evening. The team are also busy planning a whole year of great events for you to utilize and enjoy the Club, with the Arnold Palmer Invitational event in March featuring our own Dock & Dine party at Shades and Nautique transportation to and from the event.

We are grateful for your support of the staff and, as always, appreciate your candid feedback as we continually look for ways to improve and strengthen what is known as one of the finest Club communities in the world.

Kind Regards,

TENNIS BAG CHECK

Items That Are Essential To Your Game

Tennis players work hard to prepare for their next match or season, but sometimes carrying the right items in their bags could make the difference between winning or losing a match, so let’s do a quick bag check and make sure you have the following items in your bag before your next match:

1. Racquets: Yeah I know, why would you show up to a match without a racquet? Well, I’ve seen players heading to the pro shop and ask for a demo before a match, now sometimes one racquet is not enough, you can break a string, the racquet could slip off your hand and crack, or your grip could get extremely wet, so make sure you have at least two racquets ready.

2. Water and Sunscreen: Even mild dehydration can affect your concentration, or how quickly you fatigue, so make sure you bring enough fluids to the court and please bring some sunscreen, your skin will appreciate it.

3. Hat/ Visor/ Sunglasses: Sunny days are very common in Florida so to protect your skin and your performance on those bright days, get yourself a light weight hat. Sunglasses are not for everyone but they can really make a difference in those mid-day matches when the sun is right above you.

4. Towel: This is great for sweat management, but have you fallen on a clay court? Trust me you would want to have a towel ready to wipe yourself off.

5. Ice Pack: Icing down those sore muscles can help you recover faster and prevent small injuries from becoming larger. Don’t be running around looking for ice and a bag, just get yourself an ice pack and stick it in your bag.

6. Over Grips: Let’s be honest, we all like to have a brand new over grip on our racquets, so why take the risk of playing with a dirty, slippery old over grip? Have a couple extra and make sure you know how to replace it (if you don’t, stay tuned as we will be posting on how to re-grip your racquet).

7. Dampeners: Even the pros hit the ball off center so don’t be surprised when your vibration dampener (those that use it) flies out and disappears. So make sure to add an extra one to your bag

8. Extra Clothes: Have an extra shirt, socks, and shorts (or skirt) ready. You don’t want to go to lunch wearing the same clothes from the courts and if it’s cold make sure you also have a light weight jacket, this will help you protect your muscles. An extra pair of shoes or flip flops could also help you to give your feet a break.

Hope you have most of these in your bag already, if not, visit the pro shop and we will get you ready for your next match.

New! BUILD A BETTER BACK At the Fitness Center

We are pleased to welcome our newest addition in the fitness center with the Hammer Strength back extension station. The main purpose of a back extension is to strengthen the lower back but there are also several other overarching benefits of performing back extensions on a regular basis which include:

• Spinal Stability

• Better Balance & Coordination

• Optimal Spinal Flexibility/Mobility

• Core Strength

• Back Injury Resilience

•Improved Posture

• Potentially Low Back Pain Relief

• Improves Lifts Like Squats and Deadlifts

HOW TO DO A BACK EXTENSION

Step 1:

Begin by positioning yourself in the back-extension station with legs under the leg pads.

Step 2:

Cross arms over chest and lower body at waist as far down to the ground as comfortably possible. Make sure to keep your back naturally arched - do not bend over too far and curve the back.

Step 3:

Begin exercises by raising the upper body at the waist in a smooth controlled manner, until your body forms a straight line. Hold at this position for a brief moment and then slowly return back to the starting position.

As long as you have a healthy lower back, you should have no concern about hurting your back with bodyweight back extensions.

If you have lower back issues, you should consult a doctor before performing low back exercises.
