A message from Islington Council: We can beat coronavirus together I, along with thousands of others in Islington, have found the months since the coronavirus outbreak started extremely challenging. All of us have been affected by this health emergency. We’ve all had to spend time at home, away from family, friends and colleagues, and many have faced additional challenges – such as adapting to home schooling, being furloughed or having to shield. I have never doubted Islington’s capacity to pull together in times of crisis, though, and the borough’s fantastic response to the virus is a reflection on its people. With that in mind, I would like to thank each and every person in Islington that has made sacrifices by staying at home. You have helped contain the virus, and have saved lives.
But we must not lose sight of the fact that coronavirus has not gone away. It’s vital that we all do our bit to keep Islington safe. That means staying at home as much as possible, and staying two metres away from others when you go outside. You should not use public transport unless you really need to. And please, wear a non-medical face covering in enclosed spaces, like public transport or in a shop. Throughout this crisis, the council has taken a safety-first approach. That is why we are in the process of creating people-friendly streets all over the borough – to make it easier to socially distance, and to make walking and cycling easier and safer.
This is essential, not just in terms of responding to coronavirus, but in ensuring that our borough remains green, healthy and friendly for years to come. We are already moving ahead with our plans for Islington’s first people-friendly streets, and plenty more will follow very soon. To find out how you can have your say on ways we can improve streets near you, visit: islington. gov.uk/peoplefriendlystreets We all have done, and are doing, so much to fight this terrible virus. Please, keep looking out for each other and help us all to stay safe. Cllr Richard Watts, Leader of Islington Council
