This catalog, which was prepared by the Society of Turkish American Scholars (STAS) and Advanced Solutions for Education (ASE), provides details including the cost of education for English language schools, community colleges, and universities in states such as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
According to the report prepared by the Institute of International Education with the contributions of the United Nations (UN) and UNESCO, students overwhelmingly choose to study English language and attain their university education in the United State of America. Even students from developed countries like England, Germany, and Canada choose to study in the U.S. as their destination of top choice. Students prefer

Why should I study English language and receive a higher education in the U.S.? ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOLS
UNIVERSITY Universities in the U.S. are 4 years in length and equivalent to most universities in the world. For students who would like to pursue their higher education directly at universities, they should have good scores on SAT and TOEFL examinations. Students pay tuition for their education; however, full and partial scholarships are available for academically successful high school and community college graduates. Students who excel in sports, music, or other fields can receive full or partial scholarships as well.
For those students who want to learn the English language, their educational experience in the U.S. starts with a language school. Depending on the student’s effort, English language education can be completed in 8-12 months. If the English language school is part of a community college or university, students can usually continue their studies in the same community college or university after the completion of the program without taking the TOEFL.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE
There is a great likelihood that successful students can receive scholarships for their Master’s and Doctoral degrees in the U.S. because the vast number of research centers that support successful students. After undergraduate education, students can continue their studies with a Master’s degree or start a doctoral program directly.
More than 40% of American students choose to start their education at community colleges, which generally lasts 2 years. About 100,000 foreign students also select to start their education at community colleges. The majority of students prefer community colleges because they provide an economical alternative to higher education. Community colleges have agreements with local universities in their states to allow students to continue their education at a four-year university. Students from community colleges tend to have high GPAs that enables them to receive scholarships and financial aid from universities. Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eddy Murphy, Walt Disney, and Clint Eastwood are just a few examples of exceptional individuals who studied at community colleges.

ILLINOIS Illinois is the state where the 44th President of The United States of America, Barack Obama, served as senator. The state capital of Illinois is Springfield, and the state has a population of over 12.8 million people. Illinois is home to the third largest city in the United States, Chicago, and includes a shore on the second largest lake in the U.S., Lake Michigan. Some other important cities in Illinois include Naperville, Peoria, Rockford, Schaumburg, Urbana-Champaign, Mt. Prospect, and Evanston. The headquarters of world-wide corporations like United Airlines, Boeing, Motorola, and Caterpillar are located in Illinois.
OHIO The state capital of Ohio is Columbus, and the state has a population of over 11.5 million people. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Akron, Youngstown, Dayton, and Toledo are among the important cities in Ohio. Ohio State University is one of the largest universities in the nation. Ohio is also home to the Cleveland Clinic, the third largest research and medical center, the first motorized flight by the Wright Brothers, and the first mechanical cash register. Ohio, a swing state, carries great influence in the election race for the US presidency.
MICHIGAN The state capital of Michigan is Lansing, and the state has a population of over 9.8 million people. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint and Troy are among the important cities in Michigan. The state shares a coastline with and is named after Lake Michigan. Only one bridge separates Michigan from its border, Canada. Michigan is home to Woodward Street, “Detroit's Main Street� of early automobiles, which stretches 27 miles from the heart of Detroit through the suburbs of Michigan. The headquarters of automobile industries like General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler along with their factories and subsidiary industries are located in Detroit.
WISCONSIN The state capital of Wisconsin is Madison, and the state has a population of over 5.7 million people. Milwaukee, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Kenosha and Lake Geneva are among the important cities in Wisconsin. Wisconsin shares a coastline with Lake Michigan. The headquarters and factory of HarleyDavidson Motorcycles are located in Wisconsin. 9
INDIANA The state capital and the largest city of Indiana is Indianapolis, and the state has a population of over 6.5 million people. Indiana means “Land of the Indians”. The state motto is “Crossroads of America” due to the intersections of major US highways in Indiana. Fort Wayne, Gary, South Bend, Evansville, Bloomington, and Carmel are among the important cities in Indiana. It is also home to the Indianapolis 500, the 3rd largest automobile race in the world. Gary is the birthplace of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
MINNESOTA The state capital of Minnesota is Saint Paul, and the state has a population of over 5.3 million people. Saint Paul, Duluth, Minnetonka, Bloomington, Burnsville, and Rochester are among the important cities in Minnesota. Minnesota is named after a Dakota Indian word meaning “sky water”, which refers to the Minnesota River. Over half of the population resides in the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, an important industry and transportation center. Minnesota has the best health system and is home to the Mayo Clinic that is rated #3 in the U.S. for cancer research and treatment.
MISSOURI The state capital of Missouri is Jefferson City, and the state has a population of over 6 million people. St. Louis, Kansas City, Branson, Springfield, Columbia, and Saint Charles are among the important cities in Missouri. The name Missouri originates from Sioux Indians meaning “the river of the big canoes”. In 1912, the first successful parachute jump from an airplane took place at St. Louis. Also, ice tea gained popularity after its introduction at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
IOWA The state capital of Iowa is Des Moines, and the state has a population of over 3 million people. Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Ames, Davenport, Ankeny, Cedar Falls, and Waterloo are among the important cities in Iowa. Iowa prides itself as an agricultural state and is the largest producer of corn and soybeans in the world. Agricultural related businesses flourish in Iowa which also boasts among the lowest income taxes in the U.S. Iowa is home the world famous tractor company, John Deere, and has widerange of opportunities for internships and job opportunities. 10
NEBRASKA The state capital of Nebraska is Lincoln, and the state has a population of over 1.8 million people. Omaha, Grand Island, Papillion, Kearney, and Norfolk are among the important cities in Nebraska. Nebraska is unique amid the US states because it has a single-chamber legislative body. Nebraska is home to a thriving informational technology sector and Offutt Air Force Base, which holds the headquarters of the U.S. Strategic Command. The emergency system that is used throughout the United States, 911, was founded in Nebraska. Nebraska is the birthplace for Malcolm X, a human rights activist, Gerald R. Ford, a former president, Warren Buffett, one of the world’s richest businessmen, and famous actors like Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, and Nick Nolte.
KANSAS The state capital of Kansas is Topeka, and the state has a population of over 2.8 million people. Wichita, Overland Park, Lenexa, Kansas City, Lawrence, Manhattan, Salina, and Emporia are among the important cities in Kansas. Kansas is a major fashion hub of the Midwest. Kansas is the setting for the classical film, “Wizard of OZ”, and American cultural icon, Superman. Superman’s fictional hometown, Smallville, is located in Kansas. Kansas City, Kansas, the third largest city in Kansas, is adjacent to Kansas City, Missouri.
NORTH DAKOTA The state capital of North Dakota is Bismarck, and the state has a population of 700,000 people. Fargo, Bismarck, Williston, Dickinson, Jamestown, Medora, and Abercrombie are among the important cities in North Dakota. Dakota means “friend” in the Sioux Indian language. Dakota Gasification Company, located in Beulah, is the only synthetic natural gas producer in America.
SOUTH DAKOTA The state capital of South Dakota is Pierre, and the state has a population of 834,000 people. Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Vermillion, and Watertown are among the important cities in South Dakota. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, a giant sculpture of four legendary American presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln), is located in South Dakota. 11

HIGHER EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITIES There are about 3,000 universities in the United States providing higher education. An important advantage of this richness of educational institutions is that students can find more than one program that meet their needs and goals.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Universities in the U.S. are 4 years in length and equivalent to most universities in the world. Students who wish to pursue higher education directly at a University in the U.S. should have the required SAT and TOEFL examination scores. Each university has specific requirements, see individual catalogs for more details. Students pay tuition for their education; however, depending on their level of academic achievement, full and partial scholarships are available for high school and community college graduates. Students who excel in sports, music, or other fields are eligible for full or partial scholarships as well.
Application fees usually range from $25-$50.

GRADUATE EDUCATION (MASTER’S AND DOCTORATE DEGREES)
After undergraduate education, students can continue their studies with a Master’s degree or start a Doctoral degree directly. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Successful students may be eligible for support during their Master's and Doctoral studies. Scholarships are available from research centers who have set aside funds to support international students and from Universities in the form of assistantships. Scholarships and graduate assistantships usually covers full tuition and living costs. To receive a full scholarship, your GPA usually needs to be above 3.00 but this might vary depending on the institution.
Required documents and test scores may vary depending on the school you are applying to. The most commonly required items are listed below: Resume Statement of Purpose
Universities have strict policies on application deadlines which vary depending on the program. You can easily find the application deadlines on the university’s website. Many students lose a semester because they do not pay enough attention to this detail. Based on the time needed to prepare the application, it is advisable for student applicants to start organizing their application materials at least 1 year in advance.
Transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended. Score on TOEFL and GRE (General and/or Subject) 3 Letters of Recommendations Research Experience. Research experience is not usually necessary, but it will give you an advantage in the admission process.
While there are common elements to most applications, some programs might have some special requirements that are different from the others. It is advised that you visit the website of the program to which you wish to apply in order to determine specific requirements.
