Cover Story

With the New Year already here and Chinese New Year almost upon us, everyone’s busy clearing out the boring and old to make way for the shiny and new. Getting rid of all the negative energy that’s built up in the last 12 months and replacing it with something altogether more positive and productive. Or, as the process is nowadays known: Goodbye Candy Crush, hello Candy Crush Dreamworld.

Here in Singapore, though, some people have been taking the process a little too literally, and discarding all kinds of rubbish in a hurry. Two men were recently arrested for hurling a sofa from the fourth floor of a Jurong flat. A 45-year-old man was arrested after throwing a 10kg aircon unit, a dustbin, microwave and a fish tank from his St George’s Lane flat—he was naked at the time and, in fact, threw some clothes down for good measure. And in December, a 15-year-old was arrested near Eunos Crescent for throwing items including bricks, a dumbbell and a water dispenser; while two young brothers were arrested the very same day for throwing a vehicle battery off a high-floor unit at Dover Road.

In defence, law minister Shanmugam said: “If every case has to go to court, every foreigner is entitled to stay here at tax payers’ expense, housed at tax payers’ expense.“ It’s good of the government to sort this out for us—who needs fair trials?

From April, queues are expected to shorten when Changi Airport collaborates with various airlines to roll out the self-boarding gates. The trial run is being carried out in Terminal 2, and will be progressively introduced across all terminals.

TANGS

The buzz: Local heritage department store TANGS Orchard has finally reopened its Home and Market sections, marking the completion of a major threeyear-long facelift. The vibe: For hipster foodies who love to mess around in the kitchen, this is probably their idea of paradise. Bright, airy and just a little unpolished (parts of the ceiling are exposed, while floors are laid with concrete-like tiles and brushed wood), the revamped section is better organized, with brands displayed systematically on soaring shelves. New to the space are three themed kitchens for cooking demos and activities.

The goods: Far too much for most HDB flats to handle. Good on you if you can manage to resist Schlossberg’s ultra-luxurious bed linen or the retro Smeg fridge, but it can be excruciatingly difficult not to put Pip Studio teapots, Zassenhaus coffee grinders and Boska’s cheese tools into your shopping cart. Then there’s the Market, home to F&B establishments like Krispy Kreme, The Mustard Incident and Tiong Bahru Bakery. Incredibly, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Why you’ll be back: Getting all that loot into a car is unlikely (especially if you want to save on delivery charges) so one trip won’t be enough. Even if your shopping budget’s busted for the month, there are always donuts and croissants to come back for.

2.

The most exciting new arrivals of 2014. By the I-S Team

A

s if 2013 wasn’t eventful enough, the year ahead promises to be an exciting one, with all kinds of sporting, culinary and travel highlights, plus the release of more than 30 local films. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Read on to find out more.

Game, Set, Match.

Come October, Singapore will be hosting the prestigious Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Championships, having beaten Mexico’s Monterrey and China’s Tianjin in the hosting bid. The WTA announced a staggering deal worth more than $70 million that will see the annual end-of-season tour championships take place here for five seasons. You’ll get to see world-class tennis players like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in the flesh vying against each other for a prize kitty of US$6.5 million at the new Sports Hub. Oct 17-26. Sports Hub, 15 Stadium Rd., 6344-2660, www.wtachampionships. com. Price TBA.

3. Get Muddy

On the subject of sporting events, rumor has it that cult endurance event Tough Mudder, which has seen over one million participants worldwide to date, may be hitting our shores this year. With 25 incredibly challenging military obstacles—like swimming through a frigid ice bath—designed by British Special Forces, it has been dubbed the toughest event on the planet. However, participants aren’t timed, and are encouraged to regard the event as a personal challenge, rather than a race. Nothing’s been confirmed yet, but aspiring Mudders can preregister at toughmudder.com/singapore-event-preregistration.

Singapore Sports Hub

1.

Sporting Glory

Set to be the city’s latest crown jewel, the new Singapore Sports Hub, located over 35 hectares of Kallang, will be home to the 55,000-capacity National Stadium (hello, world’s largest dome), Indoor Stadium, Sports Museum, Sports Library, Water Sports Centre, a multi-purpose indoor arena, and a sprawling 41,000 sq. m. of retail and waterfront space. Scheduled to open in April, it clinched its first award—the Future Projects Leisure-led Development title—at last year’s prestigious World

Architecture Festival. The Sports Hub’s 2014 calendar is yet to be released, but Philippe Collin Delavaud, CEO of SportsHub Pte Ltd, says: “The Sports Hub will be proudly hosting the Southeast Asian (SEA) Swimming Championships, Asian Netball Championships, AFF Suzuki Cup and the WTA Championships this year. In 2015, it will hold its first international multi-sport competition: the 28th SEA Games.” 15 Stadium Rd., 6344-2660, www.sportshub.com.sg.

There’ll be no rest for running enthusiasts after December’s Standard Chartered Marathon and January’s Run For Your Life (January 11), with various new events happening this year, including the new Monster Ultra 200 (October 31-November 2). See page 19 for more.

Get up close and personal (well, almost...) with your favorite celebrities at Madame Tussauds Singapore, Sentosa’s latest attraction, which is slated to open at Imbiah Lookout in the second half of the year. Besides housing life-sized wax replicas of the internationally famous including Jay Chou and Katy Perry, “Madame Tussauds are already working with a number of local celebrities on sittings, but [are] unable to reveal any as yet,” says Meike Schulze, Divisional Director of operators Merlin Entertainments in Asia. The museum will also feature a special ride—the first outside of its London flagship—that will take visitors through Singapore’s culture and history. www.sentosa.com.sg Madame Tussauds Singapore

5. Prize Pearl

Art fans alert: More great works will soon be on show at Gillman Barracks’ latest addition Pearl Lam Galleries, which opens January 16. Founded by and named after the flamboyant Chinese heiress and Pearl Lam Galleries art icon, the new gallery debuts with the blockbuster show Where Does It All Begin? (January 17-February 28), showcasing abstract works from the Asian and Western art worlds curated by Phillip Dodd, featuring Chinese greats like Zhu Jinshi and Su Xiaobai, and young British artist Peter Peri. “Our Singapore gallery has been strategically chosen to [...] engage in cultural exchange and provide a platform for rising and established talents from the West and East to meet, interact and engage, hence, complementing the critically acclaimed programs of the existing Shanghai and Hong Kong spaces,” says Lam. wild thing

Chef-restaurateur Willin Low has announced plans to reopen Wild Rocket later this year. However, the restaurant won’t be moving anywhere new; it will remain at its Hangout Hotel premises at Mount Emily. Of course, with every big change comes something new, but Low promises that the Wild Rocket ‘DNA’ will essentially remain the same, even with the inevitable revamp, so don’t expect anything other than modern Singaporean fare. “Wild Rocket opened in 2005 and our signature dish was the laksa pesto pasta. When we reopen, there will be a new dish also inspired by laksa and equally boomz (to borrow a word from Ris Low)”. He adds that his brunch and burger outlet Relish will be closing later this year and relocating to a new home soon after.

Sofitel So Singapore

The past year was an eventful one for hotels, what with the opening of Amoy, The Westin, Parkroyal on Pickering and Zhongshan Park’s Ramada and Days Hotel, but 2014 is set to be just as busy. French luxury hotel chain Sofitel So, which collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld to design its emblem, will finally open here in May. “Every corner of the hotel exudes a certain charm that is a mix of playfulness and elegance,” says General Manager Tony Chisholm. “Rooms have a Parisian feel but are accentuated with Singapore touches.

The golden-tiled pool at the rooftop bar HI-SO, the first of its kind in Singapore, as well as flagship restaurant Xperience are also major Tom Ford highlights.” More hotels expected to welcome guests this year include The Patina (at the junction of Stamford Rd. and North Bridge Rd., www.patinahotels.com) and Traders Hotel (www.shangri-la.com/singapore/ traders) that’s part of Orchard Gateway.

Peeping Tom

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands will heat up in April with the arrival of Tom Ford’s first store in Singapore, thanks to the folks at FJ Benjamin. Following the same design concept as the brand’s Madison Avenue flagship, the boutique features a classy, razor-sharp interior and stocks the complete range of menswear, womenswear, accessories, eyewear, fragrances and beauty products. “The brand’s exquisitely constructed and beautifully finished men’s suits have long been highly sought-after. Its womenswear is just as impeccable,” says Ben J Benjamin, Luxury Division General Manager of FJ Benjamin. In addition, opening in February, famous American brand Bath & Body Works (#B2-42) will make its Asia debut at the upscale shopping mall with a 3,000 sq. ft. standalone store.

Hush-hush speakeasies hogged the nightlife scene last year. In 2014, club and bar owners are taking their plush parties up to the skies, right within the CBD. At the top of Singapore Land Tower, the muchdelayed Vogue Club will finally open (though dates remain unconfirmed at press time), the 11,000 sq. ft. space featuring a two-storey cylindrical glass structure, providing unobstructed, 360° panoramic views of the city from 200 meters above ground. Just a stone’s throw away is Ultimate 1-Altitude (opening in February), a sleek, futuristic lounge, replacing the sports bar 282 & City Golf, on the 61st floor of One Raffles Place.

The local film industry is gearing up for a bumper year, reportedly with more than 30 projects set to be released by the end of 2014. One of the highlights is Tony Kern’s anthology of horror shorts Afterimages in August. “The idea for a collection of Singapore horror stories came about after I began hearing various local urban legends repeatedly,” says Kern. “Being from the US, I’ve already had plenty to draw on in the way

of American urban legends, but I became more interested in local legends and beliefs. I started to come up with my own stories based on events that seemed to reoccur here in the region. Pool drowning, suicide jumpers, body parts found in the canals... There is a pattern of reoccurring events that happen here Singapore that don’t happen where I grew up in Ohio. They are almost ‘uniquely Singapore’ as the old tourism campaign promises.”

Michael Di Lonardo The manager of The Farm at San Benito tells us how to make the most of a retreat. What do we need to pack for a health retreat? Comfortable active clothing and walking shoes. What can we do to prepare for the stay, or after returning home? If possible, try to lower consumption of animal protein prior to going on a health retreat. At The Farm we provide a sustainability program with recipes and hints for juicing upon returning home. How can we make the most of our time on a health retreat, to get the maximum benefit? Keep an open mind and be aware of your body and energy flow. Is there any spare time for other activities or sightseeing? Our guests have a rather full schedule, but a nature hike to the world’s smallest active volcano is a popular trip for our guests. Lauren Jade Hill

Singapore Art Week 2014 Special

HOMEGROWN ART HEROES

Local galleries have been pivotal in shaping the local art market. The owners of five homegrown art galleries share with us some of their thoughts on the local art scene and their take on Singapore Art Week 2014.

Stephanie Fong (SF)

FOST Gallery (#01-02 Gillman Barracks, 1 Lock Rd. 66943080, www.fostgallery.com)

Q: How did the gallery come about?

Q: Any tips for potential buyers?

JS: Back in 1995 I had the opportunity to temp at a gallery showcasing European art. It sparked an interest in me and within a few months, I realized this was something I wanted to do.

AY: For those who are new, look at a lot of artwork whenever you have the chance to, in order to sharpen your instincts, knowledge and your eye for art. Buy from a dealer that you trust and talk to them about your interests in art, to also get the knowledge from these experts.

GL: Back in 2007, there was hardly any market for photography work. With a great amount of passion and persistence, 2902 Gallery opened on February 29. It is named “2902” after leap day, reflecting back to time as one key element within photography. VO: We decided to open our gallery 22 years ago, just when the art scene in Singapore began to grow. There were not many galleries then and we felt it was timely for us to establish ourselves to promote our young local artists. AY: The spark probably started as a combination of seeing Claude Monet’s Waterlilies at the Tate Museum, Chu Teh Chun’s abstract paintings at a friend’s house, and the parties at New York’s gallery party scene. I wanted to be a part of something so beautiful, inspring, fun and almost magical. Having lived abroad for half my life, Singapore is a place I care about and could make my home and work some of this programming in with what is already here and what I’ve seen elsewhere. SF: I opened the gallery in 2006 after I returned from my postgraduate studies in art history, and I have not looked back since.

SF: One of the joys of collecting art is to undergo the process of finding artists with potential and watching their practice grow, spending time cultivating good relations with gallerists.

Q: What are your thoughts on the local art scene?

Q: What’s your take on Singapore Art Week?

GL: The scene is definitely growing and developing with new infrastructure, arts clusters, new local and international galleries in Singapore, and matched by more art fairs, a saturated arts calendar and increasing arts purchases.

GL: Singapore Art Week 2014 has grown with wider activity offerings for both the local and visiting audience. Ultimately I hope all these initiatives will translate arts as part of our lifestyle.

JS: It has transformed over the past 10 years. The most significant development is the interest in contemporary art and the growing international awareness. Singapore itself has transformed into a staging ground for regional artists to go international. AY: There is, at the moment, an intelligent group of Singaporean artists who have good support, and very talented and interesting Southeast Asian artists looking at Singapore as a platform, and an increasing amount of international artists as a result, also looking at Singapore as a viable market. So while it is growing slowly, it is growing steadily and that cannot be said for a lot of other markets.

JS: It definitely puts the attention on Singapore as an arts center. It is well organised and this will not only give us an edge over our regional competitors, but also creates a greater international awareness of what’s happening in Southeast Asia. VO: I believe that this year’s edition will be more vibrant than last year’s as we see more galleries participating, and presenting activities and exhibitions. Visits to the many precincts in Singapore are made easier by the AGAS Art-In-Motion bus trails. AY: It is shaping up to be very exciting. Art Stage Singapore is the premier art fair in Singapore and in Southeast Asia. The best galleries in the region, and as a result the best artists, will be showing there. It is a great place to get information about what is interesting in Southeast Asian art. Each year’s Art Week seems to outdo the previous years. SF: It is getting better with each edition and I notice that people are gearing up for it, which means it is establishing itself as an event. With the 2014 edition, we are looking to feature even more activities and synergies than last year.

Swissotel Vertical Marathon

Monster Ultra 200

March 2, 7am, urbanathlon. menshealth.com.sg/2014

May 10, 3pm, www. singaporenighttrail.com.sg

Open to both men and women, this 14km urban obstacle course is widely regarded as one of the most challenging races around. Prove your mettle by taking on nine tough obstacles, including Wire House (a web of bungee cords) and Leap of Faith (a 2m high tower). There’s also a mystery challenge to shake things up.

Navigate the trails of Mandai with only an LED headlight (powered by Energizer, of course) to illuminate the perilous paths ahead. Participants can choose to join the 3km, 6km, 12km or 18km category.

Race dates are yet to be confirmed, but it is slated for November. www. swissotelverticalmarathon.com

Difficulty level: 4/5. This race requires all-round fitness and stamina (participants need to leap, climb, dodge and crawl), with a significant amount of mental endurance.

Difficulty level: Energizer Singapore 3/5. Trail running Night Trail 2014 is tricky enough, with unexpected obstacles to watch out for, so taking on this trail in the dark just makes the challenge harder.

Bored of running across flat terrain? Make your way to the top, literally, by ascending The Swissotel—that’s 1,336 steps over 73 storeys—in the fastest time possible. Difficulty level: 4/5. Lumbering up steps is tough work. Climbing 73 storeys? We feel weak at the knees already.

October 31-November 2, 9pm, www.monsterultra.blogspot.sg

The first-ever edition of this whopping 200km run across the island is open to individuals, as well as teams of two, three and four. Participants have 48 hours to complete the course, which spans just about every far-flung corner of Singapore, from Kranji to Changi. Difficulty level: 5/5. This is by far the toughest race on the running calendar. Imagine running the equivalent of 500 rounds of a standard 400m track—we don’t even want to think about it.

Veteran long distance runner Daniel Chia, from the MacRitchie Runners 25 group (www.mr25.org.sg), shares some tips on how to effectively prepare for a race. How do you train for a race? To prepare for a long distance race, I run five to six times a week, covering 10 to 15km each session. I have a minimum of one speed training per week, where I do at least 10 sets of 400m intervals. I also squeeze in a 10km tempo run twice a week. How can running be made less mundane for the average runner? Listen to music and run with pleasant scenery. Also, try to run in groups to socialize. Any diet tips before race day? Avoid alcohol and fried food when training; instead, eat more fruits and vegetables, and drink more water. Also, try to have a light snack, such as bread, before hard training. Khairul Amri

Gisellablu The buzz: Dubai-based international label Gisellablu opens its first overseas outpost at Raffles City, just two years after its highly successful launch in the Middle East. The vibe: All that glitters is gold. The flashy space, dominated by a glossy-black color scheme, takes its cues from the City of Gold with lustrous gold-beaded curtains

cascading down the walls and ceiling. The goods: Sexy and bold. Helming the label is Australian-born designer Sacha Plumbridge who delivers feminine, effortlessly chic pieces ($50 upwards) that demand attention, like a 20’s inspired heavily-embellished dress, a sheer tiffanyblue blouse and floral-print pants in sunny yellow. Also in store is sister shoe label

Aurora Wild that’s equally as glamorous, including look-at-me animal-print stilettos made with Italian leather ($50 upwards). Why you’ll be back: Few international labels do classy, hot weather-appropriate pieces quite as well as this emerging brand, and the affordable prices just add to its appeal.

#01-13 Raffles City, 252 North Bridge Rd., 6337-7004, www.gisellablu.com. Open daily 10am-10pm. CRYSTAL LEE

The Raw Goods If the wet market just doesn’t cut it for you, find all your juicing essentials at Tangy Tangerines from apples and pineapples ($0.40-$4.50), to hard-tofind fruits like yellow dragonfruit ($5-$9) and custard apples ($3-$18). #02-K48 & 79 PasarBella, 200 Turf Club Rd., 6681-6550, www.tangytangerines.sg.

How to jump on the juicing bandwagon. By Samantha David.

M

aybe it’s just a fad, or maybe it really is the easiest way to shed some pounds. Perhaps it has legit health benefits. Whatever the case, there’s no denying the current popularity of the liquid diet. Here’s how to get involved.

The Delivery Local online juice store Hic’Juice offers organic, cold-pressed juices that come in ‘cleanse packs’ (from $108), depending on how intense you want your detox to be. If you’re just looking for a dietary supplement, opt for the three-flavors-in-one ‘six pack’ ($98). Available online at www.hicjuice.com.sg.

The Book Get the lowdown on juicing with Pat Crocker’s The Juicing Bible ($41), featuring over 300 simple recipes and a guide to how our bodies react to liquid diets. It comes complete with health tips, preparation techniques and more. Available at Kinokuniya, #03-09/10/15 Ngee Ann City, Takashimaya Shopping Centre, 391 Orchard Rd., 6737-5021, www.kinokuniya.com.sg.

Q&A Pooja Vig The owner of The Nutrition Clinic (#04-07 Camden Medical Centre, 1 Orchard Blvd., 6735-2350, www.thenutritionclinic. com.sg) talks about the pros and cons of juicing. Why do you think there’s a trend for juicing? Eating and drinking clean is a reaction to the fear we harbor towards processed food. People are going back to basics as we are starting to realize that the food we consume today is nowhere near as nourishing as it was generations ago.

The Takeaway

The Machine Unlike most juicers, Coway’s Juicepresso ($798) presses and crushes fruit at a low speed so the goodness isn’t lost, plus it’s a lot quieter. A high-powered motor allows for extraction of hard fruits, leafy vegetables and raw nuts. Available at TANGS Orchard, 310 Orchard Rd., 6737-5500, www.tangs.com.sg.

What are the benefits of juicing every day? Juicing gives you a concentrated shot of nutrients. We need seven to nine portions of fruit and vegetables a day, and a large glass of vegetable juice can help reach that target.

Get your juice fix on-the-go at Mission Juice. Choose from classic flavors like honeydew ($2.50) and green options like Chinese kale ($3.50), or go for their special blends like the Breakfast Surprise ($6.50), a mix of orange, apple, pineapple and passionfruit. #01-29, 12 Gopeng St., 61004112, www.missionjuice.sg.

Any health advice/tips for juicing? Start slow—don’t jump into juicing by doing an extreme juice fast. Begin with a single green juice or smoothie daily, and choose ingredients that are lower on the glycemic index. Delle Chan

People often tout the pros of juicing—what are the cons? People with digestive problems frequently embark on radical juicing regimens, but this may actually end up aggravating their condition. Also, juicing can be high in sugar if ingredients are not chosen wisely—for instance, fruits and beets have high sugar contents. Moreover, cruciferous vegetables such as kale and broccoli are best consumed cooked; juicing them may slow down thyroid function.

Tippling Club

The buzz: Chef-owner Ryan Clift says hello to Tanjong Pagar at Tippling Club’s spanking new space. The vibe: If you visited them at Dempsey, you’ll remember seeing a lot of steel and glass. At the new outlet, it’s a complete transformation. Warm, cozy, and inviting sum the vibe up, with lots of wood, pleasing greens, and three separate sections—a bar, an intimate dining space, and another dining area in front of the open kitchen. The food: The tasting menu concept remains the same but new items have been added to both the classic menu (six courses from $160) and the gourmand menu (12 courses from $265), including foie gras

Why it’s worth it: The food is solid but not staid, and the portions are hearty, plus it’s nice and quiet. Consider this one of Orchard Road’s better business lunch options. #02-01 Scotts Square, 6 Scotts Rd., 66362951, www.arossa.com.sg. CLARA LIM

Tippling Club’s very own wine and Champagne labels, produced by makers like Casa Freschi, are also on offer. Why you’ll be back: Clift’s molecular gastronomy remains a sight to behold, plus the menu changes regularly. Also, look out for the new customizable lunch tasting menu, to be launched very soon.

SCENESTEALER Phoenix The Grammy-award winning French indie rock band are set to hit the stage next week at The Star Performing Arts Centre. Vocalist Thomas Mars talks to us about crowd-surfing and time travel. You once said "The idea is to fight against what people expect”. How’s that ideology coming along? It's true that it's exciting for us to go against something, to resist, but it's never a starting point to anything creative. It's pretty much us that we try to impress, and then if we create something beautiful, somebody else will appreciate it in a different way.

24   I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, January 10, 2014

Do you guys ever get into arguments? No. We spent a whole year shouting at each other when we were 14. I think we got it out of our systems then. What are the benefits of being in a band? Getting to perform in some incredible places and meeting people you wouldn't meet if you were visiting as a tourist. You get a real experience of what the world is. It's very overwhelming and comforting at the same time.

We know the band grew up generally hating to jam. How were your songs created? We create music in a non-traditional jam sort of way. We are surrounded by electronic instruments more than conventional jam instruments.

If you guys had super powers, what would they be? It's really hard to answer this question without sounding corny like a boy-band... time travelling would be a good one, if considered a super power. Life is…? That's a big question. I don't have big answers. Phoenix – Live in Singapore is on Jan 15, 8pm. The Star Performing Arts Centre, 1 Vista Exchange Green, 6348-5555. $68-148 from Sistic. CSI, Anyone?

Pretty Fly

Here’s a little-known fact about the Science Centre Singapore. They organize forensic science modules for people who’re interested in channeling their inner crime scene investigator. Whether that turns out to be a true calling or not, there’s no denying the three modules—DNA Detectives, DNA in Forensic Science and Finding the Lost Princess—are lots of fun, and informative to boot. The programs are conducted upon request, but drop by any time to visit their Titans of the Past dinosaur exhibition (through Feb 23) and the permanent Defending Science showcase of defense history and technology.

Aviation flight simulator Flight Experience Singapore (from $175/30 minutes) allows novices and professionals alike to learn the ropes and pilot a Boeing 737NG with the aid of an instructor. Like similar facilities around the world, here they use cutting-edge technology to make the experience truly immersive and just as exciting as the real thing. After “check-in”, you meet your First Officer—a real pilot who’s your instructor for the session— and undergo a briefing and flight plan. Then, get strapped into the captain’s seat, take off and make sure you’re on top of everything that’s happening while airborne, before bringing the aircraft down for a safe landing at the airport of your choice. It’s about as close as it gets to the real thing.

One of Singapore’s most interesting artists, 39-year-old Ang SongMing experiments with painting and videos inspired by pop music and musicology. His upcoming show Logical Progressions for Singapore Art Week is a smart two-channel video of the artist performing on a harpsichord to the tune of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. He talks to us about art, music and mimicry. The last time I was inspired I… made another artwork. My life is quite boring in that way. Most of my time is spent developing ideas and executing them, turning them into art. Music is… something I love a lot. It taught me how to listen. Mimicry is… quite underrated, I think. It has an important function in evolution. The most perplexing thing about the universe is… probably how it came about. There’s a fine line between… enough and too much. Art is… probably something we shouldn't take too seriously. Logical Progressions is on through Mar 2. FOST Gallery, #01-02 Gillman Barracks, 1 Lock Rd., 6694-3080, www.fostgallery.com. Free. House Call It wasn’t long ago that we were downing Champagne at the launch of glam bar The Mansion ( #02-10/15 Pacific Plaza, 9 Scotts Rd., 6734-2276), so imagine our surprise when it was recently turned into PVT Cocktail and Champagne Bar (PVT is short for “Provocateur”). It’s basically the same bar, but under a different guise, with its period decor intact. It’s now managed by the folks behind Mink, with boutique liquors its main focus. If the parties at Mink are anything to go by, expect some pretty wild ones to take place. Log on to www.facebook.com/pages/PVT-Cocktail-Champagne-Bar for updates.

Ring My Bell On the subject of liquors, famed US bartender Jeff Bell from cool East Village joint PDT (Please Don’t Tell) will be heading to town sometime next month (rumoured to be February 13 or 14) for a guest bartending night. Expect Bell to whip up some mean cocktails at a location to be confirmed.

Trick or Treat

Art is big in the city right now with Singapore Art Week taking place on January 13-19. Even more can be expected when the Trickeye Museum (www.trickeye.com), the first in Southeast Asia, opens at Resorts World Sentosa later this year, which will feature fun, interactive 3D artworks. While not quite as high brow as regular museum pieces, they’re a fun and engaging way to view art. Stay tuned for updates.

LAST WORD freewill astrology

Week of January 10 © 2013 Rob Brezsny

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Would you be interested in a motto that will help set the tone for you in 2014? I’ve got a suggestion that’s in alignment with the astrological omens. It’s from a poem by Margaret Atwood. Try saying this and see if it works for you: “Last year I abstained / this year I devour / without guilt / which is also an art.” If you choose to make this affirmation your own, be sure you don’t forget about the fact that devouring without guilt is an art—a skill that requires craft and sensitivity. You can’t afford to get blindly instinctual and greedy in 2014; you shouldn’t compulsively overcompensate for 2013’s deprivations. Be cagey and discerning as you satisfy your voracious hunger. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The coming months will be a good time to meditate on the concepts of happy accidents and benevolent trouble. Go ahead and throw constructive mischief into the mix, too, and maybe even a dose of graceful chaos. Are you game for playing around with so much paradox? Are you willing to entertain the possibility that fate has generous plans for you that are too unexpected to anticipate? There’s only one requirement that you have to meet in order to receive your odd gifts in the spirit in which they’ll be offered: You’ve got to be open-minded, eager to learn, and flexible. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): I think we humans need some new emotions. It’s true that old standards like sadness, anger, jealousy, and fear are as popular as ever. But I would personally love to be able to choose from a greater variety, especially if at least 51 percent of the new crop of emotions were positive or inspiring. Now it so happens that in 2014 you Pisceans will be primed to be pioneers. Your emotional intelligence should be operating at peak levels. Your imagination will be even more fertile than usual. So how about it? Are you ready to generate revolutionary innovations in the art of feeling unique and interesting feelings? To get started, consider these: 1. amused reverence; 2. poignant excitement; 3. tricky sincerity; 4. boisterous empathy. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Deep bronzes and smoky cinnamons and dark chocolates will be your lucky colors in 2014. Mellow mahoganies and resonant russets will work well for you, too. They will all be part of life’s conspiracy to get you to slow down, deepen your perspective, and slip into the sweetest groove ever. In this spirit, I urge you to nestle and cuddle and caress more than usual in the coming months. If you aren’t totally clear on where home is, either in the external world or inside your heart, devote yourself to finding it. Hone your emotional intelligence. Explore your roots. On a regular basis, remember your reasons for loving life. Stay in close touch with the sources that feed your wild soul. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): For years, French painter Édouard Manet and French poet Stéphane Mallarmé hung out with each other every day. Mallarmé referred to their relationship as “the most complete friendship.” They influenced each other to become better artists and human beings. I’m guessing that in the coming months, Taurus, you’ll thrive on that kind of stimulating companionship. Having such regular contact with a like-minded ally might even be an important factor in ripening your intelligence. At the very least, I predict that soulful friendship will be a crucial theme in 2014. You will attract blessings and generate luck for yourself by deepening your ability to cultivate synergistic bonds. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): St. Peter’s Basilica is a very old church in Vatican City. It contains a life-size bronze statue of St. Peter that is at least 700 years old. Over the centuries, countless visitors have paid their respects by kissing and touching the feet of the idol. The metal composing the right foot has been so thoroughly worn down by these gestures that the individual toes have disappeared, leaving a smooth surface. You will have a similar kind of power in 2014, Gemini. Little by little, with your steady affection and relentless devotion, you can transform what’s rigid and hard. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): Big rivers don’t travel in straight lines. Their paths are curvy and complicated, with periodic turns and

30   I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2014

bends. In some places they flow faster and in others they’re slower. Their depth and width may vary along the way, too. Your own destiny is like one of those big rivers, Cancerian. In some years, it meanders for long stretches, slowing down as it wanders along a crooked course. It may even get shallower and narrower for a while. But I expect that in 2014, you will be moving more rapidly than usual. You will be traveling a more direct route, and you will be both wide and deep. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): “In games there are rules,” writes science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson, “but in life the rules keep changing.” This is always true, of course, but I think it will be an especially poignant truth for you between now and your next birthday. During the coming months, you may sometimes feel as if every last law and formula and corollary is mutating. In some cases, the new rules coming into play will be so different from the old rules you’ve been used to, they may at first be hard to figure out. But now here’s the happy ending: It may take a while, but you will eventually see that these new rules have an unexpected logic and beauty that will serve your future well. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): I predict that you will commit no major acts of self-sabotage in 2014. Congrats! I also foresee that you will be exceptionally careful not to hurt or damage yourself. Hooray! More good news: You won’t be as critical of yourself as you have sometimes been in the past. The judgmental little voice in the back of your head won’t be nearly as active. Yay! Even your negative emotions will diminish in frequency and intensity. Hallelujah! Whoopee! Abracadabra! LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): The citizens of Iceland love literature, but many are not content to simply read. One out of every ten Icelanders writes and publishes a book at some time in his or her life. I know it’s unrealistic, but I would love to see at least one in ten of all my Libra readers do the same in 2014. I think you’re ready to make a big statement—to express yourself in a more complete and dramatic way than ever before. If you’re not ready to write a book, I hope you will attempt an equivalent accomplishment. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): I’m hoping you will find a new teacher or two in 2014, maybe even a mentor. Not a guru who tells you what to do. Not an exploitative “expert” who claims to know what’s right for you or a charismatic narcissist who collects adoration. What I wish for you, Scorpio, is that you will connect with wise and humble sources of inspiration... with life-long learners who listen well and stimulate you to ask good questions... with curious guides who open your eyes to resources you don’t realize you need. In the coming months, you are primed to launch a quest that will keep you busy and excited for years; I’d love to see you get excellent help in framing that quest. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): In 2014, it’s possible you will be given a cabbage farm or a petting zoo or some bequest that’s not exactly in close alignment with your life’s purpose. But it’s more likely that the legacies and dispensations you receive will be quite useful. The general trend is that allies will make available to you a steady flow of useful things. Your ability to attract what you need will be high. In the coming months, I may even have good reason to name you an honorary Scorpio. You might match those Great Manipulators’ proficiency at extracting the essence of what you want from every situation.

No one else can do that for them, especially not the government. I believe that if you seek to become excellent, the pay will sort itself out.
