1. Save money. Uber is now banned in Spain, India and Thailand. We’re going to take the opportunity to no longer spend 70% of our monthly paycheck on 1am taxis home from Tanjong Pagar. That’s right: we’re going to take the bus! 2. Go green. Next year, we’re going to sign up for organic vegetable delivery (flown in from Europe) and buy our nut butters from only local food producers (where do they get their raw materials again?). And of course, we’re going to spend more time connecting with nature (inside Gardens by the Bay’s air-conditioned Flower Dome). Hey, we’re not called the Garden City for nothing. 3. Get out of our comfort zones. We’re starting to grow tired of plying the likes of Ann Siang Hill, Robertson Quay and Arab Street. In 2015, we’re going to break free of our tried and tested habits and venture out to Jurong. We hear it’s getting new malls, new gardens, new hotels— third-wave coffee houses and bespoke cocktail bars can’t be too far behind, right?

With 2014 ending and SG50 just around the corner, here are our resolutions for 2015:

entertainment & lifestyle

4. Get laid more. Just as we were getting used to our parents’ nagging us about grandchildren, the babymaking campaign for SG50 rolled around. We can’t help feeling the pressure to procreate and further national morale. Tinder and OKCupid, here we come. 5. Let it go. Singapore was all over world rankings this year: best place to visit (according to Lonely Planet), healthiest city (according to the BBC), most expensive city (who could forget). We can’t help but wonder what it’s like to be number two, let alone ten. Maybe we should try something new: just chill out and let ourselves go. 6. Quit our jobs. When former second secretary for the opposition Nicole Seah quit politics a few months ago, we imagined it was for some ideological reason. Turns out she’s just pursuing her dreams of being a movie star. The cute 20-something is going to be the female lead in upcoming SG50 film 1965. Wait till we tell our boss we’re quitting our jobs to join the latest edgy experimental theater start-up. What are yours?

Hot: Happy foreign labor Not: “Underhappy” locals

A survey by the Ministry of Manpower said that the nine out of ten foreign workers in Singapore were happy with their lives here. In a separate study by the Singapore Human Resources Institute, locals were found to be “underhappy” with their working lives. The irony!

With the weaker ringgit, more Singaporeans are going to Johor Bahru to shop and dine (not to mention fill up on cheap gas). Unfortunately, cheap prices were not such a great idea for Adidas. They had to terminate a 40% off sale recently due to the overwhelming response.

Singapore’s love affair with the cupcake is coming to a (bitter)sweet end. Get ready for something savory with bagel places like Two Guy Bagel House and newcomer Sacha & Sons. It’s time for the cream cheese, cured salmon and pastrami to shine.

How did three guys launch a shopping app? We have tons of stuff lying around at home collecting dust and existing sites were too troublesome to sell it on. There wasn’t much media coverage, but the Singapore High Court gave 49 yearold convicted drug carrier Mohd Jeefrey bin Jamil the death penalty after he was caught with 45 grams of diamorphine in 2012. He had failed to provide enough assistance and information to the police to disrupt the drug trafficking operation (which would have allowed him to escape the gallows). He is the second drug prisoner to be sentenced to death this year, after Malaysian Devendran Supramaniam, who was also also unable to provide enough intelligence to the authorities.

Bedok Interchange has just been revamped into a massive new integrated public transport hub that links the MRT station, bus interchange and Bedok Mall, complete with all-important air-conditioning. First-day hiccups aside, east-siders can now enjoy a more comfy commute. The Ministry of Transport has also promised more improvements in the future, so hopefully we won’t have to save for that astronomically priced COE or fight for cabs all the time.

A new bakery to obsess over Asanoya Bakery (Wilby Central, 15 Queen St., 6703-8703, www.asanoya.asia) is our latest favorite spot for delicious carbs. We’ll soon get our very own Museum of Independent Music (1B Aliwal St., www. facebook.com/moimsg) dedicated to documenting the history of Singapore’s indie music scene. According to founders Anvea Chieu and Tarmizee Taksen, visitors can pore over memorabilia, art, artifacts, documentaries, short films and an audio archive. The museum will only be ready in late January, but right now you can view the exhibition Red Herrings (through Dec 24), a collection of art by local musicians.

Slated to coincide with mega art fair Art Stage (Jan 22-25 2015, www. artstagesingapore.com), MAD Museum of Art and Design will put up a steamy-sounding, Asian erotica-focused fringe show called Mad Love (Jan 21-Apr 26 2015), with greats like Japanese street artist Madsaki and Hong Kong director-photographer Wing Shya, along with noteworthy regional artists and designers. Plus, it’s cocurated by.former I-S editor and art writer Terry Ong, so it’s gotta be good.

Former Smiths guitarist and songwriter Johnny Marr will grace us mortals on Feb 9 2015, 8pm at the NUS University Cultural Centre Hall. While we’re sure his solo stuff is all very well and good, most of us know and love him as Morrissey’s better half, them having cowritten works of art like This Charming Man and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. He’s also played guitar for Talking Heads, Modest Mouse and with New Order’s Bernard Sumner. Tickets are $88-148 from Sistic.

cover story

YEAR I N R E V I E W From defamation lawsuits and banned films to canceled concerts and hot new openings, we chart the highs and lows of the year that was. By I-S Editorial

J anuary

February

• British expat Anton Casey called subway riders “poor people” and an endless (and vaguely entertaining) sh**storm ensued.

Aliwal Urban Art Festival

• Singapore Art Week (Jan 13-19) was pretty exciting, with art fair behemoth Art Stage and exhibitions at practically every gallery. Standouts included Dorothy Vogel’s appearance at the Herb & Dorothy docuscreening, a party at Gillman Barracks and the Sideshow-curated Aliwal Urban Art Festival.

MARCH

• On the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom report, Singapore ranked 150 out of 180, just ahead of Mexico and The Democratic Republic of Congo.

• The alcohol tax hike was announced, and outraged Singaporeans initially threatened to do all their drinking in neighboring countries. In retrospect, it seems higher prices have yet to cool our thirst for boutique Champagnes and artisanal rums.

• Whatsapp was bought out by Facebook, resulting in a paranoid (but shortlived) migration over to alternatives like Line.

JUNE • The Philippine Independence Day celebration was canned, thanks in part to xenophobic Facebook trolls. • Political critic and writer Catherine Lim struck again with an open letter to PM Lee, helpfully pointing out that the government has lost the people’s trust. Much hoo-ha ensued, keeping columnists busy for a few days.

I‑S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, december 19, 2014

• After a great event in February, Hostess Club Weekender canceled its Singapore leg, and our hopes of prostrating before Cat Power in the flesh were dashed.

December’s AFF Suzuki Cup, where Singapore didn’t even make it out of their group.

• Seemingly in response to too-fancy gourmet markets (read: stalls selling air-flown cheeses), the first legit farmers market (with actual local produce and eggs!) took place.

• Zouk got raided by police, and clubbers were left stranded indoors for up to three hours while cops carried out searches. The set by German trance duo Cosmic Gate was also canceled. • The Singapore Sports Hub opened and has been busy ever since with huge sporting events like the WTA Finals (where Serena clobbered Simona Halep in October) and

“It can’t be that Singapore’s already 50 years old and the dishes that still define us are chicken rice and chili crab.” —Jeremy Nguee, chef, Preparazzi

“Singapore is so clean that there are no jokes written in the toilets.” —Victor Cui, CEO, ONE Fighting Championship

• Singaporeans got increasingly bleary-eyed as the World Cup wore on with an endless string of 3am matches. Germany won. Productivity suffered.

• Once anti-establishment bad boys, The Rolling Stones came to Singapore and played at the very established Marina Bay Sands’ Ballroom. Not the most rock n’ roll venue, but hey, they’re getting (very) old.

• About 28,000 LGBT folks and their allies attended the steadily growing Pink Dot event, despite concerns that the anti-gay Wear White movement would cause friction. It didn’t, and Pink Dot continued to be a shockingly wholesome, family picnic with a scant drag queen or two. We hope for something more raucous and feather-filled next time.

• Kranji Countryside Farmers’ Market (www.facebook.com/ farmersmarketsg) saw a huge turnout of ecstatic farm-totable enthusiasts. Singapore Sports Hub

“Every HDB estate can be converted into a kampong garden. I can’t stand community gardens that start with building a fence around it. What’s community about it?” —Ivy Singh-Lim, owner, Bollywood Veggies

“You can’t have four authentic cooks in one kitchen with each one having their version of authentic. There’s no school that teaches authenticity.” —Violet Oon, chef and owner of Violet Oon’s Kitchen

“In Singapore, people become fixated with checkbox ticking, instead of looking at outcomes. The job is only done when you get the outcome that you want.” —David Lim, mountaineer and motivational speaker “The best artist is the one who turns up on time, who knows how to write an invoice and send a proposal. They may not be the best talent.” —Kamini Ramachandran, storyteller and arts educator

APRIL • The Singapore edition of Songkran was announced (to much headscratching), and then promptly canceled due to the unseasonal dry spell. Sadly, water conservation efforts thwarted our attempt to randomly annex Thai culture.

• Singapore Design Week (what is it with Singapore and themed weeks?) saw a great turnout for hipster events involving fixies and design studios. Plus, the National Design Centre (111 Middle Rd., 6333-3737, www.designsingapore.org) opened, and has since played host to pop-ups galore.

• Orchard Gateway (277 Orchard Rd., 6513-4633, www.orchardgateway. sg) opened in April, with a slew of local stores like Actually, Whole9Yards and Sects shop.

• Hip hop legends Wu-Tang Clan and Jurassic 5 both played at Zouk within two nights of one another. • Headed by newly-installed director Susie Lingham, Singapore Art Museum kicked off the year’s slew of big art shows with Unearthed, a high-concept, multi-disciplinary artistic meditation on earth sciences.

MAY • Alternative clubs Home Club and Sultan Jazz Club closed within weeks of each other, causing a small ruckus among people who care about music. They’ve since been replaced with Canvas (20 Upper Circular Rd., 6538-2928, canvasvenue.sg) and SingJazz Club (101 Jalan Sultan, 8481-3034, www.facebook.com/singjazzclub). • Local craft brewery Jungle Beer closed abruptly, with head brewer Adi Challa nowhere to be found. Sad! • Potato Head Folk (36 Keong Saik Rd., 6327-1939, www.pttheadfolk.com) opened on Keong Saik to ridiculous amounts of hype. The same, sadly, couldn’t be said for the return of local gem Wild Rocket later in the year.

National Design Centre

OrchardGateway Potato Head Folk

AUGUST

JULY

• Hot on the heels of Pink Dot, The National Library Board banned three children’s books depicting gay families, including And Tango Makes Three, causing much debate between those applauding the NLB protecting traditional attitudes and those condemning the board for kowtowing to cry-baby homophobes.

O C TOBER

September

• Mos Def was a no-show at Summerdaze music festival on Sentosa. The crowd waited till nearly midnight when it was finally announced that the man wasn’t coming at all. We knew it was too good to be true—tickets were only $30 a pop.

• The Transboundary Haze Act did nothing to stop the haze in its tracks, going as high as 113 on the PSI (the “unhealthy” range begins at 101) in mid-September. F1 was slightly marred by a blanket of haze, but JLo’s lofty assets lifted our spirits.

Mos Def

• After a monster social media campaign and months of will-they-or-won’t-they, Zouk (17 Jiak Kim St., www.zoukclub.com.sg) announced that it had gotten a lease extension and would not close at the end of the year. Alas, other clubs did: The Vault and, come March 2015, The Butter Factory.

To Singapore with Love

• Tan Pin Pin’s documentary, To Singapore with Love, was banned in Singapore for allegedly misrepresenting government actions against dissidents in the 1960s.

DECEMBER

NOVEMBER • The never-ending defamation saga between PM Lee and Roy Ngerng ended with the judge finding the blogger guilty.

Kaiser Chiefs

• Kaiser Chiefs ditched us as Hostess Club Weekender was canceled again, this time due to band visa issues in Tokyo. • It was a good month for bookworms: the much-loved Library@Orchard (#03-12 and #04-11 Orchard Gateway, 277 Orchard Rd., www.nlb.gov.sg) returned, and so did Kinokuniya’s flagship in its new (albeit smaller) space.

• Our 19th Readers’ Choice Awards were a rollicking success, concluding well after midnight with dozens of shoeless revelers ripping up the dance floor at Altimate (61/F One Raffles Place, 1 Rafflles Place, 6438-0410, www.1-altitude.com).

• The Living Planet Report by WWF found that Singapore has the seventh largest carbon footprint in the world. Curiously, though, we topped Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2015 list soon after.

Shisha

• The Ministry of Health announced a ban on shisha smoking. Here’s to living longer.

• Everyone was late to all their morning appointments as the In-n-Out burger pop-up took place for one morning, with three-hour queues.

Singapore International Film Festival

• Singapore International Film Festival (www.sgiff.com) returned after a two-year hiatus, with local cinema Ken Kwek’s Unlucky Plaza as the opening film and a visit from John Woo and Juliette Binoche.

There’s plenty more where that came from. For more events, fashion news and lots more dining deals, download the I-S Magazine iPad app: www.is-magazine.com/app FRIDAY, december 19, 2014 I‑S MAGAZINE

We love murses as much as the next metrosexual, and Thielemann’s new line of men’s briefcases really hit the spot with their classic designs and leatherwork. All Thielemann bags are made of full grain leather, which makes them hardy and resistant to tear and moisture. They’re also all small batch, so you won’t spot a guy on the MRT sporting the same bag (the horror!). The vibe: Situated in an industrial park, the small front door belies the vinyl treasure trove that lies within. Inside they clearly mean business: no unnecessary bells or whistles, just two long walls neatly stacked with LPs loosely categorized by genre, divided by a central island containing yet more vinyl. Some more collectable LPs are displayed on the wall. There are a bunch of record players stacked on shelves, too. The goods: Over 30,000 second-hand LPs and 7”s covering all genres and tastes. You’ll find jazz and blues in the middle, while the right hand side of the store is where you rummage hard for everything else from ‘80s pop to ‘70s prog rock and more. Owner Richard Wan, says prices start from around $15 but you might have to pay a fair bit more if you find something particularly collectible. Why you’ll come back: The sheer scale of this place means you’d take days to go through everything properly. DRINK Cachaça Crazy

With the caipirinha becoming the hot cocktail of choice lately, it’s funny how few choices there were when it came to buying its alcoholic base, cachaça. Maracatu Cachaça (www.drinkmaracatu.com), a premium smallbatch distillery using copper pot stills, has just launched in Singapore. This homegrown brand has partnered with a Brazilian distillery in Minas Gerais to create a singledistilled sugarcane-based spirit. Get it at $80 from their site or at Ah Sam Cold Drink Stall, Jekyll & Hyde and The Cufflink Club.

There’s an increasing number of multi-concept spaces popping up with The Refinery (115 King George’s Ave., 6293-0461, www.therefinery.sg) being one of the latest. The yakitori joint-cum-cocktail bar-cum-artisan workshop is housed in a three-story building off Jalan Besar (i.e. hipster central). It’s the folks behind The General Company and designers Architology, so expect fuss-free Japanese skewers and small plates, crowd-pleasing classic cocktails like mojitos and a co-working space for local artisans.

hot pot Soup King

The New Willy Wonka

Ardent followers of award-winning dessert chef Janice Wong can look forward to her new shop in ION Orchard. Slated to open Dec 22, JANICE WONG (1/F ION Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn) will feature edible art, bonbons and cakes. There are also kooky items like marshmallow paintings ($18), chocolate bonbons ($2.50), cakes ($10) and fruit rolls ($9.80). The best part is you can create your own chocolate art with 38 different colors of chocolate paint ($15) in flavors like passionfruit, green mango and smoked chocolate.

Double Dishes

The Les Amis Group are at it again with two more openings. Shaw Centre tapas joint La Taperia (#02-10/11 Shaw Centre, 1 Scotts Rd., 6737-8336, www. lataperia.com.sg) takes over from Spanish restaurant, Terry’s. Dinner Delivery

Christmas doesn’t have to be a laborious affair if you order in. Cocotte (1/F Wanderlust, 2 Dickson Rd., 6298-1188, www.restaurantcocotte.com) has a special hamper ($249) that feeds four and is filled with treats like lobster and walnut aioli salad; and a whole roast chicken. If you’re after something less conventional, Skinny Pizza (#01-03 100AM, 100 Tras St., 6444-2136, www.skinnypizza.com. sg) has a Christmas apple crumble pizza ($10/9-inch, $12/11-inch) with sautéed apples, cinnamon spiced apple-cranberry compote, port-soaked sour cherries, red currants and hazelnut crunch.

Celeb Spotting

Marina Bay Sands isn’t the only place that can pull in the celeb chef crowd. Resorts World Sentosa (8 Sentosa Gateway) has two new chefs: Japan’s Hal Yamashita who will open modern Japanese restaurant Syun, while Thailand’s Ian Kittichai will helm the kitchen of spa cuisine restaurant, Tangerine at ESPA.

Lunch deal Etna The deal: Duxton’s Italian eatery offers a classic three-course menu with a choice of two starters, three main courses and a dessert of the day. Start off with veal carpaccio, red wine pears, rucola salad and parmigiano cheese, but if you don’t like raw, there’s always the pumpkin and leek soup. This place does fish well, so the grilled dory fillet with Sicilian peperonata is a perfect balance of crisp and tangy. Desserts are constantly rotating but if the pistachio tiramisu is available, you know what to order. Why it’s worth it: For $27.80, it’s one of the cheaper Italian meals you’ll find around town. Plus, they offer a slight fine dining edge without the stuffiness of uppity waiters and a pretentious atmosphere. It’s all about homey Italian food here. Lunch available Mon-Sun noon-2:30pm. 50 Duxton Rd., 6220-5513, www.etnaitalianrestaurant.com LETITIA TANDEAN

The vibe: Nice and airy but pretty similar to most modern steakhouses with lots of dark wood tables and grey suede chairs. Still, the floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden murals of cow skulls and minimalist approach to the furniture give it a more laidback vibe. The food: They’ve got familiar cuts like Kobe rib eye ($340 for 250g) and Australian Jacks Creek Wagyu rib eye ($182 for 1kg), but it’s the Canadian Angus tenderloin ($78 for 250g) and New Zealand Wakanui aged sirloin ($88 for 300g) that intrigues us. Each steak comes with a nice sear from the PIRA

charcoal grill and is served with one sauce, from a choice of seven, which includes: salsa verde, chimichurri, bordelaise with bone marrow and béarnaise (additional sauces at $4). Classic sides include creamy sweet corn with corn kernels ($16), lemon rosti ($15) and maple Brussels sprouts with pancetta and nuts ($16). The drinks: Lots of wines. There are by-theglass options (from $16) and rarer boutique bottles like the 2012 Pouilly-Fume from La Demoiselle de Bourgeois ($208) and a 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon from Meyer Vineyard ($228). They’ve also got cocktails like the Sear Signature made with gin, campari and lime ($17). Why you’ll be back: The view, the range of meat and the decent price tags.

Your pass comes with 10 credits, which you can use on 137 different routes. Obviously, there’s a bunch of fine print: certain routes can swallow as many as eight credits in one go. But it’s still a neat deal for short hops. Bonus: you won’t have to deal with exchange rates when booking flights.

last word

Theresa Goh After her recent medals in the Asian Para Games, Singaporean para-swimmer Theresa Goh, 27, chatted with Eimear Elkington about her training schedule, dealing with the pressure of competition and what it’s really like to have a disability in Singapore.

I’ve been to lots of competitions, so I know what to expect. The recent Asian Para Games were my second so I knew who was going to be there. It was just a matter of preparing myself mentally for the training and the competition. It would be pretty eye-opening for someone who’s never been to the Games before. You will see people with really different disabilities—for example, someone who doesn’t have any arms and who uses their feet to eat. I like the atmosphere of any big games village. You feel like everyone is there for a reason. Everyone has their own goal to achieve, and you get to meet a lot of new people. I still get nervous; I sometimes place too much pressure on a certain event, but I’ve had years getting used to the pressure of competing. I was about a seven on the stressed-out scale for the Asian Para Games. And the highest I’ve ever been, at the Paralympics, was close to a 10. It’s all about managing the pressure, though, bringing my stress levels down. It takes a few years to work out how to do that. Competing is so mental. You can only do so much in terms of physical training; people miss out the mental aspects—being able to calm yourself down, or to raise your excitement levels if you’re not feeling energetic enough.

My training schedule varies, but currently I’m training every day except weekends. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we do gym training in the mornings, and then Tuesdays to Fridays we have swimming in the afternoons for about two hours. But this is off-peak; it’s even more intense in peak season, in the lead up to competitions we do swimming twice a day.

“There are times when I feel like I don’t want to do it anymore.”

I was at my peak physically from 2000-2008. I had a lot of highs: I was breaking world records for 50m and 200m breaststroke. I was training around 13 times a week, plus gym sessions. I was consistently able to reach that high level and it showed in the results.

I was pretty happy most of the time as a child. I was surrounded by a lot of positive energy and encouragement and generally didn’t feel like I had a disability. I am smiling and laughing in photos, and I think that shows what my childhood was like.

When I got to school I realized I was a little bit different but I was never bullied. Luckily, my school mates and teachers were all really nice and always made me feel like I fitted in. I feel strongly about women’s rights and LGBT related issues. When I look at my news feed, these are the things that are missing. I feel like I need to put some information out there so people are more aware of the issues.

There were a lot of sacrifices. I was tired all the time but I couldn’t really think about being tired. It was just training, training, training. Still it paid off when I saw the results.

Sometimes people just need to read one thing to start changing their mindset.

I’ve been swimming for 15 years, so there are times when I feel like I don’t want to do it anymore.

More awareness and more accessibility would help people with disabilities in Singapore. The physical environment is really important.

It was a low point after the Beijing Paralympics, I’d been training for four years for that moment. I was pretty sure I would get a medal and I missed out by 0.2 seconds. It was really disappointing because that wasn’t my best time.

Being in a wheelchair, whenever I go out I need to use Google Maps to see for myself where the ramps are or call the venue and ask if it’s wheelchair accessible. These are little things I’ve gotten used to over the years, but for equality you want to make things accessible for everybody.

Maybe, I wanted it too much, I just got to the point that I was hitting a wall. I think about that when I’m training, because I want to do better next time.
