A Message from
Tom King Dear State Museum & Historic Sites Supporter:
This summer, I stood on the bridge that spans the third floor of the Indiana State Museum, and I was struck by how many different things I could see from that single vantage point. From The Lincolns: Five Generations of an American Family exhibition to the line of visitors waiting for their turn at the Millennium Falcon™ Experience, past the iconic Indiana Obelisk and out to the canal that stretches off toward the rest of state, including our eleven historic sites – it felt very much like standing at a crossroads with a truly remarkable view. This has been an extremely exciting year at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. We’ve been to a galaxy far, far away with Star WarsŽ: Where Science Meets Imagination, and come home again to our own back yard with Amazing Maize. We’ve introduced visitors to sights as old as Fred, our iconic mastodon, and to ideas as modern as the cutting-edge discussion in our Science Nights lecture series. Our historic sites have offered an array of programming, from recreations like the Muster on the Wabash at Fort Knox II to nature walks in the Limberlost, offering Hoosiers even more opportunities to explore their Indiana roots. What brings it all together, though, are Hoosiers. Now more than ever, we are dedicated to not only preserving and interpreting our collective heritage, but also to presenting it in a fresh and interesting way, both to Hoosiers by birth and to Hoosiers at heart. We have expanded our summer camp program to provide more educational opportunities for children, and we’re adding new science, technology, engineering and math initiatives to help ready students for their future. We are forward-focused in many ways. We teach Indiana’s children about our history, our achievements, and our potential as they prepare to lead us into Indiana’s future. We have also begun to look toward Indiana’s Bicentennial, and as we do, we are re-committing ourselves to our role as stewards of Indiana’s cultural heritage. We are pleased with the financial progress we’ve made, and will continue to be devoted to creating the sort of public/private partnership that allows us to meet the challenges of the rapidly-changing world we’re charged with interpreting, not just effectively, but also successfully. As an institution, we see our history spread out behind us and our future stretching out ahead, and just as I love the vista from the museum’s bridge, I am so excited to be standing on the metaphorical bridge between what has been and what is yet to be. Thank you for standing here with me. I hope you enjoy the view. Sincerely,
Thomas A. King President & CEO

Centers of
Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites President and CEO, Tom King, speaking in front of Fred the Mastodon.
Excellence The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is a broad organization, both geographically and categorically. As we strive to preserve, interpret and present Indiana’s cultural and natural history, we focus on six Centers of Excellence – areas where our collections and expertise are especially rich. Together they serve as a framework for our wider mission. These six Centers; Abraham Lincoln, Quilts, Archaeology, Ice Age Paleontology, Indiana Artists, and Indiana Industry and Technology, touch everyone from the museum visitors who see our exhibitions, to the volunteers who help make discoveries on our paleontological digs, to staff like Ron Richards, the Indiana State Museum Senior Research Curator of Paleobiology. When Fred, the Buesching mastodon, was revealed to the public in January of 2013, no one was more excited than Ron. “What makes Fred so significant is that more than 85% of the skeleton was recovered, and the bones – were largely intact,” he said. Now an iconic symbol of the Indiana State Museum

The thrill of Fred’s unveiling echoed across the state, and resonated especially strongly with Michele Greenan, who works in another of the Indiana State Museum’s Centers of Excellence, archaeology. In her role as Director of Archaeology, Michele studies, among other things, the native Hopewell and Mississippian cultures and the historic archaeology related to the state’s settlement. The Angel Mounds State Historic Site – a prehistoric hub of these native cultures – has contributed to our understanding of Indiana’s early peoples. “At the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, we have the ability to bring our excavated materials directly from the

Within its collection of over half a million objects, the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites has six Centers of Excellence distinguished by the extraordinary breadth and quality of the material and the associated staff expertise. The Centers of Excellence are the basis for exhibitions, educational programming, publications, research and collaborations with numerous institutions and scholars.
Ice Age Paleontology
Many of the specimens in our collection were gathered during Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites field expeditions. Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is the authority and resource base on Ice Age paleontology for Indiana, and has the largest collection of mastodons in the Midwest.
Abraham Lincoln
The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, one of the most important collections of material relating to Abraham Lincoln, is housed, maintained and interpreted by the Indiana State Museum in conjunction with the Allen County Public Library.
Indiana Art and Artists
Another of our Centers of Excellence is historic and contemporary Indiana art, including the largest collection of work by Hoosier Group impressionist T.C. Steele. Steele’s Brown County home and studio is one of our eleven State Historic Sites.
Quilts
Our renowned textiles include one of the best-documented Amish quilt collections in existence.
Indiana Industry and Technology
Our collection features technical innovations and products that have profoundly affected life in Indiana and beyond, and includes items of historic, cultural and industrial significance.
Archaeology
Our areas of study include native Hopewell and Mississippian cultures and our collection includes historic archaeological material related to the state’s settlement.

The people who work within our Centers of Excellence are truly passionate about their areas of expertise. Mary Jane Teeters-Eichacker, Curator of Social History at the Indiana State Museum, lights up when she discusses the Pottinger Collection of Indiana Amish Quilts. “[It’s] so valuable because of its documentation. We know, not just suspect, who made many of the quilts, who they were made for, when, and where they lived. Many museums have spectacular Amish quilts which they can identify only generally; ‘Quilt, Amish; Probably Midwestern, c. 1930’. In contrast, many of the quilts in the Indiana State Museum’s collection have an extraordinary level of information. For example, that Susie J. Christner made the exact same blinding yellow and black quilt eleven times, so none of her children would feel slighted. We have four of the eleven. The Indiana State Museum has several examples of multiple quilts from the same maker, so in this collection we can actually examine a body of work from a single Amish woman, sometimes even including the templates she used for quilting.“ It is this sort of enthusiasm for our shared Hoosier heritage that defines not only our staff, members, and visitors, but also the museum and historic sites themselves. This passion for our Hoosier heritage stretches from the artisans who painstakingly crafted the quilts in the Pottinger Collection to the artists featured in
Yellow and black quilt, created by Susie J. Christner.
our collection of art by Hoosier artists like James Spencer Russell. Steve Conant, a member of and long-time donor to the Indiana State Museum, echoes this sentiment. “ …The Indiana State Museum, in regard to Fine Arts, is where you are most likely to see work by Indiana artists, and the exhibitions at this institution are well done. This may consist of work by the Hoosier Group, their students, or contemporary artists of all media, or less often, a solo show of a particular artist, such as the James Spencer Russell exhibit that is currently being created.” This year, the Indiana State Museum was fortunate to be able to expand our collection through a remarkable gift from First Financial Bank; seven historical and contemporary works by important Indiana artists including: William Forsyth,
Charles Dahlgren and Arne Kvaalen. This donation not only strengthens the museum’s position in traditional Indiana art, but expands our collection of significant works by living Indiana artists. From modern artists to legendary American leaders, our Centers of Excellence are wide-ranging. Abraham Lincoln is not only an integral part of of Indiana history, he’s an essential part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. The incredible Lincoln Financial Foundation collection of Lincoln artifacts, along with our partnerships with the Lincoln Financial Group and the Allen County Public Library, consistently allows us to shine in the realm of preserving and presenting the story of our sixteenth President. Nancy Rogers of the Lincoln Financial Group says that their partnership with the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites “… helps bring Lincoln’s legacy to life.”

field to the exhibition. We are the only institution in Indiana that can excavate, analyze, curate, and exhibit our collections. It’s a bit like ‘one-stop-shopping’ for archaeology. Our focus is not just on getting artifacts and doing excavations, but also on the conservation and preservation of archaeological resources that are still hidden beneath the ground. The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites stands out as the only institution focused on the long-term stewardship and conservation of resources yet to be unearthed – as well as those that have been excavated.”

Charles Dahlgren (1864-1955) “Route 42A” date unknown. Oil on board, 38˝x44˝ Originally, a Chicago artist, Dahlgren was a member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association. He was so fond of Brown County that he requested his ashes to be spread there near his favorite tree, a white oak that had been the subject of his painting.
This year, the Indiana State Museum presented a side of Lincoln that few have had a chance to see through the exhibition The Lincolns: Five Generations of an American Family. “Before he became a national treasure, Abraham Lincoln was a son, a brother, a husband and father. For all that people think they know about Lincoln the historical figure, few know much about Lincoln the human being. The exhibition was a revelation for many of our visitors,” says Dale Ogden, Senior Curator of Cultural History at the Indiana State Museum. Of the many roles that the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites fill, our stewardship of the Lincoln Collection is one of the roles that best defines us, and of which we are most proud. One cannot think of Indiana Industry and Technology without also thinking of agriculture. The advancement in these areas has defined much of Indiana’s history, and that was very evident in the exhibition Amazing Maize, which examined the history and worldwide impact of corn.

As we continue to steward Indiana’s cultural heritage, we are often awed by the breadth of the subject. Among all the riches that the state has to offer, these Centers of Excellence are the lens through which we view our work. These six Centers reflect our passion, our study, and our deep belief in the importance of the Hoosier state not only in regards to our collective history but as it pertains to our future as a whole.

events & exhibits Over the last year, the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites has worked hard to meet our mission, with efforts ranging from the presentation of Star Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination to the painstaking restoration of the Fauntleroy Home in Historic New Harmony. Our exhibitions, events and discoveries have made this one of the most exciting years in our institution’s history. The Lincolns: Five Generations of an American Family highlighted the depth of the museum’s Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, one of the most important collections of material relating to Abraham Lincoln and his times in the country, while Amazing Maize helped
our visitors explore one of Indiana’s most critical industries, agriculture.
In addition to the museum’s exhibitions, new endeavors were undertaken in many locations this year, including Historic New Harmony. Amanda Bryden, New Harmony State Historic Site Property Manager, discusses the courage required to undertake the restoration of the Fauntleroy Home: “Why courage? Seeing the ‘guts’ of the structure was neat but also scary. The Fauntleroy Home was like a puzzle. There were literally and figuratively many pieces that needed to be

One of our most awe-inspiring collections, though, shows just how broad the industry in our state is. We are proud stewards of the RCA television collection, which was brought to the museum through the efforts of Dave Arland, museum supporter. “Thompson Electronics and former RCA employees wanted to salute the long history of electronics in the state. Tens of thousands of Hoosiers have been part of this industry,” says Dave. The Indiana State Museum not only maintains this remarkable collection technological artifacts, we also use them in our efforts to educate young Hoosiers about the history of industry and technology in Indiana.

Forward 2013-2014 Exhibitions and Events
Fulfilling part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites mission to bring the world to Indiana, the Indiana State Museum was thrilled to host Star Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination. Traci Cromwell, Director of Collections, remembers how the exhibition “…brought many multigeneration families into the museum to experience the science and artistry behind the movies. These families also enjoyed all of the fun, family-oriented programs that were added during the run of the exhibition, from costume parties to lectures given by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology professors.”

Amazingly, during the dedication ceremonies a Bald Eagle circled above the building several times; nature’s form of a “flyover” for a site dedicated to nature’s conservation and the history of the efforts Gene Stratton-Porter. “I will be forever thankful to the 501st Legion of Indiana for making this exhibit a huge success,” says Traci. “They volunteered hundreds of hours dressed in their extraordinary costumes from the Star Wars® films, interacting with our visitors. It was a wonderful feeling to see visitors to the Indiana State Museum so thrilled to have their photo taken next to the 501st Darth Vader character in front of the original Darth Vader costume used in the movies.” This year, the museum also played host to Eternal James Dean and Amazing Maize, celebrating Indiana’s cultural and agricultural heritage. Amazing Maize had over 65,000 visitors during its time at the Indiana State Museum, and now resides permanently at The Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The Corn Palace is an internationally known tourist attraction for Mitchell and now Amazing Maize is part of that draw. Todd Stockwell, Curator of Industry and Technology at the Indiana State Museum says: “ The relationship with [The Corn Palace]

just developed, and they came back to us and asked what was going to happen to the exhibition. We eventually came to the conclusion that we could turn over most of the existing exhibition to them and let it have a new life outside of the museum.” From pop culture to history to industry, the activities at the 12 locations in the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites system has something for everyone, just like the Hoosier state itself.

“The Indiana State Museum speaks to us about our values, our standards, our strengths, our style and our personality. This remarkable museum informs about who we are as Hoosiers: where we came from and what elements will probably guide our future decisions. And it speaks to us on many levels: to children, to adults, and to scholars.” Marianne W. Tobias

little sister, Ellie, through the galleries. “The museum is a second home to him. He’s going to look back and like Abe Lincoln say, ‘Here is where I grew up,’” says Natalie.
The mission of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is to preserve, interpret and present our shared heritage. To this end, it is the people of the Hoosier state who make our work both possible and worthwhile. The volunteers who give selflessly of their time, the visitors who come back again and again, the school teachers who bring their classes to our programs every year without fail – these are the people we serve with our mission, and also the people on whom we rely as we strive to accomplish it.
An enormous part of our mission is to link the children of today to Indiana’s past. With its mansard roof and majestic detail, each year the Culbertson Mansion hosts thousands of school children, volunteers and local citizens through a series of guided tours and award-winning programs. “Children gasp, asking ‘Is that real gold?!’ referring to the 23-carat gold leafing seen throughout the building,” says Jessica Stavros, Program Manager at Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site. By telling the stories of our heritage in a way that contextualizes Indiana’s place in the world, we equip those who will become Indiana’s decision-makers to lead our state into a future that is as rich as our past. Kids like Jammer – who is so passionate about the Indiana State Museum that he once said that he wanted to live in Indiana when he grew up, so that he wouldn’t miss any new exhibitions – are the conduit for our work.
Civic leader Marianne Tobias captured this sentiment perfectly at the 2013 Tribute Dinner, when she said: “The Indiana State Museum speaks to us about our values, our standards, our strengths, our style and our personality. This remarkable museum informs about who we are as Hoosiers: where we came from and what elements will probably guide our future decisions. And it speaks to us on many levels: to children, to adults, and to scholars.” The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is dedicated to Hoosiers, past, present and future. Natalie Himebaugh and her family are perfect examples of the impact our work can have. Her son, Jammer, has been coming to the museum regularly for years. He participates in our summer camp programs, and guides his

Artist Kris Lemmon of Deco Works Studio restores the intricate detail in the Culbertson Mansion’s Middle Bedroom ceiling. The designs are typical to the era, but Lemmon says the color palette used throughout the mansion is striking and quite unique, making this State Historic Site a true masterpiece of Victorian artistry.

I am keenly interested in preserving and sharing our Indiana history and natural history with this generation and generations to come. If you can spark an interest or new

idea in just one child, it makes your time worthwhile.” Brad’s passion for our mission is reflected by other volunteers, staff and donors like Jan Snowden. Many visitors to the museum don’t know Jan Snowden’s name, but they certainly know Jan. For years, Jan has volunteered her time to don a costume and play the character of Raggedy Ann. “The smiles and hugs are the best part of being Raggedy Ann,” says Jan. “This rag doll is such an important bit of Indiana history.” Seeing the delighted smiles of children so engaged with something from Indiana’s past has inspired Jan to leave a legacy to the Indiana State Museum and Historic sites. Her passion,
and part of our mission, is to bring history like Raggedy Ann alive so that children can engage with their Hoosier heritage in such a way that they don’t just learn about it – they learn to love it, too. These are the people who bring our mission to life. In many ways, they, themselves, are our mission, because it is through them and for them that we are able to do the work that we believe is critical to preserving our past and promoting our future. We are Hoosiers, and this both is and will be our legacy.
