A LETTER FROM TOM KING This fall, we are celebrating big changes at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. From unveiling three newly-renovated core galleries on November 2nd, to celebrating our newest exhibition, Design Zone, to looking forward to the opening of the brand-new interpretive center at the Levi Coffin State Historic Site, we’re in the middle of the remarkable project of recreating ourselves. As we look forward to the ISMHS’s 150th anniversary in 2019, we’re making improvements and/or restorations at every single site in our system. From the restoration of Selma Steele’s gardens at the House of the Singing Winds to important repairs at the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site to the new immersive, interactive galleries at the Indiana State Museum, we are putting bold new plans into action. Even in the midst of all this change, we welcome perennial favorites like our annual holiday celebration, Celebration Crossing, where visitors can meet with Santa, ride the Celebration Crossing Express, and see the enormous 92 county tree that graces our entryway. There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites family. Later in this issue of Expectations, you’ll read about the remarkable projects, events and exhibits that we’re anticipating, and we want you to be front and center for these incredible changes. Visitors can experiment with tube length and pitch to create music with the Whack-a-Phone, explore the math behind rhythm and music by mixing a song on a Drum Machine, and as the Light Show DJ, discover how laser light show technicians create mesmerizing patterns that get people dancing. When they move from sound to action, visitors have a chance to explore the math and physics behind anything that moves. From what it takes to create a thrilling ride in Roller Coaster Hills, to exploring how hill height and speed are needed to create a Fast Tracks roller coaster course, visitors can think through the challenges, and then test their design with a virtual skater and ride the course!

DESIGN ZONE
The Indiana State Museum is celebrating 2017 as the Year of Science, and we’re kicking that off a bit early with our newest exibition, Design Zone. In this exciting, hands-on exhibition, visitors will discover the secrets behind how videogame developers, music producers, roller coaster designers and other creative problem solvers do what they do. Design Zone is a highly interactive exhibition where visitors can explore a variety of creative concepts to learn the processes and tools needed to create a successful design. Design Zone is organized into three thematic zones, all highlighting the importance of science and mathematical thinking in areas critical to building creativity and innovation: art, music and engineering. In the art-focused area, visitors discover the math behind visual creativity. Designers use scale, patterns and other key mathematical concepts to turn visual ideas into reality.
Visitors can explore the relationship between weights and distance by creating their own colorful two-dimensional mobile in Balancing Art, navigate a Marble Maze, adjusting the variables in a video game to create the highest score, and test their abilities to continue a pattern in three dimensions as they Build a Tower. In the music-centric area, visitors explore relationships between length and pitch in musical instruments, ratios and rhythms, and visual representations of sound.

This November, the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites will unveil three remarkable, completely renovated core galleries; Natural Regions, Contested Territory and the 19th State. Fully-immersive and remarkably interactive, these three galleries represent some of the first steps in a multi-year plan to ensure that the museum reaches its 150th anniversary in 2019 as the most dynamic, interesting, forward-thinking place to learn about Indiana. As part of these efforts we’ve taken on projects at all 12 of our locations – from shoring up the foundation at the First State Capitol in Corydon to building a new interpretive center at the Levi Coffin State Historic Site, to expanding the permanent galleries at the museum in Indianapolis.

When the work at the ISM is complete we’ll have fully updated the museum’s core galleries, dedicated to showcasing all that is authentically wondrous about Indiana. With the renovations, we’ll have gained an additional 3,000 square feet of gallery space – something unheard of without building a whole new facility. We’ll have immersive galleries and new hands-on experiences that feature our world-class collection highlighting the stories of Hoosiers throughout history. We’re also creating new ways to change those stories and tell more of them, more often. From walking through an ice tunnel to crawling into a cave, or exploring a pioneer cabin, you’ll see how Indiana was formed and how it continues to form our future. The three galleries that will open this November include Natural Regions, Contested Territory, and 19th State.
We’ve created a new system that expands our abilities to do more with interactives and videos, while also showcasing artifacts in new ways. For example, we’re creating a custom interactive using technology so new that we have serial #001 for a clear touch screen that will allow visitors to load their own covered wagon to see just how hard it was to decide what to take on the journey to Indiana. We worked with the Miami Nation to record Little Turtle’s speech in the Miami language and have created a space where you can listen to it in Miami and English (and see it written out) as it would have been in 1795. You can also explore three of the natural regions of Indiana as they would have appeared in the 1800’s – and see human impact on one of those regions as it appears today.

This winter we’ll begin Phase Two of our renovations, which includes the Naturalist’s Lab and the pre-historic Native Americans and Ice Age galleries. Many of the objects and stories that are currently on display in these areas will appear in temporary exhibitions and programming throughout the year, including in Ice Age Graveyards exhibition opening in February 2017. Phase Two will be completed in the fall of 2017, and the last three phases will continue to be staggered and completed over the following two years. We’re looking forward to sharing the completion of the renovations with you in the fall of 2019.

The state historic sites are also undergoing changes as part of this initiative. The Corydon Capitol building had major structural repairs, which insure that the building will remain standing and sound for many, many years to come. The gardens at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site underwent a major restoration, bringing them back to the full glory of Selma Steele’s time at the House of the Singing Winds. Repairs and restorations have been undertaken at every single one of our sites, but none have been as major as the construction of a new interpretive center at the Levi Coffin State Historic Site. We have already raised $15.7 million, and we’re working to raise an additional $2.9 million. VISITING THE PAST The New Interpretive Center at the Levi Coffin State Historic Site By: Laura Minzes

When the Levi Coffin Visitor Center opens in December 2016, it will be the culmination of several decades of vision and work. A letter written in 1975 discussed the possibility of the property next door to the site becoming a visitor center. While the Levi Coffin State Historic Site has been welcoming visitors for years, there has never been a dedicated place for those who come to hear the stories of the remarkable men and women who passed through these walls. Without room for exhibitions, interpretation, or even public restrooms, the lack of a visitors center has been a major limitation for the site…but all that it about to change.

The Levi Coffin State Historic Site includes the house that the Coffins built in 1839 after they had been in Newport (now Fountain City) for 13 years. By the time they built the house, they had been very active abolitionists in the Underground Railroad movement. In order to better serve in this way, they incorporated unique features into the house’s construction. These unusual features have made the house an amazing place to tell the stories of the Coffins and the Freedom Seekers they helped. However, there is much more to the story at this site. First and foremost, the visitor center will be where the stories of the Freedom Seekers who came through the Coffin house are told. Visitors will explore how these brave people made the courageous - and often very frightening - choice to leave the families they loved and places they knew in order to seek freedom. In addition, Levi and Catharine Coffin made the conscious decision to fight slavery openly in part by selling only non-slave-made goods – known as free produce – in the stores that they moved to Cincinnati to operate. The Coffins’ place in history will also be explained in the context of what was happening in the world around them during their lifetimes.

The location of the former residence next door is ideal for the visitors’ center, but the fact that the nowconverted building actually pre-dates the Coffin House by two years makes it extremely special. Three of the facades of the building are replicated so that they look the way they would have during the Coffins’ time in Newport. In addition, having a visitors center allows many new opportunities for the site. Now able to be open year-round with permanent staff, the center will provide other, much-needed visitor amenities such as programming space for classes, lectures, etc., and restrooms.

Through these new interpretive and operational opportunities, a new era will begin on Dec. 9, 2016 when the site opens to the public and these humble, brave and dedicated people will be honored and their stories told in as immersive a way as possible. CELEBRATION CROSSING RETURNS Happy Holidays! The sights and sounds of the season are upon us, with stores already stocking holiday decorations, and plans for celebrations being made. The Indiana State Museum is no exception, and we’re looking forward to another magical holiday season. Santa and Mrs. Claus will kick off Celebration Crossing when they land on the front lawn in a helicopter on November 25th. After greeting the crowd, they’ll move inside to their house on level one, where visitors can share their holiday wishes and also take a peek into the newly-opened Natural Regions gallery – don’t forget to check out the black bear who’s keeping watch over all the holiday festivities.
