About Hans Popper MD, PhD
The driving force behind the founding of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Association for the Study of the Liver, Dr. Popper made or contributed to many of hepatology’s major scientific advances over his half-century in medicine. He authored over 800 papers and 22 books, including the first English language textbook on the liver, and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. By the end of his career, he was described as “the reigning monarch of modern hepatology”, considered by many to be the founding father of his field, and had accumulated over a dozen honorary degrees, including from Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Dr. Hans Popper was a world-renowned pathologist, hepatologist, and academic leader who was pivotal in the creation and founding of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) and served as its inaugural Dean and later President. Born in Vienna in 1903 from a long line of physicians, he graduated from the Medical School of the University of Vienna in 1928. As the situation in Europe became dangerous for the Jewish community, Dr. Popper escaped to Chicago in 1938, where he obtained a PhD in physiology at the University of Illinois.
From 1957, he was the Director of the Department of Pathology at the Mount Sinai Hospital and established Mount Sinai with its enduring international reputation in liver research and care. He infused the fledgling Mount Sinai School of Medicine with an early appreciation of the importance of community and environmental medicine.
Late in life, he became fluent in the emerging field of molecular biology, remained an active adviser to the National Institute of Health, and continued to enjoy teaching around the microscope to Mount Sinai medical students and residents. Highly regarded as a teacher and mentor, Dr. Popper delivered the first academic lectures to incoming medical students each year from the School’s inception until his death in 1988.
We are pleased to honor his legacy with a keynote speaker at every Mount Sinai White Coat Ceremony.

The Leni and Peter W. May Department of Medical Education welcomes our first-year medical students!
The White Coat Ceremony is a “rite of passage” for beginning medical students that creates a psychological contract for professionalism and empathy in the practice of medicine. The event emphasizes the importance of both scientific excellence and compassionate care for the patient.

• To lend our expertise to public discourse with integrity.
• To remain compassionate in the face of stressful days and sleepless nights.
With appreciation for the shared position in which we find ourselves and with gratitude to the people who have supported our journeys, we collectively commit:
• To learn for and from our patients, colleagues, and communities, with an open heart and mind.
• To leverage our privilege and knowledge to improve access to high-quality, equitable care.
ICAHN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CLASS OF 2026
• To see patients as our partners and as the sole expert on their individual experiences.
Student Oath
• To know our patients, appreciate their identities, and amplify their voices.
• To leave medicine better than we found it by continually reexamining ourselves and our institutions. We honor the responsibilities with which we are entrusted. We pledge to hold ourselves and one another accountable to these commitments.
18
• To be fierce innovators in the art and science of medicine.
• To demonstrate humility by recognizing personal and scientific limitations, as well as the past injustices of medicine.
• To combat present injustices and dismantle systems of oppression.
• To demonstrate that self-examination means as much as examinations.
• To meet you where you are and get you where you want to be.
• To not just teach, but also nurture.
• To have the courage to stand up for the oppressed and vulnerable and against prejudice and racism in all that we do.
Faculty Pledge
• To never lose sight of our wellness and the wellness of all of those around us.
• To inspire you to respect the art and science of medicine, but also to question the status quo.
The mission of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is to produce physicians and scientists who are prepared to enter society as informed advocates and activists who are able to advance clinical care and science and promote change.
• To recognize that our opportunity to teach is also our opportunity to learn.
• To be kind in evaluating you and ourselves.
• To engage you in the joy and privilege of practicing the art and science of medicine and the rewards of learning for life.
• To share of both our craft and ourselves.
We, the faculty, seek to embody this mission and so pledge the following to you, our students, in our effort to help you to become the best possible physicians and your best possible selves:
• To uphold the highest standards in scientific and medical research.
• To be aware of our own biases and those around us and strive to eliminate them.
• To serve as models for caring, competent, and unbiased care of our patients.
• And, finally, to never forget as physicians, scientists, and educators what we know as human beings.
