THE JOURNEY GARDEN Self and Identity • Life and Mortality • Nature and the World. Living in our physical form; looking at our relationship to our bodies, to other people and the world This is an environment created for social interaction, play, reflection, activity, engaging, walking, sitting and talking, sitting and watching. The landscape design relates to its surrounding context of the city of Canberra, Australian National Capital, 280 km (170 m) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 m) north-east of Melbourne. SITE LOCATION This is a city designed by architects Walter Burley Griffen and Marion Mahony Griffen, 1913, an urban plan influenced by the ‘garden city movement’ . The artificial lake, Lake Burley Griffin, was completed in 1964, in the centre of the city. ‘The Journey Garden’ is located in the north eastern side of The Museum of Australian Democracy, Canberra ACT, Australia, formerly, Old Parliament House, facing outwards to Lake Burley Griffen. DESIGN CONCEPT invites people to walk more, bring more life and vitality to the open environment. • The Journey is made by traversing a group interconnected areas designed to evoke a fulfilling and engaging experience. • The elemental components create a visual spectacle using the integration of technology, art and design and engaging the visitor’s spatial intelligence. • The visitors are: local residents, tourists, students, families, couples and groups of friends Key ideas embedded in a framework presentation; • created flow • observation points • resting points • relationship between each point, logical to and from movement • logical passages • use local attributes; Canberra map and layout Diagrammed project with visitor’s experiences that: • challenge and entertain • sensory • physical • cerebal • passive and active use of a city space day and night 2/20

THE VIBE What’s in it for the visitor? The realisation of a benefit for people in the public realm of a large waterside landscape, a place to breathe, hear natural sounds, walk, sit, reflect, cycle amongst trees, tactile elements, water, no cars, pedestrian places, watch the passing parade. In this social environment, 70% of experiences are from an exciting visual theatre. (Gehl 2010) Nature and the World • Circle 1 - Island • • • •
Landscaped with mound, swales and lookout points small curved pathways revealing seating areas waterbound the layout is a metaphorical Tree of Life, with pathways and planted shrubs to denote the tree.
Life and Mortality • Circle 2 - Stepping Stones Walking, playing, interacting • participant steps onto ‘stones’, • the pressure and weight sends out ripples of circular light rings, emission of sounds and lights • each one hums a series of low frequencies • it holds the trail of the user for timed interval • night: illuminated in chroma Canal joining circle 2 to 3 • A connective pathway traversing over a stepping stones, under a canopy of hoops • across the broad walk and passing under an archway and to enter an island with water around • Pedestrian and Cyclists share a series of curved pathway
Self and identity • Circle 3 water and reflection Natural sounds, sitting, reflecting, watching Pathways that traverse in many directions on two levels. Small circular seating areas for socialising or reflective time. The ground plane has a grid formation of small holes for water to drain downwards, like a plughole or reverse and bubble up. The flow speed is variable. The water is recycled from the surface of the pond.
Avenues of trees Lines of closely planted, deciduous and coniferous trees for shady walks in hot weather, under canopies of boughs and leaves. Autumn: listening as they flutter to earth and walk through kicking thick layers of leaves. “Key to a successful public place is using scale and materials?” 1 Jan Gehl “Both important, scale is very important, 5kmph. scale, that corresponds with our human senses made for people moving about with that speed, to move faster means bigger signs and info and bigger spaces. Spaces that are in harmony with the human body and the way we move and the way are senses work, we perceive them as rather comfortable and nice places to stay”

2 Jan Gehl “Urban public spaces have to have good edges, life grows from the edge towards the middle, if the edge of a public space is not attractive and lively, has to be attractive and lively, by the edge people with naturally gather and stand, if they are alone people start to sit at the edge, children hang by the door the before as starting to play in the middle of the street, play has to happen in the centre.” VISUAL IDENTITY SYSTEM VIS Typography and font family usage Font Myriad Pro: Regular, Semi-Bold, Bold, Roman and Italic, Baskerville Regular Headings Ranged left, upper and lower case. ‘SELF’ Circle 2 50M diameter Description Wet edge, flat pond with thick translucent base, light box, series in three sizes of ‘pads’ for the action of ‘stepping on stones’. Pads are flexible, fitted from a central point on the underside. The pond is filled to a depth of 50cm with water recycled from the lake, below the pads. How it works Pressure, weight, speed, duration effects a radiance of coloured light circles from the epicentre of each pad. Each person’s ‘journey’ is trailed with the lights for one minute. • volume • duration • number of stones steps • tracking pathways • parking a trail

Touch screens will operate in several languages, have audio sections that open when touching the elements that open up a pathway on a map. “From here the there” is a voice over guide that talks through step-by-step. Three logos use greys and pastels, alternating with bright luminescent colours, to give the same effect at the stepping stones in circle. Touch screens are designed to work intuitively so that the user is unaware of learning ‘how to use the manual.
