Research My font was inspired by the font Red Moon Rising which I found on the website Dafont.com. I was looking for a geometrically inspired font as I am interested in this kind of font. I like this font as it is quite simplistic and I think it would be suitable for mainly headings and titles as it would be illegible if it was used in smaller text due to the extra features like the lines. This font was most likely created using a font like Adobe Illustrator or it could of been hand drawn and modified using Adobe Illustrator due to it being so exact with the lines as they are completely straight and parralel to the bars, stems, legs and bowls of letters. Prior to completeing my research I experimented with creating my own fonts and giving pre-exsisting fonts a personalised twist, I annotated each ot my fonts in my sketchbook in more depth. By doing this I got more confident in the theme I wanted my font to have.
I liked a few of these fonts that I found on the website Pinterest.com as there was a contrast between hand drawn and digital fonts. Many of the handrawn fonts I liked more as I had an understanding of the time it takes to create a font by hand and I have commented about how intricate some of the hand drawn fonts in my annotations. Many of the digitally developed designs were most likely created using a pre-exsisting font which had had alterations made to the kerning or leading of the text or alterations to certain features of a pre-exsisting font to create a new one. The designs and fonts which do not appear to be pre-exsisting may have been created using Adobe Illustrator or possibly even Adobe Photoshop depending on the preference of the designer.
Concepts
After researching different fonts and finding a font that I wanted to develop I created hand drawn concepts. I did this by tracing over the pre-exsisting font Red Moon Rising and then I altered different parts of individual letters and added dots and lines to the letters to create a theme for my font. After tracing and altering the preexsisting font I then photocopied it and drew over it in a black fine liner as I knew that the website I would be using to make my font, myscriptfont.com, would require me to use a black or possibly a dark blue pen as another colour pen would possibly not work when I scanned in my concept design. I then researched into the terminology of letters and what they consist of, on the right there is an example of how I showed and learnt my letter terminology. I like the font I have created and I am happy that it follows the theme I wanted it to however could of used a finer pen to make the font clearer when scanned.
Developement After creating my final concept drawings I scanned it in, to create and down load my font I had to ensure that everything was neat then I downloaded the myscriptfont.com template and placed my individual letters where it was marked on the template using Adobe Photoshop, I found this quite difficult to do as each letter had its own layer which had to be labled, to avoid confusion, and then placed where it needed to be as each letter had its own box on the template and had to be placed on a baseline. Once my template was filled I downloaded the finished and completed font which I thought looked quite good, I had to test out my font to see whether the kerning or leading needed to be adjusted. I also tested the size of the font to see whether it was suitable for smaller text, to which I found out when it is set at a smaller point it is illegible and the theme of the font is hard to notice, so I decided it would be more suitable for headings and titles due to this. I did the test in Adobe InDesign which I know is most suitable for creating documents regarding text and layout.
Final Artwork
Here is my finalised font and my final artworks. I created the background for the font on the left on Adobe Photoshop and then used the same image to fill the font on the right using Adobe Photoshop using a technique I was taught. I wanted to experimentby doing both of these artworks as I wanted to see how my font would look. I prefer the artwork on the left as the one on the right the letters on the bottom and top row did not get filled with the colour like I wanted it to.
I am quite pleased with my final font as it followed the theme I chose well however I do think I could of altered the kerning and baseline a bit to make it more even and uniform but I think it gives the font a bit of character. I also think I should of neatened up a few of the lines on the individual letters and I could of done this by using Adobe Photoshop or by retracing the font by hand, I also think I should of created punctuation for the font and developed it further and improved the font more by doing this.
