WALL STREET HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS One day during my lunch break I walked past a Holiday Inn Express. I got a clear view of the small lobby due to an inordinately large window that allowed pedestrians to peak in. Normally this is a great design aspect but, unfortunately in this instance it wasn’t. The lobby lacked substance; it lacked a “popping” element that would draw people in. If I were to redesign this Holiday Inn Express I would bring more color into the room to make the space pop to draw more people in and make use of the large front window. I chose Kvadrat's Hallingdal 65 in colorway 420 for the Colina M Chair by Arper to establish a “popping” element. My inspiration for the furniture selection was drawn from the wired statement piece on the wall. All the bases of the furniture have a wired and angular look that gives the room a clean modern appearance. I chose to use the Static (cream/black) area rug by Judy Ross Textiles because it brings attention to the area. I chose to use Base Brass Floor Lamp by Tom Dixon and the Trace small coffee and side table by Naughtone because the clean and sleek lines that have a soft roundness. Overall, my design intent displays a sophisticated yet modern lobby that draws attention to the space.

An environment that encourages support and learning through the process of community living to enable growth. The space is organized by the section cut of a tree trunk. The tree trunk symbolizes the growth of individuals experiencing the space. Within the space there are nesting areas that encourages support for one another, interaction and self improvement.

Armory Leigh Street I-95 Residents Within a 4-Block Walking Radius
The Leigh Street Armory has been transformed as part of the VCUarts Undergraduate Research Grant into a community arts center. Functioning as a means of constructive expression for underserved members in the Jackson Ward area, the center also caters to local artists as a space to exhibit or create work and has the potential to engage on an even wider geographic scale. Designed to brighten the Armory from within, the space utilizes glass and other reflective surfaces, such as stainless steel, to create a greater sense of air and breathability while emphasizing the relationship between new forms and the original brick structure. This feeling is partially conceptualized in the gallery as art floats above brick and an interchangeable display panel system delicately perches above the floor, maximizing the structure’s integrity and drawing focus to what once was.

To show a monumental atmosphere the space is inspired by Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA in a section cut view. The main wall in the middle of the space represents the street median and trees.

PROCCESSWORK FOR RECEPTION DESK
Trends generally cycle back at least once in some ones life time, usually through communication. Communication such as word of mouth and sight keeps trends alive. As well as keeps function alive in communities. To symbolize this, the floor plan is open with no walls connecting to the ceiling except in rooms that need privacy. The office has many community rooms that are the main focus of the space to show that communication is key to keep things functioning. When thinking about recycling of trends a circular shape comes to mind which symbolizes the process. The office space has circular features such as, furniture and walls that represent the concept.

The Center for Undecided Voters (CUV) is an environment where undecided voters can come to learn about different campaigns. The campaign pop-ups give out information through brochures, books and iPads. While in the CUV voters are able to take iPads anywhere on the space to do their own research, including to the Factcheck.org offices to get unbiased opinions. There are designated locations in the CUV that allow voters to gather their thoughts on their experience, Lounge areas. The lounge areas have different space planning in each location which allows voters to either contemplate alone or gather with others. The CUV is a safe environment to become aware of political diversity.
