THE LEIGH STREET ARMORY PROJECT

RECOVERY & REVITALIZATION 20

The Leigh Street Armory has been transformed as part of the VCUarts Undergraduate Research Grant into a community arts center. Functioning as a means of constructive expression for underserved members in the Jackson Ward area, the center also caters to local artists as a space to exhibit or create work and has the potential to engage on an even wider geographic scale. Designed to brighten the Armory from within, the space utilizes glass and other reflective surfaces, such as stainless steel, to create a greater sense of air and breathability while emphasizing the relationship between new forms and the original brick structure. This feeling is partially conceptualized in the gallery as art floats above brick and an interchangeable display panel system delicately perches above the floor, maximizing the structureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s integrity and drawing focus to what once was.

Trends generally cycle back at least once in some ones life time, usually through communication. Communication such as word of mouth and sight keeps trends alive. As well as keeps function alive in communities. To symbolize this the floor plan is open with no walls connecting to the ceiling except in rooms that need to be private. The office has many community rooms that are the main focus of the space to show that communication is key to keep things functioning. When thinking about recycling of trends a circular shape that symbolizes the process comes to mind. The office space has circular feature such as furniture and walls that represent the concept.

The Community Conference Room goes along with the concept, communication through community areas. There can be a maximum of 14 people seated in this area. It can be shared by many small conferences in the space at once or one large one. This room is the main focus of the office space because of the custom made community table that is inspired by the community table style in restaurants. The conference room is in the middle of the office so all other rooms can access the room with not problem especially the executive offices that have a straight connection through their doors. There is a dropped ceiling in this space to make it more intimate.

The Presentation & Lounge Room goes along with the concept, communication through community areas. There can to be a maximum of 9 people seated in this space. The space is used for presentations to clients, employees and is a formal lounge area that is comfortable but professional.

The Work Space is a large room that has no vertical separation. The work stations are all connected and have little barriers to allow communication through staff and allows for collaboration. Each station has a clear board for writing down ideas and each table has a dry erase surface for the same purpose. The work space has easy access to the executive offices and locker rooms.

The Play & Cafe Room is a space that is accessed through the reception room and shown though the front windows. It show the clients that the office space is laid-back. Clients are able to get coffee from the cafe table that is located in between the two rooms and enter into the Play & Cafe Room to lounge and drink their coffee. The play room has three TVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and a gaming system for friendly playfulness between staff and client or staff and staff.

P R O C C E S S W O R K The CUV is an environment where undecided voters can come to learn about different campaigns. The campaign pop-ups give out information through brochures, books and iPads. While in the CUV voters are able to take iPads anywhere on the space to do their own research, including to the Factcheck.org offices to get unbiased opinions. There are designated locations in the CUV that allow voters to gather their thought on their experience, Lounge areas. The lounge areas have different space planning in each location which allows voters to either contemplate alone or gather with others. The CUV is a safe environment to become aware of political diversity.

RAYMOND WAITES NATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION ENTRY

INSPIRATIONAL ESSAY This winter break I wanted to gain a new perspective on life; so I decided to take a sign language class. My instructor, Della Jones, was born deaf and semi-mute. Della’s grandparents and great grandparents were deaf but her parents and siblings were not. As you can imagine this made it incredibly hard for her to relate to her immediate family and also be fully aware of her surroundings. After this experience she has dedicated her life to teaching deaf children and parents of deaf children sign language and coping mechanisms to enrich the lives. When I first met Della I already knew the alphabet in sign language. This was enough for us to establish a line of basic communication and also enabled me to learn the curriculum at an accelerated pace. After becoming more competent in sign language I was able to connect with Della and learn from her life experiences. The inspiration for my project comes from the lessons I’ve learned from Della. After taking this class and seeing Della teach me so much without being able to talk or hear I started to wonder what it would be like to live in her shoes. It made me search for ways that individuals could live in their own home without being able to hear their door bell or phone ring or even more important for ways to alert them if their fire alarm were gong off. People don’t consider the hardships of others. We take things for granted and I wanted to make this space special for Della, a place where she puts away her worries, where she relaxes and feels comfortable. To make a safe and easy living space specifically for deaf individuals I put in multiple alert mechanisms. For example, when someone is at the door two lights will flash in the rooms. Instead of a regular alarm clock, the bed is outfitted with a vibrating mattress. The control for these alerts is located in areas called the Control Centers. The main control center is located near the entrance while three additional Control Centers are located in the bathroom, sitting area and closet. I aspire to touch others like how Della has touched me when I start my career. I want to be able to help people communicate through interior design, help people understand what interior design is and that it is not just about décor but transforming a place into someone’s safe haven.

FLOOR PLAN ANALYSIS The floor plan for this space is open to allow Della to know what is happening in her surroundings and allows the light to travel to keep all areas bright enough for her to see properly. The Bedroom and Sitting Area is a total of 724 square feet, the Bathroom is a total of 322 square feet and the Closet is 143 square feet. In total the space is 1,189 square feet. When signing to Della about what she would want in her luxurious dream bedroom she said a large closet so that her and her husband could both fit with plenty of space, a large bathroom that she can relax in with a spa/jet bath tub and a lot of plants by a bay window so she can sit and enjoy the plants and looking outside. I wanted to give Della exactly what she desired because she deserves to have a space that is hers and makes her feel comfortable and safe.

The Bedroom has a minimal amount of furniture to make it an open space that allows Della to see better and understand what is going on in her surroundings. The main Control center is located at her desk that has the alerts and TTY, which is a teletype phone, and her video phone that allows her to communicate with others that are not hearing impaired. There is a electronic fireplace and television in the divider wall that is located directly in front of the bed.
