Cremona’s Territory Cremona’s territory is an area with unique and well recognizable characteristics, which includes three areas corresponding to its major towns: the provincial capital and the proper Cremona territory in the centre, Crema with its territory in the North-West, Casalmaggiore and its territory in the South-East. Each of these three areas has its own history, traditions and dialectal accent and a town in the centre, which is on a human scale in terms of size and lifestyle and renowned for its history and sights. The artistic, historical and cultural values related to the music, violin making and organ-making traditions in particular, the typical products and the natural resources give new knowledges and emotions to tourists and visitors. The art of making string instruments is definitely the trademark of Cremona and its territory all around the world: a tradition that can be still found in the over 150 violin making workshops that daily revive the tradition of masters Andrea Amati, Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù. A territory shaped by water, with the rivers Po, Adda, Oglio and Serio, that man was able to preserve in its specificities, while exploiting its characteristics. The fertile countryside guards century-old traditions, whose typical agricultural and food products are evidence of an excellence that is recognized worldwide. A territory to be discovered through slow tourism, which finds its most appropriate mode in river navigation, cycle tourism and guided tours of natural parks. Cremona’s territory will surprise visitors thanks to its diversified cultural offer, whose main strengths are represented by art, music, the violin making tradition, food-and-wine connoisseurship and the landscape-environmental dimension.

Crema www.comunecrema.it www.turismocrema.com

Crema is a town on a human scale, where tradition and history meet with each other in the old town centre, which looks like an elegant and charming living room, full of shops, boutiques and ateliers. The fabric of the town still keeps most of its medieval and Renaissance features. The origins of Crema are related to the Lombard invasion of the 6th century AD; its name probably comes from the Lombard term “Crem”, which means “hill”. The town tells a rich story through its ancient stones, religious architectures built with refined constancy over time, elegant private residences and public buildings of high artistic value. Everything keeps the memories of ages that saw the town playing a central role in important events, as a Byzantine castrum or a free city, from the Visconti influence to the long lasting Venetian domination. The town has a fascinating medieval structure and samples of great architecture (the “Lombard Gothic” Cathedral, the 16th century Palazzo Comunale with the coeval Torrazzo, the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria della Croce); and yet, its intrinsic beauty lives mainly in the details, flows on the façade and sides of the buildings outlining the narrow streets of

Via G. Mazzini PAG. 5

the town centre, and on the ancient paving, lives in the warm mixture of terracotta and gathers in the aristocratic courtyards and shadowy gardens.

Basilica di Santa Maria della Croce

The Crema cuisine has its origins in country traditions, with extensive use of barnyard animals such as pigs, geese and ducks, a wide offer of main courses and desserts that, together with typical cheeses made with short chain milk, represent the Crema culinary tradition. With a rural countryside around, the town allows visitors to discover naturalistic routes aimed at both bicycles and pedestrians. Crema has also a sporting side. Indeed, it will be the 2016 European Capital of Sport. With its wide range of sports structures and facilities, the town offers several options to meet the needs of all sports enthusiasts, from the most traditional to the niche ones.

Violin maker’s workshop

Violin making in Cremona The art of violin making was born in our town in the sixteenth century with Andrea Amati and continued with the Guarneri family, Antonio Stradivari, the greatest of all, in the eighteenth century and then, until now, with the luthiers who still cultivate it. Through the centuries, it has deeply characterized the town profile, becoming part of its identity. The violin is definitely a symbol universally related to the name of Cremona, with an associated image of artistic and cultural excellence. The violin making’s art is a tangible element that can be experienced along a route that, as the line of a staff, goes through the town and its music and luthiers excellences. The complexity and wonder of this art can be understood in the Violin Museum in Piazza Marconi. The room Lo scrigno dei tesori contains a really precious collection of old instruments and, by booking in advance, it is possible to listen to their sound. Another fundamental place to know this art is the Stanze per la musica in the Museo Civico Ala Ponzone, where it is possible to admire another prestigious collection donated by Carlo Alberto Carutti and consisting of rare stringed instruments PAG. 9

and plucked and rubbed string instruments. The route goes on with Stradivari’s Casa Nuziale in Corso Garibaldi 57 (advance booking required), where the Maestro’s first workshop was located. The traditional violin craftsmanship in Cremona - recently recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - is renewed by over 150 specialized luthier’s workshops, some of which can be visited by appointment.

The Polo Museale Città di Cremona Violin Museum (MdV) The Violin Museum allows to discover five centuries of Cremona violin making by directly meeting the great Masters - Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri – and their masterpieces, following a balanced trail of art and crafts, creativity and tradition, from the late Renaissance workshops until today.

Museo del Violino

Museo Civico Ala Ponzone Fine Arts Gallery The Fine Arts Gallery is located in the sixteenth century Palazzo Affaitati and displays mainly the art collection that Marchese Giuseppe Sigismondo Ala Ponzone donated to the town in 1842. Later, the collection was expanded with works from some Cremona suppressed churches and private donations; nowadays, among paintings and sculptures, the collection contains over two thousand pieces, the most important ones being the San Francesco in meditazione by Caravaggio and the Ortolano by Arcimboldo.

Fine Arts Gallery

Museo Civico Ala Ponzone Le Stanze per la musica Carlo Alberto Carutti’s collection represents one of the most important collections of stringed instruments in terms of quality, rarity and state of conservation of the instruments. The collection covers four centuries of violin making and consists of over sixty instruments, some of which belonging to famous collectors, musicians and aristocrats. Besides interesting specimens of violins, violas, viole d’amore, pochettes and hurdy-gurdys, the collection displays about fifty plucked and rubbed string instruments including guitars, Englishguitars, mandolins and lutes made by the major European craftsmen of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Museo Civico Archeologico In the deconsecrated medieval church of San Lorenzo, the archaeological museum displays the image of Cremona from the Roman foundation in 218 BC as the first colony to the north of the river Po up to the period of its maximum splendour in the Roman Imperial age, through the finds discovered in the town and the territory from the nineteenth century to the most recent excavations.

Museo Civico di Storia Naturale The original collection of the scientific section, like other sections of the Cremona Polo Museale, consisting of the Ala Ponzone legacy, is particularly interesting and of great value since Giuseppe Sigismondo (1761-1842) was not only a collector but also a naturalist and preparer of samples. Later, this first nucleus was extended with other collections mainly donated by local naturalists. Museo Civico di Storia Naturale

Museo Civico della Civiltà Contadina, “Il Cambonino Vecchio” The farmhouse “Il Cambonino”, at the gates of the town, hosts the ethnographic collection. The large farmyard leads to the different rooms, from the manor house to the bailiff’s house and the laundry. The complex includes also the Oratorio della Beata Vergine, which still hosts some traditional services in the Marian month. PAG. 11

A view from the Po river

Casalmaggiore

In ancient times, those who landed at Casalmaggiore used to arrive at a square directly overlooking the www.comune.casalmaggiore.cr.it Po: this embrace between the river and the land still exists, although, to protect the town, a main www.casalmaggioreturismo.it bank has been built, which is the most beautiful public walk in the town, just behind the old town centre, and delimits a large and charming flood bed area. However, landing at Casalmaggiore is not just a story of bygone days: just close to the old landing place, a modern berth has been built, which allows to make short cruises on the Po (booking at the Tourist Office). Once landed, the town welcomes the visitor with its large square - where all the main streets meet on - which is the open-air living room of the town in the hot Summer evenings. Casalmaggiore’s cultural offer to visitors has a long lasting tradition: from the excellent Teatro Comunale season since the late eighteenth century to the International Music Festival, a Summer chamber music festival with students from all over the world, to the museums. These include - sparkling with rigorously fool’s gold - the peculiar Museum of Bijou, an ornament whose manufacturing had its undisputed Parco Golena del Po PAG. 13

capital in Casalmaggiore in all the first half of the twentieth century. The museum displays thousands of objects from the old factories, which represented a significant moment in the economic and industrial Italian history. Near the Duomo di Santo Stefano, remarkable for its rich collection of paintings, and the monastic complex of Santa Chiara is the Museo Diotti, whose collections display the artistic production of the territory from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. The fired brick is the building material that characterizes the town: from the romantic small church of Santa Maria, just at the foot of the bank, the Torrione overlooking the river - the only remain of the ancient city walls - the neo-Gothic Palazzo Comunale - with its pointed arches and battlements the imposing neoclassical Duomo di Santo Stefano, to the several private and public palaces, such as the sixteenth century Palazzo Martinelli or the

Piazza Garibaldi, “Il Listone

eighteenth century Collegio Barnabitico di Santa Croce. Leaving the old town centre, it is possible to make a day trip, even by bike, and reach Fossacaprara, a hamlet by the river, whose ancient church contains medieval frescos, or - along the old country road to Sabbioneta - the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Fontana, where Parmigianino is buried. From there, Sabbioneta, a sixteenth century walled town commissioned by Vespasiano Gonzaga, can be reached with a short hike. No need for many words to describe the gastronomic tradition of the Casalmaggiore area: suffice it here to give the example of typical products that play a central role in it, from the “vanilla Cremona cotechino to the IGP Cremona salami, from the pumpkin tortelli served with tomato and mushrooms to the products of the land (especially melons, watermelons, tomatoes and pumpkins).

Walled Towns and Castles

...the province of Cremona has always been protected by castles and fortifications that are nowadays an interesting itinerary to discover the territory.

Walled Towns and Castles www.turismocremona.it

The flat territory of the Cremona province extends within the boundaries marked by the rivers Oglio, Adda and Po. Another river, the Serio, goes through the Western side; a surplus of water that has always represented the main source of wealth of the area. Crossroads of trades and area with a strong farming heritage, the Cremona territory has always been protected by castles and fortifications that today represent an interesting route to discover the territory. The route starts in Pandino with the imposing Castello Visconteo that displays all its splendour to the visitor. The fortified palace, commissioned by Bernabò Visconti, has a square plan and solid defensive towers, but its interior is characterized also by light and elegant colonnades, still widely decorated with fourteenth century paintings. Going on to the Sout-East is the town of Crema, connected to Soncino and Pizzighettone by a cycle path winding almost entirely on a protected route. The presence of walls (1488-1508) has always characterized the structure of Crema urban layout. Today there are still large sections of walls and the Torre Civica dating back to the thirteenth century included in the Palazzo Comunale.

Crema - Le Mura venete PAG. 17

The old town centre of Soncino is fully enclosed by an about 2 km girdle of walls, reinforced by towers and a moat, which joins the fifteenth century Rocca Sforzesca, one of the most representative military architectures in Lombardy, built to protect the river Oglio.

Soncino - Rocca sforzesca

The town of Pizzighettone is quite an interesting one. It is still enclosed by a system of fortifications that is considered one of the most intact in Northern Italy. The town overlooks the course of the Adda and its walls extend for more than 2 km. The visit of the fortifications allows to get in the pillboxes, a succession of large vaulted rooms, and walk down the whole perimeter, with the doors, the ravelin, the remains of the fortress and the jail. Particularly interesting is the Torre del Guado, a tower where Francis the 1st, King of France, was kept prisoner in 1525. Pizzighettone - Cinta muraria

In San Lorenzo Picenardi is the imposing complex of the Sommi Picenardi-Crotti castle, built by Luigi Voghera, while in Torre de’ Picenardi is the grand Villa Sommi Picenardi, whose building started in 1772 and was completed in successive stages during the nineteenth century, with interventions by Faustino Rodi and Luigi Voghera. Torre Picenardi - Villa Sommi Picenardi

Castelponzone - “Gli strettini”

San Giovanni in Croce - Villa Medici del Vascello

Going on towards Casalmaggiore, you can find Castelponzone a hamlet of the town of Scandolara Ravara - which is a very ancient fortified village already existing in the Roman age, though it became of crucial importance when the Duke of Milan gave it as a feud to Galeazzo Ponzone in 1416. Castelponzone was famous for its “ropemakers” and hemp manufacturing and has been recently recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. A few kilometres away is the village of San Giovanni in Croce, where is the imposing Villa Medici del Vascello, built in 1407 as the defensive fortress of Cabrino Fondulo, Prince of Cremona, and later converted into an elegant residence by Cecilia Gallerani, the famous Lady with an ermine painted by Leonardo da Vinci.

Not far away, in Casteldidone, Villa Mina della Scala, now Douglas Scotti, is a peculiar aristocratic building shaped as a many-towered castle, built at the end of the sixteenth century and extended later.

Casteldidone - Villa Mina della Scala

The route ends in Romprezzagno, a hamlet of Tornata, where the tiny builtup area encircles Cascina Bellotti, a building of Medieval origins, rebuilt in the shape of a castle in 1465 and later converted into a farm building. PAG. 19

Nature & Environment

The large route of nature is the river Po, with its slow flow rich in charm and history.

Nature

In the heart of the Po Valley, the province of Cremona is alchemy of water and land. The flow of the rivers Po, Oglio, Serio and Adda gives the countryside a unique charm, a calm beauty outlined by rows of poplars. A picturesque landscape where the needs www.turismocremona.it www.cicloturismo.podilombardia.it of farming combine with respect for the environment. The large route of nature is the river Po, with its slow flow rich in charm and history. It is thanks to the river – used as a trading route since the Roman age – that Cremona became a nerve centre of trading until the late Middle Ages. Although today river resources are not used so much for trading, the Great River and the Adda river have a very strong touristic appeal both at a national and international level. Navigation can be integrated by bicycle trips or guided tours of the towns or even fishing.

Cycle tourism

The Po near Cremona is a very fascinating reality for tourists. On board of the motor ship Barbie, tourists can enjoy an experience that allows them to discover the river with guided routes integrating river trips with cycle paths and visits of the several thematic museums related to the river. Accompanied by environment guides and territory tellers, it is possible to go into our culture and share its great values. Facebook: Tekno Katmarine srl
