August 24 2010 Meeting Forms Committee for Unity of Pushtoons and Mohajirs in Landhi A meeting of Pushtoons, Mohajirs and Punjabis was held in Landhi on August 24 2010 to discuss how to end the rising tension and killings in Landhi Majeed Colony/Muzaffarabad area. The meeting was held at Mumtaz School Landhi at the border of Mohajir/Pushtoon divide. Initially some of the organisers had a confusion, out of the severe tension in the area due to the rumor that two Mohajir people were killed overnight one of the organisers thought it best to 'cancel' the meeting. However there were 16 people at the meeting. The Mohajir composition included one school owner, real estate, artist/copywriter one teacher, one poet . The Pushtoon composition was 4 contractors, 2 school owners, 4 teachers. One Punjabi teacher also attended. The meeting started with comrade Tanveer defining the purpose of meeting to help build peace and to ensure that the effects of violence in the city do not create a gulf in Pushtoons and Mohajirs. He argued that people in Landhi do not want to fight an ethnic war. Comrade Ali Hassan spoke about the need of peace in Landhi to ensure that Pushtoons are not targetted in other parts. He said working class and shop owners want peace in Landhi. Comrade Zaki highlighted the fact that this is a good beginning and more such meetings are needed. A Mohajir school owner blamed MQM and ANP for the violence and urged people to unite and fightback against these forces. Another Mohajir real estate owner urged youth to come forward for peace and break this atmosphere of terror. A pushtoon nationalist Saeed argued that ANP has not called for revenge despite hundreds of Pushtoon being killed in August only, he said leaders of Pushtoons and Mohajirs can stem violence. Hanan, a Pushtoon worker said working class has no benefit to gain from those dividing people, he said he will do all to quell violence. Comrade Riaz spoke about the usefulness of Mohajir and Pushtoon unity and thanked the organizers for taking a bold step that will help challenge the killing spree of Pushtoons in Karachi. He said it is Pushtoons who are targeted in the city areas creating tensions in Mohajir minority areas and it is through unity we can fight violence. A pushtoon school owner said ethnicity will burn the entire Karachi and a move from Landhi where mixed population lives can become an example for the whole city. A Mohajir teacher said that political parties have now become a force to pitch brother against brother. A Pushtoon contractor said a peace committee is necessary. In the end a five member committee including Mohajirs Pathan and Punjabis was formed including Tanveer, Ali Hassan, Sherazi, Gul Baba and Naveed which will contact other peace lovers and call more meetings.
