Press Release Stop Target Killings in Our Name! Citizens Express Grave Concern at Target Killings A meeting was held at HRCP Karachi office to discuss the recent spate of target killings in Karachi. Various social and political activists, left intellectuals, poets, journalists, trade union activists took part in the deliberations. The participants condemned target killings in Karachi and termed these as an attempt to divide various linguistic groups through a bloodshed. On the one hand the government appears helpless in stopping those involved in target killings while on the other unseen forces and local and non-local land mafia and extortion mafias have joined hands to destabilize the democratic system. The participants agreed that target killings are not the means to sovle political disputes nor can land-grabbing be stopped by target killings. Civilized citizens have a duty to come forward and stop those who are trying to divide people through conspiratorial means. It is our duty to let the killers know that we will not accept killings in our name. The participants formed a committee that will prepare material and reports to mobilize public opinion agaisnt target killings. Those who attended the meeting included Saleha Athar of Woman Rights Network, Asad Butt of Human Rights Commission, Usman Baloch of Workers Party, Abdul Ali of Pushtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, Hassan Abbass of Labour Education and Research, Allauddin Bangash an intellectual, Rahat Saeed of Progressive Writers Association, Ayub Qureshi of Pakistan Trade Union Federation, Dr Samreen Hashmi of Pakistan Medical Association, Dr Riaz Ahmed of Karachi University, Nangyal Yousfzai of Jars Adbi Jirga, Sartaj Khan of International Socialists, Zia Khan a journalist, Saleem Akhtar of Communist Party, Abdul Hannan a labour activist.
